Townsville Cycle Club
Tiny mountain brewery tour of the north.

The Tour of the North was first run in 2016 as the Great Northern Tour to fill the hole left in the North Queensland road racing calendar by the the Gold Fever le Tour, which was last run in 2014.
From humble beginnings starting off as a two-stage event between Townsville and Charters Towers, the 2022 edition will hold four stages across four, unique to Townsville, locations. To reflect a new age in Townsville cycling, in 2021 the tour adopted the new name as the Tour of the North and we welcome aboard Tiny Mountain Brewery as principal sponsor.
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DATES AND MORE INFO ON OUR 2023 EDITION
Our 2022 Grades were as follows:

The Sprint champion will be decided over stages 1 and 2, with points up for grabs in intermediate sprints and at the finish line.

The General Classification will be a heated contest, with the Prologue set to establish the initial time gaps before the start of the Stage 1 road race.
Time bonuses are on offer for the first five place getters on stages 1, 2 and 3. Time bonuses are also awarded at intermediate sprint and KOM locations.

The KOM champion will be decided over stages 1 and 3, with points up for grabs at KOM locations, for the fastest first and second half splits on the Castle Hill ITT as well as the stage place getters.

The last time the Tour began in the north of France was in 2001.

Plans for a six-day Battle of the North women's stage race announced
Ladies Tour of Norway organisers have applied to host the race across Denmark, Norway and Sweden in August 2022
- Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

The organiser of the Ladies Tour of Norway has announced firm plans for a six day stage race called the Battle of the North to happen in 2022.
It has applied to the UCI to have the Scandinavian stage race between August 16 and 21, with stages in Denmark before the race heads north for three days in Norway and a fourth crossing into Sweden.
As the race will replace the Ladies Tour of Norway it is expected the new event will also be part of the top tier, the Women’s WorldTour, consequently attracting the biggest teams and best riders.
The race was originally announced in 2019, the organiser hoping to amalgamate the two Swedish one-day events at Vårgårda and the Norwegian race into a 10-day event. This has not proved possible, with Vårgårda, which runs two WorldTour races - a team time trial and road race - on the same weekend, choosing to remain independent.
“There are no bad feelings on our part, Vårgårda is a unique concept with strong local roots,” said Ladies Tour of Norway organiser Roy Moberg in a press release.
“A the same time it places some restrictions in us in relation to realising the Battle of the North as we had originally planned. There is simply no place in the UCI’s calendar for a 10-day stage race with the continuation of Vårgårda in the same time period in August.
However, though the Ladies Tour of Norway organiser is formally behind the application to the UCI, they are supported by both the Danish and Swedish cycling federations.
Performances from riders such as 2016 world champion Amalie Dideriksen (Trek-Segafredo), Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope) and more recently Emma Norsgaard (Movistar) have highlighted the quality of the women’s sport in Denmark, and the race will be good news for the sport there.
Though stages move around the south of the country, crossing the Oslo Fjord, the Ladies Tour of Norway is based in the town of Halden, south of Oslo and right on the border with Sweden. Traditionally the final stage heads into Sweden and the press release suggests this will continue in the Battle of the North.
“We will have six varied and spectacular stages that offer tough cross country riding in Jutland [Denmark], climbing in the Norwegian mountains and fast-paced technical roads in Eastern Norway, spiced with a Swedish Norwegian ending,” read the release.
The race will make for a busy summer of top-level stage racing for the women’s peloton, with the addition of a women’s equivalent of the Tour de France expected over eight days in July. Cycling Weekly understands the 10-day Giro Rosa is hoping to return to the WorldTour in 2022 after being relegated for this year.
Add a six-day Women’s Tour in the UK, and two Spanish four-day races in May which are set to return in 2022 after one was cancelled this year due to the pandemic, and the timing of the Scandinavian race was complicated.
“It is no secret that we have tried to find a spot in the UCI’s WorldTour calendar in May/June… We have so far not succeeded with that, but if we get an opening from the UCI it is still desirable,” said technical implementation project manager, Anders Eia Linnestad.
The Norwegian race has been running since 2014 and has been won by some of the sport’s biggest names, including Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx), Lucinda Brand (Trek-Segafredo) and Megan Guarnier.
Winner of Sunday’s Ghent-Wevelgem, Marianne Vos has dominated, the Dutch rider winning eight stages and GC in the three most recent editions, the gnarly Classics style courses suiting her perfectly.

