Victor of the eleventh series of American Idol, Phillip LaDon Phillips (born September 20th 1990), known simply as Phillip Phillips, is an American folk-rock singer-songwriter hailing from Georgia, USA.

Phillip Phillips has certainly made the opportunity of performing on American Idol work to his benefit, selling over four million copies of his coronation song "Home" in the US. His style of music has been compared to Dave Matthews and his band, with other influences including John Butler, Damien Rice and Jonny Lang, heaping to create his brand of soulful, acoustic rock.

His debut album, "The World From The Side Of The Moon" was released on Interscope records on November 19, 2012. The album achieved moderate success, debuting at number four in the Billboard 200, with sales of 169,000 copies, eventually going on to be certified Platinum in August 2013. The album's first single, "Where We Came From" was released as a free download on pre-orders of the album, helping to garner interest at this promise of a free track.

Phillips has overcome a congenital kidney condition that causes the build-up of large kidney stones that are unable to pass. Having undergone extensive treatment and reconstructive surgery, he has overcome this debilitating illness, allowing Phillips to perform to the best of his capabilities without being in pain.

He has toured with major acts, opening for Matchbox Twenty on their 2013 North America tour. He has also opened for John Mayer and also Bruce Springsteen when he appeared at the Brazilian festival Rock in Rio. Philips has been nominated for several awards during his career but has yet to win any of these accolades.

Live reviews

Oh... What a shiny new proper artist we have here. It's been a while since I last saw one of these. Phillip Phillips has literally started from the bottom and now is here. From American Idol to being the highlight during one of the most famous festivals, Rock in Rio, on it's '13 edition, this guy works hard for everything he's achieved so far. Songwriting, impressive guitar skills, a loving personality that translates perfectly to his music and performance live, this kid has everything to be a proper full on artist and entertainer. The short setlist during Rock in Rio did not cut his pace on a big well made concert. From song to song, he made everyone dance and sing out loud in a perfect harmony that lasted even after the show was over. Everybody left thinking about that kid who proved himself in one of the biggest audiences he's ever seen. His vocals are on point, matching the type of music he makes, and his nerves didn't seem to exist - which just exposes what a prepared performer he is. The lyrics flow through the crowd, the dancing melodies match the dancing bodies on the floor, and the harmonies seem to last a lifetime on people's mouths. It's a concert you'll never forget.

I followed Phillip Phillips as he made his way through American Idol. From the beginning I was impressed by his shy, cool, natural personality. As he progressed all the way through to the finals, it was pretty clear that Phillip was something special. But as I thought about seeing Phillip Phillips perform live with a full band, I was a little skeptical as to how good a "performer" he would be. Man.... did he prove himself or what!? Phillip and his band were PHENOMENAL!!! I've listened to his albums, but he is SO MUCH better live. His music comes to life with the amount of power and energy that he and his band play with. It was difficult to choose which musician to watch, because they were each bringing something special to the show. Phillip himself really connected well with the audience. And the audience loved him for it. My love for him and his music grew that night. I am thankful for people like Phillip and his band mates, who are willing to put so much time and energy into giving me (the audience) an experience to remember. Go see Phillip Phillips!!

The show at variety playhouse in Atlanta was fantastic! It was my first time seeing him, though i knew i loved him from his song Home. Think that's the only song i knew, which surprised me. But every single moment of the show was excellent, impressive, and memorable. He is such a special talent, and a hometown boy. His parents were in the audience... Aaaw! His guitar was hot (didn't know he could play like that.) In addition to all of his incredible original songs, he killed very creative covers off wicked ways and thriller, 2 of my all-time faves. I'm beyond glad that i went to this show. i will make every effort to see him again and again, any time i get the chance. Oh, and he's very cute! Did not know that either.

Still going strong! Saying we've missed this guy is synonymous with we prefer to eat 3 meals/day! We've probably seen him live about 11X!!! Can't wait until he's moving about the country again but mostly Florida (hint, hint). Don't hesitate to invest in the time of your lives. Show him the love and admiration he so deserves by filling those seats. Holidays are here soon so bring the entire clan. Looking forward to the next album Phillip! Have a great well deserved tour. See ya soon!

