Accessible through a narrow valley between Hiunchuli and Machapuchare peaks, the sanctuary remained unexplored by outsiders until 1956. Shielded by high mountains, the sanctuary receives only seven hours of sunlight per day at the height of summer. Renowned for its unparalleled beauty and spiritual significance, the Annapurna Sanctuary attracts trekkers from across the globe. The journey is facilitated by our local Nepalese staff, whose expertise and dedication ensure a safe and enriching experience. In recent years, the number of trekkers visiting the Sanctuary has increased significantly, partly due to its role as a base for climbing the Annapurna peaks and all trip arrange by Treks Himalaya where we permit share.

The Annapurna Sanctuary is now part of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project , which imposes restrictions on activities such as deforestation, firewood collection, and grazing. The trek traverses diverse ecosystems, from lush tropical jungles of rhododendron and bamboo on south-facing slopes to drier, cooler climates resembling the Tibetan Plateau on north-facing slopes. The trek passes through remote villages, terraced fields, and forests of bamboo and chestnut trees, offering glimpses into the daily lives of local villagers. Our ultimate destination is the heart of the mountainous amphitheater, where Annapurna Base Camp awaits. This sacred sanctuary was once revered by the Gurung people, who believed it to be inhabited by various deities from Hinduism, Buddhism, and ancient animistic traditions. The towering peak of Machapuchare, known as the “Fish Tail,” was believed to be the abode of the Hindu god Shiva, with its snow-capped summit likened to divine incense. Tips for Safe and Successful Trekking in the Annapurna Sanctuary

One of the best things you can do to prepare for your trek is to get your gear in order. Make sure you have the right backpack, hiking boots, and layers for the cooler temperatures at higher altitudes. It would be better if you take a hiking pole or two to help with the uphill sections.

Another important tip is to ensure you’re acclimatized to the altitude before starting the trek. The Annapurna Base Camp trek brings you an environment of 4,130 meters (13,545 feet), so it’s essential to make sure that your body adjusts to it. The best way to do this is to spend a few days in Pokhara (at an altitude of 910 meters/2,992 feet) before starting the trek. This will allow you to get used to the thin air and reduce your chances of altitude sickness.

Finally, make sure you’re well-hydrated before starting the trek. Drinking plenty of water will help prevent altitude sickness and make the hike more enjoyable since you’ll be less thirsty. I also recommend carrying a water filter or purifier to refill your water bottle from streams along the way.

Accommodation Facilities In Annapurna Sanctuary Trail

Accommodation in Annapurna Base camp

Three main types of accommodation options are available along the trail to Annapurna Base Camp: tea houses, camping, and homestays.

Tea houses are the most common accommodation type and can be found in even the most remote villages. They typically consist of a small room with two beds and sometimes an attached bathroom. The prices vary depending on the location and amenities, but they are generally very affordable.

Camping is another popular option for trekkers. A few companies offer guided camping tours, or you can choose to go it alone. If you opt for the latter, you will need to carry all of your own gear, which can be quite heavy. That said, it is a great way to immerse yourself in the wilderness and get away from the hustle and bustle of the tea houses.

Homestays are becoming increasingly popular in Nepal and offer a unique cultural experience. You will have the opportunity to live with a local family and learn about their way of life. The cost of a homestay includes meals and usually starts at around $10 per night.

The hike can be as smooth as a short trek for regular hikers, but it is challenging for passive trekkers. That’s why we suggest every traveler be well-prepared before they take this trekking package.

Here are some of the challenges you might face during the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek:

Rugged Routes

The complicated pathways to Annapurna Base Camp are a challenge you might face. While the base camp is situated 40km north of the central city of Pokhara, modernization is not the thing to be expected. The routes are rugged though you will be walking through seasonal roads at some places. Be ready to boot up with your gears and use them more for safe travel here.

Climate And Temperature

If you are traveling to Annapurna Sanctuary in the winter season, one thing you must be ready to face is cold. Winter in the Himalayas can be life-threatening, and the temperature will likely fall below 0 Degrees Celsius. So buckle up your warm clothes and sleeping bags. Also, remember to have hot water to keep your body warm and hydrated.

High Altitude And Illness

While Annapurna Base Camp is at 4,130 meters above sea level, many travelers are highly endangered by altitude sickness. If you have yet to go to high altitude before then, it is the prominent thing you should be preparing for. Make sure you carry a first aid kid with you, and if your body says no, return to a lower altitude.

