In choosing your RV rental, make sure you read the details of your rental. Just like with Airbnb, you’re renting a vehicle—or “property”—from an individual person. So the same level of due diligence is required. Make sure you fully vet the listing, and look for highly-rated vehicles with a lot of positive reviews.

Don’t book vehicles that don’t have reviews yet , unless you’re willing to take the chance that things might not go as planned.
Listings that are available for “Instant Book” are great , too, because you can make the booking immediately without having to wait for approval from the RV owner.
Similar to Airbnb, most rentals require a security deposit , which will be an additional upfront cost to your reservation. This deposit is, of course, refunded when you return the rental. It’s just like placing your credit card on hold at a hotel for incidental expenses.

After securing your reservation, you’ll arrange a time to exchange keys with the RV owner. This is a similar procedure to renting an apartment with Airbnb. I think this was mostly a lack of knowledge about renting on the owner’s part.

On the day of your trip, you’ll meet the RV owners for the pick-up. They will most likely give you a walkthrough of the RV rental and have you perform a renter vehicle inspection (just like renting a car!). You’ll also need to sign a contract and renter return form to note your mileage, generator, and water tank usage.

Once everything is signed, you’ll be given the keys and the green light to start your unforgettable RV adventure!

Is it Cheaper to RV or Stay in Hotels?

The cost of an RV can be cheaper than a hotel or Airbnb, but not always. The price of RV rentals are set by the individual RV owners, which means the cost per night of your RV rental will vary depending on location, type, and amenities.

However, the same goes for any Airbnb rental or hotel. You can save big bucks by sleeping in a shared dorm hostel, or you can splurge on a luxury resort with ocean views. The cost of a hotel per night will also depend on different contributing factors.

RENTAL OF YOUR RV

If your gorgeous, well-kept RV sits in your backyard most of the year, wanting to be taken on a fun trip, you might want to try advertising it as a place to rent on Airbnb.

It’s a fantastic small side venture in an underserved market. This is especially useful if you live in a gorgeous, outdoor-oriented state or city. And don’t worry if you’re not comfortable renting out your lovely family RV to strangers. It is all up to you (or whoever owns the vehicle).

However, if you want to rent out your RV, here’s a simple tutorial on how to get started:

Go to Airbnb.com and click the “Become a Host” button.
Enter your country, the type of rental (in general), and the quantity of space available to potential renters.
Sign in or make a new account (all free).
For a fast grasp of the community that Airbnb.com seeks to facilitate, read their “Before You Join” section.
Select “Unique space” under “What kind of place are you listing?” and then Camper/RV.
Choose how much of the area you’ll rent out, whether it’ll be mostly utilized by visitors or not, and if you’ll list this as a company or an individual organization.
Fill out the RV’s information (bathrooms, rooms, beds, etc).
Include a location for your RV (where would renters need to travel to pick it up or stay in it?). This makes life a little easier if you live in a remote region.

Follow these simple steps if you want to rent an RV.

Visit Airbnb.com.
Enter the area you’re interested in RVing in the upper left corner of the screen (or a nearby area you can travel to with the rented RV).
Go to the top-right “Filters” button, scroll down to “Unique Homes,” and choose the Camper/RV option.
Usually, at least a few possibilities will appear, but if none do, try another place!
If alternatives do appear, look through the available RVs and continue from there!

Some will appear more professional or ordered than others. If you’re looking for a rental rented out by a professional, you can return to the “Filter” page and click the “Superhost” button one more time.

This usually narrows the search considerably! Congratulations if you’re pleased with the RVs you’re seeing. You’re on your way to renting out one of Airbnb’s lovely campers or RVs.

Here are some things to bear in mind:

The host does not have to be a “Superhost” to provide excellent communication or an adorable, secure rental with several facilities.
Pay close attention to the images. Keep an eye out for images that are grainy or otherwise unappealing (having pictures of dirty kitchens or messy rooms).
They don’t have to be professionally photographed, but they should show a caring owner.
Look through a few possibilities to get a sense of the pricing range you’re looking at. The cost of renting a room for a night or two will vary greatly depending on where you rent!

Here are the steps to rent your RV or camper on Airbnb:

Research your city’s laws on short-term rentals on your property to make sure you comply.
Sign up on Airbnb as a host and create a detailed listing that clearly describes all rules, guidelines, and “need to know” topics, as well as amenities.
Decide how you will check guests in.
Provide unique glamping amenities to impress your guests, such as fire pit, wood, smore’s, etc.
Establish how you will provide sewer, electrical, and water service to your RV or camper.

Airbnb RV Step #1: Determine if it is Legal to Airbnb Your Camper?

Before you decide to Airbnb your RV, make sure that your city’s laws and ordinances do not prohibit it. Some cities do not allow RV living inside city limits, some have rules regarding where and how you hook up your RV or who stays in it (not allowing renters), and some cities don’t care either way.

You’ll also want to check your HOA or CC&Rs to make sure you’re not in violation of your neighborhood or housing complex rules by renting out a RV in your yard.

You’ll also want to have dedicated short-term rental insurance if you’re doing vacation rental activities on your property. Your homeowners insurance will most likely not cover any activities related to Airbnb and may cancel your policy if they discover what you are doing. Get short-term rental insurance like Proper Insurance .

Airbnb RV Tip #2: Fill Out Your Listing, Providing a Clear & Detailed Listing Description

Start off by signing up on Airbnb. Once signed up, click the large button “Create new listing.”

Tell Airbnb what kind of place you have. You’ll want to select whether you are sharing your entire RV or just a portion of the RV. You will select how many guests can stay in your RV and the location. Then select “Unique space” button and then “Camper/ RV” button.
In the next screen you will identify how many bedrooms you have and how many beds are available.
On the next screen, you will identify how many bathrooms are available.
Provide your specific address, and provide locate your RV’s location on a map. The map can only be seen by confirmed guests.
You will then select the amenities available to the guests.
Next, type in the title, description, and upload photos of the interior and exterior of your RV, and site photos. You’ll describe how available you’ll be as a host, and if guests will see you during their stay.
You’ll also have an opportunity to write in your House Rules for your property and RV. You can find more information on house rules here . You will also select check-in & check-out times for your guests, and provide house manual instructions on how to operate appliances, and other amenities.

Airbnb RV Step #3: Check-In For Your Guests

Don’t forget to include strict check-in and check-out times so that you have enough time to prepare your RV for the next guests.

You can either provide self-check-in for your guests, or you can show your guests the ropes (how to work the stove, how to unravel the awning, or how to turn the heat/air conditioning on and off). Every host is different when it comes to check-in. If you are providing self-check-in, make sure to leave your house manual printed out and laminated in your RV for the guests to read through.

Airbnb Step #4: Try “Glamping” to Elevate Your Game

Glamping (a combination of the words “glamour” and “camping”) has become a trend in the camping world, catering to the RV who is looking for an outdoorsy experience with luxury touches. Consider sprucing up your RV with some added amenities to show your renters that you’ve gone the extra mile for their comfort and for a unique camping experience.

When I went to Talladega National Forest, we camped on the land of married yoga instructors who provided some unique amenities to make our trip memorable. We got to participate in an outdoor yoga class in the middle of the woods (awesome!).

Maybe you’re not planning on going that far, but here are some amenities you could include to make the stay unforgettable:

A fire-ring, chairs, and s’ mores (kids won’t forget this, but even adults love a good s’more or two).
Some fun card games or board games, or even some outdoor games that your guests could set up quickly and play to ward off boredom.
Unique exterior lighting so that your guests can sit outside, drink a glass of wine, and relax once the sun goes down.
If your RV doesn’t have a shower, you could offer a relaxing, private, stand-up shower with some spa toiletries.
Add touches to make your RV feel like home: a vase with flowers, cute rugs, and/or wall décor.
Provide an easy-recipe cookbook so that guests can find creative ways to best use the limited kitchen in your RV.

A quick note: Glamping exists in so many forms and fashions, from simple bonus touches to all-out luxury in an outdoor setting. If you want to add these touches to your RV, be sure to talk it up in your listing description to attract renters.

Airbnb RV Step #5: Proving Permanent Power, Water, and Sewer

Since Airbnb does not allow you to rent out vehicles for travel, you’ll have to treat your RV like a cabin or house, meaning you’ll need to put it in one place and leave it there.

Consider providing permanent power, water, and sewer in this location as well. You’ll likely need permission from the city to do this, but you’ll probably find that the advantages outweigh the extra cost.

While you could run power and water from your home and empty the sewer between guest stays, it would be wise to consider the alternative. In the case of power, an extension cord will only provide enough amperage for lights and small appliances.

