Last week i visited the Leica store in Amsterdam and bought the Leica 50mm summicron F2.0 “Safari Edition”.

For long time this lens was sold out, but suddenly the got them delivered again.  Leica communicates that only 500 pieces will be made.

My question is: are they producing more lenses of this type now, or is this a part of lenses of the 500 pieces they  made? Did anybody here something about it?

If it isn’t, wouldn’t be the first time a “limited edition” became an unlimited one with Leica.

Based on the serial numbers, it will be easy to determine if a Safari Summicron comes from the first, the second or maybe even following lots. Maybe someday collectors will pay a bonus for copies of the first batch. Whether Leica will soon offer other M-lenses in Safari green, perhaps 28 and 90mm?

I found it slightly annoying that only 500 would be produced alongside 1500 cameras.  I bought one a couple of weeks after my camera purchase. If memory serves, it wasn’t hugely more expensive than a standard cron.

Along these lines, when I went to record the model number and serial number of my Safari Summicron, I found no model number!!

Is this strange, or typical?

I can't check (at work now) but I am certain my 35 'Lux (pre FLE) is model 11874, but try as I might, I cannot see that anywhere on the lens.

Model number is 11824, according to the box… but indeed looks that isn't engraved on the body  (looking at the items you can find on the net), but so is for other standard Summicron 50 v5 (no product number, but the "made in Germany" writing is different from the Safari's one)

The 50 v5 isn’t my favorite. Wish they’d had a green 28 Elmarit, with a green or silver hood

I found my serial number on the invoice. A 7 digit number, so it’s difficult to figure out the production number.

Mine has "11 824" on the box and my serial number is 04743xxx - nothing other than "MADE IN GERMANY" on the lens.   Does anyone have any idea of the original 500 serial numbers of this lens?

The R series had some green lenses. I don’t think the serial number range has been published yet. They’re probably not all released.

They probably release the lenses in limited batches, hence the stock turned from out of stock to in stock

My lens is a pretty good color match for the camera body.  Looking at it this morning, I’d say it’s as close a match as I’d expect.  My wife tells me the difference is the Safari lens has a touch of grey in the green that the body lacks.  Honestly, I can’t call it darker, it’s just different.  Subtley.

I don’t have the box; I throw all that junk away.  My serial number is 4743XXX as well.  I bought mine in April 6th in the LA Leica store.

I got lens brand spanking new from leica oslo. Open the box make sure it’s the right lens, unfortunately never tasted for its focus 

flown back home only to find its focus is misaligned and couldn’t believe myself

quite a few cm away from the designated focus  and still sitting And start to collecting dust  

frm where i live sending ‘em back for focus adjustment would take weeks and months

im looking for locals who can professionally do focus adjustments 

the question is, is it hard to do and would there be any harms should i let the experienced non leica certified service to do it?  

It’s under warranty and someone else working on it might void the warranty.

Hi james, they dont have the service center either and will eventually send ‘em over to singapore and its gonna take weeks to probably month for the delivery

hence i was actually looking for a shorter time of period to get it done

Limited to only 500 pieces worldwide, the lens pairs perfectly with all of Leica's previous "Safari" Edition M models, and the newly-announced M10-P Safari Edition. In addition to the special enamel finish, the Leica Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari’ is also distinguished by other design features. The distance scale in feet and the focal length engravings are picked out in red paint and stand in contrast to the otherwise white engravings on the lens. As the technical specifications and optical performance are identical to those of the serial production model, the lens is therefore not only an ideal complement to the olive green M-Cameras. There's nothing better

There is no better 50mm lens available for your Leica M camera. There are faster (Summilux and Noctilux), lighter (Summarit) and even higher performing (APO Summicron), but when taken as a total package (which of course includes price) then this lens really hits the sweet spot. The Summilux might be slightly sharper (might, and if so, very slightly), the APO is visibly sharper and the Summarit is lighter and cheaper, but there really is nothing that this lens doesn't do extremely well. At ... f/2 its fast enough for almost anything, and since it performs so close to its best even wide-open, there is never a need to stop down other than for increased depth of field. Some people complain about flare, but I've owned this lens for years, sold it, and just bought another and have never had an issue with flare. Yes, it will flare as all lenses will, but its no worse than the Summilux (the Summarit is actually the best at dealing with flare) and it is entirely controllable and predictable. Sharpness is impressive from corner to corner, as are contrast, color and bokeh. What can I say, I love this lens.

This was the first lens that I purchased for my Leica M8. With the 1.3 factor it's a great portrait lens. First thing I did was to purchase the Leica UVa filter for my new lens. There is no use having Leica glass and putting an inferior filter on the front of it. This is a great all around lens with a fast enough f stop for most shooting situations.

In the category of high speed standard lenses, this handy universal lens has a world-wide reputation for the highest optical performance.
