Greece Small Ship Cruises vs Big Ships

Cruising is the ultimate way to explore the best of Greece. Imagine Greek Island hopping without the ferry lines and hassle of checking in and out of hotels. Savvy travelers know, there is a huge difference in the type of cruises in Greece.

Big ships are focused inward on the floating resort and amenities. The ship itself is the attraction with waterslides, casinos, Broadway-style shows and midnight buffets. Big ships visit crowded ports at midday and cruise at night.

Small ships are focused outward, on the destination. Cruise up close to shore where the big ships can’t. Visit intimate ports, uninhabited beaches and authentic islands. If you want to get off the ship to explore Greece like a local, then a small ship cruise is for you. Learn more about the difference between small ship cruising and big ships .

Big Ship vs Small Ship Cruise Ports

The Greek Islands consist of 6,000 islands and islets, of which 227 are inhabited.

Most big ships are concentrated on the 10 most popular ports in Greece.  As such there may be as many as 7 ships in a small port each day. The popular ports of Santorini, Mykonos and Crete have their charms, but can be overrun by cruise ship tour groups.

Small ships visit dozens of remote islands, most of which are off limits to big ships. Undiscovered islands such as Paros, Folegandros, Patmos and Serifos reveal the unhurried and authentic Greek culture, history and lifestyle. Actively explore away from port with swimming and paddling at dozens more uninhabited islands. Learn more about the best Greek Islands for small ships .

How to Choose – Greece Cruise Tips

With so many Greek Islands and so many small ships, how to decide which cruise? Our experts have the insight and tips to help you choose. We suggest you consider your itinerary first, then your style of travel, then your ship and finally select your cabin. Let’s review each of these in more detail.

Choosing Your Route – Greece Cruise Itineraries

Probably the most important consideration is your itinerary. Ask yourself these questions. Are there islands that you must see? Are you traveling before or after your cruise? How long do you have for your cruise?

Many people have Santorini, Mykonos and Crete on their bucket list. While these islands are crowded, they do have their charm. And small ships will help you avoid crowds as much as possible. Are these truly on your bucket list or only because they are the ones you have heard of?

Many cruises begin and end in Athens, but some combine Greece with other Mediterranean countries. Cruises may embark or disembark in nearby Croatia, Italy or Turkey. Your overall travel plans may influence your itinerary choice.

Most Greece cruises are 8 days and visit 8-12 islands in a week. Longer itineraries span 10-12 days while the longest cruises are up to 15 days cruising in Greece.

Consider Your Style of Travel

All cruises will make stops at culturally rich towns and historically significant archeological sites. But do you enjoy other off-vessel activities such as snorkeling and kayaking? Are nature hikes part of your travel portfolio? Different cruises offer a variety of different activities and levels of activity.

Choose Your Greece Small Ship

The ship you choose will have a profound impact on your experience and on the price. You’ve already determined you prefer a small ship instead of a mega cruise ship. Next consider the size and amenities of your small ship in Greece.

In general the smallest boats, those carrying 60 guests or fewer, will offer more off vessel activates such as swim stops and kayaking in between the islands. Small ships carrying more than 100 guests will feature larger cabins, more deck space and luxurious accommodations.

Motor sailors are a beautiful way to travel, but keep in mind that winds and routes dictate most sailing vessels will run under motor power most of the time. Cruising with sails up can help stabilize the vessel when seas are choppy.

Do you want the utmost in sophisticated luxury, are you interested in a historic square-rigged sailing yacht or a quaint small cruiser? Ship sizes run from 48-264 guests. Some examples of the most popular small ships in Greece are listed at he bottom of this page.

Our experts are adept at finding the right ship for you. We’ve been aboard and brig our first hand knowledge to help you select and book the perfect Greek Islands small ship.

Greece Small Ship Cruise Cost

Of course, budget is a huge consideration when considering a cruise. Prices vary widely depending on the ship, the cabin, the length of the itinerary and time of year. Small ship cruises in Greece start as low as $1,850 per person and can reach over $18,000 per person. There is a small cruise for every style and budget, let our experts help you find yours.

Small ship cruises sell out early in general. Plan to book 12 months in advance to take advantage of early booking discounts. Boot at least 6-9 months in advance for the best selection of ships, itineraries and cabins. Last-minute cruises are sometimes available but don’t expect any last-minute flash sales.

How to Get to Your Greece Cruise – Embarkation

Most small ship cruises to the Greek Islands begin and end in Athens. Flights to Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (ATH) are available from major airports around the world. The airport is accessible to downtown Athens and cruise embarkation ports by metro, suburban rail and bus. Most small ship cruise travelers will purchase private transfers to their ship or hotel.

Many small ship cruises embark in Piraeus Harbor, the main port of Athens. Some smaller ships and yachts will embark at the nearby Marina Zea. These ports are easily reached by taxi from downtown Athens.

We highly recommend travelers arrive in Athens at least one night prior to your cruise embarkation. Cruises will embark in the afternoon. Many flights from the USA to Athens arrive mid-day. Without an extra overnight you may miss the boat if your flight to Athens is delayed.

Best Time to Cruise the Greek Islands

Small ship cruises operate in Greece each year from April to October. High season is from June through August.

The best time to cruise Greece is in spring, early summer and fall. May, early June and September are particularly nice because prices are lower, and crowds are fewer. August is popular but can be hot and crowded. Learn more about the cruising season region-wide on our detailed page on Mediterranean small ship cruises .

Hear it from Greece Small Ship Cruise Travelers

We had a great time and could not fault anything. Good food, great service by friendly staff. Go by small boat to see more and go to places where big ships can not go.

40 people of different ages, from different parts of the world. We loved the diversity of the people on the ship. Everyone seemed to enjoy everyone. A small ship allowed us to meet and become friends with everyone on the boat. Truly a great experience.

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AdventureSmith.

Ship and staff were top box. We all fell in love with our guide, Georgia.

Please note: The primary ship operating the mentioned itinerary can change from year to year, so the ship this guest cruised on may no longer be sailing this exact route.

We had a great time and could not fault anything. Good food, great service by friendly staff. We enjoyed all the optional excursions. Always wanted to do a trip around the Greek Islands. Ferries were too hard too much packing and unpacking. We never wanted to go on a big ship. Too many people, so Harmony V was perfect. We most enjoyed Santorini and Mykonos...They are the most beautiful.

Accommodations Review

Harmony V was very comfortable. The cabins are great and well looked after by the staff.

Meals Review

The food was very good and the variety excellent. It is a great idea to have a meal ashore each day either lunch or dinner to get an idea of local food, and culture. It was a great experience. We had an the best experience on Mykonos. It was a fun night, very inexpensive and top food.

