Oosterdam Overview

If you’ve got wanderlust, then Holland America’s ms Oosterdam is the ship for you. The onboard atmosphere is highlighted by a dazzling giant Waterford crystal globe that hangs from the ceiling in the ship’s atrium, representing the travels this ship has and will carry out. Even before reaching your first destination, you’ll be filled with interesting travel tid bits. For instance, you can take a digital workshop where you can learn how to make a virtual scrapbook. Holland America also introduced a new program called On Location with activities and onboard experiences that feature traditions from the regions in which the ms Oosterdam is sailing. If you are sailing to Hawaii, for example, expect a hula lesson and some pineapple themed dishes at the lido deck cafe.

ms Oosterdam cruise ship

ms Oosterdam deck plan review at CruiseMapper provides newest cruise deck plans (2024-2025-2026 valid floor layouts of the vessel) extracted from the officially issued by Holland America deckplan pdf (printable version).

Each of the ms Oosterdam cruise ship deck plans are conveniently combined with a legend (showing cabin codes) and detailed review of all the deck's venues and passenger-accessible indoor and outdoor areas. A separate link provides an extensive information on ms Oosterdam staterooms (cabins and suites), including photos, cabin plans and amenities by room type and category.

MS Oosterdam (2003-built, last refurbished in 2018 March) is the second of all four Vista-class Holland America ships - with sisterships the fleetmates ms Noordam ,  ms Westerdam , ms Zuiderdam , and also the  P&O ship   Arcadia . The Oosterdam ship’s name signifies the Eastern point of the compass in Dutch.

Oosterdam cruise ship deck plan shows a total of 1012 staterooms for 2024 passengers (max capacity is 2429) served by 820 crew-staff. The boat has 11 passenger decks (7 with cabins), 13 lounges and bars, 3 swimming pools (one with retractable glass roof), 5 outdoor Jacuzzis, 14 elevators (4 are scenic/with glass walls).

In 2016, Holland America Line updated MS Oosterdam’s shipboard programming (enrichment, entertainment and children) replacing the old “Dancing With the Stars” with “BBC Earth” content.

  • The ship’s theatre hosts daily expert lectures, presentations, a nature-themed game show with BBC Earth screenings and introductions by the crews that filmed these series. A signature concert in the evenings is based on the “Frozen Planet” program (polar regions-themed) – a spectacular multimedia show with live musicians.
  • The ship’s children club facilities feature an explorer trail, workshops (including on journalism and filming), fact shows (animals, dinosaurs).
  • Holland America themed cruises feature access to the BBC Earth series creators, sharing behind-the-scenes media and stories. Children have the opportunity to participate in filming workshops.

Oosterdam deck plan changes 2016 refurbishment review

During the ship's drydock refurbishment (in May 2016), new cabins were added on Observation Deck 10. These accommodations are shown in Deck 10’s layout. Deck plan 2016 changes also include the addition of the Retreat (adult deck area) on Sports Deck 11 (replacing the two Canvas Cover areas there).

(new) Room Service Menu

Since December 2016, Holland America Oosterdam ship offers a new room service menu that includes a mix of Continental (free) and a la carte breakfast items, as well as sample dishes from the onboard speciality restaurants (Pinnacle Grill, Tamarind, Dive-In Burgers).

  • Complimentary starters, entrees, sandwiches and desserts are offered around the clock.
  • Pinnacle and Neptune Suite passengers enjoy the a la carte breakfast and speciality beverages free of charge.
  • The Tamarind menu offers Seafood, Vegetarian, and Land & Sea bento boxes - each at USD 9,75.
  • The Dive-In menu offers various burgers served with fries. Each costs USD 4,95.
  • The Pinnacle Grill menu offers a steak dish at USD 15 and lobster at USD 20.
  • At breakfast, sample complimentary room service option is a scrambled egg dish. It comes with hash browns and breakfast meats. Other offered dishes are steak and eggs (USD 9,50), smoked salmon benedict (USD 7,50) and fruit smoothie with Greek yoghurt (USD 4,95).

