However, Miranda Galati, MHSc, RD , cautions that you’re unlikely to experience any massive health transformations just from drinking greens powders, as greens powders don’t replace an overall healthy diet and lifestyle . Even though these supplements can’t replace a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, they can still be a convenient way to get extra nutrients into your diet , says Sauceda.

The strong and pleasant fruity flavor comes from organic apples, stevia, monk fruit, and mint, with no added sugars .

The biggest downfall to the supplement was the texture, although it wasn’t a deal breaker. While it had an overall smooth texture when mixed with water, there was a slight graininess to it, and a few clumps left over in the bottom of the glass.

While it’s only one type of green, broccoli microgreens have powerful plant compounds including glucosinolates, which research has found may reduce the development and growth of various cancers like prostate, breast, skin, urinary, and colon cancer.

If you like the taste of broccoli, you’ll like the taste of this greens powder. The serving size is a meager ¼ teaspoon and when mixed with water adds no texture, just the faint smell and taste of broccoli. While it was enjoyable in a glass of water on its own, it would also mix well with soup, smoothies, or other beverages since the flavor was so light and mild .

One serving of this greens powder is the equivalent of ¾ cup of fresh broccoli microgreens, according to the manufacturer. While you could feasibly eat this much per day, microgreens are difficult to keep fresh unless you’re sprouting them yourself at home, and are considered a high-risk food related to the extensive number of salmonella outbreaks commercially sold sprouts have had in the past.

The bioactive compounds in moringa have been found to play a beneficial role in diseases like high blood pressure, insulin resistance, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and inflammation while baobab is an exotic fruit rich in antioxidants and inflammation-fighting properties.

There’s no mistaking the smell and taste of this powder. It looks green, smells green, and tastes green, grassy, and earthy. The recommended serving size is a two teaspoon serving in four ounces of water for a “wellness shot”, and we found that the powder mixed incredibly well, with no gritty texture or sediment left behind. Each serving has only 20 calories but also includes two grams of fiber, which is uncommon for greens powders, and definitely an added bonus.

The more we stirred this powder into the water, the thicker the consistency got, most likely due to the addition of tapioca oligosaccharides in the digestive adaptogens and prebiotics blend.

While this formula has plenty of beneficial ingredients like wheat grass, chlorella, celery, and kale, it also has some herbal ingredients that could potentially interact with medications or could be dangerous if you have certain health conditions. Therefore, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional before taking this if you are on any medication. Amazing Grass Greens Blend (original flavor) had us thinking we were sipping a glass of matcha from the coffee shop, the flavor was that close. If you already enjoy and drink matcha tea, this greens powder will feel like a treat, with the added benefit of antioxidants, fiber, and digestive support in each serving. However, you may notice the texture for this powder. After stirring for one minute, it was grainy and left clumps of powder in the bottom of the glass. 

Each scoop of Amazing Grass Greens Blend has 30 calories , a green food blend, an antioxidant blend, three grams of fiber from flax seed and apple pectin, and a blend of digestive enzymes, prebiotics, and probiotics . While this supplement claims to support a healthy digestive system, some people could experience digestive stress instead due to the enzymes and prebiotics added, says DeLaurentis.

We like that this pick is a protein powder that doubles as a greens powder , as it includes greens like moringa leaf, spinach, spirulina, chlorella, broccoli, and other whole food ingredients.

One serving also has 40% of the DV of iron , 14% DV of sodium, 15% DV of potassium, and 8% CV of calcium, which makes it an ideal drink post-exercise when you need extra hydration and protein.

To get the whole 20 grams of protein, you need two scoops of powder, which were difficult to blend well into 8 ounces of water like the package directed. The result was quite chalky and the flavor was very earthy, which wasn’t ideal. Therefore, we recommend blending this powder into a smoothie, as frozen fruit and other ingredients could make the texture and flavor more enjoyable.

Sprout Living Epic Protein Greens is USDA-certified organic , vegan, Kosher, and free from grains, soy, gluten, and nuts, making it an allergy-friendly supplement. They state on their website they do third-party testing on their products.

