Your Trip to the Netherlands: The Complete Guide

visit usa the netherlands

The Netherlands is a beautiful country with glorious national parks, picturesque windmills, and romantic canals all waiting to be explored. Cyclists will feel right at home in a country where there are more bikes than people while history, art, and architecture lovers will have plenty of sights to pique their interest. Plus, the cannabis is legal, and cheese and beer are celebrated; what’s not to love? This guide will help you plan your trip to the Netherlands from start to finish.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: Being a Northern European country, the Netherlands doesn’t experience much extreme weather, however rain is common all year round. During the depths of winter, the temperature can drop down to 35 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius), whereas in July it only makes it to 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius) (66 degrees F). On any given day, the weather can quickly switch from sunny to rainy and back to sunny again and, being a flat country, the wind can feel quite strong. For more information, read our complete weather and climate guide for the Netherlands .

Language: Citizens in the Netherlands speak Dutch as their first language, but almost everyone speaks at least some English and many are fluent, making communicating in the Netherlands easy for English-speaking tourists.

Currency: Euros.

Getting Around : The NS rail system in the Netherlands is fairly clean, modern, and runs on time. If you’re traveling around the country and want to do so on your own time, it’s easy to hire a car from Schiphol (the Netherland’s largest airport) and in Rotterdam. In the country’s big cities everyone tends to travel by bicycle, which are easy and affordable to rent. Uber is available in the Randstad area (covering Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht), as well as Eindhoven, Haarlem and ‘t Gooi. You can see where in the Netherlands that Uber is available on their website .

Travel Tip: The cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam have the metro, trams, and buses, while The Hague and Utrecht offer buses and trams to get around. In each city, you can buy day tickets that allow you access to all modes of transport.

Things to Do

The Netherlands is famous for so many things, from canals and clogs to windmills and tulips, so it can be hard to decide what to do while there. A visit to the country wouldn't be complete without taking a boat tour and winding your way through Amsterdam's waterways. It's also well-worth hiring a bike like a local and heading to Zaanse Schans , a picturesque village with beautiful traditional windmills.

  • If you find yourself in the country in spring, you should take a trip to Keukenhof. The park welcomes over one million visitors each season and you'll be greeted by seven million blooms including the iconic Dutch tulips.
  • Love being by the water? In summer, be sure to check out the beach clubs at Zandvoort or Noordwijk for instant Ibiza vibes.
  • A trip to Amsterdam is all about balance. Learn about one of the most famous Dutchman at the Van Gogh Museum , then head to a coffeeshop (a cannabis cafe).

Explore what else this country has to offer with our articles on the best things to do and how to spend a week in the Netherlands .

What to Eat and Drink

Dutch cuisine is tasty and very reminiscent of home cooking. There is bitterballen , a thick stew which is breaded and fried, a perfect partner to a small beer (for which the Netherlands is also known). Stamppot is a traditional comfort food consisting of boiled, mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables and sometimes meat. Stroopwafels, a large caramel-filled wafer cookie, are plentiful and can be bought plain or dipped in melted chocolate and loaded with different toppings like marshmallows or hazelnuts.

Then there are Dutch cheeses, which are typically relatively hard and fairly mild like gouda and edam. You can visit the cheese market in the town of Gouda or head to the cheese market in Alkmaar, the oldest cheese market in the Netherlands.

As for the beers we mentioned, Jopenkerk in Haarlem is an old church that has been converted to a craft beer brewery and restaurant, where you can take a tour, taste the beers, and stop for lunch. Alternatively, head to Amsterdam and hotfoot it to the old Heineken Brewery (now a museum) if you want to see how a household name beer is brewed. More into wine? Take a tour and have a tasting at Amsterdam's own winery.

If you're more interested in gourmet fare, the Netherlands has a variety of Michelin-starred restaurants, including three-Michelin-starred De Librije in Zwolle and Inter Scaldes in Kruiningen.

Want more in-depth information on Dutch food? Check out our guides to the top foods and dishes to try in the Netherlands , plus the best places for craft beer .

Where to Stay

Most first-time visitors head straight to Amsterdam which is the country's capital and most popular city welcoming 20 million visitors in 2019 (compared to one million residents). From here you can take day trips to Utrecht, Haarlem, The Hague, and Gouda. You can also get to Rotterdam in a day, but this city, known for its contemporary art and architecture, is worth spending a few nights in. Plus, from Rotterdam you can reach Tilburg, Breda, and both the De Biesbosch and Drunen National Parks.

Interior design in the Netherlands is incredibly chic, and there are plenty of luxe hotels to stay in such as The Dylan in Amsterdam and Hotel Pincoffs in Rotterdam. Airbnb is available around the country, in fact you can even find some houseboats on the site, if you’re looking for somewhere different to stay.

Getting There

From the U.S. you can fly to Schiphol airport on various airlines including American Airlines, British Airways, and KLM. You can also fly into Rotterdam, but flights can be limited and more expensive. It could work out cheaper to fly to Amsterdam and travel by train to Rotterdam, which costs around 18 euros per person.

You can rent a car but parking in the Netherlands, especially in the bigger cities, is incredible expensive. If your hotel doesn’t have free or affordable parking, it’s best to get around on a bike, tram, bus or metro. The country isn’t huge—it’s roughly half the size of South Carolina—so it’s easy to get around on public transportation.

Culture and Customs

The Netherlands is a safe country where most people speak at least some English.

You generally only tip waiting staff if the service was good or exceptional, at which point you tip around 5 to 10 percent. Otherwise, you can round up the bill or leave the change.

Typically, Dutch people are quite formal which can come across as being a little standoffish.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Want to travel the city freely? Get a GVB (in Amsterdam) or RET (in Rotterdam) day pass, which allows you to travel on most buses, trams and the metro, from eight euros.
  • Taxis from the airports are expensive but don’t be tempted to hop in an unlicensed cab. Uber operates in the country and costs around 30 euros from Schiphol to Amsterdam. From Rotterdam airport to the city center is around 16 euros.
  • Museums are not free in the Netherlands, so if you’re heading to Amsterdam and want to head to some of the cultural sights it’s well worth buying an I amsterdam City Card (starting at 65 euros for 24 hours). It gains you free entrance to the best museums and galleries, free travel within the city limits, and discount on food and a canal cruise. With or without the card, if you want to visit the Van Gogh Museum, be sure to book your slot in advance as it sells out fast. You can only visit the Anne Frank House by booking online beforehand.
  • There are 20 National Parks dotted all over the country that are beautiful, free to explore, and rich in various fauna and wildlife. Head to one for a walk or do as the Dutch and cycle.

Traveling from US to Amsterdam – Things to know before

US to Amsterdam travel

Before traveling from the US to Amsterdam, it’s advisable to find out as much as you can, prior to boarding your flight to Schiphol, especially if you are planning a short stay. For a long stay, you have more time to benefit from the advice of the folk on the ground—local residents and expats.

