Tourism Master Plan | Have Your Say!

PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: June 6, 2022
The City of Cranbrook and local tourism leaders have launched a process to develop a Tourism Master Plan.
Designed to complement the City’s Official Community Plan and Downtown Revitalization Plan, Cranbrook’s Tourism Master Plan will create a vision and path forward for Cranbrook to achieve a community-supported set of tourism objectives and become a year-round destination for travellers from near and far.
“Cranbrook has come a long way as a tourism destination. We have so much to offer travellers as the gateway to the Kootenay Rockies with access to incredible outdoor recreation at our doorstep and a vibrant history and culture that first and foremost recognizes the Ktunaxa homeland, followed by more recent colonial and rail history. This tourism master planning process will allow us to build on our strengths to achieve a set of community-informed goals.”
– Chris Andrews , Chair of the Board of Cranbrook Tourism
Led by a Steering Committee comprised of Cranbrook’s Business Development office, Cranbrook Tourism, the Cranbrook Chamber and the Ktunaxa Nation and supported by an Advisory Committee representing a wide and diverse range of local interests, the process will include visitor intercept research as well as significant community engagement.
“While it is important to understand the visitor perspective in developing Cranbrook’s Tourism Master Plan, it is also imperative that we understand and respect the values and aspirations of our residents and business owners. This community provides a ‘social license’ to tourism operators allowing them to share Cranbrook with the world. The Tourism Master planning process provides a platform for residents of Cranbrook to contribute their ideas and we look forward to hearing what our community has to say about our tourism future.”
– Darren Brewer, the City of Cranbrook’s Business Development Officer notes.
A resident survey is the first step to this community engagement – all residents of Cranbrook are encouraged to complete the survey online.
Resident intercept surveys will also occur over the summer at the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market.

The plan is a partnership between organizations such as the city, Cranbrook Tourism, Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce and the Ktunaxa Nation Council to develop a master plan that will help guide decisions, bolster current tourism assets in the community and set future tourism-related goals.
To that end, numerous sources of funding supporting the plan include $50,000 from the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ETSI-BC), $20,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust, $5,000 from the Regional District of East Kootenay, and the city’s own contribution of $18,500.
“We are thankful to ESTI-BC, Columbia Basin Trust and the RDEK for their investment into our community,” said Mayor Lee Pratt. “This funding will allow the city to look ahead and build out a tourism strategy that will best exemplify what the Cranbrook has to offer British Columbia, Canada, and the world.”
One of 27 successful applicants for ETSI-BC funding, the $50,000 grant is the maximum amount of funding per project that the organization provides through its Building Economic Development Capacity funding stream.
“The team at ETSI-BC is delighted to support the City of Cranbrook on this initiative,” says Laurel Douglas, CEO of ETSI-BC. “This project aligns with our strategic pillar of building economic development capacity and supporting regional economic development partnerships in the Southern Interior of BC. We look forward to the outcomes of this tourism strategy initiative.”
Will Nixon, Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits with Columbia Basin Trust, voiced his support for the plan.
“We are pleased to support the City, the Ktunaxa Nation Council, the Cranbrook Chamber and Cranbrook Tourism to develop a plan to further tourism opportunities as an economic driver in the Cranbrook area,” said Nixon. “The community of Cranbrook and Ktunaxa ʔamakʔis are places of great beauty and history that are full of recreational opportunities. This partnership will ensure that residents and visitors alike benefit from a well-developed plan.”
The RDEK’s contribution to the plan was approved last week during a board meeting in Cranbrook, as a staff report noted that the city’s economic success directly benefits Area C residents.
“We are witnessing an increase in active transportation within our region as our trails and recreational opportunities gain local, provincial, national and international awareness. There are tremendous health and economic benefits that go along with the implementation of a well-designed tourism strategy, and we are proud to support the City of Cranbrook in the development of its Tourism Master Plan,” said Rob Gay, RDEK board chair.
In addition to developing a tourism master plan, the city is also currently working on a Downtown Revitalization Master Plan, which will also include tourism elements and opportunities.
“This is a watershed moment for our tourism sector. It’s time to polish the unplucked gem,” said Darren Brewer, Business Development Officer at the City of Cranbrook. “We will create an inclusive and bold vision for our city and invite everyone in our community to participate.”
“In a short period of time we worked in collaboration and were able to develop a meaningful relationship with the City of Cranbrook, the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce and Cranbrook Tourism,” said Janice Alpine, Business Development Officer and Tourism Engagement with the Ktunaxa Nation Council. “Our ideals in working together is to develop and understand how Tourism and Heritage Tourism is a tool to help our perspectives merge.”
The plan will be critical in setting the future direction for tourism not just in Cranbrook but the region, according to Kristy Jahn-Smith, Executive Director of Cranbrook Tourism.
“Hearing what residents and local business want for the future will be key to the process, ensuring we move forward in a productive and sustainable way,” she said. “The plan will ensure we are inclusive and forward thinking, while also maximizing collaboration between key partners and ensuring businesses and residents benefit from growth of the tourism economy.”

