Goddess Hathor - 8 Days (5 stars)

"Fabiola Gayosso I really enjoyed this tour! We had plenty of time to visit each site, and overall the days were well organized with an occasional schedule change. My tour guide was Nabil Shohdy, and he has been one of the most effective tour guides I have traveled with of the many tours I have taken. He paid great attention to his clients and their needs, and did all that he could to provide us with a safe and delightful trip. He gave us necessary advice - such as what to avoid or what to expect from certain areas - as well as consistently updated us if any changes to the schedule took place. He was punctual, kept an upbeat attitude, and I found him to be extremely patient. Not once did he rush us to finish up exploring the sites or finish taking pictures. I appreciated his passion and willingness to share his knowledge. He also encouraged us to make inquiries regarding the history and culture of Egypt, and was eager to answer them. It is important to note that he also considered to help us with any issues. I find these to be crucial traits for a tour guide to have. Not once did I feel uncomfortable or displeased with his service, I believe that Nabil handled any complications appropriately and was a joy to have as a guide."

"Well there are tour guides and then there is Sameh. I am sorry to say that you have spoilt it for all future tours as no one will be able to live up to my expectations now. Your knowledge of the country with the history, geography and life in the areas was astonishing. Your passion for your country was infectious and showed in the way you communicated with us. I am not sure where your patience came from as I know you had little peace and quiet from our texts and calls. You were able to manipulate arrangements to accommodate most of us, a skill of its own. Thank you Sameh for making my Troy even more special"

""Wa-el is an exceptional tour guide whose warm personality and expertise made our 3-night, 4-day trip an unforgettable experience. Despite early morning starts, his cheerful attitude, punctuated with the friendly term 'Habibi', brightened our days. His knowledge and passion for the sites we visited were evident, making every tour informative and engaging. Wa-el is truly a gem who adds a personal touch to the travel experience." Hamsan & Sre"

"It is difficult to put into words what I feel after this life changing trip, if you take anything away from this review let it be book now, don't hesitate or overthink I promise you will not regret going. The trip was well organized and went off without hiccups, our main contact was Ahmed who was available 24/7 and did everything to ensure our trip went well and that we were satisfied. Aside from the regular itinerary Ahmed and our guides went out of their way to meet every request and desire we voiced. Our guide Howaida in Cairo was the most incredible human you'll ever meet, she is so welcoming, loving and knowledgeable, and quickly became known as "mama" to our group. The local people, food, culture, history, it was all just incredible and so hard to come home from. This trip will change your life and I can already not wait to return!"

"The overall trip was great, there are such amazing sites to see in egypt that left me in awe. The organisation of the tour however was pretty slack, with little communication especially the first couple of days. There was very little option for meals that wernt included and some days lunch was skipped and dinner had to be at the hotel which was over priced. So if you choose to go i wound 100% recommend you buy heaps of snacks for the meals you miss out on. Our tour guild Mina malik was extremely helpful and informative"

Of all the various tours we’ve been on in other countries, he’s been one of the best. Kaethe and Bill"

"Just returned home on Jan 31 - our 3rd Expat tour and we cannot say enough positive about this organization. Highly adaptable and ensuring that our trip captured all the essential spots in Egypt. It was very evident that our safety and experience were very important to them and it was truly appreciated. As always the accommodations were clean and had all the necessities for your stay (3-4 star accommodations). The food was plentiful and a great variety. Our guide Mina made a special point to call out must try delicacies and arranged for them to be waiting for us. Our guide in Egypt Mina Nashaat was exceptional! His English spoken and comprehension is on par with a native English speaker. He is extremely personable and brought an extremely positive and fun atmosphere to the trip. He was always available to answer the silliest of questions that came to mind. Always three steps ahead of you to ensure a seamless experience. This once in a lifetime experience would not have been the same without him and I cannot say enough positive about him. A true gem and asset to Expat and Timeless tours....be sure to ask for him when you book....you will not be disappointed. To illustrate over and above, I had my 51st birthday on the felucca which by itself was an amazing experience. I was not expecting all the boat operators to break out drums and sing Happy birthday to me in English and Arabic. Our guide Mina arranged for a cake to be delivered as well and it was delicious! As a final gesture i was presented with a sandlewood ankh (key of life) as a gift....a memorable experience that Mina made possible and I will never forget it."

"My son and I had an awesome time with Vacations to Go. Michael and guides Bassem in Cairo and Mansour in Aswan made our trip memorable. They were not only friendly but also went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed every moment. Even my son felt included and had a great time. It was a fantastic adventure, and if you're thinking about visiting this beautiful country, Vacations to Go is the way to go. Thanks a lot!"

Reviews of Egypt Tours from Cairo

"At first a was very disappointed with the quality of the place we stayed but they kindness compensated for the lack of hygiene in some place , our guide was fantastic with a lot of knowledge and I appreciated the effort tour Egypt did to make sure we were happy overall i have beautiful memories that i will cherish forever , it was my first time organizing a group of 17 people to travel with me and they already asking me when I will organize the next one so i guess it was a success! Thanks tour radar and tour Egypt for helping me concretize the dream of many people’s, until next time !"
"THIS is the Egyptian tour of all tours! Our guide King Mina is your missing puzzle - so informative & fun to be around, SO many laughs had and SO much learnt. He went absolutely above and beyond to accommodate and make sure we didn’t go without! Cannot recommend enough, there isn’t one fault - from the converse prior to the tour start, the accommodation, food, service, transfers and all until the very end! A real home away from home! This is your sign to just BOOK IT - thank you expat!!!"

15 Amazing Things to Do in Cairo, Egypt

Julie Last updated: January 28, 2024 Egypt 15 Comments

Cairo Egypt Best Things To Do

Cairo…this sprawling, historic, ancient city is most visitors’ first stop on a trip through Egypt. The Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum top the list for most, but there is a lot more to see and do in this city. To help you plan your visit, here are the best things to do in Cairo.

