Matador Original Series

Coffee Gear for Coffee Fanatics
If you’re anything like me, you need a strong hit of coffee to start the day right. Downing a double espresso in Rome might do the trick pronto, but there are times when you need to brew your own to make it through the day.
Here are some of the best — and worst — travel coffee products we’ve seen.
Single Stove-Top Espresso Machine
The single stove-top espresso machine is certainly the gourmet choice, but the weight!
Believe it or not, I carried a double mocha pot through my first seven countries of international travel…using it about ten times in two months.
A Bialetti has style, grace and screams you’re a coffee aficionado, but walk your first couple of miles and see if your shoulders scream louder.
MSR MugMate Coffee Filter
Lightweight and easy to clean, the MSR MugMate Coffee Filter is fine for those after a quick filter coffee hit. Place the mesh framing into your cup, spoon in some ground coffee then pour boiling water over the top. It’s quick and easy. The only downside is that you need your own mug!
GSI H2JO! Water Bottle Coffee Maker
The GSI H2JO! Water Bottle Coffee Maker has a similar style but comes with a lighter build. This thin plastic is going to save you on weight, but you might end up burning your fingertips while on a train or other form of transportation.
Kathmandu Coffee Plunger/Cup
The Kathmandu coffee plunger/cup is my pick of the bunch, combining efficiency with weight and ease of use. It’s a great combination of french press and insulated travel mug. Spoon ground beans into the bottom of the mug then add boiling water. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before adding the cap and plunging away.
Pacific Cornetta Thunder Press Mug
Similar in function, and handier for American buyers, the Pacific Cornetta Thunder Press Mug also finds a balance between weight and good taste…and just sounds awesome! The Thunder Press reminds me of Saturday morning cartoons, late night at the speedway, and ice creams around the world. It is similar in function to the Kathmandu and REI mugs, will easily fit in a car’s coffee holder, and has the funkiest name of all.
Quick Cafe II Travel Coffee Maker
Moving into the slightly ridiculous, the Quick Cafe II Travel Coffee Maker claims “ it is easy to make cafe style coffee with the Quick Cafe II Travel Coffee Maker. ” It might be easy to make coffee, but it’s not easy to lug around in one’s pack!
Travel? Sure, travel from the hotel room to the lobby!
This is one piece of plastic that should stay on the production line.
Mello Smello Scratch and Sniff Stickers
We still want to offer a way for the space or weight conscious to get your caffeine hits…and this is the best we can do. The Mello Smello scratch and sniff stickers can be stuck inside your journal cover and supply you with an unending supply of java scents — just enough to get you to a cafe.
Matador Coffee Mugs
Just want something to carry your coffee in? Fancy a little individual style? Cafepress allows you to upload your own images to adorn the travel mug of your dreams. You can’t make coffee with it, but you can certainly carry it in style.
You can even buy gear to support sites you love — like Matador’s own ceramic beauties.

Travels with my Kathmandu coffee mug
If you are a coffee-holic & a bit of a coffee snob to boot, then this review is tailor made for you. Especially if you travel/hike/climb/trek. And even more so if you can’t stand instant coffee.
Wearied by frankly revolting coffee in so many (otherwise amazing) places, uncaffeineated at the start of days in (otherwise amazing) remote parts of the globe, this gift, below, from a fellow coffee-holic & trekking friend was beyond perfect.

It’s a thermal portable coffee plunger mug from Kathmandu – the company, not the city.
So all you need to do is pack a bag of ground coffee, get boiling water from your hotel/camp cook/boil it yourself (hey, you can figure this bit out, right?) and Bob’s your uncle.
The only teensy flaw in this jug is that when your pour out the coffee, it leaks a little from the top, but that is such a small price to pay for having one’s morning caffeine fix that it hardly counts. I checked the website just now, when sharing the link with you and, guess what I found?
- Lid is not completely spill proof
There you are, then.
In the 3 years I have had this mug, it has travelled all over the place with me, since it weighs virtually nothing and saves my life every morning. It’s tough, and in 3 years in backpacks it has precisely one scratch, and I’m still trying to puzzle out where it came from.
Together, we have been up to the Himalayas (I live in India), we have been climbing in Ladakh, to Africa (where we used to live) to Myanmar, Sri Lanka.

Have Kathmandu coffee mug, will travel is now my new mantra.

Description
A great double walled plunger mug. Perfect for travelers, people on the go or even those at work can't put up with the instant coffee being served any longer.
Simple and easy to use and clean. Just follow these easy instructions:
1. Place mug on a flat, heat proof, non-slip surface. 2. Remove the plunger by pulling it straight up and out of the mug. 3. Spoon desired amount of freshly ground coffee or tea leaves into the mug. Add hot water, taking care not to exceed the maximum fill line. 4. Stir well and leave to brew for 3 - 4 minutes. 5. Holding the mug with one hand, use the other hand to insert the plunger into its channel and slowly press down completely. Add milk and sugar to taste and stir well. Enjoy your fresh tea or coffee!! 6. After use simply rinse and clean both the mug and plunger separately and leave to dry.

