The Tour Down Under is (Finally!) Back for 2023—Here’s How to Watch

The 2023 pro cycling road racing season officially kicks off with the return of the Tour Down Under, and we’re ready.

Headshot of Natascha Grief

What is even more exciting is that the women’s race, even though only three stages to the men’s five stages plus a prologue , will be part of the UCI WorldTour for the first time, making the Tour Down Under women’s race the first UCI Women’s WorldTour stage race in the southern hemisphere. Like, ever.

The women’s and men's races both unofficially kick off with a race before the race, when the riders line up for the curtain-raising circuit race on January 14th.

Headshot of Natascha Grief

Natascha Grief got her first bike shop job before she was old enough to drink. After a six-year stint as a mechanic, earning a couple pro-mechanic certifications and her USA Cycling Race Mechanics license, she became obsessed with framebuilding and decided she wanted to do that next.  After Albert Eistentraut literally shooed her off his doorstep, admonishing that if she pursued framebuilding she will be poor forever, she landed an apprenticeship with framebuilder Brent Steelman in her hometown of Redwood City, CA. After that, she spent several years working for both large and not-so-large cycling brands. Somewhere in there she also became a certified bike fitter. Natascha then became a certified personal trainer and spent nine years honing her skills as a trainer and coach, while also teaching Spin. During the dumpster fire that was the year 2020, she opened a fitness studio and began contributing regularly to Runner’s World and Bicycling as a freelance writer. In 2022, she joined the staff of Bicycling as News Editor.

The Tour Down Under is back for 2023, and here’s how you can catch all of the action live on TV, streaming online or on catch-up.

After two years in which the traditional season-opener for pro road racing was cancelled due to Covid-related travel restrictions, the racing starts on Saturday 14 January 2023 and continues throughout the following week, culminating on Sunday 22 January 2023.

This year, both the men’s and women’s races are UCI WorldTour accredited, the latter for the first time.

How can I watch the Tour Down Under 2023 live in the UK?

tour down under 2023 where are they now

Eurosport will once again be showing live coverage of the Tour Down Under. As usual with racing in Australia, it’s one for the insomniacs if you want to watch live in the UK, with coverage starting either at midnight for the women’s racing or 1am for the men’s stages . Early risers can catch the men’s prologue at a more sociable 7.30am though.

As usual, there’s an on-demand option if you value your shuteye.

Eurosport is being subsumed into Discovery+ , with a subscription costing £6.99 per month or £59.99 per year. It’s available on a range of platforms including tablets, mobile, TV with Chromecast or AirPlay, Android TV and Apple TV.

You can also watch the Tour Down Under on GCN+ . A monthly subscription to GCN+ costs £6.99, the same as Discovery+; an annual subscription to GCN+ costs £39.99.

How can I watch the Tour Down Under 2023 live in the US?

According to the Tour Down Under website, NBC Sports should be showing live coverage of the Tour Down Under, although there are no cycling events currently showing as scheduled on the NBC Sports site.

You can also watch the Tour Down Under on FloBikes , with subscription options costing from $12.49 a month.

Both offer on-demand replays, although US live racing times are a bit more user-friendly than in Europe, with typical stage starts at 8pm Eastern, 5pm Pacific.

How can I watch the Tour Down Under 2023 live in Australia?

Seven West Media will be broadcasting the Tour Down Under in Australia, accessed via the 7plus streaming service . You can find the full list of broadcast times for each stage online.

There’s a full list of broadcasters in other countries on the Tour Down Under website.

How can I follow the Tour Down Under 2023 if I can’t watch live coverage?

The Tour Down Under YouTube channel is a good option for highlights and race background, including route overviews.

Here’s a run-down of the racing schedule and stages.

2023 Schwalbe Classic schedule and stage profile

Both the women’s and men’s racing starts with the Schwalbe Classic crit on Saturday 14 January, with a 5.30pm local time start in the centre of Adelaide for the women’s race and a 7pm start for the men’s race.

Both races take in a flat 1.35km loop around central Adelaide and each lasts for one hour, plus a final lap. There are sprint primes 15, 30 and 45 minutes into the races. Expect fast-paced racing, hopefully without any crashes to take riders out for the rest of the week.

2023 Women’s Tour Down Under schedule and stage profiles

This year, the women’s Tour Down Under is UCI WorldTour accredited for the first time, The three stages are designed for different types of rider, with Stage One likely a sprint finish, Stage Two a stage for the puncheurs and Stage Three a climbing stage. The organisers reckon the ochre leader’s jersey may change shoulders each day.

