‘What just happened?!’: EA Sports PGA Tour streamer loses hole-in-one in unfathomable way, goes insane

PGA TOUR Archive

As someone who once broke a window after losing a game of Madden , I certainly understand when an individual loses their cool while playing a video game. There are few things more infuriating than when the game is seemingly out to get you, making you look like an imbecile any chance it gets.

This happened to streamer xGDOG in the most insane of ways, and we’re glad that this was captured for posterity. He was certainly robbed of an ace and reacted accordingly.

MORE: We played Augusta National the day after the Masters, and it was 10 million times better than we dreamed

Sometimes, you’ll see someone complain and know that they should’ve just done better, but this one actually feels like the game was out to get him. The ball literally jumped back out of the hole as if it was starring in a Looney Tunes short. Just tremendous stuff.

And then, it’s all about the response. Just righteous fury.

The “walk away from the TV so you don’t do something you regret” move is a classic. Take a lap and calm down if you can.

We’re sorry this happened to you, Mr. Gdog, but you got something even better than a hole-in-one … a viral tweet that made it to Golf Digest . Congratulations.

THE GRIND: Jon Rahm's prescient tweet & Brandel Chamblee's brilliant phrase

What impacts your shot?

There’s a reason players and caddies talk before their shot to best achieve success on the course so you’ll experience this in the pre-shot decisions you’ll have to make for a great shot. The challenge of your shot appears in a split between pre-shot decisions like club and shot types, with swing execution and placement based on course dynamics. This way you’ll be thinking more “golf” and less “golf swing” only.

A variety of factors like club and shot type all impact your shot but most of all, course dynamics and ball behavior like wind, altitude, terrain reactions, ball dribbling, and more will impact your shot. The full list of aspects that impact your shot are listed below

  • Slope of the terrain
  • Velocity & spin reduction from adverse terrain (like rough)
  • Golfer, club, and ball attributes
  • Power boost
  • Swing execution
  • In-flight Spin Control
  • Ball Reactions depending on terrain type and course Conditions
  • Ball dribbling

What game modes (online and offline) are available in-game?

Online game modes:

Online game modes support simultaneous play for up to 16 players and include the following game mopeds.

  • COMPETITIVE mode is ranked matchmaking to test your skills in numerous game types including 9 and 18 hole rounds.
  • SOCIAL mode allows you to play against similarly skilled players online in a more relaxed  unranked environment, offering multiple ways to play such as 9 and 18 hole rounds.
  • PRIVATE MATCH mode allows you to group up with your friends and play online together with full control of gameplay and round settings allowing you to fully customize your round.

Offline game modes:

  • If you just want to dive in quickly and play a round, QUICK PLAY is exactly what you’re looking for.  Quick play can also be played as local multiplayer (couch co-op) with up to 4 golfers offering varying ways to compete such as match play, skins, alternate shot rules, and more.
  • CAREER MODE is an offline mode that will be playable at launch (but will require an online connection). You’ll hear more about that during our career mode deep dive in the coming weeks.
  • CHALLENGES provides bite-sized experiences of various lengths. Ranging anywhere from a 4 hole challenge to recreating a golfer’s hot streak from a recent PGA Tour event, to single shot challenges where you, for example, are given 5 opportunities to hit a specific shot, challenges are short yet difficult moments for you to grow your skills and earn rewards. Within Challenges mode, there’s “PGA Coach Skill Center” which is a great way to learn more about game mechanics, shot types, and the game of golf in general.
  • TOURNAMENTS provides limited-time tournaments for players to go in by themselves and submit a score to a global leaderboard that other users are also submitting to. From here, the game gives you a final rank that is paid out in rank points based on finishing position. Most of it is stroke play, where the number of holes can be variable. Ongoing seasonal events throughout the pro golf calendar can also alter the tournaments for different settings on different courses.

How can I customize gameplay to my personal preferences?

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR features a variety of gameplay styles from arcade settings that assist you with a putting grid, power boost, and spin control to simulation settings that remove all assistance for a true-to-life gameplay experience.

Is there weather available in-game?

