Swiss Automotive Masterpiece: A Detailed Look At The Monteverdi Safari
The Safari is considered one of the fastest SUVs of its time due to its light weight and Monteverdi's engineering brilliance.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Peter Monteverdi made his name as a racecar driver, building, selling, and even racing a number of “specials” known as MBM (Monteverdi Basel Motoren), the first Swiss Formula One car. He only raced in Formula One once, at the Solitude Grand Prix in 1961, where he retired after two laps and immediately withdrew his entry for the German Grand Prix after being hurt in a previous race. After that, he stopped competing in races.
At the same time, he was busy growing his father’s auto repair business into a significant dealership that handled Ferrari, BMW, and Lancia brands. In 1963, Monteverdi’s association with Ferrari came to an end when Enzo Ferrari asked that Monteverdi pay for a shipment of 100 automobiles in advance, which Monteverdi refused.
By 1967, he had made the decision to start mass-producing high-performance luxury sports and touring cars. He started with GT vehicles, such as the famous 375/S developed by Frua and later modified by Fissore, the 375/4, the legendary 1970s hyper limo, the incredible supercar Hai, and, last but not least, the SUVs Sahara and Safari. The Monteverdi Safari was produced between 1977 and 1982 and quickly became the brand’s best-selling model, with production hitting triple digits in 1979, with 350 cars, and large SUVs, made.

The Monteverdi Safari Engineering Masterpiece: Engine Specification
The engines were originally Monteverdi from Chrysler; however, in the safari’s final years of manufacturing, conventional engines from International Harvester were utilized. From 1976 to 1978, Chrysler offered a 5.2-liter eight-cylinder engine with 160 horsepower. From 1976 to 1977, an expanded 5.9-liter version of this engine with 180 horsepower was also available.
In place of the 5.9 liter engine, a 7.2 liter eight-cylinder with 305-hp was chosen to start in 1978. The Safari was one of Europe’s most motorized SUVs and, because of its lighter weight than American competitors such as the Plymouth Trailduster and Chevrolet Blazer, it was considered one of the quickest road automobiles of its day. Only seven pieces of the 7.2-liter variant were made. They were mostly sold to Middle Eastern clients.
The fact that all Safaris had automatic transmissions gave the car an advantage over the Range Rover , which was only available with a sluggish manual transmission until 1982. This, combined with improved road manners and a more relaxed driving posture inspired by Monteverdi’s GT cars, made the Safari a much better choice for interstate cruising without sacrificing its ability to tackle less-traveled routes.

The Monteverdi Safari Is Quite Luxurious
One of the first luxury off-roaders was the Monteverdi Safari. The exotic moniker gave a basic International Scout 44, clad in Italian style house metal, a boudoir interior, and a boutique price tag, extra mystique.
The Monteverdi Safari used a proven US drivetrain and engine in the practical but dumpy design of the International Scout, following the successful Euro–US hybrid pattern . Fissore handled the tailoring once more, this time designing a sloped, narrow pillared two-door body with a wide glass area and a European face with quad lights and a crisp grille that screamed Italia. Peugeot's taillights and a split folding tailgate gave it a Range Rover arse with a Gallic flavor. Interiors were equally sumptuous, with a choice of leather or velour trim – or both if your pocketbook or heart wished – despite some Scout equipment being carried over.
There were only seven Safaris built to this specification. Monteverdi had created a luxury 444 with a guaranteed exclusivity, ideal for transporting kinder from finishing school to Verbier or for use as a customized falconry horse by oil-rich sheiks.
The last Safari was produced between 1977 and 1982, the same year that Solihull management decided to add four doors to its classic 444 – some four years after Monteverdi began a pleasant little earner by turning the two door Range Rover into a luxury leather clad four door model (rebranded as a Monteverdi).
Even while the Safari isn’t the most beautiful European coach-built classic , there’s something unquestionably cool about Monteverdi’s mountain truck, even if it is a lowly Scout underneath.
The Monteverdi Safari: A Luxury Vehicle That’s Worth Every Penny
The Safari, like all Monteverdi automobiles, prioritize performance. The 318 V8’s highest speed was 103mph, and it took just 13.1 seconds to go from 0 to 62 mph. A test specimen from 1977 achieved 9.4 miles per gallon, indicating that such performance came at a cost. The 440 V8 variants had a top speed of 124 miles per hour and a fuel economy of half that of the 318.
Monteverdi purchased enough Scout chassis to keep Safari manufacture ongoing until 1982, despite the Scout’s demise after 1980. Monteverdi’s previous SUV offering was the Safari, but it won’t be the last time we see the marque here.
Despite the company’s history as a supercar maker, the domestic market price of CHF 39,000 in 1977 was only CHF 5,000 more than the less well-equipped Range Rover. There were few luxury SUVs available in Europe at the time, and while the Safari’s sales were dwarfed by the Range Rover’s, they were strong when compared to the company’s other models aimed at the upper end of the Maserati/Ferrari class. Today’s Rare Ride is a 1981 IH V8-powered example. It’s for sale in the Netherlands for $60,000 in restored condition.