Wonderful Cruise

Aug 15th, 2024

This cruise was a perfect sampling of the ports visited. We did all port days on our own, so cannot speak to the cruise line excursions. However, you will save money doing the tours on your own for the same experience. All the ports felt safer and more comfortable than expected for our first visit to Europe. We have cruised Carnival in the past, and were pleasantly surprised by this Holland America cruise. Service and food was excellent, the cruise director (Erin) was fantastic and engaging. Definitely different from the Carnival experience in some ways, but NOT and older crowd. We had many families, kids, and 20 somethings on this cruise so the diversity of the demographic was a very pleasant surprise! We would do it again!

Great itinerary, Not a great cruise experience

Jun 5th, 2024

I wanted and expected to love it but the ship was just so dated. Then to have the experiences with the Caneletto and Guest Services made it unpleasant. I pre-booked several other cruises because HAL has great itineraries, but I plan on canceling them at this time.

Another wonderful TransAtlantic!

Jun 1st, 2024

This was our second transatlantic and our first Holland America cruise. A couple of Holland loyalists told us not to judge Holland by this cruise as they felt there were a lot of new crew and not as many crew as they had experienced in the past, so told us to keep our expectations low. It was a nice cruise. Many on board were in our age group (late 60's) which was nice for finding good conversation. Food was generally good, but not great. There were nights when the menu's were lack luster. We can highly recommend the Signature Suites; very comfortable and pleasant for a cruise with lots of sea days where you spend a little more time than usual in your cabin. The ship was big enough to be stable on the sea and have enough room for everyone but small enough to not feel overwhelmed finding one's way around. Overall, we enjoyed the cruise very much.

My Cruise Experience was an atrocity

May 27th, 2024

And now for the meaty stuff. I had prepaid Crew Appreciation but this didn't stop me being charged $34 a day for Cruise Appreciation. I complained and the transactions were removed. Rather than a corresponding credit it simply disappeared. Then the Sea View bar charged me for drinks under $11, A credit was applied to my statement by Guest Relations. As you can see my trips from Deck 7 to Deck1 increased for Guest Relations. A hold was taken for 7 days as per contract at $60 x 7 days. Before I had reached that amount another hold for $80 was applied. Back to Guest Relations and asked why and was told it was a calculation, I asked what the calculation was and was told it was a calculation. I began to get concerned about how many holds were going to be applied inappropriately as to many would max out my CC with hods reducing my available credit making it difficult to pay. I asked if I could prepay 300 on my Visa to avoid more dodgy holds, this was point blank refused. I was told to settle my account in cash on the last day, what cash, I didn't have any, this a cashless cruise. I am now completely stressed out by the whole experience. It is a personal tiny mini Horizon/Post Office Systems IT experience. This is the Holland America contract. "The day you board, Holland America Line places an initial hold on your credit card for $30 per person per cruise day. Once you've spent the initial hold amount, we will authorize your card for the total of your onboard purchases to date plus an additional $30 per person per day for the remainder of your cruise. I believe they violated it and refused to explain why. The reason for my lack of credit on my Visa is that the 5* hotel I stayed in Athens for 3 days prior duplicated the billing transaction and it took time to credit the error I travelled on this ship 15 years, it is now a shadow of its former self.

Amazing experience for our family!

May 25th, 2024

While I have been on many cruises in my youth, this was the first time for my husband and adult children. They were apprehensive if they would enjoy it, worrying that it would be cheesy or cheap, but everyone loved the experience. The food and hospitality were top notch. We loved the unique port options as well. A great experience we hope to do again!

This Classic Cruise Ship Has Everything From Black-tie Galas to Fjord Kayaking Excursions – Read Our Review

Cunard's new Queen Anne is based out of Southampton, with plans to sail much of Europe — including the fjords of Norway.