There are a variety of factors that impact gameplay on the course including altitude and wind. Courses in traditionally cloudy areas like The Old Course at St. Andrews will appear cloudy while sunny courses like The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island will appear bright. Other weather conditions will not affect gameplay or appear in-game.

Will there be a 3-click swing option in-game?

We know that the 3-click swing is important to the community and as a result of early community feedback we are planning to include this swing in an early title update after launch.

PGA Tour 2K23 vs EA SPORTS PGA TOUR: Which is the hole-in-one and which is out of bounds?

Richard Dobson

It would be fair to say that The Golf Club/PGA Tour 2K series picked up where EA SPORTS left their golf games. Prior to the release of EA SPORTS PGA TOUR, the last golf entry from EA was back in 2015 with Rory McIlroy PGA Tour , by which point The Golf Club had dipped their toe in and liked the sensation. Four games later from HB Studios and EA have come back swinging with their own golf game.

But which is best? Is it PGA Tour 2K23 or EA SPORTS PGA TOUR? Well, luckily for you, we are here to answer that question. Running against the criteria of courses, roster, features, gameplay and presentation, we are going to pit the two together and give you the ultimate answer. Let’s hit the links and find out.

ea sports pga tour bunker shot

Unlike say, a FIFA or a Madden game where their green bits play identical amongst stadiums, the courses that appear in a golf game can make or break it. It is one of the most crucial features, allowing players to play the courses of their dreams that may not be otherwise possible.

At launch, PGA Tour 2K23 launched with twenty-four courses, compared to EA SPORTS PGA TOUR’s thirty. Courses such as Torrey Pines, TPC Sawgrass and Pebble Beach feature across both but EA SPORTS’ title has arguably the two most famous courses in the world up its sleeve: The Old Course at St Andrews and Augusta National. The latter being playable in a golf game for the first time since Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14.

Whilst Augusta National alone is enough to give this round to EA SPORTS, PGA Tour 2K23 does technically boast an unlimited number of courses thanks to the course creator feature. However, in this instance it is quality over quantity, and the winner is EA.

pga tour 2k23 tiger

For years, Tiger Woods graced the cover of the annual EA SPORTS golf game. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that when 2K got the rights for one of the greatest golfers of all-time that they would plaster him all over their front cover. But who else is included?

Once again there are crossovers with the likes of Xander Schuffele, Tony Finau and Lexi Thompson all appearing in both. EA SPORTS has a selection of golfers from both the PGA and LIV tours, whereas 2K has purely focused on the PGA roster. There are some big names on the LIV Tour, but it remains controversial, so think what you will of their inclusion.

EA SPORTS is also missing Jon Rahm who, after winning the latest Masters tournament and becoming world number one, is a big omission.

Both games feature a small handful of LPGA Tour golfers. The aforementioned Thompson plus Brooke Henderson and Lydia Ko for 2K, and Nelly and Jessica Korda, Jin Young Ko, Danielle Kang for EA. It is a start, but not enough compared to the men’s list.

But, once again 2K has an ace up its sleeve with playable characters away from the world of golfing. From launch they have had Steph Curry and Michael Jordan as playable characters, and have more recently added John Cena and the guys over at Barstool Golf as well. The former personalities are all from 2K making use of their various licenses in NBA 2K23 and WWE 2K23 , and it’s this that has earned them the point here.

Winner: PGA Tour 2K23

pga tour 2k23 topgolf

Both games feature extensive single-player Career modes and for the majority of players, these will be the main focus. But what else is included to distract you from aiming for the FedEx Championship?

2K has the previously mentioned course creator which can easily take up a chunk of time for those who are of a creative persuasion. It also features Topgolf, playable in both local and online multiplayer. For those that don’t know, Topgolf is a social golf space set in various locations in the real world. Think of it as like a bowling alley but for golf; the emphasis is more on fun rather than skill.

EA hasn’t necessarily gone for ‘bloating the game with modes’ approach. There are challenges to undertake, along with live ones based on the current real-world major being played, but no exclusive modes. Instead, they have tried to make the most realistic looking golf game of all-time. And they really have: courses play drastically differently from one another and you can see how the shadows change as you progress on your round and the night draws in. EA have also painstakingly recreated these courses using custom Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology that is more realistic than public sources. For the layman out there, that basically means you can see the individual blades of grass.

