The 7 Best Kayaking Trips in the U.S. for Adventure Seekers

Some of the most beautiful places in the U.S. are best seen from the water.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

kayak tour experiences

There's something extra special about spending a day out on the water , letting it pull you where it wants. And it doesn't matter whether you're paddling around a calm coastal bay in Alaska or flying down a Class III rapid in Georgia — with the cool water below you, warm sun all around you, and an ever-changing landscape that might include red-rock canyon walls, lush overhangs, or even a pod of passing orca whales, the experience is bound to be wonderful.

There are hundreds of amazing kayaking trips across the U.S., but to help you narrow it down, we curated a list that offers a little something for everyone, from newbies looking for perfectly flat waters to advanced kayakers interested in careening down a Class IV rapid. Just make sure to secure the proper permit and practice good stewardship on whatever trip you choose. And don't forget the proper apparel .

Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

When it comes to pure, natural beauty, Alaska is hard to top. And that beauty is only enhanced from the water. While you won't find any rapids or whitewater off the shores of Glacier Bay National Park, you will spot glaciers, puffins, sea lions, and even orca or humpback whales.

If you're interested in booking an overnight trip during the summer (a must), make sure to register for a free permit .

Colorado River, Arizona

The great Colorado River traverses several states — Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and California — and while you could technically float the entire way, you'd need some serious paddling skills and a surefire plan to do so. To get a taste of the Colorado , head to Arizona and run the relatively mild 15-mile section of the river from Glen Canyon to Lees Ferry. And don't forget to look up, so you get the full effect of the red-rock canyon walls and near-constant bluebird skies.

You don't need a permit to float to Lees Ferry, but if you want to continue on, you'll need to secure one.

Klamath River, California

For a beginner-friendly river trip, check out Klamath River . The water may flow out of Oregon with gusto (Class IV water), but it mellows out in California. For a great family experience, put in at Happy Camp and enjoy the views on the 20-mile journey to Dillon Creek. Along the way, you'll come across natural swimming holes, cliff-jumping spots, waterfalls, and some Class II and III rapids. Enjoy great waterfront camping and keep an eye on the skies above — bald eagles roam these parts.

A whitewater rafting permit is not required, but a fire permit is necessary.

Allagash Wilderness Waterway, Maine

If you have your heart set on an East Coast expedition, head to northern Maine. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway flows through an expansive, underdeveloped part of the state and boasts moose, bears, and blueberries along the way. For a full, multiday trip, put in at Churchill Dam and float till you reach Allagash Village, a section that has Class II rapids, lakes, and a short but mandatory portage around the Allagash Falls (well worth the effort).

You'll need to register before you put in and be prepared to pay camping fees.

San Juan Islands, Washington

If sea life is what you seek, head to the San Juan Islands in Washington. Located near the U.S.-Canada border, this string of islands is home to orca whale pods all year round. Plus, it's known for regular sightings of sea lions, seals, dolphins, and otters.

You can book anything from a half-day to multiday kayaking trip around the islands, but we suggest giving yourself plenty of time to explore the smaller islands off Lopez Island, paddle through the protected waters around Orcas Island, and try your luck at spotting a resident orca pod off San Juan Island.

Chattooga River, Georgia

Georgia's Chattooga River has some Class V rapids, but most people plan out a more family-friendly trip that traverses Section 2 and 3 of the river. During Section 2 , you'll float over and around Class I and II rapids, as well as enjoy calmer sections of the deep, crystal-clear water. After seven miles on Section 2, you can take out or continue on to the more difficult (and more remote) Section 3 — home to rapids that reach up to Class IV.

You can self-register for a permit to run the Chattooga River when you put in.

Middle Fork of the Salmon, Idaho

If you're up for more of a challenge, plan a kayaking trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon — a journey found on almost every river lover's bucket list . The river has some serious Class III and IV rapids, but it's also known for its superior fly fishing, so make sure to cast a line when the water calms.

A permit is required to float the Middle Fork of the Salmon and a lottery takes place during the busy summer months.

Comb jellies glow beneath you, fish dart by like blue-green comets, and manatees move slowly through the waters.

“We had an awesome time. I can’t say enough about our tour. Our tour guide, Chili, was great. He was very informative and patient with us. They also accommodated us on a different launching site closer to where we were located. We are very grateful for that. I would definitely use this company again. We are so happy with our experience.”

Cocoa Beach Kayak Tours - Frequently Asked Questions

Cocoa Beach Kayak Tours FAQs

What time of the year has bioluminescence in cocoa beach.

Bioluminescence occurs in Cocoa Beach throughout the year.  Between June and September, you can see bioluminescence created by tiny dinoflagellate plankton.

In the winter months, comb jellies put on a glowing bioluminescent show beneath the waters.

During certain months you can see both dinoflagellate plankton and comb jellies.  The result is truly spectacular.

How Do You Find Bioluminescence In Cocoa Beach?

Although it’s possible to see bioluminescence every night in Cocoa Beach, the best times to go are shortly before, during, or shortly after a new moon.

