Dwight Yoakam on His Early Cowpunk Years in Los Angeles

Dwight_Yoakam.jpg

When you think of quintessential Los Angeles musicians, few would point to country titan Dwight Yoakam. He grew up in Kentucky and Ohio, dabbled in Nashville's barrage of bar bands, then hit the road for California in 1977. He's been here ever since. With his hillbilly twang, Americana anthems, and rockabilly swagger, Yoakam sounds more at home in Texas, but Hollywood suits him well, as it is here, among the saloon-themed strip malls, ranch homes, and still-standing Western movie sets that the country dream remains.

After leaving the country music machine of Nashville, Yoakam headed west to California to stake a claim in the music of the true West, looking to Buck Owens and the Bakersfield sound, and space cowboy Gram Parsons. But it's Yoakam's early days trying to break into the business in L.A. that lit the fire that has fueled his career.

In the early 1980s, Yoakam was a frequent performer at country haunts like the San Fernando Valley's Palomino , and he also played regular gigs at the Old Corral Bar in Lakeview Terrace, a now-demolished honkytonk that was also featured in one of the opening scenes of the 1991 blockbuster, "Terminator 2: Judgement Day." (Perhaps coincidentally, Yoakam's song "Guitars, Cadillacs" was playing on the jukebox during the scene where a naked cybernetic Schwarzenegger shows up to the biker hangout.) Yoakam's amped-up barroom sound stood out against the smooth crooner sounds of the era's chart-toppers like Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson. Prominent rock acts like the Eagles had become mainstream juggernauts, which only remotely had any country flourishes. But Yoakam was different.

By the early 1980s, Yoakam found friends in an unlikely peer group: punk rockers. As a musical antipode to the big budget, arena rock largesse, punk clubs gave Yoakam a place to get gritty. "Merge Haggard said that the difference between the country music from Nashville and the country music from the West Coast was that country music in Nashville came from churches, and the country music in the West Coast came from honkytonks and bars," Yoakam says.

He was embraced by L.A.'s punk community, and in the early 1980s, he unleashed his honkytonk sound in punk clubs across the city, taking the stage at storied hotspots like Madame Wong's in Chinatown and downtown L.A.'s artist hangout, Al's bar. Performing traditional honkytonk to punk audiences was a punk move in itself, and he says friendships emerged with some of his stagemates. Punks like the crucial L.A. band X, also began to lean toward the twangy side, providing a subgenre that became known as cowpunk. X even rebranded for a while as the Knitters, with singer Exene Cervenka, guitarist John Doe, Dave Alvin of the Blasters, and Johnny Ray Bartel on upright bass. Yoakam's rowdy sound fit right in.

By 1986, Yoakam released his major label debut, "Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.," which was recorded at famed Hollywood recording studios including the historic Capitol Records. It was the breakthrough album that launched a career spanning 30 years of major country hits, and more than 25 million records sold. But his latest efforts subtly dig back into his cowpunk roots. On his 2012 album "Three Pears," which saw collaborations with Beck, he blasts through the barnburner "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke." On this year's album "Second Hand Heart," the raucous sound continues with the thick chords of a fast-paced cover of "Man of Constant Sorrow," popularized by the Coen brother's movie, "O Brother Where Art Thou" and the carefree garage rock swing of "Liar," which Yoakam says was recorded on the first take, flaws and all.

Artbound recently caught up with Yoakam on the phone as he was caught in L.A. traffic to discuss a brief history of California country and his punk roots.

On Coming to Los Angeles

I used to always say, born in Kentucky, raised in Ohio, but I grew up in California. I came out here with a buddy of mine who had been in the band I had in high school. I dropped out of Ohio State within a year and had been at Nashville for a time.

I was in Nashville, and my gaze kept shifting West. Emmylou Harris actually was a great influence on me moving to L.A., as was the connection to the previous California country music generation, like The Buckaroos and Merle Haggard, that kind of Bakersfield honkytonk sound. That intrigued me because I knew I was going to do more traditional versions of country-rock.

And Nashville, at that time, there wasn't anything really going on, live music-wise. In retrospect, now, I realize it was about the publishing. I had things there. There was a lot of songwriting, but I didn't perceive myself as someone who wrote for other people. I was writing, for myself, to perform the material. So I came West in an old Volkswagen with my buddy, my belongings, and all I had left in my young life.

Dwight_Yoakam_2

After job hunting at a loading dock and at a department store, I started playing here. And slowly, within the six years, I worked my way into going out and meeting musicians, like at the old Palomino club in the Valley. I began to form friendships with musicians, and I started drawing up a performing band together. By 1979, I had a band here in L.A. for the first time, and I moved up to Hollywood from Long Beach for the first time. I was beginning to make in-roads and working at clubs. I did a year stint at a place called the Corral -- not to be confused with the Corral that was famous in Topanga Canyon. This was a hardcore, blue-collar, hillbilly bar on the corner of Foothill up Walnut/ Angeles Crest area. Right off of little Tujunga Canyon, and Osborne, on the corner behind Hansen dam. And I played there for the better part of a year straight on the off nights of that club. And I really evolved. I was 21 or 22 when I took that job. I started doing demos after that. I worked with a fellow who was a staff engineer at what used to be United Western Studios, but which is now EastWest, one of the famous, historic studios. I was literally making demos in the same room that Brian Wilson did "Pet Sounds" in.

I eventually met Pete Anderson through another performer, and we began collaborating on live performance and he really felt strongly that he understood what I wanted to do. We were of like mind, and so we began making that first EP -- we started to do the tracks as best as we could [laying them out in terms of how my acts would fit together] for a six-song EP, and we released it in '84. And that was before Warner Bros. signed me. I was really lucky to be in the right time and the right place, to land at Warner records. And [label head] Lenny Waronker said, even though I was always selling out of the national division, I was always a child of Burbank, you know? It was shared custody, if you will. Because I live here, I came out of the clubs in L.A. And they saw that.

