6 key tools and tips to find the cheapest airfare

Bill Fink

Inflation is slowing down, but travelers may still feel the sting of high flight prices. Finding cheap airfare to your desired destination at your preferred time can be challenging. For people with flexible schedules looking for great deals and inspiration, the array of available planning tools can be confusing and intimidating.

Fortunately, TPG is here to help by sharing some of our best tools, tips and tricks for finding the cheapest and best airfares. We've covered the topic of cheap airfare extensively and included many tried-and-true methods our staff uses to book travel that can also work for you.

TPG also regularly posts deal alerts on some of the best airfares to help you find affordable flights.

Here are our favorite tools, tips and tricks for securing cheap airfare deals. Be sure to click on the related links for more details.

Google Flights

Google Flights is perhaps the most intuitive, straightforward and useful flight search tool on the internet. Its many features and functionalities help you identify the best flight prices and options for specific flight times and flexible itineraries.

You can also search based on what TPG recommends as the best times of day to book flights.

When you're exploring Google Flights, examine the map search feature. It can show you the least expensive fares to various destinations, which can be a great source of inspiration. You can also click on the date grid to see flight pricing for entire months at a time and the price graph to see overall trends for pricing on your target itinerary.

Another useful feature is Google's price tracker. The tracker appears on the search results page, allowing you to track overall prices on the route you're searching. When you sign into your Google account, you can receive notifications for price changes, new offers and expiration dates for an itinerary you are tracking. You'll receive notifications of price changes directly to your inbox, preventing the need to manually search multiple times a day in the hopes of a price drop.

Note that while this tool includes nearly all airlines, it won't show ticket prices on some carriers.

cheapest round trip flights right now

Google Flights also recently added a Price Guarantee program; this means you might be eligible to get a refund of the price difference if it drops. If a "guarantee badge" is next to the itinerary and the fare falls by more than $5, your flight is eligible for the program. You can receive up to $500 total per Google account across all eligible itineraries in a calendar year, and you can have up to three open Price Guarantee bookings at any time.

Google Explore

If you are flexible in your destination but still looking for the best flight deal, Google's "Explore" functionality is a great tool. Within Google Explore , you can be specific or flexible with your travel dates. All you need to do is enter your departing city — you can leave the return open-ended — and the map will show you various flight options and their respective prices.

Or, if you have a specific region in mind, you can also include a general location, such as "Europe" or "Caribbean."

Points Path

What if you prefer to use your airline points instead of actually paying for your flights?

While many sites are available to help you find award availability , there's one tool that helps you within your Google Flights search. The Points Path tool is a top-notch web browser extension within Google Flights. It lists out the award pricing right next to the cash fare.

The tool will tell you which transferable points can be used with the airline you're considering and will also recommend whether you should use miles to book the flight (ensuring you are getting good value) or pay cash instead.

Related: How to use the Points Path extension to compare cash and award rates in Google Flights

The tool is free, and once you find the itinerary that works best, you can book your flight as you typically would — either with Google Flights or through the airline's loyalty program for an award reservation.

Points Path makes finding award availability extremely easy within a tool you are most likely already using. All you have to do is download the Points Path extension (currently available with Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge). The installation takes less than a minute and you can view great deals — for both paid and award fares — within Google Flights.

Additional flight-comparison sites

Google Flights is a great site to use. However, there are a few other sites that work in a similar fashion with slightly different features. Just note that even though Southwest fares are now included with Google Flights , Southwest fares are not pulled on many of the sites below.

One of the original fare-comparison sites, Kayak is a one-stop shop for finding the best price. The site pulls fares directly from the airlines and lets you compare them against third-party booking websites, such as Expedia and Orbitz.

cheapest round trip flights right now

Kayak also offers many enhanced filter options. You can search by a specific airline, an airline alliance, aircraft, layover airport and more.

If your dates are flexible, there's also a calendar grid allowing you to see pricing up to three days before and after your desired dates. You just need to make sure to include that in your search.

Kayak also goes one step further than some other sites and displays the pricing of a round-trip flight with two separate airlines — one for the departure and one for the return — if pricing is, in fact, cheaper.

cheapest round trip flights right now

Momondo is great for those who love a visual. If your travel dates are flexible, it's very easy to find the least expensive dates at a quick glance. The site offers many filters and allows you to set up price alerts if the fare goes down. Momondo will also advise whether now is a good time to purchase or if you should hold out based on recent fare trends.