Both games will feature post-release content as well, only increasing the amount on offer here, but for the sheer attention to detail, it has to go to EA on this round.

ea sports pga tour swing

PGA Tour 2K23 attempts to be much more of a simulation golf title, as opposed to EA SPORTS PGA TOUR simulation. The reason behind this is because EA’s offering is still rooted in the past with more arcade-inspired options, and I mean that in a good way. Being able to boost your shot power and adding spin after you have hit the ball are all present once again in EA PGA, but do somewhat dampen the simulation realism.

Also perhaps leaning towards the arcade style is 2K’s inclusion of a three-click system, reminiscent of some of the very early golf titles. The use of analog sticks is present in both, but the inclusion on 2K’s part at least attempts to bring newcomers in.

But once again, I am going to give this round to EA. It’s the sum of the parts; the huge variety of different shots, the pseudo-arcade/sim gameplay and the one feature that every single game needs, the Heartbeat Moments. Nothing beats the moment you hit a shot that is arrowed into the hole and the speed slows down, the camera focuses in and a beating heart comes out of the speakers. The first time you get a Heartbeat Moment, you know you’ve hit a special shot.

ea sports pga tour hole

Our final criteria is for presentation. Both games replicate golf well enough, but which one has those little extras? The touches that elevate the game from very good, to excellent?

First off, I will say that the fact that neither game has a licensed soundtrack feels like a trick missed. The intro to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 with Party Up by the late DMX blaring is iconic. And what music is present in these latest games isn’t the greatest.

The green and yellow of The Masters sets the tone for EA SPORTS PGA TOUR though. It is used in the main menus and also in the presentation when playing on Augusta. When not on that course, the UI is crisp and presents all the information you need. This is coupled with commentary that provides useful info for each hole and a wide variety of feedback based on performances in recent tournaments.

How does 2K hold up?

Well, one of my biggest gripes for PGA Tour 2K23 was in relation to the pretty lifeless courses. This, and the very long delays between loading up a replay really do pull you out of the moment of hitting a good shot. As a result, I think you know which way this point is heading again.

So we get to the final score and are left with: PGA Tour 2K23 1 vs 4 EA SPORTS PGA TOUR

For 2K’s sake, it is a shame that this isn’t golf scoring where the lowest score wins. But the truth of the matter is that EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is night and day better than PGA Tour 2K23. In years gone by where there hasn’t been an EA offering, the 2K option has been the only real choice. And whilst it is a solid golf game in its own right, up against competition it is way behind. And sadly, not even Michael Jordan and John Cena can do much to improve it.

The winner, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is out now for Xbox Series X|S from £69.99 . The runner-up, PGA Tour 2K23 is available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S priced from £59.99 . I guess you could give another point to 2K for a cheaper game, but that £10 difference is worth it for the superior game.

I’ve just bought the 2K23 version for 22 quid. I’ve played a lot of PGA games, right back to Megadrive days, but not played any since Rory McIlroy on the Xbox. I wasn’t sure why there were two ‘new’ PGA games so I went for the cheap option without much research, I’ve barely scratched 2K23 but even the training got me frustrated. The timing of the stroke is something you must get right, yet there is no (that I’m aware of) method of knowing when to push the stick forward to get the sweet spot. I ended up hooking 90% of the training shots, slicing a few then without knowing how – hitting one in the right place to move on. I’ve downloaded the EA free trial now but will likely end up getting it as I miss the ‘spin’ and ‘power’ options. I don’t care if it’s real or’s about fun for me.

I totally disagree. I stumped up 70 quid in a pre order for the EA game whilst playing 2K23. Couldn’t believe how bad it ended up compared to 2K23. I guess I just don’t like the arcade feeling. I think the perspective is too close to the player and there is no sense of space like on a real course. You can’t even see the ball a second or so after hitting so it switches to follow mode. 2K23 feels like you have loads of space and if you disable the automatic ball follow, you get a massive sense of satisfaction watching your ball from first person perspective. Smoking a perfect drive down the fairway still feels awesome after months of playing. If you play society games there are amazing course creators out there creating beautiful and interesting courses to play. I’ve ditched EA and gone back to 2K23. Yes there are problems with 2K23 but by far the most enjoyable game for me.