Passport and Visa

You do not need a Visa to visit the Netherlands if the length of your stay will be less than 90 days. Your passport must be valid for three months beyond your departure from the Netherlands. (Note that the Schengen area, in general, requests 6 months passport validity beyond departure from the region.) To stay longer that 90 days, make sure that the information you receive is correct and official.

Best time to visit Amsterdam

You may think that summer is the most favourable time to visit Amsterdam. However, there is one thing you will need to contend with then. You guessed it—the crowds. If sunny days and the beaches are important to you, then there are ways to circumvent long lines and heavy traffic. Start your day early, or, alternatively, start out late. Many visitors do find many advantages, however, in waiting till winter or spring.

Winter in Amsterdam

In winter, Amsterdam is refreshing both indoors and out. Between the museums, ice-skating rinks, and wonderful eateries, you won’t run out of activities. The Festival of Lights between November and January, is not to be missed.

Springtime in Amsterdam

Almost anything you do during the summer, can be enjoyed during spring. What you can only do during springtime, is to enjoy the tulip season , especially Keukenhof , which is closed during the other nine months of the year!

Where to stay in Amsterdam

There is no shortage of accommodation in Amsterdam. The trick is to find what you are looking for in terms of price range. The following is a list of sites that you can peruse:

  • Luxury accommodation
  • Where to stay when you’re on a tight budget
  • Weird and wonderful accommodation
  • A houseboat hotel at Hotelschip Gandalf

> Book the best hotels for cheap prices in Amsterdam

Getting around Amsterdam

Modes of transportation are many and varied.

1. If you can’t lick ’em, join them

We’re talking about bicycles. They seem to grow on trees in Amsterdam. There’s no need to defend yourself against the onslaught of bikes. Rent one yourself. Bike City is a company in the central Jordaan district. They rent bicycles that do not scream out, “I am a tourist!”. However, do learn the rules of the road before you set out. If you prefer touring with a group, look into bicycle tours of the city, for example, Mike’s Bike Tours .

2. Hop-on, hop-off canal bus

An excellent way of touring Amsterdam, with no time constraints, is to purchase a 24-hour ticket on the canal bus . Embark and disembark, between sightseeing and relaxing on a canal boat.

3. Trains, trams, and buses.

Amsterdam boasts a super-organised transportation system, making it very easy to get around without having to look for parking. It is not overly challenging to find out how to get from A to B. Various passes and discounts are available, and the 9292 site is a great source of help.

You won’t starve in Amsterdam

Whatever your taste in food or drinks, you’ll find it in Amsterdam. Many eateries have their own special ambiance, with their histories, décor, chef’s choices, international cuisine, locations, and entertainment. But one thing is clear. You must experience some Dutch cuisine while visiting. Don’t leave without tasting oliebollen, poffertjes, Dutch herring, and stroopwafel. Some of these delights can also be purchased at street stalls, bakeries, and specialty food stores.

Tip : If you’re looking for coffee, don’t head out to a coffeeshop (koffiehuis). Your cookies may be laced with cannabis. For coffee and beer, enjoy one of the many cafés in Amsterdam, many of which are on terraces, or alongside canals.

Applying for an entry visa for the Netherlands in the United States

If you are in the United States and your Dutch residence permit has been lost or stolen, or has expired, follow the steps below to apply for an entry visa.

Step 1: Check whether you need a visa

In some cases, you may not need a visa to return to the Netherlands. Select the situation that applies to you.

My residence permit has expired. Check whether you need a visa

My residence permit has been lost or stolen. Check whether you need a visa

Step 2: Gather the documents that you need

The checklist tells you which documents you need for your entry visa application.

Read the entry visa checklist

Step 3: Make an appointment

Once you have all the documents you need for your entry visa application, make an appointment with VFS Global in the United States.

How do I make an appointment?

Make an appointment online at VFS Global in the United States

  • Making an appointment is free of charge. Do not make an appointment with an intermediary because they will charge you money.
  • If you are applying for visas for multiple people, make a separate appointment for each person.

Can someone else submit my application for me?

You must appear in person at your appointment to submit your application, even if you’re under 18.

You don’t need to appear in person to submit your application if:

  • you have applied in person for a Schengen visa within the past 5 years (59 months), and:
  • you submitted a photo with that application, and:
  • your fingerprints were taken for that application (only applies if you are 12 or older).

If you meet all 3 conditions, you can have someone else submit your application for you. The appointment must be under the name of the person submitting your application.

If you are not certain whether VFS Global has your fingerprints on record, you should submit your application in person. VFS Global cannot check this for you.

How can I change or cancel my appointment?

To change or cancel your appointment, contact VFS Global in the United States .

Step 4: Go to your appointment

Go to your appointment at VFS Global, and bring all the documents on your checklist from step 2 with you, plus the checklist itself.

See the address of VFS Global in the United States

During your appointment

At your appointment you should:

  • submit the documents that are on your checklist together with your passport;
  • have your fingerprints taken (only if you are 12 or older);
  • answer questions about your trip;
  • pay the visa fee;
  • say whether you want to collect your passport (with visa affixed) or have it sent to you; and
  • receive a reference number to track your application.

The overview of consular fees in the United States tells you what your visa will cost. You will also need to pay a service fee to VFS Global.

Response to your application

Usually, you will receive an email in response to your application within 15 days. This may take longer in some situations. In that case, you will receive a response within 45 days.

Tracking a visa application

When you submit your application you will receive a reference number from VFS Global. You can use the number to track the status of your visa application online .

Step 5: Collect your passport or have it sent to you

You will receive an email once your application has been processed. The email won’t say whether your application was successful. You can collect your passport or have it sent to you. If your application was approved, the visa will be affixed to a page in your passport.

Have your passport sent to you

If you want to have your passport sent to you, you can ask during your appointment how to arrange this.

Collect your passport

If you want to collect your passport in person, you will be given a collection date during your appointment. You can also have someone else collect your passport for you.

If you collect your passport yourself, you must bring:

  • a valid identity document; and
  • the payment receipt provided by VFS Global.

If someone else collects your passport for you, they must bring:

  • a valid identity document;
  • a signed letter from you authorising them to collect your passport; and

Check the information on your visa

Check that all the information on your visa is correct, including your name and the validity period.

U.S. Relations With the Netherlands

Bilateral Relations Fact Sheet

Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs

September 6, 2022

More information about the Netherlands is available on the Netherlands Page and from other Department of State publications and other sources listed at the end of this fact sheet.

