The Grand Tour

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed why it’s the end of the road for The Grand Tour . Clarkson said he and co-hosts, James May and Richard Hammond, decided to quit the Amazon Prime Video show after running out of steam.

In an interview with The Times of London , Clarkson said it was becoming increasingly difficult to conjure up outlandish adventures for the show and that the presenters were all showing their age.

He added that The Grand Tour missions are “immensely physical” and had become increasingly difficult when “you’re unfit and fat and old.” “If you’re Bear Grylls you go to a hotel — there aren’t any hotels in the Sahara desert,” Clarkson said.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May confirmed last November that they had filmed their final installments of  The Grand Tour . Two final episodes of the motoring series were recorded in Mauritania and Zimbabwe and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

Fozia Khan, Amazon Studios’ head of unscripted in the UK, said the brand could survive with another set of presenters. “It’s come to its natural end,” she said, adding that her team was “thinking about” how the show can live on.

Clarkson will continue to host Clarkson’s Farm for Amazon after the series has become the streamer’s highest-rated UK original. Filming on Season 4 is set to begin this year. Clarkson is also hosting more Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for ITV.

The Times interviewer Ed Potton wrote that he was told not to ask Clarkson about his reviled The Sun newspaper column about Meghan Markle. Clarkson wrote that he imagines the day Markle is paraded “naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.” The piece was retracted and Amazon made clear its fury at the article.

Asked if he feels under pressure to be controversial, Clarkson said: “No! I like being controversial. Some people who see a still pond find that peaceful, but I cannot resist throwing a stone in it.”

The Grand Tour release date speculation: When is Zimbabwe episode out?

The Zimbabwe special will be The Grand Tour's last episode.

The Grand Tour is coming to an end with its upcoming Zimbabwe special.

The boys tried their hand at desert travel in the last episode, Sand Job, which was released in February and which saw them battle extreme heat in less than optimal rides. There were surprises , literal minefields, and even an encounter with some Ebola-carrying bats.

We can bet Zimbabwe will throw a few curveballs their way, too. The upcoming will be The Grand Tour's last, Prime Video has confirmed, after Jeremy Clarkson confirmed he was leaving the series.

Have the trio decided what's next, then? Well, Richard Hammond recently told RadioTimes.com he would be cycling around the Himalayas .

As for James May, the host did offer fans a glimmer of hope for a reunion, saying, "I wouldn’t rule [a reunion] out, but you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit. I have been doing it for 20 years plus and I don’t think any of us ever thought it would last that long.”

Luckily, we have their farewell episode to enjoy still. But what can viewers expect from the Zimbabwe special? Read on to find out everything we know.

When will the next episode of The Grand Tour be released?

James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond all stood in the desert with their hands on their hips

Prime Video has yet to confirm when the Zimbabwe special will land, but it's expected to be released later in 2024 .

Filming for the episode, which will follow on from February's Mauritanian trip, Sand Job, took place in September 2023.

The Grand Tour locations

The trio have previously filmed in far-flung locations such as Colombia, Vietnam and Switzerland - and this time will be no different.

The newest instalment will see the trio head back to Africa. February saw them visit Mauritania, country in the Northwest of the continent, and the final episode will take them to Zimbabwe.

Speaking of the location, Clarkson said: "I love deserts, so I've always wanted to do the Sahara, but it's difficult to go there; you can't go to Mali or Libya or Algeria or Chad. You can't go to the top of Nigeria.

"And then it was really a question of finding the most inappropriate cars for trans-Sahara travel, and I think we did a pretty good job on that."

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown: release date, trailer and new episodes explained

What we know about the show's Scotland and Russia specials

The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour season 4, episode 3 is coming on July 30, Amazon has confirmed – and it'll take co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to Scotland in a special called Lochdown. The episode was actually filmed in 2020, mid-pandemic, so hopefully we won't have to wait too long to see it. The special will imitate the feeling of an American road trip – without actually requiring the British hosts to leave their country.

There's a first trailer for The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown, too, which you can see below.

There's more good news if you're a fan of The Grand Tour Presents: a new episode has been filming this year in Wales and parts of England like Warwickshire. This dovetails with what James May said in an interview last year about filming more episodes closer to home in an effort to release them more regularly. Given how languid the releases have become lately – a year separated the release of the last two specials, Seamen and A Massive Hunt – that will come as a relief.