  • Vibrant Health Greens: We appreciate that this product is third-party tested, is an excellent source of probiotics, and includes amounts of each ingredient used, but the taste and aftertaste were very bitter. 
  • Mindbodygreen organic veggies+: We love that this greens powder is third-party tested, but it was difficult to mix into water. There were several clumps we couldn’t incorporate and a thick layer of powder at the bottom of the glass. 

Should You Take Greens Powders?

Some people benefit from taking greens powders —but they definitely aren’t for everyone. While they can be a fun way to get extra nutrients, they’re not necessary for most people and definitely not something you’d want to rely on as a main source of nutrients, says Sauceda. Here are some scenarios in which they might be helpful.

  • You’re a picky eater.  If you have a tough time including a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet, greens powders can make it simple to get a nutrient boost. The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends 1.5-2 cups of fruit and 2-3 cups of vegetables a day. If you’re not meeting this, greens powders could help fill in some nutrient gaps, says DeLaurentis.
  • You’re traveling . Eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables while on the road is tough, and many greens powders are available in travel-size packs that make it convenient to add to a bottle of water while traveling, says Sauceda. Even though you’ll get a boost of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, you’ll still want to find fiber-rich snacks and meals , since most greens powders are low in fiber. Even though there are potential benefits, experts agree that you don’t need to stretch your budget to drink a greens powder. Whole fruits and vegetables, including frozen and canned, are more nutrient-dense, filling, and satisfying while also being budget-friendly, says Galati. When it comes to safety, there are plenty of people who may want to skip greens powders or check with their doctor before trying them.

Be cautious of using these supplements if:

  • You have a medical condition. Many greens powders include a long list of ingredients, including herbs and adaptogens, that could be dangerous for people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disease, or kidney disease. Most powders don’t disclose the amount of each ingredient used, so it’s difficult to determine if the amount of a specific ingredient would be enough to interfere with your health.
  • You take any medications. Herbal products and excess amounts of vitamins and minerals can interact with medications from birth control to blood thinners and antidepressants. If you take any medications, be sure to speak with your pharmacist or doctor before taking any supplement, especially a greens powder.
  • You have a sensitive stomach. If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or experience bloating or gas, greens powders could make your symptoms worse, says Galati. Many powders include “digestive blends” that have ingredients like inulin or broccoli powder, which could aggravate a sensitive digestive system, she adds.

How Greens Powders Are Made

To pack all of the vegetables, herbs, and fruits into a greens powder, many supplements freeze dry and dehydrate whole foods, or use extracts of various herbs and adaptogens. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as freeze-drying plants could help retain 93% more carotenoids, 34% more vitamin C, and 11% more phenolic compounds than heat-drying, although most greens powders don’t disclose which drying process they use.

Plant extracts, including herbal extracts, are made by dissolving the plant matter in a solution specific to the plant to concentrate the various beneficial compounds in each plant. Extracts are not standardized, which is one of the reasons third-party testing for purity and potency is such a valuable selling point for these products.  

Ingredients: What to Pay Attention To

It is essential to carefully read the ingredient list and nutrition facts panel of a supplement to know which ingredients and how much of each ingredient is included, relative to the recommended daily value of that ingredient. Please bring the supplement label to a healthcare provider to review the different ingredients contained in the supplement and any potential interactions between these ingredients and other supplements and medications you are taking.

One of the most common ingredients in greens powders is—you guessed it—greens. While for many people this is a benefit, people who take blood thinning medication may want to steer clear of greens powders. Many of these supplements are high in vitamin K, a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in blood clotting. People who take blood-thinning medications, like Warfarin, need to maintain consistent vitamin K intake and greens powders could impact the medication’s effectiveness. 

How Much Greens Powder Should You Take? 

There’s no standard dose or formula for greens powders, and while some manufacturers include the dietary reference intakes (DRIs) on the label for the vitamins and minerals found inside, not all have these detailed labels. 

