Bhuj, the westernmost city of India, is a treasure trove of heritage and culture. Like few other towns, which have escaped the tourist invasion in India, Bhuj offers to the traveler hospitality hitherto unseen in modern times. Bhuj is known for its small, meandering streets, palaces and temples. It also has the oldest museum in the state of Gujarat. Bhuj is located in the westernmost part of the state of Gujarat, in the western region of India. It is around 300 km from Ahmedabad, the state capital. It is near the Gulf of Kutch, a part of the Arabian Sea. Low hills overlook the city of Bhuj. Though Bhuj is near the coast, yet its climate is hot. It is because of its proximity to the Great Rann of Kutch to its north and the Small Rann to its west, which are vast, sandy, and dry salt flats. Bhuj experiences hot summers (April-June) and mild winters (October-February). It is lashed by southwestern monsoons in the months of June-August.

A local ruler Maharao Hamir founded the city of Bhuj in 1510. In 1549 Rao Khengarji I, another local ruler, made Bhuj his capital. It remained an independent princely state during the rule of the British in India and became a part of India, when it gained independence in 1947.

Aina Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors (Old Palace), surrounded by a small, fortified courtyard built in the 18th century, is located in the old part of the city. It is then served on a plate with added toppings of chutney and alu-jhuri bhaja. You can find Dabeli at street food vendors and local eateries in the city.

Located near the Ramkund step well, the temple’s primary deity is NarnarayanDev and Harikrishna Maharaj. The place of worship was built in 1823 by the founder of SwaminarayanSampraday, Swaminarayan himself. Today, devotees gather to view the personal items of the founder which are displayed in the temple premises.

One of the most popular religious sites in Bhuj is the Dattatreya Temple, featuring a three-headed idol depicting the three Hindu gods – Lord Brahma, the Creator; Lord Vishnu, the Preserver; and Lord Shiva, the Destroyer. The rare idol housed in this 400-year-old temple manages to attract thousands of devotees from across the country.

The former residence of the Royal Family of Bhuj, the palace remained under the kingship till the last king, Madan Singh, died in 1991. Since the death of the king, the palace has been converted into a museum displaying royal artifacts such as paintings and rare photographs of the family. While at the palace, check the palace ground which is rich with medicinal plants and visited by migratory birds.

For a traditional museum experience in Bhuj, head to the Kutch Museum near the Hamirsar Lake. Dating back to 1884, the museum is one of the oldest in the state, built to commemorate the wedding of MaharaoKhengarji III. The collections displayed include rare pieces of royal paintings, musical instruments and coins from the 19th century. It is also famed to have the largest collection of Kshatrapa inscriptions dating back to the 1st century AD. The museum displays also include rare Kutch script inscriptions which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The Kutch Museum is also the first museum in the country to go online in 2010.

Also known as the Hanging Garden, Hill Garden of Bhuj is located atop a hill and spread across around 22 acres of land. The chief garden attraction is the Blue Whale skeleton which is around 85 feet long. Be sure to take your camera along to capture wonderful snaps

A number of Indian movies, including ‘Refugee’, have captured this white desert in a lens. This vast desert is considered one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the country and must be visited on a moonlit night. Just remember that the Rann is very close to the India-Pakistan border; hence, it is a sensitive area and requires permission for entrance.

Located away from Bhuj, you might need to book transportation to reach the famous Haida Natural Park. But remember that it is the world’s largest known flamingo colony departure point, which makes it one of the most visited destinations for bird watching enthusiasts. The park has a lake called Jamkundaliya, where more than half a million flamingos gather every year during the migratory months of October to March.

Black Hills is the highest point in the region of Kutch, a few kilometres away from Bhuj. An interesting destination as a whole, the Black Hills allows the tourists to view the Great Rann merging into the horizon. Also, this is very close to the Indian border shared with Pakistan.

Bhujioy Hill:  One of the many forts that dot the city of Bhuj, Bhujiyo Hill was made to fortify its boundaries and protect the city from invaders. A magnificent piece of history waits to be explored, and one must not miss the panoramic view of the city from the fort walls.

Chhatardi:  Located within a short walking distance from the landmark Hamirsar Lake, Chhatardi (cenotaphs) is a popular tourist attraction. Aaina Mahal:  The lakeside location makes AainaMahal an attractive destination in Bhuj. Literally meaning the ‘Hall of Mirrors’, the Mahal or the palace was built in mid-18th century. It was designed by Ram Singh Malam, an artisan who merged the local architectural style with the Indo-European style to create the mirror hall. While viewing the mirror interiors, also check the paintings which are exhibited in the hallway.

Situated at the bending point of River Macchu in Gujarat, Wankaner is a princely town known for its royal lineage and heritage monuments. Less than 100 km away from Bhuj, this sanctuary is spread over an area of about 7505.22 sq. km. in the Kutch District of Gujarat. This wildlife sanctuary is considered as one of the largest seasonal saline wetland areas. It has a water depth that ranges between 0.5 to 1.5 m and preserves various species of flamingo birds. Also sight other species such as the greater flamingo, Indian porcupine, spiny tailed lizard, black-necked storks, wild ass and Indian cormorant. The best time to visit this sanctuary is during the months of winters.

Tourists can also see around 184 distinct species of birds in this sanctuary including waterfowl, black partridge, houbara bustard, lesser florican and great Indian bustard.