Belly Up was a great, slightly intimate venue & the sightless from the side of the stage were PERFECT! Phillip Phillips was wonderful - funny, engaging, and played for a long time.

However, he did many cover songs (ending with "Thriller"), neglecting to play a few of his biggest hits ("Searchlight," "Unpack Your Heart"). THAT was immensely disappointing & shouldn't have happened. :(

Is this the same shy guy from American Idol ?? Phillip put on the most amazing show ! He played for 1 hr and 40 min. He is a true artist in every sense of the word. The last song he played was "home" his song from American Idol and he had the whole crowd on their feet and singing to it. The most fun we've had in a long time !! Phillip, your a star !!

Perfect venue for Philip and Errol to perform in. We got lucky and had front row seats and i felt like the show was just for me. They are both amazing performers and i will go see them again! Proud of that Georgia boy!! I predicted he would be the winner of AI the minute he walked out to perform for the judges!

Didn't get to see the show. Gates were delayed by 3 hours. Venue sucks. Opening act was finished by the time the line to enter made it to us. This was the most pathetic attempt at running a concert I've ever seen. No digs to Phillip Phillips, none of this was his fault.

Love, love, loved him! We had front, side seats and had the best time. He is amazing and so funny. My son came with me and made him an even bigger fan. I cannot wait to see him again in Philly, hopedully again at the City Winery.

Cheap tickets which is always a good thing for fans. Sat in the front row for $49. Cheap tickets were $25. Great performance. Love the small venue. Little merchandise to buy which was disappointing. Overall, another good concert.

The weather is just starting to warm up, but Phillip Phillips has slowly been announcing dates to get summer 2024 started. And this year, Phillip is stopping at various festivals across the country.

On May 25, he will perform at the Vogue Theatre in Indianapolis as part of the historic 500 Festival , the city’s most important community event of the year. On June 6, Phillip will headline the downtown Spartanburg Concert , in Spartanburg, SC.

Phillip is also part of the lineup at the Basilica Block Party in Minneapolis, MN. The event is over two days; Phillip’s show is on August 3. The Basilica Block Party celebrates the Basilica of Saint Mary, a spectacular and one of the most important landmarks in the city.

Philip will also be busy all of September, with dates in Utah, Virginia, Maryland, and New Hampshire. We will be on the lookout for more dates if he announces them!

All these shows are in support of his latest album, Drift Back , which was released in June 2023. Phillip has also embarked on a new chapter of his musical career, recording and releasing Drift Back as an independent artist for the first time.

Phillip Phillips’ “Long Time”

Special contribution by Thad Williams.

Phillip Phillips ’ 4th studio album Drift Back has finally been released after a five-year wait, and the collection of 10 songs brings a mix of both new and familiar sounds to convey a series of different perspectives on one common theme: Love. The eighth track on the album, “Long Time,” is no exception to this pattern, providing a look at love as it grows throughout the years and as the lives of the people involved change over time.

With “Drift Back” Phillip Phillips Goes Back to His Roots

There is an unshakable, heartbreaking sadness permeating Phillip Phillips’ most recent album, Drift Back . Released June 9, this is Phillips’ fourth album and his first in 5 years.

It’s difficult to believe that half a decade separates Collateral (2018) and this album, but to listen to Drift Back is to understand the passing of time and the changes — and sometimes sorrow— it leaves behind.

It’s a natural process: growing up, facing the challenges that life brings, our youthful innocence and optimism tested by reality and disillusionment. In Drift Back , Phillip does that mainly through the lens of love, exploring what early love, mature love, and love that is ending look like, but also, the resilience of love and what fighting for it demands from us.

The album opens with the previously released “ Dancing With Your Shadows ,” an 80s-infused pop-rock song that explores dark subject matter over an addictive uptempo beat. In numerous interviews and posts he shared at the time the song came out, Phillip explained that the song was dedicated to his wife Hannah B. Phillips. The song speaks about the frustration one feels at being unable to help a loved one going through a difficult time. In the case of Phillip, this was his inability to help Hannah with recurrent health issues.