You might disagree but 2k23 has very poor swing mechanics compared to EA. it’s doesn’t play or look like an authentic golf swing and why are you praising that course creator? Every fake course I’ve come across looks and plays horrible! if I am playing a PGA tour golf game, I want to play REAL pga courses! Not these made up rubbish ones. what is the point in 2k being in partnership with the pga tour if there game has a course creator? I HATE that feature.

There definitely ain’t no competition here EA Sports are the clear winners in this battle. Well let’s face it their competitor is a JOKE. the only thing 2k have got that is good is tiger woods. Hopefully he will see sense and go back to EA. 2k and HB studios know NOTHING about golf, there gameplay is embarrassing, not enough REAL pga tour courses, too many fake rubbish ones, what is the point of being in partnership with the pga tour if your only concern is that awful course creator. They might as well just make a golf game WITHOUT any deal with the pga tour. Just call golf 2k. so do us all a favour 2k and STOP making golf games! stick to Nba and Wwe.

EA Sports PGA Tour brings true golf authenticity back to the fore

Fairway to heaven - EA's return brings all four majors, proper RPG golf, and more

EA Sports PGA Tour

The return of an EA golf game has its surprisingly vocal community very excited, and with good reason: EA Sports PGA Tour looks incredibly promising. Over the seven years since the last EA game, there's been a bit of a hole for golf fans. The Golf Club series and more recent 2K titles have gently scratched the itch, but for many, there's always been something missing. From what I saw at a recent preview for EA's upcoming return, that looks set to change. Proper golf games are back.

EA Sports PGA Tour

Ever since the teaser trailer for EA Sports PGA Tour, narrated by Jordan Spieth and showing Augusta National, the messaging was clear: only in EA's game can you play the major tournaments, and become a true hall of famer. "We want to put you on the first tee in the shoes of a major champion," says lead producer David Baker. "Everything we've built, more than any other game before, has been designed to make you feel like a major championship golfer." Owning this territory and being the only game to offer all four majors – the most-requested feature from fans – immediately puts it above its predecessors. The last EA installment, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, only had two of the majors, and PGA 2K23 's major schedule is also light and a bit disappointing.

Tiger Uppercut

This approach to offering the best courses and tournaments extends to offering 30 'bucket list' courses at launch. Each one has been meticulously surveyed for their recreation. Using EA's Frostbite engine, these courses look fantastic, serving up the new-gen visuals committed swingers have waited for. The landscape designer in me loves the fact that these courses aren't just dev-made or researched. They've been made by liaising with geologists, utilizing low-flying helicopters, and the Masters' private database. Each tree is correctly placed, and each color of Azalea is right for the Augusta National course at the time of the Masters.

However pretty the settings, gameplay is paramount. Thankfully, EA appears to understand this. "While the game looks and reacts ultra realistically, at the end of the day, it's a video game," says producer Ben Ramsour. "The core mechanics have to be approachable, easy to learn, and fun." On first impressions, the golf swing mechanics, and shot-making underlying the 'Pure strike' system, look excellent. It channels authentic, smooth, and fun swing play with impressive nuances and shot craft.

EA Sports PGA Tour

Just like the courses themselves, this is all underpinned by real-world data. There are 20 shot types, unique trajectories for the ball based on clubs and shots, and redesigned ball behaviors – all contributing to a total of more than 1300 unique physics profiles. These then culminate in providing "unique golf swings that have a fluid feel, and lead to realistic outcomes on every golf shot". Given that swing mechanics are informed by ShotLink and Trackman data – genuine tools that real-world pros and players use – there could be no better virtual recreation of a golf swing, especially with the number of dedicated shot types and shaping options available to players.

"Every time you approach the ball, you don't only choose your club, but also the type of shot you want to hit," says gameplay designer Craig Penner. "These shot types add a wonderful new layer of depth to every shot, so that as your mastery and understanding of each shot type grows. You'll start to think and plan your way around the course just like a pro."