Bad. and badly made
bought one of these via the Kathmandu web shop and when I received it the plastic plunger piece appeared not straight and there were signs of stressed plastic around the circular compression plate. It appeared to have been cross threaded, I pulled it apart thinking I could likely screw it in straight and move on. not the case, a genuine manufacturing fault. Personally returned it to a physical store hoping to swap it over but the other 3 on the shelf all had the same issue, an issue that would have resulted in the plastic plate snapping off from the centre after a couple of uses. I would have give this product zero but the staff were entirely helpful.

I've had mine for 10 years. It works just fine. The plastic outer coating has split in a couple of places, but it hasn't affected its function. I would buy one again. Would prefer it if there was a smaller option. Bit expensive. What else can you say about a coffee plunger? Stainless steel, strong Plastic coating could have been done more robustly. Would prefer it if there was a smaller option. Bit expensive.

Whether you are looking for something to perk up your morning commute or want to sip a hot cup of joe on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere, a portable coffee maker is an absolute game-changer.
From single cup heaters to coffee makers you can share with friends, a portable coffee maker is a travel must-have for those who never want to miss a coffee fix, wherever they are headed.
Sure, you could nip into the nearest Starbucks (or other coffee shops available) and grab a paper cup on the go. But being able to brew your favorite hot beverage is far more satisfying and much more cost-effective.
Portable coffee makers are, among other things:
An automatic coffee maker can brew up a cup at the touch of a button. Your morning cup can be just as tasty as it is at home, even on the road.
Fancy lattes and other brews can be expensive. Nice for the occasional treat, but buying 1 every day can soon add up. Making your own will save you money from the get-go.
Compact, discreet, and easy to take with you, a portable coffee maker can fit in your carry-on bag and be produced for a brew whenever you need it.
Blendable To Suit Your Tastes
Once you get used to using your coffee maker, you will soon be brewing like a barista as you mix blends and flavors to create your perfect cup.
Because not all coffee makers are the same, they offer varying ways to brew your coffee on the go.
The most common types of coffee makers include:
Pour-over Coffee Makers
Possibly the best option for longer journeys, pour-over coffee makers are compact and light as a feather. Carry just a few grams of your favorite blend and voilà — a perfect coffee on the go. The only downside to these types of coffee makers is that you may have to wait a few minutes for your brew.
French Press
French press coffee makers work by immersing all of the coffee in hot water to capture more of its natural flavor, resulting in a rich, strong cup of coffee. While the coffee may be better, the cleaning processes take longer, and some French press coffee makers are more portable than others.
Espresso Makers
If you like your coffee dark, a portable espresso maker will give you big flavors on the go. As the machine applies pressure to the beans, the maximum flavor and oils spill out, giving the same result as bigger coffee machines, but in a compact and completely portable format. These models are the most expensive but will be a big hit with true coffee connoisseurs.
Hot Tip: Check out our favorite travel mugs to go with your travel coffee maker.
When choosing your perfect portable coffee maker, consider the following:
Portability
One of the most important features of a portable coffee maker is that it needs to be “portable” — the clue is in the title. Some types of coffee makers are far larger and bulkier than others, so look for one that suits your needs.
Whichever type of coffee maker you favor, it needs to be easy to carry and not take up too much space. Otherwise, you may as well leave it back at home.
Hot Tip: Look for lightweight materials like silicone, and consider coffee makers that are complete and without the need for lots of other fancy accessories.
Traveling can take its toll on your possessions, and you need to make sure that you buy appliances and devices that will go the distance. Stay clear of delicate glass coffee makers and opt instead for reinforced materials such as plastic, silicone, or even aluminum for guaranteed durability.
Brewing Time
A portable coffee maker is almost pointless if you have to wait half of your journey time for it to brew. Choose appliances that take between 30 seconds to 5 minutes to brew, and you can enjoy speedy coffee on the go.
Ease of Cleaning
Dirty coffee is not good coffee. Consider where you are headed and how easy the coffee maker will be to clean when you get there. If you are hotel-based or have an apartment, you can enjoy the luxuries of a hot tap and maybe even a dishwasher, but if you are camping in the middle of nowhere, you should choose a coffee maker that is easy to clean, with minimal components.
Coffee for 1? 2? Or maybe more than a few? The size of your coffee maker could determine how grumpy your fellow travelers will be in the morning. You can be the chief coffee maker for as many as you want, but remember that the larger the capacity of the appliance, the bigger and bulkier it is likely to be.
Nearly every appliance or device you take with you will eventually need charging or require some form of power to make it work. Your portable coffee maker will be no different, but you need to be sure how you need to power it before you go.
Those that don’t run on elbow grease alone will run on electricity or batteries. To ensure your charging needs match your destination, read the instructions and reviews before you buy.
The 4 Best Espresso Makers for Travel
There are many different types of portable coffee makers out there to choose from, all of which will brew you a great cup of coffee. Here are some of our favorites.

