Is Kalamazoo haunted? Popular walking tour makes the case
- Published: Oct. 31, 2023, 8:49 a.m.
- Aya Miller | [email protected]
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Some of Kalamazoo’s most prominent places are haunted, according to a popular walking tour.
Paranormal Michigan has been giving haunted tours in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids for the past 11 years. The Kalamazoo tour is based on the 2009 book “ Haunted History of Kalamazoo ” by Nicole Bray and Robert DuShane.
“We put up flyers through downtown Kalamazoo at the cafe assuming ‘No one’s going to pay a ticket or anything like that,’” said Bray, a co-host of the tour. “And we ended up selling out, like, right away.”
The Haunted History of Kalamazoo Tour has taken groups of participants around downtown Kalamazoo on Saturday nights throughout the fall. While public tours are finished for the season, people can still book a private tour year-round for $200 for up to 10 people.
On the tour, participants go on a 1-mile, two-hour journey. Each tour guide portrays a member of Kalamazoo’s past, according to the tour website.
There are roughly a dozen stops on the tour. Stories include a music legend who roams the Radisson Hotel, “the ghost of Thelma” and the dark past of Bronson Park.
At Bronson Park, it’s not entirely clear what apparition haunts the space. It could be Titus Bronson, or a victim of the historic cannon displayed in the park or a motorcyclist who died in the 1980 Kalamazoo tornado, according to “Haunted History of Kalamazoo.”
The Rosenbaum Building and the Fifth Third Bank building are among other stops on the tour.
Bray said their tours attract crowds because they’re about more than haunted experiences. A year of research goes into developing each tour, Bray said.
“We’re not just giving out a story people have heard over and over again from the internet,” Bray said.
One haunted area in Kalamazoo County that surprises people is the Celery Flats Historical Area, 7355 Garden Lane in Portage, Bray said. While it’s not part of the walking tour, the walking trails are open year-round.
Stuart Manor, constructed in 1846, and the schoolhouse, constructed in 1856, are two hubs of activity at the park, Bray said. Bray said they’ve noticed activity in the upstairs bedroom areas of Stuart Manor. The spirit haunting the area is rumored to be Charles Stuart, Michigan’s second U.S. Senator, Bray said.
Paranormal Michigan hopes to expand beyond its Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids walking tours in 2024. Bray is hoping to plan tours in South Haven and in Southwest Michigan cemeteries next year.
To keep up with the latest tour plans, follow Paranormal Michigan on Facebook .

Tens of thousands of ancient coins have been found off Sardinia. They may be spoils of a shipwreck
A diver who spotted something metallic not far from Sardinia’s coast has led to the discovery of tens of thousands of ancient bronze coins

ROME -- A diver who spotted something metallic not far from Sardinia's coast has led to the discovery of tens of thousands of ancient bronze coins.
Italy’s culture ministry said Saturday that the diver alerted authorities, who sent divers assigned to an art protection squad along with others from the ministry’s undersea archaeology department.
The coins dating from the first half of the fourth century were found in sea grass, not far from the northeast shore of the Mediterranean island. The ministry didn't say exactly when the first diver caught a glimpse of something metallic just off shore Sardinia, not far from the town of Arzachena.
Exactly how many coins have been retrieved hasn’t been determined yet, as they are being sorted. A ministry statement estimated that there are at least about 30,000 and possibly as many as 50,000, given their collective weight.
“All the coins were in an excellent and rare state of preservation,” the ministry said. The few coins that were damaged still had legible inscriptions, it said.
“The treasure found in the waters off Arzachena represent one of the most important coin discoveries," in recent years, said Luigi La Rocca, a Sardinian archaeology department official.
La Rocca added in a statement that the find is “further evidence of the richness and importance of the archaeological heritage that the seabed of our seas, crossed by men and goods from the most ancient of epochs, still keep and preserve.”
Firefighter divers and border police divers were also involved in locating and retrieving the coins.
The coins were mainly found in a wide area of sand between the underwater seagrass and the beach, the ministry said. Given the location and shape of the seabed, there could be remains of ship wreckage nearby, the ministry said.

Walking Tour in Sardinia
Sardinia coast to coast.
This 8-day, 7-night walking tour in Sardinia starts in Cagliari, the Jerusalem of Sardinia, heads east to a delightful coastal hamlet and joins the breath-taking Selvaggio Blu (Wild Blue) trail – the most challenging in the Mediterranean. Selvaggio Blu will give you a heady dose of nature, of scents and colours that will stay in your system for a long time.