On Los Angeles' country roots

I had heard about the mythology of California country music. By the time I was in college, the Burrito Brothers with Chris Hillman, had his great, magical experiment with country and rock living together. That was all going on, and it led to this scene. And it had always kind of had been here: the West Coast has always had its own version of country-western music.

Merle Haggard once said to me, when we were doing an interview for the Country Music Hall of Fame, and they were doing an exhibit on Bakersfield, he said that the difference between the country music from Nashville and the country music from the West Coast was that country music in Nashville came from churches, and the country music in the West Coast came from honkytonks and bars. And it really was about that.

Every 10 years, there's a cycle, and the young rockers will rediscover their heritage, if you will: the Okies, John Steinbeck, Grapes of Wrath heritage on the West Coast -- the country music that came out of here during the end of the dustbowl and led to the Bakersfield sound -- in greater Bakersfield, actually. It's around all the San Joaquin Valley, and its labor camps. But the Bakersfield sound ironically had been recorded in Hollywood, not Bakersfield, for the most part.

So that drew me here, and that was still there. It was in an ebb moment, when I got here in 1977. But by 1978, the beginnings of it, the new births of it were happening.

On connecting to the Los Angeles music scene

I went to a show at the Whisky a Go Go and I was looking around, and [East Coast rockabilly musician] Robert Gordon was playing on tour with the new rockabilly album he had done. He was there in town that night at the Whisky with Link Wray. Billy Zoom, and his rockabilly band, [before X], opened for Robert Gordon that night. And I also ran into a gentleman at [rockabilly label] Rolling Rock Records, Ronny Weiser, he produced the Blasters's first album. But I became aware that night of this Americana music that was starting to take hold in L.A. It was the next generation of country-rock. Then there was punk morphing into new wave, coming from the U.K. There was this rock stuff coming over here with Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. There was the Pretenders and Elvis Costello. So that was something else.

With me, doing my variation of what Linda Ronstadt was doing, and what Emmylou is still doing, and where the Eagles sort of began -- I was in that state, musically.

Dwight_Yoakam_3

On the birth of cowpunk

And that gave way through the bars I was in around through 1980. In 1981-82, I realized there was this scene going on that would be called the cowpunk, for lack of a better term, because it was former punk bands like the Dils who became Rank and File; the Plugz, who became the Cruzados. Dori and the T had been high school kids who had been punkers and decided that they wanted to explore California country music, and they all loved clubs in Bakersfield. And that led to the scene that the band that Pete and I had put together in 1983.

On playing L.A. punk clubs

The cowpunk scene just would allow me to launch myself here. Our energy was very punkish. We had an affinity immediately with them as soon as the downbeat starts. If you go back, you could probably see some clips on YouTube, there are some clips of us in New York City with the Blasters, after 1985. And you'll see, that we were very raw and emotional in a very punk-like way. The form wasn't necessarily punk, and the execution musically wasn't, but the accessibility to the immediacy of the emotion -- the emotional intent was very immediately accessible to that audience.

In L.A. we played at the Club Lingerie, Club 88, The Blue Lagoon Saloon, Madame Wong's, and the Hong Kong Café down there in Chinatown. And Esther [Wong] was upset that I had played a bunch of them, but that was because she wouldn't book me! I said that I had to play in Madame Wong's West, and she would say, "No!" And I would say, "Yes, Esther, you didn't know me, you didn't book me." She didn't like what she saw, so she booked me in the Hong Kong Café. I played all over Chinatown. We played Al's bar. The same night, Los Lobos and I shared the bill -- they played in one room, and we played in the other room.

There was a moment, out here. I shared a bill with the Knitters, which was X's alter-ego with Dave Alvin on guitar, their country band, with John Doe. And so, it was a great moment of shared expression.

Michael Gilmore, the writer for Rolling Stone, on one night probably in 1985 or 1986 said, "We got to remember this night. I drove to three different night clubs in one night." He saw Los Lobos in one place, he stopped and saw The Blasters (or maybe The Knitters), out in Lancaster, then he went out to Palomino and saw me -- all in the same night. And he said, "You know, we all get to share this moment of music with each other," and I remember hearing him saying that and thinking, "Wow, he may be right, this moment might not last." And they don't -- they ebb and flow. California country music always shows up every few years, and reincarnates itself.

On how his early shows influenced his music today

I didn't really get around to doing my own version of cowpunk until the "3 Pears" album [in 2012], and I took that idea with, again, another L.A. artist, Beck, producing on the last album, who had a heart like mine. [The album] "Second Hand Heart" has a little more of a cowpunk edge to it, as does "Liar" as does "The Big Time," which really has a stomp to it. The punk feel is there, probably, in the recklessness of my own electric guitar playing, because I'm not very schooled, and I don't have very great technical acumen. There's a certain reckless aggression to it that's free in its spirit, but I have willful intent.

Dwight's show in Spartanburg SC was absolutely amazing. I saw him twice 20 years ago and both shows were awesome! Out of the 3 shows I must say this one was the best. After all these years his shows still have the same energy and great rock-a-billy his fans are accustomed to. If I didn't know better I would have thought someone sent him my playlist. The best part was that I got to share it with my wife & 2 sons. Even with the generation gap, my boys who are 20 & 17 had a great time and truly enjoyed it. If you are a fan of live music and you've never seen Dwight, do it! You won't regret it.

I’ve seen him six times in five in six different venues, twice at Viejas Casino. About three years ago or so my wife and I had front row tickets to see him at the North Park Conservatory Theatre and it was the best show of Dwights that I had ever seen.

Then came last nights show and it was simply amazing! There was a buzz in the crowd like when I recently saw The Steve Miller Band, another great show. The crowd was filled with die hard Dwight fans like me. And, everyone was expressing how good the show was. Dwight had noticeably more energy than ever and his voice was the usual....sweet music... like the first time I heard him! His show was filled with new and timeless songs and even a tribute to the great Merle.

If you’re a fan of country music it doesn’t get any more pure than this! Excellent Show!