You’re now fully prepared to trek at Annapurna Base Camp. While it’s definitely not a walk in the park, if you’ve followed this guide and taken the necessary precautions, you should be ready for an unforgettable adventure. Enjoy the stunning views, take lots of pictures, and make plenty of memories—this is one journey you’ll never forget.

Ajay

Being a travel and trekking guide for over a decade, I decided to expand my passion for a travel to be a tour organizer and build my team of travel experts. What's best about my passion is that I get to spend a considerable amount of time every single day with the legendary climbers and mountain lovers from all around the worlds. There's no greater achievement for me than having a set of regular friends around who always have stories of their great feat or their special encounters with the locals in the mountains to share.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek – Short Trek to ABC

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek (ABC Trek) is a popular quick access base camp trekking located in the Annapurna Conservation Area in Nepal. It offers stunning views of the Annapurna mountain range and takes you through diverse landscapes, including lush forests, terraced fields, high-altitude alpine meadows, and charming villages inhabited by ethnic Gurung communities.

One of the highlights of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is reaching the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), the highest point of the trek at an altitude of 4,130 meters. The base camp offers awe-inspiring views of gigantic mountains, including Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South (7,219 m), Machhapuchhare (also known as Fishtail Mountain), Gangapurna (7,455 m), and Hiunchuli (6,434 m). Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is the best trekking option for those who hope to reach the base camps of the high mountains in less time and without any strenuous walking.

It is possible to make the Annapurna Sanctuary trek itinerary short and long to suit your needs. The longer route goes via Poon Hill (3,210 m) and the shorter route via Ghandruk or Simrung directly to Annapurna Base Camp. After the motor road connecting Nayapul to Simrung near Jhinu Danda and Ghandruk, it became possible to make the Annapurna Sanctuary trek within 7 days, bypassing the Kathmandu section.

The short Annapurna Sanctuary trek starts from Simrung village and ends at Simrung village. There is an off-road drive from Nayapul to Simrung village but from Pokhara to Nayapul on Blacktop Road. Of course, drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara on the blacktop road, but if you prefer to use a flight, that is also possible.

The trek from Simrung village you will follow the trail through beautiful villages, terraced fields, and lush forests. You will pass through Jhinu Danda, Chhomrong, Sinuwa, Bamboo, Himalaya hotel, Deurali, Machhapuchhare Base Camp, and Annapurna Base Camp.

But if you want to go trekking for less than 7 days, then it is mandatory that you have to use a flight between Kathmandu and Pokhara. However, including the Kathmandu segment, at least 10 days are required including arrival, departure, and sightseeing in Kathmandu city.

There is also a natural hot spring near Jhinu Danda on the trek route, you can purify yourself spiritually in the natural hot springs with bathing areas in the lap of the mountains. Locals believe that the waters have a healing quality that ease away your aches and pains.

After enjoying the Annapurna Base Camp, you usually retrace your steps back to Simrung village to end the trek. The return journey follows roughly the same path as the ascent, but maybe faster due to the descending terrain. However, it is still necessary to take proper care of your physical health, as the downhill trek can be tough on your knees and joints.

From Simrung, you will drive by local private jeep to Pokhara. The next day, you will drive or fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu, depending on your travel plans.

10 days Annapurna Sanctuary Trek (Annapurna Base Camp Trek) includes 5 days trekking (7 days from Kathmandu), one day sightseeing in Kathmandu and two days for arrival and departure from Kathmandu.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek - Two weeks Adventure

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is one of Nepal's best picturesque tea house adventures. This is two weeks long trekking into the heart of Annapurna with Poon Hill. It is graded as a moderate plus trek on its difficulty level. It explores various climatic conditions from subtropical to alpine, ascending a beautiful, varied landscape of cultivated terrace fields. Lust forests of oaks, magnolia, and rhododendron trees scatter amid the Annapurna Massif. The traditional thatch-roofed villages are set among narrow terrace fields. And the backdrop of stunning snow-capped mountain ranges is breathtaking. The vegetation and culture change with the elevation change. It exhibits an incredible variety of flora and fauna. You will encounter diverse ethnic groups. Undoubtedly, it is a dazzling Himalayan paradise. It is like trekking through a live, open museum in Nepal.