EA Sports PGA Tour

There's solid potential for the game's deep and multi-layered golf mechanics to elevate it well above that offered by the 2K games. The mix of specialist shots and shaping tactics looks greater already, and even the way it's presented appears purer and closer to real golf. For example, there's a swing arc that tracks the path of the club neatly but also shows you where you deviate from it; something that sits very nicely in terms of real-life golf simulation. Naturally, in real life, the swing arc is open to error and alteration, especially as you improve at the game, so seeing this as something that can change based on your play, and not just rely on a 'line on a ball' graphic in the HUD, is very welcome.

The same level of thought and authenticity is also present in the career mode. Often the standout of previous EA golf games, the depth and intricacies of taking your created player - male, female, or gender-neutral – from the toils of being a hack entering the amateur tour, all the way to winning majors is back with a vengeance. While 2K's series offers a simple career, and 2K23 saw some boosts to that, your player could still bomb 300-yard drives from the off. In EA Sports PGA Tour, you gradually improve and progress your player by spending earned XP, learning and adding new shot types to your arsenal, and by enhancing your skills. The choices you make can be meaningful to your game and also crucial to getting you in a position to master particular courses. 'Course Fit' is a feature that measures a course's demands against your skill level to give an indication of the level of challenge, and a blueprints system helps you tune your equipment too.

EA Sports PGA Tour

Those who prefer their pitch and putt to take place online are also well served. You can play social unranked matches with similarly skilled players, with friends to ensure level playing fields, or social modes offline for more casual play – be it match play, alternate shot, or other modes. You can play competitively too. This ranked matchmaking is designed "to test your skills in numerous game types, including nine and 18-hole parameters", Baker describes. Such online tournaments will be "limited-time events for players to go in by themselves and submit a score to a global leaderboard."

At the end of such an event, the game gives you a final rank earning you rank points based on finishing position. A particularly intriguing multiplayer mode that caught my eye was where you play holes simultaneously with other players – up to 16 of you – with all the sounds and shots flying everywhere at the same time.

Modern sports games such as FIFA 23 and NBA 2K23 are all about live content. EA is keen to keep up with the Woodses in a similar vein. It's planning more courses that mirror real-world tournaments. A three-click swing action is also in the works, and there will be other promising updates like regular challenges inspired by real-world events. "As new history is made at current tournaments, we can rapidly craft challenges to mirror what players are watching in the real world," says Baker. If there's a hole-in-one at a particular event, then players of EA Sports PGA Tour will be challenged to recreate it. Along with a ton of extra gear, attire, and clubs that are coming throughout 2023, there's going to be more 'game' coming after release to get our teeth into.

Maybe I have some rose-tinted glasses on, yearning so much for the halcyon days of Tiger Woods 2005, but the early signs of EA Sports PGA Tour are excellent. It looks like the "'proper golf RPG" and journey fans have yearned for is back for good. The handicaps of the last few years have seemingly been conquered, and EA Sports PGA Tour should please both new and long-term fans down to a tee.

EA Sports PGA Tour is one of the new games for 2023 worth watching, and it's set to release on March 24 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

The community has spoken, and EA will oblige. EA Sports PGA Tour Road to the Masters launched on April 7, and already updates are being made to the game to help improve the immersive experience while golfing on the world’s best golf courses.

Some updates must be added to the new EA Sports title , while others have already been implemented and are live. The update still to come is the one that will see significant improvements and additions made to the mechanics, game modes, online features, and more.

In this post, Prima Games will list all of the latest add-ons and improvements coming and what’s already been rectified in the game.

EA Sports PGA Tour Updates Coming

Road to the Masters looks to be making some noteworthy improvements that, in my opinion, should only increase the fun and the experience. Let’s look at them as we detail the most exciting new features coming soon.

3-Click Swing

The OG 3-Click Swing will return for EA Sports and be introduced to Road to the Masters later in April. A large population of the PGA Tour community wanted the popular golfing mechanics added to the game, and they’ll be getting what they want.

Once installed, it will offer a second option for those not into the analogue stick single-motion swinging mechanism. How it affects the Pure Strike and Fluid Swing Mechanics features is yet to be seen. Hopefully, it doesn’t take them away from it, as they are elements of the game with loads of potential.