LILLE, France (AP) — The 2025 Tour de France will start from the northern French city of Lille, race organizer ASO said Tuesday.
ASO gave no further information but said details on the early stages of the 2025 edition will be provided on Nov. 30.
The opening of the 112th edition of the showcase race returns to France after three straight years of starting abroad. It began in Denmark in 2022 and from Bilbao in Spain earlier this year.
Next year’s race begins from the Italian city of Florence, and takes riders to Rimini through a series of hills and climbs in the regions of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.
It will be the third time that the race starts in Lille, following on from 1960 and 1994.

Rory McIlroy debuts new TaylorMade driver ahead of DP World Tour Championship in Dubai
Posted: November 14, 2023 | Last updated: November 14, 2023
Rory McIlroy has already won the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai, so he is using this week’s DP World Tour Championship to test a new driver.
The new big stick, the Taylormade Qi-10, surfaced on the USGA’s conforming list of clubs this past week, meaning McIlroy can test it out in the United Arab Emirates.
“It’s just a new driver that I have been playing around with,” McIlroy said in a video released by the DP World Tour.
“So seeing that this week is, you know, I still gotta go out there and try to win the golf tournament, but it could be a good time to test it in competition. You will probably see a new driver in the bag this week.”
This year marks McIlroy’s fifth time winning the Race to Dubai, the DP World Tour’s equivalent to the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup.
“I played well when I came back over to the European Tour this year,” McIlroy said Tuesday.
“I won two Rolex Series Events and had some other really high finishes in tournaments that give a lot of points, and yeah, look, it’s really nice to have my name on the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fifth time and just be one behind Seve [Ballesteros] and still a few behind [Colin Montgomerie].”
The Harry Vardon Trophy has been awarded to the winner of the Race to Dubai since 2009. Prior to that, the DP World Tour —then known as the European Tour—utilized the ‘Order of Merit,’ which was essentially the player of the year. Whoever won the Order of Merit earned the most Euros—or British Pounds before 1998—throughout the season.
Montgomerie won the Order of Merit a record eight times, while Ballesteros took the trophy home six times, most recently in 1991.
“You’re talking about the greats of the European game, and to be up alongside them is really [amazing],” McIlroy added. “If someone had told 18-year-old Rory when I was making my professional debut in 2007 that I would have won five Order of Merits up to this point, I wouldn’t have believed them.”
McIlroy has had quite the 2023 season, despite not winning a major and finishing solo second at the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.
But he won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January and then the Genesis Scottish Open in July, which awarded him ample points to take home the Harry Vardon Trophy yet again.
And because of his superb play this year, he can experiment with a new driver in competition, which should help jump-start his game for 2024.

Tour of the North
The Tour of the North International stage race takes to the roads of Northern Ireland during the Easter weekend. The NICF promotions group headed by Ballymena woman Joan McCullough(race director) has organised a challenging route comprising of three road races and one time trial.
The stages all start and finish in Ballymena and take in the roads of counties Antrim and Derry/Londonderry. One hundred and ten riders will race almost 200 miles in the three days. Stage One on Easter Saturday 4th April is a 65 mile loop in the Glens of Antrim with four King of the Hills primes. This will be a hard start to the weekend and the peleton will no doubt split into several groups. Easter Sunday begins with a 4 mile individual time trial in the morning which should see a further sort out of the general classification. In the afternoon Stage 3 is a 63 miles road race based on an eleven mile circuit between Ballymena and Randalstown. The final stage on Easter Monday is the longest of the weekend at 70 miles (113 kms) and it takes the riders on a loop around Co Derry/Londonderry including 2 major climbs at Springwell and Cam Forest. Detailed information of the route and passing times can be found on tourofthenorth.net website.
This is the 51st edition of the Tour of the North. Former winners include the former world number 1 Sean Kelly (1976) and more recently the 2013 World Scratch Track race champion Martyn Irvine from Newtownards who won the 2009 race.
The race does not have a head line sponsor this year but it has secured backing from cycle clothing company Powerhouse sport and Ballymena Borough Council.
The start list includes teams’ from the United Kingdom, Ireland France and Holland.

Included in the photograph are competitors who will be on the start line of the tour at Easter, David Hamilton (North Down CC) winner last month of the John Moore Memorial race, junior rider and U23 James Curry (Banbridge CC) one of Irelands best junior cyclists who has attended the UCI School of Cycling in Switzerland, Paul Mulligan (Caldwell Cycles) Omagh) the current Ulster Veteran road race champion who has competed many times in the Tour of the North and local man Hall Booth (Ballymena RC) who has raced successfully for over 20 years and also holds a position on the organising NICF committee.
The field is a good mix of local riders and visiting teams so it promises to be an exciting contest for the coveted yellow jersey for race winner.
The race also includes an Under 23 year old competition in which the leader wears a white jersey and the King of the Hills spotted jersey.