Our walking tour in Sardinia will follow the Selvaggio Blu walking path where no ropes are needed. Days 3, 4 and 5 will be challenging: 1 night in a Mountain Refuge, 1 night in a tent on the beach with outdoor showers, and activity level 5.
In addition to ‘standard’ walking equipment, you will need to bring: a light backpack, trekking poles, water bottle, sun hat, sunglasses, sun cream, windproof jacket (Sardinia can be very windy!), cagoule, sleeping-bag and a small towel. Wake-up time is around 7:30 am.

Setting off at sunrise, you follow the gorgeous, gentle coastline up to Pietra Longa for a breath-taking view of the faraglioni rock formations and then up to the Us Pigus and Bacu Tenosili gullies. As you ascend, with the tang of the sea all around you, juniper sheepfolds will come into view. During the day, when you reach the Golgo heights, your reward is the incomparable scenery below.
Mobile phone reception is patchy, and no water is available along the trail, so remember to fill your water bottles in S. Maria Navarrese. Days 3, 4 and 5 may be changed around or modified according to sea and weather conditions.
Activity level: 5 (1 km uphill, 400 m downhill)
Walk: 18 km
Midday meal: packed lunch
Dinner: Sardinian specialities at Rifugio Golgo (Golgo mountain refuge)
Night: Rifugio Golgo in double or multi-bed rooms
Golgo to Cala Sisine
You leave the Golgo refuge to visit the Chiesa di San Pietro, standing alone on the Golgo plateau amid ancient olive trees. This modest, late 16 th century church, with its striking whitewashed façade, is flanked by cumbessias – rough, open stone structures that traditionally hosted local festivities and, before that, pilgrims.

You follow Via del Carbone, the road once used to transport coal, and the riverbed of Torrente Codula Sisine to the stunning Cala Sisine bay. You’ll be impressed by the gorges and on reaching Cala Sisine … you’re suddenly facing the sea. A small camping area provides hot water and a safe place to put up your tents. It looks out onto the fine white sand and water in various shades of blue, from palest aqua to dark turquoise. At the southern end, bizarrely shaped limestone formations soar away from the cliffside.
Enjoy the sea breeze as you stroll on the bay’s white sands. Take a breather and lap up the view!
Activity level: 5 (100 m uphill, 480 m downhill)
Dinner: at the night camp
Night: tents (two-person) and camping mattresses provided by the organisation, showers available at the campsite
From Cala Sisine to Cala Luna with transfer to S. Maria Navarrese by boat or jeep
From the campsite, you head for the left slope of Cala Sisine bay to climb back up to the cliff’s edge, glimpsing the sea through juniper bushes. Then Bacu Lopiro – an astonishing natural hole 20 metres in diameter ̶ you have to take a picture! At Cala Luna (Moon Bay), there’s a beachside café, where you can relax with a drink before returning to S. Maria Navarrese by boat. The 45-minute boat trip is superb: you’ll look back at the whole coast, including the bays you walked across during your Ogliastra experience. If sea conditions do not allow transfer by boat, return by jeep or alternative means will be organised.

Activity level: 5 (600 m uphill, 600 m downhill)
Walk: 16 km
Dinner: Hotel Santa Maria
Night: Hotel Santa Maria
Santa Maria Navarrese to Cabras through the town of Ulassai
This is a transfer day (2.5 hrs) from the east coast passing through central Sardinia to the west coast. Our first stop is the Stazione dell’Arte, a converted railway station at Ulassai dedicated to the work of native artist Maria Lai, known for installations such as Sewing up the world and Capturing the wind . Maria’s works were exhibited at the 2017 Venice Biennale.
Then our walking tour in Sardinia continues westwards across central Sardinia up to Cabras in the Gulf of Oristano. The gulf is enclosed to the north by Cape San Marco, on the Sinis Peninsula, and to the south by Cape Frasca and is dotted with massive ponds, including the Stagno di Cabras and Stagno di Mistras. The Stagno di Cabras has a surface area of 2,200 hectares and has been privately owned since 1982. Today the ponds comprise some of the most important wetlands in Europe and have been declared a European Community Interest Zone. The wetlands have another quality: the special intensity of the light.