Unfortunately, though, if booking a round trip, the site will not display the cheapest airline for the departure and return; it will only list fares from the same airline. This means you'll want to search as two one-ways, which can be time-consuming.

cheapest round trip flights right now

If you are looking for a cheap flight to any destination, Skyscanner is the site for you. Just enter your departure city and select "Explore everywhere" in the "To" field. It'll deliver a list of destinations in order of price.

The site is incredibly easy to use and can open your eyes to new parts of the world if you are destination agnostic.

Skyscanner also allows searches based on certain routes and even multicity flight options. But similar to Momondo, the site will only display fares from the same outbound and return airline.

The Flight Deal alerts

If you want to receive real-time deal alerts without searching for them yourself, following The Flight Deal on X is a great option. This team constantly finds deals from many destinations, and you might be lucky enough to find one from your home airport.

cheapest round trip flights right now

To get the most out of it, you should set up your X account to receive push notifications from The Flight Deal. This means anytime the team makes a post, you'll receive a notification on your phone. That way, you don't have to keep checking X.

Subscription sites

cheapest round trip flights right now

Many independent travel websites promise to find you the cheapest deals available. However, not all of these websites are worthwhile. Some are even flat-out scams that will direct you to travel agencies selling expensive tickets with hidden fees or extensive surcharges.

When looking for deals, TPG scans a few websites that generally provide reliable airfare notifications and highlighted offerings.

Many of these websites offer premium paid subscription services that could be worthwhile, depending on your appetite for travel and passion for deals.

Registering for regular email deal alerts from these websites and subscribing to their X feeds can provide regular travel inspiration and alerts for breaking deals to your favorite destinations.

Some of TPG's favorite airline deal websites:

  • Airfare Watchdog
  • Dollar Flight Club

Note that many of these deal websites include links to "hacker fare"-type itineraries involving multiple airlines, circuitous routings, and extended layover and travel times.

Discounted fares on these flights may not include mileage awards features or be eligible for status points. So read the fine print and itineraries closely on these deals.

Assuming the details work for you, scanning or subscribing to airfare deal websites can be a great way to find super-discounted flight prices that may not appear on Google Flights or other standard booking platforms.

Book directly with airline websites

cheapest round trip flights right now

When trying to hack the system and find the best "secret" airfare deal, people often neglect to search the place where many of these deals originate: the airline itself.

Virtually every airline features a deals section on its website. Many of these so-called deals can be underwhelming. However, sometimes airlines offer incredible, short-term deals that will likely be fully booked before they even reach some deal-consolidating websites.

For example, Southwest has recently been offering many sales where tickets must be booked with a specific coupon code directly on the Southwest website.

You can find out the latest by regularly checking the deal pages on the websites of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines . Many airlines also offer package deals combining hotels and rental cars; however, you should price these out individually, as the real value of these offers can vary.

Subscribing to airlines' newsletters about deal alerts can be another way to discover the latest offers, but you'll risk inundating your email inbox with destinations that might not interest you. Still, these push alerts may inspire you to take a last-minute vacation you didn't think was affordable.

It's worth watching out for airline miles and status promotions, too; you can use these to maximize your rewards. Usually, you'll need to book these deals directly on the airline's website.

Southwest Airlines is a special case for finding airfare deals because its fares are not generally available on many third-party websites. For example, you can book Southwest flights on the Kayak for Business website but not on consumer searches. It may be worthwhile to double-check any fare deal you find with a similar itinerary mapped on the Southwest website.

Particularly when booking directly on an airline website, branded airline cards can be a good call for earning status and rewards specific to those airlines. Options include the United℠ Explorer Card and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (see rates and fees ).

Optimize credit card usage

cheapest round trip flights right now

Booking tools can help you find the most economical flight option for your next trip, but using the right credit card to pay for the flight is also important. There are a variety of top travel rewards cards that could fit this bill, but a few stand out:

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express: This card offers 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (up to $500,000 in purchases per calendar year), a terrific return of 10% based on TPG's most recent valuations .
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : This card offers 3 points per dollar on all travel purchases , and while the resulting return (6%) is slightly lower than with the Amex Platinum, it does provide some of the most comprehensive travel coverage out there.
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees ): This card is one of the simplest to use, offering 2 miles for every dollar you spend on all purchases. This isn't spectacular, but it can still be a great option for buying airfare, thanks to the way it allows you to redeem miles at a fixed value . It allows you to use miles to cover the cost of any travel purchase, though you also have the option to transfer your Capital One miles to airline partners.

