The government of the Republic of Korea announced that from April 1, 2023 to December 31, 2024, the Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) is no longer required for U.S. citizens visiting Korea for 90 days or less for business or tourism.

U.S. citizen visitors to the Republic of Korea still need a visa for all other purposes, including employment, teaching English, and stays longer than 90 days.

Travelers with nationality of Visa Waiver countries are eligible to apply for KETA. If you do not receive a KETA, you will not be permitted to enter the Republic of Korea, so we recommend that you apply early.

K-ETA or the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization is now a travel essential document for people entering the Republic of Korea from a visa-exempt country.

South Korea has launched K-ETA, which is known as the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization system, to cover the travel of people coming into the country from September 1, 2021. Since most visa waivers for most countries were adjourned when the COVID-19 pandemic peaked in April 2020, this K-ETA form will be necessary for travel. People overseas planning to travel to Korea need to obtain electronic approval before entering the Republic of Korea by submitting related information online such as their travel information and details.

Visa-free abroad invitees need K-ETA approvals to obtain the boarding pass and to enter the Republic of Korea. The K-ETA will be effective for several trips over two years, and the application fee is 10,000 KRW/person. For K-ETA pass documentation, all you need is a valid passport, e-mail address, fee, and photo ID.

With this form, you can move around freely after submitting the arrival card, making the whole immigration process much more manageable.

Is K-ETA Essential?

It is necessary for nationals of 66 visa-waiver countries and 46 designated visa-free entry countries whose strategy is to travel to the Republic of Korea. However, due to the pandemic, from September 1 onwards, all these people will need to apply for the authorization before travel. 

South Korea K-ETA Requirements

The process for the Priority entry applicants will use both previous visa issuance methods and K-ETA Application. The official K-ETA website i.e.,  www.k-eta.go.kr  available in languages such as Korean, English. You can also access it through the mobile app and apply 24 hours before traveling.

If you are planning for a group of travelers, a representative can apply up to 30 people, and the charges per person are KRW 10,000.

One such mandatory rule is to follow the Quarantine of 14 days for all overseas tourists to Korea.

Upon coming, the submission of the PCR Negative Test Result documentation is different from that submitted for visa application. All tourists need to get the test and carry the certificate before leaving for Korea. Those who do not present the report or present an invalid document will be denied entry into Korea.

South Korea ETA Application Form

• The first step of the K-ETA application is filling in a form. You will be asked to provide basic personal information (name, nationality, date of birth), travel information, and contact details. The application must be submitted with the applicant’s face photograph (which may be taken with a mobile camera). Ensure the given email address works as the approved document will be delivered via email.
• Pay the visa fee with the most comfortable online payment method, and check for the payment confirmation and the application number that will be delivered to your email.
• Wait for the approval. Save the document. It will be sent via email in a PDF file.

K-ETA Validity

It's about to become more complicated for Americans to visit South Korea

Starting in September, all U.S. citizens visiting South Korea will be required to complete an Electronic Travel Authorization form to get approval before traveling, the country's Ministry of Justice announced earlier this year.

The Korean government first launched the K-ETA as a pilot program in April to provide visa-free entry for international visitors to the Republic of Korea, according to a press release from the Korean Embassy in the U.S. The United States is one of 21 countries currently with designated visa-free entry.

U.S citizens are able to spend up to 90 days in the country as a tourist, for business or to visit family.

U.S. citizens are required to apply for the K-ETA through the Republic of Korea's ETA website or the mobile app at least 24 hours before departing for South Korea. Although the fee is waived, for now, the K-ETA will cost $8.75 come September and is valid for two years. You can expect to hear back regarding the status of your application via email, also within 24 hours.

K-ETA application steps 

The first step involves agreeing to the terms and conditions, which is standard for most travel authorization forms and requires your consent to the use of personal and sensitive information, including your passport number.

Next, you will provide your passport number and email address, to which your application information will be sent. Unless you are traveling for work, I would suggest using a personal email address that you check often.

The third step will ask you to upload a copy of your passport and enter corresponding information.

You'll see below that the U.S. pops up as a country currently designated as having visa-free entry. Note that if there are any issues with your application, you may still be prompted to contact the Korean Embassy in the U.S . for consular/visa services, which we will discuss later.

Step four asks for additional identifying information, along with the address and contact number of where you will be staying in Korea.

