Visas are issued by the Consulate General of Italy in New York only to applicants who are residents of its consular jurisdiction ( States of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey (only the Counties of Bergen, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union, Warren, Essex, Middlesex, Monmouth, Hunterdon, Mercer, Somerset) and Bermuda  

SCHENGEN VISA

The Schengen visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days and allows the visa holder to travel to all of the 27 European Countries that signed the Schengen Agreement namely: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

If you intend to visit one or more Schengen Countries in the course of a single trip, you must apply for a visa at the Consulate of the Country that is your main destination (i.e. where you will stay longer). If you are planning to spend an equal amount of time in different Countries, the visa must be requested at the Consulate of the Schengen Country port of entry (the Country you enter first).

Please note that the border authorities may refuse entry to a foreign national who does not meet all requirements.

What Is A Tourist/Visitor Visa To Italy?

A Schengan visa allows the individual to travel to all 27 countries associated with the Schengen area. Even if you only want to travel to Italy, you’ll still be allowed to go to the other 26 countries for as long as you possess a Schenegen visa.

A Schengen visa is purely for the purpose of tourism and sightseeing and is issued in the form of a sticker on the individual’s passport.

• Evidence of Civil status . This includes your marriage status, birth certificate of your children or death certificate of spouse etc.
• Employer contract
• A signed leave permission slip from the employer
• Income tax return
• Provide a duplicate of your business licence 
• Latest bank statements of the company 
• Enrollment proof
• Proof that the university has no problem with the student travelling.
• Letter of consent from the individuals legal guardians 
• Passport copies of parents/guardians.
• Proof of adoption in case of the individual being adopted.

Entry into the Schengen Area and into the Italian territory of foreigners coming from external borders is permitted only to foreigners who:

• Not hold a B1/B2 visa

If you hold a B1/B2 visa, you are only eligible to apply for an Airport Transit Visa. This must be applied for in your home country.

Step 2: Making an Italian visa appointment

Applications for your Italian Schengen visa can only be made by appointment. You must apply at least 15 days before your planned trip. Any applications received more than 90 days before your trip will not be accepted.

Step 3: Preparing your documents

Once the appointment has been made, it’s time to get all your paperwork ready. With its rich cultural, architectural and culinary history, Italy is a favorite travel destination for people all over the globe. In order to enter Italy legally, visas may be required, depending upon the country from which you hold citizenship. To visit Italy for recreation, you will need determine whether your country of origin requires only a passport or a tourist visa. Some countries, such as the United States, are only required a passport if visiting Italy for less than 90 days. Other countries are issued a standard visa through the Schengen Agreement, which allows European countries within the Schengen borders to travel for leisure or business. To apply for a tourist visa, you will need to contact your local Italian embassy or consulate. The following general guidelines are required for entry to Italy.

• Fill out your name, address, date of birth, marital status, type of travel document (regular, special or diplomatic passport), current occupation and the name of your employer, purpose of travel, duration of your stay in Italy, names of the hosts in Italy, or the hotel where you plan to stay, and proof of sufficient funds while visiting the country.

• Provide a current passport that will be valid for 3 months past the date of departure from Italy. The passport must have a valid photograph and a blank page for attaching the visa.

How To Get an Italy Visa for US Residents

With the arrival of ETIAS slated for 2025, travelers with U.S. citizenship should expect significant changes when entering participating European countries , including Italy. Such changes were initiated in 2016 when the European Commission proposed solutions to improve security in response to a string of terrorist threats and attacks. 

To protect the lives of EU citizens, ETIAS, a pre-screening program for non-EU travelers, was implemented. Not only will this become the primary mechanism for securing EU borders, but it serves as an additional revenue stream.

What Does This Mean for U.S. Citizens Traveling to Italy? 

Currently, U.S. Citizens, as well as travelers from a large number of other non-EU countries, are not required to obtain visas to enter the Schengen Area . This includes all travel of up to 90 days for tourist and business purposes. As long as the traveler’s U.S. Passport is valid for at least three months after their return to the United States , no further arrangements are required. 

Travelers who are U.S. Permanent Residence Card holders (formerly Green Card) may need to apply for a Schengen Visa depending on their country of citizenship. Schengen Visas are handled by individual member countries, you should research your destination country’s requirements. Please use these ETIAS Assessment to determine if you will need a visa.

After ETIAS Implementation

While some U.S. travelers may still require an Italy Visa for tourism, business, transit, family or friends visitation, or medical treatment, most circumstances within these criteria will be covered under the scope of ETIAS. 

