Are Luxury Safaris in Africa Safe During the Coronavirus Pandemic?

When the global coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, many people were forced to abruptly cancel their travel plans, hoping it would only be for a short time. As the duration of lockdowns and quarantines stretched on, the travel industry took a hard hit. Once the restrictions finally began to lift, socially distant outdoor activities were deemed safer than other options, prompting stir-crazy people to look for ways they could enjoy themselves outdoors.
During the lockdowns, tourism to Africa suffered along with travel to other locations all over the world, but interest in exotic destinations like Africa grew as potential travelers wondered if it would be safe to finally go on their dream safari to the Serengeti Plain or another wildlife-filled African destination. A luxury African safari gives adventurers an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the most majestic creatures in the world on their home turf. It’s a thrilling, one-of-a-kind experience, and you would mostly be outdoors — but does that actually mean it’s safe during a pandemic? Here’s what you need to know about the impact the pandemic has had on the safari industry and whether it’s safe to finally take that trip.
How Has the Global Pandemic Impacted the Safari Industry?
When the pandemic hit the world hard — and caught everyone off guard — in early March 2020, many safari companies had to abruptly halt operations . As countries around the world remained on lockdown through the rest of the spring and into early summer, the safari business virtually came to a complete stop. Despite the challenges, the owners of safari companies didn’t give up hope.

While some companies did offer refunds, many guests chose to postpone and reschedule their safari trips for later in 2020 or farther out into 2021 or 2022. Although these delayed safaris are certainly better than outright cancellations for safari companies, those bookings are taking up future slots that could have gone to completely new bookings. Additionally, some people who would have traveled in the coming months are still too intimidated to book trips. As a result of these issues, the industry is still in a tight spot.
How Are Different Countries Responding to the Pandemic?
If you do decide to travel abroad during the pandemic, be aware that not all countries are open to visitors from foreign nations. Some countries, such as Botswana and Seychelles, have imposed restrictions at different points that prevent non-residents or those from a particular nation from entering the country. It’s important to thoroughly research travel advisories and restrictions for your destination before making any plans. Quarantine policies, which often require anyone entering the country to self-quarantine for 14 days, may also be in effect in some countries.

These policies can — and probably will — change over time and could even change suddenly. Even if you get the all clear when booking, be sure to check for policy and procedure updates all the way up until your departure. Once you arrive, make sure you have a plan in place to keep up with the news for updates that could occur while you’re traveling — both those related to Africa and those related to your home country. (You also need to go back home!)
If you can’t find updated information about your destination for some reason, talk to your travel agent or booking agency. They should be able to provide up-to-date information on travel restrictions, the number of current COVID-19 cases in the destination country, and information related to rescheduling your travel plans, if necessary.
Keep in mind that it’s possible countries with bans on travel may be experiencing high numbers of COVID-19 cases. However, most bans are initiated to keep the virus from spreading due to travelers bringing it into the country. If you’re from the United States or another country that has been hit particularly hard with virus cases, you may not be allowed to enter some countries, even if their borders aren’t completely closed. For the current status of travel to African countries, visit the African Travel Inc. website .
Is It Safe to Travel at All?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends asking yourself a few questions before you travel. Are you willing (and able) to stay 6 feet away from anyone you may come in contact with on your trip? When you return home from your trip, are you willing to self-quarantine for 14 days to ensure you don’t inadvertently pass the virus to anyone else in your home or community? If you can’t answer all these questions with a confident yes, then you are advised not to go.

If you or any of your travel companions are older than 65 years old, obese or have a chronic lung condition, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes or any other condition that compromises your immune system, you are advised to stay home. Take into consideration how many other people are likely to be with you on the safari and the conditions when making a decision.
If you do travel, don’t forget to continue following best practices for preventing the spread of the coronavirus. Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer if you can’t get to soap and water and avoid touching your face. Keep your face covered with a mask when you’re out in public and cover your mouth if you sneeze or cough when you’re not wearing a mask indoors. Definitely avoid crowded indoor spaces with poor ventilation, as those types of spaces have been linked with the spread of the coronavirus .
How Has the Pandemic Affected Prices?
The good news starts with cheap flights that are likely to stay that way for the foreseeable future, although finding flights to locations that aren’t in demand can be a challenge. Additionally, the steep loss of tourism money across the African continent — almost $55 billion in three months, according to some estimates — means that many vacation opportunities may cost much less than normal, including safaris. In addition to discounts, you’re likely to see a freeze on 2020’s prices as well as more flexibility when you book.

