Har Ki Dun Trek Itinerary

Day 1 drive from dehradun to sankri.

Drive: 190 km, 8 hrs

Altitude Gain: 2,100 ft – 6,725 ft

Accommodation: Cottages/Guest House

Meals: Dinner

We start the journey early from Dehradun and drive initially to the famous hill station of Mussoorie. After just over 100 km, we pass close to the temple of Lakhamandal. According to locals, Duryodhana of the epic Mahabharata conspired to burn the Lakshagriha house of the Pandavas in this area. Damta, Purola, Mori and Netwar are some of the other villages on the route. We follow the river Yamuna upstream.

The river Kamal Ganga merges with Yamuna near Naugaon and accompanies us till Purola. Purola is the last big settlement on the route with a large market. So, it is recommended that the trekkers can buy anything they might have missed out by Purola itself. It also is the last village where most of the mobile networks work.

The drive after Purola is through a beautiful forest of pine trees. In some distance, on top of a hill we can see the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya overlooking the valley. From near the village of Mori, the river Tons flows beside us till about Netwar. The fall in temperature can be felt from here. We officially enter Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary after we cross a check post at Netwar. It can be considered the southern gateway to the sanctuary as most of the treks across the region are accessed from here onwards.

The northern border of the sanctuary merges into Himachal Pradesh. Close to here, the rivers of Rupin and Supin merge to form Tons, which is the largest tributary of Yamuna and in fact larger than Yamuna itself, in terms of volume of flow. The peak of Kedarkantha can be seen from various points along the way from here.

We reach Sankri by early evening. It is a small village with a central market lined with a few shops. The village has numerous apple orchards which are harvested starting from late summer. The market area is new compared to the old village area, a part of which is known as ‘Saud’. The village also produces peach, apricots and potatoes. One can see the Swargarohini peak from here on a clear day. We rest at night in a guest house or in camps.

Day 2 Sankri to Puani Garat

Drive: 10 km, 1 hr

Trek: 10-12 km, 5-6 hrs

Altitude Gain: 6,725 ft – 8,270 ft

Accommodation: Alpine Tents

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner

treks near dehradun

Since the journey is long, we start as early as we can in the morning. After breakfast, we board an SUV and drive through a forest road. The drive is quite bumpy. The vehicle crosses one or two streams on the way. We reach Taluka in about an hour. It is a small village with a few shops and two Government guest houses. The trek commences from here on a stony path.

The fragrance of cedar trees can be felt around Taluka. Sometimes during winters, or especially during periods with rather heavy spells of rain, the road to Taluka may be too dangerous for vehicles, as streams run across the road and thus one may be required to walk a stretch of around 8 km up to Taluka, albeit it is only occasional.

We walk close to the river Supin gushing through rapids. Under the shade of walnut, pine, and cedar trees, the walk is quite pleasant. In autumn we can often find walnuts lying around. One must avoid “bichchu ghas” which literally translates to ‘scorpion grass’. A slight touch can give us a stinging sensation which lasts for about twenty to thirty minutes. This herb is also cooked as a vegetable and eaten. Often the passing villagers greet us on the way. High up above on the true left, we get to see the village of Datmer. It is lined by a series of step farms. The farms have the bright red colored Cholai growing from late monsoon to early autumn.

The path crosses over a few streams which merge with Supin. After a few hours of walking the village of Gangad can be seen towards the left, across the river. It is possible to come across a yellow-throated marten in the forests of this area. We can also find edible fruits of seabuckthorn. They are orange in color and grow in bunches. Also, known as ‘leh berries’, the juicy and sour fruits are a rich source of Vitamin C. We continue our trek and soon we reach the secluded campsite at Puani Garat.

Day 3 Puani Garat to Boslo

Trek: 10 km, 5-6 km

Altitude: 8,270 ft – 10,830 ft

Accommodation: Alpine Tent

treks near dehradun

Today we start the day by heading up towards Osla village, which is located on a sloping spur about a hundred meters above the river Supin. The initial trail to Osla is the steepest section along the entire trek and can take 30-40 mins to cover. The landscape surrounding Osla is full of terraced farms. The colors of these lands differ in every season. The red farms of Cholai (Amaranth) look amazing and can be seen from the late monsoon.

