Italy to Switzerland in 25 Minutes: A Day Trip From Lake Como

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Sharing is caring!

It wasn’t until I zoomed in on a map of Lake Como, looking for nearby places to visit, that I saw how close it was to Lugano, Switzerland. I then decided I’d spend a few nights in Switzerland, just to say I’ve been. Little did I know, I could get from Italy to Switzerland in just 25 minutes. And while Lugano is the perfect day trip from Lake Como, I happened to stay there a few nights although I only recommend two nights maximum.

Italy to Switzerland

My favorite thing about Lugano is the fact that I didn’t need to try and decipher yet another language as this town is located in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland. Three of the four national languages of Switzerland are Italian, French, and German, so if you know any of those, you’re good to go.

How to Get From Italy to Switzerland

The simplest way to get from Italy to Switzerland is by train although driving is fine too. I bought a $23 train ticket from raileurope.com to go from Lake Como to Lugano and the ride was a breeze. While my ride took exactly 39 minuets, the quickest route is 25 minutes. Driving time is typically 35 minutes so if you insist on driving, it should be an easy trip. Do keep in mind that you’ll have to find somewhere to park once in Lugano.

Check car rental prices here .

Looking at Lugano via map and in person reminds me so much of Lake Como, but once you see the two in person you can tell the difference. The areas around the lake are also vastly different as Lake Como seemed a lot more lively whereas certain parts of Lake Como seemed deserted to me. I could walk blocks over from the lake and maybe see a few other people on the street. I think the area is more akin to a downtown area that isn’t busy on weekends but you’re liable to see people going to and from work.

Easy Day Trips From Lugano

I hope no one is offended by this, but I didn’t feel as though Lugano had all that much to offer. The one person who was in my hostel longer than me actually took day trips every day, which is why I don’t recommend staying here more than two nights. There were exchange students everywhere so if you’re younger than 22, you may have a more exciting time than I did. However, the best thing about this area are the easy day trips from Lugano.

Day Trip from Lake Como

Day Trip to Lake Como, Italy

If you didn’t spend time in Lake Como prior to coming to Lugano then I highly recommend giving it a visit. Read here for my top recommendations of things to do in Lake Como. Some of my recommendations include visiting Bellagio, taking a walking tour of old town Como , and having a dining experience at a locals home.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Bellinzona is home to three medieval castles: Castelgrande, Montebello, and Sasso Corbaro. All three castles make one UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can purchase a ticket to tour them here . Because I had such trouble finding things to do in Lugano, I hopped on the train to Bellinzona one morning and walked from castle to castle and roamed around the grounds. While I’ve seen castles further east in Europe, they definitely weren’t medieval. This was a very cool experience and one of the best day trips from Lugano.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

Also check out this amazing food tour that allows you to taste the area of Bellinzona like a local. This self guided tour leads you to four places that are all within walking distance of each other. Bellinzona is definitely a walkable city so once you get off of the train you can either get around on foot or hop on the bus.

Zurich, Switzerland

The train from Lugano to Zurich takes just a little over 2 hours and for some of us, that’s an easy day trip. Since Lugano is located in Switzerland’s Ticino region, the Italian speaking region, Zurich is a stark contrast. Also anticipate the weather being much cooler in the northern city of Zurich.

If you decide to spend a full day in Zurich, consider purchasing the Zurich Card . The pass, valid for 24 or 72 hours, can help you save on museums, restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Castelgrande

Also be sure to check out these tours in and around Zurich:

  • 4-Hour City Tour by Ferry, Cable Car and Coach
  • Thermal Baths and Spa with Panoramic Views
  • 2-Hour Sightseeing Bus Tour
  • Day Trip to Grindelwald & Interlaken

San Bernardino, Switzerland

San Bernardino is a village in Switzerland known for its mountains. The San Bernardino Pass is extremely popular among hikers and because it’s located in the Swiss Alps, it’s a great place for skiing in the winter as well. There are several ski resorts in San Bernardino. If you’re not into hiking or skiing, you may want to skip this area.