The City of Cranbrook and tourism partners have launched an online survey available to residents and business owners aimed at helping to develop a tourism master plan. The City hopes to have community members be part of tourism goals and objectives moving forward.
The plan will create a vision and path forward for Cranbrook to achieve community-supported tourism objectives and become a year-round destination for travellers, the City said in a release.
The first step in community engagement is through the online survey, which asks a variety of questions about tourism in the city.
One such question is, “ten years from now, what is the image you would like to have come to mind when the world is talking about the destination Cranbrook?”
The tourism master plan was designed to compliment both the City’s Official Community Plan (OCP) and the Downtown Revitalization Plan, the City adds.
“Cranbrook has come a long way as a tourism destination,” said Chris Andrews, Chair of the Board of Cranbrook Tourism. “We have so much to offer travellers as the gateway to the Kootenay Rockies with access to incredible outdoor recreation at our doorstep and a vibrant history and culture that first recognizes the Ktunaxa homeland, followed by more recent colonial and rail history. This tourism master planning process will allow us to build on our strengths to achieve a set of community-informed goals.”
According to some facts provided by the City, in 2019, tourism contributed more to GDP than any other primary resource industry at $7.4 billion. Oil and gas came behind at $4.8 billion, agriculture and fishing at $3.3 billion and forestry and logging at $1.6 billion.
Tourism also employed 130,300 people in 2019 - roughly one out of 16 people employed in the province.

Heading up the research for this tourism process is a steering committee comprised of the Cranbrook Business Development office, Cranbrook Tourism, the Cranbrook Chamber and the Ktunaxa Nation. There is also an advisory committee that will oversee a variety of local interests.
Darren Brewer, Business Development Officer for Cranbrook says that the survey will help the committee to better understand the needs of residents and business owners, while also taking into account the visitor experience.
“While it is important to understand the visitor perspective in developing Cranbrook’s tourism master plan, it is also imperative that we understand and respect the values and aspirations of our residents and business owners,” said Brewer. “This community provides a ‘social license’ to tourism operators, allowing them to share Cranbrook with the world. The tourism master planning process provides a platform for residents of Cranbrook to contribute their ideas and we look forward to hearing what our community has to say about our tourism future.”
The survey is available for all residents and everyone is encouraged to participate. It can be found online through this link , or by scanning the QR code below. There will be surveys available at the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market as well.
The City also encourages residents to view more about the OCP, downtown plan and tourism initiatives at choosecranbrook.ca .

The said plan for Cranbrook, City staff says will develop a vision and path forward to grab a community aided tourism objectives and become a destination visited by travellers all year round.
Chris Andrews, chair of the board of Cranbrook Tourism said that Cranbrook as a tourism destination has come a long way. We have different things to provide to the travellers as the doorway to the Kootenay Rockies with the right to entry to unbelievably adventurous outdoor recreation at the front doorstep along with a vivacious culture and history that first identifies the Ktunaxa homeland, followed by the colonial and rail history of the recent times.

Cranbrook City Council seeks further discussion on Tourism Master Plan

Cranbrook City Council wishes to discuss the City’s tourism master plan in further detail.
Following a presentation from the plan’s development team, council will organize a committee of the whole meeting for an in-depth discussion before implementing the plan.
Suzanne Denbak with Cadence Strategies says Cranbrook’s mix of outdoor and urban amenities could make it an ideal travel location.
“You do have this amazing natural outdoor recreational access, but your urban amenities are there too,” Denbak says. “You have built facilities with the capacity to host festivals, sporting events, concerts, sport tournaments, and you have a heritage downtown with plans to revitalize it. You have space and room to grow visitation.”
Denbak says their shared vision would make Cranbrook a destination that’s inviting, intriguing and inspiring for residents and visitors.
“[Cranbrook is] easy to access, it’s easy to get around, it’s easy to enjoy no matter your age, or ability, or interest,” she says. “There are many destinations in the Kootenay Rockies region that play to the epic adrenaline type experience. You have that, you can continue to have that in Cranbrook, but you have more.”
No word on when the meeting will happen
