Karnivool is an Australian progressive rock and alternative band, formed in 1997 by Ian Kenny and Andrew Goddard, hailing from Perth, Australia.
Formed as a high school band in 1997 to play Nirvana and Carcass covers at parties, Karnivool, led by singer Ian Kenny, later with a revamped line-up began writing original material. In 1999 with a line-up consisting of Kenny on vocals, Andrew Goddard on lead guitar, Andrew Brown on bass, and Brett McKenzie on drums, the band released their debut eponymously-titled EP. A follow-up EP “Persona” was released in 2001 and Karnivool subsequently won the Western Australia State Final of the National Campus Band Competition.
Karnivool’s debut full-length was written entirely by Goddard and marked a change of personnel with Steve Judd coming in on drums, Jon Stockman in on bass, and Mark Hosking joined as rhythm guitarist. The album was originally released independently in 2005 however the band later signed with Bieler Bros. Records who reissued the album in 2007. Karnivool supported the album with an extensive worldwide tour and later covered the Gotye song “The Only Way” in contribution to the compilation album “Mixed Blood”.
Ahead of the band’s sophomore album “Sound Awake”, Karnivool released the lead single “Set Fire to the Hive”, which peaked at No. 11 on the AIR Top 20 Singles chart. Aided by the single, the album released May 9, 2009, debuted at No. 2 on the AIR Album Chart. Karnivool embarked on another worldwide tour in support, including shows in the U.S., New Zealand, the UK and India. The band took a break after the tour allowing singer Ian Kenny to work with his other band Birds of Tokyo, however returned in 2011.
Karnivool’s third full-length “Asymmetry” was issued by Density/Cymatic Records in 2013 and topped the Australian Albums Chart. The album spawned the singles “The Refusal” and the six-minute long “We Are”, and is noted for being the band’s most complex and contemplative album to date.
Live reviews
This was a much better balanced set than the set list from Koko last year. That set list set out to showcase the new songs from Asymmetry, which was released in 2013, but this 'divergence tour' seems to have a different vibe. It seems much more that the band wish to summarise and look back on their career so far, with their first album 'Themata' just reaching its tenth anniversary.
Opening band Monuments are the headline band that have been taking one of Karnivool's Aussie contemporaries, dead letter circus, on tour on their trips to England, and they put on a good show here. The riffing is monochromatic and rhythmic, as their djent roots dictate, but their is energy to be had from an excellent drumming performance, as well as a lead singer with an powerful and tuneful range. A decent warm up for the main event.
Karnivool take the stage for a 90 minute set that, as aforementioned, tries to cover the bases of all three of their albums since 2005. Their is a great reaction in the first third of the set to old favourites like shutterspeed and roquefort, but the biggest cheer is inevitably saved for the title track from 'Themata', with its soaring, unusual and addictive chorus. The mosh also starts to go harder at this earlier, more nu metal stage of karnivool's songwriting career.
As the set moves into the middle third focusing on second album, sound awake, the crowd adoration really starts to flow. With more of a nuanced blend of hard rock moments and thoughtful ebbs and flows, the songs start to lengthen and draw the listeners in in a different way. There are still a few diehards stepping on my ankle during some of the isolated mosh worthy moments, but the excitement has switched to the music, not just the energy. The band certainly seem surprised at the crowd singing the words to their songs back to them with such gusto, and respond with some magical musical moments in return.
After a brief rest, the final part of the show is devoted to four songs from Asymmetry. The brooding and powerful pair of alpha /omega and aeons (still a slightly puzzling choice as closer) sandwich the high energy pair of 'we are' and 'the refusal'. The progressive metal has definitely come to the fore by this point, and the band leaves the crowd wondering, having journeyed through their career retrospective with them, where they might be going next when they turn up on these shores.
A venetian really excellent night, and a band to watch out for as they continue to grow in stature. They have moved from the Scala in 2010 to the roundhouse in 2015. Where will the limit be, I wonder?
Report as inappropriate
The hugely popular Aussie prog-metallers Karnivool certainly pull a large crowd, selling out stadiums the world over, and paving the way for others in non-mainstream bands to do the same- as guitarist Mark Hosking put it at a show in Sydney, "This is the time for independent bands, my friends!". Karnivool's particular brand driving drumbeats, staccato guitar riffs and clean vocals from frontman Ian Kenney is perfect when witnessed as one of many in a huge arena, singing along to every word. Kenney's awkwardly charismatic stage presence is epitomised by the earnestly theatrical belting out of his lyrics, grabbing his head in his hands or gesturing wildly to really make the audience feel every word he's singing. The level of musicianship of the rest of the band- on bass, drums and guitar- is just as impressive, resulting in note-perfect harmonies blended with heavy, thundering drum beats. The standout tracks at the Sydney show last year were the ear-devastating 'Themata', and the immense soaring hit of their finale, 'New Day'. They don't skimp on putting on an incredible light show either, which dramatised their whole headlining set magnificently.
Karnivool have come a long way from their local bar Nirvana cover-band days, and even bigger things seem to be on the horizon. An epic live experience!
I've seen these guys 17 times now, with a ticket to see them again when they support Deftones. They turn up time and time and time again and they deliver! They create music which is second to none.
Very cool bunch of lads.