Testimonials
What people are saying.
“ This was a fun bicycle tour in northern Wisconsin! Great staff, great meals, great sags, great lodging, fun adventures at the Lodge layover, and great route! “
Connie from Michigan 2022
“ We had a wonderful time on the Escape to the North Tour. We enjoyed the beauty of the area, the challenge of the hills, the fun people, and the great food. Mary Jo put together a fabulous route and fun after-ride activities. The team was friendly, very supportive and attended to our every need. I highly recommend this trip. “ Chuck and Mary from Minnesota – 2021
“ I want to congratulate you on one of the best run bike trips I have been on. This trip had everything. On the road there were great routes with plenty of information on how to navigate them, beautiful scenery and quiet roads, conscientious and visible SAG support, and healthy snacks available at rest stops. The places we stayed were beautiful and the food was very good throughout the entire trip. You even had activities planned for us when there was time, like the Lumberjack show in Hayward and the pontoon ride. Wow! I have to admit I could get used to no tent set up and take down and the Ride with GPS! Everyone on the staff was wonderful. They really cared about our welfare and enjoyment of the trip. They were so nice to me, asking me to join them at a table when I couldn’t figure out where to sit as a solo traveler. I really appreciated that. The yoga was wonderful. “ Mariette, St Paul, Mn, 2021

Jon Batiste announces first North American headlining tour, celebrating ‘World Music Radio’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jon Batiste, the Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician and former bandleader for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will embark on his first North American headlining tour in support of his latest album. The expansive “World Music Radio,” featuring his signature rich blend of R&B, hip-hop, swing, jazz and pop, was released earlier this summer.
The tour news arrived Monday, on the heels of the 2024 Grammy nominations announcement: Batiste is up for six Grammys, including album, song, and record of the year.
The “Uneasy Tour: Purifying the Airwaves for the People” will kick off Feb. 16 in Portland, Oregon, and take Batiste across the U.S. and Canada. The tour wraps in Miramar Beach, Florida, on April 27.
Along the way, he’ll hit numerous cities including Seattle, San Francisco, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York and Atlanta.
“I’m into numbers, so: 20 theaters and 24 performances to bless the pivotal year 2024. For my first solo run I wanted to play in smaller venues and curate experiences that let me really feel the people while I play. Think of these 24 shows less as a tour and more as a series of 24 not to be missed experiences, each being one-of-a-kind,” Batiste told The Associated Press in an exclusive statement. “We are designing these performances to be catalysts to bring people together, raise awareness for things I care about and inspire change in this country, and the world.”
The goal, he says, is to experience his performances in “intimate, life-affirming presentations created to unite, uplift and inspire us all in this time of change and uncertainty,” he explained.
Presales begin Nov. 14 and tickets for the general public go on sale Nov. 17.
For those who can’t wait until next year for their Batiste: The multi-instrumentalist is the subject of a new documentary titled “American Symphony,” which follows his journey to compose a symphony while his wife, writer Suleika Jaouad, undergoes cancer treatment. It will hit theaters on Nov. 24 and Netflix on Nov. 29.

Level of support - van supported.
Adventure Cycling's van-supported tours — where all personal and group gear is transported by a vehicle each day — have 2 leaders and up to 13 riders who camp most nights and share rotating cooking duties, akin to a self-contained trip but with the security and simplicity of van support. Learn More
Physical Difficulty - Level 4
A tour for someone looking to push themselves on their adventure. Average mileage between 45 and 60 miles per day, with a variety of terrain. Longer mileage days will typically have more rolling terrain, while shorter mileage days will have hilly or mountainous terrain. Average daily elevation gain between 2500 and 4500 feet per day, with some days possibly exceeding 4500 feet in elevation gain. (Formerly Intermediate+/Advanced Tours)
Average Mileage: 45-65/day Average Elevation Gain Range: 2500-4500 ft/day, no high limit
The Natchez Trace Parkway is one of the North American continent’s crown-jewel byways. We’re going to pedal every inch of this nearly continuous greenway linking the southern Appalachian foothills and the bluffs of the lower Mississippi River.
As we spin along the ribbon of road — the accompanying van hauling most of our gear — we’ll traverse forested ridges, coast along broad valleys, and slip through isolated hollows. We’ll ride in the tracks of pioneer mail couriers, bison, prehistoric peoples, Ohio River Valley boatmen, soldiers, and outlaws on the run. We’ll even pass through several Civil War sites, including the town that Grant said was “too beautiful to burn.”
No commercial traffic, no chasing hounds, no distracting billboards — just you, your bicycle, and some of the prettiest countryside in the South.