Here are some reasons why I’ve found that running permanent electricity and sewer is ideal:

If you want your guest to be able to use an air conditioner or heater, you’ll most likely need permanent electricity.
Permanent power and sewer will eliminate the unsightly extension cord.
It will make your life easier as a host. If you can at all avoid it, you wouldn’t want to have to empty the sewer mid-stay, which is a definite possibility if you’ve got renters in your RV for more a week or more.

Permanent power and sewer is expensive, though (laying a concrete pad or expanding your driveway, digging a trench and running plumbing and electrical out to the RV), so do your research before you make the call.

What if you live in a cold (and I mean COLD) climate? There are extra challenges when it comes to keeping your guests cozy in your backyard RV. Since RVs lose heat quickly, especially through thin windows, and pipes freeze, there are some extra steps you can take to make sure your RV stays operational without issues:

Purchase a skirt to keep your RV’s plumbing and batteries from freezing.
Consider purchasing holding tank heaters, typically available in 12v DC and 120v AC.
Provide a heated hose for your water supply. They are controlled by a thermostat and do require AC power to operate. Better yet, just fill up the holding tank with water and disconnect it until the next guest.
Keep the water supply line off of the ground and away from the snowbank.
Insulate your RV’s windows with thermal curtains or solar blankets. You may also consider insulated RV wiindows if your RV only has single-pane windows.
Provide a space heater for your guests.
Provide a heated blanket.

Airbnb RV Tip #7: Sharing Your Backyard Space While Doing Airbnb

Unless you’ve got acres upon acres of open land, you’ve probably had some concerns about sharing your backyard space with your renters. To make your guests (and you) feel like they have more privacy, set up your RV facing away from the back of your home.

You can give them a good view of your property while also dividing your backyard space using the RV itself. Or, if your guests are open to socializing, consider spending some time with them- maybe having a BBQ or campfire together- to break down awkward walls.

Or, if both you and your renters want privacy, you may have to spend your outdoor time in your front yard until their stay is over– after all, they are paying to rent this space from you and their comfort is one of your biggest concerns.

But can you rent RVs from Airbnb?

Because I had not considered Airbnb as a source for RV rentals, I researched the topic.

To my surprise, I found many RV owners had their camper set up for rent in many locations across the U.S.

Whether you’re looking for a unique glamping experience or a bare-bones off-grid camping trip, you can find just what you want by searching the Airbnb website.

Studies show that renting an RV is affordable, coming in 20-60 percent cheaper than standard vacation options. So for those looking for a different kind of travel experience, read on as I discuss why you should consider an Airbnb RV rental for your next vacation.

Hotel rooms or renting an Airbnb room within a home can feel restrictive. Space is at a premium, and the only way you can enjoy the outdoors is to pack up your belongings and head out to a beach or park. An RV rental typically provides you with more space to spread out.

Now you may ask yourself, how can you spread out when RVs are small?

While the interior of most campers is “efficient” if not tight, most RVs for rent on Airbnb are set up in either a private area of a homeowner’s yard or they are set up in a separate location entirely.

You can enjoy private outdoor living spaces to relax but have the comforts of home and security of a solid roof over your head when it’s time to sleep, or there’s inclement weather.

What you won’t have is a noisy room of guests on the other side of a hotel wall or the need to search for an open table and chairs out on the patio.

One of the best parts about RV rentals from Airbnb is the cost. When you compare the cost of a hotel room in a popular location to the nightly rental rates for an RV, you can save hundreds of dollars. You’ll also receive a unique vacation experience unlike any other.

For example, you can expect to pay between $150-600 a night for a hotel in Los Angeles, California. I found several Airbnb RV rentals in Los Angeles from $22-125 per night. Many of these camper rentals were in fantastic locations near nightlife and the beach, or up in the hills with amazing views.

For those who live in a popular tourist destination and own a camper that is not in use most of the year, renting out your RV may be a way to pick up extra cash. Of course, you need to check with local zoning laws to make sure it’s if it’s legal to rent out an RV sitting on your property .

#4 – Camping or Glamping Options

Another benefit to choosing to rent an RV from Airbnb is the fabulous vacation experience it offers.

Create special memories by renting a quaint vintage camper for a romantic weekend escape, or bring the whole family for a week of hiking, fishing, and campfires in the mountains.

Don’t like to rough it? No worries! Many of the RV rentals offer excellent amenities like cushy outdoor furniture, luxurious bedding, and free internet that turn a camping trip into a glamping adventure.

You can spend a weekend in an original Airstream, or check out the newest 45-foot fifth-wheel camper. Renting an RV from Airbnb or other rental service is a great way to try out different camper styles for those who are thinking about buying a camper.

You can experience first-hand the little quirks that make one RV feel more comfortable to you than another, before spending thousands of dollars on a camper you end up hating because you need to squeeze into the bathroom to shut the door.

How to Use the Airbnb Website

I had trouble locating RV rentals on Airbnb when I began my search directly from their website. I did find campers for rent here or there by scrolling through all of the rentals for my particular location of interest.

But when I type in “RV Pensacola Florida” in their internal search bar, let’s just say the experience wasn’t user-friendly. I know I’m not the most technically-savvy gal around, but this was frustrating since I know Airbnb has RVs for rent!

So how did I find RVs for rent through Airbnb?

Through trial and error, I found the quickest way to locate Airbnb RV rentals is to type your information into an internet search engine.

For example, if I were looking to stay in South Padre Island, Texas, I type in “airbnb south padre island texas rv” into Google, and it magically pops you to all Airbnb RV rentals in that location.

This search technique works perfectly to take you directly to the page of rental options available. Once there, type in the dates you want, and the number of adults and children in the travel party. You can also check if any RV rentals are pet-friendly.

Peruse the listings available for your criteria, and click on the listings for more information and photos of each RV rental. All amenities like WiFi, parking, and check-in process are posted. You can also see reviews of the host, location, and condition of the camper.

What Makes Airbnb Different That Other RV Rental Sites?

The number one difference between Airbnb and other RV rental sites are that the majority of these camper rentals are permanent and not for you to drive around.

I did find the occasional empty lot for rent that had RV hook-ups and parking pads so that you could drive a camper to the location. I found this interesting since I never thought of looking on AirBnB for a campsite while traveling full-time in my RV. I now have a new option in my arsenal of potential camping locations!

Airbnb has protections in place for the renter and host when the property rents through the website. The website also lists places to eat and exciting things to do near the rental location making it easy to plan your trip.

Types of Campers

Most of the RVs for rent on Airbnb are trailer-type campers. Airstreams have a strong showing on Airbnb, along with vintage travel trailers decked out with comfortable amenities.

Most of the RV rentals were set up to accommodate 1-2 guests, and some would allow small pets.

I did see a few fifth-wheels or long travel trailers that would provide plenty of space for a larger family. There were also a couple of motorhomes set up for occupancy as well.

Another option I saw was park model RVs that look more like a tiny cottage or cabin that could sleep 4-6 people.

The RV rentals I saw on Airbnb tend to offer way more than just a roof over your head. Many provide decking or patios with seating, umbrellas, fire pits, and grills. More likely than not you will have either sweeping views outside your door or the camper is set in a cozy area where you can enjoy private space.

From downtown Denver, to the coastal beaches of Florida, to the redwoods in California, you can find RVs for rent on Airbnb.

Being able to pinpoint a specific neighborhood within a larger metropolitan area is another excellent reason to check out Airbnb before booking at a hotel, condo, or campground. You can find listings in specific sections of a town, putting you closer to the attractions or family you wish to visit.

Property owners who choose to rent on Airbnb know they are in special locations with high tourist demand, like within walking distance to shopping, dining, beaches, parks, museums and more. These niche locations can be within neighborhoods where hotels are not available.

It was quite a surprise to find camper rentals in the middle of the city or desert, up in the mountains, next to lakes and rivers, and close to the beach. For those looking for a vacation out of the ordinary, I suggest you check out the options available for RV and camper rentals on Airbnb.

What to Expect During the Rental Period

If you are a first-time renter from Airbnb you may have questions about what a host will provide and how much interaction you should expect to have with them.

Airbnb has requirements for hosts to provide basic amenities such as linens, soap, toilet paper, pillows, and towels. How much a host provides of each is up to them, but realize that a host wishes to get good reviews and keep the cash flowing, so it makes sense for them to provide guests with plentiful, quality amenities.

Airbnb also asks hosts to deal with booking requests promptly (within 24 hours), avoid ruining a trip by canceling a guest reservation, maintain good ratings for service, and greet guests on site when possible.

These requirements can give you peace of mind when booking through the Airbnb website, but this does not guarantee your experience will go without a hitch.

