  • About Yamanashi

Home to Mt. Fuji, Yamanashi Prefecture is easily reachable from Tokyo but feels like a world away from the bustle of the capital. Besides Japan’s most sacred mountain, the nature-rich area hosts the picturesque Fuji Five Lakes, the sheltered highland resort of Kiyosato, solemn historical sites such as the Erinji and Kuonji temples, a remarkable variety of hot springs, and some of the country’s best wineries. In short, Yamanashi has everything for travelers seeking to discover a new side of Japan, uncover the true beauty of the country, and recover their sense of wellbeing in the midst of nature.

Discoveries abound in Yamanashi, which except for the surroundings of Mt. Fuji is still very much under the mass-tourism radar. Some of the area’s true gems are notably secluded, making them ideal destinations for private getaways. This section points you to essential discoveries across the region, from picturesque valleys and waterfalls to hidden art museums and prehistoric ruins.

There’s no need to dig deep to uncover the true beauty of Japan in Yamanashi: the iconic views of cherry blossoms with the snow-covered Mt. Fuji in the background or the autumn foliage sparkling in countless shades of red and yellow on the mountainsides are right there. Here you will gain new perspectives on some of Yamanashi’s most famous sights and find hints on how to uncover their secrets.

With wide open skies, gorgeous greenery, hot springs, and world-class cuisine, Yamanashi offers exhausted urbanites an opportunity to rejuvenate both the mind and the body, all while opening up new windows of inspiration. This section celebrates the healing properties of the region by highlighting the best destinations for recovering your well-being.

Fujikanko Kaihatsu Co., Ltd.

The Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station, located on the Yamanashi Prefecture side, serves as the gateway to Mount Fuji's summit. It offers an enjoyable experience not only for mountain climbers but also for tourists as a popular sightseeing spot. There are four routes to climb Mt. Fuji: the Yoshida Ascending Route on the Yamanashi Prefecture side, and the Fujinomiya, Subashiri, and Gotemba Ascending Routes on the Shizuoka Prefecture side. This time, we will introduce the highlights of "Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station" on the Yoshida Trail side, which is full of restaurants and souvenir shops and bustling with many climbers and tourists every year. You can also enjoy gourmet food unique to the 5th station and magnificent scenery such as Mt. Fuji and the sea of clouds! Please refer to it.

Additionally, at the rustic-style lodging facility "Gogoen Rest House," you can also indulge in the highly popular "Fuji Mountain Melon Bread."

Visit Mt.Fuji Komitake Shrine

fuji kanko travel

"Mt.Fuji Komitake Shrine" at the 5th station. Komitake is a mountain that became the foundation of Mt. Fuji, which appeared before the current Mt. Fuji was formed. Komitake and Old Fuji erupted repeatedly to form the current Mt. Fuji. Mt. Fuji Komitake Shrine, located at the 5th station of Mt. Fuji, was established in 937 (Johei 7) on the summit of Mt. Komitake (Mt. Fuji 5th station), a sacred place for mountain worship. As a sacred place for mountain worship, many worshipers and ascetics have visited since ancient times as a place of prayer. It seems that there are benefits such as traffic safety, matchmaking, and longevity. Let's visit when you visit the 5th station.

Hiking in Oniwa, Okuniwa, and Ochudo

fuji kanko travel

You can enjoy hiking on the trekking trail that continues from Mt. Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station to the Goten and Okunitei gardens. Along the way, in mid-June to late July, you can see rhododendrons, while in July to August, there are bearberries. During the autumn foliage season from early to late October, you can also enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji and larch trees.

In addition, there is a scenic point where you can see the top of Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanakako below. If you look up at the summit of Mt. Fuji, you can clearly see the boundary line of the forest limit.

Best time to see autumn leaves: Early to late October

"Okuniwa" where you can see the autumn leaves of Japanese larch and Mt. Fuji

fuji kanko travel

The Okuniwa, which is located 2km before the Mt. Fuji 5th station parking lot, is a must-see spot during the autumn foliage season. In about 10 minutes on foot, you will arrive at a scenic spot where you can see Mt. Fuji and the autumn leaves of Japanese larch. You can go around the whole area in about an hour and a half.