This way the night is darker and you’ll be able to see the bioluminescence more clearly.

The best places for seeing bioluminescence at Cocoa Beach include the Indian River, the Indian River Lagoon, and the Banana River.

Why Does The Water Glow In Cocoa Beach?

The water at Cocoa Beach glows due to the presence of either dinoflagellate plankton and/or comb jellies.

Both kinds of marine life emit glowing light. The light is caused by an internal chemical reaction that is released as energy.

Dinoflagellates produce a sparkling blue-green light that is often triggered by movement.

This includes the swirl of your paddle, fish dashing through the water, or manatees swimming gracefully beneath the surface.

There are few better ways to enjoy Cocoa Beach than by heading out on the water on a kayak. Paddle quietly through mangrove tunnels, tranquil rivers, and scenic lagoons.

Why Choose Us

Cayman Kayaks, established in 2005, is the original tour operator of Bioluminescent Tours in Grand Cayman. We specialize in providing sustainable Bioluminescent Tours by double kayak and Cayman’s only electric boat. Safety is our utmost concern. Our certified guides and captains will lead you through the night, teach you about this natural phenomenon, and the importance of exploring in an environment-friendly manor.

Our tours depart from Rum Point on Sand Point Drive. Being the closest tour operator to bio bay makes both our kayak and electric boat tour experiences suitable for all ages and abilities. The short and comfortable paddle to the bay’s calm water on a double kayak is suitable for all skill levels or lack thereof.  Climb aboard our brand new double decker electric hybrid boat, NIGHTSHIFT, where guests will sit upstairs for a gentle ride from Rum Point to Bio Bay. Once anchored in the Bioluminescent Bay, guests will come downstairs to a one of a kind observation platform to play in the magical world below.

Cayman Kayaks crew really cares about preserving the bay's existence for future enjoyment. Help us protect and preserve the Bioluminescent Bay in Grand Cayman and explore the enchanting waters on either of our eco-friendly options.

What Our Guests Say

The best thing we did on the Island! We looked into boat tours of the bioluminescent bay, but decided to get a little exercise and do the kayak tour and we were so glad we did. Being right on top of the water and paddling through the bay was incredible. You really get the full experience without having to wear a rented wetsuit and worry about jelly fish. Our children 11 and 13 loved every second of it! Our guide even did some star gazing with us. Cayman Kayaks is the best way to see the bioluminescent bay!! Jill ~ July 2022

"A ride on Nightshift is hands down the premier way to experience a bioluminescence tour"

A ride on Nightshift is hands down the premier way to experience a bioluminescence tour. It comfortably sat a large group of people, has a far smoother ride than I would have expected, and the ingenious layout of the bottom deck for interacting with the water in a controlled and comfortable way makes it easy and enjoyable to experience one of the rare natural phenomenon of the world. The friendly and knowledgeable crew tells stories of local flora and fauna, answer any questions you may have, and treats you to a stargazing experience to wrap the whole thing up. You come away from the experience.

Keith, October 2022

"Stars in the Water" We chose Cayman Kayaks because it was eco-friendly. We were not disappointed. Tom, the owner and our guide, has a special boat (we chose the boat over his kayaks as we have a child with autism) with an electric motor that does not foul the water. Remnants of diesel fuel and other chemicals are harmful to the bioluminescent organisms, as are body lotions and sunscreen. For this reason, Tom does not encourage swimming in the bioluminescence as some of the other tours do. We were very impressed with Tom's knowledge and also his dedication to preserving the fragile ecosystem in Grand Cayman. He also still maintains his wonder and excitement about the bioluminescence, and you feel that he enjoys the experience right along with you. We also enjoyed seeing the "disco shrimp" flashing in the water as we traveled out to the bay. The bioluminescence was remarkable, like a tiny blue galaxy in the water. Another enjoyable facet of the tour was Tom using a laser pointer and telling us about some of the constellations in the night sky--a real treat for those of us who live in cities and don't get to see the full glory of the stars at night. We saw a lot of stars that night, both in the sky and in the water. The wonder of nature was all around us, and it was an experience we won't soon forget.

We had a little adventure tonight and it was AMAZING! ! We highly recommend the Cayman Kayaks Bioluminescence Tour. There are others, but this one is different. They have a custom boat or kayaks for the experience, we chose the boat. Hatches were opened for us to play with the plankton without having to fully get into the water and risk being stung by jellyfish. Then we had buckets of the water to further play with and do some neat stuff. Marty was our guide and was extremely knowledgeable about marine life as well as the night sky. It was truly a special evening and so very worth it!

"My husband and I really enjoyed the nighttime bioluminescent kayak tour and it was worth the drive from West Bay to Rum Point. Our guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and engaging. A Cayman native, it was obvious that his interest in and passion for the island's aquatic ecosystem was from the heart and his enthusiasm was infectious. The bioluminescence was amazing. Just beautiful! It was incredible to paddle through the dark water under a starry moonless sky as plumes of electric blue unfurled around us. I still carry the image of dipping my hand in the water and watching arcs of sparkles trail from my fingertips like diamonds. Again, just a magical experience and a beautiful evening. Cayman Kayaks is a thoroughly professional operation. We were impressed. We'd go again in a heartbeat."