This grain is a powerhouse with its rich nutritional values and a favorite among the locals. Apart from these Kidney beans in wide varieties are cultivated in the area. Osla is the last village on the route to Har ki Dun. From Osla the trail gradually rises higher and we cross a few fields, while the river can be seen far below. We come across a temple some distance below the trail towards the right. We pass through bushes of flowers like orchids, fleece flowers and sunflowers.

The journey today is rather short, which gives the opportunity to acclimatize to the high altitude and prepare for the next days journey. We can take a breather basking in the sun at the beautiful campsite of Kalkatidhar. The ban to camp at Har Ki Dun has had a rather positive outlook to the trekking itinerary, as it allows for more comfort & at the same time preserves the natural beauty of Har Ki Dun.

Day 4 Boslo to Har ki Dun & Marinda Tal, return to Boslo

Trek: 15-17 km, 7-8 hrs

Altitude: 10,830 ft – 12,530 ft – 10,830 ft

treks near dehradun

The day’s trek can be considered to be rather long as we today visit Har Ki Dun and Marinda Tal, a small lake formation due to the obstructing boulder across the river stream, which lies 2 KM further ahead of Har Ki Dun. As we start the trek, at a short distance a hidden and roaring waterfall is encountered with a small tea shop beside the waterfall.

The ascending path offers stunning views above the confluence of the Supin and Ruinsara rivers. From here, you can admire the snow-clad peaks of Ruinsara Valley, notably Black Peak, the highest in the area. To the north, the Har Ki Dun valley unfolds in the distance, with a clear view of the Forest hut. Continuing higher on the right of the river, you enter a final stretch through a beautiful forest. Emerging from the woods, you arrive at Har Ki Dun’s main camping area, nestled beside a babbling stream. This panoramic spot sits at the junction of two valleys, one originating from Jaundhar Glacier and the other beyond Hata Glacier, offering a breathtaking natural spectacle.

Higher up towards the North we can spot the Forest Rest House, while the wood-crafted GMVN guest house lies further up in the distance. The Har ki Dun peak stands tall right in front of us behind the Forest Rest House. Towards its left, Hata peak which is usually snow-covered can be seen. The minor ridge to our right, lined with a few scattered Himalayan birch trees Bhojpatra separates us from the massive Har Ki Dun valley that goes up all the way to the base of Swargarohini Peak. The paper-like bark of these trees was used in ancient times to write religious scriptures.

The vast open meadows following the course of the Supin River can be explored. Further ahead of the meadows one can walk among the forests of Bhojpatra trees (Himalayan birch) or get a closer glimpse of the Jaundhar glacier and Swargarohini peak, for which we will have to head upwards the Har Ki Dun valley, towards the Swargaroini peak in the eastern direction.

We can choose to relax and soak in the environment for some time or we can continue our trek to Marinda Tal, in the north, just 2-3 km away from Har ki Dun. The trail is gradually ascending here. It is a small lake formed by a huge boulder obstructing the river which flows down from the base of the Borasu Pass.

treks near dehradun

After our short visit to Marinda Tal we make our return journey back to Kalkatidhar. We take the same route and it becomes much easier as its all downhill from here. We reach back by early evening and rest at the campsite.

Day 5 Boslo to Puani Garat

Trek: 10 km, 4-5 hrs

Altitude Loss: 10,830 ft – 8,270 ft

treks near dehradun

The journey back to Osla is an easy walk. On the route we come across a good view of the trail all the way to Osla and see the valley descend towards Taluka, around the curve of the ridge where the two streams comng from Har Ki Dun and Ruinsara respectively, converge. A little short of this intersection we can get a glimpse of a trail to our left marked by a sight of a bridge down over the stream.