Wacaco Minipresso GR, Portable Espresso Machine
Claiming to be one of the smallest and lightest handheld espresso machines on the market , the Wacaco Minipresso could be everything you need for your next big adventure.
Hand-operated and easy to use, the Minipresso uses a semi-automatic piston to allow small quantities of water to be injected into the coffee adapter. After a few pushes, the optimal extraction pressure is achieved, creating a wealth of rich and bold espresso flavors.
This impressive-looking bullet-shaped coffee maker comes with all the accessories you need to brew up a great single cup of coffee, as well as a travel case to keep it safe on the go. It is one of the more expensive models on this list, but its innovative design, sleek good looks, and impressive espresso-making capabilities make the price tag well worth it.

The Best Weekend Getaways From Kathmandu, Nepal

Contributor
Those who spend an extended time in Nepal’s capital soon start to crave fresh air, open spaces, and a bit of greenery. Although the city of Kathmandu provides none of these things, you, fortunately, don’t have to go very far to find them. Here are some of the best weekend getaways from Kathmandu.
View all trips, panauti: home to nepal’s oldest surviving temple.
Located about 45km (28mi) from the capital city, just east of the Kathmandu Valley, Panauti is one of the oldest towns in Nepal. Built on a large rock, it is known to be somewhat earthquake-proof – it did, in fact, escape two major earthquakes, including the one in 2015.

The main temple, the Indreshwar Mahadev Temple, has been standing since 1294, making it the oldest surviving temple in the country. Apart from this historic site, the town includes the beautiful Durbar Square, ghats beside the river, restored mansions, picturesque farmland perfect for casual walks, and defined trails for longer day hikes.
Getting here: Buses run from Kathmandu’s Ratna Park bus stand and take up to two hours.

Where to stay: Find accommodation at one of the Community Homestays run by a network of women in Panauti – and across Nepal. These homestays give local women an independent source of income and guests a unique experience.

Nagarkot: Stunning views of the Himalayas
Nagarkot, 32km (19mi) from Kathmandu, has been a popular place for sunrise views of the Himalayas for quite some time, which means you won’t have the town to yourself. But there’s no denying that the views are great on a good day, with Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Everest and Numbur Himal visible.
Getting here: Those on a budget can get to Nagarkot by bus, first from Kathmandu (Ratna Park or Lagankhel) to Bhaktapur, then onward to Nagarkot. Visitors on a more relaxed budget, or those travelling with some friends, can hire a taxi for around NPR 2500 (US$25). The return trip might be more expensive because there is less competition between taxis.
Where to stay: Hotels and rooms facing north are more expensive, as they have the better views. Stay at the aptly named Hotel at the End of the Universe for cosy charm, or the more upmarket Club Himalaya with private balconies.

Dhulikhel: More views and a luxury escape
Dhulikhel is a bit more ‘local’ than Nagarkot, but the views are every bit as good and it’s still close to Kathmandu, just off the Arniko Highway to the east. Dhulikhel is notable for being home to one of the finest resorts in Nepal, Dwarika’s Dhulikhel Resort . If your pockets are deep and you’re in need of a luxurious weekend outside the city, you really can’t go beyond this accommodation. If you’re there for the weekend, you probably won’t want to leave the resort, but there are nice walking trails nearby.
Getting here: If staying at the resort, they can arrange transportation. Otherwise, buses go from Ratna Park and take about two hours.
Where (else) to stay: If Dwarika’s isn’t quite within your budget – or even remotely close – another great option is the Dhulikhel Boutique Hotel.

Namo Buddha: Pilgrimage site
Namo Buddha is one of the holiest Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage sites outside of Tibet, as Buddha himself is believed to have visited here. The town has two main points of interest: the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, and the Namo Buddha Stupa, down the hill from the monastery. This little place gets particularly lively during Buddhist festivals.
Getting here: Take any bus from the Ratna Park bus stand that’s passing through Banepa; get down at Banepa and change to a Namo Buddha-bound bus. It should take around two to three hours. You could also hire a taxi.
Where to stay: The gorgeous Namo Buddha Resort is so good that people travel here all the way from Kathmandu just for lunch. Even better if you have time to stay for a night or two. The individual Nepali-style cottages are surrounded by pretty gardens, from which the all-vegetarian meals are sourced. Views of the Himalayas are also spectacular, rivalling those from Nagarkot or Dhulikhel.

