How to Travel from Delhi to Agra by Train, Bus, and Car

delhi to agra travel options

On the banks of the Yamuna River and 130 miles south of New Delhi sits Agra , a city known for its architectural marvels and Mughal history. It's one of the stops on India's tourist circuit known as the "Golden Triangle"—along with the neighboring cities Delhi and Jaipur—and while it has a number of incredible sites worth visiting, most tourists are here for one reason: the Taj Mahal . This celebrated mausoleum is recognized around the globe and has been deemed one of the Seven New Wonders of the World and called "the jewel of Muslim art in India" by UNESCO.

Transportation around India may seem daunting, but an excellent rail service with a reserved ticketing system makes it easy. The train is fast enough that if you plan out your roundtrip ticket, you could visit Agra for a day and be back in New Delhi by the evening. Buses are the cheapest option, but the trip takes significantly longer and the price difference is minimal. Travelers looking for the most hassle-free option can hire a private car or taxi, which can take anywhere from three to five hours depending on traffic.

How to Get from Delhi to Agra

  • Train: 2 hours, from $5
  • Bus: 4 hours, from $5
  • Car: 3 hours, 132 miles (213 kilometers)

The most popular way of getting from Delhi to Agra is by train. It's possible to visit the Taj Mahal in a day from Delhi if you catch the right trains, the fastest of which get you from city to city in two hours. The main railway station in Delhi is New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), near Paharganj , although some trains to Agra also depart Delhi from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (NZM), which is about 20 minutes south of NDLS. The main railway station in Agra is Agra Cantonment (AGC), which is about a 20-minute drive from the Taj Mahal. Upon exiting the train station, use one of the prepaid taxi or rickshaw booths to pay a set price for the trip.

While the train ride itself is comfortable and quick, the process of buying your train tickets isn't always so easy. You can buy tickets on the official website for  Indian Railways , but it requires signing up for an account and paying a small registration fee. Other travel websites are more user-friendly— such as Cleartrip.com , Makemytrip.com , and  Yatra.com —but don't always show all available trains and they charge a commission fee.

Tickets can also be purchased in person at the International Tourist Bureau at the New Delhi Railway Station. It's located upstairs in the main building (Paharganj side) and is open 24 hours. Don't believe anyone who tells you that it has moved or is closed because they are trying to scam you . If you are already in Delhi and need tickets, visiting the International Tourist Bureau may be the simplest method for making your train reservation. However, Indian Railways carries millions of passengers every day and trains often book up, so get your tickets in advance if possible.

There are several trains throughout the day from Delhi to Agra, but some of the most popular ones for Taj Mahal visitors are:

  • The fastest morning train from Delhi to Agra is the non-stop 12050 Gatimaan Express . It travels at a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour, and takes approximately 100 minutes to reach Agra. The train departs Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station at 8:10 a.m. and arrives in Agra at 9:50 a.m. The fare in 1AC executive class (first class, seated, air-conditioned) is 1,495 rupees, or about $20, while CC (chair car, seated, air-conditioned) costs 750–1,000 rupees, or $10–$14, with the fare based on dynamic pricing according to demand. The train runs daily except Friday (when the Taj Mahal is closed). There is on-board catering, with both Indian and Continental cuisine served. Its cleanliness, food, and ticket availability are all excellent. Plus, it's a punctual train with minimal delays.
  • If you want to get an early start, the best option is the 12002 New Delhi Habibganj Shatabdi Express . This train has one stop. It departs New Delhi Railway Station at 6 a.m. and arrives at Agra at 7:57 a.m. The train runs every day. Its ticket availability and punctuality are excellent, and cleanliness is good.
  • The 12280 Taj Express Superfast from New Delhi Railway Station to Agra is also popular (and it stops at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, too) but the trip takes nearly three hours. It departs at 6:45 a.m. and arrives in Agra at 9:32 a.m. The train has four stops and runs every day. It has excellent ticket availability. Punctuality and cleanliness are good, but there's no pantry or onboard restaurant.
  • Alternatively, try the 22416 Andhra Pradesh AC Super Fast Express if you'd prefer sleeper accommodations. This train departs from New Delhi Railway Station at 6:25 a.m. and arrives at Agra at 9:10 a.m. It's fully air-conditioned, runs daily, and doesn't have any stops. However, delays are sometimes an issue.