Bottom line

Finding the lowest airfare can be more of an art than a science, but a number of strategies and tools can help you with this search.

Everyone's travel goals and circumstances differ. However, using one or more of the above strategies will put you on the right path to snagging that much-wanted trip without such a high price tag.

Mass IT outage hits airports, businesses and broadcasters around the world

Major airlines, medical facilities, businesses and police forces around the world were hit by a massive information technology glitch Friday, with Microsoft computers around the world showing " Blue Screens of Death ."

The cybersecurity company CrowdStrike said Friday that the outages were the result of a routine software update gone wrong, "not a security incident or cyberattack."

CrowdStrike, which provides cybersecurity services and software for many large corporations that use Microsoft systems, later issued a new software update that automatically fixed some computers. But others must be manually restarted and patched, causing huge delays.

Microsoft announced late Friday morning that its 365 apps and services had recovered, and CrowdStrike said a fix had been deployed early in the morning. But some frozen computers couldn’t receive CrowdStrike’s automatic update, leading to some of the problems lingering into the weekend.

Many flights were delayed as of Friday afternoon . Starbucks locations in New York had resumed normal wait times , despite its mobile order-ahead feature still not working.

The glitch brought chaos to a number of key institutions and businesses around the world that may take some time to clear up.

Many flights were grounded across the globe, and stores and broadcasters in several countries went offline. According to the aviation technology company FlightAware, the tech glitch was responsible for more than half of the U.S.'s 1,352 flight delays and cancellations before 8 a.m. ET on Friday.

Major carriers, including American Airlines , Delta Air Lines and United Airlines , all issued ground stops Friday morning citing communications issues. Passengers traveling to the United States from as far away as Japan had their flights canceled. Delta ordered a “global ground stop,”  said Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., a member of the House subcommittee on cybersecurity.

Follow live updates on the global tech outage

George Kurtz, president and CEO of CrowdStrike, said the problems could persist.

“It could be some time for some systems that just automatically won’t recover,” he told NBC’s “TODAY” show on Friday.

Kurtz said the company was “deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this,” adding the issue had been fixed on its end.

“Many of the customers are rebooting the system, and it’s coming up, and it’ll be operational because we fixed it on our end,” he said. “We’re just trying to sort out where the negative interaction was,” he said of the faulty update that affected Windows PCs.

Earlier, in a post on X , Kurtz said that the outages were due to a “defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts.”

In Europe, Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport said there would be delays to passenger check-ins “because of a technical fault,” and Aena, which manages 46 airports in Spain, said “an incident in the computer system” could cause delays. Several budget airlines in South Korea reported technical problems and delays, The Associated Press said. Sydney Airport, one of Australia’s largest, said there would be delays.

Paris' airport authority said in a statement that while its systems were not affected ahead of next week's Olympic Games opening ceremony, "this situation has an impact on the operations of airlines at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly airports: delays in check-in, delays and temporary suspension of some flights," according to the AP.

Global technology outage

The Paris Olympics organizing committee told Reuters that while the outage was slowing its operations, its ticket sales remained unaffected. Elsewhere in the world of sports, British soccer team Manchester United delayed a ticket release scheduled for Friday, blaming problems with Microsoft.

That was just one of many businesses affected across the United Kingdom, with train operators blaming IT outages for cancellations Friday morning and the London Stock Exchange saying that a “3rd party global technical issue” had prevented its regulatory news service from posting any new items.

The country’s National Health Service posted on X that “the NHS is aware of a global IT outage and an issue with a [general practitioner] appointment and patient record system.” The NHS that the system’s emergency phone service was still operating.

In Israel, at least 15 major hospitals were affected, according to media there. However, most medical centers had either returned to normal operations or reverted to manual operations. The emergency line of the country’s ambulance service was also affected.

At 2:20 a.m. ET, Alaska State Troopers said that 911 and nonemergency phone numbers across the state were not working “due to a nationwide technology-related outage."

