After eight years, The Grand Tour is coming to an end, with one final special on the way later this year - and we finally know just when we can expect it to arrive on Prime Video .

This is thanks to James May, who has revealed the month of release while speaking during a live recording of The Today Podcast with Amol Rajan and Nick Robinson.

During the interview, May said of the final episode of The Grand Tour: "I’m not allowed to tell you what date it’s coming out, so I won’t say that it’s September. I can say anything I want now, frankly."

May also spoke on the emotional nature of the filming and recording for the final episode, and said he didn't expect to ever make another series about cars with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond all stood in the desert with their hands on their hips

He said: "I recorded today the last piece of voice-over I will ever record for The Grand Tour – and therefore in that whole legacy of Grand Tour, Top Gear and the few things I did before that.

"We’ve done it for nearly 22 years – a lot longer than we thought we would. I thought, when I started doing it in 2003 or 2004, that this was a bit of a laugh. Maybe it’ll last a few years.

"And, here we are, grey and wizened and sagging. And we’ve only just stopped doing it. It’s quite remarkable."

We already know that the final episode of The Grand Tour will be set in Zimbabwe, though little else is known about what we can expect.

May previously said he "wouldn’t rule out" a reunion with Clarkson and Hammond in another show, but added that "you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit".

He continued: "I have been doing it for 20 years plus, and I don’t think any of us ever thought it would last that long."

Jeremy Clarkson's eight-word Grand Tour farewell revealed as finale release date confirmed in new trailer

Jeremy Clarkson had some rather poignant words for The Grand Tour fans in the trailer for the show's final-ever special.

For the final time, the trio of Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond will join forces in the last episode of the Amazon motoring show, titled One for the Road.

The trio filmed the special last year shortly after they'd visited Mauritania for their penultimate instalment, Sand Job.

But it's been a long wait to see what the long-time pals get up to behind the wheel after they headed to Zimbabwe to film One for the Road.

The special marks the end of a 22-year collaboration between the motoring enthusiasts who've been entertaining viewers ever since their Top Gear days.

And the trailer promises One for the Road is going to be an emotional affair for diehard Grand Tour and Top Gear fans as it opens with the three men driving their cars through the Zimbabwean wilderness.

Rather than being able to hear what the trio gets up to as clips from the special play, The Hollies classic He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother plays over the top.

In the trailer, fans get to see the three men share a laugh after an inevitable mishap, Clarkson struggle with a map, Hammond and May try to fix a broken down vehicle, and - of course - high-speed drives with picturesque views.

Little is said in the promo as the music takes centre stage but the clip from Amazon does treat fans to some rather tear-jerking words from Clarkson.

As he begins driving, Clarkson turns to the camera and says to The Grand Tour fans: "So, for the last time... here we go."

Fans will get to see what Clarkson, May and Hammond get up to when One for the Road drops on Amazon Prime Video on September 13.

shortly after the trailer's release, fans rushed to the show's official Instagram account to share their reactions to the finale promo - and it's safe to say dry eyes were a rarity.

"I’m actually gonna cry throughout this episode," one fan penned in response.

While a second similarly commented: "I am going to cry when watching this... A part of my childhood is ending."

"We knew this was coming but it doesn’t hurt any bit less…" a third weighed in before a fourth said: "And so, The 3 Wise Men have reached the end of their journey. Thanks for everything chaps."

Elsewhere, a fifth surmised: "We are so gonna miss you beautiful people. Thanks for all the laughs and for being the backbone of the car enthusiast community for longer than we deserved." (sic)

Amazon hasn't given away too many details of what fans can expect but did release a short synopsis to get excitement levels rising.

It said: "In their last adventure, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May ignore the instructions of Mr Wilman and head to Zimbabwe in three cars they’ve always wanted to own...

"A Lancia Montecarlo, a Ford Capri 3-litre, and a Triumph Stag, for a stunning road trip through beautiful and sometimes challenging landscapes leading to an emotional ending on a strangely familiar island."

The Grand Tour

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed why it’s the end of the road for The Grand Tour . Clarkson said he and co-hosts, James May and Richard Hammond, decided to quit the Amazon Prime Video show after running out of steam.

In an interview with The Times of London , Clarkson said it was becoming increasingly difficult to conjure up outlandish adventures for the show and that the presenters were all showing their age.

Jeremy Clarkson Hints At Season Five For Amazon Prime Hit 'Clarkson's Farm'

Watch on deadline.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May confirmed last November that they had filmed their final installments of  The Grand Tour . Two final episodes of the motoring series were recorded in Mauritania and Zimbabwe and will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

Fozia Khan, Amazon Studios’ head of unscripted in the UK, said the brand could survive with another set of presenters. “It’s come to its natural end,” she said, adding that her team was “thinking about” how the show can live on.