From the damp seat of my sea kayak, the specks falling from the edge of the fjord were nearly imperceptible. There goes one, then another, then another. Suddenly, their parachutes opened. What I thought were leaves or maybe stones knocked loose by a hiker turned out to be wingsuit flyers careening down the rock face at nearly 100 miles an hour. As I paddled back to the beach, more jumpers flew over the edge before gracefully gliding to a safe landing.

I’d come to one of Norway’s adventure capitals thinking that a couple of hours paddling through a fjord would be quite the adventure. It turns out that adrenaline can always go higher.

Of course, that’s why people head to Norway’s fjordlands in the middle of summer, to soak up the sun and get the blood pumping. I’d only just arrived in Flåm aboard the Queen Anne, the newest cruise ship from the storied line Cunard, a favorite of Travel + Leisure readers.

Flåm is the sort of place where you might see, like I did, a hitchhiker carrying a sign that reads “next town” or two dozen souped-up #vanlife rigs parked along the edge of the fjord. It’s filled with kayak outfitters and bike-tour operators and serves as an adventure hub. While it’s possible to road trip yourself — the drive from Oslo takes around five hours — it’s almost certainly more comfortable and convenient to get here by ship. And, if you come by ship, you’re guaranteed a hot shower, a nice meal, and a bit of evening entertainment after a hard day of paddling.

The Queen Anne has 1,498 cabins that accommodate nearly 3,000 guests — bigger than the kinds of ships I tend to enjoy, but I was pleasantly surprised by all the space available on board during my week-long trip.

I’d met the ship in Southampton, England, and after a day crossing the North Sea, we landed in Bergen for a bit of sightseeing around Norway’s second-biggest city. Then, the drama really picked up as Captain David Hudson and their team charted a course through the fjords to Flåm. The dizzying cliffs that hemmed in our course were like nothing I’d ever seen — and, indeed, were all the more stunning from the sundeck.

“Norway is a very popular cruise destination,” said Captain Hudson as we departed. “But sailing along a World Heritage fjord on a sunny, clear evening very close to the summer solstice is an experience few people get to have.”

In these far-northern reaches, the sun would shine for 18 or 19 hours a day, and as the ship sailed away from Flåm, several dozen passengers and I enjoyed the twinkle of the piano in the Commodore Club, with a view of the rocky islets of the Sognefjord. By breakfast the next day, we’d reached the village of Olden, where e-biking, paddling, and hiking were among the adventure activities on offer.

Another scheduled stop, Haugesund, was skipped due to heavy winds. Our resourceful crew instead charted a course into the Hardangerfjord, where we spent the day slowly cruising past salmon farms, waterfalls, and villages that, from the ship, appeared to be delightfully charming bases for glacier hikes.

All the while, back on board, my fellow passengers and I could count on the sort of big-ship amenities many cruise passengers expect. The pool deck, spa, fitness center, and Golden Lion pub seemed to hum at all hours, and a series of variety shows (including a popular murder mystery called Noir ) were well attended by many. The bars and lounges were often full but not overly so, and a general sense of stately calm seemed to permeate the ship, as you might expect from a line that channels British heritage — and had a sizable number of U.K. guests on board.

Like all Cunard ships, Queen Anne retains one maritime tradition in the form of a class system. There are four main categories of travel, in ascending order of opulence: Britannia, Britannia Club, Princess Grill, and Queens Grill. Each class of service has a corresponding dining room; the top two tiers also have their own lounges and outdoor terrace spaces. While all passengers are welcome in most areas of the ship — including its alternative restaurants, many of which come at extra cost — guests in lower-category classes can’t access the high-end amenities. The “ship within a ship” setup is roughly equivalent to what’s available in premium areas on other lines — the Yacht Club of MSC, the Haven on Norwegian — though, on Cunard, the premium passengers have fewer just-for-us amenities than top-class guests on those competing lines.

I was traveling as an entry-level Britannia guest, but I still felt plenty pampered on several occasions, particularly at Sir Samuel’s, an at-extra-cost steakhouse. Yet there were other moments where I must admit, I felt a bit like guest number 2,756 on board, whether trying to flag somebody down for a cappuccino at Carinthia Lounge or when the Wellness Café, which makes a point of having cold-pressed juice, was out of several menu options.