Updates to Putting Grids

This update includes fixes and the addition of the green grid fading away following every put. The community pointed it out, and the dev team listened. It will allow for a better visual and end product when putting.

This new feature will unquestionably go down well with the public. Fast Play is a package allowing players to enable and disable cutscenes, player reactions, and more. Speeding up the game will make for a fun and better golf experience.

EA Sports PGA Tour: Five Great Holes for Newbies

Image of Colin Mieczkowski

In EA Sports PGA Tour , the biggest star is the courses. But since it’s been many years since the last EA game, and we’re always getting newbies checking it out, where do you go to learn the ropes?

Courses can provide a challenge in the game just like with real golf. This can be tricky for new virtual golfers figuring out how to approach shots on different courses. That’s where good old practicing comes in to play. Now, EA Sports PGA Tour doesn’t have a traditional practice mode but there’s is a great solution to this.

You can simply go into Play Now, choose your course, and then select specific holes. It’s a feature that’s always appreciated in the EA games. This is an excellent way to tackle one hole without needing to play the others. But which holes are best for working on your game? There are a ton of great options but we’ll narrow this down to five.

Teeth Of The Dog – 5th Hole

ea sports pga tour hole in one

Located in the Dominican Republic, Teeth of the Dog has been classified by the great Pete Dye as one of his all-time favorite courses that he and Alice designed. This is the same legendary couple behind courses like TPC Sawgrass, Whistling Straits, and Kiawah Island among many others, but Teeth is right towards the very top.

The course features plenty of breathtaking seaside holes and one of the best collections of par-3s around, including the 5th hole. The 5th is one of the prettiest par-3s in the sport and certainly is just that in EA Sports PGA Tour with nothing but the ocean’s horizon to the left of you.

It’s also arguably the easiest hole on the course as well, which makes it perfect for sharpening your par-3 skills. The green isn’t massive but it’s big enough and it’s also soft so your ball won’t roll as fast. There’s also a big strip of sand on the left of the green and one smaller one on the back right if you want to purposely hit your shots into these bunkers and practice your sand trap game. Newcomers will appreciate this little beauty.

Bay Hill – 6th Hole

ea sports pga tour hole in one

Bay Hill is a special place. When you think about it, you think of the late, great Arnold Palmer and the iconic umbrella symbol. You also know it’s a huge part of the early part of the PGA Tour season. Sports fans will typically say The Masters feels like the unofficial start to the PGA Tour season but so does the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The historic course boasts plenty of fun holes and is a very recognizable layout as it has made many appearances in golf games over the years. But there’s one hole in particular that’s really fantastic to play in a video game like EA Sports PGA Tour and that’s the par-5 sixth.

This hole is a dogleg left with a pretty chunky fairway and plenty of the water to the left side so this is a great place to put your drawing to the test off the tee. Can you stay in the fairway or will you end up in the drink? Also unique in the game, you can actually reach the green in one. Yes, that’s right, you can reach a par-5 in one. Playing online, you’ll see many players attempt this if they’re confident in their power off the tee. What better to try out your power than by seeing if you can reach the par-5 green in one? And once again, with the water to the left on approach shots, you can take the time to perfect your iron accuracy.

TPC Scottsdale – 17th Hole

ea sports pga tour hole in one

This is probably one of the most recognizable holes in all of golf gaming. If you played online in either EA PGA or PGA Tour 2K, you’ve probably tackled this short par-4 and the same goes for the famed 16th and the finishing 18th. This hole is always a delight to play as it’s a short, driveable par-4 in EA Sports PGA Tour while having a pretty big green too.

Short par-4s are always a ton of fun to play. There’s a thrill to reaching the green in one shot and you can accomplish this here. You can work on your driving skills, and if you leave your tee shot short of the green this is a terrific short-game spot, especially with the big green to work with — not to mention the bunkers if you want to master your splash game.

Speaking of which, it’s also awesome for putting because of this. On many occasions where you barely reach the green, you have a great opportunity to practice your long putts. And going back to the short game, the greens are softer at Scottsdale so the ball won’t roll like crazy on chips and pitches, which makes things a bit easier when training.