The glitch affected news outlets, too, including NBC News. Sky News, NBC News' British partner broadcaster, was temporarily unable to air live news. Broadcasters in Australia also reported problems.

In a blog posted late Friday afternoon , Kurtz wrote that CrowdStrike staffers would be on call over the weekend to help affected customers, and warned of hackers and scammers exploiting the situation.

“We know that adversaries and bad actors will try to exploit events like this," he said. "I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and ensure that you’re engaging with official CrowdStrike representatives."

Delaware is home to the second cheapest US city to visit, according to a new report

A vacation doesn’t always have to break the bank, and that often means opting for a domestic trip instead of somewhere international.

According to a study that rounded up the cheapest cities in the United States to visit, Delaware is home to one, and it might surprise you.

City in Delaware makes list of cheapest US cities to visit

Dunhill Travel Deals , a travel service offering deals and discounts, calculated the total cost of a four-night stay for a family of four across select U.S. cities and ranked them from cheapest to most expensive.

Determining the cost of a four-night stay included factors like the price of four average-priced round-trip flights, three average-priced meals per day for four people, two average-priced hotel rooms for four nights and the cost of the average-priced rental car for four days.

Based on these calculations, Wilmington ranked No. 2 in terms of the cheapest U.S. cities to visit.

Dunhill Travel Deals found that a trip to Wilmington would cost $2,948 total for a family of four or $1,131 for an individual, broken down into:

  • Round-trip flights costing $175 per person
  • Lodging costing at $524 per person
  • Meals costing at $256 per person
  • Rental cars costing $176 each

In comparison, the study reports that “all cities” cost $4,437 for a family of four or $1,551 for an individual, with flights costing $500 per person, lodging costing $577 per person, meals costing $270 per person and a rental car costing $204.

The city ranking No. 1 is Toledo, Ohio, with a total cost of $2,852 per family or $1,068 per individual. For this trip:

  • Round-trip flights cost $216 per person
  • Lodging costs $428 per person
  • Meals cost $236 per person
  • Rental cars cost $188 each

The most affordable US cities to visit

The study found that locations in the Midwest and South tend to offer more affordable travel options, and some are served only by small or regional airports that limit commercial flight options and result in lower airfares compared with locations with larger airports. Most cities in these locations cost less than $4,000 for a family of four.

Major cities like New York, San Francisco and Boston cost more than $5,000 per family of four. Opting for neighboring cities like Philadelphia, Oakland and Providence can get you a similar experience for a cheaper price.

While commercial air service was slowly recovering on Friday after a technology outage caused thousands of flights worldwide to be canceled or delayed, the ripple effect from the disruption left airports crowded with passengers and airlines working to get planes and crews back in position.

“These flights, they run so tightly, so back to back, that even after a root cause is addressed, you can still be feeling those impacts throughout the day,” said Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, in an appearance on CNBC.

The outage was caused by a flawed update from the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, whose software is widely used around the world. At United Airlines, for example, the outage affected technology used to calculate aircraft weight, check in customers and operate call-center phone systems.

Throughout Friday, messages that travelers posted on social media showed flights grounded worldwide, some terminal monitors down and crowds of stranded passengers waiting at airport gates and customer service desks. At airports in India and South Korea, some passengers stood in long lines to obtain handwritten boarding passes .

Are flights still grounded?

Since the initial outage, service is slowly resuming, but the number of global delays and cancellations has continued to increase throughout the day.

Worldwide, around 110,000 commercial flights were scheduled on Friday, and around 5,117 of those flights, or 4.6 percent, have been canceled, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. In the United States, the number of cancellations stood at more than 2,300 — or about 9 percent of daily flights — as of Friday afternoon.

Fewer than half of the flights today in the United States left on time, the others departing with delays of a half-hour or longer, according to Cirium.

Delays at some airports in the United States were well beyond an hour, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration. The average delays at Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, the world’s busiest airport, were nearly three hours.

Which airlines are most affected?

In the United States, at least five carriers — Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines and United — temporarily grounded flights, according to the F.A.A .

As of about 4 p.m. Eastern, more than 830 Delta flights had been canceled, and more than 1,220 had been delayed. American was reporting more than 360 flights canceled and more than 1,040 delayed. More than 380 United flights had been canceled and more than 1,260 were delayed, according to FlightAware.