Still, the thrills off the ship made up for many of these minor flubs, some of which might have to do with how new the Queen Anne still is. After all, Cunard carries the weight of 180 years of seagoing tradition, and its ships still host black-tie gala evenings twice a week. Being the crew aboard the newest vessel in that line must be as intimidating as, well, wingsuit flying.

Here’s a closer look at the new Cunard cruise ship Queen Anne 's amenities, restaurants, staterooms, and services.

  • Queen Anne is a well-appointed, 1,498-cabin ship with endless options for things to do, plentiful dining choices, and comfortable public spaces.
  • Interesting itineraries travel to places like the fjords of Norway or sailing the coast of Spain — and would be hard to replicate any other way.
  • There are some high-end dining choices, including Sir Samuel’s, and a stacked wine cellar with many impressive a la carte bottles.

The Staterooms

With 1,498 cabins, Queen Anne has a wide variety of choices. The entry-level rooms inside cabins without so much as a window are hyper-efficient and aggressively priced. By contrast, high-end Princess and Queens Grill suites come with butler service, balconies, and all sorts of extras. (A half-dozen Queens Grill Grand and Master suites are among the finest in Cunard’s fleet.)

About half of the rooms on board, though, were like mine, a Britannia Balcony cabin with a touch of art deco in the design. Besides the balcony, my favorite feature of room 8156 was the bathroom, which had a spacious-for-a-ship shower stall and plenty of storage and light. The rest of the room, including hanging storage and a small desk that also housed a petite minibar, was functional and clean, if not exactly breathtaking in terms of the overall vibe. One additional note: I found the onboard Wi-Fi to be pretty fast and reliable, even in the middle of the North Sea, though I did have to reload a sign-in splash page every morning.

Bars and Restaurants

Bring an appetite because Queen Anne is filled with fantastic dining venues and several excellent bars. Each category of travel — Britannia, Britannia Club, Princess Grill, and Queens Grill — has its own main dining room with a corresponding name, with either set dining times or open seating, depending on guest preference. While the menus in each are ever-changing — and, at the high end, are stuffed with decadent dishes such as lobster thermidor — the overall tenor of the cuisine is continental, with heavy British influence. On my trip, meals in Britannia were multi-course affairs, served with an old-school flourish by a capable, pleasant team. An extensive buffet called Artisans’ Foodhall seemed to have almost anything you could want at virtually any hour.

Elsewhere on board, several specialty restaurants were available at an extra charge. Among my standouts were Golden Lion, a traditionally styled pub open for lunch and pints, and Sir Samuel’s, an elevated steakhouse with extraordinary raw-bar platters. Other options include Aranya, an Indian restaurant; Tramonto, a pan-Mediterannean spot; and Aji Wa, for sushi and other Japanese fare. While I loved the concept of the Wellness Café, which overlooks the pool and has a long menu of pressed juices, smoothies, and bowls, I found the execution of dishes a bit lackluster over several visits.

The cocktail bars and lounges, however, were consistently on point, with a variety of themes, whether the classic Chart Room, with Champagne and martinis; the casino bar, which specializes in Negronis; or Cabana, a rum joint with dozens of selections but, to my disappointment, limited hours. Throughout the ship, non-alcoholic options were also widely available, with NA cocktails listed on many menus.

Where Queen Anne Sails

For the time being, Southampton, England, is Queen Anne 's home port. Weeklong trips to places such as Norway, the Iberian Peninsula, and the Canary Islands are among the routes available. A couple of particularly compelling itineraries for 2025 include a two-week sail from Southampton that travels around the British Isles and a 12-day itinerary that explores the fjords of Norway, which will be pretty similar to the route I traveled.

The ship is scheduled to sail a 111-day world cruise in the upcoming winter months, departing Hamburg, Germany, in January 2025. It will cross the Atlantic Ocean, transit the Panama Canal, sail the Pacific, and visit ports in Asia and the Middle East before traveling through the Suez Canal and back to Hamburg.