Milan, Italy

If you’ve never been to Milan, one of the fashion capitols of the world, then it’d be a great day trip away from Lugano. The train ride is only about an hour and after visiting Milan on two occasions, I think it’s nice for a day trip versus spending an extended about of time there.

Bellinzona, Switzerland

When researching things to do in Milan two tours will always be recommended. 1. Visit the duomo and I personally recommend exploring the rooftop of the cathedral. Grab a rooftop ticket here . And 2. seeing the Last Supper painting. Book a guided tour for that here .

The Best Hotels In Lugano

Everyone knows that Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries on earth. I even hear residents constantly complain of how much things cost, so you know it’s bad. Hotels in Lugano are no different than restaurants and other activities. They’re expensive. In fact, that’s probably what you’ll spend the bulk of your money on, so be sure to choose wisely.

Here are the 7 best hotels in Lugano, Switzerland:

  • Lugano Dante Center
  • Hotel City Lugano, Design & Hospitality
  • Villa Sassa Hotel, Residence & Spa
  • Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola
  • Hotel Walter au Lac
  • Splendide Royal Lugano
  • Hotel Federale

Hi, We are visiting Como for 1 week in September and would like to do the Bernina Express tour ourselves from Como. Does option 1 still work above? Please confirm, thanks

Buongiorno Gary, come stai?

The do-it-yourself itinerary works, the only thing is the public transport: you always need to check the timetable because they can always vary. You can check online in the website of the ferry timetables and the train timetables.

Feel free to ask more information 🙂

Buongiorno We are travelling to Bellagio in April 2023. We are 3 adults. Please could you provide further information, including costings? thank you

Buongiorno Mona, how are you? You can send an e-mail to [email protected] and we forward your request to our guide. Grazie mille, have a nice day!

I am looking at transport from La Locanda del Cantiere to tirano and back. I intend to take the Bernina express and back. Please email me asap if possible.

Much appreciated

Buongiorno Vinod, thank you for your kind request. Regretfully we don’t offer intermediate service. You can book the tour online and then get in touch with the guide. He offers the tour from Lake Como, he’s based in Como, you can con contact him to organise the pickup. Here the tour we normally recommend: https://www.viator.com/it-IT/Lake-Como/d26113-ttd/p-120889P2?pid=P00091233&mcid=42383&medium=link&campaign=Bernina-with-Guide

We are wanting to take the Bellagio Express Train from Verena to St. Moritz and back. Both ways on the train only. How should we go about this? I’m a little confused about the tours and when there is a driving tour or multiple stops. We are fine with another stop along the way, but don’t necessarily want a driving tour. Also, is the train ride winding or is it straight with some curves as needed? I get sick on roads if it gets too winding and so never do mountains. However, I’m thinking maybe a train wouldn’t be so winding. Thank you.

Ciao Marcia, also Lake Como roads are a litle windy but if you go with a good driver who drives slow you just enjoy the views and that’s it (I suffer the car too so I know what you mean). The good thing of having a driver is that you can talk directly to him about your feelings and you can help you feeling better. That’s the good thing of a private tour with a small group. The guide/driver takes care of you.

The train is smooth and when I did it I had no problem. Anyway some coke helps me (I never drink it, just on emergencies when I travel together with a slice of lemon ☺️) The good thing of the private tour is that you don’t do the train rain twice.

All Lombardy region has windy roads but driving slowly helps you a lot!

I book like to book option 2 for a party of four adults, making sure that we get first class/panoramic car reservations. We would like to travel from Tirano to St. Moritz on the Bernina Express on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Is there a guide service you can recommend for the ground transportation? Thank you.

Ciao Caron, thank you for your kind request. I can highly recommend this tour https://www.viator.com/en-GB/tours/Lake-Como/Bernina-Express-and-Sankt-Moritz-Private-Guided-Tour/d26113-120889P2?pid=%20P00091233&mcid=42383&medium=link&campaign=bernina organized by a local English speaking guide. His tour is complete because he has it’s own minivan and he drives you directly from Lake Como. This is great because you do the Bernina Express only once, on the way back the guide drives you back from the Maloja pass. I hope this can be helpful!