Crew & Guides Review

Stella was our principle leader. She was terrific, and could not do enough for us. She was always bright and happy and full of information. We were able to leave our luggage on board until about midday when Stella ordered a taxi for us to go to the airport. The other guides on our optional excursions were also very good.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

We certainly would recommend AdventureSmith Explorations to friends and family. We would most likely do another trip with them sometime in the future. The material sent out before we left home explained every thing we need to know.

Traveler Advice

Go by small boat to see more and go to places where big ships can not go.

Featured in this Traveler Review

  • Classical Greece Cruise

They were clean and well maintained.  But this isn’t a Class A boat with 5 star accommodations, so “excellent” doesn’t enter into the description.

Glad we were able to have a lunch or dinner on shore. This allowed us time to truly enjoy each place we visited. Breakfast buffets were very good. Lunch’s good. The “Greek night” dinner was very good, but the 2 others were just average.

Itinerary Review

We loved Folegandros & Paros. Both provided a more laid-back experience. Beautiful places with excellent shopping & restaurants. We loved the adjustment’s the captain made to allow us more time to swim and snorkel. This pleased everyone on the ship. We also loved the diversity of the people on the ship and the fact that everyone enjoyed everyone. The fact that this was a small ship allowed us to meet and become friends with everyone on the boat. Truly a great experience.

[We least enjoyed] Santorini & Mykonos. You can leave these 2 famous places for the large number of cruise ships that frequent the shores. Very crowded and not much fun...though we imagine they might be very nice when not overflowing with people. But we’re equally sure there are a lot more islands in the Cyclades that would be even more enjoyable to visit.

The cruise director, Viki, was very nice and professional. But sometimes our communication wasn’t great. The captain was a very nice man and seemed to go out of his way to accommodate the desires of the guests on his ship. We’d rate him as excellent and would definitely sail with him again. Local guides: we only did 1 on-shore guided tour on Santorini. We didn’t enjoy it, so chose to not do any others. Other fellow travelers felt the same, although those that did choose to do the guided tour of the heritage site of Delo’s found it very interesting and informative.

All information was great. The only item we weren’t expecting was the high temps (mid 90’s) of August. This was a last minute trip for us. We feel fortunate that everything worked as planned.

If possible, avoid traveling to this area in August. Very crowded and hot...We learned that August is not the time to do this trip. Way to many cruise ships. Way too hot this time of year (mid 90’s with high humidity). These 2 items did affect the overall enjoyment of the trip.

  • Jewels of the Cyclades

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AS. The trip included 5 days in Athens, Greece and a week aboard the Sea Cloud through Lindblad. We found Lindblad a little rigid to work with during the planning stages.  In Greece, they were outstanding. The Sea Cloud is a gorgeous sailing barque. The crew, both Lindblad and Sea Cloud, were warm, gracious and a delight to sail with. My wife had always wanted to visit Greece. I love sailing. The combination got us.

I think Santorini was a top destination. It's a beautiful island that I would stay on. The smaller islands were interesting as well.

Room was, as expected, tight quarters. It's an old ship, after all. The public areas are great. The upper deck is a beautiful place for cocktails, or just relaxing. Seeing the Sea Cloud under sail is a real treat.

Food was excellent. I think I probably gained weight, but that's my fault. I preferred the buffet dinners to the served ones. Variety was excellent. Lot's of great salads. Good seafood and fresh fish.

All of the people leading the expedition are true professionals. They know their stuff. One of the regular speakers has her PHD in archeology and is a real expert on the region and Greek history.  I was really impressed with all of them. The two regular guides are Greek and have many years experience in the areas we visited. One of our Lindblad guides, a native Greek, was much too insistent on trying to tell us all about the Greek Orthodox religion. As a non-Christian, I found it a little off-putting. She knew her stuff, but seemed anxious to proselytize...

Between AdventureSmith and Lindblad, we were well prepared. We made our own flight arrangements, but AS was very helpful. I cannot say enough good about our experience both with AdventureSmith and with Lindblad.

  • Sailing the Greek Isles Aboard Sea Cloud
  • Sea Cloud: Lindblad

Everything about the room like the shower/water pressure, comfy bed, cabin attendants was top box.

Tough to say given my lack of knowledge of food service on a ship. I felt the quality of the main courses could have been better. The salads and appetizer bar was better. Leftovers usually were somewhere in the following day’s meal and really wasn’t great.

[We most enjoyed]...Crete, Hydra, Mykonos. Liked the archaeology and ancient architecture and myths. Santorini was a bit of a disappointment. Just too crowded and crazy. It certainly was beautiful and I liked the geology of the island.

Georgia was excellent. She was almost over responsive to guests doing more than required to satisfy their needs. I don’t think you could do better with a trip leader. I guess my wife shared at introduction time we were there celebrating our 60th anniversary. At one of the dinners we were recognized for this with a very nice cake that was shared with others. Nice touch.

Fellow Passengers Review

We had the luck to meet and be with Sarah - a ninth time Variety line veteran who just happened to live on Crete. We got a wealth of information from her

Already have shared our positive experience with another couple.

Why Should I Choose A Small Ship Cruise

Small ship cruises in Greece offer a more intimate and personalised travel experience compared to large cruise ships. Some of the benefits of small ship cruises include:

1.      Flexibility: Small ship cruises can access ports and locations that larger ships cannot, giving passengers the opportunity to visit unique and remote destinations not possible on larger vessels.

2.      Personalised experience: With fewer passengers, small ship cruises offer a more personalised experience. The crew can provide individual attention to each guest, and the itinerary can be customised to suit the group's preferences.

3.      Privacy: Small ship cruises allow for a more private and intimate experience. Passengers can enjoy the ship's amenities without the crowds and queues that are common on larger ships.

4.      Cultural immersion: Small ship cruises often offer opportunities to learn about the local culture and traditions of the destinations visited. This can include onboard lectures, local guides, and authentic cultural experiences.

5.      Eco-friendly: Small ships have a smaller environmental footprint than larger cruise ships. They consume less fuel and produce fewer emissions, making them a more sustainable choice for travellers who are concerned about their impact on the environment.

Our small ship cruises provide a unique and immersive island hopping experience that is well-suited for travellers who value intimacy, flexibility, and cultural immersion. Diamond Star Experience have a fabulous collection of Greek Island cruises with luxury small ship and Gulet cruises ideal for greek island hopping holidays.