The five subsequent stages feature a mix of longer circuits and some big climbs, with a final-day summit finish on Mount Lofty – the first time it’s been on a Tour Down Under route and climbed five times over the course of the final stage.

2023 Dates Announced

Santos tour down under is back next summer.

The world’s best cyclists will race in South Australia from 13-22 January 2023 as the Santos Tour Down Under makes a bold return.

Ten action-packed days and nights await fans at the UCI WorldTour event, which is set to launch the international cycling calendar for the first time since 2020.

Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison said the Santos Tour Down Under would again share South Australia with a global audience and deliver a significant economic benefit to the state.

“Major events like the Santos Tour Down Under support South Australia’s tourism industry in its covid recovery and boost confidence across the sector,” Ms Bettison said.

“We look forward to welcoming fans to this celebration of cycling and sharing the food, wine, regions and city vibrancy that make South Australia such a great state.”

In 2020 the Santos Tour Down Under attracted 44,800 visitors from interstate and overseas, injecting $66.4 million into the South Australian economy and creating the equivalent of 742 full-time jobs.

Its 2021 and 2022 editions were replaced by the Santos Festival of Cycling, which featured National Road Series races for men and women, domestic competition across a further five cycling disciplines and fan activities including the City of Adelaide Festival Village.

Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Stuart O’Grady OAM said he and the event team looked forward to delivering Australia’s greatest cycling race.

“I can say emphatically and with great excitement that we are ready,” O’Grady said.

“World cycling is heading back to South Australia – mark those calendars and make your plans to share the celebration. We can’t wait to see you.”

O’Grady is currently spending four weeks in Europe, meeting with many of the teams set to compete at the next Santos Tour Down Under – and who have missed kick starting their season in South Australia.

“Elite cyclists love starting their seasons in South Australia and the amazing welcome they receive from fans here. For many of the teams, the Santos Tour Down Under is their favourite race experience of the year,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing familiar faces who we haven’t seen in South Australia since the 2020 Santos Tour Down Under, as well as riders who are experiencing the event for the first time.”

Santos Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Gallagher said the company was proud to support the event and recognised its broad community benefits.

“Supporting events and initiatives that make a positive contribution to the South Australian community is important to Santos,” Mr Gallagher said.

“We’re excited to see the Tour Down Under back in 2023. We’re looking forward to the full event returning to the streets of South Australia, bringing people together and driving economic benefits for the state.

“Competition for events like the Tour Down Under is strong and Santos is committed to supporting the event to keep it in South Australia so that Adelaide and surrounding regional communities reap the economic benefits that flow from the huge number of international and Australian tourists who come to South Australia for this world class event.”

The Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide and regional South Australia from 13-22 January 2023.

Luke Plapp

The Tour Down Under marks the beginning of the new WorldTour season for both the men’s and women’s peloton.

Returning to the calendar after a two-year absence due to the global pandemic, the race will see multiple big name riders get their campaigns underway as they look to build form ahead of the coming months. Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroen) and Luke Plapp (Ineos Grenadiers) are three homegrown heroes who will be due to race in Adelaide.

Grace Brown (FDJ-Suez) will also be one to watch.

Both the men’s and women’s action will begin with the Schwalbe Classic, an evening criterium on Saturday 14 January. However the criterium will have no say in the overall general classification battle. The men’s race will get underway on Tuesday 17 January with a 5.5 kilometre prologue, whereas the women’s race will begin the day after the criterium on Sunday 15 January with a flat 110.4 kilometre stage between Glenelg and Aldinga.

According to Hindley , the short and explosive stages will make for what he believes will be “fun and aggressive racing”. Check out the full start list here .

2023 Tour Down Under Odds and Predictions

The 2023 WorldTour in Cycling begins this weekend with the 23 rd edition of the Santos Tour Down Under on Saturday, January 14 in Adelaide, South Australia.

The 2023 TDU will see both the Men and Women returning, with the ladies back after a 2-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Men’s Tour Down Under will officially begin on Tuesday, January 17 with a 5.5 kilometer prologue time trial in the parks located north of Adelaide.

The changes to the men’s race should create a more open and thrilling tour, with the prologue time trial making local resident Rohan Dennis (Jumbo-Visma) an overall favorite without ruling out other riders during the race before the final showdown on Mount Lofty.

