Zadar is the main city in North Dalmatia , with about 75,000 inhabitants. Most famous for its Old Town, set in a peninsula that is completely pedestrianised, the town has numerous Roman and other wonderful sights – some rather modern – and is a delight to visit.

The town is also very easy to reach , whether flying in from elsewhere in Europe (it has its own airport) or by bus from other destinations in Croatia. There are also internal flights to the town’s airport from other places in Croatia.
Zadar is perhaps sometimes overlooked as a place to visit in Croatia, possibly because it is slightly out of the way of the delights further south in Dalmatia. However, it really is a charming town and you won’t regret spending some time here. Why not start your holiday here before heading further down the coast? It’s also a very suitable base for day trips to locations such as Plitvice Lakes , the Kornati islands or Krka National Park .
Read up more on the town, how to get there and what to see in our guide below.

How to get to Zadar
Fortunately, there is a small international airport only eight kilometres from the centre of Zadar. There are an impressive number of connections to many nearby European cities, with more destinations being added in 2019. For 25 kn, you can easily catch a bus from the entrance of the airport to the city.
If you’re coming from a larger Croatian city or even Austria or Slovenia, there are buses that can take you right to Zadar. FlixBus is a reliable and affordable coach service that runs throughout Europe, so be sure to explore this option from your departure city.
From Zagreb, you can catch a train to Zadar with a transfer at Knin. During the summertime, there are also trains to Croatia from Vienna, Prague and Budapest, although you will again have to switch over at Knin for a local train to Zadar.

What to expect in Zadar
Croatian is the language spoken by locals in Zadar. However, most of the population along the coastline of Croatia are used to tourists and can speak English fairly well. You’ll be able to communicate easily with anyone you encounter in the tourism and hospitality industries.
Croatia’s currency is kuna (kn), although the country is expected to transition to the euro in the coming years. One kuna currently equals about 22 cents in Australian Dollars or 0.13 euro. Debit and credit cards are accepted at most places, so you won’t always need to carry banknotes with you.
Tipping isn’t necessary at bars or local cafes, although you can make the paying process easier by rounding up the bill to the nearest five or 10 kn. At fancy restaurants, however, tips of five to 10% are more common.
How to get around Zadar
All of Zadar’s Old Town is walkable, and it is rare to see any cars around. Unless your accommodation is further out, you’ll be able to explore most of the area on foot. To get to the Old Town, you can use any local taxi service, like Lulić Taxi.
The only form of public transport in Zadar is the bus, run by a company called Liburnija. Tickets cost 10 kn and can be pre-purchased at a kiosk or on board any bus. Buses run frequently between the Old Town, the main bus station, and throughout the suburbs.

The best time to visit Zadar
The Mediterranean climate of Zadar equals cold winters and warm, humid summers. The best time to stop by for a visit is anywhere between May to September.
You’re guaranteed the best possible weather between June and August, with average temperatures of 24 to 28 degrees Celsius. From November to March, however, there are rarely any days above 10 degrees Celsius, meaning you’ll miss out on any beach activities.

Things to do in Zadar
Wondering what to see and what to do in Zadar ? Here are some of the best ways to spend your time while visiting this charming Croatian city:
Zadar’s most unique attraction is the Sea Organ, designed in 2005 by the Croatian architect Nikola Bašić. Holes are drilled into marble steps along the shoreline, linking to 35 organ pipes below the surface of the water.
The crashing waves help to create magical tones that are simultaneously eerie and calming. If you ever hear faint mystical music in Zadar and wonder what’s going on, the noise is almost definitely coming from the Sea Organ!

Monument to the Sun
Another rare attraction in Zadar is the Monument to the Sun. This 22-metre diameter circle is constructed using 300 multi-layered glass plates with solar modules. At night, these plates are illuminated in various patterns and colours to illustrate the solar system.
Just like the Sea Organ, this solar-powered attraction was designed by Nikola Bašić. Stop by once the sun goes down to witness the dynamic display of light.

Roman Forum
Since ancient times, Zadar’s Roman Forum has been a popular public space for people to converge. Constructed between the first and third centuries, these former Roman ruins are now an open-air museum.
Although many surrounding buildings were destroyed during an earthquake in the sixth century, various elements still stand, including altars and benches. Stop by and wander through this historic spot opposite the Church of Saint Donatus.

Zadar Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Anastasia, better known as Zadar Cathedral, is the largest church in the Northern Dalmatia region of Croatia.
Its Romanesque appearance with round-spoked windows and arched details date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Inside the basilica is the marble-columned altar of the Saint Sacrament.
The cathedral’s bell tower was a later addition that took three centuries to construct, finishing up in the 1890s. For 15 kn, you can wander up to the top of the tower and look out over serene, uninterrupted views of the Adriatic Sea.

Kolovare Beach
Conveniently located near the city, Kolovare is one of the best beaches in Zadar, Croatia. The pebble sand haven is Blue Flag certified, meeting high standards of safety, cleanliness and accessibility.
The pine trees provide some welcome shade during the hot summer days, as do the ice cream parlours close by. You’ll find locals and tourists alike sharing a game of beach volleyball or water polo, so join in for an enjoyable Zadar beach experience.