" I want to thank you (and all the Adventury Cycling staff) for the awesome work you do and let you know how instrumental bicycle travel has been in making my life better, and ACA really has been the reason for it."
Day 1. Nashville, Tennessee, 0 miles
We'll meet up with our group in Nashville, get to know each other, and spend some time finalizing our gear as we get ready for our adventure on the Natchez Trace. Getting to Nashville early is a great way to explore the capital of Tennessee, world renowned for famous country music artists and venues. Before we go to bed for the night, we'll load up the van and trailer with our bikes and bags, ready for our shuttle in the morning.
Day 2. Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi, via shuttle
We'll initiate our 448-mile journey by meeting up in the morning in Nashville, where we'll set out on a nine-hour shuttle ride to the trailhead in Natchez. Once we arrive, we'll be free to visit the abundant sites of Natchez, established by French colonists in 1716 and capital of the Mississippi Territory until 1822. Natchez was the ultimate destination for thousands of boatmen who navigated the Mississippi River in their heavily laden flatboats and keelboats. After selling their goods and boats at market, many would return home to the Ohio River Valley by way of the Natchez Trace.
Day 3. Natchez to Rocky Springs, 61 miles
If you didn't know it already, you'll quickly realize you've entered the Deep South as we begin cycling beneath a canopy of moss-draped trees lining the road. Our first day on the Trace will be an easy one, providing additional time to visit the sites of Natchez and of the Natchez Trace itself. Highlights of the latter include the sunken trace, a deeply eroded stretch of the original trail, and Emerald Mound National Historic Landmark, one of the largest Native American mounds in North America. Encompassing eight acres, Emerald Mound was built between AD 1250 and 1600 by ancestors of the Natchez tribe, who apparently used it for ceremonial purposes. Later in the day, we'll make the side trip to Port Gibson, the town General Ulysses S. Grant said was "too beautiful to burn." We'll camp nearby at the Rocky Springs Campground.
Day 4. Rocky Springs to Ridgeland, 48 miles
The scenery continues to alternate between hardwood forest, supporting plants and trees common in the subtropics, and open pastures and cotton fields as we make our way toward, but not into, the Mississippi capital of Jackson. The Civil War left its mark on this section of the Trace, as several skirmishes occurred in the area, including the Battle of Raymond, a clash that was part of General Grant's Vicksburg campaign. We'll also take time to explore the Clinton Visitor Center, built with period materials and architectural details, lending it the look and feel of the farmhouses that once lined the Trace. Sit a spell in a rocking chair on the porch and relax. We will end the day at a Ridgeland hotel.
Day 5. Ridgeland to French Camp, 82 miles
This is one of the flattest parts of the Parkway, yet the day is long and the terrain varied enough to persuade you to shift gears often enough, especially in and around the hills near our campground for the eve. Opportunities to take a break during the mega-mileage day come at the Cypress Swamp, where a boardwalk trail leads over water through a tupelo/bald cypress swamp (watch for alligators!), the French Camp Historic District log-cabin village, and the town of Kosciusko, where billionaire celebrity and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey was born.
Day 6. French Camp to Shannon, 70 miles
As we head north from the campground, the Trace rolls up and down through the Red Clay Hills before settling into bottomlands near the headwaters of the Big Black River. Another pivotal battle of the Vicksburg campaign was contested near this river when Union forces under Grant defeated Confederate troops led by General John C. Pemberton. The miles just seem to zip by along this central section of the Trace with only a handful of minor hills and few changes in the uniform surroundings. The vast hardwood and pine forests that prevailed in the old days are gone, but miles and miles of mature second-growth stands line the Parkway today.