For vitamins and minerals, only vitamin D, potassium, calcium, and iron are required to be listed on the nutrition facts panel, so it can be impossible to know exactly what you’re getting with each supplement.  

How to Take Greens Powders

Instead of popping a supplement in a capsule or pill, greens powders are made to be mixed with water, milk, a smoothie, soup, or even enjoyed in baked goods. The most common (and often manufacturer-recommended) way to enjoy greens powder is mixed with a glass of water or milk (plant-based or dairy). 

You can drink greens powders any time of day, unless there are added ingredients, like caffeine, that would be better in the morning, or melatonin or tart cherries that may be better suited for evenings. 

Potential Benefits of Greens Powders 

Many greens powders are naturally rich in chlorophyll , the pigment responsible for fruits and veggies rich green hues, and include important vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and even biotin, which can have a range of benefits to support immunity, metabolism, and cell health, says Galati. If you have undiagnosed vitamin insufficiencies, greens powders may help you feel more alert and energized, she adds. 

These supplements can make it easy to get greens like spirulina and chlorella, which are high in antioxidants and nutrients, but aren’t typically found in American grocery stores. Some are also fortified with probiotics, which could help to diversify your gut microbiome, especially if you aren’t regularly eating probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, or sauerkraut. However, note there is not a standard dose and type of probiotic supplement best for everyone, and probiotics are not always recommended .

Are greens powders good for you? 

Greens powders can supplement your diet with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, but experts don’t recommend that you use them to replace whole fruits and vegetables in your diet. Whole fruits and vegetables are often more nutrient-dense, satisfying, and cost-effective, says Galati.

Is it safe to take greens powders? 

For people who are healthy and take no medications, greens powders are most likely to be safe, although every formulation is different and the ingredients and nutrients added can vary. If you have any medical condition, allergies, stomach sensitivities, or take any medications, greens powders should be taken with caution, and checking with a healthcare provider is recommended.

Are greens powders worth it? 

The greens powders on our list range anywhere from $0.50 to $4.50 per serving, with the average cost per serving around $2. Some greens powders may be able to replace multivitamins or protein powders, which adds value. Since many greens powders include little to no calories, fiber, protein, or other key nutrients, fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables may be a better use of a limited food budget.

“The grassy flavor you get with most greens powders is mild here,”  our tester says, giving this an overall 4.5 out of 5 for flavor.  “It’s a pineapple vanilla flavor that’s tasty but light, so it can mix well with other ingredients or alone.”

Athletic Greens also has a stand-out ingredient label. One serving gives you more than 100 percent of your daily vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin B12, among others. Considering it’s packed with so many crucial vitamins and nutrients in high doses, our testers gave the formulation a 5 out of 5.

I have to use an electric stirrer when mixing my scoop, and even then, it tends to settle since I like to sip my greens throughout the morning. So, I had to give the solubility a 3.5 out of 5 but so long as you keep a straw in your glass, manual mixing does the trick.

According to  Gianna Masi, RDN , a registered dietitian and certified personal trainer, the NSF Certified for Sport label is something athletes should prioritize.  “When I’m working with professional or collegiate athletes, I especially want to make sure I’m providing tested products such as ‘NSF Certified for Sport’ or ‘Informed Choice for Sport,’ so I don’t impact their eligibility in addition to their health.”

You get about 30 servings per container, but the bag costs $79, making it $2.63 per serving. Most other greens powders are just over $1 per serving, so we gave Athletic Greens a 1 out of 5 for price per serve. Fiber can promote good digestion, helping you to feel fuller for longer. “Most greens powders actually lack this ingredient,” says  Gianna Masi, RDN , a registered dietitian and certified personal trainer. But with this supplement, you get about 21 percent of your daily value. 

If digestive regularity is a challenge, Prebiotic Greens is a good pick. You get six grams of fiber per serving, plus a blend of probiotics for digestive health. However, it does lack any info on the actual nutrients you get with these ingredients, earning this product a 2 out of 5 for formulation.

