What’s a holiday without peace of mind?  Resorts, hotels and activity operators are Care Fiji Committed (CFC) and open to all travellers. This means that they’ve adopted WHO-approved health and safety practices throughout their business and can assist you should you feel unwell.

We've created a list of businesses that have made the Care Fiji Commitment  to help you plan your holiday.

Effective 14 February 2023, international travellers arriving into Fiji by air or sea will no longer be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and travel insurance to enter Fiji. 

Returning home

With your holiday over, it’ll be time to say goodbye to Fiji and hello to the reality of heading home.  Make sure you’re familiar with your country’s requirements for returning home. 

Depending on your country's return requirements, you may need to be tested for COVID-19 before you fly home.  Costs for a Rapid Antigen test (RAT) starts from approximately $30FJD. Some countries require a PCR test which starts from approximately $200 FJD. Please note that testing costs will vary.    Please also take note of age groups that need to be tested as per your country's requirements.   All RAT and PCR test requirements needed for your return home will be managed at your hotel.  Speak to them about your tests when you check in so that they have ample time to arrange. If you intend to stay with family or friends, you will need to book your required tests to return home at locations outside a hotel.  (See FAQs  'Returning Home' section for locations). UNITED STATES OF AMERICA If you're travelling to Fiji and then on to the United States of America within 10 days of leaving China, Hong Kong or Macau, you may be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test taken no more than 2 days before departure.   CHINA If you are returning to mainland China and Hong Kong, please check with the Chinese Embassy in Suva or the Chinese Embassy in your connecting flight destination for the most current testing and entry requirements.

You are not required to test for COVID-19 but you can if you want to if you feel unwell and have COVID-19 like symptoms. 

If you test positive you’re staying at a Care Fiji Commitment (CFC) property , alert your resort’s Wellness Ambassador. They have plans and procedures in place that can help you isolate comfortably in your resort. They will put you in touch with the relevant medical authorities.  

Hotel isolation for guests who test positive for COVID-19 is 5 days.  A "fit to fly" certificate will be issued after this isolation period to allow a return home in the event the tourist still tests positive, depending on their home country's requirements.  

Testing Positive  

A small number of countries require you to test before you can return home.  So, depending on your home-country’s entry requirements, you may be needed to test towards the end of your Fiji holiday 

Hotel Isolation If You Test Positive for COVID.  

If you test positive for COVID-19 in Fiji, you will be required to isolate at your hotel, or another 'overflow' facility to start a 5-day isolation period. 

A PCR test can be requested to verify the result if required by your insurance company. 

Formal isolation ends after 5 full days if you feel fever-free for 24 hours and other symptoms have improved.   

Hotel Isolation for Close Contacts Who Test Negative 

Negative close contacts can choose to join you in isolation or stay in their original accommodation.       

Negative close contacts who do not isolate should test if they experience any symptoms.  If they test positive on a COVID-19 test, a 5-day isolation period will commence. 

Returning Home after Isolation  

To re-enter your home country, you may need to comply with your country’s testing requirements to confirm that you are negative or no longer infectious.    

If you continue to test positive after a 5-day isolation, a medical certificate will be provided by Fiji health officers confirming that you are no longer infectious – this is known as a Fit to Fly certificate  

If you have travel insurance, please ensure that it is adequate to cover any unexpected extra days in Fiji due to a positive case.  

Please continuously review updates to your country’s evolving re-entry protocols for citizens who have contracted COVID-19 while travelling overseas.

Fiji is the travel hub for the South Pacific, and a popular stopover on round-the-world tickets. The majority of direct flights arrive from New Zealand, Australia or Los Angeles, and travellers from North America or Europe usually must connect through one of these. Arriving by boat is only possible on a privately chartered yacht, by taking one of the few cruise liners calling in at Lautoka or Suva or by finding passage on a container ship.

Flights from the US and Canada

Flights from the uk and europe, flights from australia, new zealand and south africa, flights from elsewhere in the pacific, agents and operators, getting to fiji by boat.

If flying from Australia or New Zealand, Fiji’s tourism market, you’re likely to find heavily discounted airfares and package deals, particularly in the low season between January and April. The majority of travel agents focus on the ever-popular resorts in the Mamanucas, the large hotels along the Coral Coast on the main island and the occasional outer-island boutique retreat.

From North America, the UK or continental Europe, options are more limited, although you should find Fiji as a stopover on many round-the-world tickets. The main tour operators in these regions tend to offer only the large international hotels around Nadi as package holidays. Searching for the best-priced flights, or using frequent-flyer points, then booking more desirable accommodation independently is likely to give you the most options at the lowest price.

Fiji-bound travellers from North America have two choices for a direct flight to Nadi Airport: Air New Zealand or Fiji Airways. Both have daily flights from Los Angeles , with Fiji Airways also having twice weekly flights from Vancouver via Honolulu . The eleven-hour nonstop flight from Los Angeles costs from US$850 return, or US$1400 from Vancouver.

