MOSCOW TO MICKEY

When Moscow on Ice performer Andrei Torossian and his wife, Irina Kortchach, defected to this country in 1990, they had no idea what they would do for a living. ''Wouldn`t you know it,'' says Torossian. ''I wound up skating alongside one of the greatest symbols of America, Mickey Mouse.''

Torossian and Kortchach both appear in Walt Disney`s World on Ice, along with the usual cartoon characters, Tuesday through Feb. 9 at the Chicago Stadium, 1800 W. Madison St.

Torossian, 24, is an Armenian from the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, and Kortchach, 28, is Jewish and from Moscow. In order to train, they both lived in the capital, where they say they were subject to persistent prejudice. ''Our lives were threatened many times,'' says Torossian. ''There was no future in Moscow.''

However, defection was too radical an idea to consider, even though they were set to tour in America with Moscow on Ice.

When they got to the U.S., it seemed like Shangri-La. And so, on their final tour stop in Detroit, Torossian and Kortchach escaped from their hotel. Today, Torossian says their defection was impulsive. ''We figured we had so little to lose,'' he adds.

Without a penny or for that matter a ruble to their names, and carrying only their ice skates and Russian-English American dictionary, they managed to flag down a police officer. Torossian recalls struggling to say: ''Please help us. We would like political asylum.''

After talking on his car radio, the officer took Torossian and Kortchach on a 45-minute ride. ''We were very scared,'' recalls Torossian. ''We had no idea where we were going, since we understood no English then. We assumed they might be taking us to the KGB or the Russian Embassy.''

Instead, they were taken to the county prosecutor`s office, where they were questioned for several hours. They spent the next three days and nights under armed guard at a local hotel. ''Finally, we heard the words that changed our lives,'' says Torossian, ''when a policeman told us through a translator, `You are free.''`

The story of the brave skating team was told by Detroit-area newspapers, TV and radio stations. ''American people we had never met gave us clothes, money and a place to stay,'' says Torossian. ''We felt like heroes, and I still don`t know what for. We just wanted a better way of life.''

Today, they have it. The couple took English lessons, but Torossian says, ''I learned the most from watching TV and the `Terminator` movies.''

At first, they worked for a Detroit-area ice arena as instructors. Walt Disney`s World on Ice hired the team last July, following an audition and a personal recommendation from former Olympian Peggy Fleming, who heard about their story.

In less than a year, Torossian and Kortchach have managed to see more of the United States than many Americans see in a lifetime. So far, Torossian lists Portland, Maine (''It`s a small town with hills and reminds me of home''), and Washington (''The heart of freedom'') as his favorites.

Torossian is a principal skater in this year`s double-feature Disney ice show. The first feature fills the first act. It`s a dramatic tale about a search for a missing explorer named Andy Jones, who is played by Torossian. Carolina Jones (Kristina Wegelius) leads an expedition team of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Louie and Baloo (from ''The Jungle Book'') and Donald Duck to search for Andy. With the magic assistance of a Puffer-Upper machine, Andy reappears and skates solo to celebrate.

In the second act, Roger Rabbit presents a series of video vignettes. It begins in the wild, wild West to the tune of ''Mamas Don`t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.'' Wegelius, a former Olympian from Finland, and the Polish ice-dancing team of Malgorzata Grajcar and Andrzej Dostatni are featured.

Later, in another of Roger`s video vignettes, Darkwing Duck ruffles his feathers over his greatest crime-fighting challenge. The caped mallard of mystery attempts to foil a gangster named Ice Head Harry (played by Torossian) who plans to steal the heart of sweet Dazzles the Duck.

Kortchach is a precision skater who appears in the chorus in several scenes.

Torossian adds, ''I never would have thought we would one day be skating with Mickey Mouse all over the United States. This country is amazing.''
