Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.

Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Solid reliable frame of highest grade materials (available at the time). Nice geometry. Carbon parts dampen vibration and reduce weight. Mathews buzzkill bar-end dampeners Ultegra and other quality components. Good trainning bike. All road bike flat or hills. Light for its class and year(about 18lbs) Overall great value!

Very Race capable but not a pro race bike. Not really "full Ultegra" (in my case) Bontranger "Race Luxe" saddle is only comfortable in short rides up to 30 miles. Needs some custom adjustments for perfect fit and performace if racing.

A very good all around frame that gives the best of both worlds with Treks best materials: OCLV carbon and ZR9000 aluminum!. It is a very responsive frame and has nice geometry for an aggressive rider. The carbon components do reduce shock and vibration but only to an extent(it does not do miracles on rough farm roads). The "buzzkill" bar-end plugs by Mathews and Bontanger also dampen vibration. The candy apple red paint is beautiful and hypnotizing! The clipless pedals provided are better than clips but don't provide the support for a long ride and more aggressive riding.The saddle is comfortable up to 30 miles but a killer in longer rides(40+). These two will be upgraded soon for racing. Though my bike had some creaky sounds and trouble shifting smoothly and accurately at first (was bought used) some tuning and adjusting did the trick and now it is solid and smooth. I recommend it for aggressive riders how play hard, train hard or simply want a balance of performance and price. PS:I was not surprised to see many people race the same frame as me in my first race.

Accelerates and climbs extremely well even with the 11-23 cassette and 53-39 chainring. I was thinking about converting it to a triple and am glad I didn't. Fantastic road shock absorbtion and excellent ride comfort. Great handling in turns too. Overall, just a real pleasure to ride.

Frame often creaks when I pedal. Maybe coming from my saddle, seatpost, etc. I'm not sure yet. Any ideas?

This bike is so much fun I haven't been on my mountain bike since I got it tweaked out. I was looking for a road bike to keep myself in shape for mountain biking and was favorably impressed by the reviews posted here. Funny, I haven't ridden my Trek 8000 MTB since I started riding this?! When I saw the ad I called the seller: "3-4000 miles of training, scratches and bad tires. Otherwise o.k." Well...the front wheel required extensive truing and could use a new rim. The chain was stretched and derailleur hanger was bent as well. Then there was that hidden dent in the top tube. Still, for the time and money I spent getting it right it was still well worth it. I don't worry about scuffs and dings now. I could never afford this bike new so this worked out just fine. I don't race, I just play hard.

Last road bike I bought was a 1996 Santana Elan tandem and before that I had a used 1970's era Raliegh Supercourse Mark II. This just blows the doors off of those bikes but the comparison isn't fair.

Smooth ride. Fast. I broke an 11 year old personal record I set when I was 30. Made it up all but one hill in the hilly hundred without walking. I think it could climb hills by itself. Nice paint job, the 2003's don't look as good

I replaced my 1980 Schwinn Le tour with this bike. I looked at the Klein Quantum and the Lemond Alp... and found the Trek better. The Klein felt heavier and did not fit me as well as the Trek. The Lemond had a very harsh ride in spite of being a steel frame bike. I wanted to ride a Jamis Quest but the nearest dealer was 150 miles away and only had one of the sizes I wanted to try. The bike shop was very understanding as I came back to look at and compare the bikes over a couple of weeks. The Trek fit me the best and felt quicker. I find it hard to believe that there are better bikes than this. It is so far ahead of my old schwinn. I was worried about so many other people riding Treks but I have only seen two other 02 2200's. Some magazines don't review the 2200 very well, but for me and the type of riding I do this is the perfect for a much as I could spend on a bike. It is also a good match for my Rocket 88 mtn bike.

Schwinn Le Tour.

Best value in this price range. Dependable components; good enough and light enough, but not the best and the lightest. Comfortable. Finish and QC were comparable with bikes twice this price. TREK and LBS did a good job making ride ready. No tune-ups, warranty adjustments, needed the first 500 miles. I would buy another TREK and I'd buy again from this shop.

Hard to be critical in this price range. This bike can keep up in any group ride that the rider can. I did not care for the stock seat, squeaky and hot after just a few minutes.

TREK 2200 Double, 58 cm. Solid, light ride, that is comfortable on long rides but can still climb a hill. Ride is very favorable as compared to steel, not harsh at all. Frame is probably worthy of upgrades, but only as parts wear out. While it is good enough to race on, there are probably better choices for that. For club events, fitness, fast training rides, weekend tours, I could not be happier. With aerobars it will do for a twice a year triathlon as well.