Small Ship Cruises for a Magical Greek Islands Journey

Luxury small-ship cruises in the Greek islands offer unparalleled indulgence and adventure. Imagine gliding through the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea on a superyacht or tall ship, with lush olive groves and sun-soaked beaches in the background, and gentle sea breezes cooling your face. Arriving at a small, secluded port, you can explore the Greek islands without the crowds of larger cruise ships.

Step aboard a sleek, elegant superyacht or tall ship where the crew greets you by name and knows your preferences. Travelers rave about the personalized service, access to off-the-beaten-track locations, and the exclusive opportunity to explore hidden gems. Enjoy the adventure of exploring charming villages, tasting local cuisine at cozy tavernas, and swimming in serene, hidden coves.

From the ancient sites of Rhodes, Crete, Kos, and Delos to the vibrant energy of Corfu, Mykonos, and Santorini, luxury small-ship cruises offer the best way to experience the diverse beauty of the Greek islands.

Planning a Greek island-hopping cruise? This guide covers the best luxury cruises on ships with fewer than 400 passengers, ensuring a memorable experience in the Mediterranean.

The Intimacy and Luxury of Small-Ship Greek Island Cruises

Enjoy a more intimate experience cruising the Greek Islands on a luxury small cruise ship. Gone are the long lines at buffets, the wait to disembark, and the scramble for shore excursions. Instead, you’ll enjoy gourmet dining, personal service, and attention to detail that larger ships can’t provide.

Most small cruise ships in the Mediterranean offer a private yacht experience, allowing you to escape the commotion of massive cruise ships. Small ships dock at smaller ports, giving you immediate access to quaint villages, picturesque harbors, ancient cities, and secluded beaches. While others are lining up and jostling for space, you are already exploring charming cobblestone streets and local markets at your own pace.

The most luxurious small ships on Greek island cruises accommodate between 50 and 400 guests. It’s like the difference between staying in a posh boutique hotel and an overly commercialized resort. Many passengers on small cruises say they would never book a cruise on a large, mega cruise ship again.

The Best Time to Cruise the Greek Islands

I’ve found that the best times to book a Greek islands cruise are the shoulder seasons—from April to June and September to October. In my experience, during these months, you’ll experience pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and cheaper cruise prices. The low season is favored by many travelers looking for the most affordable prices.

  • Greece is extremely hot and sunny, good news, in the summer and still sunny in the cooler months making suncream and good coverage of hats and clothing a must. There are also some mosquitos, not so many on the islands themselves thankfully but it is worth bringing a repellent to avoid any bites.
  • The water in Greece is said to often look so clear your boat seems to be floating so it should come as no surprise that snorkelling is a big hit here. Beautiful geological formations, bubbling volcanic seabeds and shoals of fish make it worth bringing your own mask and fins if you enjoy snorkelling and swimming.
  • Greece is part of the E.U. and uses Euros as its currency, banks are easily found on the islands and cards are widely accepted. Tipping is widely accepted as customary for good service. It is interesting to note that due to local regulations your bill for food or drinks must always be left displayed on your table as proof that you have been legally charged.

Explore all the Greek archipelagos have to offer, take in the Cyclades Islands, the Ionian, and the beautiful Dodecanese archipelago. Whether you want to see the wonders of Greek history, tan on the beach, or party until the morning, you'll find a host of wonders in Greece.

Greece Small Ship Cruise FAQ: Your Guide to the Islands

Which greek islands should i visit on my small ship cruise.

Greece boasts a multitude of stunning islands, each with its own unique allure. The Cyclades, known for their whitewashed villages and azure waters, are home to iconic destinations like Santorini, Mykonos, and Naxos. The Ionian Islands offer lush landscapes, Venetian architecture, and vibrant cultural scenes in places like Corfu, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos. The Dodecanese islands, with their rich history and diverse landscapes, include Rhodes, Kos, and Patmos. Crete, the largest Greek island, is a world unto itself, boasting ancient ruins, rugged mountains, and beautiful beaches.

How can I make the most of my time on these islands during my Greek cruise?

Choosing the right type of cruise can greatly enhance your experience in Greece. Smaller ships provide a more intimate and immersive journey compared to large cruise ships. They can access hidden coves, secluded beaches, and charming harbors that are inaccessible to the bigger ships. Imagine anchoring in a tranquil bay, surrounded by crystal-clear waters, with only a handful of fellow travelers to share the moment. This intimate setting allows you to connect more deeply with the local culture, savor authentic Greek cuisine at family-run tavernas, and explore hidden gems away from the crowds.

What are the must-see attractions in each island group?

  • Santorini: The caldera cliffs, volcanic beaches, Oia sunset
  • Mykonos: Windmills, Little Venice, Paradise Beach
  • Naxos: Portara (Temple of Apollo), traditional villages, Mount Zas
  • Corfu: Old Town, Achilleion Palace, Paleokastritsa beaches
  • Kefalonia: Melissani Cave, Myrtos Beach, Assos village
  • Zakynthos: Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, Blue Caves
  • Rhodes: Medieval Old Town, Lindos Acropolis, Valley of the Butterflies
  • Kos: Asklepion (ancient healing center), Hippocrates Plane Tree, beaches
  • Patmos: Cave of the Apocalypse, Monastery of St. John the Theologian
  • Knossos Palace, Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Samaria Gorge
  • Balos Lagoon, Elafonisi Beach, Chania Old Town

How can I experience the local culture and cuisine?

Smaller cruises often offer unique shore excursions tailored to immerse you in the local way of life. You might join a traditional Greek cooking class, visit a local olive oil producer, or explore a secluded village where time seems to stand still. These intimate encounters allow you to forge connections with local artisans, farmers, and fishermen, gaining a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of Greek culture.

Of course, no visit to Greece is complete without indulging in its world-renowned cuisine. Smaller ships often pride themselves on sourcing fresh, local ingredients and offering menus that showcase the authentic flavors of each region. From succulent grilled seafood to flavorful moussaka and tangy tzatziki, every meal is a culinary adventure.

12 Top Cruises on Small Ships

From wildlife viewing in the remote polar regions to magical sunsets in the Indian Ocean, these ships offer unforgettable voyages.

Even if you're sailing in chilly Antarctica, cruising on a small ship offers comfort and coziness.

If you are feeling a sense of wanderlust and ready to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations in far-flung corners of the world, consider booking a small ship cruise. These luxury mega-yachts, expedition-style vessels and sailing ships can visit tucked-away harbors, exotic locales and pristine beaches that larger ships can't reach. And if you opt for a cruise on a rigged sailing vessel, there's nothing more romantic than watching the sun set into the ocean while the wind fills the sails of a tall ship at sea.