Augusta National – 14th Hole

ea sports pga tour hole in one

Ah yes, the Bunkerless Wonder known as Chinese Fir at Augusta National. Augusta is full of incredible hole designs but 14 definitely holds up due to the lack of bunkers. In the real world, it’s surprisingly considered one of the course’s more difficult holes .

And don’t get me wrong, it’s not super easy in EA Sports PGA Tour either, but without any hazards it could be a really good practice hole for new players with the freedom you have. You can key in on your drives and work on your draws and fades without worrying about hazards.

Also, the green provides a bit of a challenge (hence a big reason why it’s tough in real golf). It’s not overbearing but it features its share of slopes making it an excellent hole for perfecting your putting from different angles. It’s also great for reading greens before hitting your approach shot, and thus understanding where best to aim those shots.

Bandon Dunes – 13th Hole

ea sports pga tour hole in one

This just might be the best hole on this list as far as practicing goes. Power, approach shots, putting, everything can be worked on here. Being at Bandon Dunes, one of the world’s prettiest golf courses, is already a good thing but now you have this wonderfully simple par-5 to perfect your craft on in EA Sports PGA Tour .

This is another hazardless hole like the 14th at Augusta. Difference is, this is pretty much a straight shot while Chinese Fir is a slight dogleg. Also, this is a par-5 as mentioned. You can reach this green in two, which is always cool to see. This hole is basically a free play hole with how much you can do when teeing it up here without the need to worry about hazards or tight fairways. There is plenty of rough though if you want to work on recovery shots.

And, of course, it’s always good to get comfortable with bunker shots, but if you feel that it’s not needed then this hole (along with 14 at Augusta) are great. Driving accuracy won’t come into play much though since it’s a pretty straightforward fairway as we mentioned. Regardless, there are plenty of ways to get creative during your stroke play practice session at the 13th of Bandon.

Golf updates scorecard rule by allowing extra 15 minutes to fix errors and avoid disqualification

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — The temptation would be to refer to a change in the scorecard procedure as the “Jordan Rule,” only because Jordan Spieth was the most recent example . Players now have an additional 15 minutes to correct their scorecard before it is deemed to have been returned.

Players were informed at the U.S. Open of the change. The USGA adopted the amended definition of when a card is “returned” at the U.S. Women’s Open two weeks earlier. It now goes into effect on most major tours this week.

The PGA Tour said the goal was “minimizing penalties or disqualifications related to scorecard errors.”

Spieth was at Pinehurst No. 2 on the Sunday before the U.S. Open. He said Scott Langley, the USGA’s director of player relations, approached him and said: “This isn’t because of you. But this is what we’re doing here.”

The scorecard previously was considered “returned” when the player left the scoring area.

Spieth was battling stomach issues at Riviera when he made double bogey on the last hole for a 73, rushed up the hill to scoring, signed his card and hustled off to the bathroom. He inadvertently wrote down a 3 instead of a 4 on the par-3 fourth hole, and therefore signed for an incorrect score and was disqualified.

Cameron Young walks away from the 12th green during the third round of the Travelers Championship golf tournament at TPC River Highlands, Saturday, June 22, 2024, in Cromwell, Conn. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)

Under the new rule, he would have had 15 minutes to fix the mistake or for an official to find him and alert him to the error.

“For an honest mistake that I guess could be the difference in the tournament, I think it’s great,” Spieth said. “I don’t think it’s a skill of the game, especially at the professional level. If somebody plugged in a wrong score, they can go back and re-plug it in.”

As for the 15 minutes, there is a time stamp when a card is accepted, and the 15 minutes is not down to the second. It doesn’t happen very often, especially on the PGA Tour where scores are checked against a computer.

And there are exceptions. If a player stays in scoring for 15 minutes (Phil Mickelson was known to linger there), the scorecard would be considered returned when that player leaves the area. Also, the 15-minute rule could be affected by a playoff, or by tee times having to be posted immediately after a cut.

U.S. Open alternate Manke spends week getting Canada status

R.J. Manke moved up to the first alternate at the U.S. Open after Jon Rahm had to withdraw with a foot infection. In most cases, players have to wait around until the final tee time on Thursday before packing their bags and leaving.