Experience Thrilling Adventures with these 8 La Jolla Kayak Tours

October 3, 2023 By: Maria Haase This article may contain affiliate links. We may earn a small commission if you buy through our links.

Please share our article here:

view of la jolla coast line with kayakers, white text box

Everyone that visits San Diego should do one of the La Jolla Kayak tours at least once. There’s nothing more peaceful than going to spot gorgeous coves and intriguing caves in the calm ocean while the sun is shining.

Undoubtedly, La Jolla is one of the best places in San Diego for a kayaking adventure. There are numerous kayak tour opportunities from hillside towns. These tours allow visitors to hit the Pacific Ocean and see unique forms of nature and wildlife.

Greg and I love kayaking in La Jolla and it is always a fun outing. It is pretty beginner friendly too, so even if you have never been in a kayak before, this is totally doable. The only tricky part is getting through the waves on the shore, but the kayaking tour guides will help you through. You will get wet though, so I recommend leaving your valuables in the provided lockers or bringing a little floating dry bag to keep your things safe. Definitely wear sunscreen and I recommend a hat and, unless you wear only swimwear, some quick-drying clothes (or bring some to change into later).

Here’s our list of the top kayak tours in La Jolla, you must check these out during your visit!

kayaks in the water near sand stone cliffs in La Jolla california - San Diego Valentine's Day

The Best La Jolla Kayak Tours

La jolla sea caves kayak tour.

This hour and a half sea cave kayak tour will take you inside the area’s caves with the help of expert tour guides. Soak up some gorgeous scenery while catching glimpses of marine life, including sea birds, sea lions, seals, even occasionally dolphins or a sea turtle.

Grab the chance to paddle through stunning kelp beds surrounding the La Jolla Ecological Reserve & Underwater Park . Bring your GoPro because you want to ensure you get some snaps of this.

The tour provides all equipment, including a life jacket, kayaks and paddles, and a wet suit if you prefer to wear one.

Morning or afternoon departure times are available, and your guide will meet you at Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla. Before you head out to the water, full training and safety procedures will be provided.

As soon as everyone is good to go, drag your boat to the sea for a great time!

La Jolla Sea Cave Kayak Tour for Two

If you’re looking for more of a private La Jolla kayak cave tour, this hour and a half excursion for two might be up your alley.

Follow your guide, who knows the La Jolla sea caves more than anyone else, as they bring you through many diverse ecological habitats.

See the likes of the wonderful Emerald Cove, the only north-facing cove in the whole state of California. Snap up the chance to get close to sea life, such as harbor seals, otters, and sea lions.

No prior experience is required on this tour. Your group of two will be shown all you need to know before heading out into sea. Use of the company’s gear and equipment is included in the price, e.g., life jackets, kayaks, etc. If you’d like to rent a wetsuit or locker, you can do so for an added fee.

Each participant must arrive at the departure location 30 minutes before to get organized. The staff members will get you ready and outfitted so it doesn’t cut into your kayaking time.

2 Hour Whale Watching Kayak Tour for Two

Now, for something a little different. This two hour sea kayaking La Jolla tour brings you to see grey whales.

Yes, you read that right. Enjoy an intimate experience for two people as you paddle your way off the coast of La Jolla in the hope of seeing grey whales. Learn about the creature’s behavior and how they live their lives while seeing La Jolla from a whole other perspective.

The tour’s meeting point will be 2261 Avenida De La Playa, La Jolla, Ca, 92037. Get there 30 minutes before to get geared up. From there you’ll head down to the beach for your safety briefing and tutorial with a certified guide. Depart from the shores and head 2 miles out to try to spot some whales.

There will be plenty of breaks along the way for you to rehydrate and explanations about the marine life. One great thing about this activity is that the company donates a percentage of every booking to Greenwave & Urban Surf 4 Kids, so your money goes toward a good cause.

Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves

Seeing the seven impressive caves of La Jolla on your own without a guide can be a difficult and dangerous task. Join this two hour La Jolla cove kayaking tour to discover the popular seven caves, including Arch Cave, Clams’ Cave, and Jim’s Cave.

Float through the water seeing places you wouldn’t be able to alone. Admire awe-inspiring sandstone formations while learning how they were created. Get up close to leopard sharks, sea lions, dolphins, and more.

Anyone who hasn’t kayaked before will get full training upon arrival. By the time you get back to shore, you’ll be a professional. All equipment needed is included: helmets, life jackets, and of course, your La Jolla kayak rental.

Leave all valuables behind before heading out to sea. You’re promised to get wet, at least from the waist down, on this tour.

Like most tours on this list, get to the meeting point 30 minutes early. Your guide will meet you at 2158 Avenida De La Playa.