Below, we'll tell you everything we know about the future of The Grand Tour Presents on Amazon Prime – including details about the Scotland-based Lochdown special, what we know about the new UK episode as it films, and what happened to the lost Russia special that was originally set to follow A Massive Hunt.

  • Best Amazon Prime Video shows
  • Best streaming services compared
  • Best Netflix shows

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown release date is July 30, 2021

The next special in The Grand Tour Presents series is called Lochdown – and it just got a release date of July 30 on Amazon Prime Video. Check out the trailer in the section below for confirmation.

That's not all that's coming from Clarkson and pals in the foreseeable future, though.

As of April 2021, another special for The Grand Tour was filming in the UK – the three hosts were spotted filming in Llandrindod Wells, Wales, by The Grand Tour Fans YouTube channel . They were each driving classic French cars, which hints a little at the theme for the episode. Jeremy Clarkson was apparently spotted driving a Citroën CX Break, James May was glimpsed in a Renault Avantime, while Richard Hammond was reportedly in a Matra Murena, according to the channel. Later, the hosts were spot in Leamington in England, filming near a retail park.

That episode seems like it's probably a while away, though. Let's go through what we know about the Lochdown special's filming, first. A first teaser for that episode was released on social media earlier this year – Clarkson describes the special as The Grand Tour 'unplugged'.

Earlier plans to record an episode in Russia were put on-hold because of the pandemic (see below) – so the Lochdown special was filmed in Scotland across nine days earlier in 2020 instead.

"We did it in area of Scotland with not many people," co-host James May told BT . "We didn’t interact with the locals really. There were complicated systems set up for cleaning everything and it was a bit tiresome going through lots of procedures and being tested every day, but it didn’t get in the way of filming to be honest."

The hosts couldn't go to the pub after filming the episode, which must've been a challenge.

While it might be a long wait until the trio and their crew can head to more exotic locations, the intent is to keep making episodes in locations where it's easier to pull off – hence why a Wales-filmed special probably makes sense. "In the short term we might have to reduce our travel ambitions and we’ll have a better chance of doing it," May says. "Better to film in the UK and deliver regularly than promise the earth and not deliver anything. The Grand Tour may become a little more domestic. But it will still be us three which is the important thing. And cars."

That bodes well for the future – and who knows, maybe we'll start seeing episodes of The Grand Tour season 4 land more regularly than once every year again.

The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown trailer

Och aye the new trailer for The Grand Tour Presents... #Lochdown is here pic.twitter.com/0eobci0wpL July 15, 2021

Check out the trailer for The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown above, which was released in July 2021.

To film the upcoming Scotland special during the pandemic, the crew formed a bubble, and no one caught Covid-19 during the shoot. It was reported that the hosts were seen driving classic American cars from Edinburgh to the Hebrides – which suggests some kind of Route 66-style road trip element.

Clarkson was seen driving a blue Lincoln, May was seen driving a red Cadillac, and Hammond was seen in a green Buick. The trio also took part in a drag race on a runway somewhere in south Scotland, for which the cars mentioned were apparently modified, and were seen towing caravans at one point too.

May says that being a bit closer to the home for the hosts doesn't matter that much – after all, viewers on Amazon Prime Video could be watching it from anywhere. "If you're watching The Grand Tour from Sri Lanka, Scotland is as exotic and beautiful as Sri Lanka is from Scotland, so there's always going to be a large part of the audience which finds anywhere in the world fascinating."

And hey, anything that gets the hosts to film new episodes faster seems like a good thing.

The Grand Tour season 4 Russia special: what we know

Yes, the next Special will land later this year.Yes, it’s filmed in Madagascar and yes, there will be cars.Yes, we wanted to go to Russia. No, we couldn’t (we all know why).Yes, we will try again. No, we don’t know when.Yes, we will keep you updated.#TheGrandTour July 7, 2020

The next planned episode for The Grand Tour Presents was meant to take the hosts to Russia – and this is still the idea, one day. It's just been postponed for now due to the pandemic. James May says that lots of preparation has been made for this special, but that it's "just impossible right now". Hopefully, with the incoming wave of vaccines, that might be able to change in future – but it seems unlikely you'll see a Russia special of The Grand Tour at any point in the next year or so.