I have attended many performances at the Crystal Grand Music Theater and have been extremely happy with the shows. This is not the case with the Dwight Yoakkam show. Dwight was who he should be. One of the great all time performs in the likes of Meryl, Waylon and others of that era. Unfortunately, the producers must have decided that the audience was deaf as they turned the amps and speakers up to unlistenable volumes. You could not hear the vocals, there was no distinction sound between the instruments and given the fast pace of the performance, one song sounded like all of the rest of the songs. Just loud, distinguishing noise coming from the stage. I will think twice about attending future concerts at the Crystal Grand if the producers continue to think that loud noise is better than music.

California Country-Rock of '60s-'80s to Get Nashville Museum Spotlight

Attention, L.A. country music fans: It may be time to charter a bus.

Come Sept. 30, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville will be opening a new exhibit, “Western Edge: The Roots and Reverberations of Los Angeles Country-Rock,” in a newly renovated, 5,000-square-foot gallery filled with artifacts, annotation and video largely collected from the scene of the crime in Cali. It covers three distinct decades in SoCal music history: the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. L.A. scenesters who remember any of these eras fondly may have their lives flashing before their eyes, and they’ll only have to book a ticket to Tennessee to do it.

There’s no huge hurry to get there; “Western Edge” will be on display at the Hall of Fame for three years. But for those who’ve hankered for decades to see this kind of historical homage come together, the opening can’t come fast enough.

“Everybody’s dealt with the first incarnation of the sound, from the Depression up through Buck and Merle,” said Dwight Yoakam , at a media event held at the Troubadour to spur west coast interest in the exhibit, “but not many have dealt with the things that came after — the things that inspired me as a teenager and in college and that drew me to the west coast. It was a beacon, that stuff.” He added, “It’s an honor to be part of this exhibit that has to do with that next stage of the Tom Joad road that led to California’s version of country music… They’re doing Ken Burns-level research.”

Popular on Variety

Sitting at the bar of the Troubadour, on a seat he no doubt sat on almost 60 years ago, country-rock pioneer Chris Hillman shared his excitement for the exhibit with Variety . He sat in that same spot at the beginning of 2020, just before the start of the pandemic, to do a lengthy interview that will be excerpted in video stations and on the museum’s website. He also donated the 1958 Martin D28 guitar that he learned to play on, and “I think one of my (Nudie’s) suits is down there,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing it in its entirety when it’s done,” said Hillman, who made both country and rock history as a member of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers and Desert Rose Band. “Honestly, I didn’t know it was gonna be this big or what an event it has become and will become. Now I’m taking it seriously. It’s gonna be really interesting because you start thinking about it and dig deeper into the whole concept of all these different players filtering in, right through this bar, where everybody was interacting with each other, and not in a competitive way — sharing ideas or writing songs together. At the time, you take a lot of it for granted.”

Perhaps the most surprising thing about “Western Edge” is that it doesn’t stop with the ’60s and ’70s framing of country-rock, from the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers to Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles, but continues into the country-punk era — a time that may seem way too fresh, to those who were part of it, to be celebrated in a museum. (Do the math, cowpunks.)

Let Michael McCall, a former music journalist who is now the Hall of Fame’s senior editor, take you through some of what he’s made multiple trips from Nashville to L.A. to work on, including dozens of hours of video interviews:

“The ’80s people were all great great. Dwight is doing the opening narration for an introduction to the exhibit, and we did more than two hours of interview with him,” McCall says. “Los Lobos has been outstanding; Louis Perez was the interview, but we got instruments from all of ’em — and Cesar (Rosas)’s Ray-Bans! Dave Alvin was one of my best interviews; he just so articulate, the way he talked about the whole scene. Lucinda Williams, even after her stroke, Lucinda came in and talked for about an hour, and was great; her Rough trade album is the only one that kind of falls in that (’80s) period. Rosie Flores was great. Alejandro (Escovedo), we’re still going to talk to about Rank & File.”

That’s not all, Palomino-heads. “With Lone Justice, we met with Ryan Hedgecock and Marvin Etzioni, and Ryan in particular had like 20 manuscripts and 20 or 30 set lists that they wrote by hand from the early days… and the first flier, when they were opening for Rank and File and they went around the Universal Amphitheatre at a Blasters show and put them on everybody’s car windshields. And Maria McKee was an outstanding, outstanding interview — one of my favorites, really colorful. She dressed up in what she called her ‘Loretta Lynn gown’ —  a floor-length, multicolored, Southern ball gown. She looked more like Scarlet O’Hara, almost. She was so passionate and gave so many good stories. I didn’t know she been a street performer with her brother (Love’s Bryan MacLean) singing gospel songs at 16, for instance, and that was part of why she learned to project.”

This is not to slight the even more pioneering types who invented country-rock in the two decades prior to that. Some of the interviewees and donators from the first flowerings of the hybrid included Emmylou Harris and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Jeff Hanna, who performed together at an event in Nashville to announce the exhibit, just as Hillman and Yoakam were doing the same in L.A. Bernie Leadon of the Eagles was one of McCall’s first interviews for the project, which will also cover artists as disparate but similarly ground-breaking as the Dillards, Poco, the International Submarine Band, the early ’60s L.A. bluegrass band the Kentucky Colonels, and, of course, two of the real pioneers in marrying pop and twang, Ricky Nelson and the Monkees’ Michael Nesmith.

(All of this will come together not just in the Nashville museum space but via an accompanying book that Angelenos won’t necessarily even have to travel 2,000 miles to pick up. The companion volume has been penned by Randy Lewis, who covered the L.A. music scene for decades before retiring from the Los Angeles Times.)

Yoakam is perfectly happy the exhibit has landed in Nashville, given his high regard for the host museum. “The Country Hall of Fame is the best thing about Nashville,” he said. “The Country Music Hall of Hame is what should be the template for any musical hall of fame, anywhere,” the singer added, perhaps throwing a bit of shade elsewhere, for “the amount of reverence that they show toward the foundational creators of the genre and all those that have come after.”