Activity level: 1
Midday meal: along the road
Culture: Stazione dell’Arte
Dinner: Da Pinuccia
Night: Aquae Sinis boutique hotel
The Phoenix Path to Sinis Peninsula and Tharros
Learning about and tasting bottarga.

We are now on the west coast and start walking again. A local guide will lead us along the Phoenix Path that follows the coast overlooking the Gulf of Oristano to your left and the Cabras Ponds on your right, traversing fish farms and ending at the Sinis Peninsula at Cape San Marco.
On the way back, we will stop at the Tower of San Giovanni. From the 50-metre vantage point you will see, to your right, the ‘live sea’, exposed to the wind, and to your left the ‘dead sea’, protected from the wind – and Tharros, a city founded by the Phoenicians in around 800 AD, on what was then a Roman site. From the tower, the guide will tell you about Tharros. Further inland, the sand dunes give way to Cabras Ponds, a swampy ecosystem among the largest and most flourishing in Europe, and home to the greater flamingo.
We return to Cabras by minibus to visit Cabras Pond at the Pontis Consortium and learn the secret to catching grey mullet and producing bottarga. Bottarga is smoked grey or red roe from mullet, tuna and even swordfish. Sardinia is where bottarga has always been produced, and Cabras is the mecca of mullet bottarga. Even though it’s becoming known in North America, the product is still by far an unknown delight. A tasting concludes the day.

Activity level: 4, almost flat
Walk: 15 km
Midday meal: pranzo al sacco
Dinner: Mar’e e Pontis Fishery
Night: Acquae Sinis boutique hotel
Sheep-milking competition and visit to the Giants
We start our last day with a visit to the farm of Marcolino, who is a shepherd in Su Prano, a few kilometres from Cabras. Marcolino, a real cultural ambassador for this rural area, will school you in the art of sheep milking. You’ll then take part in a milking competition; the best-performing milkers will receive a medal crafted by a local artist. After all that milking, Marcolino will demonstrate how to make cheese and ricotta. And what better way to end your farm visit than with a cheese and wine tasting? The wine is a v ernaccia di Oristano , a staple in the life and customs of this area, and the whole of Sardinia.

There’s nowhere quite like Sardinia, the undisputed home to the best beaches in Italy. The landscapes are simply unreal; the island’s features are wild and gorgeous.
Coupled with Italian food and culture, the natural beauty of this Mediterranean island makes Sardinia tours a firm favorite for idyllic Italy beach holidays.
Adventure & Explore
To tour Sardinia is to discover splendidly unspoilt white and gold sand beaches, spectacular rocky promontories, crystal blue Mediterranean Sea and beautiful vegetation. The essence of Mirto, the Sardinian berry which can be made into a delicious liqueur, and jasmine flowers fill the air as you gaze at the sun, moon, and stars as they sparkle on the sea, their light shining brighter than you have ever seen it before.
This land is marked by proud and ancient culture with inhabitants that have occupied the island for millennia. Distinctive in history, language, a unique fusion of populations, culture and cuisine – this land is rustic, unusual, and wonderful to explore. Be awestruck as you tour Sardinia through impressive fortified towns or quaint fishing villages and admire the crafts of artisans who have handmade creations in the same ways as their elders have for centuries.

Day 1 Arrival in Alghero
Landing in Alghero, a charming historic town on the west coast of Sardinia. As with all our Sardinia tours, you’ll be warmly welcomed with a smile and a wave by both your private driver and Alma Italia tour host. The Alma Italia philosophy as specialist Sardinia Tour operators is that Sardinia Tours should be about rest, fun and adventure, to inspire and restore you. The day of your arrival then is designed for you to recharge after your long flight. Your private driver will take you straight to your stylish boutique hotel in the heart of Alghero where you can relax and get refreshed. When you are ready, we will take you on a stroll through the centre of Alghero to soak up the atmosphere and then to dinner at one of our favourite local restaurants in all of Alghero to enjoy your first taste of mouthwatering Italian cuisine at its finest and most authentic.