U.S.-NETHERLANDS RELATIONS

The U.S. partnership with the Netherlands dates to the American Revolution, with the “First Salute” of the USS Andrew Doria at Fort Oranje on Sint Eustatius. The United States established formal diplomatic relations with the Netherlands in 1782; one of our oldest, continuous bilateral relationships. Our excellent ties are based on close historical and cultural bonds as well as a common dedication to individual freedom, democratic principles, and human rights. The United States and the Netherlands share similar positions on many important issues and work together bilaterally and multilaterally in such institutions as the United Nations (UN) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The Netherlands was one of NATO’s 12 founding members in 1949. The Netherlands fought alongside the United States in the Korean War (1950-1953) and the first Gulf War (1990-1991) and has contributed to global peacekeeping efforts in the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Mali. The Netherlands played a leading role in the 1999 Kosovo air campaign and contributed to European Union (EU) peacekeeping forces in Bosnia. The Netherlands also supported and participated in NATO training efforts in Iraq, EU and NATO police training efforts in Afghanistan, the 2011 NATO mission in Libya, and in EU and NATO counter-piracy operations. A key NATO Ally, t he Netherlands has deployed troops to the Alliance’s eastern flank in response to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine . The Netherlands cooperates closely with the United States within the Counter-ISIL Coalition, and co-chairs the Coalition’s Foreign Terrorist Fighters Working Group , and is a party to all 12 UN counterterrorism conventions. The Netherlands works closely with the United States and other countries on international programs against drug trafficking and organized crime.

The Netherlands is a strong proponent of a rules-based international order and is a leader in democracy and human rights efforts. The Netherlands was a key partner in the December 2021 Summit for Democracy and a leading voice in the UN Human Rights Council (2019-2022). The Netherlands is also a founding member of both the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) and the Equal Rights Coalition (ERC). Reflective of its status as the “city of peace and justice,” numerous international judicial bodies and tribunals are hosted in The Hague.

Bilateral Economic Relations

The United States and the Netherlands share a firm commitment to market principles and free trade that is fair, inclusive, and promotes a race to the top. The Netherlands is a member of the EU and has worked with the United States in multilateral economic institutions including the World Trade Organization (WTO) , the World Bank, IMF, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to advance our shared democratic norms that underpin a more open, market-led global economy. The United States attaches great value to its strong economic and commercial ties with the Netherlands. The Netherlands is one of the largest investors in the United States, supporting over 8 00,000 jobs, and is the eighth largest importer of U.S. goods. The United States is the largest foreign direct investor in the Netherlands ( $885 billion in 2021 ) and has its second largest bilateral trade surplus in the world with this country ($18.2 billion in 2021). The United States works bilaterally with the Netherlands to promote and protect leading-edge technology and safeguard critical supply chains. The Netherlands is home to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AIX), one of the largest internet exchanges in the world, and to ASML, one of the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment producers. The Netherlands is committed to international cooperation to reduce greenhouse gases and combat climate change. The Netherlands participates in the Visa Waiver Program, which allows nationals of participating countries to travel to the United States for certain business or tourism purposes for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa.

The Netherlands’s Membership in International Organizations

The Netherlands and the United States belong to several of the same international organizations, including the United Nations, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, IAEA, FATF, Interpol, Australia Group, Wassenaar Arrangement, OECD, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, ICAO, WHO, and WTO.  A comprehensive list can be found in the World Factbook. The Netherlands is an observer to the Organization of American States given the Caribbean location of the Kingdom’s three constituent countries (Aruba, Curacao, Sint Maarten) and three special municipalities (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba).

USA ESTA Requirements for Citizens of the Netherlands

  • Simplified Application Form
  • Expert Application Review
  • Approved visa or money back

Citizens of the Netherlands are eligible to travel to the United States with the Electronic System for Travel Authorization ( US ESTA ).

This online travel permit is available to international visitors from selected countries and avoids the longer, more complicated process of applying for a visa .

The ESTA application is a very convenient and time-saving process that can be done online by completing a short form. It takes approximately 15 minutes to submit.

Be sure to apply for the ESTA before traveling to the US as a Dutch national.

Documents Required for the USA ESTA Application for Netherlands Citizens

Applicants must check they meet the visa requirements for Dutch citizens before initiating the US ESTA process. Dutch nationals must ensure they have the following items at hand:

  • Valid Netherlands passport
  • Frequently used email address
  • Credit or debit card

Dutch nationals are not obliged to have a passport valid for 6 months or more on the date they arrive in the US. As long as their passports are valid for their entire stay, they are perfectly eligible to apply for the ESTA . However, ESTA authorization will be granted for the passport duration or 2 years, whichever is earlier.

Additionally, Dutch citizens must ensure the card they intend to use has been previously authorized for online payments. They must also submit an email address that is frequently used . The confirmation email for the approved ESTA, and all other communication, will only be carried out by email.

What Is a USA ESTA for Netherlands Citizens and What Does It Do?

The American visa policy for international visitors details which entry permits are required by different nationalities for various purposes. Dutch visitors need to register with the ESTA if they are arriving by air or sea for short stays.

The US Department of Homeland Security introduced the ESTA in 2009 to travel to the United States for short term visits for tourism, business, or transit purposes .

Dutch passport holders are amongst the countries eligible to apply for the ESTA to travel to the US without needing a visa .

The US ESTA for Netherlands citizens is very advantageous compared to the standard visa application process. Dutch applicants can request an ESTA online from the comfort of their own home . You do not need to schedule an appointment at the US embassy in The Hague for an appointment, saving time and money in the process.

The   ESTA , once approved, is valid for 2 years . Dutch passport holders holding an American ESTA are allowed multiple entries to the US. They are authorized to stay for 90 days with each entry during these 2 years.

If you wish to stay in the U.S. more time, you will have to apply for a visa at the U.S. embassy or its consulate in the Netherlands. If you enter the U.S. on ESTA, remember that you are not authorized to alter your immigration status inside the U.S. You will have to leave the country and apply for the visa at the U.S. Consulate.

Application Form for the USA ESTA for Dutch Nationals

The application process for the USA ESTA is very simple, straightforward, and takes less than 15 minutes to complete. You need to provide the following personal information :

  • Home address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Emergency contact address and phone (optional)
  • Date of birth
  • Country of birth
  • Citizenship
  • Professional occupation

Next, you have to submit the following passport details :

  • Passport number
  • Passport issuance date
  • Passport expiry date

You then finalize the questionnaire by answering the following health and security questions :

  • Medical history
  • Security background
  • Any previous visits or stays in the United States of America

We strongly advise you to check all the information is true and accurate before submitting the form. Any mistake or typo could delay the approval or even lead to a denial of the ESTA if there are considerable inconsistencies between the form and your documentation.

American ESTA for Dutch minors

Underage travelers from the Netherlands must have an ESTA to visit the US. A separate application must be completed for each passenger, including infants. Dutch parents or guardians can complete their dependents’ form on their behalf and with a joint email address.