"Oniwa" where you can see Mt. Fuji towering up close

fuji kanko travel

If you go a little further from the "Okuniwa" parking lot, you will see the mountain trail leading to "Oniwa". The Oniwa has a slightly steeper uphill than the Okuniwa, so wear clothes and shoes that are easy to move in and enjoy your walk.

"Ochudo" where various alpine plants bloom

Onchudo is a promenade that runs horizontally around the 5th and 6th stations of Mt. Fuji. You can easily enjoy trekking while enjoying the rich nature of Mt.Fuji.

Mt. Fuji 5th Station Temperature & Recommended Clothing

Temperature at mt.fuji 5th station.

fuji kanko travel

The 5th station of Mt.Fuji is located at an altitude of over 2000m. Since the temperature drops by about 0.6 degrees when the altitude increases by 100m, the temperature at the fifth station is about 12 degrees lower than on the flat ground. For example, the average temperature at the 5th station in July is about 13 degrees. This is the average temperature of April in Tokyo.

The average temperature during the autumn foliage season at Mt. Fuji 5th Station, which is from early to late October, is around a high of 9°C and a low of 1.2°C. Therefore, it's important to prepare warm clothing, such as thick jackets, when visiting.

Recommended clothes

fuji kanko travel

As mentioned above, the temperature at Mt.Fuji 5th Station is quite low even in summer. Instead of light clothing such as short sleeves, take measures against the cold such as wearing a long-sleeved jacket that allows you to adjust the temperature. In addition, the 5th station, which has a high altitude, is a place “close to the sun”. The UV rays are stronger than at the foot of the mountain, so if you are concerned about it, bring sunscreen and sunglasses, and wear clothes that do not expose your skin as much as possible.

Access to Mt.Fuji 5th Station

How to get there from shinjuku by bus or car.

fuji kanko travel

To go to the 5th Station by bus from Tokyo

There are two main ways to get to Mt. Fuji 5th Station by bus from Tokyo. One way is to use the highway bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal to Mt. Fuji 5th Station. The other way is to take a train or highway bus to Kawaguchiko Sta. or Mt.Fuji Station, and then transfer to the Mt. Fuji Climbing Bus to reach the 5th Station. If you only want to visit the 5th Station of Mt. Fuji, it would be easier to use the direct bus. If there is a place you want to stop by around Lake Kawaguchiko or Fujiyoshida, change trains at the station at the foot of the mountain.

Private car/Rental car

You can also go to Mt.Fuji 5th Station by private car or rental car. However, please note that during the climbing season from mid-July to the end of August, private vehicles are restricted and private vehicles cannot pass through. Also, at the Yoshida Route 5th Station, get off the Chuo Expressway Lake Kawaguchiko IC and take the Fuji Subaru Line (charged) for about 1 hour.

The Fuji Subaru Line has set business hours and is not open 24 hours a day, so be sure to check the official website in advance.

Fuji Subaru Line: http://subaruline.jp/

Personal car regulation period

fuji kanko travel

On the Fuji Subaru Line, from mid-July to late August, when many climbers and tourists are expected to visit, private cars will be regulated to protect the environment and alleviate traffic congestion. During the period, you will not be able to drive your own car, but that doesn't mean you can't go to the 5th station. In front of the tollgate, you can park your car at "Mt.Fuji Fujisan Parking", which is located immediately after getting off at the Fujiyoshida IC on the Higashifujigoko Road, and take the shuttle bus from there to the 5th station.

Fujisan Parking: https://www.fujisanparking.jp/

Other than private car regulation period

For access other than the private car regulation period, use a "car" or "route bus".

Click here for route bus details → https://bus.fujikyu.co.jp/rosen/detail/id/14/%23d_h01

In case of bad weather or outside of business hours, it is not possible to enter or leave the "Fuji Subaru Line".