Not everything on this list is located in Cairo. Several places are located in or near Giza (such as the Pyramids of Giza and Saqqara). I am including them in this article, even though they are not technically located in Cairo, because most people visit these places while staying in Cairo.

Table of Contents

Interesting Facts About Cairo

Cairo is the capital of Egypt. Over nine million people call Cairo home, with an additional 10 million living just outside of the city. This entire metropolitan area is the largest in Africa and the Middle East.

It is located on the Nile River, right where the desert transitions into the Nile delta. Giza sits on the west bank of the Nile River, just 5 km southwest of Cairo, so these two cities seem to blend into one another.

Cairo is called “the city of a thousand minarets,” for its predominance of Islamic architecture. Most people who live in Cairo are Muslim, however, about 10% of the population are Christians who belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church.

Cairo has a hot desert climate. Rainfall is rare but most likely to occur during the winter months. During the summer, daytime highs typically reach 35°C (95°F) with high humidity, due to Cairo’s location near the Mediterranean Sea. It is much more pleasant to visit Cairo in the winter, with daytime highs of 20°C (68°F).

Best Things to Do in Cairo

The pyramids of giza.

For many people, the Pyramids of Giza not only top the to-do list in Cairo, but they are also the biggest tourist attraction in Egypt.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the last intact ancient Wonder of the World. This pyramid, along with the others that sit on the Giza Plateau, form one of the most recognizable sights in the world.

Pyramids of Giza

A visit here typically lasts at least three hours. Go inside the Great Pyramid, take selfies with the Great Sphinx, and visit the panoramic viewpoints of the pyramids.

Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum contains the world’s largest collection of Egyptian artifacts. Highlights of a visit include seeing the solid gold mask and the golden sarcophagi of Tutankhamun, the Royal Mummies room, and a mind-blowing number of statues, jewelry, and treasures.

Egyptian Museum

A visit here typically lasts two hours. The Egyptian Museum is located on Tahrir Square in Cairo. To get here, we recommend hiring a driver and guide, but you can also use Uber, taxis, or public transportation. It takes roughly 30 minutes to travel between the Giza Plateau and the Egyptian Museum.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to open sometime in mid-2024, although this date changes frequently. Once open, it will replace the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square. The Grand Egyptian Museum is massive…it’s so big that our guide, Laila, joked that you would need a tuk-tuk to see all of it. This museum is also conveniently located next to the Giza Plateau, so it will be very easy to combine these two sites without needing to navigate the streets of Cairo.

Cost: 450 EGP adults, 230 EGP student with valid ID Hours: 9 am to 5 pm

Islamic Cairo

Islamic Cairo is the historic heart of Cairo. This area contains one of the largest collections of historic architecture in the Islamic world. Numerous mosques, madrassas, fortifications, and tombs date from the Islamic era of Egypt (639 to the early 16th century), making Cairo one of the world’s oldest Islamic cities.

In 1979, Islamic Cairo became a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Islamic Cairo is packed with things to see and do. It’s a fairly large area, located near the city center. You could spend days wandering the labyrinth of streets in Islamic Cairo, but for most visitors, just seeing the highlights is sufficient.

Top things to do in Islamic Cairo include:

  • Salah El-Din Citadel

Al-Muizz li-Din Allah al-Fatima Street

  • Bab Zuweila

Khan el-Khalili

  • Ibn Tulun Mosque
  • Al-Azhar Mosque: one of Cairo’s oldest mosques
  • Museum of Islamic Art

Al-Azhar Park

  • Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan
  • Al-Rifa’i Mosque

If you want to visit everything on this list, it takes a full day. And what a memorable day it will be. Islamic Cairo can feel chaotic and overwhelming, but the sights, the food, and the people make this the most interesting part of Cairo, in my opinion.

Salah El Din Citadel

From its strategic position on the Mokattam hills in central Cairo sits the Citadel of Saladin. For almost 700 years (from the 13th to 19th centuries), this was the seat of government in Egypt. In 1976, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As you move around Cairo, you will see the Citadel from almost everywhere, because of its prominent location on the Mokattam hills.

The main attraction is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. The mosque was completed in 1857, in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali’s oldest son. It is modeled after the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

Mosque of Muhammad Ali

This mosque is also called the “Alabaster Mosque.” Alabaster covers the interior of the mosque as well as the courtyard.

The clock tower in the courtyard was given to Egypt by King Louis Philippe of France in 1845. In return, the obelisk that originally stood at the entrance of Luxor Temple now stands in Place de la Concorde in Paris.

While at the Citadel, make sure you visit Gawhara Terrace for one of the best views over the city. From here, you have a great view over historic Cairo, Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, and Al-Rifa’i Mosque. On a clear day, you will be able to see the Pyramids of Giza.

Guwhara Terrace

Cost: 450 EGP adults; 230 EGP student with valid ID Camera Ticket: None, you are permitted to take photos with a camera at no extra charge Shoe Covers: 5 EGP; before entering the Muhammad Ali Mosque, you will need to remove your shoes. You can take them with you (free) or pay 5 EGP to keep your shoes on but wear shoe covers Scarf: Women need to bring a scarf to cover their head Hours: 8 am to 5 pm

This is a very important street with a very long name. Called al-Muizz for short, this is one of the oldest streets in Cairo. It runs north-south through Islamic Cairo and it contains some of the most important monuments of historic Cairo.

Al Muizz Street

This street is roughly 1 km long, running from Bab Zuweila in the south to Bab al-Futuh in the north. It is a busy, congested, noisy street and for some visitors it can feel overwhelming. Along this short stretch of road are an astonishing number of madrassas, mosques, shops, markets, and hammams.

PRO TRAVEL TIP: A madrassa is a Muslim school, college or university that is often part of a mosque. A hammam is a middle eastern type of steam bath for cleansing the body.