After the next UK special, though, Clarkson did confirm the plan was to film abroad – they're just not sure where yet.

Tour de France TV channel, start time and how to watch stage one online today

The Tour de France promises plenty of intriguing with a peloton packed with storylines battles across three weeks of racing.

For the first time, the Grand Tour will begin in Italy, with Florence hosting the Grand Depart and San Marino becoming the 14th country to be visited by a stage.

The finish to the race will look rather different, too, as a time trial in Nice replaces the traditional Champs-Elysees sprint due to the ongoing preparations for Paris 2024.

The individual time trial will be the first to conclude the Tour since 1989, when Greg LeMond memorably pipped Laurent Fignon in the closest edition in history.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the 2024 Tour de France.

When is the Tour de France?

The 2024 Tour de France will be held between June 29 and July 21 and consist of 21 stages, with two rest days included in the itinerary. The race will not finish in (or near) Paris for the first time since its inception as Nice is instead utilised — the French capital is out of action due to the Olympics later this summer.

Where is the Grand Depart?

The Grand Depart will be held in Italy for the first time, with Florence in Tuscany selected to begin the route. Stage 1 will finish in the coastal resort of Rimini, while the next three stages will also begin in Italy before the race crosses the border.

How long is the Tour?

In all, the peloton will cover 3,492km (2,170 miles) across 21 days of racing. Stage 3 (Piacenza to Turin) is the longest stage at 229km (142 miles), while the 133 km (83 miles) route on Stage 20 (Nice to Col de La Couillole) is the shortest road stage. There are two individual time trials: Stage 7 is 25km (16 miles), and the final stage from Monaco to Nice will be contested over 34km (21 miles).

How can I watch it?

Viewers in the United Kingdom will again have the choice of two broadcasters. ITV will provide free coverage on ITV4 and ITVX, while the Tour de France will also be available to subscribers on Eurosport and discovery+.

Eurosport’s coverage of the opening stage begins at 10.30am BST on Saturday 29 June, while ITV viewers can tune in from 10.45am.

If you’re travelling abroad and want to watch major sporting events, you might need a VPN to unblock your streaming app. Our VPN round-up is here to help and includes deals on VPNs in the market. Viewers using a VPN need to make sure that they comply with any local regulations where they are, and also with the terms of their service provider.

Who are the favourites for victory?

There are set to be four main contenders for general classification victory, though each of the quartet arrives with significant questions about their readiness for the year’s second Grand Tour. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) will seek a three-peat but has not raced since sustaining a broken collarborne and other injuries in a serious crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in April.

Primoz Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) were also injured in the incident, though the pair returned to racing at the recent Criterium du Dauphine as Roglic took overall victory.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) meanwhile enters attempting a Giro-Tour double having secured the maglia rosa in Italy earlier this year — no male rider has won both races in a single season this century.

Eritrean cyclist makes Tour de France history as first Black stage winner

Two years after becoming the first Black competitor to win a Grand Tour stage, Biniam Girmay, 24, won the third leg of cycling’s most prestigious race.

on grand tour

Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay wrote his name in the Tour de France history books Monday, becoming the first Black rider to win a stage in cycling’s most prestigious competition.

Girmay, who hadn’t placed better than 101st in the first two stages, finished with a time of 5 hours 26 minutes 48 seconds in the third leg, which stretched a Tour-long 143.4 miles from Piacenza to Turin in Italy.

The 24-year-old was emotional and still processing the feat during a post-race interview.

“It’s for all [of] Africa,” Girmay said. “Congrats, I would say. I’m just super happy today.”

Girmay became the continent’s third rider to win a Tour de France stage, joining South Africans Robert Hunter (2007) and Daryl Impey (2019). Chris Froome, who has won seven Grand Tours — including the Tour de France four times — was born in Kenya but represents Britain.

“We must be proud. Now we are really part of the big races,” Girmay said. “Now it’s our moment. It’s our time.”

“This is super important. There is a whole continent that has been waiting for this,” Aike Visbeek, performance director for Girmay’s Intermarché Wanty team, said Monday. “It’s been done now, and I hope it will open the floodgates for more riders from Africa. He’s an ambassador in every way.”