Clarkson will continue to host Clarkson’s Farm for Amazon after the series has become the streamer’s highest-rated UK original. Filming on Season 4 is set to begin this year. Clarkson is also hosting more Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? for ITV.

The Times interviewer Ed Potton wrote that he was told not to ask Clarkson about his reviled The Sun newspaper column about Meghan Markle. Clarkson wrote that he imagines the day Markle is paraded “naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.” The piece was retracted and Amazon made clear its fury at the article.

Asked if he feels under pressure to be controversial, Clarkson said: “No! I like being controversial. Some people who see a still pond find that peaceful, but I cannot resist throwing a stone in it.”

"The Grand Tour" reaches the end of the road on Sept. 13

Viknesh Vijayenthiran

  • James May, Jeremy Clarkson, and Richard Hammond will finally disband
  • The trio's final episode of "The Grand Tour" airs on Sept. 13
  • The trio have worked together for 22 years

After eight years together on Amazon Prime's “ The Grand Tour ,” Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May are about to hit the road for one final time.

And for many fans, the time spent watching the trio goes back to the early 2000s, when they formerly hosted “Top Gear.” In total, Clarkson, Hammond, and May have hosted car shows together for a period spanning 22 years .

The final episode of the The Grand Tour starring the trio will be streamed on Sept. 13 . It will be a one-off special, and from the looks of a teaser trailer released on Thursday, there will be a variety of locations.

Amazon hasn't said whether the show will continu e with new hosts, like Top Gear has. However, a social media post by Clarkson last year indicated that the show will indeed end after 2024. He said at the time, “no more Grand Tour after [2024].”

The Grand Tour first appeared on Amazon Prime in 2016 but went on hiatus after 2021 due to difficulties in filming new episodes caused by pandemic-related travel restrictions, resulting in only five seasons being filmed over the eight years, with the final two seasons each containing only four episodes. Amazon Prime originally snagged Clarkson for the show, together with Hammond and May, after Clarkson was fired from the BBC due to his 2015 attack on a fellow Top Gear staff member.

The Grand Tour proved to be a hit on Amazon Prime, which led to all three hosts getting standalone shows on the streaming service. They include “Clarkson's Farm” which provides snippets of Clarkson's life on his farm in the Cotswolds. Hammond's show is called “The Great Escapists,” and features both him and Tory Belleci as as fictionalized versions of themselves, and May has the show “James May: Our Man in…,” a travel show where May focuses on adventures across a single country per season.

The Grand Tour: The American Mike Skinner Explains Exactly Why He Left

Mike Skinner has had quite an exciting career, from being teammates with Dale Earnhardt in the Cup Series to dominating the Truck Series, he has done everything in  NASCAR . However, fans of The Grand Tour know him as The American .

Mike took us back to where it all began in a recent interview with Grand Tour Nation, he said:

“I got a call from Andy [Wilman], and he wanted to come up and sit down and talk to Angie and I. So Andy flew in and drove up here, and we sat right here and met, and we had a conversation, and he said we’re interested in doing a screen test with you if you’d be interested.

And he explained to me what we were gonna do and what the character was, and basically, my character was to be a grumpy old NASCAR driver, retired NASCAR driver, that hated everything British or European; I just loved American muscle, and that was it.

Skinner was then told that he would become more prevalent in the episodes and have more screen time alongside Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond, and James May .

“Hard to interest me in anything else, and I’m like, okay, I’ll play along with that. And I said, where is it going to go? And he said we’re going to develop your character, and eventually we’re going to have you intermingling more with the guys, and what are your hobbies?

“And I said, well I play the guitar, I’m not very good at it, and he goes, play me something. So we’re going to have you sitting around every once in a while doing stuff like that and just developing your character, and I’m like, okay, I’ll do that.”

Mike Skinner

With promises of developing his character, Skinner began shooting with The Grand Tour .

He said the following: “So we went over there, and we had some really good shoots. We had some funny stuff. I mean, some of the stuff was my own material; a lot of it was scripted.

“And it seemed like they didn’t have time to do our segments the way I felt that they should be done and we kind of rushed things. I went all the way over there for a one day shoot one time. And that too far to travel to do one day’s work, and we tried to cram two or three shows into one day.”

on grand tour

He continued:

“I went, you know, they are more focused on dropping people out of the sky and the hokey pokey stuff than what I thought the show should be about, what it is, and I’m not the one that tells them how to do their show.

“And so we all mutually decided that I wasn’t going to come back for the next year, and I decided that there was something better for me to do.”