We have all heard of horror stories of rentals not appearing as they were in the listing pictures or of hosts that were rude. Thankfully, these scenarios are few and far between and having protection as a renter when you book through Airbnb can offset any potential damages.

A host has no desire to be in your face when you rent their RV. You may never see them at all during your stay, with keys being left in a lockbox for you to retrieve. A host should always provide a contact number in case of emergencies, but they are not there to cook your meals, hang out, or drive you around.

A guest should clean up before leaving, making sure the trash and linens go in an area the host designates. For the most part, you should behave as you would in a hotel or vacation rental and not trash the RV or make excessive noise.

Other RV Rental O ptions

If you wish to rent an RV that you can drive between locations on your vacation, or you cannot find an RV that interests you on Airbnb, you do have other options.

Two RV rental peer-to-peer websites have a good reputation and a growing list of happy customers. Both of these websites refer to themselves as the “Airbnb” of RV rentals but don’t confuse them with the actual Airbnb company.

If you are a newbie to RVing, or to a particular model of a camper , the best part of these rental sites is knowledgeable hosts. Many, if not all, of the hosts will walk you through set up and tear down procedures and give you tips and tricks for driving and parking.

The host and the renter want the camper, and it’s occupants to return in one piece. Take advantage of any opportunity to ask questions of your host, because any tips and information you can gather can be invaluable once you hit the road.

Each company has different expectations and requirements of their hosts and guests, so take the time to read all the terms and conditions they list on their websites.

The company approves each host and then allows the host to list their RV for rent on their website for a fee. Each listing gives details on price, amenities, and other rental terms.

RVshare has an easy-to-use website with tools to help you determine the right RV rental choice for your needs. The company also offers insurance coverage, roadside assistance, and a loyalty program for customers who rent through their website.

RVshare has rentals available all over the US, as well as in other countries, which gives you flexibility when planning your next vacation.

Want to fly to Colorado and stay in a Denver hotel for a few days, but also want to camp out? Rent a local RV through the RVshare website, and drive it to a state or national park for a couple of days of outdoor adventure then return it before flying home. Many hosts will even deliver or pick up the RV!

Air travel in a state of chaos (security lines are painfully long and the on-time arrivals rate hasn't been this bad since 2014). Hotels aren't exactly welcome either as formerly complimentary offerings like free breakfast buffets have been removed from many properties, and most hotels cut back on services like daily housekeeping .

In light of that, this year might be the perfect time to hit the open road in a recreational vehicle.

Yet for beginners, the world of RV rentals can seem strange and overwhelming. What’s a “Class C” motor home? Do you need a generator? And how does insurance work? In this article we’ll break down the basics of renting your first RV.

Types of RVs

RVs come in all shapes and sizes. Some you drive, while others you tow behind your other car (usually a truck). And within those two categories are multiple subcategories.

Class A motorhomes have all the amenities, but can be tough to drive. They often do not require any special license, though you should have practice driving large vehicles.

Driveable RVs

Class A: This is akin to driving something as large as a bus, and is not for the faint of heart.

Class B: This is comparable to driving and maneuvering an oversized van.

Class C: This is the most likely option you'll go for as a novice RV driver, and is generally not any more difficult than driving a truck.

Besides often being easier to drive, towable RVs can be convenient because you can detach and leave them parked at the campground, while having the freedom to take your car out to explore the area during the day.

Where to rent an RV

RV rentals generally come in two buckets. You might rent from a big company like Cruise America, which typically has more standard offerings, but is less likely to provide you something really unique or personal. Or, you might rent from another, individual RV owner through a site that operates an Airbnb-for-RVs model, like RVshare.

No matter which style you go for, most online RV rental agencies let you compare prices, dates and models. However, unlike car rental companies, which all provide the same basic services in similar ways, the RV rental world is more of a Wild West.

Expect each company to offer different pricing and mileage rules — and rules might vary by individual vehicle, too. There are different rules around minimum rental length, and some let you drive the RV one way, while others require you make a roundtrip journey. Some RV owners will deliver the vehicle to your home — and some will drive it to your campground for you so you don't have to drive it period.

Here are three of the most popular RV rental options, including the pros and cons of each.

RVshare: the biggest (and usually best) peer-to-peer RV rental company of them all

RVshare is basically the Airbnb of RV rental companies, and it claims title to the largest online community for RV renters and owners, having logged more than 3 million nights that renters have spent sleeping in an RV rent via RVshare.

When it comes to picking the perfect RV rental, RVshare's large size is a big plus, as the company has plenty of options to pick from, pretty much no matter where you're renting. You’ll find more traditional motor homes here than its competitor Outdoorsy, but you'll still find those #vanlife-ready ones, too.

At one point, RVshare even offered a Barbie-themed RV for some lucky campers to spend the night in.

How renting from RVshare works

Unlike a company like Cruise America where the type of RV you get is fairly standard no matter where in the country you book, every RV experience through RVshare is unique, given that you're driving an RV owned by a regular person, not a big company.

RVshare has tons of search filters to narrow down what might otherwise be more than 1,000 listings.

It does mean you're going to have to sort through listings to find what you're looking for — and in popular RV areas, there might be more than 1,000 listings to sort through (though that's not necessarily a bad thing).

RVshare has detailed search settings that make it pretty easy to filter by location, features and RV type. Among the robust search filters include dates, group size, vehicle size, price and whether pets are allowed. You can filter for amenities like a toilet, shower or refrigerator, generator, hot water supply. You can also narrow them down by cancellation type (flexible, standard or strict, as determined by the owner).

RVshare also has a few unique rental options, including:

Instant book: This lets you book instantly without waiting for the owner to respond.

Stationary rental: This lets you experience an RV without having to drive it, or worry about where you'll camp. With these rentals, you'll stay right onsite at the owner's property.

Delivery: When you book an RV for delivery , then the owner can either meet you with the RV where you're at, like a nearby airport or your house. Or, they might deliver it to a custom location so you can get out of driving it completely, like the campsite. Some owners even offer services like waste dumping, set up and tear down as part of the delivery.

Stationary rentals and delivery aren't possible with all vehicles, and it might incur an extra fee. But, it can be ideal if you want an RV (purely for the novelty, or perhaps it's a necessity for something like a remotely-located music festival) and don't want the headache of driving and setting it up.

Once you've found the vehicle you want, you'll meet the owner, go through a quick demo, and you're on your way.

To return the RV, you'll usually be responsible for dumping the tanks and filling it with gas, though individual rules can be negotiated with the owner.

Many major RV rental companies including RVshare and Outdoorsy allow for delivery, though it also varies by owner. Outdoorsy says that 70% of its listings offer delivery.

How does RVshare insurance work?

RVshare insurance is transparent and straightforward, When you rent from RVshare, the company's standard insurance package will be automatically included in your price quote, assuming that RV is covered by the RVshare Protection Plan.

Why we love RVshare

Huge selection: RVshare has the biggest selection, making it the most likely you'll find one in your budget and in a size you feel comfortable driving. And hey, if you don't want to drive it, RVshare's destination delivery option is a delightful way to get that camping experience without the stress of parallel parking a small house.

Customer support and security: It's easy to read reviews, sort by policies and browse photos so you know exactly what you're in for. If the RV isn't what you thought it was, it's easy to get in contact with customer service. You can jump on the phone or chat online, both available 24/7. There's also an email customer support form .

Should you run into actual troubles with your RV on the road, every booked reservation through RVshare includes Roadside Assistance, provided by Questx Tow Network.

It's also financially secure. RVshare verifies accounts and performs fraud checks, and payments are conducted though a secure payment platform.

Reasons to take pause before renting from RVshare

Hidden fees are certainly annoying, but post-trip fees can be even worse. While RVshare doesn't have much in the way of hidden fees (fees like insurance and service fees are clearly listed upfront), there is a chance you could get hit with one of many post-trip fees. RVshare allows owners to add on post-trip fees at their discretion. Some shouldn't come as a surprise to renters and are pretty tough to argue with, such as late fees or refueling fees. But some can be pretty vague, like the cleaning fee. RVshare says that RVs naturally get dirty out on the road and that "returning an RV with a normal amount of dirt is acceptable and will not result in any additional charges."

But, it also says that exceptionally dirty RVs can be charged a cleaning fee based on the owners' discretion. If you rent from a dirt stickler, that could be a surprise fee, which isn't exactly a nice memory to end your vacation on.

What's more, post-trip fees get hit with a second, administrative fee. Not only will you owe money back to the owner if you incur one of them, but RVshare tacks on a 15% administrative fee to the renter.

Cruise America: consider it the big box store of RV rentals

You’ve probably seen Cruise America RVs on the highway, covered in gaudy advertising. This ubiquitous rental agency likely owes its success to one important factor: simplicity. But hey, that might not be a bad thing.