Said Hillman, “That bar in the Troubadour, more music came through that door into this room – Joni Mitchell and Elton John, and the Byrds played here one night when we started out, and the Flying Burrito Brothers played here. It was so interconnected, and as (Yoakam) well put it for many years, the edge of the continent. It was the Tom Joad road, and everybody comes out, be they musicians or actors or writers or artists, and you stop there at the Pacific Ocean and that’s it. … You have to do it or swim!”

Although Yoakam never adopted quite Hillman’s or Gram Parsons’ level of flashy Western-wear, he said it was inspiring to him as a kid to see, and the sounds went deep into his soul.

“The Burrito Brothers were the most famous band that a lot of people never actually heard the records of,” Yoakam said, “but I knew … those long-haired hippie cowboys from the Sunset Strip that had on those Nudie’s suits. And it fascinated me when I was in junior high and high school, (as) a hillbilly kid from Kentucky who moved to Ohio and felt kind of like a fish out of water in the music that I listened to.”

Hillman did his interview for the exhibit in the Troubadour bar long ago enough now — two and a half years — that asking him about it is kind of like asking for a recollection of a recollection. But “I have a good memory, I must say,” says Hillman (who published a memoir a few years ago, “Time Between,” named after a Byrds song that Yoakam considers one of the first real country-rock tunes).

“And I never go into dark areas or negative things. It’s no point in doing that. I remember it all, and I remember all good things. It was exciting, and it was just so artistically free — and the music business, as you know, was a whole different animal then. You really got signed to a label, but they’d stick with you. If you didn’t sell platinum off the first release, they didn’t throw you in the street, they would stick with you and nurture you, in those days, the early and mid-60s.”

The opening weekend for the exhibit will include two concerts at the CMA Theater. On Sept. 30, the all-star lineup for for the first show will include Hillman, Dave Alvin, Alison Brown (paying tribute to California bluegrass), Rodney Dillard, Rosie Flores, Richie Furay, Jeff Hanna, Bernie Leadon, John McEuen, Wendy Moten (paying tribute to Ronstadt) and Herb Pedersen.

The other show that weekend, on Oct. 2, will consist entirely of a reunion performance by the Desert Rose Band, the group that Hillman, Pedersen and John Jorgenson formed in 1988 that found mainstream country success. Nearly the entire original lineup will be on board, save for the late bassist Bill Bryson.

Hillman tells Variety that, as much as he’s looking forward to it, this Oct. 2 will be a one-and-done reunion for the Desert Rose Band.

“That’ll be good because we all remained friends — you know, an oddity in the music business,” Hillman says. “Usually groups break up and never speak to each other, and we all have remained friends beyond the group’s heyday, and we’ve all worked together beyond the group’s heyday. So getting back together is real nice. We did one huge festival in Norway, which was about 10 years ago, and that was it. And after this show on Oct. 2, that’s it. I’m done. Basically I’m retired. I don’t tour anymore.”

No more solo shows, either? “Nah. Well,” he allows, “you never know that. But the Desert Rose Band is going to retire. I rarely go backwards, and I have for this band a few times. But it was a great band — really good players, and our live performances were in the 90th percentile as far as professionalism. So I always fondly remember that. But the other groups, I never went backwards with them. And sometimes it’s impossible because you’ve lost people over the years.”

Hillman hasn’t been wholly doctrinaire about resisting reunions; there was that brilliant “Sweethearts of the Rodeo” tour in 2018, although maybe it helped that it wasn’t billed as the Byrds. “I loved that so much,” Hillman concedes, calling it “one of the best, if not the best, tour I’ve ever gone on. Marty Stuart and the Superlatives (the backing band) were just wonderful, and working with Roger McGuinn again after 25 years, it was like no time had passed. That first night we played in downtown L.A. at the Ace, when Roger hit that first note on ‘My Back Pages,’ it just fell in place. Wonderful tour.”

Once you get him going, even as professed a non-backwards-looker as Hillman has to admit: “Sin City” is a hell of a place to revisit.

Dwight Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, and he is a 21-time nominated, multiple GRAMMY® Award winner. He has 12 gold albums and 9 platinum or multi-platinum albums, with five of those albums topping Billboard’ s Country Albums chart and another 14 landing in the Top 10. Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted on Billboard , with 14 peaking in the Top 10. Yoakam is a recipient of the Artist of the Year award from the Americana Music Association, and BMI Country Music’s President’s Award, the most prestigious award offered by the organizations. He was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in the Songwriter/Artist category at the 49th anniversary Gala in 2019 in Nashville, TN.

Yoakam’s self-curated SiriusXM channel, titled Dwight Yoakam and The Bakersfield Beat ‘Where Country Went Mod’ launched in April of 2018. The channel celebrates the Bakersfield sound and those whom it has inspired. Guests have boasted the likes of Post Malone, Lukas Nelson, Beck, Chris Hillman, Jakob Dylan, Mike Nesmith and Mickey Dolans, Dave Alvin, and Jackie DeShannon, among others.

In 2016, Yoakam released his bluegrass album Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars … on Sugar Hill Records. Featuring a band of bluegrass luminaries, this album boasts a collection of reinterpreted favorites from his catalogue, as well as a cover of Prince’s Purple Rain . Produced by nine-time GRAMMY® winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton), Jon Randall (songwriter of Whiskey Lullaby ), and Yoakam himself, and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge, this album reflects the love for bluegrass music that Yoakam developed at an early age in Kentucky and that has inspired him for many years thereafter. In 2018, Yoakam released two songs, Pretty Horses and Then Came Monday (the latter written with Chris Stapleton).

In addition to his musical career, Yoakam is a formidable film and television actor who has appeared in over 40 feature films, including Sling Blade and Panic Room . In 2016, he recurred in David E. Kelley’s Amazon series Goliath . Recently, he appeared in director Steven Soderbergh’s film Logan Lucky with Channing Tatum and Daniel Craig. Yoakam is capable of seamlessly melting into his roles and impressively standing toe-to-toe with some of the world’s top thespians over the course of his storied and successful acting career, including Jodie Foster, Tommy Lee Jones, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker and Matthew McConaughey.