Ciao Have a nice day

Buongiorno We will be staying in Varenna and would like to book your escorted tour of St Moritz on the Bernier Express on any day for the week beginning Mon 29th April 2024 please. This will be for two adults. Thank you

Ciao, the tour I recommend is this one: https://www.viator.com/it-IT/tours/Lake-Como/Bernina-Express-and-Sankt-Moritz-Private-Guided-Tour/d26113-120889P2?pid=P00091233&mcid=42383&medium=link&campaign=Bernina-with-Guide

The Roman poet Virgil declared Lake Como “our greatest lake ,” a proclamation that still rings true two thousand years later. For millennia, its lush green hillsides have plunged into the sparkling, opaque water that radiates hues of cobalt blue and emerald green. Today, grandiose villas preside over the lake, and clusters of pretty towns line its shores. Equal parts glamorous and discreet, the ancient Roman holiday destination hasn’t lost any of its appeal.

While Hollywood didn’t put Lake Como on the map, the lake’s popularity among A-listers and jet setters has undeniably helped catapult the northern Italian destination into the limelight. Behind its aura of mystique, though, Lake Como harbors a humble side that warrants just as much fanfare as its flashy counterpart. Below, you’ll find a list of the very best things to do in Lake Como, ranging from the widely touted to the lesser-known spots every traveler should have on their radar.

Como’s historic center

Clinging to the lake’s southwestern pocket, Como is an ideal jumping point for exploring the territory, but the city itself shouldn’t go uncharted. The remains of Como’s 33-feet-high medieval wall enclose its quaint historic center. Shops and restaurants stand snugly alongside each other in lively pedestrian streets that teem with picture-perfect sights , like elegant interior courtyards framed in arched doorways, the storybook-like Piazza San Fedele and the 15th-century Duomo, a magnificent Gothic cathedral. On the lakefront, Daniel Libeskind ’s  Life Electric  sculpture protrudes from the pier. The soaring steel voltage symbol pays homage to Alessandro Volta, the Como-born scientist who invented the electric battery. Passeggiata Lino Gelpi, a walkway to the left of the lake, leads to the bucolic manicured gardens of Villa Olmo.

The Silk Museum

Though the Comaschi had been spinning silk since the Renaissance, Como didn’t become Italy’s silk capital until the 19th century. It remains at the top of its game today as fashion designers worldwide source silk from within and around the city. The Silk Museum, adjacent to the Setificio silk trade school, depicts the local history of the shimmering textile. From silkworm feeding to dyeing to garment creation, the permanent exhibit covers every step of the production process through fabric samples, documents, tools, and machines. For silk souvenir shopping, head to  A. Picci  and  Inseta  in the historic center. Otherwise, the  Mantero outlet  in Grandate is just a 20-minute drive from the city.

The collection showcases 400 vessels, including row boats, sailboats , fishing boats, motorboats, racers, smuggling vessels, gondolas, and nautical equipment like oars, nets, and engines. In 2021, the museum inaugurated a permanent exhibition dedicated to  Ernesto Riva , otherwise known as “the Ferrari of Boats.” Founded in 1771, Riva remains the international benchmark for hand-manufactured wood boats today. Isola Comacina

Located beside Tremezzina’s shoreline, Isola Comacina was inhabited as far back as the Roman era and has the ruins to prove it. The lake’s only island , Comacina is remembered for a past that was just as glorious as it was tragic—it remained neglected until the 20th century after having been incinerated during a 12th-century conflict. Today, the remains of San Giovanni Romanesque church and three Rationalist-style 1930s artist residences jut out from the brushy blanket that coats the six-hectare landscape. The entrance into Lake Como from Bellano is a scenic canyon.

Orrido di Bellano

Cut into the craggy hillside on the lake’s upper eastern shore, the  Orrido di Bellano  is a 15-million-year-old gorge known for its roaring, 66-foot-high waterfall. Visitors succumb to the sublime in a safe backdrop during the misty, all-sensory experience.  Orrido  means horrific, a term applied to several of Italy ’s loud waterfalls. In this case, it could also allude to the lore and legends surrounding the cascade—a mysterious hexagonal tower known as  Ca’ del Diavol  (the Devil’s house), believed to have once hosted satanic rituals and black magic, stands just beside the entrance.