From the UK , you have the choice of travelling west via North America or east via Asia – it’s 16,000km either way. Fares follow the high and low seasons between Europe and North America or Europe and Australia, with June to August and the Christmas holidays being particularly busy, with fewer discounted deals available.

Air New Zealand ( airnz.co.nz ) offers a convenient nonstop flight to Fiji via Los Angeles departing daily (except Fri) from Heathrow and costing £1000–1600 – the flight takes 26hr including a four-hour connecting stopover at Los Angeles (unfortunately you have to clear US customs and immigration then re-enter which makes the transit a little frustrating). Air New Zealand also offers a daily eastern route from London Heathrow via Hong Kong and New Zealand, although this journey takes 28hr with two stopovers and costs from £1000.

Some of the cheapest direct flights to Fiji from London are via Seoul with Korean Air ( koreanair.com ), costing from £750 if booked via an agent, with the outward journey taking 24hr but the return leg requiring an overnight stop in Seoul with hotel and transfers included in the flight price.

Otherwise, your best option is to find a cheap flight on the route between the UK and Australia (costing from £650), and then buy a return flight from either Brisbane or Sydney to Nadi with Virgin Australia, which adds around £300.

Flights to Fiji are most frequent from Australia and New Zealand and both offer competitively priced deals, with reduced fares on the Internet and special offers bundled with accommodation packages.

Two airlines operate flights from Australia : Virgin Australia (virginaustralia.com) and Fiji Airways ( fijiairways.com ). Both airlines depart daily from Brisbane and Sydney , taking about 4hr, with deals often available from A$350 return; Fiji Airways also has four flights a week from Melbourne (5hr), costing roughly A$200 more.

The shorter hop (3hr 5min) from New Zealand is generally more expensive, and monopolized by Fiji Airways and Air New Zealand ( airnz.co.nz ), with daily flights from Auckland starting from NZ$400. There’s also a weekly flight from Christchurch operated by Fiji Airways taking 4hr (from NZ$500).

The most direct route for travellers from South Africa is to fly to Sydney or Auckland and then on to Fiji.

Flying to Fiji from elsewhere in the South Pacific is not always practical, and often quite expensive, despite Fiji being the main travel hub for the region. Fiji’s national airline, Fiji Airways (330 4388, fijiairways.com ), flies to Fiji from: Apia, Samoa (2 weekly; 1hr 5min; F$485 one way); Funafuti, Tuvalu (2 weekly; 2hr 30min; F$780 one way); Honolulu, Hawaii (2 weekly; 8hr; F$865 one way); Christmas Island, Kiribati (1 weekly; 4hr; F$675 one way); Tarawa, Kiribati (2 weekly; 3hr; F$677 one way); Port Vila, Vanuatu (3 weekly; 1hr 30min; F$392 one way); and Nuku‘alofa, Tonga (2 weekly; 1hr 20min; F$350 one way).

Other regional airlines serving Nadi include: Aircalin from Noumea, New Caledonia ( aircalin.com ; 3 weekly; 2hr; F$750 one way); Air Vanuatu from Port Vila, Vanuatu ( airvanuatu.com ; 1 weekly; 1hr 40min; F$390 one way); and Solomon Airlines from Honiara, Solomon Islands ( flysolomons.com ; 2 weekly; 3hr; F$525 one way). There are no direct flights between Fiji and the Cook Islands, Tahiti or Easter Island – the easiest way to get to Fiji from these eastern Polynesian destinations is via Auckland or Los Angeles.

Although a romantic proposition, arriving in Fiji by boat is tricky unless on a private yacht – it’s a five- to ten-day journey up from New Zealand depending on weather, or at least a month’s sailing across the Pacific from the US west coast. Several large cruise liners visit Fiji but usually spend only a day at port, either at Lautoka, Suva or Savusavu before cruising around the islands, perhaps dropping anchor for snorkelling trips, and then heading back to the open seas.

Finding passage on a container ship was once one of the great adventures of the Pacific, but most companies no longer take passengers due to heightened security concerns. If visiting by yacht , Fiji has four ports of entry : Suva (330 2864), Lautoka (666 7734), Levuka (344 0425) and Savusavu (885 0728). Clearance must be requested at least 48 hours before arrival: for the regulations you need to follow go to ( www.frca.org.fj/yachts-arrival/ ). For detailed sailing info, Yacht Help (675 0911, yachthelp.com), based at Port Denarau on Viti Levu publishes the extremely useful and free Fiji Marine Guide ; they’ll also try and find a yacht charter if you don’t have your own boat. Otherwise, you may find crew work at one of the marinas and possibly passage on to New Zealand, Australia or California. Most yachts depart Fiji by September or October before the start of the hurricane season and start to arrive again, often having sailed via Tonga or Tahiti, from May to August.