Cruise America offers only four motor home options (Compact, Compact Plus, Standard and Large, plus a truck camper alternative called the "Adventure Travel Trailer"), making it a good starting place for daunted beginners.

How renting from Cruise America works

No matter which location you rent from (and there are over 120 around the nation), you'll get a standard rental, so a Compact RV Rental in Connecticut will largely be exactly the same as one in California.

Even between sizes, the interior amenities seem to be similar. While the Large RVs have the most amenities (e.g., there's no generator with the Adventure Travel Trailer, even though all the larger rentals offer one), all Cruise America rentals have air conditioning, a fresh water toilet, shower and refrigerator.

Cruise America’s pricing policy includes lots of add-on fees, so understand the complete cost before booking. Cruise America charges you per mile driven, so these might not be the most economical option for a long road-trip (they may be better suited for a trip where you stayed parked for many days in a row). Like most RV companies, the insurance costs extra, which is unsurprising.

This is Cruise America's Kitchen Kit, which you only get for an additional fee.

But this fee is surprising: the Kitchen and Personal Kit fees.

Cruise America charges you to rent basics like bedding and cookware from them. You'll almost certainly have to add on the Kitchen Kit, which includes plates, utensils, cookware a broom, and so on, and the Personal Kit which consists of towels and linens.

How does Cruise America insurance work?

If you purchase Cruise America's optional Zero Damage plan, you'll only be responsible for $2,000 in the event of vehicle damage or loss. For any additional costs, you'll be covered under most conditions.

Why we love Cruise America

It's a standard, expected experience. You head to one of the more-than 125 rental locations during their rental hours, and you'll meet with a staffed employee to pick up your vehicle.

Since each RV is largely the same, you can ensure a consistent experience — no worries about a photo on a peer-to-peer listing misrepresenting what the RV actually looks like. You know the RV will be ready when you are, a human will help answer your questions, and it'll be what's advertised.

Plus, Cruise America often runs sales that vary by time of year, but often include early booking discounts. Because Cruise America may need to reposition fleets if one location is short on rentals, while another might have too many, Cruise America is also the most likely to offer one way specials . If that one way aligns with your travel plans, you might see incredible savings — and you're less likely to find such deals through peer-to-peer rentals given that the RV usually needs to go back to its owner.

Reasons to take pause before renting from Cruise America

The extra costs for things like linens and cookware are annoying, especially since you'll likely need that stuff anyway.

Cruise America vehicles are also pretty generic. If you're looking for that Instagram-influencer life, this might not be the RV company for you.

And while more than 125 locations around the nation is a lot, that still won't cover RV rentals everywhere. If you're heading someplace off-the-beaten path, then there might not be an RV where you are. Or, you'll have to rent from a more major area and then drive a long way to your campsite of choice, which could cost you more than you intended in gas. It might be better to find an RV through a peer-to-peer site nearer to your destination, which you access through a standard vehicle, cutting down on how much gas your RV guzzles.

Outdoorsy: a hit and miss RV, peer-to-peer rental platform

Similar to RVshare Outdoorsy is a peer-to-peer RV rental platform, making it more like Airbnb than a traditional rental service. This means it offers tremendous selection, from brand-new motor homes to funky vintage vans.

However, it also means that the products, terms and fees vary from owner to owner, requiring more comparison shopping and fine-print reading than a traditional rental. For example, some owners don’t allow pets (at all), while others do (with variable fees).

And because you're renting from an individual, the rental experience can vary widely.

How renting from Outdoorsy works

You'll start by browsing for the perfect RV in Outdoorsy's search tool, which allows you to find the right RV based not just on location, dates and size, but also using robust filters for amenities (water tank, indoor shower, toilet, oven, etc).

Because RV owners can have tricky, varied rules, Outdoorsy makes it easy to find a rental that'll mesh with your travel plans. You can opt in to only showing rentals that are pet-friendly, tailgate-friendly, festival-friendly or that allow smoking,

Outdoosy rental options include:

Instant book: This lets you book instantly without waiting for the owner to approve your request.

'Bring it to me': Opt in to this, and the owner will drop off your vehicle at your house, airport or wherever else you want to meet up. Typically this comes with an extra cost ($10 per mile is pretty common, though it varies by owner).

'Set it up at my destination': Hooking up your RV to the campground can be tricky for first-timers. RV has a clear option where the owner will set up the vehicle at your campsite, RV park or other destination. While you'll have to pay the delivery fee with most rentals, this option can save you money for one big reason: Outdoorsy discounts your insurance since you won't actually be moving the vehicle.

How does Outdoorsy insurance work?

Speaking of insurance, Outdoorsy has a partnership with Assurant to offer liability protection, covering situations including backup accidents, vandalism, fires, stolen RVs and more.

When you rent, you'll be able to choose from three protection packages with varying degrees of coverage, dubbed Peace of Mind, Preferred, or Essential. Each plan has varying physical and liability protection. Typically you'll still have to pay the deductible (which ranges from $1,000 to $4,000), but insurance covers the rest.

Reasons to love Outdoorsy

Most RV owners agree that Outdoorsy has a better commission and fee structure than RVshare, which means they might pass on those cost savings to you, in theory generating a lower-cost rental than what you'd get on RVshare.

No two vehicles are identical, and rentals often have a unique, owner touch. If you love #vanlife, Outdoorsy is probably the site for you. It has neat listings, like custom, luxury boutique camper vans. You'll find cool amenities — we've seen heated mattresses and top-notch speaker systems. Some rentals come with kayaks and paddle boards included.

Reasons to take pause before renting from Outdoorsy

Outdoorsy's customer experience is the most questionable. If the owner doesn't reach out to you ahead of time to give you information on what to expect and how to check-in, don't expect the general Outdoorsy customer support to help you either. Outdoorsy relies on owners to do all that work, but a lackadaisical owner might not — and might leave you hanging.

A NerdWallet staffer had a bizarre experience once when renting from Outdoorsy, where the owner accepted the rental, but never reached out to them between the time the rental was approved and the date of the rental. The staffer reached out to both the owner and Outdoorsy to inquire about check-in details. The owner never responded, and Outdoorsy customer service simply said, "get in contact with the owner."

The staffer ultimately showed up for the rental time at the rental location, and found the RV parked in the driveway — covered in cobwebs. The owners were MIA. Upon calling Outdoorsy customer service again at check-in time, Outdoorsy said they would refund the reservation — only if the owners didn't show up within two hours (they didn't). It was a bizarre experience — and a hassle to remake travel plans at the last minute.

Outdoorsy still needs to work out the kinks with questionable owners, whether it's better vetting upfront, or more proactive customer service.

How much does it cost to rent an RV?

Like any travel expense, the cost of renting an RV will depend on several factors, including seasonality (with summer rentals being more expensive), location and mileage driven. That said, you can expect to spend at least $100 per night for a small RV with few bells or whistles.

Here's a rough estimate of baseline rental costs (provided to NerdWallet by peer-to-peer rental site RVshare), but again, understand that prices can widely vary based on exact rental:

Class A: $150-$250/night (10+ years or older); $350-$450/night (newer).

Class B: $100-$200/night (10+ years or older); $200-$350/night (newer).

Class C: $100-$200/night (10+ years or older); $225-$400/night (newer).

Travel Trailer: $50-$125/night (10+ years or older); $125-$200/night (newer).

Fifth Wheel: $60-$150/night (10+ years or older); $150-$300/night (newer).

This baseline cost might sound appealing compared with the price of, say, renting a car and staying in budget hotels. But the real cost of an RV trip includes many more line items, including:

Fuel. RVs consume a lot of gas. The standard Cruise America vehicle gets 10-12 miles per gallon, so a 1,000-mile trip will require 83-100 gallons. Here's the typical miles per gallon that you can expect per RV type:

Class A: 6-10 miles per gallon.

Class B: 18-25 miles per gallon.

Class C: 8-12 miles per gallon.

Towing a trailer or fifth wheel: 8-12 miles per gallon.

Damage deposit: Most rentals require a refundable damage deposit between $500 to $1,000.

Mileage fees. Unlike rental cars, it’s rare to find an “unlimited mileage” rate for an RV. Cruise America charges $0.35 per mile for most rentals, which likely adds more to the total price than fuel — a 1,000-mile trip costs $350 in mileage fees alone.

Generator fees. Generators provide power to air conditioning, appliances and electrical outlets. They also usually cost extra on some rentals. Some vehicles include a flat per-rental fee, while Cruise America charges $3.50 per hour of use.