The City Walls
The limestone walls around the city helped Zadar retain its independence during the 16th and 17th centuries while under threat by the Ottomans. Parts of the walls still remain, including some of the impressively-built gates.
Be on the lookout for the Land Gate, which is the official entrance into the Old Town . The Renaissance monument features a main arched entrance for vehicles with two side passages for pedestrians. Notice the winged Lion of Saint Mark statue at the top, as well as the other delicate motifs.

Five Wells Square
The historic landmarks known as the five wells allowed the city to have its own water supply during the 16th century. Today, Five Wells Square is a popular meeting point for locals of all ages.
Right next to the square is the Queen Jelena Madijevka Park, as well as many bars and restaurants. If you can, stop by at night when the wells are illuminated.

What to eat in Zadar
Curious about what kind of food is served up in Zadar? Here are some delicious local dishes you’ll want to try and where you can order them:
Restaurant Bruschetta is a mix of Mediterranean and Dalmatian culinary traditions. Try the squid or shrimp risotto, as well as a cold fish platter as an appetiser. As one of the fancier restaurants in Zadar, you can expect top-notch service and a beautifully-presented meal.
Proto also has an impressive range of vegetarian dishes and modern Croatian cuisine. Favourites include the spinach gnocchi, salmon pate, and black and white tuna. There’s even a speciality beef burger if you’re already missing the food back home.
Next door at Pet Bunara , you can enjoy a plate of pašticada, a popular stewed beef dish originating in Dalmatia. This restaurant specialises in giving classic Croatian and Dalmatian meals a unique twist, so spend your time looking at the menu thoroughly or ask your server for recommendations. You’ll find inventive dishes like ravioli with figs to black squid stew with chickpeas.

Tours to do in Zadar
As always, one of the best ways to experience any new city is by joining a walking tour. Zadar’s small group walking tour allows for a more personalised experience, giving you insider knowledge from a local rather than boring facts spouted at you.
The best part about this two-hour tour is the visit to the market, where you can taste local cheeses and Maraschino liqueur, the flavour of which originates from the Dalmatian coast. The places of worship and museums on the agenda require a smart casual dress code, so avoid any tank tops or short shorts.
If you don’t feel like walking, you can always bike instead. A two-and-a-half-hour cycling tour runs in both the morning and the afternoon, and is suitable for families. You’ll see as much as you possibly can in a short amount of time while learning about 3,000 years of Croatian history. Discover the city’s hidden secrets with your guide and be shown the most picturesque spots in Zadar.
A delicious half-day experience is a private food tour on Pag Island . The island is known for its culinary delicacies, from cheese, olive oil, honey and wine. You’ll get to taste all of these treats as you visit four farms and get to know all about their history and production.
Visiting Zadar with your partner? Don’t miss the romantic sunset sailing trip in the early evenings. The tour is complete with a bottle of wine and snacks like cheese, prosciutto and olives. With everything taken care of, you can sit back and relax for two hours as the sun goes down.

Day trips from Zadar
There are a handful of fantastic day trips you can take from Zadar that you’ll always remember. Among the top is a full-day tour of Plitvice Lakes National Park . Discover some of the tranquil terraced lakes, picturesque waterfalls, and marvellous limestone canyons.
On a four-hour-tour, your guide will introduce you to the local fauna and flora of the area as you stroll through the heavenly forest. Later on, take a boat tour along the turquoise-green Kozjak Lake.

The next best place to go to from Zadar is the Kornati archipelago . Depending on your interests, you can board a cruise towards Telašćica National Park and do some swim ming along the coast. Afterwards, you’ll have the chance to learn the basics of sailing from your skipper.
If you’re feeling extra adventurous, go on a sea kayaking tour to the Kornati Islands. Hopping off the passenger boat in Sali, you’ll bike to the southern tip of Dugi Otok before getting the rundown and having your gear fitted.
You’ll have some time for snorkelling and swimming as well, but lunch isn’t provided, so remember to bring a picnic with you.

If you’ve already seen Plitvice, why not head to Krka National Park next? You’ll instantly agree that Krka is one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world, and it’s only an hour south of Zadar!
From Skradin, you’ll take a 30-minute boat ride into the park grounds. Follow your guide through the winding, picture-perfect nature trails and marvel at the incredible Skradinski Buk Falls, the longest of the park’s seven main waterfalls.
Birdwatching is a popular activity here, and you’ll learn a lot about the local animals that call Krka home. As a bonus, you’ll get to visit the traditional mills in the park and see the weaving workshops.

14 Best Attractions & Things to Do in Zadar
Written by Meagan Drillinger Updated Jul 10, 2023
This medieval city is perched on a peninsula that sticks out into the Adriatic Sea. Its charming Old Town is webbed with car-free cobblestone streets just begging to be explored. Within the city's ancient walls are enchanting cafes peppered throughout hidden plazas, old medieval churches, and even Roman ruins, including the site of an ancient Roman forum.