The Monteverdi Safari was a mythical SUV beast made in Switzerland

The 4-door prototype of the Monteverdi Safari pictured here recently roamed its way into the showroom of Swiss dealer Andreas Wüest , having started life in 1979 as one of the more extensively equipped off-roaders created by Monteverdi for people who considered Land Rover's attempt at luxury, the Range Rover, to be not quite luxury enough.

Rare Rides: The Incredibly Rare 1981 Monteverdi Safari, an International Delight

We’re back again with more Monteverdi today, and I’m determined the Rare Rides series will cover all of Monteverdi’s vehicular offerings. European design, American power, and Swiss attention to detail combined with very high prices to make all the company’s models Rare Rides.
We’ve covered two earlier Monteverdi offerings previously, in the 1970 High Speed 375/4 sedan, and the 1971 High Speed 375/L grand touring coupe. Today we head into luxury SUV territory with the Safari.
Mister Monteverdi founded his brand in the mid-Sixties and began a product portfolio with the previously featured High Speed cars in two- and four-door varieties. But the High Speed line aged out of existence by the late Seventies, down to a combination of changing safety regulations, emissions requirements, slow sales, and (most painfully) the eventual discontinuation of the Monteverdi favorite Chrysler big-block V8.

Monteverdi needed a new direction, and fast. Turning away from the bespoke car market, Monteverdi issued a couple of all-new products by the end of the Seventies. Said products were sourced from other automakers, rebodied, and then slathered with Swiss luxury accouterments. The first of this new product direction to debut was the Safari.
Shown at the Euro auto shows in 1976, the Safari wore a boxy body designed by Fissore – a name you may recall from the LaForza presented here previously. Available only in three-door guise, all examples were four-wheel drive and powered by the last of Chrysler’s 440 V8, the 318 V8 from the Dodge Diplomat, or the 345 V8 from International Harvester. Unlike European SUVs of the time, the Safari was available only as a three-speed automatic. The new Safari entered production in Switzerland in 1977.

That IH power was a clue to Safari’s bones: At its heart, the new luxury SUV was a Scout II. Monteverdi was at the forefront of European luxury SUV offerings with Safari, as at the time the Range Rover was still largely a bare-bones utility vehicle, and the G-Wagen did not yet exist. Safari’s interior was trimmed in Switzerland, and the truck had a higher level of equipment than Range Rover. Accordingly, it was slightly more expensive than the Range Rover, which made it the most expensive SUV available. Unique in the class, Safari’s optional rear jump seats meant it sat six passengers in luxurious comfort.
As with all Monteverdi cars, the Safari focused on performance. With the 318 V8, top speed was 103 miles per hour, and 0 to 62 took just 13.1 seconds. The price of such performance was reflected at the pump, where a test example from 1977 achieved 9.4 miles per gallon. Buyers of the 440 V8 version experienced a top speed of 124 miles per hour, and half the fuel economy of the 318.

Monteverdi bought up enough Scout chassis to continue Safari production through 1982, though the Scout passed away after 1980. Safari was the last SUV offering from Monteverdi, but it won’t be the last time we present the brand here.
Today’s Rare Ride is a 1981 example, powered by the IH V8. In restored condition, it’s for sale in the Netherlands for $60,000.

There was also the cheaper Sahara, which was just a clip update on the actual Scout body! Not available until later, and cancelled before Safari.

This isn't really a new body on a Scout II chassis, it is a Scout II with a new skin blended in from the body line up. The dash is an overlay of the original steel unit with that row of controls on either side of the steering column being where the original shows through. Would love to have one, where else are you going to find an exotic European car with the parts in stock at your local auto parts store.

The Monteverdi Safari Is The Swiss Range Rover You Never Knew Existed
The luxury coachbuilt SUV was built around International Harvester Chassis and running gear

by Chris Chilton

The original Range Rover and Jeep Wagoneer were the go-to, go-anywhere luxury cars in the 1970s before the world went SUV crazy.
But they weren’t the only options. Buyers looking for something a little more bespoke but with the same off-load ability might have found themselves making fast friends with Swiss entrepreneur Peter Monteverdi.
Moneteverdi made a stack of money selling Ferraris , BMWs and Lancias in his native Switzerland before a falling out with Enzo led him to have a go at making his own high-powered GTs and supercars, stuffing handcrafted Italian bodies with Chrysler V8s.
advertisement scroll to continue
But living in one of Europe’s most mountainous regions, Monteverdi was perfectly placed to see the appeal of a vehicle that had all the handcrafted luxury of something like a Maserati , but mated with all-wheel drive ability.