“I really enjoyed the Peach Mango flavor,”  one of our product testers said, giving the taste a 4 out of 5.  “The flavor is definitely sweet but not too much and still a little earthy.”  However, one of our other product testers found the flavor too grassy and needed to be mixed with orange juice. Flavor is a personal preference, so it really just depends on what you like.

This one earned a 4.5 out of 5 for solubility because our testers had zero issues when mixing the supplement with water. It dissolved easily, and you didn’t need to consistently stir as you sipped the drink.

Let’s be totally honest: Greens powders taste, well, very green. For most greens powder supplements, getting past the earthy flavor is a challenge. But that wasn’t our experience with the Live It Up greens powder. After sipping this product for six months, our tester gave the overall flavor a 4.5 out of 5.

“The Original flavor is kind of like mint,”  our tester said.  “I’d say it definitely tastes as described. At first, I thought the flavor was a little overwhelming but after drinking it more, I actually really enjoyed it.”

Overall, we liked the formula here, too. Live it Up’s formula has more than 20 natural superfoods, including chlorella and spirulina. You also get more than 50 percent of your daily recommended value of vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B9, and vitamin B12, among others. However, we don’t love that the brand uses proprietary blends.

“Live It Up Greens scores a 2.75 out of 5 in the formulation category,”  according to Chelsea Rae Bourgeois, RDN.  “It contains a small amount of plant-based protein, whereas many other greens powders do not. However, its nutrient content leaves you wanting more based on the cost per serving and many ingredients are part of proprietary blends.”

We also had a little bit of issues with solubility, giving this category a 3 out of 5. According to our testers, the product leaves some powder at the bottom of the cup no matter how much shaking they did. A blender may solve this issue but we understand that not everyone has time to whip up a smoothie every time they want to sip this supplement.

“Even if the label says equal to 4 servings of vegetables, I wouldn’t accept that as someone’s daily vegetable consumption,”  she explains.  “I’m still going to encourage real food sources due to the bioavailability (how much gets absorbed) and fiber content.”

2. Know Why You’re Buying

As you can see, greens powders can have many different focuses: antioxidants, digestive health, and adaptogens, to name a few. Do some research and know the strengths and weaknesses of your product before you commit.

3. Consult With Your Doctor

Different Ways to Take Greens Powders

Don’t think you have to just mix greens powders into a glass of water and slam it (though you can). Here are a handful of creative ways to get in your greens (powder).

"Not all greens powders are third-party tested, so it is especially important for athletes that may be drug tested to avoid using greens powders without proper third-party testing," says Osburn. Look for one that is NSF Certified for Sport , one of the most rigorous third-party testing certifications.
  • People with digestive disorders : Many greens powders contain ingredients that can worsen digestive problems. People with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who have trouble digesting certain carbohydrates, known as FODMAPs, may have trouble with greens powders. "Greens powders may contain FODMAPs like inulin or FODMAP-rich ingredients like some fruits and vegetables," says Akhaphong. Probiotics and other prebiotics can also worsen some digestive symptoms. If you are going to use a greens powder, "review all ingredients to ensure there aren't any added probiotics or prebiotics that could worsen your symptoms," says Suzie Finkel, MS, RD.
  • People taking other vitamin and mineral supplements : If you're taking a multivitamin or other vitamin or mineral supplement, check to make sure that you won't be consuming too much of any one nutrient. Most nutrients in supplement form (including in greens powders) can cause negative—or even dangerous—side effects when you consume too much. Review the Tolerable Upper Limits set by the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements .

A Note of Caution with Alfalfa and Lead

Most greens powders contain alfalfa as a primary ingredient. Although people believe alfalfa to be helpful in treating many diseases, from diabetes to high cholesterol and digestive issues, there is no research to support this.

Regularly consuming high doses of alfalfa can be dangerous, especially for people with autoimmune disorders. Consuming high amounts of alfalfa may not be safe for pregnant or breastfeeding people as well as anyone with hormone-related conditions like breast cancer and endometriosis.