If one lakeside locale evokes the transportive powers of time travel, it’s Borgo Corenno Plinio, an exquisite medieval hamlet nicknamed the village of “1000 steps.” The visit commences in the main piazzetta, home to the 12-century Saint Thomas Becket of Canterbury church and the medieval castle whose battlements loom over the village. Travelers then descend a quaint cluster of red-roofed stone buildings lining rocky narrow lanes joined by 493 stone steps to arrive at the lake-level historic stone pier. Then, they retrace their steps back to the starting point on top. Entry to the town costs a little over $4, a fee recently implemented by the mayor to contribute to the village’s preservation costs.

Consequently, the heaving crowds can eclipse the town’s heirlooms, one of which is I Vetri di Bellagio , but it’s still well worth a visit. Tucked into a narrow lane close to the Punta Spartivento, this artisan glass shop has remained unchanged since its 1952 opening. Walking into the two-floor space immediately recalls a kaleidoscopic effect as glistening speckles of color surround you. Don’t let the glitz and glamour overshadow the scenery—the hiking trails and beaches are the best way for travelers to appreciate the natural surroundings . Dozens of hiking trails weave through the hillsides, including well-marked routes that pass through the three funicular towns.

In the lake’s upper reaches, the over 6-mile Greenway  joins Colonno, Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo, and Griante. A path in Ossuccio arrives at  Sacro Monte di Ossuccio , one of the nine complexes comprising the  Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy  UNESCO World Heritage site.

Although the shores are equipped with several beach clubs, a wild swim is the way to go. Lake Como’s best public beaches include Dongo on the western bank of the lake’s upper branch, the white-stone shores of Lierna and Abbadia Lariana north of Lecco, the pebbly San Giovanni near Bellagio and the turquoise Onno south of Bellagio.

Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps

I hadn’t expected snow. But now it was blowing sideways, and the wind was strong enough that it was hard to stand. Clouds swirled around me. Visibility at a minimum. I was OK but felt close to the edge — closer than I’d expected on a summer day.

But this was also the day that Chris, an American sitting in a mountain hut, drew me the last sketch I would need, leading me all the way to Lake Constance and the Rhine. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers.

Last summer, frustrated with the predictability of recent travel experiences, I set out to walk across Switzerland without a phone or a preplanned route. I allotted 12 days, beginning on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the west, and heading in the general direction of Lake Constance, in the northeast — a distance, as the crow flies, of about 150 miles.

Nostalgic for the time before ubiquitous connectivity, when we relied on paper maps and conversations with strangers, I came up with a novel way to organize my trip: Each day, I planned to ask locals I met to sketch hand-drawn maps for me, which I would then follow as best I could.

I wanted to know if it was possible to walk across a country like this. I wanted to know what it would teach me about how technology and convenience have changed the way we travel. I wanted to be lost, and to find my way through the artwork of strangers.

A small blue-gray tent sits in a grassy field which slopes down in front of a vast range of mountains, some grass-topped and tree-topped, and others rocky and snowy.

Day 1 5 miles, from a lakeshore through the old town of Montreux, through woods and Alpine meadows, to the clifftops of Rocher de Naye.

A hand-drawn map depicts two simple shapes — an oval and what appears to be the outline of a mountain — along with four short paragraphs of text.

I start at the edge of Lake Geneva. The sun is shining; only much later will I realize that what I crave more than a map is a weather forecast.

At a cafe in the lakeside town of Montreux, where I begin my walk, I meet a girl named Melanie, who draws me a map — annotated with beautiful, tiny script — that leads me uphill past a castle: the Caux Palace. She adds details about its history, as a site of negotiations on the future of postwar Europe.

The path uphill quickly enters a narrow river gorge — lush trees and suddenly a different world from the lakeside. I am alone. Higher, the woods open out into Alpine meadows, which hum with insects. The grass is so thick that at times I lose the path and wade upwards through a sea of flowers.