I’ve always heard good things about Trailfinders and not much about Virgin Holidays so I wondered what experiences others have had.
To give you an idea of what we are looking at, we’re planning to spend 3 nights in Cape Town followed by a 3 night Safari in Kruger National Park and want to book all flights /internal flights /transfers and accommodation all through one company to keep things simpler for us when we get there. We’d be flying from Edinburgh through either Heathrow or Gatwick depending which company we go for. Trailfinders have quoted as using BA meaning we’d need to go Heathrow to Johannesburg then Cape Town, Virgin have quoted from Gatwick straight to Cape Town.
Any advice/tips/stories much appreciated.

What's your budget for this holiday? The only thing with using travel agents is that they have relationships with only a select few lodges (often the more expensive ones). The price ranges from ~£150 pppn all the way up to +£3000 and anywhere in between. Which lodges have they recommended for you? Here is a map of all the lodges bordering Kruger (minus 1 or 2) http://assets.sunsafaris.com/Map-of-Kruger-Camps.pdf
Is there a reason for only sticking to UK based airlines , often the better prices can be found flying through Middle East or Europe.
Which accommodation options have they suggested for Cape Town ?
Have you thought of booking the holiday yourself? South Africa is really geared up towards the self sufficient traveller. If not I would personally go through Trail finders.

That's a very easy S Africa itinerary. I would contact an agent who posts on this forum to plan a perfect, personal itinerary for you. You will get a "packaged" trip from those companies. Using an agent for a personal trip will be designed for you and your needs/wants. You will also have wider choices of hotels and safari lodges in every price range.

I would use Trailfinders over Virgin, but I never use them for accommodation.
Honestly it's not too difficult to do yourself, especially the Cape Town bit.
I have used a local agent for a Kruger trip in March next year. There are a few that post on here. I went with Jacqui from Lodge Trackers and was very satisfied with the help I got. Plus it was the same price as booking myself. I used an agent as it was a first for me to the Kruger area and I didn't really know where to start.
Lastly can you spare some more time, it's a long way for 6 nights!
Trailfinders do not do defined packages so you choose your route and accommodation but they only offer a limited choice of accommodations. A good compromise suggested by lisasplaces. The locals on here certainly know some less publicised spots where you get comparable or better accommodation without the extra cost added by the brand premium.
As for lisaplace's last comment, very valid. Even a few more days. Careful though, many of us are so addicted we go for weeks at a time - you have been warned!
My daughter has used Virgin a lot and although their service has been excellent, they are not very flexible and you more or less have to stick to their 'package' .
Your trip is very straightforward, popular one. I would do your own research, choose the flights most convenient for you, the lodges, Cape Town accommodation ( lots of fabulous guesthouses) etc. Contact Dial a Flight UK for a quote and get them to make the bookings. I have dealt with Spike this year , he is very helpful. Their SA agent will book almost any accommodation even the small guest houses, any accommodation they cannot book, then just email the place and make your own booking.
That way you have a tailor made holiday of your choice not of someone else.
You don't mention what time of the year you are going, but if it is SA summer I would say you are short changing yourselves with just 3 nights ( 2 days?) in Cape Town. You could cover the city in that time but miss out on the fabulous surroundings all within 1 1 /2 hours drive.
Is your whole trip just the 6 days?
Can't maenge weeks at a time, yet! Need to work, lol. But managing 3 visits in 2016 and Feb 2017 booked 😊. Yes it's addictive!
Sorry guys, I hadn't received notifications for the replies. Thanks all for replying to me.
We were looking at May, the start of May as our first wedding anniversary is 7th May and we would like to be away for that.
I did wonder if 6 days was cutting it too short, but with my husband's work we'd be struggling to be away for longer.
It's Motswari Lodge I want to stay at for the safari part and both companies can do this so that part is all ok.
Exciting planning, but I do get a bit carried away!!

We like Trailfinders …
Firstly the phone was answered promptly & politely by Tabitha. Secondly she was able to deal with our enquiry/booking professionally & with the minimum fuss. Totally understood & satisfied our requests. Was most patient. We like dealing with Trailfinders. Haven’t done so for a while due to personal circumstances. Glad to be back. Tabitha reinforced our faith in dealing with travel agents. By the way Kelly was most helpful too on our initial enquiry.