This trail goes to join the trail to Ruinsara lake and is rarely taken. After reaching Osla, one can roam about in the village, talk to locals and soak in the Garhwali culture. We continue our journey from here to our earlier campsite of Puani Garat where we can spend time basking in the sun.

Day 6 Puani Garat to Taluka and Drive to Sankri

Trek: 10 km, 5 hrs

Altitude Loss: 8,270 ft – 6,725 ft

treks near dehradun

Early in the morning, post breakfast we set out from this beautiful abode as we start trekking through the same trail we trekked along on Day 1, towards Taluka. Although the views seem different as the perspective changes significantly trekking downhill. The walk takes lesser time than before and is enjoyable. We walk to the true left of the River Supin until we finally arrive at Taluka, from where a vehicle takes us back to Sankri. We retire for the day in camp alongside the river or in a guest house in Sankri.

Day 7 Sankri to Dehradun

Distance: 190 km, 8 hrs

Meals: Breakfast

Journey Ends: Arrive in Dehradun between 5 and 7 PM

treks near dehradun

The trek to Har ki Dun concludes today as we leave Sankri. The drive up to Mori through the unique lesser-touched regions is still amazing. The stretch right after crossing Mori town is still the prettiest along the entire journey, albeit the new hydel project has put the fragile environs at increased risk in this area. Rafting and Kayaking which was earlier prevalent here are no longer feasible. Regardless the beauty of the region remains to a significant degree. After crossing the towns and finally Kempty-Mussoorie, we reach Dehradun by late afternoon or early evening.

Day 2 How difficult is the trek & what are the challenges?

Me and 3 more friends of us went with Himalaya Shelter for a 6 day Har Ki Dun trek. We were fortunate enough to have the owner of the company itself Bachan as a guide, and throughout years of trekking in different places I’ve never had a guide that would be taking care about us as the guests as he did. The communication before we arrived was in point to make sure that everything will be covered, everything was very well organised, trek itself has amazing scenery, plus Bachan and the guys cooked us super tasty food every day. The company uses quality equipment and in the end they were really nice guys to sit down and have a chat with in the evening. There was nothing bad I could add here, definitely can recommend those guys 10/10.

We did a unique trek covering Kedarkantha, Phulara ridge, and Har ki doon with Mr. Bachan Rana, Raghav, and team. The trek route itself was absolutely gorgeous, covering 3 distinct ranges with some of the most alluring forests I’ve visited. But what made the whole experience even more amazing was the professionalism and care displayed by the H.S. team.

Some key points:

1. The food was top notch. I’ve been trekking for over a decade and a half now so I know when organizers attempt to cut corners in the fooding aspect – and these guys didn’t. The quality was good, and there was never an issue with the quantity. Shoutout to Mr. Dinesh for his great recipes!

2. They were very professional in the entire process of setting up camp – pitching and unpitching tents, clearing up, etc.

3. They were quite cooperative for our various requests. Given we were a big team, we often had requirements with mule support, demanded flexibility in timings, etc. The H. S. team was always forthcoming and punctual.

4. Probably most importantly – they CARE! And I don’t just mean about the trekkers or tourists – but about the place, about nature, about the wellbeing of the villagers, about the mules that support them. I think that genuine concern they had was great to see, and I think it enriches everyone’s experience.

Would definitely recommend them for your treks and trips in Uttarakhand!

Deoban Trek near Chakrata- An Unwind in the Laps of Nature!

Deoban Chakrata, wow! Somehow the name itself is so alluring. Having visited Dehradun umpteen times during my growing years, I am quite familiar with the names Deoband, Tapovan, Anand Van, and Deoban.

While Deoband is a small town in district Saharanpur, Tapovan and Anand Van are lush green covers in the heart of Dehradun.

But, what about Deoban? Well, the name Deoban is a combination of Deo meaning Deodar, and Ban translating to forest. Therefore, Deoban literally means Deodar forest . And true to it's name, the entire Deoban trekking trail is dominated by Deodar trees, which is quite a rare sight in Uttarakhand.

