Air travel is getting worse. That's what passengers are telling the US government

The transportation department said friday that it received nearly 97,000 complaints in 2023, up from about 86,000 the year before., by the associated press • published 3 hours ago • updated 3 hours ago.

Air travel got more miserable last year, if the number of consumer complaints filed with the U.S. government is any measure.

The Transportation Department said Friday that it received nearly 97,000 complaints in 2023 , up from about 86,000 the year before. The department said there were so many complaints that it took until July to sort through the filings and compile the figures.

That's the highest number of consumer complaints about airlines since 2020, when airlines were slow to give customers refunds after the coronavirus pandemic shut down air travel.

24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are

The increase in complaints came even as airlines canceled far fewer U.S. flights — 116,700, or 1.2% of the total, last year, compared with about 210,500, or 2.3%, in 2022, according to FlightAware data. However, delays remained stubbornly high last year, at around 21% of all flights.

So far this year, cancellations remain relatively low — about 1.3% of all flights — but delays are still running around 21%.

More than two-thirds of all complaints last year dealt with U.S. airlines, but a quarter covered foreign airlines. Most of the rest were about travel agents and tour operators.

Complaints about treating passengers with disabilities rose by more than one-fourth compared with 2022. Complaints of discrimination, while small in number, also rose sharply. Most were about race or national origin.

Airlines receive many more complaints from travelers who don't know how or don't bother to complain to the government, but the carriers don't release those numbers.

The Transportation Department is modernizing its complaint-taking system, which the agency says will help it do a better job overseeing the airline industry. However, the department now releases complaint numbers many months late. It did not issue figures for the second half of 2023 until Friday.

Delta flight diverts to New York after passengers are served spoiled food

A Delta flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to New York’s Kennedy Airport after passengers were served spoiled food

NEW YORK -- A Delta flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to New York's Kennedy Airport on Wednesday after passengers were served spoiled food, airline officials said.

The redeye flight took off from Detroit around 11 p.m. Tuesday and landed in New York at 4 a.m. “after reports that a portion of the Main Cabin in-flight meal service were spoiled,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport, said 14 of the plane's 277 passengers as well as 10 crew members were treated by medical personnel when the flight landed. None of them required hospitalization.

It was not clear how many people in total ate the spoiled food.

Delta said it would investigate the incident.

“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels,” the Delta spokesperson said.

The Port Authority said passengers were being provided with hotel rooms and that all would be rebooked to continue to their destinations.

Hurricane Beryl churning toward Mexico with strong winds, heavy rain

Editor's note: This page reflects news on Hurricane Beryl from Thursday, July 4. For the latest news on Hurricane Beryl , please follow USA TODAY's live updates on the storm for Friday, July 5 .

Beryl maintained major hurricane strength Thursday as it whipped past the Cayman Islands and toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It left a path of destruction in Jamaica with damaging winds and heavy rainfall, with at least 11 dead across the region.

The center of Beryl is moving across the northwestern Caribbean Sea Thursday afternoon and is expected to bring "strong winds, dangerous storm surge and damaging waves" to the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula early Friday, according to a 2 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. Beryl was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane Thursday and had winds of 110 mph at about 135 miles west of Grand Cayman – the largest of the Cayman Islands.

Beryl is expected to dump up to half a foot of rain on the Cayman Islands Thursday and up to 10 inches in areas of the Yucatan Peninsula, which could lead to flash flooding.

Storm surge could raise water levels as much as 3 to 5 feet on the Yucatan's east coast and by as much as 1 to 3 feet above ground level along its west coast, bringing "large and destructive waves."

Weather officials warned Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening surf and rip currents along the coast of Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands. The currents could spread to the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America later Thursday and then to eastern Mexico and much of the U.S. Gulf Coast by late Friday.

As hurricane conditions died down in the Cayman Islands, winds are expected to reach tropical storm strength in the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, making it difficult to be outside amid dangerous conditions expected later in the day, the hurricane center said.

