New Forest Tour Bus | 3 Open Top Routes [2024]

Touring the New Forest by open top bus is a lovely thing to do, even for locals like us who live on the edge of the National Park. This guide to the New Forest tour bus will tell you all you need to know about taking the three routes around the area .

An open top bus tour of the New Forest allows you to see the sights more closely while enjoying the sunshine. This is one of the warmest and driest parts of the UK, so you might even be pleasantly surprised by the weather. (Though we always pack a mac. Just in case.)

Highlights of the New Forest National Park are all included on the trio of routes offered by local operator morebus (who also run the Purbeck Breezer routes that head west from Bournemouth).

The New Forest lies to the east of Bournemouth and Dorset, and is located in Hampshire. To find out how to explore this National Park by local bus, read on to find out the New Forest bus timetable for each of the three routes. Plus everything else you need to know before you travel!

Let’s hop on board.

Why travel on the New Forest Tour bus?

The open top bus around the New Forest can take you to towns and villages like Ashurst, Barton-on-Sea, Burley, Milford-on-Sea, Brockenhurst, Fordingbridge, Beaulieu and Ringwood.

Routes depart from Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Totton, and you can board the bus at any of the stops en-route. Tourist attractions like the New Forest Wildlife Park and accommodation such as Sandy Balls, Hoburne and Shorefields Holiday Parks can also be accessed via these buses. The Green route also calls at the Balmer Lawn hotel.

The buses even call at popular places to east and drink along the way, including the tearoom at Holmsley, the Needles Eye cafe, the Rising Sun pub and the Hobler Inn. You can even get to New Milton train station via the Blue Route, which offers direct services to London Waterloo. The Red Route also takes in Ashurst station.

Why take to the wheel when someone else can do the driving and navigating? If you’re visiting the area between late June and mid September, then why not take an enjoyable, scenic New Forest sightseeing bus to get around the area?

New Forest tour tickets

The price you’ll pay to travel on the New Forest Tour bus depends on your age, how large your party is and how often you want to travel. Concessionary fares are also available for those who qualify.

The minimum ticket validity is one day, and the maximum a season ticket that applies throughout the operating dates. Season and 7 day fares only apply to New Forest residents. Visitors can buy tickets valid for 1, 2 or 5 days.

1 day tickets

A ticket valid for one day costs between £7.50 for a resident child and £18 for a non-concessionary, non-resident adult. A group ticket for up to 5 is also available, and will work out cheaper if there are enough of you travelling together.

2, 5, 7 day and season tickets

2, 5 and 7 days tickets can save you money – if you travel on the bus enough to recoup the cost. Don’t forget that 7 day and season passes are exclusively available to New Forest residents.

At £24, a 2-day standard adult ticket is just £6 more than a one day ticket. So it may well be worthwhile. The longer the ticket duration the bigger the discount, but it’s only worth it when you’ll actually use it!

To give you an idea, a 5 day standard adult ticket costs £36 for non-residents. While resident fares are cheaper, verification is required. You’ll thus need to demonstrate you really do live in the New Forest by showing some proof of your address.

Check all the current New Forest Tour fares here

morebus ways to pay

You can pay for morebus tickets in various ways. You can usea contactless credit or debit card, cash, or Android or Apple Pay on the bus. It’s also possible to purchase in advance via the website. To do this, you can create an account, then receive a digital ticket to show on your smartphone.

Will you take a trip on the New Forest Tour bus?

Lyndhurst is often referred to as the ‘capital’ of the New Forest. The Court of Verderers has been held here since medieval times – making it the longest-running court in the country – controlling the number of ponies which can graze in the Forest.

Right beside the Tour stop is the New Forest Visitor Centre (free entry) – with museum, gallery, information centre, and shop – a good place to plan your New Forest adventure.

The New Forest Tour – helping you and helping our environment

The New Forest Tour is a key part of our aim to encourage more people to leave their cars at home. Over 40,000 people explored the New Forest National Park on the New Forest Tour bus instead of by car last summer.

The three scenic routes saved an estimated 220,212 private car miles last year, even on a reduced operating schedule. The Tour also provides a boost to local businesses. Last year, it contributed an estimated £660,000 to the New Forest economy while stopping at local villages and attractions.

The Tour stops at local cycle hire centres within the Forest. With each Tour able to carry up to four bikes, it gives access to the area’s quiet country lanes and 100 miles of waymarked cycle tracks .

The Tour is operated by morebus in partnership with the New Forest National Park Authority and is sponsored by local businesses.

New Forest sightseeing bus An open topped tour you can hop on, hop off too!

New Forest Siteseeing Tour Bus

New Forest Sightseeing Tour Bus 01 July 2023 until 17 September 2023 No more tours for 2023

The New Forest sightseeing bus in this stunning UK National Park is called the New Forest Tour . It makes exploring and discovering this UK National Park so easy. It helps keep the forest "green" as less cars travel over this beautiful environment too.

My biggest tip?

The New Forest sightseeing bus tour really does cover an awful lot of this wonderful area. It's a bit like if you visit Disneyland - there's so much to see and enjoy but if you don't plan it you can miss bits which you may regret later.

Study the 3 routes below, see where they stop and decide if you want to get off and explore and visit certain areas. Then decide if you will have enough time to pack it all in. You can buy multiple days which is good and during your ride on the New Forest sightseeing bus you wont have to drive, find a parking space or even pay to park either!

How great is that - and you're being very "green" so well done you.

Why do I recommend the New Forest sightseeing bus?