Just south of Bab Zuweila and al-Muizz street is the Tent Makers Market. On this 300-meter street, small shops sell colorful textiles and handmade blankets, cushions, bed covers, and tents. Continue the walk south to visit a produce market and numerous small shops in Islamic Cairo.

Tent Market Cairo

Walking al-Muizz was one of our favorite experiences in Cairo. It can be sensory overload, in a good way, in my opinion. Yes, it’s noisy and chaotic, but the people are friendly, the street food is delicious, and to walk down one of the oldest streets in Cairo is an unforgettable experience.

Climb the Minaret at Bab Zuweila

Bab Zuweila is the southern gate on the walls of Fatimid Cairo. It dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries and it is one of the last remaining gates of the Old City of Cairo.

Bab Zuweila

Walk up several flights of stairs for a nice view from the terrace on top of the gate.

Best Things to do in Cairo Islamic Cairo

For a spectacular view of historic Cairo and al-Muizz street, you can climb both of the minarets.

Bab Zuweila Minaret

Overlooking Sultan al-Muayyad Mosque

PRO TRAVEL TIP: A very narrow, spiral staircase winds its way up to the top of the minaret. Without any windows, it is almost total darkness for a short part of the climb, so make sure you bring a flashlight (the flashlight on your phone is sufficient). To step out onto the ledge, you will have to climb up one last narrow metal narrow staircase, step over a gap, and then climb over a waist-high wall. Skip the minaret climb if you suffer from claustrophobia or are not nimble enough to climb over the wall. Young kids should also skip this climb.

Khan el-Khalili is the famous shopping market in Islamic Cairo. It sits just off of al-Muizz street.

Khan el Khalili

I was really looking forward to Khan el-Khalili, but it was a disappointment. This market is filled with touristy souvenirs, and according to our guide Laila, most of what is for sale comes from China. I think it’s worth a quick visit, but al-Muizz street, the tent market, and the side streets off of al-Muizz are much more interesting.

Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i Mosque

These two mosques sit side by side and can easily be visited together.

Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is an enormous mosque that sits near the base of the Citadel. It was built between 1356 and 1363 during the Mamluk period.

Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan

Next door is Al-Rifa’i Mosque. It was constructed between 1869 and 1912 and commissioned by Lady Khushiar Hanim to expand and replace the existing shrine of the medieval Islamic saint Ahmed al-Rifa’i. Briefly, this mosque was the resting place of Reza Shah of Iran, who died in exile in 1944. His body was returned to Iran after World War II. The burial chamber is now occupied by his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who died in Cairo in 1980.

El Rifai Mosque

Al-Azhar is a quiet green space that sits in the center of Cairo. This is a great place to go for a walk and escape the chaos and congestion of the busy city streets.

Coptic Cairo

Coptic Cairo is located in Old Cairo in the southern part of the city. The first settlements here date back to the 6th century BC. Many of the places to visit here originate from Egypt’s Christian past, but you can also visit a synagogue and the first mosque built in Africa.

All of the sites in Coptic Cairo are free to visit with the exception of the Coptic Museum.

The Hanging Church

The Hanging Church, also called Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, is one of the oldest churches in Egypt. It is named for its position above a gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress, the Roman Fortress in Coptic Cairo. This is the most famous church in Coptic Cairo.

Hanging Church

Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus

This is believed to be the place where the Holy Family (Joseph, Mary, and Jesus Christ) sheltered at the end of their journey into Egypt. The interior of the church is beautiful, with detailed woodworking and tilework.

Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus

Ben Ezra Synagogue

This synagogue started off as a church. In 882, it was sold and converted into synagogue. It has been rebuilt and remodeled several times in the past 1000 years. It is said that this is where the baby Moses was found.

Mosque of Amr Ibn al-As

This is the first mosque built in Egypt and Africa. It was built in 641 to 642 AD.

Coptic Museum

This museum is home to the world’s largest collection of Coptic art work.

Egypt Travel Guide

Cave Church

The Monastery of Saint Simon , also known as the Cave Church, is located in the Mokattam hills of Cairo. This church can hold up to 20,000 people, making it the largest church in the Middle East.

Cave Church

The main church, the one that holds 20,000 people, is the summer church. There is a smaller church with a ceiling that is used in the winter months when rain is more likely.

The Cave Church is free to visit.

Garbage City

To get to the Cave Church, you will have to drive through Garbage City. Yes, you read that correctly…Garbage City.

Garbage City is named for the large number of garbage collectors who live here. Called the Zabbaleen, these are the descendants of farmers who migrated to Cairo from Upper Egypt in the 1940’s, fleeing poverty and poor harvests. They settled in the Mokattam hills and began sorting trash as a way to make money. Over the years, their population has grown to at least 30,000 people, an entire community that sorts trash for a living. The majority of the Zabbaleen are Coptic Christians.

An extremely narrow, dusty road winds its way through Garbage City to the Cave Church. This is a busy place, as trucks filled with trash arrive from all parts of the city. Rubber, metal, paper, and plastic are all sorted and packaged together, to later be sent to China and other places to be used in the manufacturing of new materials.

Garbage City

It may be a hard, dirty, unhealthy way of life, but everything has value and gets recycled and reused. In fact, I read that over 90% of the trash is recycled, a much higher average than what most western recycling companies produce.

Walk Across the Nile River on the Qasr El Nil Bridge

This is the first bridge to span the Nile River in Cairo. It connects Tahrir Square with Gezira Island.

Qasr el Nil Bridge

Cairo Tower

For the best view over Cairo, visit the Cairo Tower. Located on Gezira Island in Zamelek, you have 360° views over the city. On a clear day, you can see the Pyramids of Giza.

Cairo Tower

You can dine at the Sky Window Café or grab a table at the 360 Revolving Restaurant. The 360 Revolving Restaurant has a minimum purchase of 250 EGP per person.