After one season, The American left the show for good. Mike Skinner has now returned to doing his radio show, Skinner Round-Up that he hosts with his wife, Angie. NASCAR fans can tune in on SiriusXM NASCAR radio to get the latest updates on the sport and enjoy segments like Skinners Garage and Celebrity Drive-By .

Featuring luminous black-and-white 16mm cinematography—interspersed with dazzling colour passages—and a considered engagement with silent-era techniques, it is a film that revels in the storytelling pleasures that only cinema can offer.

Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat

In January 1961, seven months after Congolese independence, Patrice Lumumba is assassinated. In excavating the history of this political murder, this essay-film traces the complex and unlikely intersections of American jazz and Cold War geopolitics.

Secret Mall Apartment

The stranger-than-fiction true story of a group of artists who built and furnished a hidden apartment inside a mall, remaining undetected for years. This is an absurdly fun and surprisingly profound film about gentrification and art.

A Different Man

This haunting, unclassifiable film tells the story of a facially disfigured man who is cured by a new drug therapy and given a new lease on life. Director Aaron Schimberg fuses elements of horror, melodrama, and comedy into a work of true originality.

A prizewinner at Cannes, the latest from the director of Tabu is a playful Asian travelogue, set in 1918 and now, in black and white and colour, a critique of colonialism, and a journey into the history of cinema itself.

This cheeky, inventive film brings contemporary pop music to 17th century Italy. It’s the story of a Catholic orphanage where the girls have been taught to play orchestral music. Little does the priest know they’re composing their own tunes in secret…

Set in a city on the verge of demolition, the award-winning Black Dog tells the story of a discontented ex-con and the stray dog he comes to love. Graced with panoramic imagery and the music of Pink Floyd, it’s a soulful, triumphant film.

Sharp Corner

This superb psychological thriller stars Ben Foster as Josh, a man who comes unmoored from the safety of middle-class life. The problems start with a car accident in front of his new house, and soon our protagonist is on the verge of losing everything…

Caught by the Tides

Over two decades, across China’s rapidly changing landscape, two lovers meet and part and meet again. In this magisterial film, Jia Zhangke refracts the twenty-first century through a reflexive, retrospective look at his era-defining filmography.

Neo Sora (Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus) fuses teen high school comedy and political protest to winning effect in this raucous, creative, and poignant "story of the near future." It features earthquakes, digital surveillance, thumping techno music, and more...

No Other Land

For Basel Adra, a Palestinian activist from the southern West Bank, the fight against the mass expulsion of his community has been a lifelong struggle. Filmed vérité-style over five years, this is a sobering look at the realities of Israeli occupation.

Universal Language

In a wintery, Farsi-speaking city that’s equal measures Winnipeg and Tehran, storylines entangle and the concepts of space, time, and identity grow increasingly opaque. Inventive and absurd, Rankin's poetic fable reminds us that Winnipeg is a wonderland.

Matt and Mara

Featuring terrific performances from Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson, this is a film that buzzes with vitality. In exploring the fraught, ambiguous relationship between two writers, director Kazik Radwanski produces indelible, deeply relatable moments.

In this wordless and gorgeously atmospheric animated feature, a solitary black cat survives a tsunami and must confront his fear of water whilst sailing through a flooded world with a group of misfit animals. An enchanting adventure film for all ages.

The return of stolen cultural artifacts to the Republic of Benin is the inspiration for Mati Diop's Berlin Golden Bear prize winner, which fuses dreamy metaphysics and incendiary political commentary on issues of restitution and self-determination.

Paying For It

Sook-Yin Lee adapts a graphic novel by her ex-boyfriend Chester Brown about the end of their relationship and Brown’s decision to start paying for sex. Brave, bracing, and funny, this is a film unafraid to explore sexuality in all its complexity.

Mathyas abruptly quits his marketing job in Montreal and goes to France with the romantic notion of becoming a shepherd. He's in for a rude awakening... Sophie Deraspe’s film is an elemental epic of personal growth.

Blue Sun Palace

In the heart of Flushing, New York’s largest Chinatown, three working-class immigrants eke out a meager living. When together, there's an easy intimacy—until tragedy strikes, leaving a painful absence in its wake.

With death looming for both elders of the Lunies clan, their estranged children are forced to meet once more, while dealing with their own tumultuous personal lives. Age-old enmities resurface in this raw and invigorating family saga.

A Traveler's Needs

Isabelle Huppert and VIFF mainstay Hong Sangsoo reunite for a whimsical, winning tale of culture-clash. She plays a French tutor at large in a South Korean city; he deploys his usual mixture of suggestive repetition, oddball humour, and humble profundity.