Evidently, Zadar, the largest metropolis in northern Dalmatia, had a moment in time when it was still flying under the tourist radar. It's safe to say that moment is over — but for a very good reason. Zadar is absolutely magical.
Zadar was one of my favorite places to visit in Croatia for its juxtaposition of the old world and the new. In addition to its preservation of the past, Zadar is a celebration of modernity, from its large-scale art installations to its museums, beautiful nearby beaches , and a fantastic string of islands.
Explore more great places to visit in and around this vibrant city with our list of the top attractions and things to do in Zadar, Croatia.
1. Art Installations: The Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun
2. city walls and gates, 3. church of st. donatus, 4. zadar cathedral, 5. zadar archaeological museum, 6. relax on kolovare beach, 7. explore kornati national park, 8. the roman forum, 9. visit the church of st. chrysogonus, 10. church of st. simeon, 11. take a day trip to zadar archipelago, 12. the church of st. mary & benedictine monastery, 13. people's square, 14. the museum of ancient glass.

Believe it or not, the number one reason to visit Zadar these days is not to get lost in the past, but to focus on the present. For Zadar, these are the remarkable, and often peculiar, art installations that can be found throughout the city.
Zadar's famous Sea Organ is the number one attraction in the city. Installed on the seafront in 2005, it is a must-see. It's called the Sea Organ because as the waves crash against the cascading steps, they hit a series of underwater tubes. Each tube creates a different tone and together it makes a surreal soundtrack to the experience.

Another art piece to view in Zadar is the Greeting to the Sun, a circular installation of 300 multi-layered glass plates and solar cells that, come nightfall, light up.
Much more than works of public art, these two spots are incredibly popular for tourists and locals to come and hang out. When I visited, the steps were strewn with people stopping for a reflective moment in the late afternoon light, reading books, chatting with friends, or having a snack. It's a social scene as much as it is a statement piece.
Address: Obala kralja Petra Krešimira IV, 23000, Zadar, Croatia

You cannot get into Zadar's Old City without crossing the old city walls through one of its four magnificent City Gates. The oldest section of the wall was built by the Romans, and it is near the footbridge along the eastern wall.
But the most impressive gate to the city is the Land Gate, which was once the main entrance to the city. The gate sits next to the tiny Foša Harbor and dates back to the 16th century.
Tip: You'll find a parking lot here in front of the small marina, which gives perfect access to the Land Gate.

The other three gates include the Sea Gate, the Bridge Gate, and St. Rocco's Gate. Also worth visiting is Zadar's famous Sea Gate (Morska Vrata), known as the Gate of St. Chrysogonus (Vrata Sv Krsevana). Built in 1560 using an existing Roman arch for a base, the gate includes many interesting features, including a relief of the emblem of Venice, the Lion of St. Mark's; a memorial to sailors; and a commemorative plaque paying tribute to Pope Alexander III's visit to Zadar.

For me, the Church of St. Donatus was one of the most impressive sites in Zadar. It's beautifully preserved and one of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture found in this part of Croatia. The church dates back to the 9th century and is famous for its circular form.
What's great about the church is that it sits within the old Roman forum, so you can see the change of empires (from Roman to Byzantine) right before your eyes. Simply fascinating.

This part of the city has many of Zadar's other top attractions so you don't need to go very far to hit them all in one swoop.
Address: Trg Rimskog Foruma, 23000, Zadar, Croatia

Speaking of nearby attractions, the Zadar Cathedral is directly behind the Church of St. Donatus.
Zadar Cathedral (Katedrala sv. Stošije), which is also known as the Cathedral of St. Anastasia , blends a number of architectural periods into its fabric. Construction initially began with the Byzantines back in the 9th century, but it was rebuilt again during the 12th and 13th centuries in Romanesque style.
Of particular interest is the cathedral's fine façade with its three entrances and numerous blind arches, as well as two beautiful rose windows. The top one is in Gothic style, while the lower one is Romanesque. Interior highlights include the ninth-century remains of St. Anastasia, the stone altars, and the impressive wood-carved choir.

Be sure to check out the lovely bell tower dating from the 15th century, with the upper levels being completed in the late 19th century. If you want really awesome views across the city, arrange to climb the bell tower.
Address: Trg Svete Stošije, 23000, Zadar, Croatia

The second oldest museum in Croatia, the Zadar Archaeological Museum (Arheološki muzej Zadar) was founded in 1832 and is dedicated to the city's rich history. It is a good place to gather an overview of the influences that shaped this area of Dalmatia.
Highlights include the numerous ground floor displays devoted to finds from the 7th to 12th centuries, a notable glass collection, as well as many displays on the first floor related to Northern Dalmatia during the Roman period (particularly interesting is the model of Zadar showing the city's Roman layout).
The oldest periods of history are displayed on the second floor, which houses collections related to the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Copper, Bronze, and Iron Ages, including weapons, jewelry, pottery, and other artifacts.
Address: Trg opatice Cike 1, Zadar, Croatia

About a 10-minute, very scenic walk from the old town, Kolovare Beach is the main city beach, a mix of sand and pebbles backed by clear blue water. In summer, the beach can get crowded, but if the sun is too hot, you can retreat to a shaded green area just above the beach, which offers respite and is popular for picnics.