The hurricane center discontinued hurricane warnings for the Cayman Islands, but warnings remain in place for the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel. A tropical storm watch is also in effect for a large portion of the coast of Belize.

Officials confirmed that at least nine people were killed in Grenada, Venezuela, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Reuters reported. Jamaica’s prime minister Andrew Holness told CNN Thursday that two deaths have been registered in the country due to Hurricane Beryl.

Drone footage: As Hurricane Beryl tears through Caribbean, a drone sends back stunning footage

Developments:

∎ The death toll from Beryl rose to at least 11 on Thursday. But officials said deaths are expected to climb as communications come back online across islands that have been damaged by flooding and intense winds.

∎ Nerissa Gittens-McMillan, permanent secretary at St. Vincent and the Grenadines' agriculture ministry, warned of possible food shortages after 50% of plantain and banana crops were lost in the storm.

∎ Forecasters warned of strong rip currents along much of the Gulf Coast through the weekend. Surf conditions will likely become dangerous on the south coast of Texas.

∎  As Beryl approaches Mexico, the Tulum International Airport, officially known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport or Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum, will close from 2 p.m. Thursday until noon on Sunday, according to the airport's website.

Will Hurricane Beryl hit Texas?

Portions of South Texas are now  within the forecast cone of Hurricane Beryl , which meteorologists say could arrive in the state over the weekend or early Monday.

But forecasters remain unsure what Beryl will do and how strong it will be when it approaches the Gulf Coast after hitting Mexico: "High uncertainty remains with both the track and intensity of Beryl," the  National Weather Service said Wednesday.

"From Panama City, Florida to New Orleans, there is a low risk of direct impacts from Beryl, but from about Corpus Christi to Brownsville, Texas, the risk increases significantly due to the potential for Beryl to have more direct impacts," AccuWeather meteorologist Jonathan Porter said. "That southern portion of the Texas coast is the zone we have to really watch."

Coastal threats could begin this weekend, according to Weather.com : "Well ahead of Beryl, onshore winds could lead to increasing surf, rip currents and coastal flooding along parts of the Gulf Coast from eastern Mexico to Texas and western Louisiana beginning as soon as Saturday, and continuing until just after Beryl's final landfall." The rip current threat could extend further east along the northern Gulf Coast.

Brennan said Tuesday, "Folks in the Texas coast, as we go into the holiday weekend, you're going to want to make sure you check back on the forecast and make sure you're ready for any potential impact. If we were to see tropical storm conditions affect those areas in the far western Gulf of Mexico, it could be during the day Saturday."

Governor Greg Abbott has directed the state's emergency management agencies to prepare for hurricane response and recovery efforts. As Beryl's path shifted toward South Texas, officials in Corpus Christi and Brownsville began distributing sandbags to residents and the Port of Brownsville limited ship traffic .

"As Texans around the south coastal areas make holiday plans and visitors begin to travel for the holiday weekend, I urge them to take necessary safety precautions, remain weather aware, and have an emergency plan ready for themselves and their families," Abbott said in a statement .

Hurricane Beryl tracker: Storm's path toward Jamaica, the Cayman Islands

Hurricane Beryl threatens the Yucatan Peninsula

Beryl was forecast to weaken gradually over the next two days; however, it is still expected to be at or near hurricane intensity when it heads toward the Yucatan Peninsula by late Thursday.

A hurricane watch and tropical storm warning remained in effect for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula's coast. Mexico's government upgraded its tropical storm watch to a tropical storm warning from Progreso to Campeche, the hurricane center said.

The hurricane center warned that Beryl should make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula as early as Thursday night. In addition to heavy rain and wind, forecasters said dangerous storm surge flooding will threaten coastal areas.

"Widespread power outages and flash flooding are anticipated in the region," according to AccuWeather.