If you're looking for the cheapest way to get from Delhi to Agra, the bus is your best option. The company RedBus shows you itineraries for all of the different bus companies and lets you purchase tickets directly from their website. Standard buses can be overcrowded, overheated, and stop at multiple cities along the route, so look for buses that say "Deluxe" or explicitly list air-conditioning as an included amenity.

Even though the bus is the most affordable option, the price difference between the bus and train is minimal, and the speed and comfort of the train are worth paying a few dollars more. However, if you need last-minute tickets and the trains are fully reserved, then the bus is a reliable backup option.

Driving your own vehicle from Delhi to Agra is only for those with ample experience driving in India. If you aren't familiar with India's driving laws—or drivers' tendencies to disregard those laws—then driving your own vehicle is the most stressful and unsafe option for travel. However, if the train or bus is too much of a hassle, hiring a private car or taxi is the easiest option for getting to the Taj Mahal. Prices start at about $40 for a one-way trip in a sedan and get more expensive for larger vehicles. The drive normally takes about three hours, but traffic around Delhi is notoriously hectic and the actual trip may be much longer. The best method for finding a car is to ask at your hotel or accommodations. Not only will the driver pick you up directly from the hotel, but they can also arrange all of the travel details so you don't have to worry.

What to See in Agra

The main attraction in Agra is, without a doubt, the Taj Mahal . Many tourists go from the train station to the Taj Mahal and then directly back to the train, without seeing any of the other historical sites that Agra has to offer. If you have the time, don't miss out on the other UNESCO World Heritage sites also located nearby. The Agra Fort is a walled city that was home to the Mughal emperors of the 17th century, when Agra was still the capital of their vast empire. The town of Fatehpur Sikr i is just outside of Agra and offers the same majesty as the Taj Mahal but with a fraction of the tourists. Read on to find out more about the top places to visit in and around Agra .

When to Visit

Like many parts of Northern India, the best time of year to visit Agra is between October and February, avoiding the scorching heat of summer and the monsoon rains. Regardless of the time of year, make sure your trip to Agra doesn't fall on a Friday when the Taj Mahal is closed for religious reasons.

A Word of Warning: Dangers and Annoyances

When arriving at Agra station, be prepared to be accosted by beggars and touts. Touts operate in sophisticated gangs that have counterparts in other cities who identify potential targets at railway stations. At Agra, the touts commonly claim to be guides or taxi drivers and use ploys such as free taxi rides or the promise of heavy discounts. There are 24-hour official prepaid auto- rickshaw and taxi booths just outside the Agra railway station; always use these to avoid any potential problems with a would-be scammer.

You can take a train from New Delhi Railway Station to Agra, which takes about two hours. The quickest option is the non-stop 12050 Gatimaan Express, which travels at 99 miles per hour.

The bus is the cheapest option to travel between Delhi and Agra, but not the fastest. You can see itineraries and buy tickets from RedBus .

Delhi is located 140 miles (225 kilometers) northwest of Agra.

How to Get Around Agra

Getting from delhi to agra by train.

  • Cost : from US$6 per seat with AC
  • Time : from 1 hour 40 minutes to 4 hours

Travelling by train, you can appreciate the scenery along the railways and share stories with the locals.

Dozens of trains depart from Delhi to Agra between 04:25 and 23:40 every day. The fastest train takes only 1 hour 40 minutes and the slowest one takes 4 hours. It can be very convenient and swift to travel between these two cities by train.

In India, (slower) non-air-conditioned trains are not recommended as the conditions inside are less comfortable/pleasant. Among the various train choices from Delhi to Agra, you can enjoy the best facilities on a Gatimaan Express, Bhopal Shatabdi Express, or CSMT Rajdhani . They are fully air-conditioned trains with meals included. Vegetarian food is available as well.

The signs, directions, and train information inside Delhi station are not easy to understand . Thus, you might need some time to figure out your platform and train. You're advised to arrive at Delhi station at least one hour before departure especially if you're a first-timer.

If you're travelling during public holidays , book your train tickets as soon as they go on sale . Train tickets are available from 1 month to 4 months prior to the departure date. The huge demand for holiday tickets makes them sell out soon.