The Men’s Tour Down Under was last contested in 2020 and saw Australian Richie Porte win for a second time. Porte (5-7½, 127), races for UCI WorldTeam Ineos Grenadiers but he won’t be defending his title in Australia in the first major WorldTour peloton race of the new year 2023.

Cyclists from European countries headed to Australia last week so that they could acclimate from the 24 hours of airline flights and the brutal reality that it is Winter in the Northern Hemisphere right now. The early arrival also allows them to get a final block of training in Down Under.

Tour Down Under Betting Odds

Look for Tour Down Under odds at Cycling betting sites closer to the start of the 5-stage race, but the teams are known and we have a pretty good idea of who the top teams and riders should be and enough to offer up some Tour Down Under predictions for both the Men and the Women.

The United Kingdom-based UCI WorldTeam Ineos Grenadiers provided the last TDU winner. The team is back and is as strong as ever with the following riders:

The Ineos Grenadiers, Dennis and the Netherlands Jumbo-Visma, the Australian national team, and the UAE’s UAE Team Emirates are some of the stronger Men’s teams in the 2023 TDU.

It’s good to be back 🇦🇺🤝 Almost time to get the road season started and that means #TourDownUnder ! pic.twitter.com/TJ2wtYDXGO — INEOS Grenadiers (@INEOSGrenadiers) January 11, 2023

Looking at some 2023 UCI tour’s big races and their Futures odds, Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard and Slovenian Tadej Pogačar are co-favorites to win the 2023 Tour de France favorites at +115 at BetUS with Remco Evenepoel (+105) and Primož Roglič (2/1) as the 2023 Giro d’Italia favorites.

The temperatures in Adelaide right now are around 69°F (21°C) but are expected to climb for the later stages in the race this month. The winners of the lowest time in each stage are honored with the wearing of the Ochre Jersey.

The next race up on the 2023 UCI World Tour calendar will be on Sunday, January 29 with the 2023 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. The 2023 UCI World Tour will stage 35 races this calendar year, ending with the Tour de Guangxi in China on October 17.

The 2023 Giro d’Italia is set for May 6 through May 28, the 2023 Tour de France is scheduled for July 1 through July 23, and the 2023 Vuelta a España is scheduled from Saturday, August 26 through Sunday, September 17 with the Cycling Triple Crown race starting out in Barcelona.

Handicapping the Men’s, Women’s 2023 TDU Races

With five of the last seven and seven of the last 10 TDU Men’s winners being from Australia, backing an Australian rider no matter what team he might ride for seems like a solid betting strategy for this race.

Caleb Ewan leads the Australian team and should be among the Tour Down Under odds favorites when out. Besides Ewan, the Australian National Team also includes Jarrad Drizners, Graeme Frisilie, Connor Leahy, Zac Marriage, James Moriarty, and Liam Walsh.

Aussie and 2022 Giro d’Italia winner Jai Hindley leads the talented Bora-Hansgrohe Team which includes riders Marco Haller (Austria), Shane Archbold (New Zealand), Luis-Joe Luhrs (Germany), Jordi Meeus (Belgium), Maximilian Schachmann (Germany), and Giovanni Aleotti (Italy).

Italian Alberto Bettiol leads the EF Education-EasyPost Team from the US, one of the top of the 20 teams in the race, and Mikkel Honore (Denmark), Jens Keukeleire (Belgium), Sean Quinn (US), Jonas Rutch (Germany), Thomas Scully (NZ), and Lukasz Wisiniowski (Poland) are his teammates.

Maybe the team to beat is the Ineos Grenadiers, with elite riders like Ethan Hayter and Geraint Thomas. Brother Leo Hayter (UK), Kim Heiduk (Germany), Luke Plapp (Australia), Magnus Sheffield (USA), and Ben Swift (UK) will prove to be a hard team to beat in this season lid-lifter.

Australian Rohan Dennis, a previous TDU winner, and his Netherlands’ Jumbo-Visma team of Robert Gesink (Netherlands), Lennard Hofstede (Netherlands), Timo Roosen (Netherlands), Milan Vader (Netherlands), Timo Van Dijke (Netherlands), and Jos Van Emden (Netherlands) are threats.