Jamaica faces 'catastrophic' impact of Hurricane Beryl

There were widespread power outages across Jamaica after Beryl brushed the island's southern coast on Wednesday. The hurricane thrashed Jamaica as a Category 4 storm, bringing destructive winds and rain.

Beryl pummeled communities as emergency workers evacuated people from flood-prone areas.

"It's terrible. Everything's gone. I'm in my house and scared," said Amoy Wellington, a 51-year-old cashier who lives in Top Hill, a rural farming community in southern St. Elizabeth Parish. "It's a disaster."

At least one person was killed in Jamaica's Hanover Parish after a tree fell on her home, according to Richard Thompson, acting director general at Jamaica's disaster agency. Nearly a thousand residents were in shelters by Wednesday evening, Thompson said.

Emergency crews had evacuated people from flood-prone areas and airports were closed after Holness, the country's prime minister, issued an islandwide curfew Wednesday.

“We’re concerned about widespread damage and potentially catastrophic impacts in Jamaica,” said Bernie Rayno, AccuWeather's chief on-air meteorologist. "Flooding may last days to even weeks. Widespread power outages are expected. Beryl will likely damage many homes and businesses and cause severe coastal inundation."

Some Caribbean islands report significant damages after Beryl

At least three islands report more than 90% of the homes and buildings either destroyed or severely damaged, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency  reported Wednesday . All three are within the chain of Grenadine Islands, where Beryl roared into the Caribbean on the southern end of the Windwards, between St. Vincent and Grenada.

With  19 participating states across the Caribbean , the agency was helping coordinate disaster response in Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines even as it continued to track Beryl’s movements across Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Belize.

The damage estimates for the Windwards – where Beryl made landfall over the island of Carriacou – are only "a very preliminary look," said Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director. Beryl struck the islands with sustained winds of 150 mph and higher gusts on Monday, and the National Hurricane Center had warned that winds could be up to 30% higher on the tops of hills and mountains.

The impacts on the Grenadine Islands are "quite significant," Riley said, leaving residents exposed and vulnerable. Even as recovery efforts began, a tropical wave brought rain and gusty winds Wednesday to the suffering residents.

A boozed up passenger forced an American Airlines flight to make an emergency landing in Buffalo after he was caught exposing himself and urinating in the aisle of the airplane, federal prosecutors said.

Oregon native Neil McCarthy, 25, admitted to cops that he was “flicking the bean” — a euphemism for masturbating — aboard the flight to New Hampshire Wednesday, and blamed it on a medical urination problem, court papers allege.

An American Airlines plane had to land after a passenger urinated in the aisle.

McCarthy told police that he was drinking heavily throughout his journey — and that he had several “Jack and cokes” before boarding his initial flight in Portland, according to the criminal complaint  filed in Buffalo federal court.

His flight eventually had a layover in Chicago — where he allegedly told police that he continued to guzzle down several more whiskey and colas before boarding the next flight to Manchester, New Hampshire.

A view of a closed Buffalo-Niagara International Airport in Cheektowaga, NY.

An American Airlines flight attendant saw McCarthy exposing himself and urinating on the flight —  and a passenger snapped a photo of him in the act, federal prosecutors claimed.

The plane was diverted to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, where McCarthy was arrested at Gate 2.

He was charged with indecent exposure, which carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison.

McCarthy was released after a hearing Wednesday before US Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarhty in Buffalo federal court.

The flight was able to depart from Buffalo shortly after McCarthy was placed into custody and escorted off the plane, American Airlines said in a statement.

“We thank our team members for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding,” the airline wrote.

Storm impacts busiest summer travel day at NYC-area airports. Check your flight status.

By Renee Anderson , Lori Bordonaro

Updated on: July 1, 2024 / 5:59 AM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- Sunday was expected to be the busiest day of the summer travel season at area airports, but severe thunderstorms caused numerous delays and cancellations.