New Forest Tour bus at Sandy Balls

I'd really recommend a day out on the New Forest Tour sightseeing bus. It's open topped and is hop on, hop off and you can take your bike! Sit upstairs if you can.

I haven't done the tour for a few years now but see the buses trundling along throughout the summer with happy visitors taking in the views. Make sure you check with the latest routes etc from the New Forest Tour website

Read my archive info on the   New Forest Tour Bus Review and also my New Forest Tour Red Route Review. Look at the photos and see what it's like to explore the New Forest from the open top deck! We're all trying to make the New Forest greener so please help by taking the New Forest Tour! New Forest Tour Bus 2023 dates . This year there are 3 New Forest Tour Routes starting on Saturday 01 July to Sunday 17 September. Additional stopping places to enjoy farm animals, wildlife and the Hythe ferry have been added as the New Forest National Park is trying to become as "green" as possible and discourage as many cars as is feasible from cruising around the forest. Green Route   2 hour duration approx

Looking at the prices I think you can really have some good days out by planning your routes and buying a 2 day pass or more. It can get you right round the New Forest seeing all the sights at a good price. By the time you take petrol and car parking into account you may save money! Don't forget it stops at most of the major campsites and you can take your bike too.

Here's what the New Forest sightseeing bus can offer you on your days out

New Forest Lymington Marina

This really is a New Forest sightseeing bus! Open topped views of villages, woodland, beautiful coast, heaths, and all the animals are fantastic. I found you can be really nosy on that top deck and peek into gardens - don't tell anyone.

Circular tour with stops in Brockenhurst, Lymington, Beaulieu Village and the chance to stop off and visit the National Motor Museum, Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway and Lyndhurst.

Hop on, hop off - there are stops throughout the circular route to get back on the bus again - we stopped off at Lymington for an hour.

Pick ups outside Hollands Wood and Denny Wood campsites - very handy for a fun day out from camp.

The audio guide gives you a really interestin g insight into this stunning UK National Park.

The Brand New Forest Card gives you discounts on attractions, gifts, local food and produce and cream teas too!

Discounts and offers to various places you stop at on the way and a half price offer on your next trip on the New Forest Tour Bus.

The New Forest Tour Bus Guide gives a chance to explore on a couple of walks - the map is included in the guide - and a 6 mile cycle route which you may want to explore on your day out.

Glorious views throughout the journey across the fantastic New Forest landscape mean you really get to explore a nd understand this wonderful landscape and wildlife haven fully. Find out where and read my New Forest review

The New Forest sightseeing bus tour - why did we love our day out?

My little New Forest foal age 17hrs old

We really enjoyed our day out on this fantastic New Forest sightseeing bus. It was good value for money because

  • We travelled over a wide area which you could explore at your leisure
  • We were totally "green" and environmentally friendly
  • No traffic jams in our car
  • No car park fees
  • Freedom to hop on, hop off and walk or cycle
  • Discounted entries etc
  • A real insight into the New Forest UK National Park
  • You see far more from the open topped seats than a car - the views across lots of the open New Forest were spectacular

New Forest Hollands Wood Campsite-you can join the bus from here

I hope your stay in the New Forest UK National Park is a truly memorable one and that you see lots of the wonderful wildlife sights on offer and learn and enjoy all about this beautiful landscape.

It can't get much better than an open topped, hop on and hop off sightseeing bus can it?

Enjoy your New Forest sightseeing bus Tour experience and come back soon!

Sea Road and Hurst Road stops

New Forest Tour Bus

Care-free and car-free! Leave the car behind and enjoy grandstand views of the New Forest National Park from the top deck of the open-top New Forest Tour bus from 1st July – 17th September.

Sit back and enjoy a spectacular, panoramic perspective whilst listening to an audio commentary telling the story of the history and heritage of the landscape, its people and culture, and some fascinating facts about its flora and fauna.Your ticket gives access to discount at Beaulieu National Motor Museum, the New Forest Wildlife Park, and local businesses participating in the Go New Forest card scheme.

There are three routes – Blue, Green, Red – which cover different parts of beautiful countryside and coast.Interchange points: Blue/Green at Brockenhurst and Lymington, Blue/Red at Burley, Green/Red at Lyndhurst. The Blue route takes in the coast and stops at Hurst Road and Sea Road in Milford on Sea. One ticket allows you to travel everywhere.

If you plan your day, you can experience all three routes in one day, hopping on and off along the way. Or, if you prefer, you can remain on the same route without changing. You choose! The routes are circular which means if you decide to get off the Tour to explore on foot, you simply return to the same bus stop to pick up the next bus. A Tour driver will pick up at any bus stop if you make your presence known.

Tickets can be purchased when you board on the day from the driver, or in advance online at thenewforesttour.info, or from campsites and holiday parks, e.g. Shorefield and Hoburne Bashley which are both close to Milford on Sea. Multi-day tickets are great value and you can enjoy each route in full on separate days, at a more leisurely pace. NEW FOR 2022 – multi-day tickets are valid for the entire season (previously limited to 5 or 14-day timeframe) to give maximum flexibility.

If travelling from Southampton, the ferry is free if you buy a combination ticket for the ferry and Tour bus. Connecting bus services are also free if you buy a Tour ticket from the service bus driver. Pick up a Tour leaflet from The Village News by Milford village green. The shop is also a New Forest National Park official local information point. Alternatively, the Tour timetable is available online and is printed and attached to bus stops. Remember to bring something to protect you from the sun and an extra layer as it can be breezy as well as exhilarating on the top deck! Bikes and well-behaved dogs are welcome.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!