Shore Excursions

For all the amenities on board, Queen Anne is also a compelling way to explore interesting destinations: On my sail to Norway, Cunard had arranged numerous activities in every port, ranging from simple city-center walks to full-day active adventures to splurge-worthy excursions like a helicopter flight over a glacier. While shore excursions on Cunard come at extra cost, I found the process of choosing and booking them online very easy; compared to other cruise lines, Cunard did an excellent job of describing the tours, the activity level, and the value prop of every activity.

During my trip, I was particularly thrilled with the experience of e-biking in Olden with a local guide who took our group of 12 to his own family’s lakeside farm, where we ate wild strawberries and heard stories about rural life. Then, there was the excellent morning of kayaking alongside several paddling guides, who steered a group of about 20 passengers to a secluded beach before we turned back and saw those wingsuit fliers. Truly high-end adventures, such as an overflight of the Briksdal Glacier, are, predictably, expensive, but most of my tours were priced competitively compared to third-party options.

Amenities and Entertainment

Cunard excels at keeping guests entertained. At any hour, there are countless things to do, whether card games, trivia competitions, archery lessons (seriously), dancing, live music, shopping, high tea, lectures, fitness classes, pickleball, minigolf, and so on. One daily program from my trip listed at least 69 different activities during a sea day when we had no stop in port scheduled. Among the highlights for me were the competitive rounds of trivia held in the Golden Lion and the sounds of live piano that filled the ship’s many bars and lounges every evening. Of course, this being a Cunard ship, there were also big band–style tunes at the Queens Room, particularly on the black-tie Gala Nights, of which there are two on week-long itineraries. Live performances in the Royal Court Theater included several musical reviews and stage shows that, as is common on ships, had brief runtimes.

The ship’s spa and fitness area were very popular on my sailing, and most passengers I spoke with were satisfied with the treatments and amenities. The wellness areas, most of which are on a lower deck, forward, didn’t have much in the way of views — but that didn’t make them any less popular. One exception is a Wellness Studio, located under a pergola near the pool, that hosted yoga and other movement classes in the fresh air. Nice.

Queen Anne has a fantastic main pool deck called the Pavilion, with tons of loungers, an excellent array of food and drinks, and a glass roof that allows for all-weather enjoyment. The outdoor Panorama Pool Club is an alternate swimming pool with views over the stern of the ship. (Princess and Queens Grill guests have their own terrace, with twin whirlpools, which I was sadly unable to visit.) As is becoming standard on new vessels, there’s also a pickleball court, along with other more traditional sun-deck sports, including minigolf, shuffleboard, and table tennis.

Family-friendly Offerings

Cunard may have a buttoned-up, black-tie reputation, but I saw many families and groups traveling on my sailing. It makes sense: This ship offers so much that anybody can dial in what they’re looking for. (And despite the formality sometimes required in the restaurants and entertainment venues in the evenings, several spots on board are casual around the clock.)

A few kid-specific, age-appropriate hangouts are on board: the Play Zone is for those 2 to 7; the Kids’ Zone is meant for tweens; and the Teen Zone welcomes older children. Depending on the day, they’re staffed for several hours, with activities and games. Cunard also offers a Night Nursery service for very young ones, 6 months up to 2 years of age, so that parents can have an evening “out.” The main pool also welcomes all ages. Suites, in particular, have plenty of room to accommodate families, and there are 100 connecting staterooms on board.

Accessibility

Cunard is well-suited to individuals with limited mobility, and I noticed that many guests on my sailing used mobility aids. The line keeps a detailed guide to its many accessibility policies and procedures online. On Queen Anne, there are 33 cabins and suites designated as accessible.

On my sailing, many announcements were made over a public address system, and it wasn’t immediately apparent what alternative accommodations may have been available.