AAA predicts 5.7 million people will fly in the days leading up to July 4, an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year. But the New York City area's three major airports had problems as the holiday week began.

"This is just torture"

Carlo Tonalezzi frantically tried to make it to Atlanta after waiting six hours at Newark Liberty, but his flight was eventually cancelled.

"This is just torture," he said. "Car rental, hotels, everything booked, big headache."

The TSA was expecting more fliers to pass through checkpoints Sunday than any other day, but severe storms caused major flight delays and cancellations.

"We didn't know about any of the weather until we got here," said Megan Crabtree of Nashville.

"I'm upset. I need to get home to my job," said Shatal Johnson of Atlanta. "They don't even have flights for tomorrow."

Frustrated fliers spent hours in lines trying to rebook. Grace Harris of Atlanta was one of the few still smiling.

"Just trying to have a positive attitude, grab a dinner, enjoy another day off work and keep moving forward," Harris said.

Construction at JFK Airport

JFK Airport is undergoing a $19 billion construction project to build two new international terminals, along with a new road network and transportation center.

CBS New York spoke with industry experts who said while there is never a good time for construction and road closures, the peak summer travel season might be the worst. The airport already expects to see 1 million more passengers this summer than last.

To help ease congestion and encourage people to use mass transit, AirTrain fares will be cut in half from Monday, July 1 through Labor Day on Sept. 2. Single rides at both the Jamaica and Howard Beach stations will cost just $4.25.

AAA: Independence Day travel to create busy roads; airports will be 'packed' with people

aa travel news york

As communities prepare to celebrate Independence Day with their friends and families, they may want to plan for some extra time for travel as a record number of people head out for the holidays this year.

In their most recent travel predictions, AAA is projecting that over 70 million people will travel 50 miles or more from their home between Saturday, June 29, to Sunday, July 7. While previous years' data has only focused on the holiday weekend, changing travel demands across the United States are showing that people are traveling as early as the weekend before the holiday to maximize their vacations.

“Americans are embracing the opportunity to travel over the Independence Day holiday in record-breaking numbers,” said Bevi Powell, senior vice president of AAA East Central. “Whether by car, plane or train, we are seeing more people planning extended trips over the holiday to celebrate with family and friends.”

Car travel: expect higher than usual traffic, practice safety

As families travel for fireworks and other festivities, travel forecasts estimate that over 60 million people will be traveling by car throughout the week, creating plenty of traffic for communities across the United States.

In the Mid-Atlantic Region of their forecast, experts at AAA East Central are calling for over 8 million motorists to fill the roads in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. With lower gas prices than last year, experts say that more families are willing to pack up their cars for long trips to destinations across the United States, taking in the sights along major highways.

Not everyone will be driving their personal cars, though. According to early data from Hertz, car rentals are in high demand, especially in cities such as Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Pick ups for car rentals are expected to be busiest on June 28, June 29 and again on July 3.

With the influx of vehicles, traffic will have several points throughout the week where travel is difficult. For metro areas, traffic is expected to be the worst before the holiday and on Independence Day, especially as families travel for their afternoon plans during rush hour traffic.

"Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

According to travel data from INRIX, the traffic forecast is as follows:

  • Minimal traffic impact expected
  • Worst travel time: 2 to 6 p.m.
  • Best travel time: After 7 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: 2 to 7 p.m.
  • Best travel time: Before Noon
  • Worst travel time: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Best travel time: Before 10 a.m.
  • Worst travel time: 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Worst travel time: 2 to 8 p.m.
  • Best travel time: Before 11 a.m.
  • Worst travel time: 1 to 5 p.m.

When embarking on these planned road trips, experts recommend that families double-check their car seats are installed correctly for their younger passengers and that all items are safely secured in the car so they do not go flying during sudden stops. Families should plan for the unexpected by considering snacks, drinks, blankets, jumper cables, road flares and a first aid kit. Planning out the route with several stops can also be a big benefit.