There are also showers, changing rooms, and toilets at the beach. Nearby, you'll also find shops and restaurants. If you want to swim with fewer people, keep heading east from Kolovare towards the headland.
Address: Kolovare UI 11, Croatia

Kornati National Park (Nacionalni Park Kornati), just off the coast of Zadar, is made up of 147 islands in the Zadar Archipelago and is easy to visit on a day trip. Established in 1980 to protect marine life and preserve natural habitats, these mostly uninhabited islands include Kornat Island , the largest, at 25 kilometers long and two-and-a-half kilometers wide.
Rugged and riddled with caves, cracks, and cliffs, these once lush islands used to be home to many Roman villas and farms, but a lack of freshwater and exploitation under Venetian rule left them desolate. Some of the islands still have Roman remains, including the ruins of Roman villas, and walls that run down the shoreline into the water, thought to have been a holding tank for fresh fish.
These days, the park is popular with yachters, scuba divers, and sightseers on tour boats or private charters, all drawn by the park's unique beauty.

Zadar's Roman Forum completely took me by surprise. I did not know what to expect when I showed up, but it was one of the highlights of the trip. That is because you can quite literally walk as the Romans once walked. Free of barriers, it's possible to roam the forum and take a few steps back in time.
Constructed between the first century BC and the third century AD, Zadar's old Roman Forum should be explored as part of a walking tour of the city (you can't miss it due to its location next to the city's fine old churches).
Measuring 90 meters long by 45 meters wide, the scale of this impressive ruin in the Zeleni trg Square still impresses (during Roman times, this area was a central market and public area). Highlights include the remains of the foundations of several public buildings, paving stones, and a Corinthian column.

Also of interest is the Pole of Shame, a more recent addition used from the Middle Ages to the 19th century to chain up criminals for all the town's people to see. Hot Tip: Try to plan your visit for nightfall when the ruins are lit up.
Address: 23000, Zadar, Croatia

Built by the Benedictines, the Romanesque Church of St. Chrysogonus (Crkva sv Krševana) was constructed on the site of an old Roman market in the late 12th century.
The interior of this splendid old three-aisled church includes a Baroque main altar dating from the early 1700s, as well as an apse containing a number of well-preserved 13th-century frescoes (check out the Romanesque crucifix). Of particular note is the beautiful exterior of the apse at the back of the church with its row of arches lining the top portion.

The 17th-century Church of St. Simeon (Crkva sv. Šimun) is worth a visit. Here, you'll find the remains of St. Simeon, one of Zadar's four patron saints, kept in a sarcophagus designed by Francesco da Milano in the late 14th century.

On the cedar coffin are gold-plated reliefs depicting the life of St. Simeon and a copy of Capella dell'Arena from Padua, Italy. Also, take note of the church's finely decorated altar containing the Virgin and Saints .

Zadar is the perfect spot from which to explore the Dalmatian coast, particularly the many beautiful islands of the Zadar Archipelago. One of the most interesting places to visit is Dugi Otok , the largest at 124 square kilometers and home to a scattering of villages, which subsist primarily on fishing and farming.
A vacation destination since Roman times, Dugi Otok includes the village of Sali , the main community and port, with its Renaissance summer homes and the Church of St. Mary, and the fishing village of Bozava with the 10th-century Church of St. Nicholas. But the real beauty of the island lies in its rugged landscapes and natural attractions, including the popular Sakarun Bay and Telascica Nature Park, a great place for relaxing on the beach or scuba diving.
Also worth a visit are the islands of Molat , Olib , Pasman , Ugljan , and Premuda with their tranquil settings and beautiful beaches.

Built in the 11th century, the Church of St. Mary (Benediktinski samostan sv. Marija) and its monastery have undergone a variety of renovations and alterations over the years. The current church boasts a Renaissance façade and a lovely bell tower, known as Koloman's Tower. This splendid Romanesque structure, a later addition, dates from the 12th century.
Next to the church stands the old Benedictine monastery. Still in use today, the monastery also now houses the Museum of Church Art with its fascinating collection of gold pieces, paintings, and sculptures.
Located within the Benedictine Monastery of the Church of St. Mary is another must-see Zadar attraction: the Gold and Silver of Zadar. Set in a number of rooms within the monastery and the 11th-century Church of Sv. Nediljica, this stunning display – also known as the Museum of Church Art – started off as a temporary exhibit instigated by famed Croatian sculptor Miroslav Krleža. It has since grown into one of the city's most important permanent displays of religious artifacts.
In addition to its many fine gold pieces, the museum's impressive collection includes numerous important religious relics. Among these are the remains of saints and important bishops, as well as historic clothing and fabrics.
Address: Madijevaca ul., 23000, Zadar, Croatia

The People's Square (Narodni Trg) has been the center of public life in Zadar since its construction in the 16th century. Important highlights include the old City Guardhouse (Gradska Straza), built in the mid-1500s and hard to miss on the west side of the square due to its large clock tower added in the 18th century (it's worth a visit for its small ethnographic museum).

Across from the tower stands the Renaissance City Loggia (Gradska Loza), built in 1565 and traditionally used as a place to make important public announcements and proclamations. These days, this splendid old building functions as a public gallery for art and other exhibitions. Also of interest in People's Square is the City Hall, built in the 1930s.