None, except a 1975 Raleigh Grand Prix which was riden for many years as well. Last ride was a TREK 7500 FX.

stock wheels flex with lateral swing on the bike climbing or sprinting.

Great first road bike. Light, accelerates pretty well, comfortable. I put aero bars on for tri's and it was still a comfortable setup. Upgraded the pedals (Look JaJa's - I've got Bobke in my head everytime I ride), seat (SI - Flite Max) and seatpost (Thomson). Other than the wheel flex (I'm 6'3", 187lbs), I like it. Put an XT cassette on the back and did Mt Washington with no issues whatsoever, very happy with its climbing capabilities. For the price/component level, this is a great bike until I can afford a Seven Axiom.

I have enjoyed this bike so far. It has handled all of my needs very well. I love how it fits me. The frame has not been harsh at all for me and the components have been performing well. I did get a Selle Italia Flite gel saddle and Look pedals to compliment the bike.

i have been a recreational rider for years. in october, i had 2 bikes stolen from me so i used the opporunity to get into road bikes. i was able to afford 2 new bikes with insurance money and this bike did not let me down with its abilities. i wanted to start out a better than average level so as not to have to go through the labor of constantly upgrading. the parts on this bike are amazing for the price. the bike itself is so very responsive to every pedal stroke and very controlled in tight turns. the roads in SC leave much to be desired but this from handles very very well. i couldn''t have asked for more in a bike.

After bone-jarring rides on my C''dale CAAD3 frame, I wanted something quieter but could not spring for carbon. So far, the 2200 fits the bill. It is suprisingly comfortable (even with the stock Selle San Marco saddle) yet quick. The Bontrager Race Select wheels make a noticeable difference over 36-spoke types. This is a well-designed, nicely priced machine with good components. Anyone looking to move from the ''beginner'' to ''intermeidate'' level of riding would do well to take a serious look at the 2200.

saddle sucks a lil but i just bought a Selle Italia SLR to make things all better.

I am a racer and wanted a better racing bike than that of my Trek 1000. I''''m on a pretty good budget and i think the Trek 2200 is the best bike for the money. I meen at the same price last year at had 105 and now they moved it up to Almost all Ultegra whichi is great. Im just starting to upgrade a few parts like Carbon Seatpost SLR saddle and a few other things. This is a great bike.

2002 Trek 2200 56cm: I bought the Trek in a trade-in on a 53cm Lemond Zurich, which was too small. A "serious" recreational rider since 1978, the Trek is my first alum bike. Steel frames do absorb road vibration better. However, a well-made alum frame such as the Trek, especially if it''''s equipped with a carbon fork (the 2200 is), shatters the myth that alum frames can''''t be comfortable over rough road surfaces. I find the 2200 very comfortable, fast and stiff. Best of all, this 56cm fits me much better than the 53 Zurich ever could. High to mid-level componetry (all Ultegra save for 105 brakes, front derailleur and free wheel), the aforementioned frame and durable,light wheel set (Bontrager Select)) make this bike a great value. What it lacks is snob appeal. Eliteists dismiss Trek as so much McBike, not an unfair assessment if that''''s where you''''re coming from. Well,we all can''''t cough up $4,000 for a Colnago.

Bianchi Giro: Another fine alum bike. I tested one but found the Trek better at absorbing road vibration, probably because of the 2200''''s over-sized OCLV carbon fork.

2002 Trek 2200

Hello, I am newbie in here, I was wondering if a 2002 trek 2200 in really good shape is worth 485.00, It looks like it was ridden just a couple hundred miles, then placed in storage. I was wanting to buy a good bike for my friend who is about an intermediate level rider, but not spend more then 500.00. He currently rides a 80's model Schwinn World Sport, which is steel and weighs more then a mountain bike. Also, I am sorry if this is a newbie question, or if it has been asked before. I need to learn all the features on this forums. Thank you  

A lot depends on where you live (the more populated it is with cyclists the more valuable lightly ridden bikes are) but under $500 seems fine.

Seems kind of steep to me. Especially since for 200$ more you could get a brand new entry level bike and have the warranty on new parts with it.  

msrp was $1,679.99... price is fair if in good working order.  

Price seems OK.... But I would rather get a newer bike for the same price. That is a long time for a bike to be sitting and collecting dust and aging.  