So, if you are seeking an escapade amidst the wilderness of Uttarakhand then Deoban Chakrata Trek is your ideal bet. It is also called the Deoban Trek.

Deoban trek chakrata

About Deoban Trek

Among the many treks near Dehradun, one of the most opulent treks is the Deoban Weekend Trek. This rare expedition flatters the trekkers with some amazing Garhwal mountains and the wild beauty of Uttarakhand. But what makes this trek so popular?

Well, it is the proximity of Deoban Chakrata Trek, the trek is just a few hours from Delhi. No wonder, backpackers, hikers, and trekkers love flocking this trek route for a quick unwind!

Within two days, one scales an altitude of almost 9,300 feet while relishing the views of mammoth Himalayan ranges such as Mt Srikanth, Mt Bandarpoonch, Mt Swargarohini, the Gangotri massif, Mt Nanda Ghunti, and also Nanda Devi. For the unversed, Nanda Devi is the tallest mountain in India that lies entirely in India. And can you imagine that on a bright sunny day, you catch glimpses of 55 Himalayan mountains, that’s a coliseum of grandiose ranges!

The Deoban Trek snakes through the forested trail flanked by the mighty Deodar trees. While traversing the trek route, the sunlight peeks through the lush canopy and creates a unique mishmash of shadows on the trail. This picture-perfect panorama makes for a hit Instagram story.

Deoban Trek Route with attractions

  • Mountain views- On a clear sunlit day, Deoban Chakrata Trek offer astonishing views of almost 55 mountains from its highest point. This amphitheater of Himalayan giants is the most exclusive gem of the Deoban Trek as one rarely spots so many mountain-ranges even on a 7-day trek, let alone a 2-day trek.
  • Deodar trees- Usually in other treks, except the ones in Kashmir, the trekking trails have a mix of mountain trees. But, Deoban Trek is highlighted with Deodar trees with sporadic pines and oaks; you journey through an entire trail of the incredible Deodar trees. Most of the divine Deodar trees are as old as 600 years.
  • Chakrata- This epic cantonment town of the British era still retains its colonial appeal. For historians and lovers of British architecture, the vintage charm of Chakrata is a pivotal point of attraction. Chakrata lies between the Tons and Yamuna rivers; it also has the famous Tiger Falls, some ancient caves, and templesthat boast connection with the Mahabharata.

Deoban Trek Distance

The total distance is 193 km. This includes both the driving and trekking distance. The 90 km scenic drive from Dehradun to Lokhandi village in Chakrata forested area takes around 4 hours. One can visit Deoban all year round. However, the best months to embark on Deoban Weekend Trek are between April to June (spring and summer) and September to November (fall). Deoban Chakrata temperature remains salubrious in these months and is ideal for comfortable outdoor activities. The views are great against the backdrop of crystal-clear skies.

The peak winter months from December to February are frigid cold with temperatures falling below 0°. Sometimes, the trails are still covered with snow until March. The monsoon months of July and August experience heavy rainfall and should therefore be avoided.

Conclusion:

Nag Tibba Trek

If you think about a short hike near to Delhi or Dehradun, then Nag Tibba trek is almost a certain choice. Nag Tibba in local Garhwali means Serpent’s Peak. This is the highest point in the region, which is locally called Mussoorie range. Geographically its in the lesser Himalayas range inside Uttarakhand. Nagtibba top, standing at an impressive altitude of  of 3020 m/9905 ft offers surprisingly good view of the snow capped peaks straight to its north. Some easily recognised ones are Swargarohini and Gangotri peaks, Kalanag, Bandarpoonch and Srikantha. To reach the top you’ll cross dense sub alpine forest, sudden openings of sprawling meadows and some short ridge walks.

This place is accessible all over the year apart from the months of monsoon. The region gets decent amount of snowfall in winter. This comparatively easy trek is an excellent choice for beginners. Nagtibba opens up a window for those who don’t want to invest too much time and effort but are interested to know how it feels to spend nights camping in wilderness, away from the amenities and comforts offered by civilisation.