Why just kayak when you can snorkel as well? This two and a half hour La Jolla kayak snorkel tour is set in the Ecological Reserve, and wow, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss out on.

Kayak your way from the La Jolla shores through jaw-dropping caves before heading out to open water for snorkeling. Wave at the leopard sharks as they swim around you — don’t be frightened, they won’t harm you. Other forms of sea life can be seen, too, like rays, shovelnose guitarfish, rockfish, sea lions, and spiny lobster. You’ll feel like one of them for a couple of hours.

The sea cave kayak and snorkeling tour includes essential gear like masks, fins, paddles, etc. If you do happen to have your own snorkeling equipment, you’re allowed to bring it along and use it. Just let the company know before.

An experienced guide will be in a nearby kayak at all times in case there’s trouble with gear or you need anything.

Kayak Rental For Two People From La Jolla Shores

Escape the hustle and bustle of the San Diego lifestyle and spend time with your significant other, best friend, or child on this hour and a half double kayak tour of the La Jolla caves.

Row yourselves around the La Jolla Ecological Reserve at a pace that suits both of you. There’s no guide with you, so you can check out whatever you want.

A safety briefing will be provided before, as well as a list of locations you can and can’t visit. Arrive at the meeting point (Everyday California’s Office) 30 minutes early, your kayak and paddles will be waiting.

Depending on the time of year, kayakers may see different species of fish, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and whales. Don’t panic if you do! They’re enjoying the water as much as you are and won’t harm you.

Anyone who takes part in this La Jolla shores kayaking excursion must be a competent swimmer in case the kayak topples over when you’re out at sea alone. Unfortunately, you cannot bring the kayak inside any of the 7 caves. If you want to look inside, consider one of the other tours on this list instead.

90 Minute Kayak Rental In La Jolla

Take part in a 90 minute guided kayak tour of La Jolla. Grasp the basics of Kayaking, from steering to paddling, and see a whole new side to La Jolla you never even knew existed. Follow your guide past the breathtaking caves, charming kelp forests, and underwater canyons while listening to interesting stories and facts.

With some luck, you might see different types of dolphins that are known to congregate around certain areas. These include bottlenose dolphins, white-sided dolphins, and common dolphins.

On average, each tour covers about six miles round trip. So, you’ll be kayaking for the majority of the time. Experience isn’t necessary. If you need help, your guide will be by your side every second. When you return to shore, a scorching hot beverage will be waiting for you to warm you up.

Every participant should bring shoes which can get wet, a bathing suit or swimming shorts, sunscreen, and a strap to hold their sunglasses in case they fall into the sea. You can leave a change of clothes and valuables behind in one of the lockers provided.

There’s a minimum booking requirement of two people. The maximum number of people that can go on this tour is nine, so reserve your spot to avoid disappointment.

kayak tour experiences

La Jolla kayak tours are a great way to see areas you wouldn’t be able to on a larger boat. Once you have a guide by your side, it opens up many opportunities. Plus, you know you will be completely safe wherever you go.

Which La Jolla kayak tour will you sign up for?!

Camping-Based Sea Kayak Tours

Many of the places we visit lend themselves perfectly to camping.  For those that enjoy being fully immersed in our natural world, a camping sea kayak trip is hard to beat.  By camping we’re able to get into the wild, be more in harmony with the local flora and fauna and experience life in a truly regenerative way.

There’s a level of bonding and camaraderie that happens on camping trips that doesn’t happen in any other travel format.  Sharing the wonders of nature together builds memories that last a lifetime.  There are soaring eagles, gliding dolphins, hot sun or a sudden rainstorm, gazing at a star-studded sky and so much more!

We have several camping sea kayak tours and welcome you to contact us to discover your next dream vacation!

  • michelle0brien 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles A good experience but not much care given to slower members of the group. The experience of kayaking through the Everglades was wonderful and we thoroughly enjoyed travelling through the mangrove tunnels etc. However, as my daughter was with us we were usually at the back of the group and the guide was not good at waiting for us to catch up before moving off, meaning that we missed out on information that was given in short talks and I had to stop her and ask her to repeat it for my family. As a guide you need to manage your party for the speed of the slowest person not the fastest and I did not feel this was taken into account. Our guide was also unable to answer a number of questions we had about the local wildlife which was a bit of a shame. Read more Written April 23, 2023