In the splendid 19th-century Cosmacendi Palace near Zadar's waterfront, the excellent Museum of Ancient Glass is home to one of Europe's largest collections of antique glass artifacts. Among its many highlights are numerous rare Roman jars, goblets, and vials found during decades of archaeological digs in the Dalmatia region of Croatia.
Also notable are a number of glass vessels used to hold perfumes and oils, glass cups once used in the region's earliest churches during celebrations of Mass, and tiny flasks designed to store holy water. Afterward, be sure to wander the palace grounds with stunning views over Jazine harbor.

Three gorgeous, less crowded and more affordable alternatives to Dubrovnik
This article may contain links to products and services we use and recommend. We may receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For more information, see our Disclosure Policy .
Thanks to Game of Throne’s popularity, easy cruise ship access and cheap flight connections to many European cities, Dubrovnik [ Google Maps location ] has become Croatia ’s most visited tourist destination.
The city’s fortified Old Town has become so popular that the city council introduced a crowd monitoring system. Out of interest, we had a look: A whopping 42,000 people entered through the city gates in the 24 hours before we published this article. At the same time, only 1,500 inhabitants are left within the city walls.
While we’ll write about our experience in Dubrovnik and how to best visit the city (in a sustainable way) in a separate article, today’s article is about three beautiful cities along the Dalmatian coast we recommend people visit to give Dubrovnik and its people a bit of a breather. Let’s spread the love.

Dubrovnik is not the only city along the Dalmatian coast boasting a well-preserved Old Town
Why are these three worthy alternatives?
Our three gorgeous, less crowded and more affordable alternatives to Dubrovnik must have most of the following:
- a well-preserved and sizable Old Town (ideally with intact city walls)
- UNESCO World Heritage site /s
- a coastal location with a Mediterranean climate
- local charm with family-owned shops and restaurants
- easy access by air/sea
- easy access to offshore islands
- affordable prices.
Since we are talking about Dalmatian coastal cities which all have frequent ferry connections to their respective offshore islands, we can tick off points three and six already. We’ll check out the other five points for each city individually.

Like Dubrovnik, our three alternatives are all located along the stunning Dalmatian coast
Our suggestions are not in the order of most to least favourite. We liked them all – otherwise, we wouldn’t include them here. The order is purely a geographical one: travelling north from Dubrovnik along the Dalmatian coast.

Split – The city chosen by a Roman Emperor
As a setting for Game of Thrones scenes (and with a small Game of Thrones Museum [ Get Your Guide Tickets , Google Maps location ]) Split [ Google Maps location ] shares some of Dubrovnik’s fame. But thankfully, it’s not quite as busy (yet) as its smaller sibling 200-odd kilometres further down the coast.

Thanks to Game of Thrones, Split shares some of Dubrovnik's fame, but it's not quite as busy (yet)
Contrary to Dubrovnik, which was founded around 614 AD, Split is over 2,200 years old .
About half of Split ’s Old Town is made up of the Diocletian’s Palace [ Google Maps location ], which was created for the Roman Emperor over 1,700 years ago to live here during his retirement. A UNESCO world heritage site , it’s not just one big building, well it sort of is but isn’t. The rectangular structure is about 215 by 180 meters in size. Yes, you read correctly. The palace stretches over several city blocks in either direction.

Diocletian's Palace (right) makes up half of Split 's Old Town | Image coutesy of Spencer Davis on Unsplash
These days, it’s more like a city within a city, rather than a single building. Smaller (but equally impressive) palaces created during Venetian rule are lining narrow alleyways, while 3,500-year-old black granite sphinxes guard some of the original parts of Diocletian’s Palace. It’s a fascinating mix of architectural styles.
Split may not have Dubrovnik’s city walls but the Old Town is magnificent, and the palace walls are pretty impressive too. So, definite ticks for our first and second testing points.

Exploring Split ’s Old Town is easily done on foot. If you like listening to the stories and anecdotes of a knowledgeable and enthusiastic local, join history professor Ana and her colleagues for a free walking tour .
If you prefer exploring Split at your own pace you can do that too:
- The Tourism Office at Peristyle Square , essentially the courtyard of Diocletian’s Palace, offers maps with a self-guided walking tour. There are also blue information plaques and frames dotted around the Old Town which explain the history of what you see.
- Another option is the self-guided tour by GPS My City .

Split 's Old Town is easily explored on foot - with guided tours by professionals or by yourself
When it comes to lunch or dinner time, don’t eat within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace. This is Tourist Central. Restaurants are packed, and prices are high. Venture a few side streets west from People’s Square: there are hardly any tourists and prices are sensible. For example, sharing a set lunch at Mia Fiaba , consisting of a soup, salad and mixed grill main course, cost us EUR10.
Accommodation costs in Split were the highest out of our three alternatives but still 20% cheaper than in Dubrovnik (for a similar distance from the Old Town). Ticks for testing points four and seven.