Day 7. Shannon to Tishomingo, 54 miles
Early in the day, we'll skirt Tupelo, the birthplace of Elvis Presley. Who knew how close we came to never enjoying the King of Rock 'n' Roll: when Elvis was just one year old, he and his family survived a tornado that killed more than 200 of their fellow Tupelonians. Tupelo is also home to the Natchez Trace Headquarters, located adjacent to the Parkway at milepost 266. There you'll find an information center with exhibits and a hiking trail that goes to the Old Town Overlook and Chickasaw Village Site. The rest of the day takes us through a tangle of terrain that varies from wetlands to the Tombigbee Prairie to the Appalachian foothills. The differences may be less dramatic than what you could encounter in Maine or Montana, but the observant will no doubt discern the subtle changes in flora and geography.
Day 8. Tishomingo to Hohenwald, 79 miles
On this, our penultimate day of pedaling, we'll awaken in Tishomingo State Park, named after a Chickasaw chief. The park is home to some of Mississippi's most rugged and picturesque topography, from massive boulders to shady crevices embellished with an embarrassment of ferns. Situated in the foothills of the Appalachians, the park contains the only Devonian and Mississippian epoch formations found in the state of Mississippi. The park's 1,530 acres also contain trails and other features built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Onward and upward from the park, the scenery remains top-notch, from wooded ridges to deep, steep hollows carved by brooks cascading over rocky streambeds. The traffic should be light, and you'll find plenty of opportunities to stop and hike a nature trail or cool off in a clear creek.
Day 9. Hohenwald to Nashville, Tennessee, 62 miles
Dishing up a brace of stunning waterfalls, a trio of outstanding overlooks, and mile after mile of deciduous forest, the northernmost section of the Trace is as hilly as it is gorgeous. Past the grave of Meriwether Lewis, who died of gunshot wounds in October 1809 in the nearby Grinder House Inn, we'll enjoy a fun descent before confronting a challenging grade that gains 300 feet in a mile. The payoff: the splendid Swan Valley Overlook, followed by a screaming downhill to the northeastern terminus of the Trace. Afterward, we'll celebrate with a meal of traditional Southern cuisine at the famous Loveless Café. We'll then shuttle a few miles back into Nashville and bid farewell to one another, no doubt with an evident "trace" of sadness in our eyes.
Accommodations - Camping/Indoor
Most of the overnights will be at private or public campgrounds with a range of amenities. Depending on the nature and location of the trip, these facilities could range from RV parks with hot tubs, to wilderness locations without running water. Indoor facilities such as motels/hotels, hostels, and churches are used occasionally, but on our more remote trips, some primitive camping is possible. Epic tours generally see about one indoor overnight every ten days. Overnight facilities vary, but tents are typically pitched on large, flat, grassy areas. You will need a good freestanding tent with a ground cloth, a sleeping bag rated appropriately for the season and elevation of your tour, and a sleeping pad.
Meals - Shared cooking
Your group will share responsibilities for food purchase, preparation, and clean up on a rotating basis. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be accommodated, though food selection may be limited in some locations.
Terrain - Hilly
Our Hilly tours have a consistent up and down nature to them. A typical day will have you climbing (and descending) between 1,500 and 2,500 feet. Grades on these tours can vary, but will typically be between 2% and 6%. (38-63 vertical feet/mile).