This step also asks you to upload a photo, similar to what's required to obtain a U.S. passport (i.e., no smiling), and also specifies photo size restrictions. It took me several minutes to size my photo down to fit. To avoid any headaches with sizing, I would recommend getting your photo taken as if you were applying for a passport. I got mine taken in June for my passport renewal (read the ongoing saga ) at CVS for $14.99.

If you click "Next," and it prompts you to step five, you can safely assume that your photo has been uploaded correctly and meets all size requirements.

The final step will ask you to double-check that all of the info you've submitted is correct.

For those applying from now through August, please note that K-ETAs are being issued for free as part of the K-ETA pilot program. This means that once you press "Finish," your application will be submitted for review. For the purposes of this story, I did not actually intend to submit an application as I do not currently have travel plans to South Korea. I incorrectly assumed that after hitting "Finish," I would be directed to step six before actually submitting.

At this point, I am admittedly a bit panicked, as I have inadvertently submitted false information to a foreign government. I immediately email the powers that be to explain my error by submitting a question through the website's " Ask Us " feature.

So, if and when I go to South Korea in the future (here's looking at you, boss), I will simply need to reapply for a K-ETA. Phew!

Bottom line 

The K-ETA is not only necessary to enter South Korea at this time, but it will also exempt you from submitting arrival cards necessary for immigration. Please note that the K-ETA does not exclude travelers from current pre-travel testing requirements. Per the U.S. Embassy in South Korea , proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure is still required for all inbound travelers, including those who have been vaccinated, in addition to a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon entry for most visitors. You can apply for a quarantine exemption based on certain eligibility requirements, including visiting family or attending a funeral.

What is the south korea eta.

The South Korea ETA is a mandatory travel document required by Korean immigration authorities for visitors whose nationality is exempted from a visa.

Who doesn’t need to apply for the South Korea ETA?

Starting from April 1, 2023, until December 31, 2024, visitors from 22 countries/regions will not require a South Korea ETA. This move was initiated by the South Korean government to celebrate "Visit Korea Year". The countries/regions included in this initiative are:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, UK, and US (including Guam).

However, please note that citizens of these countries/regions can still apply for a K-ETA online, which will allow them to skip filling out an arrival card upon arrival at the South Korean airport. The K-ETA is a Multiple Entry travel document with a validity period of 2 years after arrival .

If you have more than one nationality, you should choose the nationality of the passport that you are going to use for the trip.

Your passport must be valid by the time of your trip to South Korea. It must be a regular passport.

If you get a new passport for any reason, you will need to re-apply for a new K-ETA.

Starting from April 1, 2023, until December 31, 2024, travelers from 22 countries/regions won’t need to apply for a South Korea ETA.

My application couldn’t be completed due to an error. What now?

What can i do if my south korea eta application has been canceled or rejected.

From April 2022, nationals of visa waiver countries or designated visa-free countries must obtain ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before entering The Republic of Korea.

​For entry to Korea, all foreigners must have a K-ETA (for visa-free visitors) or a valid visa (for visa-required visitors) to enter Korea. The K-ETA process will take up to 72 hours and the result will be sent to your email address directly. Visitors need to have the printed hard copy ready.

Irish nationals are eligible to enter and stay in Korea for up to 90 days with a K-ETA for tourist purpose.

Using the Q-code system is recommended for all people entering South Korea to upload their health condition and after entry COVID-19 test results.

Day 1 PCR test will not be mandatory from people entering South Korea from October 1. Korean and foreigners who wish to get a COVID test, may visit the Public Health center of their resident area to get a test free of charge.

- A valid Q-Code. Foreign tourists are required to register their vaccination history through the Quarantine COVID-19 Defence (Q-Code) System before your trip.

What Are The K-ETA Photo Requirements?

Less than 700 x 700 pixels.

The passport-size picture must :

Be a recent photograph (taken in the last 6 months).

Be in full color.

Not blur and have no glare or shadow.

You need to wear everyday clothes, your eyes should be visible, and you must have a neutral facial expression.

K-ETA Photo Requirements For Infants And Babies :

If you travel to South Korea with a child, you should be aware that they need their own South Korean visa or K-ETA. A few extra photo requirements apply specifically to young children and babies:

Babies and infants cannot hold any objects in the photo, like toys, pacifiers, and bottles.