Campground fees. You might think RV living means the freedom to camp anywhere, but usually you’ll want to stay in a campground or RV park to take advantage of the amenities. The cost of these facilities can vary widely depending on the facility, from $5 to over $100 per night. Otherwise, you might go the boondocking route, where you just park your RV anywhere it's legal to camp overnight (which can include Walmart parking lots) even, or you might be able to find a free place to stay through a service like Harvest Hosts, though that requires its own membership fee. Here's a general overview of overnight fees, depending on the type of campground you stay at:

Overnight campsites with RV parking and hookups: $20-$50 per night.Luxury RV resort: $60-$100+ per night.State Parks: $5 to $50, depending on the park and hookups.

Cleaning fees. Most RV rental services expect you to return the vehicle’s interior in the same condition you found it. Failing to return a clean vehicle can incur a fee — $250 for Cruise America.

Extras. Camping equipment, bedding, cookware and dozens of other road trip essentials are often provided as “extras” for an additional fee. For example, Cruise America charges $110 per “kitchen kit” and $60 per person for sheets and pillows.

Insurance. You may be able to use your own auto insurance, but if your policy doesn't cover RVs, then you'll want to have separate RV insurance. Learn more about RV insurance here.

Overall, while it may be cost-effective depending on your needs, renting an RV certainly isn’t cheap. It’s a fun, different way to take a road trip, but it’s generally not a great way to save money on your next vacation. Being realistic about these costs ahead of time can help determine an overall trip budget.

Do you need insurance for an RV rental?

The short answer is yes — but that’s where the simplicity ends.

Your existing auto insurance policy might provide some coverage for an RV rental, but this varies from insurer to insurer (and state to state, and policy to policy). We recommend calling your insurance company before renting an RV and asking specifically what is covered, what isn’t, and what you’ll need additional coverage for. Write down any terms you aren’t familiar with, and don’t be afraid to call your agent back with follow-up questions — this is what you’re paying them for.

Each rental company offers its own coverage for vehicles, usually running from basic to premium. More premium coverage will include lower deductibles and greater liability thresholds. The right plan for you will depend on:

What your current auto insurance covers.

Your risk tolerance.

Which vehicle you rent.

Note: Although some credit cards offer auto rental collision damage insurance, many (including the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ) exclude motor homes from this coverage.

Should I consider buying an RV vs. renting one?

Depending on how much you love the RV life, it might be a better investment in the long run to buy an RV outright. Add up the costs above that you’ll pay to RV rental companies like cleaning fees, mileage fees and those “extras” (do you really want to get charged $110 for a kitchen kit every time you hit the road?). Multiply that by how many times you anticipate an RV trip in your lifetime, and those costs might start to make you feel carsick.

In that case, you might find it cheaper to buy your own RV to avoid the pesky fees. Plus, if you buy your own RV, you can fill it with whatever cookware you’d like.

Whether you rent or buy, there are some costs you’ll have to pay either way, including:

Campsite rental fees.

RV insurance.

Vehicle generator fees.

If you rent, you might find yourself on the hook for other fees to the rental company including:

Fees per mile driven.

Items for rent inside the RV, including cookware and bedding.

Additional fees like environment fees.

The bottom line

Different RVs provide different experiences — be sure to choose an RV to rent that will fit your needs and budget while also providing the right amount of space to accommodate your group. Driving an RV is not the same as driving your car, and you can expect poor gas mileage. Be aware that RV parks don’t all provide the same amenities and that there may be unexpected expenses to plan for, such as RV fees or insurance.

The cheapest way to rent an RV is to borrow one from a friend. If that isn’t possible, you can find RV rental options for cheap on peer-to-peer marketplaces like RVShare, RVnGO and Outdoorsy. Keep in mind that even if your RV rental isn’t as cheap as you’d like, you can offset travel expenses by cooking your own food, hiking and staying at affordable RV parks. Is Renting out Your RV Really Profitable? (My Personal Experience)

You may be skeptical that renting out your RV is profitable. In the right situation renting out your RV can be worth it. However, you need to make sure to avoid common pitfalls of the RV rental business… which don’t worry I will get to here. To get an idea of how much you can actually make I talk about our personal experience and dip into the expertise of over 40,000 other RV owners.

Let’s get started. So, Is renting out your RV profitable?

You make between $1000 and $3500 a month renting out your RV in the camping season. Many owners pay off their rigs in an average of three years. The rest is profit after that.

My family loves taking trips in our RV travel trailer. The freedom and flexibility it offers are second-to-none, especially with a large family like ours. The memories we have of past trips and our dreams for future trips truly keep us inspired.

So, I decided to try renting out our travel trailer on Outdoorsy and RVezy . Since then, I have learned so much about the RV rental business.

I am an active member of a huge RV owners’ group online. With over 11,000 members, it is a robust source of support and education. It was there that I learned how to run the most profitable RV rental business and avoid the downfalls.

What are the most profitable RVs to rent out?

Camper vans, Class C motorhomes, and small to medium-sized travel trailers that are 2 to 10 years old make the most money.

My 35-foot bunkhouse travel trailer sleeps nine. I purchased it for $14,000 and it rents for $125 a night from early spring to late fall. On average, I have bookings for 10-20 days per month. I can tell you – that an extra $1,250 to $2,500 every month is always welcome.

I have heard from many other RV owners that they enjoyed the easy income potential of renting their RV so much that they added two or three new rigs to their fleet!

In fact, we gathered information from RV owners renting on the peer-to-peer network Outdoorsy and RVezy to find out how much you could make with each type of RV. In addition, I interviewed RVe z y to get the best tips for making the most money renting out your RV.

And of course, we’ll answer the biggest question you may have about renting out your RV – how and where to list it.

What is the Most Profitable RV To Rent Out?

A 20 – 30 foot Class C motorhome or travel trailer that sleeps 4 to 8 people, is in excellent condition and 5 to 10 years old is the most lucrative RV rental for you as an owner. A camper that is a couple of years old has already lost value due to depreciation but still has low maintenance costs.

Having a type and style of RV that is in demand will make your new business profitable very quickly. Just by chance, my travel trailer happened to be very popular. The nice amenities, the bunkhouse in the back, and the separate room are features that many renters seek.

Here are the best RVs that will rent out all summer long.

Class C Motorhome

Class C motorhomes are the basic RV that you think about when renting an RV. Average length, 25 – 30 foot Class C motorhomes rent extremely well. The size is short enough to maneuver and fit in many campsites but large enough for a family to be very comfortable.

Camper vans are in high demand because they are built on a van chassis and are by far the easiest RV to drive. These are perfect for couples and small families that want flexibility during their road trips.

Camper vans are also quite popular due to their coolness factor. People are just excited to experience #VanLife!

Small or Mini Travel Trailers

Small R-Pods, pop-ups, and other lightweight towable travel trailers are all the rage. Since the small RVs can be towed with an SUV or light truck, they are highly desirable. People also like that they can have and use their own vehicle for side trips once they arrive at the campsite.

The benefit to you, the owner, of renting out a travel trailer is that there is no vehicle maintenance and no depreciation due to mileage. They are also much cheaper to purchase. You can buy a travel trailer at a fraction of the cost of a motorhome but still rent it out for over $100 a night.

Of course, the downside is the risk of an inexperienced driver towing your vehicle. You can avoid this issue by offering delivery and set up (and make extra money in the process!)

Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Larger travel trailers are rented frequently by families and groups that want to camp together. The lighter travel trailers that can be towed by a half-ton truck will rent the best. However, I can say that my 35-foot travel trailer requires more than a half-ton truck, it is still quite popular.

For people who rent out a large camper, an additional service you might consider offering is delivery to the campsite. I have received requests to deliver all over the state of Colorado.

These RVs Should Never Be Used as Rentals

There are some types of RVs that make poor rentals. This can be due to a high purchase price vs low-income potential or to a greater potential for damage. After connecting with thousands of RV business owners and getting input on the best and worst RV rentals, here is what I’ve learned about RVs to avoid if you plan to do rentals.

Expandable RVs and Travel Trailers with Canvas Sides

Travel trailers that expand with canvas sides are popular rentals. However, the canvas is very expensive to repair when damaged. The units are relatively cheap to buy but the maintenance could be very high.

I regularly see folks ask on the RV forum if they should add a pop-up to their RV fleet – and the answer is always a resounding no.

New Luxurious Motorhomes

A brand new motorhome depreciates quickly due to mileage. Although some people will be willing to pay a premium to take a vacation in a luxurious motorhome, this will not be a popular model. People who don’t regularly drive an RV don’t usually want to practice on one that’s quite so pricey.