US ESTA Payment for Dutch Applicants

Once Dutch nationals have submitted all of their answers, they must cover the ESTA fee . As mentioned in the requirements section, you should make sure you use a card previously authorized for online payments and which carries sufficient funds.

How Will Dutch Citizens Receive Their USA ESTA?

The American Department of Homeland Security analyzes the applications once they receive them. The evaluation process is very quick and efficient and usually takes no more than 2 business days .

Once they confirm that the applicant meets the requirements and the authorization has been approved, they send a confirmation email. The ESTA is then automatically linked to the holder’s Dutch passport . Be sure to use the same passport for ESTA applications that you intend to use for travel to the U.S. if you are a citizen of more than one country.

Although you can apply for the ESTA up to 72 hours before departure, we advise applying in advance to avoid stress in the case of processing delays. Preferably as soon as you make your travel arrangements to the United States.

Traveling to the United States with an ESTA from the Netherlands

Visitors from the Netherlands are authorized to enter the United States with an ESTA without printing out a copy. The ESTA will be automatically viewed by border officials when the Dutch passport is scanned on arrival at air and land entry points. However, it is a good idea to bring a printed copy of the ESTA in case airline staff or border control officers ask to see it.

Dutch visitors should ensure their travel dates comply with their passport’s validity. It is also important not to stay more than 90 days per visit. Any violations of your immigration status in the U.S. may complicate your future travel to the country.

On the occasion where Dutch visitors might need to prolong their stay longer than the period granted, they can request an ESTA renewal . You should bear in mind that this option is only available outside the US. To obtain it, they must depart the country before re-entering with their renewed ESTA.

Note that if you already have an approved ESTA application that is valid for 30 days, you won’t be able to submit a new application. If any biographic information is not correct on the existing application or if any information has changed, then you must proceed with the new application.

When do I need to apply for a new ESTA?

You need to apply for a new ESTA if:

  • Your passport is new
  • Your first and/or last name has changed
  • Your sex has changed
  • You have changed your country of citizenship
  • Any of the answers on previous ESTA applications have changed due to other circumstances. This can include criminal charges, having a contagious disease or if a visa has been denied. In this case you must apply again for the ESTA and answer the questions taking into account these changes, or you may not be able to enter the US on arrival.

Some of the largest tourist destinations include the more famous cities such as New York, Orlando (Disney World), Las Vegas, San Francisco, Boston, Charleston, Chicago, and Washington D.C. Many of the national parks can also get quite crowded, especially Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and others on the highly traveled southwestern loop of national parks. Furthermore, many beach areas can be very busy, especially in the summer. For a less touristy experience, it's possible to visit other cities and smaller towns which still offer scenic beauty and fun activities.

The Netherlands is a destination which hosts plenty of visitors. Amsterdam in particular is extremely popular with tourists, and many parts of the city can be quite crowded most of the year. On the other hand, other cities in the Netherlands enjoy significantly less visitors and offer similar cultural and historic activities without the crowds. When we compare the travel costs of actual travelers between the USA and the Netherlands, we can see that the United States of America is more expensive. And not only is the Netherlands much less expensive, but it is actually a significantly cheaper destination. Since the USA is in North America and the Netherlands is in Europe, this is one of the main reasons why the costs are so different, as different regions of the world tend to have overall different travel costs. So, traveling to the Netherlands would let you spend less money overall. Or, you could decide to spend more money in the Netherlands and be able to afford a more luxurious travel style by staying in nicer hotels, eating at more expensive restaurants, taking tours, and experiencing more activities. The same level of travel in the United States of America would naturally cost you much more money, so you would probably want to keep your budget a little tighter in the United States of America than you might in the Netherlands.

What Is the Netherlands Known For?

Wondering what The Netherlands is famous for? This incredible country is famous for so many iconic things…find out what!

I had the opportunity to visit Amsterdam last month and it was an absolute dream! It’s been somewhere I’ve wanted to go for years, but has always eluded me. I was so grateful to be able to go with some girlfriends for a week and we had the best time after months of careful planning. Check out all the things to do in Amsterdam here.

Sandwiched between Germany to the north and Belgium to the south, the Netherlands shares many cultural traits with its neighbors. If you’ve never been fortunate enough to visit this relatively small country, you might wonder, exactly what is the Netherlands known for?

This is the short answer: a lot! The Netherlands has a long history dating back to the Ice Age. Through the Middle Ages, it was known as Frisia by the Vikings and was part of Middle Francia during Charlemagne’s reign.

Finally, the Kingdom of the Netherlands became its own independent, entirely Dutch country in 1813. While it’s not all been plain sailing, the nation continues to climb from strength to strength as a liberal, beautiful, and unique country. And it’s only a little bigger in size than the US state of Maryland!

Amsterdam, the country’s most famous city, is at the center of the Netherlands’ prestigious artistic history. The country is covered in bike lanes to accommodate cycle-mad citizens, lush farmland and flower fields, and street food carts that serve delicious local treats.

Some of the other things the Netherlands is known for are much more eyebrow-raising, unconventional, and surprising. Learning more about them in this guide will give you a deeper insight into the culture and history of this minuscule yet mighty Western European nation.

35 Cool Cultural Things the Netherlands Is Known For

1. growing and exporting most of the world’s tulips.

One of the most beautiful places in the Netherlands is also one of the most popular tourist attractions, and that’s Keukenhof. It’s the world’s largest flower garden in Lisse and displays one of the Netherlands’ most important industries.

The Netherlands is known for growing around 90% of the world’s tulips and exporting more flowers than any other nation in the world. These multi-colored blooms have been an important fixture in the Dutch countryside since the early 1600s. ‘Tulip mania’ caused the prices of these popular flowers to shoot up (no pun intended) and almost wreck the Dutch economy.

Today, these beautiful Netherlands flowers attract over one million annual visitors every spring. As an icon of Dutch culture, tulips often appear on postcards, Dutch calendars, magnets, and anything you can get your hands on at a tourist market.

2. Over 1,000 Historical Windmills

What is in the Netherlands, the countryside in particular, apart from tulips? Windmills! Centuries ago, there were over 9,000 windmills dotted around the country and they are one of the top things the Netherlands is known for.

In the years since, that number has dramatically decreased to only around 1,200 historic windmills but that’s still more than any other country worldwide. The structures still standing represent the country’s long history with windmills that were needed to pump water away from flooded farmland or grind grain to produce flour.

Kinderdijk, near Rotterdam, is one of the most beautiful parts of the Netherlands and is home to some of the most recognizable windmills. But the most famous windmill in the Netherlands is De Adriaan in Haarlem, only a few km outside Amsterdam.

3. The Capital City of Amsterdam

Speaking of Amsterdam, the Netherlands is famous for its bustling capital city. Around one million people call Amsterdam home but almost 20 million tourists visit this beautiful city every year.