Karnivool reschedule The Regeneration tour to early 2023
Australian prog rockers Karnivool reschedule Europe and UK tour dates for second time
Australian prog rockers Karnivool have once again rescheduled their European The Regeneration Tour to January and February 2023. it's the second time the Perth quintet have moved the dates of their Regeneration tour, from 2021 to May 2022 , and now from May to early next year.
“Having already rescheduled our European shows once, we have tried every which way to make them happen this year, but we are in the unavoidable position where we must move The Regeneration Tour - again," the band state. "We could put out some lame excuse but that would be a disservice to all of you and to everyone who has tried so hard to make it happen.
"So here is the reality for a band from Perth, Western Australia: touring internationally is a risky business especially for artists who don’t want to compromise their show and we have always accepted that, but for us right now a significant financial blow - on top the pummelling we took in the last two years - would be, frankly, the end of the band.
"Between the extra costs around touring in a covid-safe manner or having to cancel shows overseas at extremely short notice, insurance for covid being unavailable and now large currency fluctuations due to the awful conflict in Europe, well, the numbers are stacked up against the tour – and we haven’t even done the sums on the extra fuel costs yet. When you travel from Australia to Europe, every show has to happen, it makes no sense otherwise. A week of sitting on a tour bus not being able to do anything when you have flown halfway around the world is a sobering prospect, as is touring but not being able to meet your friends, fans and family without putting the rest of the tour in jeopardy.
"Not being able to tour properly for over two years and having to move the AU Monolith shows to later this year means we have no fiscal safety net should we have to, say, cancel shows mid-tour. It’s a miserable situation for every touring artist. We are seeing tour after tour drop shows or be cancelled because of sickness, which if that happened to us would create a financial hit which we just could not take 14,000km from home."
You can view the new tour dates below. Sadly the band's show in Malmo could not be rescheduled.
"To compound the situation, we are unable to make the show in Malmö happen on this third re-routing," the band add. "Full refunds will be available to our fans there and to anyone who cannot make the rescheduled dates. Otherwise, all tickets remain valid."

Karnivool Announce Headline Shows For Western Australia’s ‘Back On The Road’ Tour
By Laura English
Perth faves Karnivool have announced a string of seven shows across their home state as part of Western Australia’s ‘Back On The Road Tour’. Scheduled for later this month, the tour will see them visit Geraldton, Exmouth, Port Headland, Broome, Kalgoorlie, Freo, and Perth.
Announcing the news via Instagram, the band wrote, “Since moving the Decade of Sound Awake tour to March, we don’t want to wait that long to play shows, even though we can’t leave our home state.”
“We’ve just spent weeks writing and demoing new music in Coolgardie and Fairbridge (regional Western Australia) and it sparked the idea for us to get on board and join one of the Back on the Road tours,” they continued.
“These shows are under current guidelines, so tickets are extremely limited – and on sale now from our website. Looking forward to getting back to it.”

Karnivool initially announced their Sound Awake Anniversary Tour in late February. Scheduled for April, the tour was naturally cancelled as a result of COVID-19.
It’s now been rescheduled twice, with the shows expected to go ahead in March of next year .
The Back On The Road series kicked off back in August. It’s seen Drapht and Spacey Jane play shows across the state as well.