Tapped by  Garden & Gun  as an artist  “shaping up to be one of country music’s most prolific torchbearers,” a “must-see live performer”  by  Rolling Stone,  and a “force to be reckoned with” by CMT, Charley Crockett crafts his singular “Gulf & Western” sound — described as “very 21st century and very vintage” by NPR Music — by synthesizing country, blues, soul, Cajun, R&B and other pieces of American Roots music. And when his voice comes out of your speakers, there is no confusing him for any other artist. As the Wall Street Journal writes, “Mr. Crockett’s unique vocal style is one third Ernest Tubb honky-tonk with clipped-word diction, one third Bill Withers low-key, soulful crooning, and one third jazzy French Quarter second-line swagger.”

Crockett’s album The Man From Waco , released in fall of 2022 via Son of Davy/Thirty Tigers, was #1 for 10 weeks on the Americana Albums chart, reached over 18M streams, and notched the #2 spot on  Rolling Stone’s  Best Country and Americana Albums of 2022. His song I’m Just A Clown from the same album was Top 10 on the Mediabase AAA chart for 5 weeks and spent 12 weeks at #1 on the Americana Singles chart.

Born and raised a farmer’s daughter from California, Rolling Stone praised Annie Bosko as the country artist to watch. Heavily influenced by classic country and The Beatles, at a young age Annie began singing at a local church and family functions. Her God-given vocal ability, relentless passion and hard work has led to sharing the stage with Adele, Andrea Bocelli, Darius Rucker and more as well as writing songs for Willie Nelson and Jessica Simpson. Annie is getting ready to release new music featuring collaborations with her musical heroes Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill, and Raul Malo of the Mavericks.

David Bowie — Waiting in the Sky (Before The Starman Came To Earth

British glam rocker David Bowie was a starman and an icon. Throughout his career, he won five GRAMMY Awards and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.

On RSD 2024, Bowie's estate is dialing it back to his Ziggy Stardust days to make Waiting in the Sky (Before The Starman Came To Earth) available for the first time. The record features recordings of Bowie's sessions at Trident Studios in 1971, and many songs from those sessions would be polished for his 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars .

The tracklisting for Waiting in the Sky differs from Ziggy Stardust and features four songs that didn’t make the final album.

Talking Heads — Live at WCOZ 77

New York City-based outfit Talking Heads defined the sound of new wave in the late '70s and into the next decade. For their massive influence, the group received two GRAMMY nominations and was later honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

While promoting their debut album Talking Heads: 77 , the quartet recorded a live performance for the New Albany, Pennsylvania radio station WCOZ in 1977. The Live at WCOZ 77 LP will include 14 songs from that performance at Northern Studios, including seven that will be released for the first time. Among the previously unheard cuts are " Love Goes To A Building On Fire" and "Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town." During that session, Talking Heads also performed songs like "Psycho Killer" and "Pulled Up."

The Doors — Live at Konserthuset, Stockholm, September 20, 1968

The Doors were at the forefront of the psychedelic rock movement of the 1960s and early '70s. One of Jim Morrison 's most epic performances with the band will be available on vinyl for the first time.

Live at Konserthuset, Stockholm, September 20, 1968 includes recordings from a radio broadcast that was never commercially released. The 3-LP release includes performances of songs from the Doors’ first three albums, including 1967’s self-titled and Strange Days . In addition to performing their classics like "Light My Fire" and "You're Lost Little Girl," the Doors and Morrison also covered "Mack the Knife" and Barret Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)" live during this session.

Beatlemania swept across the U.S. following the Beatles’ first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in February 1964, setting the stage for the British Invasion. The box set will include a Beatles-styled turntable and four 3-inch records. Among those records are the hits "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "Till There Was You," "She Loves You," and "I Saw Her Standing There," which the Beatles performed on Sullivan's TV across several appearances.

Danny Ocean — 54+1

Venezuelan reggaeton star Danny Ocean broke through on a global level in 2016 with his self-produced debut single "Me Rehúso," a heartbreaking track inspired by Ocean fleeing Venezuela due to the country's economic instability and the lover he had left behind.

With "Me Rehúso," Ocean became the first solo Latin artist to surpass one billion streams on Spotify, on the platform with a single song. "Me Rehúso" was included on his 2019 debut album 54+1 , which will be released on vinyl for the first time for Record Store Day.

Lee "Scratch" Perry & The Upsetters — Skanking With The Upsetter

Jamaican producer Lee "Scratch" Perry pioneered dub music in the 1960s and '70s. Perry received five GRAMMY nominations in his lifetime, including winning Best Reggae Album in 2003 for Jamaican E.T.

To celebrate the legacy of Perry's earliest dub recordings, a limited edition run of his 2004 album Skanking With The Upsetter will be released on Record Store Day. Notorious B.I.G. — Ready To Die: The Instrumentals

During his lifetime, the Notorious B.I.G. dropped his 1994 debut album Ready to Die , which is widely considered to be one of the greatest hip-hop releases of all-time. In honor of the 30th anniversary of the album (originally released in September '94), his estate will release Ready To Die: The Instrumentals . The limited edition vinyl will include select cuts from the LP like his hits "Big Poppa," "One More Chance/Stay With Me," and "Juicy." The album helped him garner his first GRAMMY nomination in 1996 for Best Rap Solo Performance. The Notorious B.I.G. received an additional three nominations after his death in 1998.

After rolling deep up to her desert set on a fleet of motorcycles for her Friday performance, Lana Del Rey infused her iconic sad-girl pop persona into every facet of her Gatsby-esque performance.  Her headlining set also included some special GRAMMY-winning guests: Jon Batiste and 2024 Producer Of The Year Jack Antonoff both accompanied on piano, while Billie Eilish joined her idol on stage for duet performances of "Ocean Eyes" and "Video Games." Sharing a moment with her hero on stage at the end of the set, Eilish declared, "This is the reason for half you bitches’ existence, including mine.”