Alfalfa has also been shown to interact with anticoagulant medications, hormonal birth control, diabetes medications, and immunosuppressants.

Another potential concern with greens powders is lead. Lead is naturally found in many foods including green, leafy vegetables. Third-party tested greens powders will test for safe lead levels. However, it's important to note some third-party tested greens powders are still not recommended for regular use during pregnancy or for young children because they have a lower tolerance for lead. Therefore, always check with a healthcare professional if you are pregnant or before giving a greens powder to a child.

What to Look for in Greens Powders

Third-party testing.

Supplements that are third-party tested  are sent to a lab where they are tested for purity and potency to ensure they contain what they say they contain and do not contain any potential contaminants. Trusted third-party certifications include ConsumerLab.com, NSF, USP, and Informed Choice. However, these certifications can be difficult to obtain and expensive for manufacturers, so many companies choose not to get their products tested. If you are selecting a supplement that does not have third-party testing, we recommend choosing a trusted brand that does rigorous internal testing.

There is concern that some greens powders could be contaminated with heavy metals such as lead. In fact, when ConsumerLab.com tested 16 greens powders, they found high levels of lead in two products. The amount in these products was lower than the FDA standards for adults but higher than the much more stringent level that California proposition 65 puts forth, requiring a lead warning label. Children and pregnant people are more susceptible to the potentially harmful effects of consuming high levels of heavy metals.

Greens powders could also contain ingredients that are banned in high-level competitive sports, so finding one that is third-party tested specifically for sport, such as NSF Certified for Sport , is important for any competitive athlete.

Greens powders are typically a mix of powdered leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, and extracts, and can also contain seaweed (like spirulina), probiotics, enzymes, herbs, and some have the addition of protein powder. While some powders contain high amounts of vitamins and minerals, there isn't research to understand the bioavailability (how much your body can absorb) of these nutrients in this form. It could be more or less than eating fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables.

Ingredients & Potential Interactions

It is essential to carefully read the ingredient list and nutrition facts panel of a supplement to know which ingredients and how much of each ingredient is included relative to the recommended daily value of that ingredient. Please bring the supplement label to a healthcare provider to review the different ingredients contained in the supplement and any potential interactions between these ingredients and other supplements and medications you are taking.

There are dozens of greens powders on the market to choose from. And while it may seem like they all offer similar benefits, many of them contain questionable ingredients or are not third-party tested by a reputable organization. Because greens powders have not been thoroughly researched and do not contain standardized ingredients, we are very selective with the brands we recommend. It's important to be aware some ingredients in greens powders may warrant caution including:

Adaptogens : Greens powders that have adaptogens may warrant caution for those on medications, are pregnant, or breast feeding. For example, reishi mushrooms may interact with blood pressure medications, diabetes medications, and certain cancer treatments. Rhodiola or ashwagandha may interact with several antidepressants, blood pressure medications, diabetes medications, thyroid medications, cholesterol medications, immunosuppressants, and many other drugs that are broken down in the liver. We suggest talking with a healthcare provider before taking supplements with adaptogens if you take any medications—even ones not listed here. In addition, the safety of adaptogen supplements during pregnancy and breast feeding is not well known.

Digestive enzymes : In general, digestive enzymes provide no benefit to healthy people. While more research is needed, digestive enzymes also appear to provide little to no benefit to those with digestive disorders unless there is a known enzyme deficiency. "Digestive enzymes are best suited for those with diagnosed enzyme deficiencies such as lactose intolerance or other known digestive conditions that may cause symptoms like gas or bloating after eating certain foods. If you have been diagnosed with any of these conditions, taking a separate digestive enzyme supplement that targets your specific issue is recommended," says Finkel.

Probiotics : Many greens powder contain low levels of probiotics —about the amount you'd find in yogurt (though doses vary). While you may have heard that probiotics are beneficial, there are many different types of probiotics, and currently, no clear recommendations around which strains, strain combinations, or doses the general population may benefit from taking. "We do not have good evidence of any benefits of probiotic supplements for general health. Specific probiotic strains have been clinically shown to improve a small number of gastrointestinal conditions, but these are not the bacteria you would find in a powdered greens product," says Finkel. That said, probiotics can make some digestive conditions worse, so consult with your healthcare provider before taking a supplement that contains probiotics.