Smaller ships offer an intimate onboard vibe where the experience is highly personalized with a higher crew to passenger ratio – and where you'll get to know many of your fellow passengers. Smaller ships are often more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly than traditional cruise ships, using either wind power or the latest technologies. With the addition of new or existing cruise lines entering this market along with other lines investing in upgrading older ships, there are many more vessels in these smaller ship classes to choose from when considering your cruise options.

If you're seeking an adventure of a lifetime – whether to meet the penguins in Antarctica, people- and yacht watch in glamorous ports of call in the Mediterranean, or go island hopping in paradise in Hawaii – then plan your voyage to set sail on one of these small ships.

Star Clippers: Royal Clipper

Inspired by the legendary 1902 Preussen, the first five-masted ship, Royal Clipper was launched in 2000 as a true sailing vessel at 439 feet in length with 54,000 square feet of sails across 42 sails. With five fully rigged masts, the ship is recognized in Guinness World Records as the largest square rigger in service today.

Modeled after the historic clipper ships, Royal Clipper travels under full sail – and by wind power – for up to 80% of its voyages. When the vessel does navigate under power, the energy-efficient engines only use high-quality, low-sulfur gas oil, earning Star Clippers the International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate for all three of its clipper ships.

The ship can accommodate as many as 227 passengers in 114 staterooms, along with 106 crew. While on board, guests will enjoy 19,000 square feet of open teak deck, three swimming pools and hidden balconies on either side of the bow, where you can view wildlife like dolphins swimming alongside the ship. You can also relax in the bowsprit net overlooking the ocean and keeping an eye out for whales. For the more adventurous sailor, climbing the mast to 75 feet above the water affords unforgettable ocean views from your perch in one of the passenger crow's nests. Other features of Royal Clipper are its three-story atrium, trilevel dining room, and unique spa and health club with underwater portholes called the Captain Nemo Lounge.

The ship's seven-night Windward Islands itinerary sails round trip from Barbados with stops in Antigua , Martinique , St. Kitts, Îles Des Saintes and St. Lucia. You'll even have an opportunity to sail alongside one of the line's sister ships and another tall ship – Star Flyer – to the island of Dominica . Royal Clipper's longer itineraries include several Grand Voyages: The 19-night cruise from Cannes in France to Lisbon in Portugal, for example, calls on other ports in France, Italy, Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco.

Silversea Cruises: Silver Wind

Launched in 1995, Silver Wind was Silversea's second of four vessels that the line built for the ultra-luxury market. This ship underwent a significant upgrade in 2018, followed by another refurbishment in 2021 that included an enhanced ice-class hull. This new addition allows Silver Wind to be one of the most adaptable ships in the fleet, sailing from the polar regions like Antarctica to sunny island climates in the Caribbean and cruising picturesque shorelines along the Mediterranean Sea.

Silver Wind measures about 515 feet in length and has 149 all ocean-view suites, more than 80% of which boast a private veranda. The ship carries 274 guests and 239 crew and features elegant public rooms, including lounges for gazing out at the ocean or watching onboard entertainment. There's also an upscale bar, shipboard boutiques and a spa.

Dining is a highlight, with four venues spanning international cuisine such as Italian, regional specialties and seasonally inspired menus. For an evening under the stars, The Grill features fine steaks and seafood or vegetables that guests can cook at the table on 400 degrees Celsius lava stones. After dinner, spend time chatting with fellow passengers at Connoisseur's Corner, where you can sip cognac and enjoy a cigar.

Silver Wind offers an epic 20-night expedition cruise from Tromsø, Norway, to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, visiting various destinations in Iceland as well as remote regions and glaciers in Greenland. For a warmer voyage, the 10-night Puntarenas to Guayaquil itinerary takes you from Costa Rica to Ecuador in South America, with stops at the remote Darien Jungle in Panama, the Utría National Natural Park in Colombia and several ports in Ecuador, including the city of Guayaquil.

Sea Cloud Cruises: Sea Cloud

Exterior of Sea Cloud ship on the water.

Courtesy of Sea Cloud Cruises

Built in 1931 as a private yacht for Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post, an American socialite and philanthropist, this legendary windjammer maintains the elegance of a time gone by.

Originally named Hussar, the 360-foot Sea Cloud has a fascinating history – while the ship started as a private yacht, it later became a floating palace of diplomacy and then a warship. Today, Sea Cloud accommodates up to 64 passengers in 32 outside cabins and carries about 60 crew. The ship also boasts 29 sails, with the height of the main mast towering 184 feet above the water.

If you've never been on this type of vessel, cruising under full sail on a tall ship is unlike any other experience. Sea Cloud does not rely on motors (though they are installed just in case), allowing the wind and sea to determine the ship's course whenever possible, guided by the skills and seamanship of the crew for navigation. This setup provides an opportunity to teach the art of sailing to the passengers. The captain of Sea Cloud and guests prefer to cruise under full sail, which is the lure of sailing on a windjammer. Life on board the ship is intimate and relaxed – just as you would find on a private yacht.

Amenities on Sea Cloud include a lido bar and deck and a restaurant serving cuisine inspired by the destination, which features local products, fresh fish and regional wines.

One of Sea Cloud's top itineraries, Between Lifestyles and Nature's Paradises, sails for seven nights from Monte Carlo, Monaco , to the Spanish island of Palma de Mallorca , with calls on less visited ports along the Mediterranean coast in southern France like La Ciotat and Collioure. You can also join the jet-setters in St. Barts with a front-row seat from your sailing ship for the Bucket Regatta. This 10-night adventure includes two days in the French West Indies island of St. Barts and other picturesque ports of call in the Caribbean.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' first luxury expedition ship, World Navigator, launched in August 2021. With a length of 423 feet and capacity for 196 passengers and 127 crew, the ship sails to fascinating destinations around the world. By optimizing fuel efficiency with the incorporation of the latest hybrid power management and propulsion system, World Navigator uses as little as one-fifth of the fuel of standard cruise ship systems. The quiet alternate hydro-jet propulsion system allows for up-close viewing of marine animals and other wildlife.

The 98 beautifully appointed staterooms and suites feature upscale amenities like Egyptian linens and a menu to personalize your selection of a pillow. Some accommodations also have Juliet-style or walk-out balconies, and certain suites come with butler service. For dining options, you'll find Portuguese-inspired Porto, which is the main dining room, or the New York-style 7-Aft Grill for steaks and seafood. Passengers can also opt to have lunch poolside or enjoy light bites at the Dome Observation Lounge, which offers panoramic views of the sea.

Other ship amenities include three bars and lounges, the SeaSpa by L'Occitane, an auditorium, a mud room, a pool and two hot tubs, a boutique and a fitness center. To wind down after a day of exploring destinations in far corners of the globe, convene with other passengers to relive the experience during Àpres Sea.