Families should also bring entertainment, especially for younger children. Toys, books and electronics should be packed within reach to make the travel experience easier for everyone. For tablets and other electronics, make sure that everything is downloaded and fully charged to avoid any disappointment when on the road without a signal.

Air travel: packed airports are expected during lower airfare this travel season, domestic and international destinations to be busy

While there is a growing number of alternative travel options, which have seemingly grown in popularity in recent years, the ease of airplane travel still dominates the other half of travel.

Experts forecast that over 5 million Americans will take to the skies throughout the week, with packed airports throughout the country for Independence Day travel. Over 911,000 of those air travelers will be departing from the Mid-Atlantic Region, with experts pointing to a 2% cheaper airfare this year leading to surges in travelers.

The forecast reflects local trends at the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), which is reporting that several airlines will break travel records at the airport during July. On its Blue Sky News website , the airport reported having the busiest May travel season in 17 years, with 18,255 passengers departing PIT on Memorial Day. During that holiday weekend, the airport also reported TSA agents around the country screened more than 2.95 million travelers, breaking the single-day record set on Thanksgiving.

The average domestic roundtrip ticket is currently averaging around $800 for holiday travel, with some popular destinations including Seattle, Orlando, Anchorage, Honolulu and Miami. International travel is slightly more expensive depending on where travelers are headed, but popular destinations include Vancouver, London, Rome, Dublin and Paris.

America’s Divided Summer Economy Is Coming to an Airport or Hotel Near You

The gulf between higher- and lower-income consumers has been widening for years, but it is expected to show up especially clearly in travel this season.

Jets at an airport, with tall buildings in the background.

By Jeanna Smialek

Reporting from Washington and Paris

The travel industry is in the midst of another hot summer as Americans hit the road and make for the airport to take advantage of slightly cheaper flights and gas. But the 2024 vacation outlook isn’t all sunny: Like the rest of the American consumer experience this year, it is sharply divided.

Many richer consumers — always the lifeblood of the travel industry — are feeling good this year as a strong stock market and rising home values boost their wealth. While they have felt the bite of rapid inflation over the last few years, they are likely to have more wiggle room in their budgets and more options to ease the pain by trading down from name brands to generic, or Whole Foods to Walmart.

Poorer families have had less room to maneuver to avoid the brunt of high prices. Although the job market is strong, with low unemployment and wages that have risen especially rapidly at the bottom of the income scale in recent years, some signs of economic strain have been surfacing among lower-income Americans. Credit card delinquencies have risen , many lower earners report feeling less confident in their own household finances, and companies that serve lower-income groups report that they are under stress.

The gulf between higher- and lower-income consumers has been widening for years, but it is expected to show up especially clearly in travel this summer. Surveys show that richer households are more optimistic about their ability to take trips, and services that they are more likely to use — like full-service hotels — are flourishing. Budget hotel chains, by contrast, are expected to report a pullback.

“If you go to upscale, you’re actually seeing growth there,” said Adam Sacks, the president of tourism economics at Oxford Economics. “A lot of that has to do with the different financial situations of different income groups.”

Bookings, survey responses and spending trends so far suggest that the travel industry will see muted but healthy growth this summer and in 2024 as a whole. That growth is expected even after several years of breakneck vacationing as people took “revenge” for the trips they missed during the pandemic.

Outbound international travel is still booming , domestic leisure travel is holding up, and even business travel is coming back after a sharp decline that started in 2020. While airfare-dollar spending might fall somewhat because flight prices have come down, airports are reporting record traffic on key days. AAA is forecasting that Fourth of July travel will smash last year’s strong performance.

“We’re seeing lots of people on the road; we’re seeing people taking flights,” said Joshua Friedlander, the vice president of research at the U.S. Travel Association. “We think this is a sustainable level of growth.”