I hike for three hours — past the castle and its narrow turrets — then sleep out in the open, on a viewing platform near the summit. I’m elated: I made it through my first day.

Day 2 24 miles, directed by two cheesemakers and a retired schoolteacher, I walk down then up again, twice over, through two river valleys and past countless cows.

A hand-drawn map depicts a series of rounded lines, a drawing of a set of buildings, and a handful of short place-name labels.

The next morning, I head downhill toward a farm near Col de Chaude, a mountain pass where two cheesemakers draw my next map. First, though, is breakfast: cream piled on bread with a big wooden scoop. Meanwhile, a huge cauldron of milk heats over an open fire, on its way to being cheese.

Their map is simple: down from the farm, across a valley beside a dam and up toward a pass. Almost all the detail is in the house and the cowshed — there are five doors on the shed and a big chimney on the house, because, they say, “that’s where we make cheese over the fire.”

This teaches me something unexpected about maps. I was asking people how to get somewhere. But more often than not, what they illustrate were the things to which they pay attention. For these farmers, what is important is the number of doors on the cowshed and the limits to the valley they call home.

Later that day in a cafe in Château d’Oex, I talk to Charlotte, the retired schoolteacher sitting next to me. She orders ice cream for lunch. “I have watched my weight for 60 years and now I don’t care anymore,” she says.

Her map includes the number of meters I’ll need to climb and descend to reach the next valley. She remembers them exactly because she once ran over these passes.

Our attention is a gift. Reading maps is an act of empathy. They tell us as much about the person who made them as they do about the world.

Days 3 to 5 63 miles, from the gentler hills around the town of Gstaad into the higher Alpine terrain of the Bernese Highlands.

An elaborate hand-drawn map depicts a set of spotted cows, an Alpine lake, tall mountains, and what appears to be a wall of stones.

In my tent at night I’ve been reading Homer’s “Odyssey.” I’ve learned that in the ancient world, before hotels, travelers relied on the kindness of strangers — on expectations of what was called xenia, or hospitality — to form bonds with those who might otherwise have turned them away. Hosts also provided help for a guest’s onward journey.

I stop at a farmhouse, still ragged with sleep from my camp on a mountain pass. Through the half-open door an old couple and their grandson are eating breakfast. They have been up since dawn to milk the cows. They invite me in for coffee, bread and jam.

The farmer, Rudy, carefully draws me a map in between his morning tasks. He is busy, he says, but he wants to make me a good map: “I don’t want you to get lost,” he says. He gets out one of his own maps to check the compass points, then pencils them in. He tells me the farm has belonged to his family since 1664.

That night, having hiked along a winding path through crags and cliffs into Gstaad, and then along a rising stream toward a pass studded with farmhouses, I squeeze through a gap into an empty barn. I’m on the hillside above the town of Lenk and a thunderstorm has begun. I am drenched. I sit in the straw and eat the piece of cheese Rudy gave me as I left. I read about the chariot Nestor gives to Odysseus’s son to help him reach Sparta — help for the onward journey. I hang everything out to dry and listen to the roar of the rain.

The next day I follow the profile map that a man near the village of Adelboden drew for me, including where to find a “freezing shower.” I avoid it and swim in Oeschinen Lake instead, before sleeping in the grass of a meadow above.

Atop the Sefinenfurgge Pass, I ask two women, Lillan and Dora, to draw me a map to take me farther east. They work together, laughing wildly while they produce a picture that’s mostly of cows and flowers. Lillan is Norwegian and Dora is Australian. They are friends who haven’t seen each other in years but who have come to hike here together.

Once they finish, one of them says, “You thought you were asking us for something, but actually it was you who gave us a gift.”

A small wooden hut, open on one side, holds what appears to be a small refrigerator, in which an array of food is being held. In the distance, in the background, is a large rocky mountain topped with ice and snow.

Day 6 27 miles, past the imposing north wall of the Eiger, then over a pass toward the glacial Reichenbach Falls, made famous by Sherlock Holmes.

A hand-drawn map depicts an arced double-lined path with a series of labels — for towns, a waterfall, and various mountain peaks.

