The Ride NYC: More Than a Bus Tour
Looking for a new and exciting way to see Times Square? The Ride NYC is more than a bus tour, it’s an entire performance. We love this unique way to interact with New York City while seeing the sites.
For sightseeing with a twist, âThe Rideâ and âThe Tourâ boast facts, comedy and performances from New York Cityâs busy streets while riding sideways in a âKnight-Rideresqueâ bus.
Yes, sidewaysâin a vehicle fitted with stadium style theater seating looking out the virtually all-glass side of the bus. As an audience member, youâll see the sights. You also, in effect, become one of them for anyone choosing to watch or photograph you looking outwards.
Thereâs no doubt these New York City attractions have âtouristâ written all over them. That doesn’t mean they’re not fun! For a family looking to cover a lot of ground it’s a great option. Plus, the kids canât complain their feet are hurting. âThe Ride,â and âThe Tourâ offer a new type of sightseeing. They run rain or shine and cost less than a Broadway show.
Sights Seen on The Ride in Times Square and Midtown
Billed as âpart tour, part entertainment,â by its creators, The Ride NYC starts off in the heart of Times Square. Here you’ll meet your tour guides or âride operatives,â on the bus.
Part scripted, part improvised, Scott and Jackie, our guides, made the crowd feel right at home. Even while explaining the state-of-the-art bus technology, they were adeptly commenting on people inside and outside of the bus. My husband, or as we called him, our photographer was quickly pointed out by Scott as âa New Yorker who felt he was too good for sidewalks”, while standing outside in the middle of the street.
We immediately learned Times Square in New York is the number one tourist destination in the United States. Did you know the entire Empire Theater building was actually picked up and moved 170 feet to preserve it? As we gleaned the details, âThe Rideâ (the name of the “talking” bus) showed us historical photos on multiple screens of the building as it was moved.
Heading through Times Square, hearing trivia about New Years Eve ball drop, we encountered one man who was still celebrating.
The Ride NYC Bus Tour Spoiler Alert
In the show vein, and without giving all the details, riders encounter a number of performers during The Ride . From a reveler, to a dancer, a la Fred Astaire (this modernized version finishes with a selfie), to a delivery man whoâs not, youâre never quite sure which of the people you see on the street may turn out to be one of the 5-7 performers who are part of the interactive show.
You may find yourself singing a song from the musical, â42 nd Street,â or have a chance to take âThe Rideâ quiz, where youâll be asked general knowledge questions about New York City and its attractions. Youâll have a chance to learn both real facts and movie facts about the Chrysler Building (and others), enjoy the architecture of the Mobil Building, and will learn the main branch of the New York Public Library has more than 20 million books inside.
Youâll discover that Bryant Park offers free ping pong, free juggling lessons, free yoga, and free films in the summertime, not to mention Thursday afternoonâs âBroadway in Bryant Parkâ where Broadway performers come out for free as well. And then thereâs the unexpected, because after all, itâs New York City.
Unexpected Bus Tour Features
To our surprise, and much to his, actor Alec Baldwin was stepping into a black car in the middle of the street (not far from 30 Rock) when our bus turned the corner. One astute guide pointed him out, and as he saw us, and we all saw him, he was faced with the reality of having to wave and acknowledge us allâtheater verite. Our guide Jackie pondered whether we should follow him, and answered her own question with a âNo, thatâs probably not a good idea as he may think weâre the paparazzi. And you know what he does to those guys.â
We learned soon afterwards, that one of the tourists on The Ride with us, was actually an actress from Australia who was in town after having finished shooting her scenes in âThe Avengers: Age of Ultron.â
Guides and performers improvised, interacted and reacted with those of us on The Ride as well as those on the streets. We finished The Ride with a rousing karaoke version of âNew York, New York.â
Different Options to See New York
There are differences between The Ride and The Tour that should be noted. The Ride NYC is more expensive (although you can find Groupons and other discounted tickets online for both). Also make sure to pick up tickets at their box office to save on âprocessing feesâ.
Your “ride on The Ride NYC is has comedic hosts. On The Tour you’ll have a licensed tour guide (although there are laughs to be had on both. The two options are also slightly different in length. The Ride NYC lasts 75 minutes vs 90 minutes for The Tour. The Ride takes you through midtown including Times Square , The Tour hits midtown and the Upper West Side . But on both trips, youâll have a unique learning experience geared to the entire family.
Plan to stay a little bit longer in New York City? We’ve rounded up some great NYC hotels for families .
One response
I hadn’t heard much about bus tours till today. I think it’s really cool how entertaining bus tours make sight seeing. I didn’t know they had performers at locations the buses go. I think that’s pretty creative! These would be fun to go on.