We've Opened A New Weekend Trek Near Dehradun!

Category News

By Swathi Chatrapathy

W e’re back again with another new trek! This time, it’s the Deoban weekend Himalayan trek near Chakrata, not too far from Dehradun.

If you’ve kept a tab on our website, you’ll know that our team has been exploring multiple trails of late. We have opened a trail in a new state altogether — the terrific jungle trek in  Chhattisgarh . Then the new  Mukta Top  trek near Uttarkashi.

But we have also not opened many others. Because not every trek lends itself to the criteria we have for treks: variety in scenery, a few highlights that are exclusive to that trek, camping grounds that make you feel good and a challenge for your legs.

That is why the Deoban trek is one of our best discoveries this year – See the trek details  here .

Our Trek Leader, Tanmay Bain, was stunned when he went on the trek. “You climb just for a few hours and there are nearly 55 Himalayan peaks at your eye level,” he says.

And just as he says, if you stand at the Deoban summit, there are  actu ally   55 peaks in the distance. Of course, you need an extremely clear day to see all 55 peaks, but if there aren’t any clouds you’ll see lots of them.

Highlights of the Deoban Weekend Trek

Mountain views.

It’s rare for any weekend trek to give you such brilliant views with such a short climb. Usually, it takes days of climbing to see so many peaks. But on the Deoban Trek, you see these peaks after climbing just around 8 km. And guess what, you’ll even see Mt Nanda Devi, India’s highest summit.

You also see Mt Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Srikanth, the Gangotri range… Phew the list is really long! But I think this picture from Peakfinder will give you an idea.

I’ve also uploaded  a page with all the mountains you can see on this trek .

Lovely Deodar Forests and Clearings

But don’t go there for just the mountain views. Our Trek Leaders are going gaga over the forests too. The trek gets its name from the forests itself. “Deo” refers to the ancient deodar trees of the region and “ban” means forest. The entire region has deep dark forests, that burst into sudden clearings. You actually camp in one of these clearings.

Easy accessibility from Dehradun

The Deoban Trek is very close to Chakrata (24 km away). Chakrata is one of those hill towns in India that still have the splendour of being hill towns, but thankfully don’t attract noisy crowds.

But you know what’s really exciting us? It is just 3 hours away from Dehradun. Which means less winding mountain roads to deal with. Not only is the road journey short, it is beautiful to boot!

What to Expect On The Trek

  • This is a  2 day trek . You start your drive from Dehradun on Day 1, drive to the base (Koti Kanasar) and trek to the campsite the same day.
  • You  climb to the Deoban summit on Day 2 in the morning  and come back down to the base. You’ll reach Dehradun by 7 pm or 8 pm.
  • The trek is an easy-moderate one. You  cover 19 km over two days . You need good fitness to do this trek.
  • There are  not too many steep sections, but there are long distances.
  • The trek starts at 7004 ft and climbs to a  highest altitude of 9279 ft .
  • Even though it’s very close to Dehradun, it’s going to be very cold. You will need at least  4 warm layers  on this trek.
  • For the best mountain views, trek here in winter months of  December, January and February .

When are we running the trek?

We have opened two dates in December.  Unfortunately, we have just two dates as of now.

Our trek leaders are so caught up with our regular winter treks that we couldn’t free them for more teams on this trek. I would advise early planning for this trek. I expect the groups to get full in a couple of days.

Find the dates here.

Watch the video below to know more about the trek

Meanwhile, we made a quick video with our founder about the trek. He gives you a wonderful overview of the trek and tells you what to expect.Watch it here.

So that’s our happy announcement this week. If you have any questions about the Deoban trek, drop in a comment. We’ll write back to you!

PS: If you’re a landscape photographer and would like to cover the  Deoban Weekend Trek  as a photo trekker, then write to Hari, our Photo Editor, on [email protected]. Send him 15 of your best landscape photographs. If you’re selected, we’ll sponsor your trek from Dehradun to Dehradun.
