Michael Jackson musical, 'MJ', sets March 2024 West End opening

The Michael Jackson musical will begin performances at the Prince Edward Theatre in spring 2024. The show won four Tony Awards, including Best Choreography.

This is definitely thrilling news. The Michael Jackson musical, MJ , will begin performances at the Prince Edward Theatre on 6 Mar. 2024, with an opening night on 27 Mar. 2024.

MJ centres around rehearsals for Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World tour. As Jackson sings, he gradually reveals his memories and key moments in his career come to life.

In a five-star review on New York Theatre Guide , they said: “While Jackson's story is flawed, it's too complicated for anyone who hasn't danced in his shoes. MJ The Musical , however, is the perfect salutation to the life of an imperfect but gifted icon.”

MJ opened at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre in December 2021 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost, Best Choreography, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical.

Casting for MJ in London will be revealed at a later date. Lynn Nottage writes MJ, with direction and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, design by Derek McLane, costume design by Paul Tazewell, and sound design by Gareth Owen.

‘Sanitised’ new musical about Michael Jackson to open in London

MJ the Musical, based around the making of the singer’s 1992-93 Dangerous world tour, won four Tony awards in New York

A new musical about Michael Jackson that has been feted in New York yet criticised for its “inherent ickiness” and “sanitised” approach to the singer’s life, is to open in London.

MJ the Musical , which was nominated for 10 Tony awards and won in four categories, is written by the Pulitzer prize winner Lynn Nottage and choreographed and directed by Britain’s Christopher Wheeldon. The show is based around the making of Jackson’s 1992-93 world tour to promote his chart-topping album Dangerous.

Nottage said that “as a Black musician and a pioneering voice in the music industry, Michael Jackson demanded inclusion, broke incredible barriers and … made indelible music”. The writer added that she was drawn to his “complicated, singular and uncompromising creative process, and to understand where, why and how he made his music”. Wheeldon similarly stated that the musical is an exploration of Jackson’s “artistic mind” and “creative process”. He added: “It has offered us the opportunity to put one of the greatest catalogues of pop music ever written up on stage in a show that combines the thrill and energy of a Michael Jackson concert with a glimpse into a pivotal moment of his pioneering career.” The show features songs from Dangerous, such as Black or White and Jam, as well as Jackson’s earlier hits including Billie Jean and Smooth Criminal.

When the show opened in New York in February, the Guardian’s Adrian Horton considered it “a rollicking parade of hits and vocal high points” as well as a “sanitised spin” through his life and a “dubious proposition” in light of the allegations against Jackson of child sexual abuse, including those detailed in the 2019 HBO documentary Leaving Neverland . (The Michael Jackson estate, which co-produced the musical, has vehemently denied all allegations; Jackson was acquitted of child molestation in 2005.)

The New York Times’s Jesse Green wrote that the musical’s lead star, Myles Frost, who won a Tony for his performance, was “a real find” and that the production opened with verve and confidence but disintegrated in the second half when “the pleasure that compensated for its inherent ickiness can no longer do the job. MJ becomes a grind of obfuscation, a case of wilfully not looking at the man in the mirror.”

Casting has not yet been confirmed for the London production of MJ, which opens at the Prince Edward theatre in the West End in March 2024. Tickets will go on sale in spring next year. The Jackson tribute musical Thriller Live ended its 11-year run in the West End in 2020.

The new, splashy Broadway musical about Michael Jackson is going to moonwalk across America next year.

“MJ,” packed with dozens of songs by the King of Pop and others, plans to hit 17 major cities over two years starting in 2023. It kicks off in Chicago at the James M. Nederlander Theatre on July 15, 2023.

“We are thrilled by the Broadway response to ‘MJ,’ and that we are already deep in preparations to bring this exhilarating show to Chicago and across the United States," said co-producer Lia Vollack in a statement. "Chicago is a premier theater and music destination, and we are excited to be able to begin this journey in one of the Nederlander Organization’s most beautiful venues.”

Additional tour engagements and complete cast will be announced at a later date. The tour will also include a previously revealed two-week engagement at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, from Sept. 26-Oct. 8, 2023.

The musical has most of Jackson's and the Jackson 5's big hits, including “ABC,” “Black or White,” “Blame it on the Boogie,” “Bad,” “Billie Jean,” “Off the Wall,” “Thriller” and “I’ll Be There.”

The framing technique for the bio is a fictional MTV film crew that has gotten access to capture Jackson’s 1992 “Dangerous” tour prep. Jackson melts back in time to explain his career and approach, showing a perfectionist edge. It is the work of playwright Lynn Nottage and director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. The musical has been approved by the Michael Jackson estate; Jackson died in 2009.

Broadway critics were divided over the musical, with many frustrated that it sidestepped accusations of molestation, which later dogged Jackson. But virtually all agreed that the songs and dancing were top-notch, as was the leading man, Myles Frost.