We’re now only a few days out from the first Women’s WorldTour race of the 2023 season We got a teaser of who’s in form at Aussie Nats – Brodie for sure with Spratt looking very dangerous as well https://t.co/wTZE5lzdU5 — Mathew Mitchell (@MatMitchell30) January 12, 2023

Santos Tour Down Under Women’s Winners

  • 2020— Ruth Winder, USA (Trek–Segafredo)
  • 2019 —Amanda Pratt, Australia (Mitchelton–Scott)
  • 2018 —Amanda Pratt, Australia (Mitchelton–Scott)
  • 2017— Amanda Pratt, Australia (Orica–Scott)
  • 2016— Katrin Garfoot, Australia (Orica-AIS)

The Australians have also done very well in the Women’s races of the Tour Down Under, although there have only been five of them since inception in 2016, with Aussies winning the first four years (2016-2019), so the handicapping angle here is simple. Aussies do very well racing in Australia.

Some of the stronger Women’s teams in the 2023 coming TDU are the American Trek-Segafredo Team with 3-time TDU winner Amanda Spratt and the Australian Jayco-Alula Team.

Along with Aussie sensation Spratt—likely the Women’s Tour Down Under betting odds favorite in the Cycling Futures market—the Trek-Segafredo Team also includes Lauretta Hanson (Australia), Brodie Chapman (Australia), Tayler Wiles (USA), Lisa Klein (Germany), and Ilaria Sanguinti (Italy).

And watch the American team EF Education-Tibco-SVB with Lauren Stephens (USA), Emma Langley (USA), Krista Doebel-Hickok (USA), Abigail Smith (UK), and Georgia Williams (NZ).

But for me, it’s Australian Spratt and the Trek-Segafredo Team or Australian Brown and FDJ-Suez in this opening race of the year.

An Aussie wins this race for the fourth time in six incarnations and makes both her home nation and American team proud in one fell swoop.

Taylor Swift Continues Her International Era(s Tour)

Portrait of Justin Curto

Update, Thursday, November 2, 2023: Is it the end of the era? Not just yet. Taylor Swift has once again extended her Eras Tour, this time adding three new dates to the previously announced Canada leg with opener Gracie Abrams. This means that after circling the globe, the tour that reportedly helped make Swift a billionaire is set to conclude in Vancouver in December 2024 … for now, at least.

Update, Wednesday, July 5, 2023: Taylor Swift isn’t leaving international Swifties on their own, kid. The superstar announced that she’s taking her Eras tour to Latin America, Asia, Australia, and Europe through 2024. “I can’t wait to see so many of you on The Eras Tour next year at these new international dates!” tweeted Swift on June 19. Swift is also bringing an old Nashville friend along for the newly expanded European run: Hayley Williams, who collaborated on Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , and Paramore will be opening the tour. That’s along with the new friend in tow for some other international dates, Sabrina Carpenter. The international leg now consists of 78 dates so far, adding up to 131 Eras tour shows total, making this Swift’s largest tour ever . Fans noticed an April-sized gap in the schedule, causing speculation for a possible Coachella headlining set. It could also just be a much-needed break for the “Lavender Haze” singer after non-stop touring for the past year. Or maybe her schedule is flexible like a goddamn acrobat; it’s up to karma to decide.

Original story follows.

Now that you’ve met her at midnight, how about on tour? Taylor Swift will be spending a lot of midnights on the road in 2023, she told fans on Good Morning America on November 1, instead of the assumed 3 a.m. announcement last week. Swift is set to tour stadiums in the U.S. for the first time since her 2018 Reputation outing with her newly announced Eras Tour, “a journey through the musical eras of my career (past & present!).” Swift went on to nearly double the number of dates on the tour, adding two more batches of new concerts “due to unprecedented demand,” her team told Variety . (It still wasn’t enough to prevent a total meltdown on Ticketmaster .) She has a whole slew of openers included in the lineup — depending on where you live, your Eras Tour may include Paramore, beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, girl in red, MUNA, HAIM, GAYLE, Gracie Abrams, or OWENN (shout-out to Paramore, Bridgers, and Abrams for somehow being the only ones not to have fun with capitalization in their names). The tour kicked off March 17 in Glendale, Arizona (famously not the land of the Kardashians , so Swift is safe there), and ends August 9 in sunny L.A.

She originally planned two Lover Fest performances in 2020 , behind her seventh album, but canceled those because of the pandemic. That makes the Eras tour Swift’s first run of shows in four albums: Lover , her 2020 surprises folklore and evermore , and Midnights , something the tour announcement alludes to with photos of her throughout her career. She also has two rerecorded albums to promote, Red and Fearless — and, hey, that ten-minute “All Too Well” is going to be a hell of a showstopper.