Important Note: You will be asked to leave any food or snacks in the guardhouse at the base of the tower.

Day Trip to Dahshur, Memphis & Saqqara

A visit to Dahshur, Memphis and Saqqara is one of Egypt’s best history lessons.

Dahshur is an ancient, royal necropolis that is located 30 km south of Giza and 40 km south of Cairo.

Dahshur is where the ancient Egyptians perfected their pyramid-constructing skills. It is here that several of the first pyramids were built and it took a few tries to get things right. Visit the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, the precursors to the Pyramids of Giza.

Bent Pyramid

Bent Pyramid

Memphis was the first capital city of Egypt. A visit here is quick with a tour of the open-air museum.

Saqqara was the necropolis for the city of Memphis. It is here that you can see the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser and the oldest complete stone building complex in the world.

Saqqara

Step Pyramid of Djoser

A day trip to Dahshur, Memphis and Saqqara takes five to six hours, including transportation time from Cairo or Giza. It’s easiest to do this on a tour, but you can do this independently and hire a taxi.

For full details, read our article How to Plan Your Day Trip to Dahshur, Memphis and Saqqara.

Bonus! National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

One of our readers wrote in with this suggestion of a place to visit in Cairo. The NMEC opened in 2017. On the lower level, visitors to the museum walk past 22 mummies, organized in chronological order. The upper level contains information about the Egyptian civilization. This museum is located near Coptic Cairo and Islamic Cairo and could be combined with these areas. For the best experience, go on the weekend to avoid visiting when school field trips are in session.

Best Things to Do in Cairo: On a Map

How to Use This Map: Click the icons on the map to get more information about each point of interest. Click the star next to the title of the map to add this map to your Google Maps account. To view it on your phone or computer, open Google Maps, click the menu button, go to “Your Places,” click Maps, and you will see this map on your list.

How Much Time Do You Need in Cairo?

To visit everything on this list, you need a bare minimum of three days, and these will be three very busy days.

With one day in Cairo, I recommend visiting the Pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum.

With two days in Cairo, add on the day trip to Dahshur, Memphis and Saqqara and either visit Coptic Cairo or several of the sites in Islamic Cairo (al-Muizz Street, the Citadel, and Khan el-Khalili).

With three full days in Cairo, you can do everything on this list, just get an early start each day and it really helps to have a guide and driver to help make the most of your time.

Do You Need to Hire a Guide for Cairo?

Hiring a guide and driver has many benefits in Cairo: your transportation is taken care of, you get to visit the sites with a knowledgeable guide, and you get to learn a lot about the local culture and customs.

We hired Egypt Tailor Made, not only for our tour of Cairo, but also for the remainder of our time in Egypt.

The Cairo Pass gives you free entry to the sites in Cairo, Giza, Dahshur, Saqqara, and Mit Rahina.   These sites include the Egyptian Museum, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Coptic Museum, Saladin Citadel, all sites on the Giza Plateau, all sites at Saqqara, the Red and Bent Pyramids in Dahshur, and the sites in Historic Cairo.

The Cairo Pass costs $130 USD. It is valid for 5 days.

Points of sale for the Cairo Pass include the Egyptian Museum, the Giza Plateau, and Saladin Citadel.

You will need your passport, two black and white photocopies of your main passport page, and two passport photos. Students will need a valid student identification card. To purchase the Cairo Pass, you will pay with US dollars or euros and these need to be crisp, new bills, in perfect condition.

Is the Cairo Pass Worth It?

For most people, the answer is no. To make it worth the $130 USD, you need to visit A LOT of sites in Cairo and Giza, OR plan on more than one visit to the Giza Plateau and/or the Egyptian Museum. Plus, the US dollar is very strong in Egypt right now, which means that it might not be worth purchasing the Cairo Pass.

However, with the Cairo Pass, you can visit the Giza Plateau and the Egyptian Museum multiple times. These are the biggest ticket items in Cairo.

If you purchase the Cairo Pass, you get a 50% discount on the Luxor Pass, which could be worth it for some people. Learn more in our article about the Luxor Pass.

Where to Stay in Cairo

Marriott Mena House. This is where we stayed and it was fantastic. It was 8 pm and dark by the time we arrived at the hotel, but what a thrilling experience to see the Great Pyramid from our balcony. Breakfast is a buffet with endless choices of food (it’s one of the best hotel breakfasts we have had yet). Plus, you can sit outside and stare up at the Great Pyramid over a cup of coffee.

Marriott Mena House Cairo

Pyramids View Inn. This small hotel offers views of the Sphinx and the pyramids. The view from the rooftop terrace is amazing and this is a great place to watch the Sound and Light Show, without joining the crowds.

Great Pyramid Inn. This is yet another hotel that boasts amazing views of the Pyramids of Giza. From the top floor terrace you have an awesome view of the pyramids. Some rooms have views of the pyramids and/or a balcony. Fellow travelers have written in to us, raving about this hotel and its view from the rooftop.

The Nile Ritz-Carlton. If you have dreams of staying in a Ritz-Carlton without spending a small fortune, Cairo is the place to do it. This hotel is located right on Tahrir Square so it is just a short walk to the Egyptian Museum (until the Grand Egyptian Museum opens) and the Cairo Tower.

If you have any questions about these things to do in Cairo, let us know in the comment section below.

Hi We will arrive in cairo on 13 July and stay 3 nights . We pretty much just need a driver for the 3 days that can take us to the sites you mentioned excluding the step pyramids as we have been to egypt a few times . The driver must be OK in English to understand us and all we need is a taxi rate per day Fixed … Any suggestions as we do not need any tours nor guides …plain and simple if you can use those words in egypt ..lol

Any suggestions

Avatar for Julie

Hello Wayne. The only drivers that I know of are those associated with the tour company we used, Egypt Tailor Made. If you already have a hotel in Cairo booked, you could reach out with them. In the past, in other countries, we have hired private drivers through our hotel, or at least gotten the information from the hotel so we could set it up on our own. So, you could contact the hotel first and if that doesn’t work out, just see if you can hire a driver without a guide through Egypt Tailor Made. Cheers, Julie

Avatar for Dimitris

Thank you Julie for your prompt response! I will try to figure it out before my departure.