Saturday's main stage event kicked off with a ruckus 80-minute set by creative magnet Tyler, The Creator , who transformed the stage into an ever-changing desert scene to host fellow performers.

First up, Childish Gambino hit the stage to perform a duet of "Running Out of Time," before A$AP Rocky joined for a performance of two tracks, "Potato Salad" and "Who Dat Boy."

Tyler admitted he once saw both as rivals, but now considers them friends. Kali Uchis also returned to the desert stage with Tyler for a quick appearance as well as legendary singer/songwriter Charlie Wilson , who made an unexpected appearance to accompany Tyler on a laid-back version of "EARFQUAKE."

Ice Spice Previewed A New Song Onstage Something’s stirring in Ice Spiceworld. At Coachella, she wowed with her live debut of a new song that sampled Sean Paul ’s 2005 track “Gimme the Light.” (She closed out with “Think U the Shit (Fart).”) As reported earlier in April , Ice Spice is going to make her acting debut in Spike Lee ’s new movie High and Low , starring Denzel Washington .  Peso Pluma Made His Coachella Debut ¡Corridos tumbados de por vida! Enter four-time GRAMMY nominee Lil Uzi Vert, who performed a hypnotic and — again — unnamed track, one that seemed to be tailor-made for Coachella. A Mini-Fugees Reunion Went Down (Thanks To YG Marley) Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean are no strangers to reigniting the Fugees spirit onstage — they did so at Essence Fest 2022, while GRAMMY.com was reporting on site . This time, they kept it in the family; during Hill’s son YG Marley’s set, both Fugees came out, playing classics like “Killing Me Softly.” (The embattled Pras wasn’t present.) Sublime Made Their Coachella Debut With Jakob Nowell

As you may have read , Sublime are back, against the odds — not with Rome, but with Jakob Nowell , original Sublime frontman Bradley’s son. (It must be said: Bradley died at 28, ending the band’s original run; as he takes the guitar and mic, Jakob himself is 28.)

Speaking of the guitar — he wielded his old man’s, in an emotional and electrifying set that proved these songs’ durability and beyond.

Sky Ferreira Made A Surprise Appearance With Kevin Abstract

If Sky Ferreira seems like an unlikely candidate to belt out a Lady A hit, think again. The singer/songwriter brought newfound heft to the five-time GRAMMY winners’ classic hit, “Need You Now,” with Kevin Abstract.

Does this foreshadow a reappraisal of the country mainstays’ catalog? Once the dust settles re: the ska revival, we’ll have that conversation.

Kesha Showed Up To Rock With Reneé Rapp (And Diss A Certain Disgraced Rapper)