Always speak with a healthcare professional before adding a supplement to your routine to ensure that the supplement is appropriate for your individual needs and to understand which dosage to take.

There is no standard dosage for greens powders, and ingredients and nutrient amounts can vary significantly. It's important to review the Recommended Dietary Allowance and Tolerable Upper Limits as set by the NIH for each ingredient to make sure you are consuming safe levels of each nutrient. Your body filters and eliminates excess water-soluble vitamins (B vitamins and vitamin C), so it's less likely these nutrients will cause harm. However, it is still possible to experience negative side effects from very high doses of these nutrients in supplement form. In addition, fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) can be stored in fat tissue and are dangerous when consumed in excess. Many minerals can also be dangerous in very high amounts.

People taking multiple supplements are at higher risk for exceeding the Tolerable Upper Limits of vitamins and minerals. You can review your greens powder and any other supplements you are taking with a healthcare provider to ensure you are not exceeding the upper limits for any nutrient as established by the  NIH Office of Dietary Supplements .

Greens powders can provide many important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can support health. They also may contain ingredients, such as spirulina and chlorella, that are primarily found in powder form and may offer some health benefits. The specific ingredients found in powders can vary significantly from one brand to another, and so do the potential benefits.

In short, we don't know. There has been little research done on greens powders as a whole. The limited research that does exist doesn't suggest that they offer as many benefits as eating whole foods, but more research is needed.

What we do know is that there are synergistic effects to eating whole foods. This means that the nutrients in whole foods work together, so you get more health benefits from eating foods in their natural form than you get from taking supplements.  "While greens powders can help increase your fruit and vegetable intake, don't count on them to completely replace whole foods. Most don't contain all of the vitamins and minerals you need," says Osburn.

One area where many greens powders fall short is in the fiber content. Greens and other vegetables provide fiber, which offers numerous health benefits, from better digestion to lower cholesterol. Fiber—when consumed from whole foods—is also linked to increased fullness with meals, which may help you eat less overall. But the same can't be said for fiber supplements. When it comes to greens powders, some greens powders contain no fiber, whereas others contain very little.

Green powders can be quite bitter or have a grassy taste, but there are many ways to make greens powder taste better . Instead of drinking them plain, add them to a smoothie with fruit, which not only adds sweetness but includes fiber and other nutrients. But you don't have to drink them. "Add them into scrambled eggs for omelets, as a seasoning for a soup, into pancake or waffle batter, in baked goods, or mix into your favorite dip," says Akaphong.

Greens powders can be very expensive and, in most cases, are not necessary. However, they can be helpful for days when you don't have time to prepare fresh vegetables or if you are traveling and have limited access to fresh greens. Whether or not they are worth it really depends on your individual nutrient needs, diet, and lifestyle.

Some greens powder brands advertise that they relieve bloating, but the evidence for this is not supported by enough research. Certain brands of greens powders contain digestive enzymes, which may help to alleviate gastrointestinal side effects like bloating in those with certain digestive enzyme deficiencies, although they are unlikely to provide any benefit to those without deficiencies.

Those with diagnosed enzyme deficiencies should consult a healthcare provider and may require prescription medication or a specific separate enzyme supplement. It is important to note that certain digestive enzymes and probiotic blends can make some digestive conditions worse, so they should be taken with caution for those with preexisting GI conditions.

Additionally, some greens powders contain ingredients such as inulin, a fermentable fiber, and alternative sweeteners, which can both cause bloating in some individuals, particularly those with IBS.

The price of greens powders varies depending on the brand and the formula, but they usually range between $20-40. Products that are third-party tested and/or USDA Certified Organic may come with a higher price tag.

Those with added ingredients like adaptogens, probiotics and digestive enzymes can also be more expensive.