His first attempt was the Monteverdi Sahara, which was basically just a very mildly restyled International Harvester Scout fitted with a new grille and more luxurious interior. The Safari that followed was also based on the Scout, but this time it featured bespoke coachwork from Turin-based Fissore, who had previously provided bodies for Monteverdi’s 1960s does-what-says-on-the-tin High Speed grand tourer.
The Safari cost a little more than a Range Rover , but as Classic Driver explains in this article about the five-door Safari prototype, the Swiss car had several key advantages over the Brit, including a larger V8, an automatic transmission, and the ability to disengage all-wheel drive.
Not that Monteverdi couldn’t see merit in the Land Rover SUV, or understand why some buyers might still want one. But he knew it could be made better, and created a tidy business out of adding back doors to Range Rovers until Land Rover finally got around to building them itself in the early 1980s.
The Safari isn’t the most beautiful European coachbuilt classic, but even with the knowledge that there’s a humble Scout underneath, there’s something undeniably cool about Monterverdi’s mountain truck. And just check out the TV in the back of the five-door.
It looks like that five-door one-off might have already sold, but Swiss classic car dealer Andy Wüest still has a silver three-door on offer for CHF 79,900 ($85,800/£64,500).

In every story about the beginning of off-road vehicle popularity on US soil, Jeep CJ-5 and Ford Bronco get all the credits. However, in those early years of the SUV segment, when SUVs were really (outdoor) sport utility vehicles, there was one more important member of the crew, which, sadly, never lived long enough to see SUVs class dominance. Maybe you guessed which legendary off-roader we are talking about. Yes, the 4×4 in question is the 1961 to 1980 International Scout.
Introduced before the Bronco or Blazer, Scout was Jeep`s first real archenemy. Presented in 1961, Scout was very advanced in design and engineering and was much matured and usable than the CJ-5. Over the years, it became synonymous with the small off-roader class and even managed to be pretty popular and respected in export markets. It was ahead of its time, and we often wonder if the car industry would be different if the Scout stayed around a bit longer.
The Origin of the International Scout

Greg Gjerdingen from Willmar, USA, CC BY 2.0 via Wikimedia Commons
Most of you will recognize the company name, and International Harvester had been a significant player in the truck industry since 1907. However, in the early `50s, the International introduced a competitor to Chevrolet Suburban in the form of Travelall and then a full-size pickup with the same mechanics. After significant success, International was considering moving further into the passenger car market, but they needed a sellable product.
The solution was found in a small, all-terrain, fun vehicle called Scout. Presented in 1961, Scout was about the same size as the Jeep CJ-5 but featured a more modern, boxy design, a wide range of engines, from four to six-cylinder, and even a V8 option. It was affordable, dependable, and well-built and showed that 4×4 vehicles are not only meant for working or military service but can be used for fun camping weekends and trips to the beach.
The First Generation 1961 – 1971
When the Scout was first shown to the public, only one version was available called Scout 80. It was a small pickup truck with a removable glass fiber roof and a small truck bed behind the front seats. The base engine was a little, 2.5-liter four-cylinder and standard four-wheel-drive.

Dutchtower, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
Scout 80 was produced until 1965, and it was a pretty basic model with no luxury features, simple mechanics, and even a fold-down windshield. However, in 1965, due to market demand, International introduced Scout 800. This was an improved model in every way and featured more options, a choice of straight-six and V8 engine, better trim designs, and optional rear seats. If the Scout 80 was a workhorse model, the Scout 800 was much closer to what we now consider an SUV or lifestyle off-roader.
Besides the standard four-cylinder with 93 hp, optional six-cylinder with 120 hp, and two V8s, International offered a very interesting engine option from 1965 to 1968. It was the turbocharged four-cylinder “Comanche” engine with 111 hp. The four-cylinder was equipped with forced induction for slightly better performance and fuel consumption based on the standard unit. Not many were built, and it is overshadowed by much more powerful V8 units. Still, it is an immensely exciting option which shows how foreseeing the International engineers were back in the day.

CarsonTosta, CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia Commons
The 800 A and 800 B models were built between 1968 and 1971 and marked the first-gen Scout end. Again, those were slightly improved versions of the original design with more equipment and even some unique trim packages.