The Dutch airline KLM canceled around 41 percent of flights on Friday, according to FlightAware. It has begun to recover, but advises passengers to check their flight status online before traveling. “We urge passengers not to come to the airport if their flight is not departing or is severely delayed,” the airline said in a statement.

Why weren’t some airlines, like Southwest, affected?

Southwest, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue Airways barely scrapped any flights on Friday. A spokesperson for Southwest said, “The outage did not directly affect our operations,” but did not elaborate on why.

Alaska does not use CrowdStrike, and its operations were “mostly unimpacted,” said Tricia Bruckbauer, a spokeswoman for the airline.

Which airports have been hit the worst?

In the United States, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta appeared to have the most flights affected by the outage, with a total of more than 590 incoming and outgoing flights canceled and more than 780 flights delayed as of midafternoon on Friday, according to FlightAware .

Many other airports, including hubs in New York, Chicago and Charlotte, N.C., also appeared to experience significant disruption. J.F.K. advised passengers not to show up to the airport without confirming flight status.

The outage also affected major airports in Europe. Several airlines at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam were unable to gain access to their check-in systems. The systems have since restarted, and the airport said it was working with airlines to “get all passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible.”

London’s busiest airports, Heathrow and Gatwick, said they were using contingency systems to get around the outage, but both were still reporting delays for almost half of their incoming and outgoing scheduled flights.

Hong Kong International Airport had to switch to manual check-in, but the airport reported that flight operations were not affected .

I’m flying today. What can I do?

Pack patience.

Delta , United , American , and Spirit have issued flight waivers allowing passengers to rebook without any additional fees. The terms and applicable airports vary. Generally, passengers are required to depart within a week.

Travelers can usually check itineraries through the airline’s website or app, but some travelers on Friday reported difficulties rebooking through the Delta and United apps.

You can also contact airline customer service by phone, though travelers posting on social media said that they had not been able to reach agents. But there are a few tricks you can try aside from the primary hotline: U.S. airlines have overseas customer service phone lines, easily found on the internet, and those agents can help too.

FlightAware can offer detailed data about delays and cancellations, and which airports are most affected, in real time.

What are my rights if my flight is delayed or canceled?

You may be entitled to certain compensation — such as airline-provided hotel or meal vouchers — detailed on the Transportation Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard .

The Transportation Department said the software outage is considered within airlines’ control and that airlines must follow through on their commitments to travelers, which for most United States-based carriers include complimentary ground transportation and accommodation for those affected by overnight delays and cancellations, as well as meal vouchers for waits exceeding three hours. Travelers should not expect to have this compensation offered to them, but are within their rights to ask the airlines for it.

“We have reminded the airlines of their responsibilities to take care of passengers if they experience major delays,” Mr. Buttigieg said in his CNBC appearance on Friday.

Passengers’ rights can differ for international flights . For example, in the European Union, cancellations or long delays may give you the right to a refund, a replacement flight and financial compensation. Passengers on flights delayed overnight may receive reimbursement for food, accommodations and ground transportation. (Travelers should hold on to any receipts for costs incurred.)

I have a cruise to catch. Will I get a refund if I miss the ship?

Cruise lines typically do not provide refunds, rebooking or any other concessions if flight disruptions cause travelers to miss their cruise departure, and the large companies are not making exceptions now.

But things look brighter for Carnival and Royal Caribbean passengers who booked their airfare through the cruise lines. Should they miss their departure, those travelers can expect benefits including coverage for flights, hotels and ground transportation to get them to the next port of call.

“Regrettably, air service disruptions — whether technological or weather — are beyond our company’s control,” said Chris Chiames, the chief communication officer for Carnival. “We always encourage our guests to purchase travel insurance, and today’s news is an important reminder of why.”

I have travel insurance. Am I covered?

Travel insurance companies are expecting an influx of claims, mostly for delays and missed connections, as a result of the outage.

One agency, InsureMyTrip , anticipated more than 1,600 of its customers could be affected by the outage, said Suzanne Morrow, the company’s chief executive. Policyholders may be entitled to coverage for their expenses related to delays, as well as coverage for any missed connecting flights, she said.

Any travelers hoping to file a travel insurance claim related to the outage should make sure to keep all their receipts or bills to show proof of purchase, as well as check their insurance plan or policy and file a claim right away.

Nadhim Zahawi, the former Conservative chancellor, is assembling a £600m bid for The Daily Telegraph that could up-end the auction of some of Britain’s most influential media assets.