Kind regards, Dimitris

Dear earth trekkers,

I need your precious help once more. I understand that it’s been a while since you last visited Egypt, but do you know if there are still some traffic restrictions in travelling from Cairo to Alexandria by car? (I am talking about a rental car in which I will be the driver with the rest of my family as the passengers). I can find only scattered information searching the internet, and I wonder if moving in a guarded convoy is still the mandatory way to travel by car between these cities.

Thank you very much, Best regards, Dimitris

Hello Dimitris. Unfortunately, this is a question I do not know the answer to. But your rental car company should know the answer. Maybe there is a way that you can call the office where you will be picking up the rental car and hopefully they can give you more info. When we traveled from Luxor to Abydos and Luxor to Aswan, we did not travel in a caravan, but we had a guide and driver. That was in December 2019 and I don’t know if things have changed since then. I hope you get this figured out! Cheers, Julie

Hi there. Thank you so much for your Egypt content! I have to admit I spent most of my time planning my own trip in November by using this blog. Im also considering to get an Egyptologist for a portion of my trip because I wont be able to learn much without it. Hopefully my solo trip will work out!

You’re welcome and I hope you have a wonderful time on your upcoming trip. An Egyptologist is a great idea because the history is fascinating. Cheers, Julie

How did you get in touch with your private guide? Also how much do it cost?

We used Egypt Tailor Made with a guide for Cairo and a guide for Luxor + Aswan. Take a look at our post how much does it cost to visit Egypt and there is also a link to the tour company in this post. Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie, I contacted Egypt Taylor made, but they just referred me to their website. It appears you all got a great deal with the driver and guide package. I will be arriving in Egypt September 19th, and would love an equivalent deal for our group of six , but they are just charging individually and multiplying by 6 which is a bit too expensive for us! it ends up costing between $80 or more per person depending on the excursion. Do you know if they would be willing to give as a deal similar to what your family received? Cordially, Paula

It sounds like Egypt has become quite a popular travel destination over the last 9 to 12 months, even more so than during our visit in December 2019, so that could be why their prices have gone up. We don’t have any bargaining power with Egypt Tailor Made to help you get a better deal, unfortunately. Cheers, Julie

Hi Julie, Your blog is very informative and has helped me plan my Egypt trip. I had a query regarding the payment methods for entrance fees and local market purchases. I am confused about what currency should I carry, dollars or Egyptian pounds. Is it better to carry dollars and then exchange them in Egypt? Are ATMs easily accessible in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan? Is it easy to exchange dollars? Thanks much in advance 🙂

We used Egyptian pounds to pay for entrance fees, souvenirs, etc. Some hotels have an ATM or you can go to a bank to withdraw Egyptian pounds. You are limited in how much you can withdraw at an ATM at one time, so you will have to go a lot and/or use multiple ATM cards. We have more information about that here . Also consider getting the Cairo Pass and/or Luxor Pass because that could save you money and limit how many Egyptian pounds you will need. We haven’t exchanged currency in Egypt. When we show up, we go right to an ATM and withdraw what we need (we do this for every country that we visit). Cheers, Julie

Did you ever get burned out seeing all those “ pyramids “ ?

Good question! No, we never got burned out on seeing the pyramids. They always amazed us and I hope to see them again on our next visit to Egypt.

I thought that we would get burned out on seeing the tombs and temples in Luxor and Aswan, but the more that I learned about them, the more I wanted to see. They do kind of blend together after a little bit…but going back through my photos, and doing the research for these posts has taught me a lot. I can’t wait to go back some day and learn some more. 🙂 Cheers, Julie

Board your overnight flight to Cairo today.

Welcome to Egypt, where stories etched in stone await your discovery and your own Egypt story is set to unfold.

Transfer to your hotel and get settled in, there’s so much to see and savor ahead. This evening, enjoy an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Set off on a guided tour of Old Cairo, whose strategic location in the Nile River valley drew the area’s first settlements 2,000 years ago. You’ll explore labyrinthine alleys and ornate mosques as you learn more about Egypt’s history from your Egyptologist—who is also your Tour Director.

  • Enter the massive Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan—one of the most prestigious learning institutions in the Islamic world when it was built in the 14th century. Let your eyes linger over the elaborate Islamic geometric patterns, the peaceful courtyard, and the intricately designed mihrab (prayer niche)
  • Head next door to the equally impressive Rifa'i Mosque, also known as the Royal Mosque, where modern royal figures like the last Shah of Iran and the last King of Egypt have been laid to rest
  • View the Cairo Citadel, built in the 12th century by mighty Salah al-Din and originally used as a fortress, it remained as the seat of the Egyptian government until the 19th century

Don't miss your chance to experience Cairo’s multicultural diversity with an optional excursion that delves into its Coptic Christian and Jewish heritage, or use your free afternoon to venture out on your own. Perhaps the vibrant alleyways, artisan workshops, and colorful stalls of the historic Khan el-Khalili market will entice you.

Gather with your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner with beer or wine at a local restaurant this evening.

Please note: Travelers are required to remove shoes when entering the Mosques. Women must cover their hair, arms, and legs. Men must cover their legs.

Coptic Cairo

From $85 per person

Meet up with your Tour Director and set off on a guided tour of Giza, Egypt’s third-largest city and home to some of the world’s most enduring ancient monuments.