Itinerary, Safety, Best Time, and Cost

We start this trek to Annapurna Sanctuary from Nayapual. First, we hike to Poon Hill, following the beautiful green Modi Khola valley. Spectacular towering peaks surround the valley. We witness the gushing sparkling waterfalls tumbling down into the roaring river below. We ascend to the fascinating Machhapuchhare ( Fishtail) Base Camp. Beyond that, the valley widens as it reaches the lateral moraine of Annapurna South glacier. The mountain views are breathtaking from here. Hiumchuli, Annapurna I, III, South, Gangapurna, and Fishtail complete a fabulous panorama. A further gradual 3 hours of steady hiking to Sanctuary. It is a breathtaking wonderland of glistering peaks, snowfields, and glaciers.

We are aware of and prepared for the safety of our valued customers. Our medical-trained trek guide will accompany you with essential medicine. Food and drug allergies are taken care of. Carry enough doctors-prescribed medication with you, if any. We carry the Oxygen cylinder if required on this Annapurna trek. This Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is famous among amateur trekkers. Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Difficulty and Physical Fitness

Where 40% less Oxygen is available in comparison with the sea level. It is safe and snows walking at a higher elevation. We are aware of the volatile weather conditions of the Himalayas. Overall a great experience climbing to Annapurna Base Camp. Our Sherpa, Yam, was brilliant and went over and above to look after us when we suffered from altitude sickness. Trek itself had truly amazing views too!

I had a brilliant time with MM on my first-ever trekking holiday. I appreciated being in a small group of two as it meant our plans were easily adapted to suit more of what we wanted along the way. CP was an excellent guide who looked after us significantly when my fellow trekker fell ill and was hugely entertaining, friendly, caring, and passionate about the trek, Nepal, and life itself! Just when I thought nothing could top our day at Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), our last day during the Dashain festival was so beautiful that it caused a lump in my throat of gratitude and emotion, especially when we were playing on the festival swing with the children after walking through the beautiful paddy fields with the endless variety of pretty butterflies and dragonflies.

Prasun, our porter, was amazing; I wish I could have spoken Nepalese to him! In comparison with another tour company (compared notes with another group post-trek), ours was much better organized. The service was far better and more respectful with private transfers between KTM and Pokhara. I definitely recommend MM and would use them again.

It was a wonderful trip-will, never forget it, and we are so pleased we went to base camp. We were looked after and cared for; nothing was too much, and we were appreciative. Nepalese people are really kind and caring.

The food was always excellent, and the combination of guide and porter was exceptionally good-they. Both looked after us so well. So Pradip, we had a wonderful trip – well organized-were well-cared for-and, a trip we shall never forget. Thank you for that.

Some of these landmarks are considered World Heritage Sites including the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous ‘Monkey Temple’ (Swayambhunath) and Buddhist shrine (Bouddhanath) which is one of the largest stupas in the world. At noon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we can meet our trek leader and other team members. Himalayan Glacier briefs us regarding our trek as well as provides us an opportunity to ask any questions we may have regarding our upcoming adventure. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Fly to Pokhara; drive to Hile and trek to Ulleri

We take an early morning flight to Pokhara and enjoy amazing views of the Himalayas; opt to sit on the right side of the plane. On arrival in Pokhara, we are rewarded with magnificent views of the Himalayas including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre, the five peaks of Annapurna and several others. After a short rest, we drive to Hile, which is our trailhead. We pass through sub-tropical valley forests, sometimes on the carved trail on the side of the cliff. After lunch, we cross the Bhurungdi Khola via a bridge to the village of Tikhedhunga. The Ulleri Hill with thousands of steps and boulders that continually go upward will really prove a test of our stamina. We reach Ulleri by afternoon. Overnight in Ulleri.

Ulleri to Ghorepani

After breakfast, we make our way ascending towards Ghorepani. The name Ghorepani in Nepali means ‘horse-water’ due to it being an important campsite for traders before it became a trekker’s stop. Ghorepani is an interesting place with small shops and stalls for selling local products and crafts. The town has two parts: one in a saddle and the other a few hundred feet lower. We stop at the higher part of the Ghorepani village that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains including Annapurna South and Nilgiri mountains. Since Ghorepani lies quite higher than our previous stop, we begin to feel the chilly weather especially in the evenings. Overnight in Ghorepani.