This Brand-new Cruise Ship Is a Nonstop Party — With 40+ Restaurants and Bars and Stage Shows That Wow

The new Utopia of the Seas is a Royal Caribbean mega-ship, with a seemingly endless array of things to do plus short itineraries that make a turnkey vacation easy.

oosterdam cruise ship

The Staterooms

Bars and restaurants, where utopia of the seas sails, shore excursions, amenities and entertainment, family-friendly offerings, accessibility.

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

The first time I saw Utopia of the Seas some eight months ago, the ship was just a shell, under construction at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard, in Saint-Nazaire, France. Back then, the Royal Caribbean vessel was essentially a blank canvas, shrouded in scaffolding and netting, with patches of pale blue livery splotched across the hull.

By the time I boarded the 2,834-cabin vessel in Florida last week, Utopia of the Seas had come to life, absolutely bursting with color and music, with a big emphasis on the music. In fact, the beats were booming before I even stepped aboard, as music reverberated through the balloon-bedecked terminal during embarkation, prompting me to ask my check-in agent if she had brought earplugs. "Next sailing, I will," she said.

Royal Caribbean calls Utopia of the Seas "the World's Biggest Weekend," promising nonstop partying on three- and four-night itineraries to the Bahamas sailing out of Port Canaveral, near Orlando. And party we did, during a preview sailing that included a celebration of the ship's naming by godmother Meghan Trainor.

Roy Riley/Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

With only three nights to take the whole ship in, it was go time from the moment I stepped aboard. I attempted to visit as many of the 40-plus restaurants, bars, and lounges as I could, and I also tried to catch as many of the shows and pop-up parties — everything from Vegas-style day ragers to actual beer pong sessions — as possible.

It was, perhaps unsurprisingly, an effort in futility. There is simply no way to experience all the onboard offerings during such a short itinerary, and I found myself entirely drained by the mad dash from venue to venue. And that's not to mention the constant barrage of music from the ship's extraordinary sound systems, which all seemed to be turned up to 11, all the time. Meghan Trainor was right — it really is all about that bass on Utopia of the Seas.

So, take it from someone who flew a little too close to the sun : Don't try to do everything. Instead, pick a few things to do off the never-ending daily program, then see how your sailing unfolds. If I learned anything during my stint on Utopia of the Seas, it's that there are two must-dos onboard: the Aqua80sToo show and dinner at the Royal Railway, a brand-new venue for Royal Caribbean.

For more on each of these incredible activities and to prepare for your own trip, read on for my full review of Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas .

Utopia of the Seas

  • You can't possibly be bored on this ship, with its world-class entertainment each evening and parties being thrown practically round the clock.
  • Royal Railway is one of the most innovative dining concepts at sea.
  • Even the smallest staterooms have excellent storage, but the suites are a worthwhile splurge to have a bit of a sanctuary on the party-hard ship.

oosterdam cruise ship

There are 20 cabin categories across Utopia, ranging from inside staterooms with “digital windows” that show a live feed from outside to huge suites with ample space and amenities. The question to ask is whether you plan to spend your three- or four-day trip inside your own cabin or exploring the ship: If you’re somebody who’s only going to crash after a full day partying around the ship, a smaller room might be plenty. Alternatively, if you want a peaceful retreat, you might consider a Solarium Suite. These spacious rooms are located atop the bridge, on the "wings" of the ship, with panoramic views of the sea.

Where to even begin? There are more than 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges on Utopia, serving everything from sushi (Izumi) to Italian (Giovanni's) to burgers (Johnny Rockets).  I didn't even have a chance to try dinner in the main dining room — but that's certainly a no-reservations-required option.

For quick eats, there's the all-day Windjammer Cafe buffet, the Mexican-inspired Cantina Fresca buffet for lunch and dinner, the grab-and-go pizza spot Sorrento's (a favorite of the late-night crowd), and even a poolside food truck.

As for bars, the most notable is Pesky Parrot, a tiki bar on the promenade with a menu of on-the-rocks and frozen cocktails. I found most of the bars on board to be so loud that you have to yell to have a conversation; ironically, the casino bar was one of the quietest places on the ship, save for the spa.