For the ultimate bucket list adventure, book the nine-night round-trip expedition from Ushuaia, Argentina, to the southernmost continent. Highlights of this venture to Antarctica include navigating the Drake Passage; embarking on water safaris to Deception Island or Yankee Harbour; encountering wildlife like penguins, seals and whales; and even camping on land overnight. For a less adventurous itinerary, history enthusiasts will appreciate the 12-night Western Europe voyage sailing from Hamburg in Germany to London , with an overnight in Amsterdam and ports of call in cities like Antwerp and Bruges , Belgium; Plymouth, U.K.; and Honfleur, France.

Windstar Cruises: Wind Star

Dining at the Star Grill on the Wind Star.

Michel Verdure | Courtesy of Windstar Cruises

When it first launched in Le Havre, France, in November 1985, Wind Star was the world's largest sailing vessel and the flagship for the line. While this schooner may not be the largest tall ship on the seas today, Wind Star is an elegant four-masted sailing yacht and the cruise line's namesake. Since its launch, this ship has been through a few renovations, with the most recent one in 2018. The 360-foot vessel features 73 deluxe ocean-view staterooms that accommodate 148 passengers, and it can carry 101 crew. Four masts stand at 204 feet tall, and six triangular Dacron sails, which are self-furling and computerized, make up a surface area of 21,500 square feet.

As with other Windstar vessels, you'll find the same casual elegance on board this sailing ship. Guests will get to sail away to the music Windstar traditionally plays while raising the flag during every port departure – Vangelis' song "1492: Conquest of Paradise," which is the musical score to the movie of the same name. The culinary program on Windstar's fleet is in partnership with the James Beard Foundation, so dining is a real treat. The three restaurant venues on Wind Star include Amphora, whose contemporary, international menu was created by James Beard-affiliated chefs. The romantic Candles offers an alfresco dining experience with grilled steaks and skewers, while the Veranda is the ship's casual breakfast and lunch buffet with outdoor seating.

Other onboard amenities include a lounge, the Yacht Club Café, a pool bar, a salon and spa, a boutique, a library, a fitness center, a water sports platform and an open bridge where you can enjoy a chat over coffee with the captain.

Treasures of the Greek Isles is a seven-night voyage that sails round trip from Athens to several Greek islands, including Mykonos and Santorini . This itinerary also includes a stop in Kusadasi, Turkey, where you'll be able to visit the fascinating ancient city of Ephesus. For a South America adventure to transit the Panama Canal and explore destinations in the region like rainforests, reserve the seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal voyage.

National Geographic Endurance is 407 feet in length and has 69 spacious staterooms with large windows or balconies to accommodate up to 126 passengers. The ship also carries 112 crew. Unique onboard amenities include the first polar art exhibit at sea, curated by environmental artist Zaria Forman, and the first igloos at sea. Guests can arrange to spend an evening under the stars in these glass domes, which are available to reserve on a first-come, first-served basis.

Passengers can also enjoy one complimentary evening at the Chef's Table, sustainable cuisine during their voyage, a lounge and bar area, outdoor infinity-style hot tubs, a yoga studio, saunas with a view of the sea, and state-of-the-art facilities for presentations and films. Every expedition also has a National Geographic photographer and a certified photo instructor and video chronicler.

For an unforgettable rendezvous with nature, book a 10-night cruise called Land of the Ice Bears. This adventure sails to the best place in the world to view polar bears: the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. In addition to many opportunities to see those amazing animals, you'll also encounter walruses, reindeer, arctic foxes and fur seals. Another incredible journey for the extreme adventurer is the 35-day Epic Antarctica sailing. This expedition will venture to remote West Antarctica and explore the sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand and Australia, traveling to destinations where possibly few – or even no – humans have set foot before.

UnCruise Adventures: Safari Explorer

Built in 1998, Safari Explorer is 145 feet in length and one of UnCruise Adventures' four Safari-class ships in its expedition-style fleet. Nicknamed "the Bulldog," this ship transports passengers to wild and remote areas that larger ships can't navigate. The 36-passenger yacht was recently renovated with interior refinishes, touch-ups and upgrades. There are just 18 cabins and 18 crew.

The lifestyle is casual on board, and guests have access to three decks with a library, dining room, rooftop sun lounge and exercise equipment. You'll find common areas on the main deck such as the salon, bar and wine bar. When it's time to hit the water or go ashore, the vessel is equipped with expedition gear, including kayaks, inflatable skiffs, paddleboards, snorkel equipment and more.

In the summer months, Safari Explorer sets off in search of humpback whales in Alaska and spends winters island hopping in Hawaii. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes sailing cruises to four islands, including stops in Molokai, Lanai , Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii . There are two itineraries in Alaska. The seven-night Alaska Glacier Cruise itinerary sails one way from Juneau to Sitka through the northern passages. For an extended expedition that includes wilderness areas with even more opportunities for wildlife and whale viewing, book the 12-night Cruise to Alaska voyage from Seattle to Juneau.

Ponant: Le Commandant Charcot

Ponant's first high polar expedition vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, launched in September 2021. The 492-foot-long ship is eco-friendly and powered by liquefied natural gas with the latest innovations and technologies. Le Commandant Charcot is also the first luxury hybrid electric polar exploration vessel.

All of the 123 staterooms and suites have a private balcony or terrace. The atmosphere for the 245 passengers on board is much like that of a private yacht, given an extraordinary ratio of passengers to crew with 215 crew members. Two culinary options, gastronomic restaurant Nuna and casual dining concept Sila, are part of a collaboration with Ducasse Conseil and Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse; the menus are designed by the renowned French chef. Guests can enjoy complimentary French wine, Veuve Clicquot Champagne and Ladurée macarons throughout their voyage.

You'll also find beautiful public spaces, a boutique, a theater, expedition rooms and a promenade deck where you can access the bow. Not to be missed is the wellness area, which is a partnership with Biologique Recherche and features amenities like a 14 degrees Fahrenheit snow room with fresh powder snow, a sauna and an indoor pool. On the pool deck, passengers can enjoy a sunroom, a heated outdoor blue lagoon, a giant fire pit, an outdoor bar and the Blue Lagoon bar.

Le Commandant Charcot sails to the farthest points in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, including Antarctica and the North Pole. The 24-night Northwest Passage cruise takes guests from Reykjavik in Iceland to Nome, Alaska, and features polar activities like kayaking between the ice floes, snowshoeing, ice fishing or even exploring with a naturalist guide by hovercraft. The 15-night Geographic North Pole expedition sailing from Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, in Norway pushes the limit of sailing to the northernmost point in the world. Le Commandant Charcot is the only passenger ship able to reach the geographic North Pole.