.body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } “Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy ,” Kesha once rapped, in her inescapable 2009 hit “Tik Tok.” Well, that didn’t age well, and Kesha knew that. So she changed “P. Diddy” to “me” — and if that’s just going to be the official lyric now, that’s fine by the music industry. Reneé Rapp, of Mean Girls fame , bolstered her. Mac DeMarco Joined Forces With Lil Yachty Mac DeMarco’s been a savvy chameleon at this stage in his career, prioritizing brainy collaborations over typical album release cycles. He has two songwriting credits on Yachty ’s game changing 2023 album Let’s Start Here , and during Yachty’s performance, he showed up to perform two of his song songs: “On The Level,” from 2017’s This Old Dog , and “Chamber of Reflection,” from his decade-old album Salad Days . Kelly Nguyen | GRAMMYs / Apr 13, 2024 - 12:35 am .body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } On the first Saturday of Coachella, No Doubt made a striking comeback on the festival's main stage for their first performance together in nine years.  Originating from Anaheim, California in 1986, the band is celebrated for their eclectic sound that defies easy categorization — from the ska-punk vibrancy of their early days to the polished pop anthems that later defined their career.  Their big breakthrough album, Tragic Kingdom, was released in 1995 and propelled them to fame with hits like "Don't Speak" and "Just a Girl," which dominated the Billboard charts for 16 weeks.  Featuring all original members — Gwen Stefani , guitarist Tom Dumont , bassist Tony Kanal , and drummer Adrian Young — No Doubt's Coachella performance was a tribute to their iconic past and a reminder of their beloved eccentricity.  The standout set was filled with unbeatable stage presence, surprise guests, and showcased the band's timeless appeal nearly four decades into their career. Known for blending introspective brooding with a uniquely sardonic edge, the band has significantly influenced a generation of complex female artistry. Highlights from the performance, including Stefani's magnetic stage presence, heartfelt interactions with fans, and a surprise appearance by Olivia Rodrigo , underscore their palpable appeal and lasting influence on contemporary music.  Read on to discover five key highlights from their hotly anticipated return at Coachella during their 'Weekend 1' set: Gen Z And OG Fans United As One As fans converged on Coachella's main stage for No Doubt's set, the diversity of the audience was immediately apparent. Younger fans, clad in social media-ready outfits inspired by Gwen Stefani’s iconic style (some even recreating her most iconic looks) braved the evening's brisk winds.  Despite challenges, the alleged bad modern concert etiquette was not apparent, especially after Stefani's call for a return to old-school concert vibes before performing a “Simple Kind of Life.”  “Let’s do this old school!” Stefani said as she confessed missing the days when fans would belt out all the lyrics at the top of their lungs without much care in the world. It was a sentiment that quickly resonated through the audience and a moment that not only bridged generational divides but also highlighted No Doubt's broad and enduring appeal.  The Night Was Full Of Nostalgia Outside of the fact that frontwoman Stefani is allergic to aging, for a group returning after nine years performing together, No Doubt’s stage presence was just as powerful as their past, dynamic performances.   “There’s no f—king comparison!” Gwen Stefani roared during “Underneath it All,” capturing the intensity of the moment as she dropped to her knees, rhinestones sparkling on her eyebrows and a smile breaking through.  Read more: GRAMMY Rewind: Watch No Doubt Accept Their GRAMMY Award For “Underneath It All” In 2004 The band's passion burned just as brightly when they were playing local college gigs in Orange County. There was no sign of awkwardness or a single misstep as Stefani showcased the same brilliance of her early days as a burgeoning musician. She shared the spotlight seamlessly. As Dumont delivered a guitar solo during “Different People,” Stefani playfully skipped and ran across the expansive stage, never missing a note.  No Doubt has always transcended nostalgia, yet they embraced their history at Coachella. Stefani dressed to the nines in a plaid, avant-garde outfit while background videos played personal and rehearsal footage from the '90s, evoking a simpler time for the group. Stefani appeared barefaced in a plain white tee, bouncing around a beat up truck in a video that explained the band's origins and showed the magnetic charisma that manifested a star turned supernova. Olivia Rodrigo Made A Surprise Appearance Right before Stefani took a brief water break, she flashed a mysterious smirk to the crowd.  As the introspective track “Bathwater” thrummed to life, a brunette donning a glittering “I [love] ND” tank top emerged, her face turned from the audience. The murmurs quickly escalated into screams, particularly from the younger fans, signaling the arrival of pop starlet Olivia Rodrigo. Matching Stefani in energy and presence, Rodrigo proved a formidable presence on stage, trading verses and singing in duet through the chorus, their performance culminating in a sweet embrace.  No Doubt’s influence on Rodrigo's music is palpable. After all, tracks like Rodrigo’s “Get Him Back!” and No Doubt’s “Bathwater” are cut from the same mascara-stained cloth — each with a poetic, vengeful twist. They were just girls! Living in captivity! The revenge? Being able to put into song the diabolical conditions of womanhood, while allowing themselves to truly feel — whether it be anger, delusion, or plain pettiness.  The Band Members Have A Bond No Doubt’s historic return to the stage elevated the entirety of the Coachella-going experience, setting a standard and outshining the majority of the other acts. Throughout their performance, the admiration they had for one another became increasingly evident.  From Stefani frequently calling out “Tony! Tony!” to (Tony) Kanal during the set’s adlibs to the end of their set when the group remained locked in a hug for several moments, the group was clearly overjoyed to be back together again. Before exiting the stage, Stefani leaped onto the back of Young while she excitedly kicked her feet, as though in protest of having to leave.  A Coachella backstage supervisor working onsite during their rehearsals candidly confessed that he was taken by the band's natural chemistry. During soundcheck, he stated they were so intrinsically confident and overjoyed about their performance it seemed as though they had never stopped performing with one another.  They Showed Deep Gratitude For Their Fans There was nothing but gratitude on display from each and every member during the festival set. After almost every other song Stefani would belt an “I love you!” to the crowd.  During an experimental instrumental-only tribute to ska-pop, Kanal ran across the stage with a huge smile, at-the-ready to riff back-to-back with members of the group.  “Indio, put your f—king hands up!” Stefani commanded the crowd as they gleefully complied. Then, as smoke filled the air under the brilliantly shining crescent moon, she celebrated the group coming together for the first time in nine years.  “Isn’t this so crazy?” Stefani yelped during her performance for “It’s My Life.” “This is our life! Singing I love you!”  It was an epic return for No Doubt as a band and Stefani as their fierce leader, showing up to Coachella naturally, just a girl . A girl who loves to sing, rile up the audience in a fierce sing-along, and remind everyone that self-acceptance is all their music has ever been about.  10 Must-See Artists At Coachella 2024: Skepta, The Last Dinner Party, Mdou Moctar, Cimafunk & More Read More Olivia Rodrigo performs onstage for the kick off of GUTS World Tour on Feb. 23, 2024 in Palm Springs, California. .body-text { max-width: inherit; } .body-text strong > a { font-weight: 600; } Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Acrisure Arena Facebook Twitter E-mail news Olivia Rodrigo Releases 'Guts (Spilled)' Deluxe Edition: Listen To New Song "So American" & Watch The "Obsessed" Music Video Facebook Twitter Email In the midst of her headlining arena tour, Olivia Rodrigo delivered an extended version of her second album, 'GUTS.' And with a sold-out arena tour underway, the three-time GRAMMY winner is keeping that momentum going in awe-inspiring fashion. As the GUTS World Tour — Rodrigo's first headlining arena trek — kicked off at Palm Springs' Acrisure Arena on Feb. 23, the pop star immersed fans with a dedicated space to examine the moments when you feel unpretty, never have the perfect perfume, or can't help being unapologetically feral. Blooming under a full, Pisces moon, Olivia Rodrigo's luminous performance marked an undiluted moment of self-expression.  Toeing the line between fragile girlhood and brutal adulthood, Rodrigo was unafraid to embrace the Olivia who once was and who is becoming. And as a result, she unleashed a fresh, freer side of herself — one she's ready to share with the world. She's Unafraid To Celebrate Herself

What makes Rodrigo's GUTS Tour magnificent is it's less about the finer details — like massive sets or onstage collaborations — and more so about her journey since her rise to fame. Rodrigo's honest examination of herself was refreshingly lethal in the zeitgeist of pop music's increasingly formulaic state. In 90 minutes, the show's comparably straightforward set list made sure the album's focus on autonomy was central, woven with her simultaneously intimate and acute insights.

At the start of the show, the backdrop displayed perfectly arranged lit candles spelling out her album's title. Before singing "teenage dream," she proclaimed, "I just turned 21!" (her birthday was Feb. 20). "I'm really f—cking excited about it. I went to the gas station the other day and bought a pack of cigarettes!" As she fervently played the piano, she reminisced about writing the song, noting that she penned it ahead of her last birthday as a teenager, "when I was really afraid of growing up," she admitted to the crowd.

All throughout her melodic existential crisis, a video of her younger self was projected onto the screen. She ended the song with an audio of herself as a child, someone off camera asking her to introduce herself; it was so emblematic of the blitheness youth often brings. And though she recently celebrated a young adult milestone, it was still rather jarring to hear her youthful voice deliver the track's heavy lyrics.