Fasten Your Seat Belts and Embrace the City
By Edward Rothstein
- Oct. 14, 2010
I donât think the woman who flashed us the other night on West 57th Street by lifting up her shirt was in the cast of the new bus ride/city tour/improv show/New York experience called âThe Ride.â But Iâm only guessing, because one business-suited passerby on 42nd Street was so intoxicated by the Broadway melodies being broadcast by our passing bus that he dropped his briefcase and leapt into a vaudeville tap-dance routine right out of a 1930s musical. And a late-night deliveryman on East 43rd Street was so caught up by the passing tourâs blaring hip-hop soundtrack that he spun and flipped into a virtuosic break-dance routine.
But unlike those examples, which âThe Rideâ had clearly set up in advance for its patrons, pretending, with a wink, that the tour was giving us a glimpse of eccentric New York street life, the flasher didnât seem to be performing a part, at least not one found in a script. She broke into laughter after her feat, watching the transparent-sided bus, with its three rows of stadium seats mounted sideways like a portable theater, filled with shrieking passengers.
In this, it turns out, she played right into the tourâs hands. So did we all. Because by the end of this 75-minute, 4.2-mile âRide,â which is making its debut this week, the guides who had led us from West 42nd Street up to Columbus Circle and back had the bus singing a karaoke version of Kander and Ebbâs âNew York, New York.â The words were flashed on the vehicleâs 40-some video screens, and the result was apparently heard on the street as we drove down Seventh Avenue. Crowds stopped, gawked and waved arms along with the singers, and applauded us as we applauded them. Whoâs onstage? Who isnât?
You donât really know what to make of âThe Rideâ at first. Itâs a commercial enterprise, created by the avant-garde theatrical entrepreneur Michael Counts , written by John Bobey (whose credits include late-night television comedy) and directed by Daniel Goldstein (whose credits include Broadway). Each night a crew of more than 60 technical people, street performers and tour-guide actors with improv-comedy experience tries to combine these diverse styles into an atypical tourist bus ride that costs $59 or $65, depending on the departure time. Plans are to run 364 days a year, with up to 156 rides each week.
These theatrical prices also accompany a bus meant to look theatrical: black and screaming âThe Rideâ in neon red along the side. Each bus costs $1.3 million. It is the tallest vehicle allowed by law; its audio systems emulate the punch of club sonics; and its cushioned 49 seats face the transparent side of the bus, allowing outsiders to see in, once its 40 video screens and 3,000 LED lights are illuminated. Three buses are touring now, making round trips from the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, where tickets are sold. A fourth is due soon, and in case of success, another four are planned. (There are also more elaborate hopes, for other cities and other countries.)
Forget the ride for a moment: all tour buses should be built this way; you miss one side of the street but get a huge panoramic view of the other. From an ordinary bus you canât sense the streetscapeâs expanse, but here, with windows stretching nearly the length of the bus, when we crossed Broadway at dusk, an hour before theater time, the city looked unearthly, a teeming throng of figures and glaring lights.
Strangely, though, as a tour, âThe Rideâ was least successful. As our two guides began their opening banter, we might have at first suspected that Scott really was educated in urban planning at Columbia University or that Jackie was a world traveler come home. But there are 18 such Scotts and Jackies, with the same names and script, giving these tours.
The banter incorporated a fairly lame conceit that âThe Rideâ has been under development since the end of World War II, that it has all the artificial intelligence of HAL from â2001: A Space Odysseyâ (with a more vigorous voice, which is heard throughout the tour) and that it is now embarking on âour biggest and boldest experiment to date, to answer the question: What makes New York ... New York  the pulsating capital of the world.â
Such pulsating is better left not talked about, but the guides were apparently supposed to get a subplot going involving Scottâs romantic interest in Jackie, while filling in travel time with improvised dialogue and âfun factsâ about the sights: the grime cleaned off the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal in 1998 was a thick layer of tar and nicotine. The Chrysler Buildingâs spire was secretly prepared and mounted so the result could surprise rivals as the worldâs tallest building  but then it was trumped by the Empire State Building.
The finest moments, though, had nothing to do with the cityâs dazzling stage sets  its buildings and avenues  but with the great crowds found within them, which is why âThe Rideâ is best taken when the streets are packed. Before the bus leaves Times Square, its voice draws attention to varied street characters (all in the tourâs employ). A man purchases three hot dogs, then suddenly starts juggling them. Pedestrians look on in shock, less at the accomplishment than at his daring to do something so pointless on jammed sidewalks. A man with a sequined top hat and party paraphernalia reserves his spot for New Yearâs Eve; he leaps around in celebration after the bus broadcasts a New Yearâs countdown. A sailor just home from World War II bends over to kiss a nurse, recreating the renowned 1945 Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph .
âThe Ride,â then, begins in pure silliness, much of it not too funny, but when that suited tap-dancer finishes his bit, the tour takes on a cinematic aura. This is, after all, how so many movies and Broadway shows work. While walking down a street, someone breaks into song or dance, just as strollers do here.
The urban dance scene of musicals is a genre of its own: first there is the surprise of the passersby, then the affectionate acknowledgment of the dance, and soon the whole streetscape is in on it (unless you are like Gene Kelly, singing in the rain in near isolation). Itâs the way of Broadway melody, the style of âWest Side Story.â And here, too, on âThe Ride,â you begin to watch the passersby look in shock and then pleasure at the theatrical indulgence of these people on the sidewalk; you almost expect them to join in.
Two singers dressed as Radio City ushers start their own duo; a ballerina dances in an illuminated tutu around Columbus Circle; a woman in front of Carnegie Hall sings an aria from âCarmen.â (âI just got off the bus from Iowa,â she explains. âIâm hoping if I sing outside here, Mr. Carnegie will pass by and discover me.â) Itâs all a version of â42nd Street.â
No one does join in, yet. But you are reminded that one aspect of New York streets is that strange stuff is not that unexpected. It isnât all that surprising to see someone singing on the street or dancing in the rain; it is only mildly surprising to see a woman lift her shirt.
The effect may have been much more intense in the 19th century when crowds created a different way of walking; the new urban citizen strolled the city and attended to its exotic sensations and shocks, an anonymous wanderer amid all the other wanderers.
Now the unexpected may even be uniting rather than isolating. It is a shared phenomenon, something to be talked about; it is even a matter of pride how much strangeness we have seen. Oddity creates community. I may be giving âThe Rideâ too much credit. But for all its artifice, it gives us a chance to be reminded about this effect; it looked as if quite a few conversations started on the sidewalk as the bus rocked by. Evidently even the flasher was inspired. And when extraordinary things are done in unison, not just by one eccentric but by a large group, the effect is amplified.
Take a look at the so-called missions of the street-theater group Improv Everywhere, in which hundreds of strangers suddenly freeze in the middle of Grand Central, or, as in its recent âMP3 Experiment Seven,â thousands of listeners simultaneously follow instructions heard over headphones. At first there is a certain implied mockery of those not in on the secret. But ultimately, the large-scale strangeness breaks down isolation with communal comedy. The Improv videos go viral.
Something like this happened in the tourâs final moments, as âThe Rideâ featured a transparent busload of passengers waving and singing âNew York, New York,â as listeners in the streets stared, watched, ran along or even, eventually, joined in. The street is quite a ride.
Schedules, information and tickets for “The Ride” are at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel, 1535 Broadway, at 46th Street; experiencetheride.com, (866) 299-9682.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City
I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. Itâs the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !
If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.
The Big Bus Tour in New York
You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!
If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!
I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.
Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.
From our experience, weâll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.
Google Reviews
Why take the big bus tour in new york.
While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.
As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.
The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.
I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.
Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .
Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.
Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.
We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.
How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.
The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages â French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.
Are There Toilets on the Big Bus
No. Unlike charter buses, you wonât travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.
If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.
Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.
How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City
The tour offers three options for purchase â 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.
When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.
The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.
We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.
Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.
The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

11 â Times Square North â 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)
Big Bus NYC Blue Route
The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.
We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.
12 â The Metropolitan Museum of Art â 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)
13 â Central Park Zoo â 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)
14 â Columbus Circle â Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)
Tips and Things to Know Before You Go
The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Donât stand while the bus is in motion.
- After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
- Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
- When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
- If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so youâll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.
Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.
We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.
The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!
By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.
Hereâs the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.
To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City
Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.
Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:
- Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
- Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
- Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
- You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.
I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.
Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesnât appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.
Happy Travels!

Customer Testimonials
Rachel was absolutely incredible, she was extremely knowledgeable and a lot of fun. Highly recommend!
Tyler Marie was our wonderful guide on this small bus tour of NYC. She was upbeat and so knowledgeable and happily answered our questions. Would definitely recommend this 6 hour tour. Frequent stops at highlights broke up the time nicely. We had fewer than 30 people on our bus. Our tour never felt rushed! Great experience.
Gil was an amazing tour guide. We booked the 6 hour NYC tour and I can not imagine a better way to see all that we saw in half a day. We started in Times Square, we were educated on history and architecture throughout our day. We made stops in Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Madison Square, the 911 Memorial, Ferry to Staten Island w views of The Statue of Liberty, & so much more. Worth every penny!