Australian-owned Greg Mortimer is a 341-foot-long purpose-built expedition ship, and the first passenger ship designed with the Ulstein X-Bow. This state-of-the-art design offers environmental benefits such as producing fewer emissions and requiring less fuel. The unique bow design also provides a smoother cruise experience when crossing rough seas like the Drake Passage en route to Antarctica. In addition, the ship's Rolls Royce dynamic stabilizers contribute to the vessel's stability and lower its fuel consumption.

The vessel was built in 2019, features 79 cabins with ocean views – 85% of which have balconies – and can accommodate an average of 132 passengers and 74 crew. Onboard amenities include bars and lounges, the main dining room, lecture facilities, a library, a mudroom to store wet expedition gear, a spa, a sauna and a gym. The ship also has hydraulic viewing platforms offering unobstructed views of the local marine and wildlife, as well as 15 Zodiac boats that launch from four platforms.

With Greg Mortimer and its new sister ship, Sylvia Earle, Aurora Expeditions travels to wild and remote destinations around the world. Popular itineraries include its nine- to 23-day Antarctica voyages, navigating icy waters on the 17-day Northwest Passage expedition from Canada or on the 11-day Iceland Circumnavigation cruise, which sails round trip from Reykjavik.

The Top 10 Galapagos Small Ship Cruises

small island boat trips

The best way to experience the Galapagos Islands is aboard a small-ship cruise.

With the many cruises for the Galapagos, it can be difficult to choose a vessel for your experience. The larger vessels that accommodate 50 to 100 visitors can seem crowded and lack the personal touch of smaller vessels.

A small-ship cruise keeps the experience intimate and provides a more personal tour of this incredible region.

The following tours are our selection of small ship Galapagos Cruises defined as accommodating 20 people or less. These include luxury-class, first-class and adventure-class ships to suit a diversity of preferences.

5-Star Reviews!

5 star review

From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless.

Our experience has been nothing short of exceptional.

From the moment of initial contact with Captain Yiannis, everything was seamless. This company and the entire team could not have been more helpful! We live in the USA and never had a problem with communication. The Catamaran we selected was the Lagoon 450F. It was beautiful, spacious, clean, and easy to live on for a week as we sailed to beautiful beaches.

The Ionian Islands we visited were breathtaking, especially Kefalonia – it was our favorite! Above all, the feeling of safety that Captain George ensured throughout our trip made our journey even more memorable. We can’t wait to experience it again.

So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable sailing experience around the Greek Islands with a professional company and a knowledgeable and friendly guide, look no further!

Great knowledge of the area and its history.

Excellent week of sailing in the Greek Islands with Yiannis. He has great knowledge of the area and its history. He showed us unique beaches and key sites on the islands. A memorable week of adventure, drama, and weather. A great first visit to the country of Greece and its islands. Recommend Yiannis as a skipper and guide for your trip.

The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering.

We made it back safely and happily to Paros today. Yianni showed us secluded beaches, surprising chortas and agreed to take us to santorini even though he hates sailing there! The kids enjoyed jumping off the boat and even steering it on occasion. It’s a beautiful part of the world and we’d definitely recommend exploring it.

Christine August 22, 2021

Yannis is a superb captain

First and foremost, Yannis is a superb captain. He is a true professional and puts the comfort and safety of the guests first. We had a superb week and thanks to the knowledge of Yannis we visited hidden beaches and places that were sublime. Yannis is passionate about sailing, and we all improved our sailing skills and learned about sailing this magical part of the world.

We cannot wait to return and know that Captain Yannis is our go-to Greek master of the seas.”

The best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.

My friends and I had a terrific sailing trip with Cpt. Yiannis. We sailed islands from Athens to Milos for a week. [...] Captain Yiannis was not only an outstanding skipper, but he also is a very knowledgeable tour guide. [...] Also, he had tremendous knowledge of any island we stopped on the way and recommended the best tavernas for dining and the most interesting places to visit.

The captain was very professional and sailed extremely safe and responsible. Great guy, a great captain, thank you, Captain Yiannis!

Remis – Boston, USA June 26, 2021

Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht

We had a wonderful week of sailing in the Saronic Gulf end of August. Yannis gave us the ideal family yacht for this bareboat charter trip . Together with the charter company we felt us in very good hands, for all questions we had. Except in this year 2020, with these special conditions!

Thanks Yiannis.

Most of our cruises depart from Oban, gateway to the Highlands and the Islands of the Outer and Inner Hebrides – sailing in these waters is the best way to explore the islands and the beautiful coastline of Scotland. Our five small cruise ships are beautiful floating hotels and have been designed to access remote and sheltered anchorages that larger boats find inaccessible. Sailing from April to October we make the most of the longer summer days with opportunities for walking ashore and wildlife spotting or just relaxing onboard. You can find out more about where we go on our Cruising Area.

The Scottish Small Ship Cruising Holiday

Our four small cruise ships offer you a truly unique experience, a Scottish holiday with a difference. Our converted fishing trawlers, Glen Massan and Glen Tarsan , provide accommodation for up to 11 guests, whilst our purpose-built vessels, Glen Etive and Glen Shiel , can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests. Each of those boats has a crew of four onboard; Skipper, Chef, Engineer and Steward.

Our crews provide the very best in Scottish Hospitality and do their best to ensure your cruise runs smoothly. Meals are freshly prepared on board utilizing the wonderful Scottish Larder with our Chefs focusing on locally sourced seasonal produce – seafood is of course a highlight for many on our cruises with mussels from Loch Spelve, langoustine and occasionally a lobster caught in the creels that we keep on board.

The Majestic Line offers a choice of 17 different cruise itineraries from 3 nights , 6 nights or 10 nights . We cruise waters surrounding some of Scotland's iconic islands such as Islay, Jura, Mull, Skye, St Kilda, Staffa and Iona, the small isles of Rum, Muck and Eigg. You can go ashore to enjoy the fantastic scenery, take a walk, visit one of the malt whisky distilleries or gin distilleries, watch the local wildlife. We also operate a river cruise through the Caledonian Canal and Neptune’s Staircase to Loch Ness and sail to Inverness. Discover our Cruises .

The seas off the West Coast of Scotland provide an incredible habitat for all sorts of marine wildlife and our guests regularly see dolphins, porpoises, seals, basking sharks, minke whales, orca, not to mention the amazing sea birds from puffins and petrels to gannets and guillemots. Find out more about the species we regularly see at Wildlife of the West Coast of Scotland and Hebrides .