  • MatterMatters 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fell in LOVE with FLORIDA again. All it took was three days kayaking and two days camping. Everglades Adventures offers a three day/two night kayaking and camping experience and I was able to take it with them. This is not a trip for beginners. I have experience with kayaking and camping but a learned a lot during this experience. It was an amazing experience. Let me try to put some of the reason why... 1. The Guide - The guide was AWESOME. Wilson was very knowledge about Everglades, the National Park System and traveling. He is a outdoorsman that I admire; he was able to navigate through the 10,000 island, displayed his love for nature and was able to express what he needed the group to do to get to the next point. He was thoughtful about our needs as customers and able to problem solve on the spot (he made two meals on a campfire). I felt safe with him in the wild west of the glades and would love to have him as a guide again. True pleasure and made the trip. 2. The food - its not five start dinning but we are camping. The food was fresh and yummy. We had Maui for dinner, plenty of vegetables, fruit and snacks. Everything was well organized. 3. Camping gear - I was nervous to have to burrow a tent but my nervous were all for nothing. The tent, sleeping bad, the kayak, the paddles, water containers, everything was in good shape and user friendly. 4. The experience - the kayaking route was very thoughtful and we got to see the beauty of the glades. I loved that there were two different routes taken to take us to base camp and to take us home. Also, the camping site was amazing, you could see the beauty of the islands and the endless scope of the Gulf of Mexico sitting in the same place at the camping site. On my way home, I was trying to plan how to take this trip again. There are not a lot of times in life you get to be in natures quiet beauty. This is not my first and will not be my last trip with Everglades Adventure. This trip will be a highlight in a long list of Florida kayaking and camping trips. Read more Written January 27, 2022
  • Greg M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Super Helpful Rental Assistance We rented kayaks here for a self-guided kayak trip in Everglades National Park/Big Cypress. Originally, we rented a tandem sit-in kayak for a 3 day trip around Tiger Key, but weather forced us to change to a 2-day trip down the Turner River to Crooked River to Chokoloskee using two sit-in single kayaks. Dillon and the team were great about making these changes at the last minute, and they were punctual about meeting us for kayak delivery for the put-in, and picking us up on the back end. My research showed that Everglades Adventure Kayak was the only rental service offering sit-in kayaks near Everglades City, which to me are a necessity for overnight trips. Dillon and the others at Everglades Adventure Kayaks were very knowledgeable about the area, and helped us with trip planning when the weather changed our plans (the park rangers at Gulf Coast Visitor Center were also very helpful). Some day, we plan to return to do our original trip and will be renting here again. Read more Written January 17, 2022

  • Shari L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beautul, informative kayak tour We did a three hour guided Kayak on the Turner River, leaving from Everglades City. There were five kayakers, and our Guide, Dave. The day was beautiful, warm and sunny and we saw several alligators and birds along the way. Dave's was very informative and usually kept to the back of the group, allowing each of us to take the lead, stopping in wider spots to explain what we were seeing and where we were headed next and what to expect. As he warned, the section through the mangrove tunnel was tight and quite shallow, but so beautiful. This tour was the highlight of our two day trip to the Everglades. Read more Written March 6, 2021

  • janntn 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Sights That Few Experience The kayak tour through the mangroves was a wonderful outing, and having a guide added so much information and assurance. It was definitely an opportunity to explore places we wouldn't have gone on our own--tunnels were so narrow at places that we had to take the paddles apart and only use half. Shy only a "very good" rating? We were lucky that the group was small; with a larger group, it would have been difficult to get close enough to hear the guide. I was also surprised that there wasn't a more extensive review of the basics of kayaking and safety before we began, but we had no problems on the tour. Read more Written March 25, 2020

  • The San Juan Islands are home to an incredible variety of wildlife. You will likely see dear, minke whales, humpback whales, harbor porpoises, harbor seals, stellar sea lions, and river otters during your trip. And if you’re a bird lover, you’re in luck – the San Juans have the second largest breeding population of bald eagles in the lower 48 states! Other birds you might see include loons, belted kingfishers, harlequin ducks, and more. Every so often we might even spot orcas, gray whales, elephant seals, or California sea lions!
  • We strive to create an unforgettable kayak experience. While seeing orcas would be amazing, we understand that they are endangered animals with their own territory and food supply to worry about. We will keep our eyes peeled for them, but we won’t give them a hard time if they don’t show up on cue.
  • Our partners at San Juan Island Outfitters have you covered with premium tents (singles or doubles) that are easy to pitch and break down.
  • There are eco-friendly composting toilets at the campsite and locations we take breaks at during our paddling adventures.
  • There won’t be any showers at the campsite, so pack some refreshing body wipes if you’d like! If you’re really craving a hot shower after the trip, consider booking a post-trip stay in Friday Harbor, WA for some well-deserved R&R.
  • The campsites are managed by the Washington State Parks Department. All the sites have picnic tables, fire pits, potable water, and eco-friendly composting toilets.
  • Conditions and state-mandated burn bans may necessitate shutting off the well pump and precluding bonfires. While out of our control, we do our best to manage and mitigate for adverse conditions (e.g. bringing in our own potable water).
  • Alas, you’ll need to bring your own charging packs and cables for juicing up your electronic devices.
  • Cell service is usually available at camp and intermittently available while on the water.
  • To fully enjoy the experience, we recommend a certain level of physical fitness and stamina. You’ll paddle up to 5 hours a day, with meal breaks in between.
  • Prior to your tour, conditioning muscle groups of the upper body with light exercises such as calisthenics, rowing, or swimming for at least two weeks can help.

20 Epic Experiences for Your Adventure Bucket List

S ometimes my husband plans our family travel adventures, and I just have to try really hard not to think about them before they happen—adventure bucket list moments like paragliding, cliff jumping, swimming with black tip sharks, or kayaking in the ocean.