It’s an impeccable introduction to the sound of the album: musically restrained and efficient; warm but sharply recorded and produced. This is how much of the album can be described. Whereas in all his previous albums Phillip had given ample space to experimentation (songs like “Thicket” in Beyond the Light or “Sand Castles” or “I Dare You” in Collateral ), in Drift Back he streamlines his songwriting to the essential, focusing of the lyrics and the best way to deliver them unencumbered.

That is one surprising aspect of Drift Back . Another is the revelation, which Phillip made recently during a radio show, that this is an independently released album.

Phillip released his first three albums with Interscope Records under 19 Recordings. The road has been less than smooth for Phillip in the last 10 years and his relationship with the music industry and his label has been complicated . Throughout it all, a few things have been clear: Phillip’s absolute discretion, his unwavering artistic integrity, and his incredible grit, courage, and determination.

Drift Back seems to capture thematically and musically some of these same characteristics, especially in how, despite the valleys and shadows of the relationships he describes in many of the songs, the ultimate message is of fighting for love until the last breath.

It’s the vivid fight of “Over,” where one person pleads with the other ‘don’t say is over’ or the devastating lyrics of “Love Come Back To Me,” where he seems to speak directly at Love and ask it ‘Love, you don’t come around, are you missing?’ or the starkly painful line, ‘I wanna be back there. Can we get back there. Cause I won’t let this be the way it ends’  in “Calm Before the Storm.”

If the sadness is at times heavy and dark, the sound of the album is unmistakable Phillip: crisp and warm, comforting and familiar. Phillip’s signature acoustic guitar riffs are enhanced by discreet electric guitars, synths, driving drums, and on one occasion, in the closer “So Will I,” a soulful saxophone. Unlike Phillip’s previous albums, where the experimental songwriting and arrangement seemed to be more on the forefront, musically, Drift Back is more subtle. Headphones are these songs’ best friend.

Another signature sound that is very present in the album is the cello, recorded by longtime friend and collaborator Dave Eggar , who has been working with Phillip since his debut. And it’s Eggar’s contribution that moves some of the songs into the more cinematic or narrative songwriting style that Phillip has displayed in the past. The best example of this is the magnificent “Calm Before the Storm,” (co-written by Phillip and Quinn Lewis) where Eggar’s cello is the foundation for the literal musical storm we hear in the chorus of the song and where even Phillip’s voice seems to come through us through the echo of stormy winds.

Drift Back was produced by Todd Clark and Tim Bruns , two veteran songwriters Phillip has a long history with. Todd Clark has worked with Phillip since his debut album, helping co-write numerous songs over the last eleven years (“Gone Gone Gone,” “Raging Fire,” and “Fly” among many others). For his part, Tim Bruns co-wrote one of Phillip’s most personal songs, “Dance With Me,” which served as Phillip and Hannah’s wedding song in 2015.

While each song deserves a special mention, “Strangers,” Phillip’s first official collaboration as part of his own album, shines musically and lyrically.  With its bright country flavour, haunting melody, and new collaborator Caitlyn Smith ’s superb vocals, this song is a wonderful departure for Phillip in this new phase of musical exploration. Drift Back was recorded entirely in Nashville, a city that has increasingly played a role in Phillip’s musical direction in the last several years. This song seems to perfectly encompass that modern country-pop Nashville sound.

After so much heartbreak, the album ends in a bright and hopeful tone with “So Will I,” a brilliant pop-rock song about unconditional love. The song captures the spirit of a declaration shouted out loud from the rooftops; it’s the renewal of a commitment to live fiercely and to overcome doubt and darkness by truly sharing our life with one another. It’s my favourite song in the album, the kind you can imagine singing out loud, arms raised in unison with thousands of others during a show. Perhaps it’s because I personally have experienced the lowest and darkest sides of sadness and depression that this song resonates so strongly for me. It tells me it is worth fighting for love and life.

In a recent interview, Phillip explained that this is a fully indie record and that as such, he had complete artistic control of the music, the songs selected as singles (he didn’t fully say it but implied it), and even the creation of the cover art of the album. This is an extraordinary achievement by Phillip, a musician whose career has teetered uneasily between a desire for artistic integrity and the demands of a cynical music industry from the very start. His origin story, being the winner of the most mainstream and popular music show in America, was the start of that uneasiness.