If you are looking to discover the West Coast of Scotland and the Hebrides in a relaxing and enjoyable way with good company and excellent food then a Majestic Line cruise is the perfect Scottish holiday for you. Discover your Scottish cruising holiday here .

9 Small Ship Scottish Cruises You Should Know About

By Ted Scull & Robin McKelvie

Scotland is one of the world’s top small-ship cruise destinations. The exceedingly scenic isles off Scotland’s west coast are an ideal backdrop for intimate small-ship cruising.

Over the past few years, our Scottish Reporter Robin McKelvie sampled a bunch of small-ship Scottish cruises and we’re delighted to share his reviews on QuirkyCruise …

  • Argyll Cruising: Aboard the Splendour Sail the Hebrides or the Firth of Clyde , or both, for world class cruising with remarkable scenery, seafood and wildlife.
  • Hebridean Island Cruises: Hebridean Princess Returns to Scotland For serious luxury, one of the world’s finest small ship experiences sees you caressed through the Scottish isles.
  • Le Boat: Self-Drive Cruising on the Beautiful Caledonian Canal For do-it-yourselfers, drive a Le Boat rental with your family or friends.
  • Majestic Line: Cruising on the Glen Shiel Glen Shiel is the flagship of this superb independent four-ship cruise line; a brilliant way to explore the Hebrides.
  • Red Moon Cruises: Red Moon Rising Seriously intimate four-person vessel where you get a major say in the route taken.
  • Skarv Lines: Nova Spero Cruises the Scottish East Coast Rugged fishing boat conversion that innovates with some more unusual routes — like the east coast — alongside the perennially popular Hebrides.
  • Spirit of Scotland: Barge Cruising on the Caledonian Canal Proper luxury along the deeply historic Caledonian Canal with no danger of seasickness.
  • Skye and the Isles Cruises: Sailing Fleur de Lys Straight out of Mallaig This newcomer gets straight into the isles as it sails from Mallaig, avoiding the long sail from Oban to Ardnamrchan.
  • Hebrides Cruises: The Hebrides by Hot Tub on the Emma Jane The luxurious 10-passenger Emma Jane sports a large owner’s suite and an outdoor hot tub!

Robin McKelvie is a Scottish Small-Ship Cruise Expert

QuirkyCruise contributing writer Robin McKelvie knows Scottish cruising like no other.

“The small-ship cruises I’ve sampled over the past few years are the most intimate and rewarding way to cruise what for me are the most spectacular cruising waters in the world,” Robin says, adding …

“Each vessel has its own individual character, but all are a sheer joy, from tiny converted fishing boats like what Argyll Cruising offers, through to the relatively large Hebridean Princess , a brilliantly converted former car ferry.

This charming, welcoming flotilla open up the isles sprinkled along Scotland’s wildlife-rich west coast — both the Firth of Clyde isles and the Hebrides (Inner and Outer) — in a wave of great food, world-class hospitality and big skies.”

Ok, So Why Should You Consider Small-ship Scottish Cruises?

Quirky’s Ted Scull tells us all about why cruising the western waters of Scotland is so wonderful, here in this overview.

Anything To Be Wary Of?

The Weather Forecast

Quirky Cruise is tied to maintaining honesty, even about the weather. And therefore, we must note that the notoriously fickle weather in Scotland can turn dank and dreary — for a few days or just a few hours.

Be patient and with some luck, the sun on the bens (mountains) and the moonlight on the lochs will surely provide a dazzling feast for the eyes.

My last stay in Scotland a few years ago was just the opposite of the region’s changeable reputation — it was sunny — even a bit too warm by midday … for a full week.

I was both delighted and worried; with no rain, just how could the sweeping moors and lush gardens maintain their beauty without being watered.

A garden near Loch long. * Photo: Ted Scull

But then, my first Scottish cruise — aboard the Hebridean Princess — was largely a wet week. It was snuggle-up time aboard enjoying the cozy lounge and library and more time with the locals who were on the ship. And when ashore, choosing destinations that included indoor visits to a castle or stately home.

And there were always in between periods where the wet may be referred as Scottish mist, though often a slight understatement.

Also, keep in mind, there could be a wee (or more than a wee) bout of rocking and rolling in the waters off of western Scotland, so sea legs will help.

Enough on the weather and onto consumables.

Eat, Drink & Be Merry on Small Ship Scottish Cruises

Scotland is known for Scotch and haggis, a popular combo of the locally produced drink and the national dish, with probably the closest equivalent for the latter here in Pennsylvania Dutch country, scrapple, a favorite of mine.

This video below shows how festive the presentation of haggis can be on small-ship Scottish cruises!

Haggis ingredients are usually sheep-based while the latter, pigs. Either way I have no problem, though reading the label, the parts used may cause some a hesitation or even a full stop.

Scotland is well-known for its beef, lamb and venison on land and salmon, halibut, clams, langoustines, oysters, and scallops from the local waters.

Scottish Cruises Boast Lovely Lochs

Cruising into a loch, an arm of the sea, or a lake, is a highlight of any cruise. Loch is a Gaelic word also used in the Irish language.

One of the best known is Loch Lomond which is not connected to the sea but is an inland 24-mile-long lake that can be explored in a local day boat.

Loch Ness, home to the legend (is there or is there not?), is also inland. And to reach it by water, one cruises into Loch Linnhe that leads to a canal lock that accesses several inland lochs, one of which is Ness. Then onward, the boat eventually deposits you near Inverness on the North Sea side of the Scotland.

The tranquil Caledonian Canal is a popular small-ship cruise, especially if you are prone to mal de mer, when in choppy seas.

Cruises may start from Inverness on the east coast or from a port such as Oban on the west coast.

The Isles of Course Are The Whole Point of Small Ship Scottish Cruises

Then there are the islands, hundreds of them, and Scotland identifies them in terms that will be familiar to many readers.

Scotland’s Islands are subdivided into the Inner Hebrides and Outer Hebrides or collectively, the Hebrides.

In Scotland, the description “Western Isles” solely refers to the 130-mile Outer Hebrides archipelago, and not the Inner Hebrides (including Skye) or Firth of Clyde isles.

Most small-ship Scottish cruising explores just a small portion of this large area off Scotland’s western coast, anchoring off terra firma or docking to access the local points of interest, then finding a sheltered bay to anchor for the night before heading to another isle the next morning.

Amongst the Inner Hebrides is Eigg , the island site where in 1577 the MacLeods massacred 395 MacDonalds in a cave, while the more peaceful sites are an Iron Age fort, a 6th-century church and Viking burial mounds.

If you  want to see the MacLeod’s ancestral lair, Dunvegan Castle on Skye reveals 800 years of history.