A few blocks west from here (People’s Square), there are hardly any tourists and restaurant prices are sensible
Even if you’re just transiting through Split on your way to or from the islands, make sure you stop here for a few hours. It’s worth it.
The luggage storage in the Split train station [ Google Maps location ] costs only HRK15 (about EUR2) for a medium-sized locker fitting two travel packs. The storage places along Obala Kneza Domagoja (the road between the bus/train station and the ferry terminal) were more expensive, and some of them were open to one side, making it easy for a passer-by to just grab a bag and disappear.
There are luggage lockers in Split 's main train station, only a few hundred meters away from the Old Town
Day trips from Split
Want to see more than just Split ? No worries. Great day trips from Split include the towns of Omiš [ Google Maps location ] – a treasure for adrenaline junkies, and Trogir [ Google Maps location ], another UNESCO world heritage site thanks to its beautiful Venetian architecture.
And have we mentioned the islands? Brač [ Google Maps location ], Hvar [ Google Maps location ], Vis [ Google Maps location ], Biševo’s Blue Cave [ Google Maps location ] and the Lastovo Archipelago Nature park / Park prirode Lastovsko otočje [ Google Maps location ] – the choice is yours.
The islands of Brač, Hvar and Vis are all within easy reach from Split | Photo by Dieter G on Pixabay
How to get to Split
As for our fifth testing point: Split has an international airport [IATA code: SPU, Official website , Google Maps location ], situated approximately 20 kilometres west of its Old Town, with regular flights to many European destinations.
There are frequent shuttle buses between Split Airport and Split Old Town. If you’re not in a rush, you can also take the cheaper integrated public transport service, consisting of bus number 38 between Split Airport and Kaštel Stari train station [ Google Maps location ], and the train between Kaštel Stari and Split ’s main train station.

Split 's airport is well-connected with the city centre - via shuttle bus or an efficient bus/train service
Šibenik – The charming city with two UNESCO sites
Situated 80 kilometres north of Split and slightly larger than Dubrovnik, is the underrated city of Šibenik [ Google Map location ].
We liked Šibenik – and not only because we had wonderful short-term rental hosts . While a popular summer destination, Šibenik still has a very local feel to it. Or as one of the locals put it: It’s like a big village. A definite tick for our fourth testing point.

White-domed St James Cathedral is only one of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Šibenik
Founded in the 9th century by Southern Slavs, Šibenik is about 200 years younger than Dubrovnik. Nevertheless, the city is home to two UNESCO world heritage sites :
- the 15th-century Cathedral of St. James / Katedrala sv. Jakov [ Official website , UNESCO listing , Google Maps location ], in the centre of the Old Town and
- the 16th century St Nicholas Fortress [ Official website , Google Maps location ] which guards the entrance of the waterway that leads from the sea to Šibenik.
St Nicholas is included in the UNESCO list as part of the Venetian fortification system in the Adriatic. St Nicholas is only one of four impressive fortresses in the city. The other three – St Michael’s Fortress [ Google Maps location ], Barone Fortress [ Google Maps location ] and St John Fortress [ Google Maps location ] – loom high above the city, each on its own hill.

St Nicholas Fortress is Šibenik's second UNESCO World Heritage Site | Photo by Sebastian Gößl on Pixabay

St Nicholas Fortress was only opened to the public in June 2019
Don’t get us wrong: it’s worth hiking up to the forts, even just for their magnificent (sunset) views over Šibenik and out to the islands of the Adriatic.
If you want to visit both St Michael and Barone, you can save money by buying a combined ticket (which is valid for seven days).
Want to walk (intact) city walls? You certainly can walk on top of the walls of the fortresses of St Nicholas, St Michael and Barone. Not quite like Dubrovnik’s city walls but pretty close. And with views to match (if not even more stunning).

Not quite Dubrovnik's city walls but pretty impressive nevertheless are the walls of Šibenik's fortresses
The fourth of the forts, St John (located about 400 meters north-east of St Michael and 300 meters north-west of Barone), is currently undergoing renovations and can thus not be accessed. You can however easily walk from Barone up to St John, and watch the sunset from there. It’s the highest one of the three hillside forts and has the best (sunset) views in our opinion.

With views of St Michael's and St Nicholas Fortresses, and out to sea, St John's Fortress is a great sunset spot
To see the interior of St Nicholas Fortress you will need to join a guided tour . The tour includes a boat trip from Šibenik’s Harbour through St Anthony Channel to the fort (and return) with about an hour to explore the fortress.

The interior of St Nicholas Fortress can only be explored on a 2 hour tour from Šibenik
Even if you don’t visit St Nicholas Fortress, St Anthony Channel is worth a visit.
Home to the remnants of cave-turned-church St Anthony’s Chruch [ Google Maps location ], Hitler’s Eyes (old navy tunnels used during World War Two to protect German warships from airstrikes) and old military barracks used during Yugoslav times, you can hire a bike or walk along the promenade that flanks the channel’s left side (as you look out to sea) all the way to the fortress.

Along St Anthony Channel, there are old navy tunnels that protected Nazi warships from airstrikes, fittingly called Hitler’s Eyes

It's easy to get lost in Šibenik's Old Town, but that's part of the fun | Photo by Kevin Langlais on Unsplash
A beautiful tranquil spot to have a rest from all the exploring is the medieval St. Lawrence Church and Monastery / Srednjovjekovni samostanski mediteranski vrt Sv. Lovre [ Google Maps location ] (which you pass on your way up to St Michael). Prices at the garden café are very reasonable if you want to stop here to have a drink or bite to eat.