But that resilience is not uniform across income groups. Spending on travel “picked up and was largely driven by consumers with discretionary income,” the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond reported in the Fed’s latest anecdotal release about national economic experiences. “Conversely, low-to-moderate-income consumers were reportedly pulling back” because of “higher costs leading to tighter household budgets.”

That adds to an established trend: Rich people tend to spend a lot more on splurges like travel. The top two-fifths of the income distribution accounts for about 60 percent of spending in the economy; the bottom two-fifths, about 22 percent. The divide is more extreme when it comes to vacationing. Lower-income people have historically spent about 19 cents on the dollar that a high-income person devotes to lodging, transportation and other travel-related purchases, based on one analysis.

Recent economic trends could exacerbate that. Lashonda Barber, an airport worker in Charlotte, N.C., is among those feeling the pinch. She will spend her summer on planes, but she won’t be leaving the airport for vacation.

Ms. Barber, 42, makes $19 per hour, 40 hours per week, driving a trash truck that cleans up after international flights. It is a difficult position: The tarmac is sweltering in the Southern summer sun; the rubbish bags are heavy. And while it’s poised to be a busy summer, Ms. Barber’s job is increasingly failing to pay the bills. Both prices and her home taxes are up notably, but she is making just $1 an hour more than she was when she started the gig five years ago. While that is not the standard experience — overall, wages for lower-income people have grown faster than inflation since at least late 2022 — it is a reminder that behind the averages, some people are falling behind.

“I don’t take personal trips,” Ms. Barber said, explaining that it had been several years since she had taken a family vacation, and that when she did, she drove.

That comes in stark contrast to what is happening at the other end of the income spectrum.

Parker Hess is director of rooms at the Allison Inn & Spa in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where rooms start at $645, amenities include plush robes and bucolic wine country surroundings, and business is booming.

“Our rates are the highest they’ve ever been,” Mr. Hess said, and while a customer will occasionally push back, many do not even ask about the price.

Hotel room rates are forecast to divide sharply this year. Jan Freitag, national director of hospitality analytics at the CoStar Group, said he was forecasting that full-service hotels like Marriott and Sheraton would post 2.1 percent room-rate growth this year, while midscale room rates would be essentially flat. He expects economy hotel room rates to outright decline as poorer travelers retrench.

“The lower-income consumer seems to be making a choice between things that they have to have versus the things that they want to have,” Mr. Freitag said. “You have to pay your credit card bill, you have to pay your car insurance, and those things are expensive right now.”

That gap is also evident in surveys. In a Bank of America Institute summer travel survey, a higher percentage of households with annual household incomes below $75,000, roughly the national median, said they did not have plans to go away this year compared with previous years.

“This may indicate some extra caution developing among these consumers around making the financial commitment necessary to take a holiday,” analysts wrote in their report.

That said, the analysts noted that the pullback was not yet evident in actual credit and debit card data, which has so far shown that lower-income consumers continue to spend. That’s an important caveat: Just because people report financial strain in surveys does not necessarily mean they will cut back.

And from an industry perspective, even if the surveys are prescient and poorer households do pull back on vacations this year, demand from richer people alone could be enough to fuel a strong — if not enthusiastic — performance for the summer travel season.

That strong demand could add fuel to the overall economy. Domestic travel adds to U.S. economic growth. International trips do not, but they signal consumer confidence.

On a full Sunday afternoon flight from Charles de Gaulle Airport outside Paris to Washington, D.C., Erica Reasoner, 42, was returning from two weeks in Italy and France with her husband and two children.

She and her family had stayed with friends and relatives for about half of their trip, and Ms. Reasoner said they had not taken an international trip last year. A resident of Denver, she said that her job in custom homebuilding was stable and business solid, and that while she had noticed higher grocery prices, recent inflation had not caused problems for her family’s budget.

“We planned this trip for so long that the state of the economy didn’t really play into our decision,” she said. Not everyone, she said she realized, was so fortunate.