On my second climb of the day, up a mountain pass called the Grosse Scheidegg , I play a game to take my mind off my aching legs. It’s simple: Guess where the path will go next.

The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. The map mostly shows me the refuges I’ll pass, and what I should eat at each — which is delightful. But I’m also exhausted, and my guesses about which way the path will go are often wrong.

I have a habit of looking ahead. Even when doing something I love, I often imagine what’s coming next. I realize as I walk that not having a phone or a proper map — and thus not knowing what’s around the bend — has snapped me out of the habit. If I don’t know what’s coming, I can’t imagine myself there. Suddenly I’m present and engaged in a way I rarely am.

I look up to find a falcon hanging in the wind, caught in the roar of the air. It swoops, veering away down the valley.

Late that evening, I stumble into Victoria Restaurant , in the village of Meiringen. I eat the best meal of my trip. Simon, the chef, draws me a map that points uphill past several springs to the top of a mountain, where he’s added the label “Power Energy Stone.” It’s a special place, he says.

There’s a hotel above the restaurant. I stay the night, glad to have somewhere dry to sleep. In the morning I’ll go looking for magic rocks.

Days 7 and 8 43 miles, past three lakes (I swim in the second) and up a long valley to the Surenenpass, home to what I think might be the prettiest church in Switzerland.

A hand-drawn map, consisting mainly of squiggly line that drags across the page, shows towns, trees, mountain summits and a lake.

Nature is a murky concept here. In spite of the mountains, the landscape is very manicured: grazing meadows, clearly marked paths, carefully managed woods. What’s wild is well hidden.

In the evening I see a fox crossing a meadow above the town of Engelberg — all fur, and so light on its feet that it looks like a marionette: afloat, barely touching the stage. Marmots, a pair of them, very young, peer at me from across the path. They’re gone so quickly I barely see them move.

The curated landscapes make Switzerland the perfect place for this kind of adventure. It would be foolhardy to do this in Tasmania, where I’m from, or in the American West — places where you could really get lost. Here, yellow signs point to well-maintained public trails. (An article of the Swiss Constitution mandates that footpaths and hiking trails be maintained.) Villages and trains are never far away. Even with roughly sketched maps, it is possible to (mostly) not be lost.

In any case, Kris, a solo Danish hiker I meet beside the Trübsee Lake, draws me a map. I ask her for a weather forecast. “Rain all week. Maybe snow.”

Wilderness enough.

Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus.

A hand-drawn map depicts a path across a white page, including towns, mountain passes, lakes, and a place to eat.

Our brains, what the neuroscientist and philosopher Andy Clark calls “prediction machines,” get better over time at anticipating reality. Often we can imagine the world so well that we no longer have to look at it. And so, in familiar surroundings, it’s rare that our senses alert us that we’ve made a mistake — that what we first thought was a shadow is really an ibex poised under a tree in the dawn, for example.

Predictability is a privilege. It makes daily life easier. But it’s also a curse. By not paying attention, we don’t see the unexpected. We aren’t looking at the hillside trying to work out if the hand-drawn map we have is upside-down.

Before this trip, I imagined all the hours I would be able to simply think while I walked. What I didn’t account for is how much time I would spend thinking about whether I was lost. I also didn’t realize what I’d see when I paid attention to uncertainty, or how slowly time would pass when I had to look so closely at the world.

I walk through the sprawling canton of Schwyz, along a path made of huge granite slabs, following a map drawn by Peter and Andrea, two cheesemakers whose farm I pass. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country. I hardly see another person all day; it feels like the most isolated place I’ve been.

The next morning, after camping in a damp meadow above a lake called the Klöntalersee, I stop for breakfast at Gasthaus Richisau . A couple working at an artists’ retreat there draws me a map to get me to the Walensee, a lake near the border with Liechtenstein. They cannot understand why I insist on walking in the rain. They draw a bus on their map. “Why don’t you take this?” they ask. “You won’t get lost. It always leaves on time.”

A horned cow or bull stands in a large grassy field underneath dramatically gray and cloudy skies. In the distance are rolling hills, some dotted with forests.