Named after the River Amstel which flows through the city, some of the most popular tourist attractions in the country are in Amsterdam’s city center. There are many museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, and Body Worlds.

Not only are there several cultural institutions but it’s an objectively attractive city with beautiful canals lined with tall townhouses with stepped gable roofs. Flower markets, cheese markets, and festivals fill the events calendar of this most famous city every week and it really does offer something for all types of travelers. This won’t be the last time Amsterdam appears on this list!

4. Delicious Dutch Cheese like Gouda and Edam

So, what food is the Netherlands known for? It isn’t one of the top culinary hotspots in Europe like Italy or France, but Dutch cuisine is still unique. One of the most traditional food staples in the Netherlands is Dutch cheese.

Farmland in the Netherlands is very wet and fertile, yet humid. Some crops, like maize, cannot thrive in these conditions but grass can. High-quality grass produces high-quality cheese!

Gouda is the most famous cheese in the Netherlands, closely followed by Edam, Maasdam, Boerenkaas, Leyden, and some other varieties. There are still traditional cheese markets in the town of Gouda where the namesake cheese was invented. These types of cheese tend to be mild and creamy which is why these traditional cheese markets are crowd-pleasing and popular with locals and tourists alike.

5. Dutch People are the Tallest in the World

What are the Dutch known for that might surprise you? Well, Dutch people are apparently the tallest in the world.

The average Dutch person at the age of 19 stands at 6 ft/182.9 cm for men and 5.6 ft/169.3 cm for women. This means, overall, Dutch people stand 5 ft 8 inches/175.62 cm tall.

While there is no conclusive region why a Dutch person is more likely to be taller than people from other nations, there are theories. Scientists think wealth, good diets, and quality health care all play a role in the height of a Dutch person.

People from Montenegro, Denmark, Norway, and Serbia stand almost as tall as a Dutch person as they take the other four spots in the top five. If you’re a shorty, don’t be tempted to wear your heels when visiting the Netherlands. They also favor cobblestone streets and sidewalks!

6. Heineken Is the World’s Second-Largest Beer Company

Germany might be more synonymous with beer thanks to its popular Oktoberfest, but the Netherlands is famous for having one of the most successful beer companies of all time. Heineken was founded in Amsterdam in the late 1800s. Today, they brew in over 70 counties including the Netherlands.

But it’s not just Dutch beer under the Heineken brand. Around 300 craft, international, and regional beers are part of the Heineken family. If you like Dutch beer and want to learn more about the history of Heineken, you can visit the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam.

7. UNESCO World Heritage Site of Amsterdam Canals

There are 12 UNESCO-certified sites in the Netherlands and they cover a range of things the Netherlands is famous for. Some are towns, local agricultural practices, and nature preserves. But arguably the most popular world heritage site is one of the Netherlands’ famous landmarks, the beautiful canals of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam has 165 canals covering 100km of waterways with over 1,500 bridges linking 90 islands. The canal ring that surrounds the city center (made up of five rings of canals) is specifically what became a world heritage site in 2010. This district dates back to the 17th century and was essential in the transportation of goods and people at this time.

Not only is the canal ring of high historical importance, but they are also breathtakingly beautiful canals. The townhouses that surround the canals are some of the priciest properties in the country and the bridges, flowerboxes, and cobblestone streets all add to the charm.

8. Post-Impressionist Painter Vincent Van Gogh

The Netherlands is known for many iconic figures in history like sportspeople, philosophers, and filmmakers but the famous Dutch painters stand head and shoulders above them all. One of the most prominent is Vincent Van Gogh, an artist who was born in the Dutch town of Zundert in 1853. While not famous and recognized during his lifetime, he would become one of the most influential people in art history.

Some of the most famous paintings by Vincent Van Gogh include Starry Night, The Bedroom, Sunflowers, and Van Gogh’s Self Portrait. Starry Night can be found at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and the Self Portrait is in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

Luckily, the best institution that displays a prolific number of his works is the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. It has the largest Vincent Van Gogh collection in the world with over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 750 letters in the permanent collection of the Van Gogh Museum.

9. The Dutch Golden Age from 1588 to 1672

For almost 100 years, the Dutch were pioneers in the worlds of art, trade, and science. Their military was amongst the best in the world and the Netherlands is famous for overtaking Spain and Portugal’s power during the Dutch Golden Age.

One of the reasons why the Dutch were so successful is due to their map-making and sailing skills. Back home, artists like Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Vermeer, and Frans Hals firmly put themselves on the proverbial map of the art world too.

10. Traditional and Colorful Dutch Wooden Clogs

Out of all the things the Netherlands is known for, wooden shoes might be the quirkiest! You cannot enter any souvenir shop in the country without seeing them on a fridge magnet or walk down the street without a comically huge pair outside a storefront. They’re often painted colorfully with other iconic Dutch things like windmills or tulips, but real wooden clogs were much more modest in real life.

This traditional footwear dates back to the 1300s when farmers and peasants wore wooden shoes to protect their feet from the elements. The Netherlands is a very wet country and can become cold in the winter, so wooden clogs were a cheap solution to keep out the rain, snow, mud, and manure.

If you think that wooden clogs look cute and want to buy yourself a pair to wear, you might want to think again. They are moderately comfortable walking on flat ground for a short period (and you can easily slip them on and off!) but most don’t offer arch support. Traditional wooden shoes only had a thin piece of leather as a sole too, so they’re better for display purposes only.

11. Holland Is a Common Misnomer of the Netherlands

What is Holland known for and is it the same as what the Netherlands is known for? Not quite! Noord Holland and Zuid Holland (north and south) are only two regions in the country of the Netherlands, which has 12 regions in total.

Because most tourists only visit these two regions, ‘Holland’ is often used to refer to the entire country. The Netherlands has been its name since the early 1800s, but Emperor Napoleon did briefly make his brother Louis the King of Holland for four years prior to the country’s independence.

Whether or not Dutch people get annoyed by people referring to the entire country as ‘Holland’ will depend on who you ask. As a rule, it’s better to use the Netherlands (or Nederland). So, if you’re reading this guide for interesting Holland facts, you’re probably looking for the Netherlands’ interesting facts.

12. Amsterdam’s Infamous Coffee Shops

Not all things the Netherlands is famous for are family-friendly. There’s a good reason why Amsterdam attracts so many students, young couples, and bachelor/bachelorette parties, and that’s cannabis.

In certain neighborhoods in Amsterdam, there are coffee shops that sell marijuana products to locals and tourists. If you visit the Dutch capital, it’s important to note that ‘coffee shops’ sell cannabis, and ‘cafes’ sell hot drinks, pastries, and everything you would expect to find in a regular cafe back home.

You might be surprised to learn that it’s illegal to possess, produce, or deal soft drugs like cannabis in the Netherlands. Trafficking is also illegal, so coffee shops have to acquire cannabis secretly and illegally too.