The next two songs served up a mix of painful vulnerability and complete release. Some of the most painful sentiments of GUTS ' "pretty isn't pretty" — "I started to skip lunch, stopped eating cake on birthdays," for one — were the lines the audience most enthusiastically sang along to. After hefty musings, it made perfect sense for her to transition to "love is embarrassing," where she allowed herself to let loose. Prancing around on stage, she held up a big "L" to her forehead before laughing and stomping out flailing choreography. The track ended with all of her backup dancers bent over, shimmying their derrieres as Rodrigo sent a shimmering wink to showgoers.

Rodrigo allowed seriousness and silliness to exist simultaneously, and it was clear that every single person in the crowd felt heard. It made the night all the more special, knowing even a star whose impact is nearly immeasurable can also "feel like s—" on their birthday — and it was entirely ok .

She's Signaling Her Evolution While Honoring Her Past

Fans who have known Rodrigo since her starring role in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark have met many iterations of Olivia Rodrigo: The one who made palatable Disney Channel music, the one breaking ground with her sound, the one unafraid to embrace her pop-punk propensity. The show underscored her evolution as an artist, while being unafraid to make references to her past.

She unabashedly looked back to past Olivia in a quietly powerful performance of "All I Want," a track she wrote when starring on Disney+'s "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series." Despite the glamour of her propelling fame, Rodrigo absolutely refused to be anybody but herself throughout her time on the show. "I was literally peeing my pants on the set" while demonstrating her lyrics to the showrunners, she professes, laughing and shaking her head as she sat on the ground, with nothing but a guitar player backing her silken vocals.

It was a decidedly striking move to reference her squeakier past in a more simplistic form — especially because, as the concert progressed, her performance only became more and more complex and risqué. In a daring act, the dazzling purple backdrop ignited as fallen candles virtually burned everything in sight and, through the ashes, emerged something a bit darker. Now clad in a bold, red jumpsuit, Rodrigo delivered the GUTS hidden track "obsessed" while balanced on top of a glass floor, thrusting her hips into the air and screaming into the backdrop.

Though her vocal delivery was nearly identical to the studio versions of her songs, what made the show all the more mesmerizing was how deeply she felt each and every one of her lines. Even more so than her vulnerability, the fury Rodrigo fully embraced throughout the show was perhaps one of the most freeing aspects of it.

Snatching her purple guitar with unhindered passion, she whipped her hair and fell to the floor while thrumming along to "brutal," to match her guitarist beat-for-beat in intensity. In another audacious move, Rodrigo even grabbed a drumstick out of her drummer's hand and began whacking the drums as well, throwing the stick into the air after the final beat.

During an almost-required lyric change on "all american b—," she sang she's grabbing her "all-American tits" rather than just her "all-American hips," — which, of course, necessitated an aggressive chest clench. In one of the most memorable moments of the night, Rodrigo asked the crowd to think of someone who "really pisses them off" and commanded everyone to scream as loud as they could. Shutting off the lights, the arena was filled with nothing but raw yodels and screams into the void — and it was glorious.

As the stakes have gradually become higher and higher, Rodrigo's performances came down to something easily decipherable: shameless joy with a side of defiance.

Chappell Roan at the 2024 GUTS World Tour

* Chappell Roan at the opening night of the GUTS World Tour on Feb. 23 | Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Acrisure Arena *

She's Highlighting Diverse Talent Front & Center

Rodrigo's choice of supporting acts further display her understanding of dynamic artistry, as buzzing pop and indie acts Chappell Roan , The Breeders, PinkPantheress and Remi Wolf will rotate through the opening slot. Roan is support for the first stretch, and her set underscored the meaning of a true pop princess in the making.

Delivering flawless vocals and addicting charisma, Roan proved she knows how to serve a memorable performance. As she skipped through the stage and clutched her guitarist while hitting an immaculate high note during "My Kink Is Karma," it was clear that Roan is ready for her arrival as pop royalty.

Nothing about her performance screamed rookie; if anything, it was a masterclass in how to take up space. When she belted, "Oh mama, I'm just having fun on the stage in my heels. It's where I belong!" from the outstanding single "Pink Pony Club," she jumped into the air, pure bliss emanating all the way from head to her sparkly, silver boot-clad toes.

Her Community Of Fans Is Unmatched — And She's Here For It

Despite what was going on onstage, Rodrigo's show made it clear that her authenticity has helped her build quite the loyal following. Along with scream-singing the majority of the set list, fans were dressed to the nines, some adorning elaborate recreations of her music video and performance outfits.

Her fellow Pisces were celebrating their birthdays, wearing Olivia Rodrigo-themed sashes — some turning 13, some 30. All around the arena, fans ran up to one another wishing each other happy birthdays, asking how the other made a certain outfit. Bows, à la Sandy Liang, were sprinkled throughout the crowd, and even became an integral part of Rodrigo's choreography during "lacy."

At the surface, it's easy to dismiss Rodrigo's fandom — especially given her more sanitized, mainstream roots in the industry. Navigating through the crowd, you would hear disgruntled murmurs from security staff, dismissing everyone as just "an annoying group of 14 year old girls" — despite the diversity the audience actually boasted.

Despite it all, Rodrigo became a beacon of acceptance. Suspended above the audience on a crescent moon during GUTS ' "logical" and SOUR 's "enough for you" — one of the more poignant moments of the show — she took the time to shout out and get closer to those in the nosebleed sections. "I see you!" she belted out, later taking the time to shine the camera on cute couples and exquisite ensembles during her set. Those three words are precisely why Rodrigo's music has such wide appeal — she speaks to those who have felt easily discarded, like they were too much, too loud, too brash.

The night ended with star-shaped confetti floating down to the crowd after a buoyant performance of "get him back!" As the clean-up crew unleashed industrial sized vacuums on the streamers, young fans scrambled about, giggling as they tried to grab as many as possible to bring home, some sticking them in their hair as they leapt about the emptying arena.

Olivia Rodrigo's superpower is her acute ability to make these painful feelings of girlhood feel so uniting. In between the heartbreak and growing pains is this ephemeral moment of unguarded joy, and she brought it all to the GUTS World Tour.