Sky News has learnt that Mr Zahawi, who left parliament in May after opting not to stand again in his Stratford-on-Avon seat, has approached a number of billionaire backers about helping to finance an offer for the daily newspaper, its Sunday sister title and The Spectator magazine.

City sources said the Reuben family, which owns a vast swathe of property assets and a stake in Newcastle United Football Club, was among those to have been sounded out by Mr Zahawi in recent weeks.

The former cabinet minister, who also spent time as business secretary, education secretary and as the government's vaccines minister during the Covid-19 pandemic, is said to believe the Telegraph has significant scope to boost its profitability by expanding in the US.

Online grocery retailer Ocado has struck a deal with a company that will oversee its warehouses controlled mainly by robots .

Ocado told shareholders today that US firm Kroger will roll out its "Re:imagined" tech across "multiple" fulfilment centres, as well as "future" ones.

"The technologies include proprietary Ocado innovations such as On-Grid Robotic Pick and Automated Frameload, which will bring new levels of efficiency and labour productivity to the Kroger Delivery network," Ocado said.

"These innovations will enable Kroger to further drive down their cost to serve from CFCs, and enhance an already market-leading customer proposition."

Lucozade has added to its "Alert" energy drink range with two new flavours .

Coming in 250ml cans, Lucozade Alert Ultimate Energy (guarana-flavoured) and Lucozade Alert Mango Peachade are set to roll out from next month.

RRP is £1 a can.

Carpetright's future is understood to have been secured but the majority of its 1,800 staff are set to lose their jobs under a limited rescue deal.

It is believed that rival floorings retailer Tapi will confirm it is buying just 54 of 272 stores and two warehouses in a so-called pre-pack administration that allows a buyer to cherry-pick assets.

The deal would see, however, only 300 staff retained.

The brand and Carpetright's intellectual property rights are also believed to be included in the sale.

Families paying for holiday clubs this summer now face a bill of £1,045 for six weeks' care for one child, a study has found.

A survey of councils across the UK by charity Coram Family and Childcare found that represented a rise of 6% on last year's costs.

Providers say they are trying to keep costs down as they struggle with staff shortages.

This table shows how prices have increased in the past 12 months in England, Scotland and Wales...

"Too many families dread the onset of the summer holidays," Coram Family and Childcare managing director Ellen Broomé said.

"Finding a place will be a challenge this summer, particularly for children with special educational needs and disabilities."

Lending for buy-to-let (BTL) house purchases has more than halved over the past year, a banking and finance industry body has said.

New mortgage deals granted for this purpose fell from 25,280 in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 12,422 in the first quarter of this year.

The market also shrank - from 2.04 million outstanding BTL mortgages in the first quarter of 2023 to 1.98 million in the first quarter of this year.

This has been put down to rapidly rising interest rates, which made it harder for those looking to buy a BTL property to pass bank affordability tests, UK Finance said.

Stamp duty surcharges on second and subsequent properties also played a part.

James Tatch, head of analytics at UK Finance, said: "Without more unexpected negative shocks, strong rental demand and strong lending standards could mean the buy-to-let sector emerges from last year's downturn sooner than previously expected, also that further rises in arrears are limited.

"Lenders continue to offer a range of support to anyone who's worried about their finances, with teams of trained experts ready to help. If you are struggling, please reach out to your lender as soon as possible to discuss the support options available."

Are you struggling because of high interest rates? Sky News is keen to hear from people who are due to refix their mortgages, are on variable rates or are trying to get on the housing ladder.

We've all heard of unusual jobs, but this may take the biscuit...

A 72-year-old grandmother has been appointed theme park Alton Towers' first "chief thrillseeker".

Jackie Smith, from Wiltshire, was the first female to join the Parachute Regiment in 1971 (at aged 19) and has led an adrenaline-fuelled life since.

Her new role, which will last 12 months, will see her responsible for testing rides.

"It's my absolute honour to be appointed Alton Towers' first chief thrillseeker," she said.

"I can't wait to bring my expertise from a lifetime of adventure to help ensure they continue to set new standards."

She has already been on rides in the park, and offered her thoughts.

"My first time on the iconic Nemesis Reborn definitely met my high standards for thrills - it felt like my first jump all over again."