Girmay bested Colombia’s Fernando Gaviria and Belgium’s Arnaud De Lie, who finished second and third in the stage.

“I never dreamed to be part of Tour de France. But now, here, I can’t believe it,” Girmay said. “To win in Tour de France … for me was unbelievable.”

In 2022, Girmay became the first Black African to win a stage of a Grand Tour when he won the 10th stage of the Giro d’Italia. However, he had to bow out of that race after a cork he popped on the podium struck him in the eye.

Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz holds the yellow jersey as the individual leader and Spain’s Movistar Team holds the best team time through three stages.

Grand Tour: What’s Abbie Eaton Doing Since Leaving the Prime Video Car Show

British racing driver, Abbie Eaton, rose to fame when she appeared on the second series of The Grand Tour as the test driver. We are taking a look at some of the many things Eaton has been up to since her time on the show starring Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond, and James May .

Eaton is still listed as a test driver for The Grand Tour, so here is to hoping we might see her make a return.

Table of Contents

on grand tour

Abbie competed in the W Series in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. In 2021, Eaton competed for the Ecurie W team and came 13th overall with 19 points and in 2022 she drove for Scuderia W and came 13th overall again with 11 points.

Unfortunately, it was announced this year that the W Series was not going to be continuing. When the news broke, Abbie took to her Instagram to share the news with her followers. She wrote:

“W Series season curtailed. A real shame this is the end for @wseriesracing 2022 season. “A season I didn’t think I’d be able to make nearly 1 year ago, and one I knew would be a real challenge, both physically building strength and also mentally getting back to where I used to be pre injury. “If you ignore being wiped out at Miami and Paul Ricard, and the car failure at Barcelona, I’ve actually been extremely pleased with my progress, just a shame my final position doesn’t reflect this not being able to capitalise on these final 3 races. “But, more importantly, a big thank you to @wseriesracing and the team that work tirelessly to make things happen. I know it’s been a difficult year and an even more difficult few weeks but we appreciate every single one of you. “Congrats to Chadders for another title. @jamiechadwick “

Other racing

Eaton has also been competing in other racing series. As well as the W Series in 2021, she also competed in the GT Cup Championship GTO and the British Endurance Championship Praga.

Eaton raced for the JMH Automotive team in the GT Cup Championship GTO. She won the championship with 3 race wins, 4 pole positions, 4 fastest laps, and 3 podium finishes.

Driving for Team Praga Three Lions in the British Endurance Championship Praga, Eaton came 8th overall with 1 race win, 2 pole positions, 3 fastest laps, and 2 podium finishes.

A year since breaking her back

on grand tour

Eaton broke her back in a scary accident during the 2021 W Series at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin and as a result obviously had to take a break from racing and go through extensive rehabilitation. Abbie posted to her Instagram recently to acknowledge it being a year since the accident.

“Well guys it’s the 1 year anniversary since breaking my back at COTA…seems a lonnnngggg time ago! “Feeling very grateful for my improvement and pleased I dug in and made this year work. It’s been rough, and I still get good and bad days with it but I guess this is the new me. Mentally a bit of work needed but it’ll come! “Wish I was racing back at COTA this weekend but I’m enjoying driving the Holden at Donington Park instead. “Enjoy the whacky hair photos when it was unwashed for a fair while at the early days of the injury”

Working with Fisker

Fisker is an American electric vehicle company and Eaton has been working with them to promote the Fisker Ocean. Again, Abbie shared the news to her Instagram followers saying:

“Having a great time at Magna giving journalists a taste of the new Fisker Ocean in pre production form before SOP on 17th November. “We set up a course with 5 stations to test the dynamics of the car including a launch zone, slalom, elk test, wet grip and high speed oval. “

Richard Hammond’s Workshop appearance

on grand tour

Abbie recently made an appearance on Hammond’s Discovery + show, Richard Hammond’s Workshop and also featured on the DriveTribe video which showed the behind the scenes of the show. During the video, viewers saw Eaton join the team for the shakedown of the MGB GT racing car ahead of its racing debut.

Helping women in motorsport

There has been an emphasis on females in the motorsport industry recently. Eaton has done a lot of female racing drivers over the years and just recently was coaching some young aspiring female drivers with Porsche.

On top of all of this, Eaton continues to raise awareness for the LGBTQ+ community and women in motorsport.