When you explore Šibenik's Old Town, make sure you stop at the medieval monastery garden of St Lawrence - it's a beautiful, tranquil spot
Speaking of food: While in the Old Town, make sure you pop by the Slastičarnica KaGrom Ice Cream shop [ Google Maps location ] at Trg Kralja Držislava. They serve hands-down the best gelato in the world (sorry Italy ).

Šibenik has the world's best gelato, at Ka Grom Ice Cream Shop
Just outside the Old Town, wedged between Stankovačka and Starčevića Ulica, is Šibenik’s produce market [ Goolge Maps location ]. Locals go here early in the morning to stock up on fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood.
Šibenik Tourist Information Centre
The Šibenik Tourist Information Centre [ Google Maps location ], Telephone Phone: +385 (22) 214 411 or +385 (22) 214 448, [email protected] is a great place to check out as they can also offer suggestions on what to see and do.
If you rather have someone else cook for you, head to Šimun [ Google Maps location ]. This unassuming little restaurant (open Monday to Saturday) serving traditional Balkan cuisine at very reasonable prices, was recommended to us by our host, and it didn’t disappoint.
Speaking of affordability: Our accommodation in Sibenik , a few blocks away from the Old Town, was 30 per cent of what we paid in Lapad, 3km away from Dubrovnik’s Old Town. This is a definite tick for our seventh testing point.
Our studio 10 minutes' walk from Šibenik’s Old Town cost us 2/3 of what we paid for our stay 3km away from Dubrovnik's Old Town
Day trips from Šibenik
If Šibenik is not enough to keep you occupied for days, head to Primošten [ Google Maps location ]. A 40 minutes drive south of Šibenik, Primošten’s Old Town is situated on an island, complete with cobble-stoned streets that just invite you to wander. Plus, if it’s a hot day, Primošten is known for its gorgeous beaches. So, don’t forget your swimsuits.

Beautiful Primošten makes for a great day trip from Šibenik | Photo by Hrvoje Klaric on Unsplash
Šibenik is also the gateway to Krka National Park (approximately 20 kilometres north of Šibenik’s Old Town) and the laid-back, (largely) traffic-free and less touristy islands of Krapanj, Kaprije, Prvić, Žirje and Zlarin, a few kilometres offshore.

From Šibenik, it's an easy 20km drive/bus ride to Krka National Park
How to get to Šibenik
As for our fifth testing point: Šibenik conveniently sits between two international airports. Split Airport ( is the closest, approximately 50 kilometres to the southeast. Zadar Airport ( Official website , IATA code: ZAD, Google Maps location ) is approximately 80 kilometres to the northwest of Šibenik.
Don’t worry: you don’t need to hire a car to travel between the airport/s and Šibenik:
- There are frequent bus connections between Zadar Airport and Šibenik
- From Split Airport, you can take the number 37 bus to Trogir and another bus from there to Šibenik (and vice versa).
- In July and August, there are also shuttle buses between both Zadar and Split Airports and Šibenik.
Zadar – The once largest fortified city in Dalmatia
Our third alternative to Dubrovnik, the ancient city of Zadar [ Google Maps location ], is situated 75 kilometres north of Šibenik.
Similar to Split , Zadar ’s Old Town is located on a peninsula. Similar to Dubrovnik, it managed to retain (some of) its city walls. Though dating back to the 4th century BC, Zadar is about 1,000 years older than Dubrovnik.
Similar to Šibenik, Zadar avoided Ottoman rule thanks to significant fortifications, which made Zadar the largest fortified city in Dalmatia in the middle of the 16th century. Together with Šibenik’s St Nicholas Fortress, the fortified city of Kotor and other fortifications on the Western side of the Adriatic, Zadar ’s defensive system is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

The Venetian Land Gate is part of Zadar 's UNESCO World Heritage Site
Unfortunately, a large part of this magnificent city was destroyed by Allied bombings during World War Two. What is left (and has been restored) however, is worth a visit.
Take the Roman Forum for example: Laying partially buried under the Byzantine Church of St Donatus / Crkva sv. Donata [ Google Maps location ] and St Anastasia’s Cathedral / Prvostolnica sv. Stošija (Anastazija) [ Google Maps location ], you can vividly imagine life here back in Roman times. There are even altars which were used for blood sacrifices during Roman times and a Roman column which was used to publicly humiliate wrong-doers in the Middle Ages.

Zadar 's Roman Forum lays partially buried under the Byzantine Church of St Donatus and St Anastasia’s Cathedral
Zadar ’s Old Town is very compact and easily explored on foot. If you’re looking for a self-guided walking tour: fellow Kiwi travel bloggers Terry and Maura of Travel Kiwis have put together an easy-to-follow 3.3km loop that covers all the important sites.