HELLO! Whales and sharks people!!!

There are even times when I am moderately okay with the activity and then all of a sudden a huge curveball comes at me. That was the case when we ziplined through the jungles of Chiang Mai, Thailand. I hadn't planned on rapelling to the jungle floor!

20 Experiences for Your Adventure Bucket List

Zipline tours for around the world adventure, 1. zipline tour in the jungle of chiang mai, thailand.

Our guide began this tour by asking if we knew what the forked-shaped bamboo sticks were that hang from our gear. We shook our heads and with a very serious face he says they are for killing snakes in the jungle.

Say what!

"Just kidding," he smirked, "they are meant to be used as a break on the zipline. As you near the platform after a long run, you hold the bamboo stick against the line and it will slow you down." Whew.

We had about ten runs on the ziplines, some crazy rope bridges to cross, a 40-foot vertical drop by rope, and then a 120-foot drop!

Christopher!!! ( That's what I call him sometimes when I am freaked out. It comes out kind of like a swear word maybe. )

When we first got to the 40-foot drop, I calmed myself by thinking positive thoughts, “Ok, I can do this,” as the employees attached my harness to ropes and let me drop. I remembered to bend my knees as I landed. Then we came to the 120-foot drop. Seriously? This was NOT in the brochure! Pretty sure I just closed my eyes and plunged.

2. Zipline Tour in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

On a recent excursion to Costa Rica , Chris and I had the opportunity to have a zipline adventure outdoor at Diamanté Adventure Park.

When it was our turn, we got suited up and began the first of five runs.

The Superman run was especially exciting. As I was waiting my turn though, a bee must have landed on my leg and crawled under my pant leg. Not sure how I didn’t feel it sooner, but I didn’t realize it was there until it stung me. Yeouch. I pulled a huge stinger out of my leg.

Hmmm, the bee sting was the worst part of this world adventure!

3. elephants in chiang mai, thailand.

Chris researched a lot to find this particular elephant training center in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It offered a cruelty-free opportunity to interact with the elephants in a more natural habitat.

Our guide taught us a few commands. I thought I memorized them pretty well, but once I was on the elephant I quickly forgot everything but "me long" . It meant sit down, and I was pretty sure I didn't want the elephant to sit down so soon.

We rode up the hill for about a half an hour. My spunky elephant, Kumoon, was rather hungry and kept going off the path to find more food or grab at a tree limb and snap it off.

At the end of our tour, the elephants were guided to an arena where we dismounted for the final time. I was pretty happy to say, " me long " at this point.

4. Snorkeling with Black Tip Sharks in Tahiti

Chris and I loved this half day tour with Captain Leo that included:

  • Round trip transfer from your Moorea hotel
  • Snorkeling gear
  • Fruit, tropical juice and cocktails

Our group stopped first at an area that is popular for snorkeling with black tip sharks and stingrays. Surprisingly (and thankfully) the sharks didn’t bother us at all. From there, we snorkeled at a coral garden between two small islands off of Moorea to discover all kinds of colorful, tropical fish.

Adventure Outdoor with White Water Rafting

5. white water rafting on the rangitikei river, new zealand.

Interested in Class V river rafting ? Chris discovered River Valley Adventure Lodge in New Zealand as he planned for our trip.

For our wet suit attire, I was outfitted in a long-sleeved shirt, a fleece long sleeve, a wet suit, booties, a helmet, and then another jacket before a thirty-minute bus ride to the drop off point.

Our guides gave instructions before we climbed into our rafts and started down the river.

Throughout our tour, we rode through Class III to Class V rapids for 2.5 hours. Except for getting dumped in the river a few times, the ride was pretty epic.

6. White Water Rafting in Buena Vista, Colorado

If you are looking an exciting adventure outdoor, you can’t go wrong with white water rafting on the Arkansas River in Buena Vista, Colorado .

Whether you are looking for a gentle beginner float through Class I & II white water or a more advanced Class IV technical experience, you can find some of the best white water rafting adventure outdoor in the US along the Arkansas River.

Chris booked our "advanced" white water rafting adventure on the Numbers—a Class IV section along the Arkansas. When we arrived, we found that we were the only two that had signed up for this trip. Score!

We enjoyed a private adventure outdoor with our guide, Rye.

Jeep and Boat Tours for the Adventure Seeker

7. jeep ride in sedona, arizona.

Chris and I surprised the girls with a jeep tour while visiting Sedona, Arizona . They thought it was a very welcome break from all the hikes we were "making" them do.

Our driver helped us get settled in the open-air 4x4 for a one-of-a-kind jeep adventure. Our youngest was six at the time and loved the experience.

We all loved the jostling of the jeep interspersed with the history and lore of the area. We bounced around so much that my children dubbed me the "bobblehead".