Taylor Swift Takes Her Eras Tour Global, Shaking Argentina

On May 31, Florencia Romeo slept in a tent outside Argentina’s largest stadium with her girlfriend and her sister. They had heard rumors that Taylor Swift might be coming to Buenos Aires, and they wanted to be first in line.
The rumors were right: Ms. Swift was coming, but it would take a while. Her concert was more than five months away.
The tent stayed anyway, occupied by a rotating cast of 30 die-hard Swifties who worked together over 163 days to hold their spots in line for a chance to get as close as possible to their idol when she walked onstage Thursday in the first stop of her Eras Tour outside North America.
“We have been waiting for this for many years,” said Ms. Romeo, 23, who quit her job as a cashier partly to dedicate herself to waiting in line. “We didn’t expect her to come, and then she did. So it was obvious that we had to do what we had to do.”

Ms. Swift’s Eras Tour officially went global on Thursday when the pop megastar began a new phase of shows that would take her to 25 cities across South America, Asia, Australia and Europe over the next 10 months.
Since March, the North American stretch of the tour has become an economic marvel and a cultural force, cementing Ms. Swift’s status as one of the most influential, and beloved, people on the continent . Now, she is set to demonstrate that her fame and adoration go well beyond borders.
There are few countries better to display the intense passion of her fans than Argentina. While Ms. Swift has become a certified global icon, Argentina has become known for worshiping icons with religious fervor.
Consider that Juan and Eva Perón became Argentina’s president and first lady in 1946 but are still lionized in political chants, are displayed in portraits in many Argentine homes and are the inspiration for a namesake political movement that still runs the country. Diego Maradona, the soccer star, became seen as such a deity here that tens of thousands of Argentines belong to the, yes, Church of Maradona , a legally recognized religion in its 25th year. And after Lionel Messi and the national soccer team won the World Cup last year, the crush of four million adoring fans during the victory parade forced the players to abandon their buses and fly over in a helicopter instead.
“She’s like the female Messi,” said Ms. Romeo, offering Ms. Swift about the highest praise an Argentine could nowadays. Some fans in Buenos Aires this week wore jerseys of the national soccer team with “SWIFT” on the back, while others passed out a sort of prayer card with Ms. Swift’s head superimposed over Jesus Christ’s.
So it was no surprise that Ms. Swift’s arrival in Argentina became a national event. It received intense news coverage; Buenos Aires named her an official guest of honor; and she became a figure in next week’s presidential election after some of her fans organized against the far-right candidate, Javier Milei. Meteorologists even described forecasts for sun or rain this weekend as “dry Swifties” or “wet Swifties.” (Friday called for “wet Swifties,” so organizers rescheduled that show for Sunday.)
“Everyone in the country knows her, and everyone knows about this show,” Renata Schyfys, 15, said at the show on Thursday, wearing at least six inches of friendship bracelets, which have become a badge of Swiftie fandom.
In a country of 46 million people, Ms. Swift sold roughly 200,000 tickets across three sold-out shows, and yet the waiting list still had more than 2.8 million people — enough to fill Argentina’s biggest soccer arena, El Monumental, another 40 times.
That stadium was shaking on Thursday night with near-constant, ear-piercing screams coming from the more than 70,000 fans there who repeatedly chanted, “Olé, olé, olé, olé, Taylor, Taylor.”
Even Ms. Swift, who has seen her share of huge crowds, seemed taken aback. “I am looking out to possibly what might be one of the most epic crowds to ever exist,” she told the audience. “This is on another level.”
Later, she removed her earpieces and motioned that she was struggling to hear over the roar of the crowd. She paused for a full two minutes, soaking in her fans’ adoration.
“I don’t know how to thank you enough for the way you’re treating me tonight,” she said. “I love you so, so much, and I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to come see you.”

The show on Thursday was Ms. Swift’s first major concert in South America, the first of nine this month in Argentina and Brazil. After waiting for so long, many Swifties on Thursday said they had made a sort of pilgrimage, many from across the continent.
Nahuel Ochoa, a medical student wearing a homemade bedazzled jumpsuit and a glittery jacket, had taken a bus with 50 other fans from the city of San Luis, 12 hours away. Unable to get a room in Buenos Aires, where hotels were nearly sold out, he was planning to take the bus back after the show — and then return on Saturday to see Ms. Swift again.
“We have loved Taylor since we were 10 years old — we have been waiting 13 years,” Mr. Ochoa, 23, said, sitting alongside his childhood friend Andrea Garro. “Her songs reflect the majority of what we go through. It’s a form of expressing ourselves in a way that we can’t.”
Ms. Garro, 23, a law student, added that Ms. Swift’s music helped her get past a deep depression. “We feel seen,” she said.
But there was no show of devotion greater than the more than 100 fans who camped out in shifts outside the stadium for months. After Ms. Romeo and her friends staked out their spot and attracted local news attention, other tents followed.
The group of mostly young women set up shifts using a spreadsheet, with ideally at least two people present at the tent at all times. The 30 members of Ms. Romeo’s tent had to spend a minimum of 40 hours there a month, with each member spending about 10 to 12 nights at the tent on average. After spending the first few days sleeping with just blankets, they added a mattress.
“She has the best relationship with her fans and is the one that can achieve this sort of mania,” said Lucas Forte, 24, a member of another tent who had slept outside the stadium for five nights since September. “No one camped out for the Weeknd, for example.”
Ms. Swift herself was impressed with the effort. “I heard you guys were camping out to get good spots?” she asked the crowd on Thursday. “I actually didn’t believe it until I saw a video.”
The fans camping out were not holding a place to get tickets to the show. Those were all sold online. Rather, the tents were set up so they could be first in line when the doors to the show opened and the fans could sprint to the guardrails along the stage for a closer view.
Event organizers helped make sure the fans who had camped out were first in line — yet many still ended up behind rows of people whose pricier tickets had allowed them to enter even earlier.
But some campers eventually reached the barricade along the stage.
“I smashed my knee trying to get there,” said Atenas Astuni, 23, a member of the first-in-line tent, her voice hoarse the Friday morning after the show. “But if I had to smash my knee again to repeat exactly what happened yesterday, I would do it without hesitation.”