Unless they're left out in the rain, bikes don't really "age" when they're sitting collecting dust. Tires might need replacing, some things might need lubing, but a bike is not harmed by sitting in storage. Just sayin'. I ride regularly on some bikes with 40-year old frames. Parts haven't really changed all that much in the last 10 years, in truth. With a mix of Ultegra and 105 parts, and a carbon fork, that bike is a notch or two above entry-level. Seems like a fair price if it's in good shape. It's more bike than $700 would get you new today.  

I have one from around 2007 and I paid less than $1200 brand new from a dealer, that's with mostly Ultegra components. It's really not a bad bike but $485 for an 11 year old entry level bike seems steep to me. Honestly it comes down to if you love it and can afford it, no reason you couldn't get a lot of life out of it but it's not going to be the latest or greatest, or the lightest.

Review: Trek’s New 2025 Checkmate Gravel Race Bike is Incredibly Fast

Up until now Trek ’s gravel lineup has been, well, a little lonely, comprised of just the Checkpoint. That bike is a generalist, something that an experienced rider can put big miles on and that a novice can still find approachable and easy to ride. But a one-size-fits-all approach inevitably means some people get left out.

While gravel was once mainly an adventure minded pursuit, the discipline has matured rapidly, and speed is now atop the minds of many, especially as gravel continues to overtake road racing in availability and popularity. Gravel is now where the fast riders are getting their fix, and they want a bike to match. Trek has finally followed many other brands in releasing a second gravel model, one that is all about speed and racing. It’s called the Checkmate, and it lives up to the race-focused billing.

Checkmate Details

It was only a matter of time before Trek released a new gravel bike, especially because it has a gravel team, Trek-Driftless, that needs to be able to compete in the increasingly competitive gravel circuit. Trek now falls in line with the numerous other brands pursuing the go-fast gravel crowd — BMC, Canyon, Cervelo, and 3T to name a few. As you’d expect, that means there’s a whole lot of optimization for speed in this new bike.

The major nod to speed comes from the tube shapes, which are adapted from the newest generation Trek Madone released earlier this summer . The thing that might throw you off, however, is that the tube shapes don’t at all look aero — not in the way we’ve been trained to expect at least. The head tube area is narrowed like other aero bikes, but the square downtube is decidedly not aero-looking. Luckily the wind doesn’t care what you or I think about aerodynamic shapes, and Trek’s testing shows faster times with these tube shapes. As we’ll get to later, Trek has definitely done something right here in the speed department.

Trek’s response to the fact that the Checkmate has less than standard looking aero tube shapes is that the frame is designed as part of a system alongside the Bontrager Aeolus 37V wheels and optimized around a 38 to 40 mm wide tire. The square downtube promotes the smooth transition of air from the front of the bike to the rear, channeling air around the entire bike in the most seamless way rather than considering each tube shape in isolation.

As those familiar with Trek might have been able to guess, the Checkmate gets an updated version of Trek’s IsoSpeed rear decoupler shock absorption system, which works to isolate the seatpost from the rest of the frame. The result is a bike that feels much smoother when riding seated than without it. It’s worked well on other Trek models for over a decade at this point, and it continues to work well for gravel in the Checkmate.

Also pulled over from the new 8th generation Trek Madone is the one-piece carbon handlebar-stem. Like that squared-off downtube, the handlebar has a blunt shape, and it has a 3 cm flare from the hoods to the drops. There’s also a very slight outsweep. All in, it’s a very aggressive bar for gravel, one that suits the go-fast sensibilities of the new bike.

As a package, Trek claims the new bike is 5 minutes and 54 seconds faster than the outgoing Checkpoint SLR when ridden at 200 watts over Unbound 200. That translates to about 38 seconds per hour faster if you’re not trying to mix it up with the pros.

But beyond aerodynamics, the other big story of this bike is weight, or lack thereof. Trek says the new Checkmate SLR 9 weighs 1 pound less than an equivalent Checkpoint SLR 9, thanks in part to the use of Trek’s top-level 800-Series OCLV Carbon. My size medium test bike weighed in at 7.53kg (16.60lbs) without pedals or bottle cages, making it easily one of the lightest gravel bikes I’ve ever tested.

Checkmate geometry

Trek offers the Checkmate in six sizes, XS to XL, a change from the purely numeric sizing of the previous Checkpoint.

Long and low might dominate the gravel space, but Trek is actually turning things back on the Checkpoint’s geometry. Compared to the previous Checkpoint SLR, the new Checkmate is slightly shorter in the reach department, but with similar stack heights size over size. In short, if you’re coming from the previous-generation Checkpoint, you’ll likely need to use a slightly longer stem than before to match your reach measurements.