Travel Tuesday 2023 Flight and Travel Deals

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are chock-full of tempting travel and flight discounts, Travel Deal Tuesday or Travel Tuesday, as it's become known, has actually become one of the best days of the year to score a travel deal, according to the flight booking site and app Hopper .

After analyzing pricing data from the past decade, Hopper found that the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, aka Travel Tuesday, which falls on November 28 this year, has the highest volume of deals during the postholiday sales week, a promotional period that runs from Black Friday (the Friday after Thanksgiving) through the following week (also known as Cyber Week).

Last year, Hopper saw more flights discounted on Travel Tuesday than on Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined-and it is predicting the same price drops this year. The site estimates that travel companies will be offering up to 80 percent off on trips to destinations that will include Hawai‘i , Orlando , Phoenix, and Las Vegas . More than 120 hotels, 30 tourism boards, and several airlines have already committed to listing discounts on November 28, Hopper reports.

So why the increase in flight deals? Hayley Berg, an economist at Hopper, explained in a statement that demand for travel is actually pretty low at the end of November and early December, when most people have already booked their holiday travel but haven't yet started booking much for the coming year. Travel companies try to entice them to do so by rolling out attractive deals.

The company is predicting that flights from several airlines will be discounted this year, including Aer Lingus, Air New Zealand , Fiji Airways, French Bee , and Singapore Airlines .

Hopper is forecasting that the destinations most likely to be on sale will include the Bahamas , Bali , Las Vegas , London , Miami , Paris , and Tokyo . Travelers should also expect to see major savings on hotels.

In fact, some Travel Tuesday deals have already begun to roll out. They include Virgin Hotels , which is offering 30 percent off on hotel bookings made between now and the end of the year. And for bookings made on Travel Tuesday (November 28), Virgin Hotels will donate 5 percent of revenue from all direct bookings on that day to Feeding America and Feeding Britain to help fight hunger and food insecurity.

Virgin Voyages , Richard Branson's cheeky adults-only cruise line , is also offering up to 30 percent off on sailings booked by the end of November.

Oceania Cruises , known for its foodie-driven sailings , is discounting cabins by up to $5,400 for bookings made by December 5, 2023, for more than 100 itineraries in 2024.

Hyatt is offering 20 percent off stays booked by December 5, 2023, for travel that takes place by April 30, 2024, at participating Hyatt hotels in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Use the code "STAYNOW" at hyatt.com/possibilities .

Global tour operator G Adventures is offering up to 30 percent off small group tours to select destinations like Peru, Thailand, and India for travel booked by the end of November that takes place through April 30, 2024.

Fiji Airways is running a sale that is offering a discount of up to 24% on flights from select U.S. cities to the South Pacific. There’s not a lot of time to take advantage of this sale and fares are first come, first served.

The Fiji Airways sale is valid for round-trip Economy Lite fares only from Honolulu (HNL) , Los Angeles (LAX) , and San Francisco (SFO) to various South Pacific countries, from as little as $698 . The sale applies to select travel dates until all flights are sold out.

Destinations include Nadi, Fiji; Noumea, New Caledonia; Apia, Samoa; Tonga; Port Vila, Vanuatu; and Honiara, Solomon Islands .

Economy Lite fares include 1 carry-on bag but there are additional economy fare categories that come with more amenities. Economy Value fares include a checked bag while Economy Comfort includes 2 checked bags and seat selection. The final economy fare option is Economy Plus which comes with all of the aforementioned perks plus extra legroom and priority boarding.

All economy fares come with complimentary meals, beverages, and entertainment .

Fiji Airways’ business class cabin features lie-flat seats, complimentary Wi-Fi, and fine dining. Business class fares are not a part of the current promotion.

The ‘dupe’ trend hit travel in 2023. It's a good way to save on your next trip, experts say

• "Dupes," short for duplicates, was popularized as a broad consumer trend by social media platform TikTok.
• Travelers adopted the strategy of seeking out cheaper alternatives in 2023 as prices soared, and will continue to do so in 2024, experts said.
• It's not always about flight price. In many cases, travelers can also save on hotels, food and local transportation, too, experts said.

Travel was expensive and busy in 2023, leading jetsetters to seek out cheaper, less-trodden alternatives to popular hot spots. It's a great way to save money on trips heading into 2024, according to experts.

This concept — seeking out cheaper duplicates, or " dupes ," of pricey products — was popularized by Gen Z and millennial influencers on social media and has gained broad traction amid high inflation .

"In 2024, Americans are more likely to choose hidden-gem destinations over tried-and-true tourist hotspots for their vacations," said Jon Gieselman, president of Expedia Brands.