  • Uncover the Pyramids of Giza, the only Wonder of the Ancient World to have survived into the modern era. Standing as tall as 480 feet (146 meters) when it was built, the Great Pyramid of Giza continues to amaze with its size and the precision with which it was constructed
  • Visit the enigmatic, 4,500-year-old Great Sphinx, the largest monolith statue in the world, carved from a single limestone bedrock
  • Enter the Grand Egyptian Museum, said to be the world’s largest museum, and explore the vast collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts alongside your Egyptologist
  • Enjoy an included lunch at a local restaurant

Please note: If the Grand Egyptian Museum is not yet open to the public, a visit to the Egyptian Antiquities Museum will take its place.

Dine like an Egyptian by adding an optional excursion for a home-hosted dinner where you can sample Egypt’s complex traditional flavors like dukkah and fenugreek.

Cairo Home-Hosted Dinner

From $129 per person

Make your way to the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria, stopping along the way in the desert oasis of Wadi El Natrun, or the Valley of Salt, whose vast salt lakes are known for their distinctive pinkish-red hue. Wadi El Natrun is also renowned for its historical monastic settlements and the valley is home to several ancient Coptic Christian monasteries dating back to the 4th century, some of which are still active today.

  • Uncover the history of how ancient Egyptians once harvested Natrun salt in the area, a key component of the mummification process
  • Enter a local monastery and learn how Wadi El Natrun became a haven to early Christians escaping persecution from the Roman Empire

Continue to Alexandria where you’ll sit down for an included dinner with beer or wine this evening.

Set out to get to know Egypt’s second-largest city and explore centuries-old ruins. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, the city became a major center for Hellenistic culture. Expect a lush Mediterranean coastline, historical sites, and a thriving contemporary art scene in this cultural and educational hub.

  • Enter the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a major library and cultural center on Alexandria’s Mediterranean coast, paying homage and recapturing the spirit of the bygone Great Library of Alexandria
  • Drive along the Corniche—Alexandria’s scenic waterfront promenade—to the 15th-century Citadel of Qaitbay, a fortress built on the former site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria
  • Climb the towering limestone ramparts of the Citadel and take in panoramic views of the city hugging the shoreline and the harbor dotted with boats
  • Learn about Banlastic, a local nonprofit working to reduce single use plastics in Egypt, and receive a gift made from recycled plastic

Alexandria is the perfect place to delve into Egypt’s history under the Greek and Roman empires with an optional excursion. You can also use your free time this afternoon to return to the Corniche and bask in the sea breeze, stop at a café along the promenade, or find a spot along the waterfront and watch the sun melt over the Mediterranean.

Greco-Roman Alexandria & Lunch

Return to Cairo this morning, then fly to Luxor, known to travelers and historians as “the world’s greatest open-air museum” due to its incredible concentration of ancient Egyptian monuments, temples, and archaeological sites. You may have seen them in books or movies, but prepare to be more than a little starstruck. Excavations and discoveries continue to this day as new findings shed light on the lives of ancient Egyptians.

Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a free evening in the city. For an unforgettable experience, book an optional excursion on the Nile aboard a felucca, a traditional Egyptian sailboat. Want to spend your free night in the city? Luxor’s monuments take on a special life at night via dramatic sound and light shows that immerse you in history.

Please note: On some departures the Nile River Felucca Ride & Dinner excursion will take place on day 8 and the included dinner from day 8 will move to day 7.

Nile River Felucca Ride & Dinner

Enjoy a morning walking tour through Luxor Temple, located on the banks of the Nile River. With your Egyptologist, you’ll see one of the world's highest-quality collections of Egyptian artifacts, including a statue recovered from King Tutankhamun's tomb.

As you approach Luxor Temple, an avenue of human-headed sphinxes creates a dramatic and awe-inspiring entrance. The temple unfolds with a series of striking architectural elements that include massive columns, colossal statues, and hieroglyphs.

Continue sightseeing through Luxor on your own with a free afternoon—consider a side trip to the Mummification Museum—but we highly recommend the optional excursion to the Temple of Hathor. With an exquisitely preserved astronomical ceiling depicting zodiac signs and constellations, it’s an invaluable historical record of Egyptian astronomy. The Temple of Hathor is also your chance to ponder the mystery and intrigue of the “Dendera Light” whose motif depicts the Egyptian creation myth.

Tonight, gather with your fellow travelers for an included dinner with beer or wine.

Please note: On some departures the included dinner will take place on day 7 and the Nile River Felucca Ride & Dinner excursion will take place on day 8.

Dendera & the Temple of Hathor

From $79 per person

Spend the morning relaxing and catching up on sleep or brave an early start for an optional but certainly once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon ride soaring high over the Valley of the Kings and the Nile.

Later, head out to tour the Nile’s West Bank with your Egyptologist.

  • Explore the Valley of the Kings, a series of tombs nestled between rugged limestone and mountains in the Theban Hills, where the barren, rocky terrain contrasts with the lush greenery of the Nile's eastern bank
  • Tour the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, one of the few female pharaohs. Carved directly into the sheer mountain cliffs, the temple stands out with colonnaded terraces connected by gently sloping ramps as well as relief carvings of the queen and her storied accomplishments
  • View the 64-foot-high Colossi of Memnon, circa 1350 BC—a pair of massive stone statues that stand in front of the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III. Very little of the temple remains today, but the twin statues maintain a watchful gaze toward the river
  • Enter King Tut’s tomb, famous for containing the ancient Egyptian treasures a ruler would need in the afterlife, such as clothing, food, chariots, games, and ceremonial items

Board your cruise ship this afternoon and enjoy an included lunch before settling into your cabin. Sit down for an included dinner served with beer or wine aboard the ship this evening as the gentle waves carry you and your fellow travelers down the Nile.

tour cairo

Nile River Hot Air Balloon Ride

From $225 per person

Head off the ship today to explore the painstakingly excavated Temple of Karnak. It’s said that 30 pharaohs presided over the building of the temple—a sprawling and vast ancient site. You’ll feel a palpable connection to the ancient world as you walk in the footsteps of priests and worshippers who came here for thousands of years.