Day 2 Capo Caccia
After a relaxing slow morning of a delicious breakfast by the pool to recover from your journey, your private driver will help you begin to tour Sardinia in style with a scenic drive of the majestic cliffs along the coast known as ‘Capo Caccia’, for Instagram-worthy pictures. Ancient white cliffs shaped by time, plunge into the sea; caves and underwater grottoes; rare ocean coral; marine flora and shoals of fish: the spectacular landscapes of the north-western tip of Sardinia will stun you. In the afternoon back to Alghero town for lunch and a stroll while shopping accompanied by a local guide to provide you with a historical and cultural perspective of the town.

Day 3 The spectacular bay of Stintino
Today you will discover why Sardinia is without a doubt home to the best Italy beach holidays. Your private driver will take you to Stintino, the next base of your Sardinia tour. After settling into your boutique hotel it’s time to grab your beach towel and hit what is renowned as one of the most beautiful Italian beaches, ‘Pelosa’. Take the day to fully enjoy this spectacular place and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at a classic beach side ‘Trattoria’.

Day 4 Asinara Island
It is possible on Alma Italia’s Sardinia tours to also explore the smaller paradise islands surrounding the coastline of Sardinia. Today a private boat will take you to Asinara Island, just off the bay of Stintino. You will explore the island by Jeep, soaking up the natural beauty and learning about it’s fascinating history. Asinara island used to be a prison back in the past, however if it were us, we’d confess to any crime if it meant being taken here since this place is heaven on earth, and you will see why! The day will finish with dinner at a local restaurant watching the sunset over the glistening Mediterranean.

Day 5 Santa Maria Teresa di Gallura
Today your Sardinia tour will take you along the north coast to Santa Maria Teresa di Gallura. – On the way we will stop at the spectacular rocky coast, Costa Paradiso, another of our favorite Italy beach holidays spots. We will spend a good portion of the day here relaxing on the smooth rocks, swimming in the impossibly clear ocean water, taking the pictures of a lifetime. In the evening as the day cools, take some time before dinner to stroll around this charming coastal town before a gourmet evening at a typical Sardinian restaurant sampling local delicacies paired with plenty of local wine. It would be rude not to try it after all!

Day 6 Maddalena Islands
Another paradise is waiting for you on day six! Alma Italia will prove again why we are the most stylish of Sardinia tour operators by having a private boat waiting to take you off shore today to explore the Maddalena islands archipelago. Tour Sardinia like a local in the know by sailing to this stunning group of small islands to swim in the bluest water you ever seen! Lunch will be a delicious Italian picnic served on the boat. In the evening enjoy free time and perhaps wonder around the town of Santa Teresa di Gallura to try one of the best gelato’s you ever had!

Day 7 Olbia
Today your driver will take you to Olbia, our last destination. On route your driver will take you to one of the best vineyards in Sardinia to taste some of their highly regarded wines among the vines on your very own Sardinia wine tour.
In the afternoon enjoy one last dip in the crystal Sardinian Mediterranean before a guided walk to discover the bustling town of Olbia. Enjoy your last Italian dinner with some special local traits we will have waiting for you!

M ost of the olive oil activities led by Tasting Sardinia are held in the Sarcidano area, a patch of land situated right in the centre of the island. Many of us still have bonds in that part of Sardinia and it makes things smooth when it comes to arrange, organize and appreciate everything is related to olive oil.
Witness to this statement, the olive oil farms rooted in this area recently achieved reputable awards in the regional and even national circuit. The intense aroma of fruity green olive with hints of fresh grass makes this extra virgin olive oil an irreplaceable guest of your table. The sweet and intense flavour combined with the slightly bitter and pungent taste of artichokes complete the painting.
Sa mola and Corte Olias are two native olive oil producers operating in the Sarcidano area. They both have lately won the prestigious national prize at Vinitaly competition as the best DOP young extra virgin olive oil of Italy . We are enthusiastic to have a collaboration with them as their factories are stronghold of our activities and their precious olive oil the highlight of our experience.
Visit the largest fish market in Europe and tasting
Cooking lesson: home made pasta, pick up olives with local farmers, grind them in a traditional oil mill, guided visit to the oil mill, olive oil tasting with an expert, visit an ethnographic museum, the last coppersmith.
“Over the years I gained the conviction that the aesthetic rendition of an object is given by his functionality rather than his decorations. The aesthetic is intrinsically linked to the laws of nature that determine the shape, intended as a consequence of the use; changing the form of an object may change his functional performance.” Luigi Pitzalis