Old Motorhomes

People generally want to rent the nicest thing they can afford and an older motorhome with a broken and worn-out interior will get negative reviews. In fact, some RV rental platforms only insure RVs up to 10 years old. On Outdoorsy, If your RV is older than 10 years, you must secure your own commercial insurance . RVezy adds an additional layer of screening for RVs older than 20 years.

Where to List Your RV for Rent

The easiest way to get started in the RV rental business is to list your RV on a sharing economy website. I have experience using Outdoorsy , RVShare, and RVEzy . All are free to list your RV and you do not have to commit to renting to anyone you do not approve. So I keep an active listing on all 3 platforms.

Use eye-catching pictures.

The profile picture of your RV listing should be shot somewhere scenic that the renter can imagine themselves camping and having a great time. Many people use a picture of their own family at a campground to add that personal touch. A great picture can be inspiring.

But because potential renters are also looking to inspect the merchandise, it’s helpful to include the entire outside of your camper in the image. Then, add additional pictures of your RV from the inside to highlight all of the listed features.

Use an Enticing Description

A picture is worth a thousand words, but the words in your listing are what close the deal after the pictures hook a potential customer. Aim for a description that is interesting and unique yet also includes all of the amenities and features of your RV. This will help to catch people’s attention. Your description should allow them to see themselves having a great time on their vacation.

Offer Delivery and Set Up

Delivery and setup is a great service to offer because many people want the exciting experience of camping without all of the work. When I first listed my trailer for rent, I had 10 requests for delivery within the first month.

If you’re willing to put in the time and effort to deliver and set up your RV, you will get more renters, earn more money, and reduce the risk of an inexperienced driver damaging your camper.

Many people charge a flat delivery fee of $50-$100 within 25 to 100 miles. You could also charge by the mile at a rate of $1 to $3 a mile.

One tip that Matt at RVEzy gave me about delivery is to make sure that the commercial insurance covers your delivering the trailer. Your personal insurance may not cover your RV if you are delivering it for a rental purpose. RVezy insurance will cover you the owner, during delivery in case you were to get in an accident.

Final Thoughts on Whether an RV Rental Business Is Profitable

An RV rental business is lucrative, and starting one is quick and easy. I have found this to be a much better side hustle than flipping campers.

If you are looking for an RV for sale or already own one, renting it out can help you make your payments and even bring in some extra income. Most people earn between $1000 and $3000 a month in peak season. I have been able to make at least $1500 a month on an older travel trailer.

You say that vintage rentals are a good investment, but then that your rv shouldn’t be over 10 years old. Can you explain?

Vintage rentals have an appeal to some but they must be in great condition and a type in demand, such as airstream. If you have a vintage camper, Outdoorsy or RVezy offer insurance. However, for most new business owners, the best approach is to have an RV under 10 years old.

Me and my wife are thinking about keeping our old travel trailer when we soon upgrade to a bigger one. Yes, I think it would be profitable depending on the storage costs but you would need to look at all the costs associated with keeping the RV. Used RVs tend to have a poor trade-in value, so renting out is a good option. The delivery of your RV would depend on your work schedule. You could offer delivery in the afternoon when you are off work.

Renting Out Your Van, Trailer, or RV: Big Money or Big Pain?

Don’t Let Your Camping Machine Sit Idle

In 2020, Kampgrounds of America (KOA) reported that campers and non-campers alike ranked camping as the safest type of lodging while traveling. Fifty-six percent of leisure travelers, 63% of campers, and 49% of prospective campers felt camping was safer than other forms of travel accommodations.

Not only are camping and RV travel quite safe in pandemic times, but they can also be super affordable. When you factor in skyrocketing rental car prices, a home on wheels for $200 per night is seriously compelling.

On average, RV owners in the U.S. log about 5,000 miles annually. If you have limited vacation days, your rig is likely stagnant 48-plus weeks of the year. That means it’s sitting idle most of the time when it could be on an adventure and bringing in real cash for you — if you’re into a little side hustle.

OK, maybe a lot of side hustle. I learned quickly that this isn’t easy money.

P2P Rental Basics

In a perfect world, this would be easy: Hand over your keys, wave goodbye for a few days, profit!

In the real world, there are so very many pitfalls. What if your renter had their license revoked? What if they set the kitchen on fire? What happens when their flight is delayed, and they can’t pick up the RV at the scheduled time? And when you fail to tighten the lug nuts, what happens if they decide to sue you?

Suddenly you realize that, as with all enterprises, there’s real work and risk involved. Fortunately, the aforementioned RV rental facilitators can make this much easier.

How much easier depends on what model you choose — and we’ll guide you to the choice that works for you.

Choosing a Rental Model

For a totally hands-off experience, you can follow the consignment route with an outfit like Northwest Adventure Rentals . The company manages not only the turnover and customer interaction but also the cleaning, vehicle maintenance, and more. You hand over the keys, and they take care of the rest. They also take the biggest cut — a whopping 40-60% of the rental income.

If you’re willing to do some of the work yourself, consider the “peer-to-peer” or “Airbnb” model. Peer-to-peer models offer the best income, with commissions varying from 15% to 25%.

Some companies you’ve likely already heard of include Outdoorsy and RVshare . These are big players with tens of thousands of wheels in their fleets. They connect you directly with potential renters, and you can choose whom to work with.

After the connection, all the work is on you. You’ll have to build your own listing profile (consider hiring a professional photographer) and screen your renters diligently. Your RV will have to be outfitted with all required amenities and be filled with fuel and cleaned for every renter.

Smaller boutique P2P models such as GoCamp offer a bit more service. They hold your hand throughout the entire process to make sure your listing has dynamite photos and your customers walk away happy.

While this can be a nice option, GoCamp is currently limited to a few Western cities and only accepts class B RVs (van-sized). Also of concern, you might not get the leads needed to be successful, as smaller websites generally see fewer visitors. GoCamp is an exception, however, as it has cross-listing agreements with Outdoorsy and RVshare.

Renter Screening

At a minimum, all P2P services conduct a driver’s license check. Any renter with multiple traffic violations, DUIs, etc. will be flagged. That doesn’t mean you’re always getting a solid driver, but it’s a good start. As with most rental vehicles, drivers must be 25 years or older to apply.

You might have second thoughts about handing the key of your $80,000 toy to a total stranger, but that’s the name of the game. Fortunately, all these rental groups offer solid insurance as part of their services.

First is up to $1 million in liability if a renter files a lawsuit against you. Second is protection for your vehicle; in this case, the renter takes responsibility for the duration of the trip. They can choose how much coverage they want during checkout.

Typical RV insurance only covers the vehicle while it’s in your possession. Renters’ insurance takes effect as soon as you hand over the keys. Bigger sites such as Outdoorsy and RVezy utilize a cellphone app to make the vehicle damage check process painless. Owners and renters can digitally sign an agreement before a trip starts.

Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance options are available for renters to purchase at their discretion. In some cases, you can require renters to select this option. Beyond that, you, as the owner, are responsible for the integrity and roadworthiness of your vehicle.

Maximizing Income

Add-on items and services allow you to maximize your profits. If you have a couple of surfboards that don’t get used often, you can add them as an option for a daily fee. Bikes, paddleboards, and rack systems are all popular side orders for an RV adventure. Some sites will also allow you to profit from airport pickup and dropoff if you’re willing.

Choosing a Rental Company

So now you know the risks and rewards, which company is right for you? The short answer is that you can’t go too wrong. The RV rental industry is mature, and the cream has risen to the top.

We feel confident recommending any of these RV rental networks. The decision depends on which trade-offs work for you. First, let’s narrow down the options based on the type of RV you have.

We focused on data and hard numbers for comparison. We also called each service just to make sure you can speak to a human on the other end and quizzed them about crucial details. Here’s a quick rundown:

Outdoorsy is the biggest fish in the pond. Like Airbnb, prospective renters can message first or just request to book; a deposit is required to formally request a booking. Outdoorsy’s app also features messaging, pre-departure photos and claims, and a digital manual about the vehicle.

Similar to RVezy, Outdoorsy takes 20% off the top of all fees. Older vehicles, including vintage RVs, are encouraged to list. They also have complimentary listing advisors that will help you improve your listing.

The next largest is RVshare. Besides taking a larger cut (25%), RVshare is very similar to Outdoorsy. It also offers one-on-one consultations with an advisor to help perfect your listing.

RVshare doesn’t offer a cellphone app but has a robust web interface .

RVezy accepts all styles of RVs — classes A, B, and C as well as trailers. Motorized RVs must be newer than 20 years old (25 years for travel trailers). The company takes 20% off the top of all bookings, cleanings, add-ons, and fees.

Its app is solid and allows for easy, secure communication between the renter and owner. The app also facilitates the pre-ride checkout and claims process.