Despite it all, Phillip navigated this divide beautifully in all his previous albums. Now with Drift Back, he is announcing a new chapter, one where he gracefully and maturely “drifts back” to his origins as a songwriter and guitar player whose love of music drove him to pursue his wildest dreams and take huge risks while doing it.

“You cut like colours in the half-light” Phillip sings in “Before I Loved You.” With Drift Back , Phillip’s voice cuts like colours through the noise to deliver an album tempered by experience, love, and life.

It’s Phillip Phillips’ Summer and We’re Here for It

Phillip Phillips ’ new album Drift Back , is coming out in a mere 12 days on June 9. His first in 5 years, the album will also be the first since becoming a dad and going through the global trauma of the pandemic.

In preparation, Phillip has been ramping up in activities, releasing 4 songs from the album in 4 months, “Dancing With Your Shadows,”  “Love Come Back to Me,” “Before I Loved You,” and “So Will I.” This is in addition to “Love Like That,” which he released in April 2022.

He has not yet shared the tracklist of Drift Back , but this could very well be close to half of the songs on a full-length album.

Overall, the themes of the songs have been about love, not the butterflies in the stomach kind, but the mature, complex relationships that test us and make us question ourselves and our love; the trials of relationships and the limitations of love. Moving and very personal, the songs naturally hint at the growth Phillip has experienced as a musician and a person in the last five years.

Watch the videos for “ Dancing With Your Shadows ” and “ Before I Loved You .” Read our reviews of “ Dancing With Your Shadows ” and “ Love Come Back to Me .”

As part of his promotional activities, Phillip has also done a number of interviews to announce his upcoming album.

He talked to People Magazine in April in an exclusive, candid interview and appeared in the Songfacts Podcasts through a warm, long conversation. More recently, he appeared in a short, but great sit-down interview on ABC News.

On May 10, Phillip also announced a four-date mini-tour called “The Drift Back Sessions,” going from June 15 to June 23, plus his debut at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville and a few other one-off shows. Check out the stops and dates (announced so far) on his official site here .

Phillip has also been doing a great series of videos on his YouTube channel, sort of like an extension of his Tik Tok videos. Check them out here if you haven’t or if you still haven’t made your way to that app (like me).

Finally, Phillip will be performing at this year’s Memorial Day Concert in Washington, DC tomorrow, Sunday, May 28th.  The concert will be live-streamed on PBS’ website. You can watch it here !

It’s a lot to catch up to and we’re sure much more it’s to come from Phillip. We can’t wait for June 9th and what will surely be the summer of Phillip Phillips! What a time to be a fan!

Phillip Phillips releases 3rd single for his upcoming album, “Love Come Back to Me”

Special contribution by Thad Williams

Phillip Phillip fans were in for a pleasant surprise this past week when Phillip released the third single for his upcoming studio album just a week after the release of his latest music video . On March 7, Phillip announced that his new song “Love Come Back to Me”   will come out that Friday, and it was definitely a strong choice to follow up his last hit with.

“This album is a love album, but it’s not all happy. Love takes work—you have to stick it out through moments of difficulty to get to the beauty on the other side,” says Albany, Georgia-based singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips of his fourth album, Drift Back , out June 9 th , 2023. “The title speaks to me taking a step back to figure things out, and then drifting back to my life and my fans.”

The 10-song album is Phillip’s first in five years, and his first full-length release since becoming a father. It’s a self-reflective record that boasts an assortment of emotive indie-rock, and ethereally anthemic mid-tempo tracks along with Phillip’s signature stirring ballads. Drift Back is produced by Phillip’s longtime producer, the Nashville-based Todd Clark, a trusted collaborator since Phillip’s debut.

Phillip first rose to prominence as the winner of American Idol season 11which set an Idol record when 132 million votes were gathered for the finale, and Phillip was declared the winner. His heartfelt songwriting, ruggedly-warm sensibilities , and his true musicianship wowed millions. Since then, Phillip has emerged a multi-platinum selling recording artist who has released three chart-topping albums, and, along the way, accumulated over 1.1 billion on-demand streams and over 1.2 billion Pandora streams. Phillip has taken his expansive brand of earthy, guitar-fueled rock to stages across the globe, and toured with John Mayer, Gavin DeGraw, the Goo Goo Dolls, and has shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen.