Karnivool Announce 'Tri-Continental Drift' Australian Tour
One of the prog metal scene's most loved acts, Karnivool have announced an Australian tour for May. The Tri-Continental Drift tour will set off in May with the band making stops in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Frankston and Adelaide. Karnivool haven't toured Australia since their barnstorming headline slot on the larger-than-life Monolith Tour in 2022 , so it’s been a while between drinks, even for Karnivool! What’s the occasion? In June, the band returns to Europe for a run of massive festival appearances including Download (UK), Copenhell (Denmark) and Hellfest (France), and it really would be rude to head off overseas again and not give Australians a taste first, especially after having a sold-out headline run through the northern hemisphere last January. So, Kenny , Drew , Hoss , Jon and Steve are dusting off the guitars, opening the many cases of pedals and the collection of bent cymbals, and hitting it.
As for the band's hometown in Perth, the band have the following words for local fans "Relax Perth, we live here. We will sort something out for you, too, just when we have a bit more time!".
Tickets for the Tri-Continental Drift tour go on sale on Thursday 22 February at 9 am AEDT at Karnivool.com .

Karnivool haven’t toured Australia since their barnstorming headline slot on the larger-than-life Monolith Tour in 2022, so it’s been a while between drinks, even for Karnivool!
So, Kenny, Drew, Hoss, Jon and Steve are dusting off the guitars, opening the many cases of pedals and the collection of bent cymbals, and hitting it. Tickets won’t last long, so be there!
PS: Relax Perth, we live here. We will sort something out for you, too, just when we have a bit more time!

Karnivool return with massive 'Praxis' national tour this May
Words by Sose Fuamoli
- X (formerly Twitter)
The 'Vool are back.
Spurred on by the success of their exclusive run of shows along the west coast and in SA, not to mention a blistering pop up at Unify this year, Karnivool are stretching their muscles for 2019, unveiling a national tour that will take the group around Australia this May and June.
By definition, praxis means the 'using a theory or something you have have learned in a practical way' and in Karnivool's case, they've definitely got their craft for producing hard-hitting live shows well-honed. Tickets are on sale now at www.karnivool.com .
Karnivool 2019 'Praxis' Australian Tour

- Saturday, 18th May - Bass In The Grass, Darwin
- Saturday, 25th May - Big Pineapple Festival, Sunshine Coast
- Sunday, 26th May - The Triffid, Brisbane with special guest Southeast Desert Metal
- Wednesday, 29th May - The Northern Hotel, Byron Bay with special guest Southeast Desert Metal
- Thursday, 30th May - The Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle with special guest Southeast Desert Metal

- Wednesday, 5th June - The Croxton, Melbourne with special guest Southeast Desert Metal
- Friday, 7th June - Pier Hotel, Frankston with special guest Southeast Desert Metal
- Saturday 8th June - Rock Rover, Fremantle
Joining them on the road are Southeast Desert Metal ; hailing from Alice Springs, the band has been generating quite a bit of attention themselves for producing some punishing metal, from one of the most remote corners of the country. Definitely ones to get around.
The 'Praxis' Tour is Karnivool's way of flexing the headliner energy fans have loved receiving at shows around the country for years now and these shows are looking to be nothing less than huge. The band's first headline tour since 2016, this return from Karnivool is well overdue.
While there's no updates on whether or not we can be expecting new music from the band to coincide with the tour, unleashing the above tour dates is a fine start to the process, we reckon.

The tour will also offer loads of sustainability efforts including Eilish’s long-standing partnership with environmental nonprofit Reverb which has previously resulted in over $1million donated to environmental, greenhouse gas reduction, and climate justice projects, more than 150,000 fan actions, and much more.
She will also team up with Support+Feed which will promote and offer plant-based food options. Support+Feed will also be launching a 360 campaign throughout the tour. An expanded version of the Support+Feed Pledge will be offered as a way to inspire fans to eat one plant-based meal a day for 30 days with digital elements and community activations.
Fans will have the opportunity to participate in Plant-based Food Drives in a selection of cities alongside the tour to raise awareness and gather food to distribute to local communities.
There will also be two Reverb eco-villages set up in the main concourse of every show where fans can take part in the tour’s sustainability efforts, connect with nonprofits, and take meaningful action for people and the planet.
Fans are encouraged to take public transport or carpool to the gigs in efforts to help reduce greenhouse gas pollution and encourage more public transportation options. Attendees will receive information via email about public transportation options before the show.
Venue partners are also helping to lessen the environmental footprint of the tour. In addition to efforts to decrease waste through reducing or eliminating single-use plastics and diverting landfill waste with compost and recycling, venues will be offering plant-based food options at all shows.
Fans and attendees are encouraged to bring an empty reusable water bottle or donate for a custom RockNRefill Nalgene bottle to fill up at the free water refill stations located at each venue. The RockNRefill bottles and refill stations are located at the Eco-Villages in the main concourse at all shows.
In other news, Eilish is one of the musicians who have signed an open letter calling for a bill to be passed to protect gig goers from ticket scams .