Great support and advice
We decided to go on a 'once in a lifetime' trip to Australia and New Zealand. Apart from knowing that was the destination, we didn't have a plan. Looking at various website, we saw a suggested tour and went to talk to the TrailFinders staff. It was the local knowledge of the countries that inspired us to take the planning further and worked with Tom in the Chester office. he spent a great deal (and I mean great deal) of time putting together an itinerary that included trips, hotels and flights. Tom has supported us during the planning stage and has always been available whenever there were questions or concerns. Know looking forward to going.....

helpful knowledgeable staff
The consultants I spoke to were very polite, helpful and knowledgeable. Nothing was too much trouble. The system allowed them to immediately have my details to hand when I rang with a query. I could not have asked for better service, and certainly could not have come up with such a wonderful itinerary without their help. Many thanks
Dear Helen Thank you for your kind review. All the best Trailfinders
Excellent holiday planning and customer care
Booked our honeymoon with Trailfinders after shopping around a few travel agent-type places and will definitely be using them again. Shout out to Michelle in the Edinburgh branch who was very patient and helpful with all of our queries and put together an excellent trip to Hawaii for us. Would definitely recommend if you haven't used before!

From start to finish, every single person I interacted with could not have been more professional and helpful. But more then that, the genuine warmth and humor radiated through, especially with James and Christine. Flawless experience, incredible people. Cannot wait for the next trip.

Providing the best…
Every effort was made to give us best possible options for flights, times and costs. This was also true of the duration of the holiday, the options on hotels and helping us arrive at a satisfactory package. Trailfinders has become the first choice for us when we are looking for a luxury holiday.
Tried and Tested.
I wanted Trailfinders to arrange flights, a hotel stopover and car hire. They have done this for us previously and everything was straightforward and worked well. The operators are friendly and patient, often pointing out better deals or ways to improve our plans. This is such a good service and takes the worry and confusion out of doing bookings ourselves.

Booking a holiday made simple.
Right from the very first phone call Andy was able to put together our holiday requirements immediately and offer a quote. He was knowledgeable and offered suggestions that we hadn’t thought of. Everything was very easy and at no point did we feel under any pressure to book. This is at least the second time we have used Trial Finders and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

The holiday of a lifetime, thank you Jade!
Thanks to Jade, we have just returned from the holiday of a lifetime. From the booking process to the actual holiday, we could not of wished for anything better! She spoke to us at the beginning to see what type of holiday we were looking for, she was full of great ideas and listened to exactly what we wanted. It was perfect having all the transfers arranged with the holiday and the app was great to have access to whilst away. Huge thank you to Jade for making this holiday possible!

Experienced Advisor, good booking experience
Very responsive, good advice - hopefully, I will know for sure when I take the trip. Good to have people to talk to who have actually been to the destination or hotel they are recommending. Nabil was really friendly, easy to talk with and she had good input. Really enjoyed the booking experience.
Dear Customer Thank you very much for taking the time to let us know just how helpful your travel consultant has been in assisting you with your trip. If you’ve never been to a destination, no matter how much research you do, it certainly doesn't compare to talking to someone who’s been, and I'm pleased your consultant was able to put their own training and personal experience to good use. We will be sure to pass on your kind compliments to both your consultant and their manager. Kind regards Trailfinders
Our trip to Thailand
Our trip to Thailand, staying in the Ibis waterside in Bangkok and then on to the Centara Grand hotel in Hua Hin was a great success thanks to staff member Paul Hill who organised our trip. The Centara Grand Hotel including the spa was an amazing resort with good facilities for relaxation and leisure. The architecture of the hotel was stunning and made for a special experience together with the friendly staff. Hua Hin was a good central resort with plenty of restaurants and shops and beach.

Great service and attention to detail
Second time booking a long distance tour through Trailfinders and find their attention to detail and general attitude and helpfulness to be first class.Had to reconsider / arrange different accommodation details and these were accommodated without a "hard sell"of any kind. Very happy in my dealings with Gerry in the Glasgow office. More than happy to recommend.
Lovely staff
Very personable young man, very patient with my changes and efficient in communicating the status of the planning to colleagues when he couldn't speak directly to me. Some frustration that Trailfinders couldn't do exactly what I wanted without exorbitant cost increases. Brochure prices are misleading. This review refers to pre trip planning only btw!
Dear G Brandreth Thank you for the kind review and feedback. Kind regards Trailfinders
This has been my third experience with…
This has been my third experience with Trailfinders and from start to finish i could not fault their service. On this occasion i had the pleasure of dealing with Sarah McCartney and Gerry, both of whom couldnt help anymore. I'll most definitely be back in the future.
Dear Tracey Thank you for your kind review. All the best Trailfinders