There are several types of Schengen Italy Visas, each intended for different travel purposes. Visas offered by the Schengen Territory include tourism, business, transit, family visitation, study, official visit, and cultural, sports, film crew, or religious purposes. Again, however, these are only necessary in certain countries. 

When ETIAS is implemented, many U.S. travelers, such as U.S. citizens , will continue to not need a visa to enter Italy or any other E.U. member country. Nonetheless, there are still several circumstances under which other U.S. travelers will need to obtain a Schengen Visa.

How to Obtain an Italy Schengen Visa

For nationals of certain countries that don’t qualify for ETIAS, Schengen Visas may be required to enter the Schengen Area via air, land, or sea without a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The following list of documents is required for any short-term Italian Schengen visa application:

• Italian visa application form, printed and signed. The information entered on the form must comply with the rest of the documents provided.
• One passport-size picture taken in the last six months, compliant with Italy photograph visa requirements.
• Submit a valid passport along with the rest of the documents. The passport must adhere to the following requirements:
• Not older than ten years.
• Valid for at least three more months after the planned return date from the entire Schengen territory. 
• A residency permit card along with a copy, if the applicant is not a citizen of the country from which they are applying.
• Proof of accommodation, including either:
• A hotel reservation.
• A completed and signed copy of the sponsorship form , including a copy of the passport and Italian residence permit card of the host.
• Proof of travel, such as:
• Round trip ticket, reservation, or flight itinerary.
• Proof of the availability of personal transportation.
• Ferry or train ticket.
• Schengen travel visa insurance, which includes health insurance of a minimum of €30,000 across the entire Schengen Zone.
• Proof of financial ability to stay in Italy. Such proof can include a personal bank statement, credit card, cash, payslips, proof of employment, or documents to prove the sponsor’s willingness to cover expenses. 
• Proof of civil status, such as a birth certificate of children, marriage certificate, death certificate of spouse, etc., no older than six months.
• If requested, you should submit copies of relevant passport pages, a cover letter, and a document checklist. 

Additional Requirements Based on Employment Status

Upon completing and obtaining the above documents, travelers who require a Schengen Visa will also need to complete further documents per their employment status. 

• Employed travelers need a recent reference letter that includes the employment start date, job title, annual salary, and the proposed vacation period. Payslips and a current bank statement for the last three months are also required.
• Self-employed travelers should submit a copy of their business license or certificates of incorporation, a business bank statement of the last three months, and their latest Income Tax Return.
• Students must provide proof of enrollment and a no-objection certificate from their school or university.
• Retired individuals must submit proof that they have received a pension within the last six months.
• Unemployed travelers who are dependent spouses should submit employment information of their spouse, including a letter of employment and payslips, as well as a joint income tax return. You must also provide a marriage certificate if the income tax is not joined.
• Unemployed travelers who are dependent parents should submit employment information of their child and a joint income tax return. You must also submit the child's birth certificate if the income tax is not included.
• Unemployed travelers who are dependent children must submit their parents’ financial information, including bank statements and payslips for the last three months. The parent's income tax return should also be submitted, as well as the travelers’ birth certificate if their name is not on the parents’ tax return.
• Travelers whose income is generated by their property must submit proof of such income.

Additional Requirements for Minors

In addition to the above-listed documents, including financial proof of parental dependency, minors will need to include the following documents in their application:

• Birth certificate as well as a copy upon request.
• Visa application form signed by both parents.
• Both parents signed a letter granting permission to travel and assuming financial responsibility for the minor’s trip.
• Certified copies of the parent's identification.
• A family court order in case only one parent has full custody of the minor.
• If the minor will be traveling with another adult who is not one of the parents:
• Assumption of responsibility of the minor from the adult
• An original copy of the accompanying adult’s passport page includes the holder’s data, expiry date, recent photograph, and a valid visa copy.
• A notarized parental authorization to travel to Italy, signed by both parents or guardians.

How To Submit an Application for a Schengen Visa

You must arrange an appointment with the Italian Embassy, Consulate, or Visa application center to complete the application process. An applicant should follow these steps to apply properly.

• Locate an Italian Embassy, Consulate, or Visa application center.
• Determine which Italian visa type is needed (tourist, business, work, etc.).
• Complete the application form for an Italian short-stay visa.
• Collect the required documents for an Italy visa.
• Make an appointment for a visa interview with the Italian Embassy, Consulate, or visa application center.
• Attend the interview.
• Wait for the processing of your Italian Schengen visa.

Who Needs a Visa?