Phillip’s first live solo performance was Easter Sunday to a packed house at church when he was just 18. He was so terrified the entire time he didn’t look up. Previously, he had been playing guitar and singing in church, and his sister, upon hearing his beautiful, soulful voice, implored him to undertake this step-out performance opportunity. “I was scared of her, so I said yes,” he says with a good-natured laugh. From then on, Phillip kept writing, singing, and performing for friends, and at parties, bars, and restaurants.

When he was 21, American Idol was at the height of its popularity, and though Phillip wasn’t a regular viewer, he was well aware of the talent franchise. His family and friends were fans of the show, and they offered to pay his gas if he auditioned. After 8-10 hours of waiting with his sister and brother in law to see if he was cast, Phillip got the green light. His flight to LA to be on the show was the first time Phillip had been on a plane that actually landed—the only other time he flew was when he went skydiving.

Since then, Phillip never stopped grinding, consistently issuing well-received albums and tirelessly touring. He released his previous album in 2018, but he didn’t stop writing and collecting life experiences over the past five years. Drift Back poetically chronicles this poignant and transformative time, including watching his son being born, parenting a toddler, and keeping a marriage vibrant (his pro tip: never stop dating each other).

Drift Back opens with the exhilarating, “Dancing With Your Shadows,” an arena-ready, indie-rock track bursting with pent-up emotionality. Here, Phillip contrasts upbeat musicality with a harrowing narrative of watching a loved one struggle with an elusive sickness. “You feel helpless—you want a quick fix, but I’ve learned that sometimes just being present can be enough,” Phillip shares. The achingly beautiful, “Love Come Back To Me,” glows with twinkling melodic guitars and features Phillips heartwarming falsetto flutter. It’s a confessional ballad about Phillip’s quest for inner happiness. On the acoustic ballad, “Long Time,” Phillip explores his own insecurities about being the best version of himself for his wife and son.

The standout single, “Before I Loved You,” is a goose-bump inducing, ambiently-textured love ballad featuring Phillip’s sweetly weary vocals soaring skyward. “It’s a love song for my wife. She pushes me to be the best man, musician, husband, and father I can be. I always try to write a little note for her and slip it into her lunchbox, on her computer, or in her jacket. I guess with ‘Before I Loved You,’ I’m slipping one of these notes for her on this album,” he says. Drift Back concludes with the country-tinged ballad, “Strangers,” a song of yearning for new love’s first kiss and stomach butterflies.

Up next, Phillip will be drifting back on tour and enjoying his 11 th year as a professional musician. “Sometimes when I play shows, people tell me it’s their 14 th or 15 th time seeing me, and I feel really blessed,” he says. “I’m so grateful for my fans, and I can’t wait to share this album with them. I know people always say that their current album is their best, but I am the proudest of these songs as I’ve ever been of any, and I can’t wait to play them live.”

Jonah Kagen

Jonah Kagen.jpg

23-year-old singer and songwriter, Jonah Kagen, grew up in Savannah, Georgia. He took up guitar at the age of six, diving deep into the instrument’s technical aspects after his musician grandfather showed him performance videos. He further found inspiration in the music of guitarist Andy McKee, whose finger-style technique lit a creative fire within. “He opened my eyes to what an acoustic guitar could be,” he recalls, as he dove deeper into creating music on his own. “If you can bring somebody something with your music that they can’t get anywhere else, there’s nothing better than that.”

Jonah’s debut EP, ‘georgia got colder,’ was released in December 2022 on Arista Records. He’s already cut impressive figures with over 140M+ global streams, a US tour supporting Maisie Peters, ~2 million Spotify monthly listeners, and was included on Shazam’s 2023 predictions list. An exciting new voice bringing undeniable energy and sincerity through his multifaceted sound, he is undoubtedly on the rise.

Atwood Magazine - For the Love of Music

Interview with Phillip Phillips: “If you love someone, you’ve got to love them hard.”

Phillip Phillips © George Whiddon

After a 5-year drought, Phillip Phillips decides to ‘Drift Back’ to music with a heart-wrenching new album that serves as a vessel to a range of all that is human experience in the most inspirational way.