Venture off on a walking tour through the complex to see the Precinct of Amun-Re, whose mudbrick walls stretch over 1.5 miles in circumference. Gaze over extensive hieroglyphic inscriptions marking moments in history, and end at the Temple of Khonsu—a smaller, more intimate temple dedicated to the god of moon and time.

This afternoon, enjoy an included lunch before sailing toward Edfu. Then, sit down for an included dinner served with beer or wine this evening.

Set sail for Edfu and Kom Ombo this morning and disembark your ship for guided tours, with your Egyptologist leading the way, to some of the best-preserved Egyptian temples in the country.

  • Walk through Edfu’s Temple of Horus, a classic example of Ptolemaic architecture, with massive stone walls and towering pylons. It’s also one of the few temples in Egypt where inscriptions on its walls describe how it was built and used in ancient times
  • Enjoy an included lunch aboard your cruise ship
  • Visit the Temple of Kom Ombo, noted for its dedication to two deities, Sobek and Horus, constructed as two symmetrical temples aligned parallel to one another. Although they were initially constructed during the Ptolemaic period, they were expanded after the Roman conquest of Egypt, resulting in a blend of both Egyptian and Greco-Roman architectural styles

Sit down for an included dinner with beer or wine aboard the ship this evening.

Enjoy a free morning on board the ship or add an optional excursion to Abu Simbel to visit the temples of Ramses II and his wife Nefertari, originally carved into the mountainside and painstakingly relocated to save them from being submerged by Lake Nasser.

Please note: Depending on flight schedules, the Abu Simbel optional excursion may be offered on day 13 instead of day 12.

Later, enjoy an included lunch, served with beer or wine, before continuing on to Aswan for a sightseeing tour of the city led by your Egyptologist.

  • Board a boat and visit the temples at Philae, located on an island in the Nile River. Watch in awe as enormous columns and imposing facades rise from the water, emblazoned with hieroglyphics
  • Walk through the colorful local market where you’ll find perfumes, spices, traditional talismans, and souvenirs

After sitting down for an included dinner with beer or wine, enjoy a free evening in Cairo. Ask your Tour Director for a recommendation or find a cozy café on your own for some mint tea and kunafa, a spun pastry soaked in sweet syrup and sprinkled with pistachios.

Spend one last day in Egypt exploring Cairo’s frenetic streets and boisterous culture on your own, or take an optional excursion into the depths of antiquity—Saqqara and Dahshur—where you’ll view the inimitable Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world's oldest complete stone building.

Celebrate your trip with your fellow travelers during tonight’s farewell dinner with beer or wine at a local restaurant.

  • In order to enter Egypt, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
  • U.S. and Canadian passport holders must obtain a visa in order to enter Egypt. U.S. citizens can purchase your visa at the airport upon arrival for $25. The entry authorities require exact change in crisp, new bills. You can also purchase your visa in advance by using a visa provider, such as our partner VisaCentral . Additionally, you can opt to purchase an electronic visa on the Egyptian Electronic Visa Portal website (Please note: Canadian citizens may only obtain a visa directly from the Egyptian Embassy or consulate). Passport control officers at ports of entry can verify your e-visa in their systems. However, we advise keeping either a digital or hard copy of your e-visa in case of any system failures.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code EGG.
  • You will walk for at least 2.5 hours daily across uneven terrain, including cobblestone streets and paved roads, with some hills and stairs.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times, as well as getting in and out of small boats.
  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special, individual mobility assistance to travelers on tour. • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • Your Tour Director, who’s also an Egyptologist, will be with you throughout the duration of your Egypt tour. There will also be additional staff working alongside your Tour Director to confirm logistics, as well as assist with transfers and on-tour flights. Having these staffers, who are solely focused on ensuring all on-tour logistics go smoothly, allows your Tour Director to dedicate even more one-on-one time to teaching your group about Egyptian history and culture. While it’s customary to tip your Tour Director, you don’t need to tip these additional staff members.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in and depart from Cairo. A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights, which may include on-tour flights in addition to your round-trip flights to and from tour. Please note that your included on-tour flights may have more restrictive baggage limits.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage or exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered, as well as a light jacket or rainwear. While many places in Egypt have a warm, sunny climate, the desert can be very cold at night and temperatures will dip with changes in elevation throughout your tour. Therefore, we also recommend packing a few long sleeve shirts and warmer layers to wear at night.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • A sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen is recommended for outdoor activities.

  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour and any possible delays encountered.
  • Certain over-the-counter and prescription medications may be banned in one or all of the countries on this tour. Importing these drugs can carry severe consequences, including imprisonment. Please consult your healthcare provider prior to departure to ensure that any drugs you may want to bring with you are legal in all countries you will visit.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Egyptian cuisine uses the bountiful harvests of the Nile Valley—corn, eggplant, zucchini, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, chickpeas, and citrus fruits are popular in many dishes. Don’t miss out on Egyptian interpretations of typical Mediterranean staples like baba ghanoush, falafel, and stuffed grape leaves. Tea is the national drink and is offered at breakfast, after lunch, and in most social situations.
  • Meal times vary greatly in Egypt and locals often skip lunch. While on tour, breakfast will be served around 8am and lunch is often served around 3pm. Therefore, we recommended bringing energy bars, crackers, or other packable snacks with you during the day.
  • Egypt operates on 220 volts and use Types C or F plugs with two round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.