One particular dining venue merits special mention here. Royal Railway , which I wrote about for T+L back in February, is an immersive dinner show that’s unlike anything else on a cruise ship today.

The evening experience begins with a ticket delivered to your cabin, and as you approach the restaurant for your "train ride," your name appears on a split-flap departure board outside the “station.” A conductor checks your tickets, and off you go to your table in the dining car.

Without spoiling the plot of the theme park–style experience, you can expect an interactive meal and even the feel of being on a real train car rumbling down the rails. Performers bring the Wild West–inspired set to life, though Royal Caribbean says other themes, like a Silk Road journey, may eventually debut. I found it to be a captivating dinner-theater show and something totally different, in a good way.

The ship's home port is Port Canaveral, Florida, from which it offers three- and four-night trips to the Bahamas. The three-night trips visit Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, while four-night itineraries stop both there and in Nassau. It’s also possible to combine sailings to create a week-long vacation.

My only time off the ship came during a visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay. This private island for Royal Caribbean passengers has various zones with different vibes: A water park caters to families and thrill-seekers — you can't miss the tallest waterslide in North America — while Chill Island is for lounging on the beach. An adults-only Hideaway Beach is where the party vibes continue. Guests can also book excursions including snorkeling tours, Jet Skiing, and swimming with pigs .

Like all mega-ships , Utopia has just about any amenity you can imagine: pools, water slides, a FlowRider, rock climbing walls, an escape room, laser tag, mini golf, the list goes on and on. I'd like to call particular attention to the spa, which was fairly bare-bones considering how over-the-top the rest of the ship is. I booked a massage to get away from the party but was disappointed that Utopia doesn’t offer the kind of full-service spa experience I’ve had on other big ships. After checking in, I was directed into a co-ed waiting room — there was no locker room where I could slip on a robe — then brought to my treatment room. And when I asked if I could use the thermal suite after my treatment, I was informed I'd need to book a separate day pass.

Entertainment, though, is a strong suit for Royal Caribbean. The theater shows on Utopia are all fairly short — less than an hour long, which leaves you plenty of time to party elsewhere — but they’re full-on spectacles with impressive sets, costumes, and lighting design. These include a song-and-dance medley (complete with drones flying through the venue) in the main theater, an ice-skating show, and the absolutely amazing Aqua80sToo, which is staged in the ship’s AquaTheater.

To say this production blew me out of the water would be an understatement. Imagine you're at SeaWorld waiting to see the Shamu show, but instead of an orca leaping hoops, a troupe of high-energy aquatic acrobats bursts forth from the pool as high divers plunge from towering heights. Oh, and this is all done to an incredible ‘80s soundtrack — hello, millennial nostalgia! The athleticism and artistry of the performers was phenomenal. (Let’s just say their diving, aerial moves, and dancing had me amped for the Paris Olympics.) If I were to travel on Utopia again, I’d be booking a seat at this show every single night.

Elsewhere on the ship, there are smaller but still interesting acts, including comedy shows in The Attic. a delightful pianist in Schooner's. a rock band in the Music Hall. At every turn, there's a show somewhere; there's no way you’d be able to catch them all.

While Royal Caribbean as a whole is undoubtedly a family-friendly cruise line, I think Utopia is perhaps best for adults and teenagers, not young children. There are plenty of family-friendly amenities, from the Splashaway Bay waterpark to the Adventure Ocean kids' club, but given the party atmosphere I experienced, I'd probably pick another ship if I were traveling with younger kids.

Utopia has 46 accessible cabins, according to the vessel's deck plan, in a variety of categories. During my sail, I got a tour of one, which had extra-wide doors, a roll-in shower, a lowered sink, and lowered closet rods, among other ADA-compliant features. Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Utopia is also equipped with portable visual and tactile alert systems, which can be brought into any cabin. Royal Caribbean also has online an extensive FAQ about accessibility features , as well as a contact center for accessibility questions.