Booking tickets with a reliable agent is the most convenient way . Most foreign visitors get stuck on registering and payment for online bookings at IRCTC — India's official train ticketing website. Buying tickets on the spot is time-consuming and you are not guaranteed a ticket if they are in short supply.

Travelling with us , we can take care of your train tickets along with other aspects of your tour. For as much of a worry-free booking as possible, You enjoy 100% refund of any payments made to China Highlights prior to 3 weeks before departure ( detail⇒ ).

For a shorter train journey , like Delhi to Agra, you will arrive as scheduled most of the time . However, delays might happen on foggy or rainy days. Get more ideas about planning your India trip >>>

Enjoy a Private Transfer from Delhi to Agra

  • Cost : from US$70 per person
  • Time : from 3 hours

If you would like the most flexibility and least travel hassles, a private transfer is the best choice , taking 3 to 4 hours. Whether a private transfer arranged by a travel agent or a cab hired by yourself, they can meet you where you like in Delhi and transfer you to anywhere in Agra.

A single journey from Delhi to Agra will cost about US$70 per person. It is quite a bit higher than train and bus tickets. But, bear in mind you still have to get between your hotel and train/bus stations in both Delhi and Agra, which will probably add some taxi costs.

Most travelers who have tried to use OLA (Indian Uber) for a cab have given up, due to communication problems with the driver , because few drivers speak English well and most have heavy accents . What's more, if your driver is not experienced , a 3-hour drive could turn out to be a 6-hour journey! For a similar price, but much safer and more worry-free, contact us for a private transfer. We also have the best suggestions about How Long to Spend in India (for First Timers): from 5 Days to 1 Month >>>

Taking a Bus from Delhi to Agra

  • Cost : from US$5 per seat with AC
  • Time : from 3½ hours

A bus is the most cost-effective option to take you from Delhi to Agra . If you take a bus, it takes about 3½–6 hours depending on your bus. Tip: Double-check the location of the departure and arrival stations, because some of them are around 30 minutes from downtown Delhi/Agra.

You can buy tickets on the spot or online, through an agency, or even at your hotel. You're suggested to book an air-conditioned bus for a better experience . The price of a sleeper ticket is almost triple that for a seat.

In India, the signs for the buses are usually in Hindi and the driver might only speak Hindi too. You might have some difficulty in finding your bus and getting off at the correct stop . Punctuality is another issue , since they might wait for all seats to be occupied before departing. Besides, not all buses use the expressway, and detours often happen . Thus, taking a bus is more suggested for seasoned travelers or people with plenty of time.

After arriving in Agra, you can get around the city by private car, cab, or auto-rickshaw. If you prefer comfort and safety , contact us for a private transfer or take an A/C cab . Auto-rickshaws are the cheapest choice.

If you are taking a one-day round trip from Delhi to Agra, private transport is the best way to save time . You're suggested to visit Agra Fort first, then Itmad-ud-Daula (the Baby Taj), and appreciate the Taj Mahal at sunset before returning to Delhi. Contact us for a hassle-free day tour from/to Agra. Delhi may be hot and incredibly busy, but if you can learn to live with those two negative points, it is an amazing place to visit. Officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, which incorporates the capital city, New Delhi, it is home to over 11 million people and has a history dating back to the 6 th century BCE. Home to iconic sights like the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi has many things to see and do. Once you’ve explored Delhi, head south to Agra to visit two more of India’s most impressive sites: the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. While still busy, Agra is a far smaller city that is quieter and a little more relaxed, providing a break from the chaos of Delhi!

Options for Travel from Delhi to Agra

Options for Travel from Delhi to Agra

Agra is about 230 kilometers (144 miles) south of Delhi, and although that’s quite a long distance, there are actually ways of getting from Delhi to Agra and back in one day. This is a great option if you’re planning to visit just the Taj Mahal and don’t want to spend any more time in Agra, although there’s definitely enough in Agra to warrant a longer stay, if you have the time. There are three ways to get from Delhi to Agra: by train, by bus, or by taxi. Gone are the days of horribly slow trains in this part of India, as there are now high-speed express trains whizzing between Delhi and Agra, getting you there in record time. Going by bus or taxi is also a viable option thanks to better road links. The Yamuna Expressway is a 6-lane expressway that links Delhi to Agra and was intended as a way of reducing the travel time between the two cities. It has definitely made travel faster and smoother for anyone traveling by road!