  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Egypt is 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it's noon in New York City, it's 6pm on tour.
  • You will use the Egyptian pound on tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available abroad, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • You may find it useful to have a supply of U.S. currency in small denominations when bargaining for everything from taxi rides to souvenirs.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director, $1USD per person per day for the bus helper, $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • In Egypt, tipping is an important part of the local culture and you will be expected to tip for services including, but not limited to, taking photos in some areas or seeing additional exhibits. Travelers should carry small bills (in USD) for this purpose.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.
  • As dictated by Egyptian Tourism Police, all foreign groups must be accompanied by an armed guard and/or convoy.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, as pickpockets are active at most tourist sites. We recommend leaving your passport in the hotel safe, and concealing credit cards and cash in a money belt or a hidden pouch.
  • Bring photocopies of your passport, credit cards, and other important documents. Keep them separate from the originals.

A First-Timer's Guide to Cairo

By Stefanie Waldek

Cairo

After almost a decade of political turmoil, visitors are finally returning to Egypt . Hotels are full, boat trips along the Nile require a waitlist to book once again, and the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum promises to draw even more tourists when it opens its doors within the next year or so. I was able to travel to Cairo for nearly a week last November, and while there’s nothing quite like seeing the pyramids in person or listening to the call to prayer at sunset along the Nile , the city can still be overwhelming for a first-time visitor. Here are a few things I wish I’d known before my trip.

Ride the metro

Cairo’s metro system is a pretty well-oiled machine, and it’s easily the cheapest way to get around. Fares start at just three Egyptian pounds (around 17 cents) and increase depending on the distance you’ve traveled to a max of seven pounds (around 40 cents). Considering the city’s notorious traffic, it can often be the fastest way to travel. Just note that you’ll have to submit your bags to an x-ray machine and pass through a metal detector before entering the stations. There are also women-only cars on each train, so pay attention to signage if you’re a female traveler and want to hop on one of them. Side note: The murals in some of the stations are wonderful.

Taxi fares are metered

In many places around the world, you’re expected to haggle flat rates with cab drivers before you get in the taxi in order to secure the best fare and ensure they don’t upcharge you at the end. In Cairo, that’s not the case. Many drivers will happily accept a negotiated flat rate, but you’ll often end up paying more than what the metered fare would come out to be. Clarify with your driver that your ride will be metered before getting in the cab. Additionally, some drivers will double dip into the passenger pool and pick up multiple parties along the way, so if you flag a taxi and the car rolls up with people already inside, you can just wave the driver along. And for what it’s worth, there is Uber in Cairo, and it’s quite affordable.

Cairo Pyramids

The Pyramids, just outside of Giza.

Stay the night in Giza if you want to see the pyramids

While the majority of Cairo’s main tourist sites (the Mosque of Mohammed Ali, the Hanging Church, and the Salahdin Citadel) are in central Cairo, the pyramids are located right on the edge of Giza, which is a 20-minute drive from the center of the city. Throw in some bad traffic, however, and the drive takes 45 minutes to an hour—sometimes even longer. If the pyramids are on your to-do list—and let’s be honest, they’re going to be—stay at a hotel in Giza for a night or two instead of central Cairo so you can maximize your day on the site. The Marriott Mena House , which first opened in 1887, sits right in the shadow of the Great Pyramid and guests can watch the pyramids’ evening light show from their room balcony. When the Grand Egyptian Museum opens in the next year or two, it’ll be located just a few minutes’ drive from the hotel.

The tunnel to the Great Pyramid’s burial chamber is cramped—but worth it

In the past, you had to bribe the guards sitting outside the entrance to let you into the Great Pyramid’s burial chamber. Today, that’s not the case—it’s about $20 for a special entrance ticket, on top of the $9 general admission ticket. (Just make sure you buy your additional ticket at the first entrance gate, as you can’t buy it once you’re inside the site.) As for the tunnel itself, claustrophobes beware: One portion of the tunnel is extremely cramped, so unless you’re under four feet tall, you’ll have to crouch to ascend into the burial chamber. There’s one tunnel for both upward and downward traffic, and it’s only a few feet wide, so get ready to be up close and personal with dozens of strangers. The cramped portion of the tunnel only takes a few minutes to get through, but given the close quarters and how humid the air is, it can feel like an eternity. Don’t expect to snap a selfie: There are absolutely no photographs allowed. (Many tourists ignore the rule, but if a guard catches you they could confiscate your phone or camera.) Lastly, the tunnel actually closes for an hour each day around lunchtime to prevent the buildup of too much moisture from people breathing inside the tunnel.

Be wary of a common scam that takes place at popular attractions

I was caught off guard by a scam outside the Egyptian Museum when a local approached me near the entrance and told me it was closed for an hour for prayer. He suggested my friend and I head to the shops across the street to pass the time, and offered to escort us across the major highway running next to the museum and pointed out some shops. As it turns out, the shop owners work with these locals to bring tourists into their stores, offering them a commission for any purchases. We turned around and headed straight for the museum—which, as it turned out, doesn’t actually close for prayer.

Check the official opening hours before your visit, and if someone approaches you outside the gates claiming the museum is closed, politely excuse yourself. And on that note, some people stand around the entrance saying you need a guide to enter the museum—you don’t. You do, however, need to pay an extra fee to take photos inside.

Khan Al Khalili

Khan Al Khalili is filled with gems.

Give yourself lots of time to explore Khan el-Khalili

Khan el-Khalili, Cairo’s big souk, has more than its fair share of tourist traps, but there are real gems to be found throughout the market, from antique shops to estate sales to workshops that make leather-bound notebooks. The key to finding the best stuff is to let yourself get lost in the maze-like complex for a few hours—a worthwhile activity even if you don’t plan on buying anything. But if you do want to make a purchase, get ready to haggle, cutting the first price you’re offered by at least half, if not more. As for where the locals go? You’ll find them at the food stalls shopping for fresh produce and oven-hot pita. The bazaar is also home to a number of famous cafés, including Faharat, which is known for its pigeon dishes, and El Fishawy, one of Cairo’s oldest, which reportedly opened more than 250 years ago.