Manke had been through that before.

He was the first alternate from the main allotment list at Torrey Pines in 2021, waited three days and no one withdrew. Oddly enough, his best chance that week was Rahm, who had to pass a COVID-19 test to be cleared to play. Rahm passed the test and won the U.S. Open.

This time, Manke wasn’t even at Pinehurst. He was 3,100 miles away in British Columbia playing a Q-school tournament for PGA Tour Americas with hopes of getting full status for the second half of the season in Canada.

“I had a number of flights to head out there at the last minute,” Manke said. “I was following the alternate closely.”

No one withdrew. Manke stuck with his plan to play in Canada.

He said if he had known he was the first alternate, it would made for an “interesting decision.” But a misunderstanding led to him actually being the first alternate.

“Once the entire reallotment came out, I was No. 7,” he said.

Manke knew the USGA was holding six spots for anyone who would have become exempt at the last minute through the world ranking. Two ranking spots went to Robert MacIntyre and Adam Scott, and four spots were distributed to alternates.

Scott, if he had not made it through the ranking, would have been ahead of Manke on that alternate list.

But when the updated list was sent to Manke on Monday, one alternate who already had been added to the U.S. Open field was still listed. That would explain why Manke thought he was the second alternate when Rahm withdrew.

It ended well for Manke, who had been playing mini-tours. He made it through the Q-school tournament and now has a place to play for the rest of the PGA Tour Americas season.

Olympic qualifying

This week’s Women’s PGA Championship is the final chance for women to earn a spot in the Olympics this summer in Paris. The Americans and South Koreans are not assured of having the representation they had the previous two times.

In the most glaring example of how much South Korea has fallen off in women’s golf, only two players are likely to make it to Paris.

Countries can get a maximum of four players if they are among the top 15 in the women’s world ranking. Jin Young Ko (No. 7) and Hyo Joo Kim (No. 12) have locked up spots. But the next South Koreans are Jiyai Shin (24) and Amy Yang (25). They would need a top finish at the Women’s PGA to move into the top 15.

The Americans had four players for the Tokyo Games held in 2021. They have three among the top 15 — Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu are Nos. 1 and 2, and Rose Zhang is at No. 9.

Megan Khang is at No. 16, a fraction behind Lydia Ko of New Zealand at No. 15. The Americans also have more possibilities with Alison Lee (18) and Ally Ewing (19).

Memorial moving back

Jack Nicklaus agreed to work with the PGA Tour on its new schedule, which meant moving the Memorial Tournament off Memorial Day — that’s what it was named for — and a week before the U.S. Open.

Now it’s going back.

Nicklaus announced Monday that next year’s tournament would start on Memorial Day (May 26) and end on June 1, two weeks before the U.S. Open at Oakmont. That leaves U.S. Open qualifying after the Memorial, not before.

“We were willing to work with them and move the 2024 date to a week before the U.S. Open,” Nicklaus said. He said after several conversations, they determined it was best for the Memorial to move back.

Hideki to Boston

In a move that might finally dampen speculation about Hideki Matsuyama going to LIV Golf, the Japanese star is joining the tech-infused TGL indoor league that debuts in January.

The former Masters champion has joined Boston Common Golf, the four-man team that includes Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott. He replaces Tyrrell Hatton, whom the PGA Tour suspended for joining LIV earlier this year.

Fenway Sports Group owns the Boston team, also known as the Ballfrogs.

“Together, I hope we can push the boundaries of golf and create an unforgettable new experience for fans around the world,” Matsuyama said in a statement.

Angel Cabrera won the Paul Lawrie Match Play on the European Legends Tour last week, his first victory since being released from prison in Argentina last summer for gender violence. ... A week after the PGA of America hired caddie-turned-NBC reporter John Wood as a Ryder Cup manager for the U.S. team, Europe added former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley as “strategic adviser” for the 2025 matches at Bethpage Black. ... Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele are the only players with top 10s at all three majors this year. ... Adam Schenk was the only player to miss the cut in all three signature events that had a 36-hole cut.