Delhi to Agra by Train

From Delhi to Jaipur by Train

If you’re thinking of traveling from Delhi to Agra by train, you’ll first need to know that there are lots of trains operating on this route with lots of different options for departures and travel durations, so you need to do some research on this. Luckily, we have done a lot of the research for you, so we’ve listed below some of the most popular trains to catch!

First, you should figure out which train station you will be departing from. There are two main railways stations in Delhi: The primary one is New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) and the secondary one, which is good if you’re staying in the south of Delhi, is Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (NZM), which is about twenty minutes south of NDLS, making it closer to Agra. When you arrive in Agra there’s just the one railway station, Agra Cantonment (AGC), making it easy to know when to get off the train!

If you want to get to Agra quickly – especially if you’re planning to be there just for the day – you’ll want to look into the newest semi-high speed train, the Gatimaan Express. It takes about an hour and forty minutes to get from Delhi to Agra, departing from the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station at 8:10am, and arriving in Agra at 9:50am. There’s a selection of different seat and ticketing options for this train, as well as food served onboard and good, clean facilities. Note that this train does not operate on Fridays as that’s the day when the Taj Mahal is closed anyway, otherwise it runs every other day and has a good reputation for punctuality.

The New Delhi Habidganj Shatabdi Express is another option for an early departure that allows you to visit Agra in just one day. This one leaves from the New Delhi Railway Station at 6am and arrives at 7:57am, so it’s not much slower than the previous train but it can be quite a bit cheaper depending on your seat selection.

The Taj Express Superfast, and the Andhra Pradesh AC Super Fast Express, both departing from New Delhi Railway Station, are two other options if you find the first ones are full. The Andhra Pradesh is the cheaper of these two but does not have air conditioning.

Of course, you don’t have to travel in the morning and you may even want to avoid the morning trains if you’re planning to visit Agra for more than a day. It seems that many of the trains do get booked up in advance, so be sure to book your tickets early. You can search and book these trains from Delhi to Agra on the travel website, 12Go.asia .

Delhi to Agra by Bus

Delhi to Agra by Bus

While train ticket prices do vary according to the train you’re traveling on and the class of seat you buy, trains from Delhi to Agra are generally more expensive than the buses. So, if you’re looking to save yourself some money, going by bus may be better for you. This is a good option if you’re going to Agra for a few days and don’t need to rush there and back; with the better express roads connecting Delhi to Agra, buses get there a lot faster than they used to but are still slower than the trains, taking somewhere around 3 hours and 45 minutes, depending on the company.

Delhi to Agra by Taxi

One final option is to travel from Delhi to Agra by taxi. While this seems more expensive on paper, it can be an affordable way to travel because you’re paying for the car rather than for each passenger. With a van that can seat six people, traveling by taxi from Delhi to Agra makes sense if you’re going with your family or a group of people and it’s extra convenient because private taxis can be booked in advance and arranged to pick you up from anywhere in Delhi, and drop you anywhere in Agra. Private taxis ca be booked online through 12Go if you’d to make use of this convenient way to travel.

With improvements to both the railway system and the highways, getting from Delhi to Agra is now much faster and easier than it ever was before. Whether you are planning to go for just a day – which you can do if you catch an early train – or you’re heading to Agra for a longer stay, buses, trains or taxis are all viable options.

Two of us (male and female) are travelling to Delhi in early November - what's the safest and best way to travel to Agra -is it by Train?

' class=

There is a good train and road connectivity between Delhi and Agra.....either way is fine....it is possible to do a day trip to Agra by both ways but by train you get more time....by road is more hectic ....on the other hand a night is highly suggested in Agra.

Rashid Agra

delhi to agra travel options

By both way are fine but it's depend where you stay in Delhi? By road by express way is very good but train is also available for agra its leave very early at 0615 and back later at 2230hrs in November days are shorter so by road you are independent for travel but by train not. It's your choice witch is suitable for you.

' class=

As returning train comes very late in Delhi so I always suggest to use Morning Shatabadi Exp Train & return by car . In this way you will have more time to visit Agra and also can visit Fatehpur Sikri . It will be a little expensive but you can experience Indian train as well as car too.

One night is recommended here to enjoy Taj at sunrise time.

It look amazing at dawn.

Thanks Julie