Days 11 and 12 47 miles, through the craggy peaks and clifftop paths of northern Switzerland, toward the Rhine.

An elaborate and detailed hand-drawn map depicts a wide array of places, from lakes and mountains to towns and castles.

As I get closer to Lake Constance, my endpoint, the rain falls harder, until it is snowing sideways. I’m nearly blown over. It’s freezing, and so I start to run downhill to warm up. I laugh at how silly this whole thing is — and I’m still laughing when a tractor drives toward me. The farmer inside is dry and warm. He looks at me and laughs, too.

A man called Jon draws me a map of how to cross the canton of Glarus, which is bookended by the Klöntalersee and the Walensee, two exceedingly pretty lakes. With the inclement weather behind us, we forage for blackberries while we talk. He is there to BASE jump with a wingsuit and is camping by the lake in a van. His map is marked with cliffs and valleys — and the airport, which I guess one has to watch out for when you’re also a kind of flying machine.

Later, Chris, an American who has lived for decades nearby, draws me my final map. He has climbed and skied all over this region, and his map is among the most detailed of all: couloirs and climbing areas. I want to go in every direction. There’s material here for a lifetime of wandering.

When I finally get to Lake Constance, I jump in, despite the cold. Afterward, I calculate that I’ve walked about 250 miles. I largely avoided getting hopelessly lost.

After my swim, I walk along the lake to the train station. The timetable is printed on the platform, and the train arrives on time. Sometimes predictability is a blessing.

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of the waterfall made famous by Sherlock Holmes. It is Reichenbach Falls, not Trümmelbach Falls.

The pool at the Hotel Eden Roc on Lake Maggiore.

The stunning lakes region of Northern Italy is well known to American travelers, consistently ranking among their top European summer vacation spots. Celebrity (and tourist) infested Lake Como and glitzy Lake Lugano are certainly attractive destinations, but right next door lies another lesser-known lake - larger than its siblings, but just as beautiful and magical in its own unique way. Lake Maggiore – which translates to “greater” lake – is actually only part Italian, sitting on the border between Italy and Switzerland. And yes, it is great, offering a peace and tranquility that is now difficult to find on its neighboring lakes.

Near the northern tip of the lake, located in the Swiss canton of Ticino, lies a colorful and charming lakeside town called Ascona, which is best known for hosting a popular annual jazz festival and for being the lowest lying town in Switzerland. It is also home to the best hotel on Lake Maggiore – the five-star Hotel Eden Roc , recently named “Best Holiday Hotel” in Switzerland for the second consecutive year and 9th time overall by a prominent Swiss newspaper and renowned hotel expert Karl Wild. In a country packed with incredible hotels, that is no small feat.

Built in 1971, the 95-room hotel is actually composed of three structures which at one time were three separate properties, one of which was called the Eden Roc. The neighboring property was then added to encompass what are now the two main buildings of the hotel. When it comes to decor, the two wings offer contrasting styles. Conceived by Swiss interior designer Carlo Rampazzi, the left wing features vibrantly furnished rooms that utilize unique color combinations, striking shapes, and varied materials. The right wing employs a more restrained aesthetic, while still conveying a youthful ambiance. In 2010, the hotel added a third building – with yet a different style - to its property, the maritime-inspired Marina building, which connects to the main buildings via a walkway.

My suite in the right wing of the hotel was very large, featuring a large bedroom, living room, and massive bathroom – including one of the largest tubs I have ever had the pleasure of soaking in. It felt more like an apartment than a hotel room. All rooms at the Eden Roc offer a balcony or outdoor terrace, and my lovely spacious terrace easily accommodated a pair of chaise lounges.

When it is time to eat, the Eden Roc truly shines, offering no less than four outstanding restaurant options. Topping the list is the 2 Michelin-starred La Brezza (which has also garnered 18 Gault Millau points, for those keeping track), where Sicilian chef Marco Campanella serves light and fresh Mediterranean cuisine. For those arriving very hungry, the tasting menu at La Brezza was nothing short of spectacular.