Ms Smith has completed some 5,000 parachute jumps in her career and has previously been nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Drinkers can choose from citrus, melon, passionfruit and apricot flavours.

Gin & Juice launched in the US in February.

Barcelona is set to "substantially" raise the tourist tax for cruise passengers visiting the city for less than 12 hours.

It comes as anti-tourism protests have taken place across parts of Spain in recent weeks.

Jaume Collboni, the mayor of Barcelona, has confirmed the charge will be increasing but hasn't said by how much.

The tourist tax for stopover cruise passengers is currently €7 (£6).

Mr Collboni said in an interview with El Pais newspaper: "We are going to propose... substantially increasing the tax for stopover cruise passengers.

"In the case of stopover cruise passengers (less than 12 hours) there is intensive use of public space without any benefit for the city and a feeling of occupation and saturation. We want to have tourism that is respectful of the destination."

Mr Collboni said tourists, not local taxpayers, should pay for local projects like air-conditioning in schools.

The proposal will have to be agreed with the Catalan regional government, he added.

The widely expected (but nevertheless bombshell) news that Joe Biden had pulled out of the US presidential race failed to produce a crater on financial markets.

US stock market futures gained slightly but the dollar and US bond yields were static as the trading week opened in Asia.

Market analysts said the election development was largely inconsequential as a win for Donald Trump remained priced in.

A big sympathy vote was anticipated after the failed assassination attempt earlier in the month.

In London, the FTSE 100 gained back most of the losses seen on Friday when dealing began.

It was 0.5% higher at 8,196.

Utilities and real estate stocks were leading the charge.

The big story, however, was in Ireland, where Ryanair shares fell by more than 12% at the open.

Investors were reacting to a slump in first quarter profits and the revelation of big discounting to drive ticket sales.

You can read more about the budget airline's fortunes in our previous post...

Ryanair fares will likely be lower than those we saw last summer, the airline has said.

The average fare is 15% cheaper this summer, with Europe's largest carrier (by passenger numbers) engaging in significant discounting in an attempt to keep customers interested.

Reporting weaker profits, which the company blamed on heightened consumer caution, group chief executive Michael O'Leary warned shareholders that fares over the key summer holiday months would be significantly down as a result of the weaker than anticipated consumer backdrop.

He also indicated that prices would continue to drop.

Mr O'Leary told shareholders: "While Q2 demand is strong, pricing remains softer than we expected, and we now expect Q2 fares to be materially lower than last summer [previously expected to be flat to modestly up]".

Ryanair reported the weaker profits than expected for its first financial quarter, blaming a need to "stimulate" flight sales.

My neighbour has installed a log burner and the chimney is as close to our property as it is legally allowed. Every time I go out of my front door I can smell acrid smoke. What can I do about it? Crissy

The first thing to do is speak to your neighbour and try to resolve it amicably, according to Chun Wong, a partner at law firm Hodge Jones & Allen.

"Remember you do need to live by them in close proximity on a daily basis, so aim to maintain a good relationship," she says.

"Although neighbours may install items within their own boundaries so it may technically not trespass into your property, there may still be recourse for consequential losses due to noise or smells escaping into your property.

"Smells and noise can be classed as a statutory or private nuisance, which may depend on expert evidence or the effect/harm on you such as the frequency of the smell or noise."

Statutory nuisance is something that affects a person's health or causes disturbance to them in their property. It has to occur frequently and continue for a period of time that makes it unreasonable.

Private nuisance is a branch of the law which provides more robust remedies through the civil courts where there has been a significant detriment to the use or enjoyment of a person's land.

It's down to the individual to decide which route they want to go down - bearing in mind statutory nuisance may not give compensation but will likely be cheaper and easier to action.

If the smoke is seen as a statutory nuisance, Wong says, then you should complain to your local council, which could end up serving an abatement notice.

"This is a notice which only the local authority can serve requiring someone to take action or refrain from action. If that fails, breach of an abatement notice can lead to a substantial fine and in serious cases, prosecution," she says.

"If it is a private nuisance you may be able to bring court proceedings to stop the nuisance and claim for compensation.

"The first step would be to send a letter of claim to your neighbour and also submit a claim form in your local county court with all the details and supporting evidence.

"You do not need a solicitor to do this, but I strongly advise you to seek legal advice before taking this drastic step given the serious consequences involved."