U.S. Citizens traveling for any reason except tourism, business, transit, family or friend visitation, or medical treatment. Work, Investor, Fiance, Student, and Exchange Visitor Visas may still be required. 

As these visas are handled by individual member countries, you should research your destination country’s requirements. Please use the ETIAS Assessment to determine if you will need a visa.

• U.S. Permanent Residence Card holders (formerly Green Card).
• U.S. Official and Diplomatic passport holders.
• U.S. Visa holders (except B1/B2).

While some U.S. travelers may still require an Italy Visa for tourism, business, transit, family or friends visitation, or medical treatment, most circumstances within these criteria will be covered under the scope of ETIAS. Upon the implementation of ETIAS, travel for work, investment, marriage, study, or long-term training may require a Visa.

When ETIAS is implemented, many U.S. travelers will not need a visa to enter Italy or any other participating country. Nonetheless, there are still several circumstances under which U.S. travelers will need to obtain a visa.

What Will ETIAS Change?

ETIAS will revolutionize how EU countries conduct border security and also provide U.S. travelers with a safe, efficient way to travel throughout Europe. 

This new system is comparable to the USA ESTA , although the cost of ETIAS is cheaper (€7 compared to $21) and is valid for one year longer (three years compared to two). 

Furthermore, ESTA requires visitors to be fingerprinted and photographed at the border. The novel technology utilized by ETIAS provides an online database that negates such practices. 

Not only will ETIAS greatly enhance the safety of EU countries and their citizens, but it will also provide international travelers with a more efficient way to pass through customs.

Italy is offering "digital nomad" visas. Here's how to get one.

Ever dream of working from the picturesque Amalfi Coast?  You might now be able to with a new "digital nomad" visa that Italy is offering foreigners who wish to pack up their laptops and venture abroad.

The Italian government signed the program into law in March 2022, but only opened applications on April 5 — two years later. In doing so, Italy follows dozens of other countries in establishing a program to attract foreign remote workers who want to experience a European lifestyle while keeping their earnings tied to U.S.-based companies. 

Drawing foreigners in can help boost local economies, particularly in smaller Italian towns where populations are dwindling as local residents age. But some experts warn that an influx of people earning U.S. salaries could drive up prices for local residents earning far less.  

The new digital nomad visas are valid for one year, and can be renewed.

Am I eligible?

Applicants must meet a range of criteria in order to be eligible for the visas. For one, a worker must have the ability to do their job remotely, using a laptop or other tech tools. Workers must also be able to provide proof of employment or contract work with a firm based outside of Italy. Both employees of companies and freelance workers are invited to apply. 

Candidates must have either a college-level degree or the equivalent in job experience. Additionally, a worker must be able to demonstrate that they've perviously worked remotely for a period of at least six months. 

There's an income threshold, too, of roughly $30,000 to apply. And, you can't have been convicted of a crime within the past five years. You must also have health insurance, and be able to demonstrate that you have a place to live in Italy.

How do I apply?

Visit your local Italian consulate's website for instructions, which vary by location. While application forms vary by consulate, the Italian consulate in New York has a form on its site that asks for basic information like one's place of birth and passport information.

The application fee is just over $120, according to Italian law firm Studio Legale Metta . 

Within eight days of arrival in Italy, digital nomads must also apply for a residence permit.

Previously Italy had a 90 day rule that meant visitors could only stay for that long without a work visa.

Italy is a land famed for its beautiful vacation destinations , historic architecture, delicious food, enticing wines — and, now, for the opportunities it offers remote workers.

The nation's long-awaited remote worker visa was originally signed into law March 28, 2022, but only came into effect April 4, 2024.

Here's everything you need to know about who can apply for the visa and what it entails.

Who can apply for Italy's digital nomad visa?

Italy's new digital nomad visa is aimed toward what its government describes as a "highly skilled worker" who is a citizen of a non-European Union state, "carrying out a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company even if not resident in Italy."

A "highly skilled worker," in this instance, is defined as a university graduate or one with at least five years of professional work experience.

In addition to fitting the above description, applicants must also fit the following criteria:

• Able to perform their job requirements while working remotely, with at least six months' experience working remotely elsewhere
• Be able to provide evidence that they are either contracted with a company outside of Italy or self-employed
• Earn an annual income of at least 28,000 euros (around $30,000)
• Do not have a criminal record within the last five years
• Have valid health insurance which covers the duration of their time in Italy
• Provide evidence that they have suitable accommodation for the duration of their time in Italy

How can I apply for Italy's digital nomad visa?