The child or baby’s eyes must be open and fully visible, and the mouth must be closed.

The top of the shoulders must be visible, and the head should fill around 70% of the photo.

The photo can be of the child sitting, being held, or lying on the floor. However, the hands of others cannot be visible in the photo.

The visa photo size for children is the same as for adults.

What Are The Passport Requirements For The K ETA?

To apply, you must have a valid passport that meets the requirements. You must make sure that your passport has two blank pages and is valid for at least 6 months after your intended date of travel. You won't be able to apply without a valid passport.

The passport you use to travel to South Korea must be the same one used to complete the ETA application form. Dual nationals with multiple passports (dual nationality) should keep this in mind.

South Korea Travel Authorization Application Process

You can apply for your K ETA in two ways, through Atlys or through the K ETA official website. I'll discuss the application process for both.

How To Apply Through Atlys

If you choose to apply through the Atlys app, the application process will look like this.

The first and most obvious step is that you have to download the Atlys app. Once you have, you can log on and choose the country you want to travel to. Next, you need to enter your travel dates and complete the application form.

The best thing about the Atlys app is that you can scan your documents, and the app will automatically upload the information. All you need to do is check if the information is correct!

Next, you need to upload the required documents and pay the visa fee of USD 50 . Then, you can submit your application.

Atlys will keep you up to date on the progress of your K ETA via the email you used to apply.

How Can I Apply For A K-ETA For South Korea?

Applying for a K-ETA for South Korea is very straightforward. I'll take you through the application process in a step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Access the K ETA website

First, you need to access the K-ETA official website you use to apply. Next, you need to select "Apply for K-ETA" at the top. Then, you must select your continent and agree to the terms and conditions.

Step 2: Provide your email address

Next, you need to provide a valid email address. This is the address they'll use to contact you, so make sure it's correct. You must also provide your passport number.

Step 3: Enter passport information

Next, you need to provide your passport information. The relevant information they'll need includes the following:

Your passport biodata page.

Date of birth.

Surname and name (in English).

The expiration date of your passport.

Step 4: Enter application information

Next, you need to complete the K-ETA application form. You need to provide information like your name, address, hotel bookings, flight information, arrival date, and exit date.

How Much Does A K-ETA Cost?

The K ETA fee is 10,000 KRW per person ( 9-10 USD , additional charges aren't included), and you can pay the fee with one of the global online payment-enabled international credit cards or debit cards.

Note that the application fee is non-refundable after payment is made, regardless of the result of the application.

How Long Does It Take For A K-ETA To Be Approved?

The processing time for the ETA is 72 hours , but it can be as fast as 30 minutes. It all depends on if your information is correct and whether or not they're receiving a high volume of applications.

What Is The Validity Of The K-ETA?

The K-ETA is valid for 90 days , and you can only apply if your purpose of travel is for leisure or tourism. If you wish to stay in South Korea longer than the ETA permits, you must apply for a visa before you travel.

What Can I Expect At Immigration?

Unfortunately, the K-ETA is not a visa that allows you to enter South Korea. Immigration officials decide whether or not you can enter and how long you can stay. I know this sounds scary, but I have some tips for you to ensure your entry.

Tip Number One :

Make sure that you have your valid passport (the one you use for the K-ETA application), return flight ticket, proof that you can cover the costs of your trip (bank statements), and your printed K-ETA.

Tip Number Two :

Be prepared. Immigration officers might ask you a few questions regarding your trip before entering South Korea. The question might be along the lines of your purpose of travel, your country of origin, and how long you plan on staying in South Korea.

Tip Number Three :

Stay calm. Remember, they're just doing their job. If you have everything you need, there's no reason to worry!

In What Cases Should I Re-Apply For My K-ETA?

You must apply for a new South Korea ETA if One of the following information changes:

Nationality.

Passport number.

Passport expiration date.

Criminal record.

If any of the information mentioned above changes, you must apply for a new ETA, even if your current one is still valid.

An Extra Tip!

If you have any questions during your application or just questions in general. You can go to the K-ETA website and click on "Notice." Underneath, there will pop up different categories. Click on "Ask Us."

This will then take you to another page where you must agree to the terms and conditions and enter your valid email address. Once you click next, you can type up your question or concerns, and you'll receive feedback on the same email you used.