8. Jet Boat Tour of the Rogue River, Oregon

Even with our jet boat tour beginning at 11:30 am, the weather along the ocean at Gold Beach was still pretty chilly. As we skimmed upstream on the boat the weather warmed up dramatically. You may need jackets and blankets to start, but will want to peel off your layers for later in the day. Be sure to wear sunscreen.

The jet boat zoomed up the Rogue River with our tour guide/driver. He shared info about the wildlife, the history, and the bridges along the river.

We stopped at Agnes on the north side of the river for our first pit stop then made a second stop for “lunch” at 4:00 pm on the south side of the river.

9. Jungle Jeep Tour in Papeete, Tahiti

Travel to the heart of Tahiti Nui into the crater of the island’s inactive volcano on a 4×4 jungle safari. Guides share local lore and legends, discoveries of native trees and flowers, waterfalls, and a swimming hole where you’ll stop for lunch and a dip in the water.

This tour features off-roading on trails that are sketchy at times. Our guide classified the tour as “bumpy” and “more bumpy” ! Chris and I had the bruises to prove it.

As you leave the busyness of the city, stand up, hang on to the bars in the back of the truck, and enjoy the ride.

10. Boat Tour of the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Our skipper, Flavio, did his best to navigate the choppy waters of the peninsula so that we were experiencing the least amount of rocking. One of his coworkers purposely drove close to our boat creating a lot more choppiness with his wake.

Flavio scoffed, “ He isa stupida skipper .”

As we reached the end of the peninsula and headed to the Amalfi Coast, Flavio pulled the boat into a quiet cove and announced it was time to swim. He brought out pool noodles, snorkels, and snacks. He also offered a variety of drinks and snacks throughout the day.

Our next stop was Amalfi for about 60 minutes. It wasn’t a lot of time and we needed to get some lunch. We found a small takeaway place called Fior di Pizza for a delicious Margherita pizza.

From Amalfi we headed to Positano where we had a little more time to either shop and explore or enjoy the beach. Kristen swam at the beach while Chris kept an eye on her. Misha and I explored Positano and discovered lots of instagrammable places .

Hiking Excursions for Your Adventure Bucket List

11. hiking into the mt. pinatubo volcano, philippines.

We arrived at the starting point for our trek to Mt. Pinatubo (an inactive volcano). After signing waivers, we were ready to go by 6:30 am as we packed into a 4x4 jeep with our driver and guide and were off.

Early morning was a perfect time to set off as it was not yet too hot. We forded streams, passed caribou, and bounced around for a short while until a breakfast stop.

We continued on our way and spent the next couple of hours hanging on jostling around in the jeep. For the final portion of the trek, we set off on a 30-minute hike along a lush mountain path toward the crater of the volcano with our guide, Audi.

We arrived at the crater and climbed stones steps that opened up the vista of the volcano. A large lake glistened before us surrounded by the volcano.

Later in the afternoon, we started our hike back up the stone steps for our return.

12. Hike to Sky Pond, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Chris picked a doozy of a hike for us. It was just under 10 miles round trip with almost 2,000 feet of elevation gain.

Start from the Glacier Gulch Trailhead along the Bear Lake Corridor of RMNP , hike past Alberta Falls, and then take the path at the junction to The Loch .

Traverse around The Loch toward the Lake of Glass, Timberline Falls, and then Sky Pond.

Let's just say, this is NOT a hike I will want to do ever again. After hiking beyond the Loch, the trail evolved into a lot of steps.

I had no idea that I would have to scramble up the side of the waterfall, search for handholds and pray that I wouldn't slip.

If you want to experience this adventure outdoor: RMNP from Denver or Boulder

13. Hike to Vernal and Nevada Falls in Yosemite National Park, California

Are you planning to  hike the Mist Trail in Yosemite National Park ? It takes you first to  Vernal Fall  and then on to  Nevada Fall .

Pace yourself on the Mist Trail. This outdoor adventure to two waterfalls at Yosemite has an eventual elevation gain of 2000 feet!

The first part of the path is a paved incline with very few flat sections until you near Vernal Fall. It is a moderately difficult climb of 1.5 miles (3 miles round trip) with 1000 feet of elevation gain.

The pathway becomes misty with spray from the waterfall as you get close.

The path to Nevada Fall continues on from Vernal Fall. You’ve still got another 1000 feet of elevation to climb! Getting to Nevada Fall and back again to the valley floor is 5.4 miles.

14. Hike from Monterosso al Mare to Vernazza in Cinque Terre, Italy

If you plan to hike during your visit to Cinque Terre , I recommend planning for an early start, especially in the summer months. You’ll find fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and less humidity.

The narrow path is not easy with steps going up from the very start. There are many fitness levels, ages and agility levels of tourists who hike this trail. The hike is 2.2 miles with an elevation gain of 705 feet.

Take time to enjoy the journey. Stop every so often to take a few pictures and selfies. The views are amazing and as you get closer to Vernazza, you see the brightly colored iconic village. The hike takes about a1.5-2 hours for the average hiker.