Flight searches for travel 'dupes' increased in 2023

Dupe is, of course, a new term that puts a spin on the old concept of bargain hunting.

Data shows that travelers leveraged the strategy more in 2023. For example, flight searches more than doubled for several "dupe" destinations internationally, according to Expedia data.

Searches to Taipei, a dupe for Seoul, were up 458% in the U.S. and 2,786% globally, according to Expedia. Those to Pattaya, Thailand, an alternative to Bangkok, rose 163% in the U.S. and 249% globally.

Likewise, flight searches to the island Curaçao, a stand-in for St. Martin, were up 228% in the U.S. and 185% worldwide. Those to Perth, Australia, a dupe for Sydney, jumped 33% in the U.S. and 109% globally. Additionally, those to Liverpool, England, a London alternative, spiked 138% in the U.S. and 97% worldwide, according to Expedia.

The data compared searches in the 12-month period through Aug. 31, 2023, to the same period the prior year.

"TikTok popularized the idea of dupes … and the concept is increasingly taking off in the world of travel," Expedia said in a report published Wednesday.

Affordability is a top driver of travel dupes

Affordability is among the top reasons cited by consumers for seeking out these alternate destinations, Expedia said.

"If you are looking to save money on your next trip, consider an alternate destination," said Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper, a travel app. "Oftentimes you can save on airfare and hotel rates by picking a destination off the beaten track."

For example, the average round-trip flight from the U.S. to Hanoi, Vietnam, is $1,564. Travelers would save money by flying instead to Ho Chi Minh City, where a flight averages $1,326, Hopper said.

In a similar vein, let's say you're considering a trip to Spain.

A round-trip flight to Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands, costs $827, on average. Instead, you might consider a trip to Barcelona, a popular metropolis, where a flight costs an average $572, according to Hopper. Likewise, flights to Phuket, Thailand, an island getaway, cost $1,705 round trip, while flights to the capital Bangkok cost $1,404. The Hopper prices are current averages for departures in December to March.

More Americans planned trips abroad this year as their pandemic-era health fears waned and countries largely reopened their borders to visitors. Americans applied for passports in record numbers in 2022 and 2023.

That surging demand caused prices to surge across the travel spectrum. Airfare to Europe , the most popular destination for U.S. tourists, was the most expensive on record in summer 2023.  

Internet search traffic in the U.S. for travel dupes spiked throughout 2023, peaking in July, according to Google Trends data .

It's more than just the flight price

However, Hopper flight data indicates that not all dupes will necessarily pay off for travelers. They may need to try a few different alternatives to find savings.

For example, the average round-trip flight from the U.S. to Perth, the aforementioned dupe for Sydney, currently costs $2,389, while a flight to Sydney costs $1,572, according to Hopper. However, travelers who look a bit farther afield — to Nadi, Fiji, or Auckland, New Zealand — would spend $1,365 and $1,394, respectively, Hopper said.

However, dupes aren't just about the airfare. People traveling off the beaten track can often save on food, hotels and local transportation, said Sara Rathner, travel expert at NerdWallet.

Avoiding "way over-touristed" locales, especially if traveling during peak season, can also be a more enjoyable experience due to smaller crowds, Rathner said.

When picking a "dupe" destination, travelers should research details such as amenities, infrastructure and safety considerations, Rathner added. Reading online travel articles and blogs, and asking friends who may have visited before, can give a general sense as to potential itineraries and the ease of lodging and getting around, she said.

To save money on general travel, try being flexible with trip dates, Berg said. For example, flying on a Tuesday can save you $100 on domestic airfare, while departing Monday through Wednesday can save up to $150 per international ticket, Berg said.

Hotel stays are most expensive Friday and Saturday night. Starting a stay on Sunday can save an average of 25% off weekend rates, she added. Don't miss these stories from CNBC PRO:

Airline with the comfiest seats revealed in passenger choice awards

Flying in a plane is never going to be the most comfortable experience - but if you choose the right airline , that doesn't have to be the case.

Fiji Airways has been named the airline with the comfiest seats in the South Pacific region.

The island country's national carrier also took home the gong for best on-board entertainment.

The APEX Passenger Choice Awards for 2024, which were announced overnight in Singapore, awarded Fiji Airlines in both categories. This is the second year in a row the airline has been awarded for their seat comfort.

Some Australian airlines were also recognised with Best in South Pacific awards. Rex won in the category of Best Cabin Service, while Qantas won for their in-flight Wi-Fi.

Air New Zealand took home the top gong in the region, being awarded best airline overall in the South Pacific.

Along with their comfy seats, Fiji Airways was also recognised for their stellar in-flight entertainment.

The airline has added new-release titles from Disney and HBO to its inflight entertainment content recently, providing more than 840 hours of content.

On some newer airlines, guests will be able to stream content directly to their devices, while business class passengers will be given an iPad to use for the flight's duration.