However, Dutch authorities have tolerated cannabis for personal use since the 1970s. Coffee shops are able to sell cannabis products for people to consume onsite with no consequences.

13. Rotterdam Is the Unofficial Second City

The six largest cities the Netherlands is known for are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven, Utrecht, and Groningen. That makes Rotterdam in South Holland the country’s second city.

While Amsterdam is known for its art history and centuries-old townhouses, Rotterdam is a 21st-century city with modern architecture and skyrise buildings. Some of the key structures are the Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam Central Station, and the Euromast Observation Tower which offers panoramic views of this beautiful city.

Rotterdam is also known for its maritime heritage and has a great reputation as a foodie city.

14. One-Third of the Netherlands Is Below Sea Level

One of the things the Netherlands is famous for is the country’s flat, wet farmland. Figuring out why can be determined by answering the question, where is the Netherlands located? Well, it’s mostly situated at or below sea level!

Vaalserberg is the highest point in the whole country and it’s only 1,056 ft/322 m tall. Around one-third of the Netherlands measures lower than the sea line and the other two-thirds aren’t much higher. The country’s sea defenses are so incredible that the Dutch Water Defense Lines are actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Schokland and Surroundings is also a UNESCO site as this area includes land reclaimed from the sea in the 1940s after it was flooded and abandoned. The Netherlands has an ongoing battle against flooding and it does an awesome job of keeping everyone in the country safe and in their homes.

15. Amsterdam’s Infamous Red Light District

Coffee shops aren’t the only infamous thing the Netherlands is known for. Most coffee shops are located in Amsterdam’s De Wallen neighborhood, better known as the Red Light District.

These districts are usually urban areas with a high concentration of sex workers and other similarly themed shops, theaters, and clubs. There’s no math to determine which European city has the most notorious or popular Red Light District, but Amsterdam’s has to be pretty high!

Unlike cannabis which is merely tolerated by local law enforcement, prostitution is legal and regulated in the Netherlands.

Don’t get the wrong idea that Amsterdam is a hotbed of debauchery and family-unfriendly activities! De Wallen is a really small neighborhood in the Centrum district and super easy to avoid. If you’re visiting with kids, you probably won’t be checking out the local nightlife scene anyway.

16. First Country to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

One of the more positive things the Netherlands is famous for is that it was the very first country to legalize same-sex marriage. The Dutch Government paved the way back in 2001. It took two years for another country, Belgium, to follow suit. The United States wouldn’t make gay marriage legal nationwide until 2015, a staggering 14 years later.

The Netherlands has a great track record of being welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community and 90% of the population are in favor of gay marriage. If you identify as part of the community, definitely consider booking a trip to the Netherlands!

We visited what is supposedly the first gay bar in the world, open since 1927, which is in Amsterdam, called Cafe ‘t Mandje. It was also used during WWII as a base camp for the resistance. It is still run by the same family. The tolerant atmosphere and historic interior have been preserved, complete with photograph-pasted walls, neckties hanging from the ceiling, a jukebox with old-time music, and an antique pool table. Even if you aren’t part of the community, it’s still worth stopping in! Everyone was friendly and happy to see us.

17. The Netherlands’ National Color is Orange

Most countries’ national colors correspond to those on the flag. For example, the USA, France, and the UK have red, white, and blue as their national colors because they all have red, white, and blue flags.

The Netherlands’ flag also consists of red, white, and blue but the national color is orange. This color is a source of Dutch national pride and the population in the Netherlands is known for wearing orange on King’s Day or Koningsdag in Dutch. This is the current head of the Dutch Royal Family and Monarch’s birthday.

At the moment, King Willem-Alexander is on the throne and his birthday is April 27th. His daughter, Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange, was born on December 7th and is his heir apparent. If she becomes Queen, that is when Queen’s Day will be celebrated.

18. Are French Fries Actually Dutch?

When visiting any Dutch city, you’ll realize there are a lot of food trucks or carts selling French fries. The Netherlands is famous for its love of this delicious fried potato snack. Locals douse their cones of fries in mayonnaise rather than ketchup.

But are French fries really French? Their origin story is up for debate.

Fries are first mentioned in 1775 in a Parisian book. However, a Belgian journalist stated that potatoes were deep-fried in the Meuse Valley around 1680.

While the Netherlands definitely did not invent the French fry, it’s possible that a Dutch country did! It’s not surprising that people in the Netherlands enjoy eating lots of fries regardless of their origins.

The fries were good, but I couldn’t stomach all the mayonnaise squirted on top! I was done after a few bites.

19. Sweet Treats Stroopwafels and Poffertjes

Aside from Dutch cheese and beer, what are the Netherlands known for in the culinary world? Famous Dutch cuisine tends to be snacks or singular food items rather than entire dishes. The sweet treats that the Netherlands is known for follow this trend!

Stroopwafels (translates to ‘syrup’ waffle) consist of two thin, round cookies with a caramel filling pressed together in a waffle iron. Founded in Gouda around the late 18th century, it wasn’t until 1870 that stroopwafels began to appear in other Dutch cities. Today, they are a popular snack and are sold by street food vendors.

Poffertjes are small, fluffy pancakes usually topped with powdered sugar and served with butter or syrup. Traditionally, they were an Easter or Christmas treat (they’re popular at German Christmas markets) but now you can find them year-round.

20. Dutch Artist Rembrandt’s Night Watch Painting

The Netherlands is famous for producing some exceptional artists like Van Gogh. But possibly even more revered than Vincent Van Gogh in Dutch culture is Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. Born in 1606, he is one of the most famous Dutch painters of all time and is known as one of the Dutch Masters during the Golden Age.

Rembrandt wasn’t just one of the Netherlands’ famous painters but he was also a printer and draughtsman. Some of his most famous paintings include The Storm on the Sea of Galilee, The Jewish Bride, and The Return of the Prodigal Son.

Rembrandt’s most famous painting is undoubtedly The Night Watch. It’s located in one of the best art galleries not only in the Netherlands but in the world, the Rijksmuseum. Night Watch was under restoration while we were there, but it was still cool to see. It’s huge!

There are many works by other Dutch Masters in the Rijksmuseum including Hendrick Avercamp, Frans Hals, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Johannes Vermeer. There are other famous painters from around the world featured in this art museum, but it’s the go-to place to see paintings by Dutch Masters in real life.

21. Best Non-Native English Speakers in the World

Around 28 million people speak Dutch, the national language of the Netherlands, worldwide but few speak it as a second language. That’s not a problem for English speakers wanting to visit the land of windmills and tulips! The Netherlands is known for being the home of the best non-native English speakers in the world.

Around 95% of the Dutch population speaks English to some degree of fluency. In fact, moving to the Netherlands and learning Dutch tends to be difficult for new expats as the Dutch are often so keen to practice their English skills.