Ghorepani to Tadapani; visit Poon Hill

Today is a big day for us, so we make an early morning climb along the steep trail to Poon Hill viewpoint (3,210m/10,529ft.) to witness the most amazing sunrise views over the Himalayas. Poon Hill is the most popular trekking destination of the Annapurna region. It is also a great vantage point to enjoy the amazing views of Mustang, Pokhara and more than 20 of the highest mountains, including the close-up views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After spending some time taking pictures and having coffee, tea or hot chocolate, we return to Ghorepani for breakfast. Then we head east and climb a nearby ridge. We descend through rhododendron forests, pass by spectacular waterfalls along the way and reach Tadapani to spend the night. Overnight in Tadapani.

Tadapani to Chhomrong

The trail starts off with a descent through a large rhododendron forest. The forest trail ends and our trail opens up to beautifully terraced fields. We walk uphill for around 5 km and pass waterfalls and reach a suspension bridge. Suspension bridges are very common in the hilly and mountainous regions of Nepal. A few more miles of uphill and downhill trekking and we reach our destination for today, Chhomrong. It is a beautiful village right below the giant Annapurna massive. Overnight in Chhomrong.

Chhomrong to Bamboo

We leave Chhomrong and walk on quite a number of stone steps before reaching the Chhomrong Khola. We cross a suspension bridge over the river and begin an uphill climb to Sinuwa. Our trail passes through a beautiful forest to Kuldihar. From here we embark on an easy descent to Bamboo. Overnight in Bamboo.

Bamboo to Deurali

We pass through a bamboo forest which is damp and cold. We then walk uphill on a trail which is sometimes steep.  It is only after reaching Himalaya Hotel that the forest opens up and we are out in the sun again with astounding views of the glacial river below. It is a steep climb up through a much drier forest before reaching Hinku Cave. From here our trail descends to a river before ascending to Deurali. From here, we can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding hills and Mt. Dhaulagiri. We notice that the vegetation has become sparse allowing magical views of the valley, the river below and cliffs adorned with waterfalls. Overnight in Deurali.

Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp via Machhapuchhre Base Camp

We follow the valley trail on a steady climb after our breakfast. The trail sticks to a rocky cliff and is sometimes steep. We walk on a somewhat flat path for a while before ascending to Machhapuchhre Base Camp. From here, we get excellent views of Mt. Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Gandharvachuli and Gangapurna mountains. We then turn left and begin ascending gently to the Annapurna Base Camp. During our ascent, we get to admire spectacular views of the Himalayan panorama. Walking further, we reach the astounding base camp of Mt. Annapurna. We are surrounded by magnificent peaks and the only way into this area is through the gorge we just hiked. Overnight in Annapurna Base Camp.

Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo

From Annapurna Base Camp our trail rapidly descends past the Machhapuchhre Base camp, Deurali, Himalayan Hotel and Doban and finally to Bamboo where we spend the night. Today’s trek is downhill so it shouldn’t be very difficult. Overnight in Bamboo.

Bamboo to Jhinu Danda

We retrace our step back to Chhomrong where we stop for lunch. From Chomrong it is a steep descent down to the Modi Khola valley. The stone steps to Chhomrong are equally tricky as they were before. The trail then descends to Jhinu Danda, where we will be resting for the night. On the way, we enjoy our walking through rain forests and farms. After reaching Jhinu Danda, we can spend the rest of the afternoon taking a rest and relaxing. Overnight in Jhinu Danda.

Trek to Mathque; drive to Pokhara

After breakfast today, we leave Jhinu Danda and enjoy the final leg of the hike on the beautiful hill landscapes of western Nepal. On reaching Matque, we will begin our drive back to Pokhara on a private vehicle. It will take us around 2 hours to reach the city of lakes. We have lunch on the way. The actual trek to the Annapurna Sanctuary and back ends today. On reaching Pokhara, we check in at our hotel and rest for a while. In the afternoon, we will set out for a half-day sightseeing tour of Pokhara. Overnight in Pokhara.

Fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu

In the afternoon, we catch a flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Don’t miss out to sit on the left side of the plane to see some amazing views of the Himalayas. On arrival in Kathmandu, we check in at our designated hotel. We enjoy the remaining day in leisure or catch up on some last-minute shopping or explore any landmarks, which we might have missed during our first day in Kathmandu. To celebrate the successful completion of our journey, we will enjoy a farewell dinner in the evening. Overnight in Kathmandu.

If you wish to extend your stay in Nepal and make up your mind to partake some other activities, then Himalayan Glacier will be more than happy to make all arrangements for you. Ciao!