The Trisuli River: White water rafting and camping
The Trisuli River runs parallel to the Prithvi Highway for much of the first half of the journey between Kathmandu and Pokhara. After a couple of hours, you’ll start to see colourful flotillas of rafts bobbing up and down the river. White water rafters ply the stretch of river between Fishling and Mugling, along which are a number of campsites and low-budget resorts catering to groups of rafters. If you want to give rafting a try , a weekend on the Trisuli River is a good idea, as it’s a fairly easy run, with fun and bouncy rapids that aren’t too big.
A good day excursion from the towns along the Trisuli River is the Manakamana Temple which you can get to via a cable car. It’s just up the highway from both the Riverside Springs Resort and Gorkha Beach. A return ride will cost around US$20 for non-Nepalis, but it’s well worth it.
Where to stay and getting here: To stay at a beachside camp in perma-tents, book a package with a company such as Equator Expeditions . You’ll get transport to and from Kathmandu, rafting opportunities, overnight accommodation at a camp – such as Gorkha Beach in the village of Buttar – and hot meals.
If rafting isn’t on the cards but a riverside escape still sounds appealing, head to the Riverside Springs Resort in Kurintar. It’s easy to reach as the Greenline buses from Kathmandu stop here. The cabins are comfortable, and the beautiful pool is fed by fresh spring water, making it icy cold even in the sticky summer heat.

The Bhote Kosi River: A more adventurous getaway
The other raftable river within easy reach of Kathmandu is the Bhote Kosi, to the northeast. The Arniko Highway that runs all the way to the Tibet border isn’t nearly as busy as the Prithvi Highway to Pokhara, so the rafting camps along the Bhote Kosi (such as Rafting Star ) are a little more peaceful – if your visit doesn’t coincide with groups of Kathmandu students, that is.
If you’d like to try some other adventurous activities, head to the Last Resort , further up the highway. Upon arrival at the site, you’ll have to cross a long suspension bridge over the Bhote Kosi River to get to the resort in the woods on the other side. You can bungee jump or try the canyon swing from this very bridge, there’s a high ropes course on the grounds, and they also run canyoning trips to nearby waterfalls for some splashy abseiling fun.
Getting here: The Last Resort and other rafting outfitters have private buses for their guests, which usually leave from, or around, Thamel.

Nuwakot Bazaar: For a historical visit
Nuwakot means ‘nine forts’ and is historically a very important place. It was from Nuwakot Bazaar that Prithvi Narayan Shah launched his attack on the Kathmandu Valley in 1768 that would lead to the unification of Nepal as we know it. It’s northwest of Kathmandu and was badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake – all the more reason to visit and help the local economy and restoration efforts.
The seven-storey, late 18th-century Nuwakot Palace is the main point of attraction, with its intricately carved wooden doors and windows. There are also lovely views of the Trisuli River from the town, and a number of hiking trails.
Getting here: A private vehicle rented in Kathmandu – usually with a driver – is the best way to reach Nuwakot Bazaar. It takes around three hours.
Where to stay: Like Panauti, there’s a Community Homestay in Nuwakot. Alternatively, the Famous Farm , a renovated Newar house with unbeatable views of the Nuwakot Durbar and palace, is highly recommended.

Pharping: Rice terraces and religious sites
A weekend in Pharping doesn’t actually require leaving the Kathmandu Valley, though it certainly feels like it. About an hour south of central Kathmandu, in the hills on the southern edge of the valley, is this small settlement surrounded by rice terraces, numerous Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and containing some very important Hindu and Buddhist religious sites. Pharping itself is a Buddhist pilgrimage site because of its holy cave where Guru Rinpoche, or Padmasambhava, is said to have meditated. A bit further up the road from Pharping is the Hindu Dakshinkali Temple, where animal sacrifices are made. The two towns can be seen in one visit, and the hills and farmland are lovely for hiking.
Getting here: Buses leave from the Old Bus Park in Kathmandu – which, rather confusingly, has a new location – to Dakshinkali; ask to be dropped off in Pharping.
Where to stay: The Neydo Monastery Hotel is a comfortable guesthouse attached to an impressive Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Here, you can learn about Buddhism from the monks in the ornately decorated halls. For a more secular experience, we recommend the Haatiban Resort . Kathmandu-based yoga studio Pranamaya Yoga often organises weekend yoga retreats in Pharping, held at the Neydo Monastery or Haatiban Resort.

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers
7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).
However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).
3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.
4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.
5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.
6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.
7. The highest restaurant in Europe

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

The Kathmandu coffee plunger/cup is my pick of the bunch, combining efficiency with weight and ease of use. It's a great combination of french press and insulated travel mug. Spoon ground beans into the bottom of the mug then add boiling water. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before adding the cap and plunging away.

It's a thermal portable coffee plunger mug from Kathmandu - the company, not the city.