22. World’s First Stock Market and Stock Exchange

Believe it or not, one of the things the Netherlands is famous for is building the world’s first stock market. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange was founded in 1602 and is still running today.

Its inception was largely influenced by the incorporation of the Dutch East India Company, which is often referred to as the first multinational company. Different equities began trading and buying shares and people could become shareholders in companies for the first time. Today, the Amsterdam Stock Exchange is called Euronext and the Dutch East India Company was dissolved in 1799.

23. The Netherlands was Neutral in the Second World War

Switzerland is the most notorious country in Europe for remaining neutral during the second world war, but the Netherlands is known for being a neutral country too. One of the main reasons is that, like Switzerland, they simply did not have the military power to join the war.

The Nazis occupied the Netherlands in World War II in 1940 which the Dutch army did attempt to fight but they lost within five days. The Dutch were liberated partly in 1944 and wholly in 1945 by Canadian, British, Polish, Dutch, and American troops.

24. The International Court of Justice is in The Hague

If you’re ever accused of a serious international crime (though I sincerely hope you’re not!), then your case might be tried in the United Nations’ International Criminal Court. The Netherlands is famous for running and organizing this international court, court of justice, and peace palace in one of its biggest cities, the Hague.

Binnenhof, a 16th-century building in The Hague, is where you’ll find the Dutch Government. It might surprise you to learn the government doesn’t sit in the capital, Amsterdam. This official government building stands out amongst the modern architecture and skyrise buildings that surround it in this modern, dynamic city.

25. Popular Tourist Attraction the Anne Frank House

One of the most popular tourist attractions in not just Amsterdam but the entire country is the Anne Frank House. Anne Frank was a young Jewish Dutch girl who hid from the Nazis in a secret annex with her family and other Jewish families in World War II.

So much of her tragic story is known because she kept a diary throughout her two years in hiding. Her father published her journal entries after her death in a concentration camp in 1945. The Anne Frank House is now a museum and many of the rooms still look how they would have during Anne’s time there.

This attraction is easy to find in Amsterdam’s city center by the canals near Westerkerk. If you are visiting Amsterdam and want to check out the house, you must book tickets long in advance as they sell out.

26. The Dom Tower Is the Country’s Tallest Church Tower

Rotterdam’s Zalmhaven Tower is the country’s tallest building at 705 ft/215 m, but it’s the Dom Tower that is one of the things the Netherlands is famous for. This church tower in the city of Utrecht stands 369 ft/112.5 m tall.

The tower is part of St Martin’s Church which was built between 1321 and 1382, so the tower’s height was very impressive for this period. It’s also impressive that no other church built since has surpassed it!

The Dom Tower, like the rest of the church, has an ornate, Gothic design. You can climb up to the top of the tower with a guide and witness beautiful panoramic views of the city.

27. Johannes Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring Painting

Johannes Vermeer might be one of the most famous painters of the Golden Age, but it’s this famous painting that the Netherlands is known for. He was a Dutch Baroque painter born in Delft and his most revered painting, by far, is Girl With a Pearl Earring.

It’s an iconic work because of the use of light and the positioning of the girl. The fact he painted the figure from his imagination is also unique as most paintings of people at this time were portraits of real people.

Scarlett Johansson starred in a movie of the same title in 2003 which has allowed modern audiences to become reacquainted with this masterful work. It is part of the permanent collection in the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague which boasts many other works by Dutch Masters.

28. Being the 5th Most Densely Populated Country in Europe

Many countries with dense populations are city-states or micro countries with Macau, Singapore, and Hong Kong being great examples of densely-populated countries. Being the 5th most densely-populated country in Europe behind Monaco, Gibraltar, Malta, and San Marino is one of the things the Netherlands is famous for.

The Netherlands is 16,158 mi² and has around 17.5 million residents. Comparing it to the US state of Maryland’s 12,407 mi² and six million residents, that’s quite a huge difference! One of the best facts about Holland is that South Holland is one of the world’s most densely populated areas.

However, you might not think this was the case if you were to visit the Netherlands. It still has vast areas of woodland, nature reserves, farms, and fields.

29. The Netherlands Boasts More Bicycles Than Residents

The Netherlands is known for its bike-loving citizens and excellent cycling infrastructure across the entire nation. This country adores cycling so much that there are far more bikes within its borders than people.

Around 22.5 million bikes live in the Netherlands compared to 17.5 million people. Even accounting for rental bikes, that’s a lot!

30. Bizarre Stereotypes of Dutch Women

Type ‘Dutch women’ into Google and you’ll find article after article of tips on how to meet, date, marry, or be like women from this country. Apparently, the Netherlands is famous for producing some of the most superior and sought-after women in the world!

News articles and tips will state that women from the Netherlands are tall and blonde with blue eyes. They are supposedly confident, unique, independent, proactive, interesting, and a slew of other positive adjectives.

Of course, women from all nations have diverse external traits and appearances. But the Dutch female population isn’t likely to take much offense at being widely known as confident and interesting.

The question is, why do such stereotypes exist?! Unfortunately, there’s no obvious answer. It may have something to do with how women in the Netherlands were painted way back in the Golden Age as well as the high levels of gender equality in the 21st century.

31. Iconic Delftware Ceramics from the City of Delft

Aside from clogs, other common and quintessential Dutch things made by local craftsmen are Delftware ceramics. The Netherlands is known for this iconic style of art and dinnerware and has been since the 17th century.

This style of glazed ceramics had iconic, handpainted blue-and-white designs. The paintings would be of flowers, windmills, and other typical Dutch scenes.

Sometimes, pottery might look like Delftware without being the real deal. Real pottery from the city of Delft will have ‘handpainted in Holland’ or ‘Delft Blue’ written on the bottom.

32. Amsterdam Dance Event Annual Music Festival

While the Netherlands is known for its historic buildings and museums, the Netherlands is famous for its love of clubs, music festivals, and electronic dance music too. One of the biggest dates in the electronic music calendar is the Amsterdam Dance Event. Hosted every year in October, this is a huge, city-wide event that takes over most of the main music venues in the capital for five days.

It’s been running every year since 1996 and shows no signs of slowing down. If you’re into electronic dance then it’s not to be missed, but if you don’t then avoid traveling to Amsterdam during the festival to avoid high accommodation prices!

33. Fictional Cartoon Rabbit Miffy by Dutch Artist Dick Bruna

Belgium has Tintin, Finland has the Moomins, so what is the Netherlands known for in the European cartoon world? Miffy! Dutch artist Dick Bruna created and published the first Miffy book in 1955 and there have been around 30 others published since.

She also appears in games, coloring books, TV shows, and movies. There are plush toys of the white rabbit with an ‘x’ for a mouth as well as tons of other merchandise, too.