Handling geometry has been optimized for straight-line speed as well. The big news here is that the bike is shorter front to back, all in the name of making it more nimble feeling. So how is it optimized for straight-line speed? Mostly with a low, low, low 80 mm bottom bracket drop across all sizes.

On that note, Trek has opted to use just one fork rake offset across all sizes. The result is trail figures that range from a slack-feeling 70 mm on small sizes and a relatively quick 62 mm on the largest sizes.

Checkmate builds, specs, and pricing

The Trek Checkmate isn’t designed to be a generalist gravel bike, and its build range reflects that. There’s just one top-end SLR-grade carbon frame and two builds in total, one with SRAM Force and the other with SRAM Red, all with Trek’s new carbon bar/stem cockpit. Trek also offers a frameset option.

The Checkmate SLR 7 AXS with Force costs $8,299.99 USD / £8,500.00 / €8,999.00 / $10,999.99 AUD, while the SLR 9 AXS with Red costs $11,999.99 USD / £10,000.00 / €10,999.00 / $17,999.99 AUD. The Frameset is $3,999.99 USD.

While there are just the two builds and four colorways, Trek also offers its ProjectOne customization program, allowing for component adjustments as well as custom paint. I was able to arrive at the exact fit I wanted by choosing 170mm crank arms as well as the cockpit option that worked for me, 39mm wide at the hoods, widening out to 42mm in the drops, with an 80mm stem. If you’re going to spend this much on a bike, you may as well have it built up with the exact spec you want rather than just taking whatever version happens to be in stock.

There are also custom paint options for the Checkmate including the new ICON Raw Lithos paint program available specifically on the Checkmate.

Gravel bikes have come a long way in a short time, and the Checkmate may demonstrate that better than any bike. It’s ridiculously light and fast, and, honestly, I’m tempted to leave the review at that. But, there’s more to say.

I was able to recreate my road bike position on this bike, and when I got on, it just felt right to my roadie sensibilities. Pretty soon I was eating up miles at a fast clip. For fast, non-technical gravel routes, the Checkmate is the perfect tool.

As I hit the more technical gravel portions of my usual test route, the Checkmate’s optimization for fast, straight roads was most evident, resulting in some overrunning turns and fishtailing rather than smooth cornering. I was still having fun though, mind you. It feels wonderful on road descents, plus its aero prowess comes to the forefront on descents as it picks up speed rapidly.

Trek does a wonderful job with the small details on this bike, one of my favorite being the fastening system for the seatpost. While the bolt to tighten a seatpost can often be finicky, or made in a way that the bolt and clamp system can fall into the frame itself, this one stays securely in place, and is accessed through a little door held securely shut by a magnet. The seatpost also makes saddle adjustments quite easy, which is far from the norm with seatposts unfortunately.

One small gripe I found with this bike is similar to one I have with the Domane in that my thighs are prone to rubbing against the top tube because the top tube–seat tube junction where the IsoSpeed decoupler is located is a little chunky. That said, it’s not a huge annoyance, and I’m glad to have IsoSpeed on this bike.

I like the number of mounting positions for bottle cages and bags inside the main triangle. Some will lament the lack of internal downtube storage, a feature increasingly found on gravel bikes, but it’s really not something I’ve missed that much, and the omission of downtube storage makes sense because this bike’s mission is pretty squarely on going fast and trimming out any features that add unneeded weight and complexity. Trek has created an elegant frame bag option for the bike as well to access mid-ride necessities like food.

As I said before, it’s an incredibly light bike, helping it feel more like a performance road bike. The integrated aero cockpit borrowed from the Madone aero road bike adds to the performance road feel. I’m not completely sold on the super-narrow handlebar concept being pushed for fast gravel bikes nowadays, meant to put riders in the most aero position possible. However, through Trek’s ProjectOne bike customization program I was able to opt for the 39mm bar width rather than 37mm. I like the fit of these bars quite a bit. They’re comfortable enough in the tops, though I didn’t find myself spending much time there since I was so preoccupied with riding fast. And I love the shape of the drops with a slight flare, just enough for extra control on descents, but not more than you need for a bike that is meant for faster, less technical terrain.

I could easily see this bike being my one-bike option. If you’re not big on adventure riding and instead prioritize fast rides, this bike allows you to add more speed to the off-road portions of your rides, while still feeling plenty fast on-road. A second wheelset could easily transform it into a reasonably capable road bike.

Trek’s entry to the fast-gravel segment is a win in my book. It doesn’t quite put the aero gravel competition in checkmate, but they’ve definitely been put on notice.