To apply for Italy's digital nomad visa, you must arrange an in-person appointment to visit your local diplomatic consular office to submit a declaration signed by your employer. You can find the location of your nearest Italian consular office on ambasciata.net .

You cannot apply for the visa (apart from rare circumstances) if you're already in Italy.

Should you meet the requirements of applying for the visa, the consular agent will then provide you with the relevant forms to make your application and any further considerations. Here is the New York Italian consular office form , to give you an idea of the application process.

You'll also need to provide the following:

• Two passport-size photos with a white background that show a front view of your face
• A copy of a valid passport with an expiration date at least three months after the end of your visa stay
• At least one blank page in your passport
• Payment of the visa application fee, currently 116 euros per person

Once your visa has been approved and you arrive in Italy, you will then have eight days to apply for a residence permit at the police headquarters in the province you're staying in. This residence permit is known as permesso di soggiorno.

How long does it take to get Italy's digital nomad visa?

The first hurdle will be getting your initial consular appointment. Depending on how busy the office is, this could take a couple of months. Timing will likely vary depending on the office you're attempting to visit, though.

Once you've made your appointment and have filled out all of the relevant paperwork, you should hopefully have your visa cleared within 30-90 days.

How long does Italy's digital nomad visa last?

Your visa start date should fall close to the departure date you provided in your initial application, and it will expire 365 days after the start date. Should you need to delay your departure date, you can do so as long as you arrive in Italy before the expiration date.

With millions of workers worldwide now long settled into a hybrid work structure, the digital nomad lifestyle has quickly become an appealing and realistic option for many. Venice launches world first tourist entrance fee in bid to fight overcrowding

VENICE, Italy — Ancient and beautiful, this city is sometimes referred to as an open air museum — and now visitors to Venice will have to pay an entry fee after the tourist hub on Thursday became the first in the world to introduce a charging system for day-trippers.

In a bid to thin out the crowds that throng to see the canals, bridges and striking architecture during vacation season, day-trippers will have to pay 5-euro ($5.35) to enter the lagoon city on 29 peak days, mostly weekends, as part of a trial phase until July 14. 

Tourists who have booked at least one night at a hotel in the city will be exempt from the charge, as will residents, workers and students in the city. Visitors under the age of 14 will also be exempt. But like the day-trippers they will also have to ensure they have registered online and received a QR code.  

Those without smartphones will have to go to the city’s Santa Lucia train station to buy a ticket. 

Among the thousands of people lining up at the station for a ticket Thursday was Donna Porter-Mutchler, a tourist from Tennessee, who told NBC News she thought the charge was “a wonderful idea.”  

“Venice deserves to be taken care of,” said Mutchler. “I think it’s more than worth it. I come here often and I’ll pay every time.” 

While there will be no limits on the number of people who can register, officials are hoping the fee will put people off on days that it applies. 

“We are not looking to collect money, tax people or introduce a police state,” Simone Venturini, Venice’s tourism councilor, told NBC News. “We are being democratic about it, but the important message is: ‘please, if you are a day-tripper, choose another day.’”

While there are no turnstiles at the city’s entrance points to make sure people have a pass, inspectors will be making random checks and issuing fines of between 50 and 300 euros to anyone who has failed to register.

Prominent signs across the city and a TV and newspaper advertising campaign has been launched in Italy and some other countries to let people know about it. And with the help of artificial intelligence , Venice’s Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has also recorded a video message in several languages to inform tourists about the charge.  

Officials in the city estimate an average of about 50,000 people a day visit Venice, an influx which almost matches the resident population of the city, some of whom are unhappy about the new charge.  

“Venice has turned into Disneyland, where tourists are catered more than residents, and charging $5 is not going to stop anyone,” Federica Toninello of the Social Assembly for Housing and the Solidarity Network for Housing in Venice, said Thursday. “It’s just propaganda.”

Others like tourist guide Luisella Romeo, said they were concerned about the use of personal data collected by the new system. “That’s an invasion of privacy. Those details will remain in the system for five years, and could be given to third parties, public and private,” she said. 

But officials in the city, which narrowly escaped being placed on UNESCO’s “World Heritage in Danger” list last year, in part because the United Nations body decided that it was not addressing concerns that its delicate ecosystem risked being overwhelmed by mass tourism, have insisted that something needed to be done. 

Three years ago, large cruise ships were banned from sailing into the Venetian lagoon and the city has also announced limits on the size of tourist groups.

While the charge in Venice is still in its experimental stage, other popular Italian tourism destinations like Lake Como, which has struggled with overcrowding for years, are watching closely.

Only time will tell if it ends up dead in the water.