The Second Generation – Scout II
The 1971 model year saw the release of all-new and more advanced Scout II. By the early `70s, Scout was not fighting just the Jeep models, but also Ford Bronco, Chevrolet Blazer, Dodge Ramcharger, and Plymouth Trailduster, not to forget the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. So, the SUV market was established, and Scout was one of the key players.

Southafrica2010, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
The engine options were more or less the same, and the range started with a 196 cubic-inch four-cylinder, followed by two six-cylinders (232 and 258 cubic-inch) and two V8s (304 and 345 cubic-inch). Interestingly, the International offered two diesel options in the late `70s, and Scout II used Nissan-made 3.3-liter diesel six-cylinder engines with or without the turbocharger. Diesel-powered Scouts were popular in export markets outside the USA.
Seeing that the SUV market is moving towards bigger and more luxurious models, International introduced the Terra and Traveler models. Those upscale versions of the Scouts II were offered from 1976 to 1980 and featured stretched body for more interior room, luxury trim, and a full-length fiberglass roof with a third-door hatch in the back.

Mr.choppers, CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia Commons
At the same time, International didn’t forget about the hard-core off-road market and presented the stripped-down version called SS II (Super Scout II). It was a direct Jeep CJ-5 competitor with removable plastic inserts that mimicked the doors, roll-bar, revised suspension, wing mirrors, and plastic grille, and so on. It was pretty basic but extremely capable on the trail.

Monteverdi Safari International Scout
A very interesting part of the Scout legend is Monteverdi Safari, built from 1977 to 1982. If you don’t know what Monteverdi is, we cannot blame you. It is an obscure Swiss luxury-car manufacturer active during the `70s.

By Charles01 – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia Commons
Peter Monteverdi, the owner, realized that he needed an upscale SUV to compete with Range Rover, so he bought a number of Scouts and turned them into Monteverdi Safaris or Saharas. The Safari featured V8 engines and totally revised interior and exterior, but Saharas were lower trim and still looked like Scouts. Monteverdi installed every luxury item and even had Chrysler`s V8 option for most discriminating buyers.
Of course, not many were built, but this just shows that Scout`s appeal was really global.

The Monteverdi Safari is an off-road vehicle of the Swiss car manufacturer Monteverdi, which was produced between 1976 and 1982. The trigger for the development of the Safari was the first oil crisis in the mid-1970s, as a result of which the sale of large, expensive sports cars collapsed. This also applied to Monteverdi's 1968 produced High Speed 375 series, of which in 1974 a little more than 30 copies and a year later even only 20 vehicles were sold.
Peter Monteverdi developed the Safari in the course of the year 1975. He took up the basic concept of the Range Rover, whose layout and dimensions he essentially took over for his own SUV. The Safari used far more technical components than the High Speed 375 series from mass production. As a result, the development and production costs were significantly reduced, so that the selling price was noticeably lower than in the previous, completely self-developed by Monteverdi sports car. Nevertheless, the safari was still a high-priced car. In 1980 the list price of a Safari was around 65,000 DM. During the production cycle, various engine variants were offered such as a 5.2 liter / 5.7 liter / 5.9 liter eight-cylinder, but also a 7.2-liter eight-cylinder Chrysler 440 Magnum Big Block, which at 305PS at the time was the fastest off-road vehicle of its time. From the 7.2-liter version only seven examples were manufactured. They were mainly sold to customers in the Middle East. Vehicles of this type were mostly withheld only super-rich or prominent such as the Shah of Persia or Gunter Sachs and various former Formula 1 drivers.
This Motor Car Monteverdi Safari V8 7,2L #4972
The vehicle offered here is Monteverdi Safari # 4972, 1 of only 7 manufactured with the 7.2 liter V8-cylinder Chrysler Big Block Magnum 440 engine. The first owner acquired this example on 16th June 1978 as an absolute new vehicle from Auto Becker in Dusseldorf, which comes directly from Automobile Monteverdi Basel, Binningen. The car captivates by a very good color combination "grünmetallisé" outside, beige corduroy interior with black carpets. Shortly after delivery extra underbody protection and thus cavity wax was applied, which is in absolutely rust-free condition. The car comes directly from the first owner, so 40 years in the possession of a person who has also taken care of the maintenance and preservation. The body is in original paint, the interior is 100% original. The mileage since delivery in 1978 is 51,500km and is verifiable by an extensive service history.
It is certainly a unique opportunity to acquire a Monteverdi Safari with the 7.2 liter engine in this state of conservation. The demand for classic off-road vehicles such as Range Rover, Defender and Lamborghini LM002 is compressed in recent years and downward trend is not in sight. Certainly the most exclusive offroad car is available.