Strangely, by default, renters are not required to buy supplemental insurance. If you go with RVezy, make sure you know to select that accordingly.

GoCamp only allows class B RVs, but they can be any age. They target the #vanlife crowd and operate in a handful of cities in the Western U.S.

GoCamp returns the most to you with a 20% commission that only applies to the base rate (not cleaning or add-on fees). If you list more than one van, that drops to 15%.

GoCamp effectively curates your post during the process. If you’re not handy with photos, the company offers to send your van out with a photographer in exchange for a night of rental. The word “curated” could not be more appropriate here; it’s a very polished brand.

GoCamp also manages interactions with potential renters before introducing those renters to you. This keeps you from being barraged with simple FAQs. One downside is that most requests to change your calendar or otherwise manage your listing require emails, as there’s no GoCamp app yet.

What Worked for Me

I did a ton of research. I knew I wanted the income of the P2P model but with as little work as possible. In the end, GoCamp was an easy choice. I grilled its coordinator for at least an hour (she is terrifically patient) before signing up.

The onboarding process is lengthy, with many online forms that build your listing page and a “road ready” manual. It’s a few hours, but it’s time well spent to attract renters and set them up for success.

My van, Milo, currently rents for about $200 per night. I also offer surf, paddleboard, and bike racks as optional add-ons to maximize my profits and keep the dust off of some of the gear in my outdoor adventure quiver.

I was only able to get my rental up and running for the last 6 weeks of summer, but my calendar filled up almost immediately. I would estimate that my take was around $3,000 per month for July and August. In the offseason, I’m guessing that will drop to $2,000 per month or less when the snow hits.

I’ve had mostly good renters — a few missing and broken items are just the nature of the business. If you’re the type who fawns over your RV like a pet, this is not the side gig for you.

Investment: Money, Time, Energy

Here at GearJunkie, we live the experience, and so as a part of reporting on P2P RVs, I bought and listed my own RV.

I loved the sensible layout and practicality of the classic VW Westfalia style, but the newest “westy” eurovans are now 20 years old! Fortunately, I spotted a 2016 Mercedes Metris conversion that’s the same layout but much newer. The only problem is that it was in Austin, and I live in Portland.

After some back-and-forth with the owner, I booked a ticket to Texas and handed over $38,000 cash, the first purchase for my van rental company “Avantura” (Croatian for “adventure”!).

I had the next 2,473 miles to figure out all the systems on my new Mercedes. I realized I desperately needed a stool to reach the upper bunk and fitted a cover for a very noisy overhead vent. I kept a journal as I figured things out, which would turn into a manual for my renters.

By the time I got back to Oregon, I’d spent hours figuring out how I wanted to outfit Milo. I quickly dumped another $3,000 into upgrades, springing for a modern lithium battery system from Dakota Lithium . I wanted my renters to be able to travel for days without worrying about power.

How Much Is Your Time Worth?

While you might consider this “passive income,” it’s not without its costs. Owners are responsible for cleaning and re-outfitting vans before delivery. Depending on the program, you might be doing a lot of laundry and dishes between rentals, not to mention washing and cleaning your RV.

Propane and gas refills also eat away at your time. For some, a few hours to turn over a van will be well worth the income — just don’t discount the effort required.

It’s also important to budget your time for meeting with renters when they arrive and going over all the various RV systems and features so they know how to use them correctly. Plan to spend at least 30-45 minutes each time. You don’t want to risk a propane fire or sewage surprise because someone didn’t close the right valve.

Think about Airbnb-ing an apartment and renting a car at the same time — you get all the problems combined. It’s a lot to clean and turn over an RV, especially when you adopt the full-service model providing linens, cookware, headlamps, etc. There are so many little things to check. Are the batteries charged? Did they leave the chairs filthy?

It helps to put a system in place and have checklists, but the amount of work is not trivial.

Is It Worth It?

I’m an engineer — so naturally, I have a spreadsheet that accounts for upfront costs, maintenance, depreciation, business registration, and even budgeting my time. On paper, so far, I’m looking great!

It’s amazing to think that with the income I’m bringing in, Milo will be paid for by the end of next summer … but I might not last that long.

The impact on my personal life and being at the whim of renters is a burden. I made the mistake of asking my wife to clean the van and hand off the keys while I went sailing in the San Juans for a week. She called in tears after the detailer I’d scheduled didn’t show up, and the van’s cabinets wouldn’t open just hours before a renter was scheduled to arrive. Yes, there may be relationship costs!

On the other hand, it’s been tremendously gratifying enabling people’s adventures and dreams. I really enjoy sending people away with the keys. Plus, long-term rentals make for more profit with far less work. I have a renter in October taking the keys for 2 weeks, netting me $2,600.

So the jury is still out! If you already own an RV, the potential revenue is compelling. But I wouldn’t necessarily recommend buying a vehicle just for the side income.

For us, the upside of having a fully kitted van for our own adventures is well worth it. I reserve a weekend with Milo for personal trips every couple of months. When you pop the top at the beach and crack open a beer after surfing, it’s all worthwhile.

Did you see "Barbie" and think, "I would love to live in a life-sized doll house?"

Well, what about a Polly Pocket house? Would that work?

Airbnb partnered up with Mattel to create a real-life scale version of the Polly Pocket Slumber Party Fun compact in Massachusetts for Airbnb users to rent, according to an Airbnb press release.

"While Polly is away on an epic adventure celebrating her 35th birthday, guests can stay in her two-story pad and explore the toy life—where a pocket full of nostalgia awaits," the press release said.

Is the Polly Pocket Airbnb real?

Yes, it is.

The 42-foot-tall life-sized recreation of the clamshell house can be found in Littleton, Massachusetts.

"Guests can request to book one of three one-night stays occurring September 12 to 14 for four guests each, at $89 per person," the press release said.

Guests will be able to try on Polly Pocket-themed accessories, clothes and raid her fridge for a late-night snack.

The press release said that interested parties can request to book a one-night stay starting August 21 at 9 a.m. at airbnb.com/pollypocket through August 29 at 2:59 a.m., which is when request periods close.

According to Airbnb, guests are responsible for getting to and from Littleton. Travel expenses are not included.

You may remember last week we reported Asda was embarking on a £30m "reset" after a decline in sales and market share - and now we have more details.

Michael Gleeson, the retailer's finance chief, said it was investing heavily into improving its store standards, product availability and staffing hours in order to address concerns over customers' shopping experience.

One particular area of focus is cleanliness of stores since the break with Walmart over the last few years.

"From time to time it's right to stand back and reassess," Mr Gleeson told The Grocer.

On the question of cleanliness dipping, he added: "It does partly reflect the level and scale of change the company is going through in terms of separation.

"We recognise it's the right thing to do to put those hours in."

Last month's industry data from Kantar found that Asda had 12.7% of the UK grocery market over the three months to 7 July, shrinking from a 13.6% share of the market a year earlier.

Major rivals including Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons all gained customers, according to the research.

After a wobbly week on the global stock markets, the Footsie appears to be on the up this Friday.

The FTSE 100 has gained 0.3% in early trading, while the FTSE 250 has risen more than 0.5%.

Ladbrokes owner Entain Plc is still doing well after it upped its forecast for the year yesterday following a betting boom on the Euros and Premier League.

Following gains on Thursday, the company is up another 4% on Friday, making it one of the top gainers.

Leading investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown is another riser, with its shares climbing more than 2%.

It comes after the company initially agreed to a £5.44bn takeover from a consortium led by CVC Capital Partners, which includes the Abu Dhabi wealth fund.

At the other end of the scale is British multinational healthcare firm Haleon, which dipped by 0.8% in early trading, and Tesco, which slipped by 0.7%.

Investor jitters over Tesco come after Asda reported a 5.3% drop in second quarter like-for-like sales on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the recovery of oil is marching on this morning following falls last week.

A barrel of the benchmark Brent crude is currently priced at $79 (£62), up from $78 (£61) this time yesterday.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.28 US or €1.17 this morning, a slight rise from yesterday.

A fifth of house hunters spend less than 20 minutes looking at a home before deciding to make an offer, according to a new survey.

Zoopla also found viewers were more likely to focus on artwork and furniture than structural features - and more than one in 10 people tested out the owner's bed and sofa.

The average time for looking around a property before settling on buying it was about 49 minutes, Zoopla said, drawing on data calculated from people who have attended viewings in the past five years.

Nosy viewers

Some worrying stats for people offering their house out to viewings...

A quarter of people admitted to looking at pictures of the family that live there, while 24% checked out their technology.

Nearly two-fifths admired their furniture - and one in seven peeked into drawers and cabinets.