In Dutch, she’s called nijntje which literally translates to ‘little rabbit.’ Many confuse Miffy with the Japanese cartoon rabbit Sanrio’s Cathy who is the best friend of Hello Kitty, but Miffy is the original.

34. Soccer is the National Sport and is Widely Played

Like virtually every other country in Europe, the favorite sport of the Netherlands is soccer (or voetbal /football). The national team’s nickname is Oranje and the players wear bright orange shirts.

For such a small country, the track record is surprisingly high. The team has won the European Championships twice and made it to the final of the World Cup three times.

Some of the most famous Dutch people are soccer players. Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Edwin van der Sar are all Dutch sporting heroes.

But the sport is played and beloved by more than just the professionals. Approximately one in 16 people in the Netherlands play soccer either for fun or professionally.

35. Philosopher and Scientist Rene Descartes

Even though Descartes was born in France and died in Sweden, he spent most of his life living in the Dutch Republic (as it was known at the time). He even served in the Dutch States Army and was a central figure in the intellectual side of the Golden Age. Rene Descartes was perhaps one of the most famous Dutch people to exist who wasn’t an artist.

He is most famous for his ideas on natural philosophy and the role he played in the scientific revolution. His most famous statement was, “I think, therefore I am” and his book Meditations on First Philosophy (1641) is still widely read today. It’s no wonder why the Netherlands would adopt someone of Descartes’ status as their own!

What Is the Netherlands Famous For? All This and More!

It’s surprising just how many world-renowned institutions, creative thinkers, lively cities, and historic events the Netherlands can boast. While it shares a language with parts of Belgium, an appreciation of beer with Germany, and a love of soccer with the rest of Europe, it well and truly holds its own.

The Netherlands makes 10 million euros available for maritime corridor to Gaza

News item | 19-03-2024 | 15:03

The Netherlands will contribute 10 million euros to the renewed initiative to get aid into Gaza by sea. The Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Geoffrey van Leeuwen, announced this in Cyprus during a visit to the port of Larnaca on Tuesday. The contribution will go into a fund to be set up by the United Nations, Cyprus, the European Union, the United States and other international partners. The fund will be used to facilitate the provision of aid to Gaza by sea.

The minister said, ‘The people of Gaza urgently need a lot more food, water and medicine. The Netherlands urges all parties to expand access over land, which is the most effective and efficient way to get large amounts of aid into Gaza. But until this can be done, we will continue to explore all possible options. We are already contributing by means of air drops, and now of course we’re also facilitating the delivery of aid by sea.’

As well as visiting the port, the minister also went to see the location where goods can be inspected before being loaded onto ships once approved by Israel. He also spoke with representatives of the centre that will coordinate aid contributions from the various countries. ‘It’s very important to hear at first hand from the Cypriot authorities and other partners how the preparations for the corridor are progressing and what problems they are encountering in practice,’ the minister said.

Since the start of the conflict, the Dutch government has pledged an extra €56 million for humanitarian aid for Gaza. That is in addition to the annual amount of €51 million that the Netherlands provides for development cooperation and humanitarian aid for the Palestinians. The Netherlands also makes annual contributions to UN organisations and the Red Cross, thus indirectly supporting their efforts in Gaza as well.

Follow a mile-by-mile map of the total solar eclipse

On April 8, the sun, moon and Earth will enter the precise alignment of a total solar eclipse. The moon will block the sun, casting a shadow across a strip of North America from the Pacific Ocean west of Mexico, through 15 U.S. states, to the Atlantic off Canada.

This strip, roughly 4,000 miles long and 115 miles wide, is called the path of totality. For a short while, everyone and everything in this path will experience midday darkness.

The beginning

2:07-2:11 p.m.

Total time eclipsed

Cloud icon

Historic cloud coverage

The moon’s shadow makes landfall in Mexico at 2:07 p.m. Eastern time, casting the first region into darkness. Here, darkness lasts for about four minutes near the center of the path, but decreases in time toward the edges.

A populous path

Nearly 32 million people live in the path of totality this year. The eclipse crosses the homes of more people in Texas alone than the 2017 eclipse crossed nationally.

Eagle Pass, Tex.

2:27-2:31 p.m.

The eclipse crosses into the United States in Eagle Pass, Tex. The border town will be dark for 4 minutes and 23 seconds — over a minute longer than the 2017 eclipse lasted anywhere.

2:35-2:39 p.m.

A 195-mile stretch of Interstate 35 between Austin and Dallas is in the path. Texas officials are already warning drivers not to stop on roadways during the eclipse. You'd have to drive 1,950 miles an hour to keep up with the moon's shadow.

2:40-2:44 p.m.

The nation’s second busiest airport, Dallas Fort Worth International, lies in the path of totality. The airport said flights will not be affected. Some airlines are even offering special flights timed to the eclipse to extend your time in totality.

Hot Springs National Park

2:48-2:53 p.m.

In Arkansas lies Hot Springs National Park, one of two national parks in the path of totality. Parks across the country, even those not in totality, are planning livestreams, shows and talks for the eclipse.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways

2:55-2:59 p.m.

Just like many humans, Smokey Bear is also traveling into the path of totality. A 97-foot-tall hot air balloon bearing Smokey’s face is traveling from New Mexico to the Ozarks to remind visitors how to prevent wildfires.

Carbondale, Ill.

2:59-3:03 p.m.

Just past the Mississippi River is Carbondale, Ill., which has billed itself the “Eclipse Crossroads of America” because it sat in the path of the 2017 eclipse.

Check the forecast

At this point in the path, the weather forecast becomes critical for eclipse seekers. The areas from here on are typically cloudier in April than the previous areas, according to an analysis of cloud cover data.

3:13-3:17 p.m.

The eclipse crosses the Cleveland Guardians’s baseball stadium on the team's home opener at about 3:15 p.m. But rather than be interrupted by nearly four minutes of darkness, the game will start two hours after the moon’s shadow passes by.

An influential eclipse

The eclipse next passes over land historically populated by the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois. Researchers disagree on when the Iroquois Confederacy was established. But tribal oral history indicates the Seneca joined the alliance shortly after witnessing a solar eclipse, which researchers suggest occurred in this area in 1142.

Burlington, Vt.

3:25-3:28 p.m.

About 13,000 schools are in the path of totality, including more than 300 in Vermont. Some plan to incorporate experiencing the eclipse into their lessons, but others plan to let kids out of school early to help avoid traffic bottlenecks.

Piscataquis County, Maine

3:30-3:34 p.m.

The final 150 miles of the Appalachian Trail lie in the path of totality, including Mount Katahdin, the highest point in Maine.

Gulf of St. Lawrence

3:32-3:35 p.m.

The eclipse finally passes over Prince Edward Island before its last hurrah over Newfoundland in Canada, completing its North American journey in a bit more than two hours.

Totality at 2:07 p.m. EDT