Stream: ‘drift back’ – phillip phillips, t ime really is that mystical thing that heals all and leads to better things..

Singer/songwriter Phillip Phillips is a prime example of this. Over the past five years, Phillips went through the wringer – between issues with his management team and his wife experiencing some serious health problems, COVID, and on a positive note, the birth of his son, there was no shortage of ups and downs.

All of this caused Phillips to take a step back from music and focus on his core pillars of family and love. Feeling confident in where he is at in life, he returns with Drift Back , his fourth studio album (independently out now). This piece of art serves first and foremost a love letter to struggle and the importance of perseverance.

Drift Back - Phillip Phillips

In 2012 when Phillips won Season 11 of American Idol , he was just a boy from Albany, Georgia with a funny name, a dream, and plenty of talent. From just a 30-minute conversation with him, it is clear that a child-like sense of awe and adoration about music continues to course through his veins and push him to continue his pursuit of music.

We begin with a question of what made now the right time to make his return, to which Phillips shares a synopsis of the past five years and begins to dive into an explanation on how his music has been impacted directly by the time away and all the events that occurred.

“It’s like a new chapter,” he shares.

Phillip Phillips © George Whiddon

With this sentiment in mind, fatherhood in all its faces quickly became one of the pillars of our talk.

As he talks about how his son impacts his music, Phillips’ demeanor brightens almost instantly.

“I’ve written a couple of things about him,” he says. “Like the song, ‘Love Like That’ is about him and my wife, but having a kid also changes your relationship with your partner in amazing ways and in ways that you have to learn. So that’s just part of growing and having new chapters in our lives and new seasons, but having him, he is the best little buddy in the entire world, even when it’s tough. I love being with him.”

Continuing to discuss his background and the roots and influences of his music, we move into a conversation about his home of Georgia.

“There’s a lot of country musicians and people that love country music that are from where I live, and I like the old school country music, but I grew up listening to a lot of rock and a lot of amazing singer-songwriters that were country musicians but they were incredible storytellers. A lot of rock, like The Beatles and all that kind of stuff,” he says.

Phillips discusses more of his musical influences and how they added to his musicianship. “I was kind of in a way an outcast as a musician because I didn’t play country music; I just talked really country. Ray Charles is from where I live, so I love Ray Charles. I love a lot of blues and funk, so that’s always been in my blood. I’ve always listened to that music and it’s been a big part of me. Also, growing up in the country, I enjoy and appreciate the small things and the quietness and everything that moves a little bit slower, you know?”

Phillip Phillips © George Whiddon

When it comes to his music, Phillips doesn’t really define himself.

On this, he says jokingly, “As long as you like my music, you can call me whatever you want.”

Listening to each album, especially this most recent release, all of these influences from The Beatles to Ray Charles and all the country, singer/songwriters, and in-between can be heard, which is really the magic of Phillip Phillips’ sound.

His music isn’t written for one group of people, it has elements that may appeal to anyone. Considering “Love Like That,” for instance, we can hear a healthy mix of driving pop elements with more of a gospel-like atmosphere and lyrics that subscribe to the detailed storyline that country often tends to. Blending all these traits is something that Phillips is truly a master at.

In relation to this, when asked how he goes about his whole creative and production process, he says, “That’s the hardest part, right? I’ll have a bunch of ideas that I’ll think are good ideas, but then turn out not good. Whenever I can actually execute something whether it starts off on the guitar or an idea of what I want to write about. When it starts off as the right idea, it might take a little while, but I feel like I can end it in a place where I’m really proud of it, and each song on this album really represents these past five years of some struggles and also some things to celebrate as well. It speaks to sadness and happiness.”

Phillip Phillips © George Whiddon

As we get deeper into our conversation, we begin to really dissect the album together – beginning first with a question of which song or songs presented the greatest challenges in their creation.

“I will say, ‘Dancing With Your Shadows’ was kind of difficult to pin down because it started off as more of a ballad. I came up with a part that was a lot slower on the guitar, more picky, kind of Americana style. We never could quite build to where we’d like to end. So then I picked up the guitar, an electric guitar, just to try something different and that turned into what it is now.”