Explore Zadar ’s Old Town on a (self-)guided walking tour
Like Šibenik, Zadar has a small but excellent Market Zadar / Tržnica Zadar [ Google Maps location ] just inside the city walls (the fish market hall is part of the city walls).
If you prefer to dine out, even the restaurants in the Old Town and/or with sunset views won’t burn a hole into your wallet.
Our accommodation in Zadar , a mere 10 minutes walk from the Old Town, was 30 per cent of what we paid in Lapad, 3km away from Dubrovnik’s Old Town. That’s also a tick for our seventh testing point.

Zadar 's Sea Organ, where you get to enjoy your sunset with the melodies of the Adriatic
Day trips from Zadar
For a different experience, you can jump on a ferry to the beaches of Preko [ Google Maps location ], or join day tours to the Kornati National Park / Nacionalni Park Kornati [ Google Maps location ] and Telascica National Parks [ Google Maps location ] or Dugi Otok [ Google Maps location ].

The Kornati Islands and Telascica National Park make fore a great day trip from Zadar
How to get to Zadar
Zadar has an international airport ( Official website , IATA code: ZAD, Google Maps location ), situated approximately 10 kilometres east of Zadar ’s Old Town.
There are regular flights from/to many European countries and frequent bus services between the airport and the city centre. That ticks on all fronts for Zadar too.
Are you planning to visit Split, Sibenik or Zadar and have any questions we didn’t answer?
Have you been to either and can add any tips? Please send an email and let us know.

About Ad Settings
- Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
- A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
- A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
- If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
- An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
- An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
- A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
- You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
- You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
- You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
- You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
- You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
- You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
- You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
- You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
- The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
- An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
- A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
- An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
- A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
- A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
- An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
- Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Getting Around
Attractions
Zadar is both, an atmospheric time machine and an open-air museum. Here on display, you will find some of the most beautiful monuments of architecture and cultural heritage of the eastern Adriatic coast. Its city walls are the ancient guardians of this still vibrant historic museum in the open, end they were rightly added to UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Barkajoli, the Rowing Boatmen of Zadar
From early morning to late evening, the Barkajoli take passengers and tourists with a little rowing boat across the Zadar peninsula to mainland and back, thus cultivating, according to some daring explorers, a 3,000-year-old tradition.

Church and Monastery of St Michael
The Church and Monastery of St Michael is in a possession of a collection of artefacts, the most valuable of which are the painting of Our Lady of Snow, dating back to the beginning of the 17 th century, Saint Lucy by an unknown painter, the Last Supper, and the Flagellation of Christ, all three from the 16 th century.

Foša is a municipal little harbour in Zadar and one of the symbols of the city. Because of its centuries-old atmosphere and position next to the Renaissance ramparts, it is one of the favourite places to go for a stroll, to take photographs and to enjoy the lavish harbour colouring.

Greeting to the Sun
The new symbol of Zadar is located in the Zadar port on the western point of Zadar Peninsula. The Greeting to the Sun is overlooking the Zadar Channel, the islands and the world-famous sunset. With this installation, Zadar has got a new tourist attraction.

Historic District of Varoš
If Kalelarga has been the most important Zadar street and bloodstream of the city since antiquity, the historic district of Varoš is a symbol of a new Zadar. Its narrow streets are imbued with a life atmosphere that radiates comfort and moves slowly through the morning. Scenes of everyday ritual meetings and socializing, endless chit-chat ( ćakula ) and feasts take place in Varoš. Varoš is an exhibition space of a living city.

Church of St Donat
The Church of St Donat in Zadar has long been desacralized, meaning no liturgies are held here, and from the end of the 19 th century until 1954 it housed the Zadar Archaeological Museum. As St Donat has exceptional acoustic characteristics, it has been the venue for Renaissance music festivals for decades.

Church and Monastery of St Francis
The Church and the Monastery of St Francis in Zadar, from 1283, is the oldest Dalmatian church built in Gothic style. In 1358 the Zadar Peace Treaty was signed between the Republic of Venice and the Hungarian-Croatian king Louis I in its Sacristy.

Small Arsenal
The Small Arsenal in Zadar is a protected monument of culture and a part of the Medieval Castle (Kaštel), a separate structure that has been integrated in the defensive system of the city walls. Only some parts have been preserved, among which is the lower part of the entrance tower that was later transformed into a gunpowder warehouse.

The fragments and traces from the past reveal Zadar’s antiquity, whereas its dynamic squares demonstrate the urban identity of the city and its authentic connections to the Mediterranean and European culture. Zadar is a city of squares, where everything happens and everything gets disclosed.

A 3D Sculptural Representation of the Historical City Centre of Zadar
Every now and then, strolling along the famous Zadar city walls, which the people of Zadar call Muraj, uncovers some new surprises. New ways of interpreting our city are emerging in a quiet manner. Why is that? Because Zadar has a lot to say.

Church of St Elias the Prophet
The Church of St Elias the Prophet in Zadar is located on the Roman Capitoline. It was constructed in the 16 th century on the spot of the Medieval catholic church of the same name. It was adapted in the 18 th century in Late-Baroque style, and it preserves a rich collection of icons dating back from the 16 th to the 18 th century.

Stomorica Church
The floor plan of the Stomorica Church in Zadar resembles a key, and according to tradition, it symbolizes St Peter's keys. Today only the base of that hexafoil Pre-Romanesque church, which was once dedicated to St Ursula, is preserved.