La Casetta (14 Gault Millau points), which serves fresh pasta dishes and grilled freshwater and seafood specialties, is perhaps most notable for its picturesque and historic lakeside setting. Finally, the Eden Roc Restaurant (15 Gault Millau points) is where daily breakfast is served, along with glorious views of Lake Maggiore. And while technically not a restaurant, the Eden Bar is worth a mention. Its menu was large and impressive, including a list of creative (and delicious) non-alcoholic cocktails and a club sandwich that was one of the best I have ever had. I could have eaten at the bar – staring out over the lake – every day and been quite happy – but with all those other options, well, I didn’t!

The Eden Roc is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and the prestigious Swiss Deluxe Hotels group, but it is its affiliation with the Tschuggen Collection that best defines the hotel and its character. The Tschuggen Collection is a tight-knit, family-owned group of just 4 hotels, including 5-star properties in St. Moritz and Arosa, Switzerland. The group’s hotels in many cases share employees, who rotate between the hotels based on season, and whose personalized and genuinely friendly service seems to be a product and reflection of the intimate scale of the Eden Roc’s parent company. It is also no doubt due to the efforts of the Eden Roc’s Swiss-born, but well-traveled, General Manager, Simon Spiller.

Simon Spiller, General Manager at the Hotel Eden Roc.

The Tschuggen Collection’s emphasis on nature, wellness, the environment, and sustainability is also very apparent at the Eden Roc, which has been completely climate- neutral since 2019. This is perhaps best exemplified by the Collection’s “Moving Mountains” signature guest experience program, designed to help guests “restore vitality, reconnect with nature and celebrate joy.” The program is woven

There are even programs related to rest, created in conjunction with a leading sleep center in Lucerne.

Many guests of the Hotel Eden Roc scarcely leave the hotel, content to spend their time doing little more than sitting at the pool taking in the spectacular Lake Maggiore views, eating at the hotel’s fine restaurants, and enjoying daily spa treatments. But for those looking for more active experiences, the choices are plentiful – and I did my best to experience as many as I could during my stay. These start, of course, on the water.

The Eden Roc boasts its own marina, boat house, and even its own water sports school, allowing guests to take up water skiing, sailing, paddleboarding, and wakeboarding – all very easy to do on the normally calm and uncluttered lake (good luck doing all that on Lake Como). The hotel even owns 2 Riva boats that guests can arrange to use. And for fans of those beautiful Italian vessels, this summer offers another treat – a special Riva photo exhibition by German photographer Olaf Tamm at the hotel’s own standalone museum, Casa Epper (the former home of renowned Swiss artist Ignaz Epper, located just on the edge of the hotel grounds).

The Hotel Eden Roc owns kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, which are available for guests to use free ... [+] of charge. Those who enjoy the thrill of Lake Maggiore can choose from water skiing, wakeboarding or banana boating, with the hotel's on-site partner Asconautica.

The Moving Mountains program offered at Hotel Eden Roc offers guests activities outside of the ... [+] hotel.

The activities offered by the Eden Roc extend well beyond the lake, however, into the striking Ticino valley, where bike tours, extended hikes, golf, and even paragliding and bee hive experiences are all available (all of which can be customized for guests). These activities are overseen primarily by the hotel’s own “outdoor butler” – Cyrill – who hails from the region and brings a contagious energy and enthusiasm to his role. Cyrill refers to himself as the luckiest employee at the hotel to be doing what he does – and he may be right. A Cyrill-led hike up to the Castelliere Ruins is highly recommended for those looking for a challenging, but exhilarating experience. The views from the top were breathtaking.

The Hotel Eden Roc offers guests an opportunity to hike the mountains in Ascona.

Finally, for guests looking for a novel, but less strenuous, activity, the hotel offers the Italian game bocce at Casa Epper, including lessons for those – like myself – who are unfamiliar with the rules. Bocce is a casual, but certainly fun game, and it was a pleasure to play in such a lovely, serene setting.

Bocce Ball at Casa Epper at the Hotel Eden Roc.

For those looking for something a little different on their next European adventure, or who love the Italian lakes but have been to Lake Como one too many times, the hidden gems of Lake Maggiore and the Hotel Eden Roc just might be the perfect fit.