Meanwhile, 13% tested how comfortable the owner's bed and sofa are, according to the survey carried out by Mortar Research in June.

What are people looking at?

Zoopla also trialled eye-tracking technology to indicate where house hunters focus their attention during a viewing.

This experiment involved five people wearing eye-tracking glasses during viewings.

The property website said that people spent just 34 seconds viewing a bedroom, and just over a minute in the kitchen.

The property website also said the research indicated that people's attention was captured by items that would no longer be there if they moved in.

And when it comes to the really important stuff, the research showed people did not tend to look at radiators for more than half a second in any room.

The home's structure - including flooring and ceilings - generated 38% of the share of attention, with cosmetics and furnishings earning 54% and fixtures receiving 8%, according to the research.

What are the easiest ways to increase the value of your home, without splashing out on an extension or a new kitchen?

Property solicitors at Jones Whyte reveal five tips on how to add value without hurting your wallet...

"The key is to think like a buyer and make improvements that you would look for when buying a house for yourself," they say.

"First impressions matter, and improving the exterior of your home is one of the most cost-effective ways to boost its value," the experts said.

This could include mowing the grass, trimming hedges and removing weeds.

"A fresh coat of paint on the front door is also a cheap yet effective way of making your home look more appealing."

This can be done for as little as £50 if you do it yourself.

Outdoor lighting can also make a difference.

"Depending on the look you're going for, you can find exterior lights for as little as £15."

2/ Small, smart upgrades

In the kitchen, consider giving the cupboards a coat of paint, or even replacing their handles.

"Installing a new backsplash can also contribute to giving the kitchen a fresh new look."

In the bathroom, you can replace old lighting fixtures, re-caulk the tub, or add a new shower curtain and rug.

"A clean, updated bathroom is always a huge selling point for any property and these small upgrades can have a big impact."

3/ Energy efficiency

Energy-efficient homes are increasingly attractive to buyers due to potential long-term savings.

One study says 35% of prospective buyers are more likely to make an offer on a home with eco-minded installations.

You could replace iridescent light bulbs with LEDs, install a smart thermostat, and seal any gaps around windows or doors to improve insulation.

"If your budget is slightly higher, consider investing in extra insulation or a more efficient heating system."

4/ Storage solutions

"By making use of every corner of your home, you can create a modern and less cluttered feel that will appeal to buyers," the experts say.

Install shelves in small spaces, or take advantage of vertical space in smaller rooms by using taller bookshelves and storage units.

With a slightly higher budget, you can add built-in furniture and storage around the house, starting from a few hundred pounds.

5/ Home staging

"Home staging is an effective way of presenting a property to appeal to a wide audience of potential buyers, and there are many budget-friendly ways it can be done."

Try to create a spacious, open feel by moving furniture around.

"Adding subtle accessories such as artwork or greenery will add warmth and style to your home and by keeping it simple and cohesive, you can increase appeal without overwhelming the space."

The mortgage market has had a full week to digest last Thursday's interest rate cut - and its response has been good news for borrowers.

Money blog regular expert David Hollingworth, from L&C Mortgages , says the downward trend of previous weeks has continued but "the difference this week is that the new rates are dipping to lower levels than we have seen for months".

He said expectations of a second cut this year had grown.

"That helps to reduce the cost of funds for mortgage lenders and the competitive nature of the mortgage market means that lenders have wasted no time in bringing some new barnstorming rates to the market."

We're now seeing headline rates below 4% from the likes of HSBC, Barclays and NatWest, with Barclays the current leader with a five-year fix at 3.84% to 60% LTV with a £899 fee.

Just this morning, Halifax and Coventry went live with sub 4% rates.

What's next?

David said: "I'd expect to see more lenders looking to keep up, so we should see more changes to come.

"The lowest rates have been targeted at homebuyers so those looking to remortgage may unfortunately find that rates are a touch higher but nonetheless it's a brighter outlook.

"It may also help to build activity in the housing market where understandably some put buying decisions on hold when rates leapt."

Another development to keep an eye on is a potential recession in the US. Concern about this - following disappointing jobs data - was a key reason for the stock market sell off this week.

A recession would prompt the US Fed to cut interest rates much quicker than expected to try to stimulate the economy - and, as we have discussed in Money many times, central banks don't like to be too far apart on rates as it has knock-on impacts on the strength of a currency. Therefore, a US recession could actually be good news for anyone hoping for lower rates in the UK.

This week, Moneyfacts has honed in on deals on offer for landlords, or potential landlords.

"Away from interest rates, the overall profitability of investing in a buy-to-let property remains under scrutiny," said the comparison site's Rachel Springall.

"This week there have been reports on why the buy-to-let market remains a challenge for existing and new landlords. According to analysis of HMRC data, purchases of buy-to-let properties and second homes have fallen to their lowest levels since 2016."

EasyJet is launching a new cabin crew recruitment drive aimed at the over-50s and people wanting to change their minds about retirement.

The campaign, called Returnships, follows research suggesting that three in four people over the age of 50 believed this was the perfect time for a new career.

Training taster sessions will be offered at EasyJet's London Gatwick cabin crew training centre.

Previous recruitment campaigns have led to a big increase in new staff over the age of 50 and 60.

New research by the airline among 2,000 over-50s showed that half have considered a new career.

Most respondents believed their age would stop them being accepted for a cabin crew job and half mistakenly believed the role would mean being away from home for long periods of time.

The campaign has been launched ahead of the airline's annual recruitment drive this month, with hundreds of cabin crew jobs available for 2025.

Barclays has become the latest bank to lift its cap on top bonuses in the UK.

The lender's senior bankers will now be able to earn payouts of up to 10 times their base salary, up from a two-to-one ratio previously imposed by the EU in 2014 when the UK was a member, according to an internal memo seen by news agency Reuters.

A spokesperson for the bank said: "The revised bonus cap will not alter the way Barclays sets its incentive pool, which is based on overall Group performance.

"It will allow us greater flexibility to differentiate individual bonuses within a small and defined group of colleagues."

Banks including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have already taken similar action, in moves that were first revealed by Sky News.

Cruise ships which could be eight times the size of the Titanic will be in service from 2050 amid booming demand for holidays afloat, according to a study.

The campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E) found the world's biggest cruise ships were now twice as big as they were in 2000.

If the current growth rate were to continue, the biggest vessels in 2050 would be almost eight times bigger than the Titanic and carry nearly 11,000 passengers, the study said.

The company also found the number of ships has increased more than twenty-fold from only 21 ships in 1970 to 515 vessels today.

As a result of such rapid growth, T&E warned these floating cities "will emit more greenhouse gases and pollutants than ever before".

It has therefore made a number of policy recommendations it believes will help, including a €50 tax on a typical cruise journey ticket which would bring in €1.6bn globally (cruise ships are currently exempt from fuel duties as well as most corporate and consumer taxes).

In its study, the campaign group also found Southampton is the busiest cruise ship port in the UK and ranks seventh for the most sulfur oxide air pollution coming from cruise ships in Europe.

In May, T&E found that Southampton suffers the highest levels of ship-produced emissions of nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter of any port in the UK - more than half of this was produced by just 46 cruise ships calling at the port.

Jonathan Hood, UK sustainable shipping manager at T&E, said: "With today's cruise ships making the Titanic look like somebody's private yacht, the question is - how much bigger can these giants get? The cruise business is the fastest growing tourism sector and its emissions are spiralling out of control."

Currently, the world's largest cruise ship is Royal Caribbean Group's Icon of the Seas, which is 1,197ft- long and boasts 20 decks.

The ship can house a maximum of 7,600 passengers.

April Mortgages has announced it is cutting interest rates on its range of fixed rate mortgages.

Rates across the mortgage lender's range of five, 10 and 15-year fixed rate mortgages have been cut by up to 0.10 basis points.

As a result, rates start at 4.80% for the five-year fix, at 4.85% for the 10-year fix and at 4.95% for the 15-year fixed rate product.

"These really are worthy of strong consideration now," Simon Bridland, director at the mortgage broker Release Freedom, told Newspage.

"The security of a longer term deal certainly isn't for everyone, especially those used to being offered the standard two to five year terms with the ability to regularly shop around. But perhaps they should take a look at April, given the flexibility they have on redemption penalties."

James Pagan, director of product and portfolio management at April Mortgages, said the lender was "determined to bring true peace of mind to the nation's mortgage borrowers and brokers", and these "rate reductions make the prospect of securing a longer-term fixed rate even more attractive".

He said: "We know that these products can make a real difference to borrowers, and are committed to reaching as many as possible by working closely with brokers."

April Mortgages is a UK subsidiary of the Dutch asset manager DMFCO.