As he reflects, he shares, “To be honest with you, not a lot of them were really that hard. It all felt so organic and natural.”

Every song ended where I’m proud of it, and when I play it live it always goes to a different level.

Talking more about “Dancing With Your Shadows,” a heartbreakingly beautiful song that speaks to the importance of companionship during tough times, Phillips shares his perspective on the song. He speaks about how his wife was going through some complicated and taxing health problems post the birth of their son, and how “she would get really sad and as her husband, she’s my best friend, I just would try to cheer her up, buy her flowers, do things, surprise her. I’ve kind of learned that you don’t have to do all that, sometimes you just gotta be there and just be quiet and sit in that silence together, and that’s enough.”

It’s hard to hear your words When you’re so afraid to speak ’em Somethings on your mind But you’re hiding it away

You say that we’re going under i say we still got each other, it breaks my heart that you can’t let go you say you’re fine, but girl, i know you’ve been dancing, dancing, dancing with your shadows.

We jump to a discussion of the track “Long Time,” a tune that takes on a retrospective lens. In response to the question of vulnerability and how he navigated writing this song, Phillips says, “I wrote that first verse really fast one day. Literally just picked up a guitar and wrote it within a matter of a minute or so. That first verse really stuck with me and then I had to put the guitar down because I think my kid wanted to go play or something, and then I finally finished.”

“That song is really special. It’s really about reflection of self and my life, how my priorities have changed, and even how some goals may have changed, and my feelings in general for myself. We all struggle with times when we get a little sad and times when we’re really high. Ten years, I think was about when I wrote the song. Ten years goes by really quick and you don’t really know until you can actually see it. I always knew that life and time would go by fast because I would go on tour for three to four months and not come home. I would get home and see some family and friends, and it made me slow down and look in the mirror and see, oh man I am getting a little older, but whatever, I’ve got another tour coming up. I would always notice it, but then I always had another gig coming up, I stayed busy. Then COVID hit, and I had time to really slow down, I had a kid, and things going on in my personal life that were hard to deal with. So that song is really special, and it’s about just me being with the person that I love and that’s really all that matters.”

In talking about this song, we loop back to the topic of fatherhood, as he mentions the lyric, “ And a new son to watch us grow, ” which prompts Phillips to say, “Not us watching him grow; I want him to always love me and respect who I am, and also to be able to come to me for anything and talk to me about anything.”

‘American Idol’ alum Phillip Phillips reflects on becoming a husband and dad: 'Life changing'

As he celebrates the release of his new album, “Drift Back,” Phillip Phillips is reflecting on how his life has transformed over the past few years.

“The years that have passed since my last album have truly been life changing,” the “American Idol” alum, 32, wrote in a recent Instagram post . “The world tilted on its axis. I became a dad. I grew in my marriage. I learned to parent and be a husband during a pandemic.”

He added that his latest album “reflects the wins and losses I experienced during those years.”

Phillips, 32, became a first-time father just before the COVID-19 pandemic when he and his wife, Hannah, welcomed their son, Patch, in November 2019.

The “Home” singer said he has “learned, loved, and lived” in the years since the release of his last studio album, “Collateral,” which came out in 2018.

“I am excited to drift back to what I’ve always loved with my fans and that is music,” he wrote. “I am so proud of this album and how it puts my soul into song and brings you all into my life a little bit more, for better or for worse. Let’s drift back to the good stuff.”

The singer also shared details about his Drift Back 2023 Tour , which will kick off in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 5, and will cover more than 20 cities around the country.

“It’s gonna be so good seeing all your faces! I’m so excited I could kiss ya!” he wrote in an Instagram post about the upcoming tour.

Phillips was just 21 when he won “American Idol” in 2012.

“I’m from Leesburg, Georgia, and yes, that is my real name,” he said on "Idol" during Season 11.

Phillips went platinum with his first studio album, “The World from the Side of the Moon,” which includes two of his hit singles, “Home” and “Gone, Gone, Gone.”

"American Idol" recently wrapped its 21st season, with 18-year-old Hawaiian singer Iam Tongi crowned the winner of the long-running singing competition show.