Iona is a pilgrimage destination where the Irish prince and missionary St. Columba landed in AD563 to start his community. Also of interest is a restored 12th-century abbey.

Muck , in spite of the name, has beautiful beaches and provides a bird sanctuary for fulmar, kittiwake, puffin, sea-eagle and shearwater, and porpoises that gather close to shore.

Mull may be the most popular of the Inner Hebrides, because of its colorful Georgian-style town of Tobermory, and for walkers and hikers, miles of trails draw you out onto the undulating moors. Mull’s coastline is so indented that it measures an unbelievable 300 miles.

Amongst the Outer Hebrides are Lewis , the largest and most northerly island when paired with connecting Harris . It’s home to the famous tweed, and I still have my jacket from decades ago. The former features a rugged terrain that rises to 1,800 feet revealing extensive peat bogs.

The attractions for many are the Standing Stones of Callanish and a broch that dates back into murky prehistory. The only town is Stornoway with ferry connections to mainland Scotland at Ullapool.

St. Kilda , about as far away from the mainland you can get, yet was astonishingly occupied for 5,000 years until the dwindled-down population of less than two score left forever back in the 1930s.

What remains is an outdoor museum of an abandoned village, roamed by sheep, and with massive cliffs that house tens of thousands of birds.

St. Kilda’s location, with the open Atlantic lurking just behind, makes it a weather-dependent landing.

Oban is along the Western Coast is Scotland’s most Important Cruise Port

Many small ship cruises, most based in Scotland, leave from Oban , as do ferries to the nearby islands.

The attractive port will be a mighty busy destination in the summertime. A hilltop tower and battery looms over all from a high bluff, and the view from there is outstanding.

Small Ship Scottish Cruising

Pick your cruise from a plethora of choices with berth capacities as low as a half-dozen and on up the scale, but still a quirky cruise.

Book as individuals or better yet, think about chartering the vessel for a family gathering or a small group of friends.

Other cruises on larger ships will visit the isles off Scotland’s western coast as part of a longer cruise but they won’t be crewed by locals.

When next go over there, I am planning to take one of the new Caledonian sleepers from London to Glasgow to spend a few days in this destination-rich city and then continue by train to my cruise port, mostly likely Oban.

Which line and ship? Well, the list is laid out below for me and you too to ponder on.

Very cool to see all these sites and options. I was in Scotland many years ago but realize there is much more to see, especially all the isles and remote locations on the western side. Although I’m not sure I’m up for trying haggis again (but maybe?), I would love for some beautiful hiking and see the wildlife in the lush green rolling hills near these old historic villages. I’ve never heard of Muck and Mull, but they seem very inviting to me. Thanks.

So glad you found our round-up useful! Scotland’s western isles are breathtaking, rain or shine!

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

How do i visit the blue grotto with a private boat or tour.

The Blue Grotto is managed like a museum, so no private boat tour includes the entrance ticket to the cave. You must purchase your ticket separately at the grotto entrance, where there is a floating ticket office. Visits inside the grotto are possible only when the weather and sea conditions permit. On this page which explains how to visit the Blue Grotto, you can check for updated information about whether the grotto is open or closed. If you rent a boat without a skipper, you can moor at the buoys near the grotto entrance and a skipper will come pick you up with a rowboat to take you inside the grotto.

How much do boat tours cost?

There is a wide range of boat tour prices depending upon the specific type of boat, tour, and departure port. Average prices include:

  • EUR 18/person for a shared 2-hour boat tour around Capri, departing from Capri.
  • EUR 90/person for a small-group tour via a gozzo boat (up to 12 passengers) from Sorrento or Positano to Capri.
  • EUR 160 for a private 2-hour tour.
  • EUR 400 for a full-day boat rental.

What is the difference between a private and small-group boat tour?

A private boat tour gives you the freedom of having a boat all to yourself, while a small-group boat tour means you reserve a spot on a shared boat with other passengers. On Capri, the number of passengers on small-group boat tours varies and depends on how many people are visiting the island on any given day. Passenger numbers begin at around 10 to 15 and can be as many as 80 to 90 passengers on board.

Are there Capri boat tours that depart from Sorrento or Positano?

Yes, there are a number of boat tour options if you want to set sail from Sorrento or Naples. Most cruise around the island and then dock so passengers can disembark and explore the island on land for a few hours.

Tours from Sorrento Tours from Positano

Should I book my Capri boat tour in advance?

Tickets for group boat tours can be purchased directly at the port shortly before departure, though you can save a few euros by booking in advance online. Private boat tours must be booked in advance, especially in the high-season months of July and August when they are in high demand. Reserve your boat tour as soon as you know your travel dates.

VISIT SMALL ISLES

The islands of Canna, Eigg, Muck and Rum lie just south of the Isle of Skye, sitting between the west coast Scottish mainland and the Western Isles. Each island has an abundance of wildlife, rich heritage and incredible landscapes but, while they are close together, each island feels very different. One thing they have in common is they each generate their own electricity from renewable sources.

The Small Isles are accessible by boat or ferry from the mainland with a year round service available from Mallaig and summer sailings available from Arisaig (to Eigg and Muck) and Elgol, Isle of Skye (to Canna, Rum and Eigg). Please note that visitors are not permitted to take cars onto the islands ( with specific exceptions ). Part of the joy in visiting the Small isles is leaving the car behind.

From time to time inclement weather can disrupt travel plans. Scroll down to the bottom of page for further information.

More detailed travel information can be found in this post .

Travel Disruption

Living on an island does mean that we are at the mercy of the weather and when a big storm rolls in, sailings can be cancelled and both residents and visitors can find themselves stranded either on the mainland or the islands themselves.

When choosing a Galapagos boat tour company, there are key criteria that should be kept in mind. Some things to consider are;

  • Choose someone you can trust - when spending money that you have worked hard to earn, it is important to trust that the tour company is going to deliver what they are offering to the quality that you would expect. Take some time to get to know the tour company and don’t rush into a decision.
  • You get what you pay for - keep in mind that quality doesn’t usually come cheap. A trip to the Galapagos islands is often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so spending extra to ensure your vacation is top quality is usually worth it.
  • How knowledgeable is the guide? - When booking a Galapagos boat tour , you expect the crew and guide to be full of passion and experience. They need to be confident and really care about the islands and the information that they are telling you.
  • Research the company - learn about the company; how long they have been in the industry, what is written in previous customer’s reviews, what awards they may have won, and so on. If a company is consistently receiving good testimonials, they are generally a good choice.
  • How personal is the tour? - Small group boat tours create more intimate and personal experiences and enable you to connect with the guide, other guests, and the environment.