15. Hike to Hanging Lake in Glenwood Springs, Colorado

This is one of the can’t miss adventures and hikes near Glenwood Springs . You will need to plan ahead with a reservation.

Be prepared to climb steps and boulders up and up and up through the canyon for 3.1 miles (round trip) and 1,200 feet of elevation gain. There are only a few flat sections along the way—and seven or eight bridges to cross.

Once you get close to the lake, a railing had been installed to help hikers up the last bit of the trail. And you will need it.

I recommend hiking first to the source of Hanging Lake—Sprouting Rock Falls. As you can imagine from the name, the waterfall springs right out of the side of the mountain. You can walk behind the falls and explore the area and take pictures.

After taking some pictures, climb a short way back down to Hanging Lake which is skirted by Bridal Veil Falls.

Water Adventure Activities

16. cliff jumping at blue hole, jamaica.

Each group coming to the Blue Hole has a guide, so after paying our entrance fee, our guide directed us down to the water. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but I thought maybe a nice swimming hole.

It was a series of jumps into cascading pools of water.

Now, let's just say, I am not a fan of swimming and surely not jumping from heights. But I did it. In fact, the thought went through my head, "I rode an elephant. I can do this."

If you are brave enough, you can also walk down the side of a waterfall while holding onto a rope.

The last jump of the day was from a cliff 15-feet above the water. Kristen, my youngest, was brave and tried it twice. Some of us declined.

17. Kayaking in the Ocean at La Jolla, California

You have the option of renting a one, two, or three-seat kayak.

We had two hours on the ocean (I think one hour would be adequate).

We saw a seal that kept popping above the water. Cool!

We went in a little early because Misha wanted to ride the surf in the kayak a couple of times. I don't believe she counted on being dumped in the ocean on their ride in.

Because Misha wanted to ride the surf back in again, Chris dropped Kristen off (sh was five at the time) on the beach and went back out again with Misha. It was a decision he would come to rue. In fact, I happened to snap a photo the exact moment he and Misha resurfaced from being dumped over a second time with Chris frantically reaching for his hat, the locker key from the kayak shop, AND his prescription sunglasses. He managed to only salvage the hat.

We looked for twenty minutes without any success. The loss of the key cost us another $15; the glasses were gone.

18. Whale Watching Tour in Anacortes, WA

Chris and I planned a whale watching excursion from Anacortes, Washington! One of the many fall activities for your adventure bucket list.

Due to the calm winds and waters of the San Juan islands, this area is an ideal place to view orcas, humpback whales, minke whales, and gray whales as well as a myriad of other wildlife.

Did you know that all of the whales are documented and named and can be identified by their features and fin? “Split Fin”, a humpback whale, likes to swim close to the island and puts on a good show once spotted.

Mountain Adventure Activities

19. mountain biking.

Chris has loved mountain biking from the first time he tried it. Me? I won't try it. There's something about careening down the face of a mountain face first that just isn't my thing.

Some of the fun places Chris loves to ride in the summer include:

  • Keystone, Winter Park, Vail, and Breckenridge Ski Resorts
  • Arches National Park
  • Poison Spider Trail in Moab
  • Palisade Plunge atop Grand Mesa in Colorado

in Colorado where you can buy a pass to ride the ski lift up the mountain and then experience body-jarring, life threatening turns and twists all the way down the mountain.

These trails are not for the faint of heart, but if you love body-jarring, life threatening turns and twists all the way down the mountain, give it a try. Doesn't sound fun to me, but Chris loves it.

20. Paragliding from Mt. Pilatus, Switzerland

A couple of months before our trip to Switzerland, I told Chris that I would consider   paragliding with him from Mount Pilatus . He  promptly  did some research, found a reputable company, and made reservations for the both of us. I did not allow myself to think it.

As time came for our scheduled tandem paragliding session, we met up with Marcel in the lobby of the Hotel Bellevue on Mt. Pilatus, close to the reception desk, and followed him outside to the paragliding staging area. Marcel and Werner would be our tandem paragliding guides today to give us a bird’s eye view of the Swiss Alps.

Chris soared off the mountain first and then it was my turn. Though nervous, I did it and it was epic.

You might say that paragliding is the proper way to see Switzerland!

World Adventure Bucket List Gear

I highly recommend being an adventure seeker and seeking world adventure along your travels. I also highly recommend being prepared for all of the adventure activities on your bucket list with the Ten Essentials for your best day hikes and excursions :

Pack a backpack

My favorite backpack to take when I adventure outdoor, travel to Europe, and hike in the Rocky Mountains is the North Face Recon backpack for women.

Chris’  North Face Recon backpack , designed for his manly man body , has a padded laptop section. It is perfect for an adventure seeker day hike pack which we fill with our lunch, snacks, the Camelbak bladder, and extra water bottles.

Bring plenty of water

Be sure to bring plenty of water. Pack your Camelbak reservoir into your backpack. We also fill our vacuum-sealed water bottles with water, and even add in a few extra bottles for the hikes on our adventure bucket list.

We add  electrolytes ,  Zipfizz , or  Crystal Lite  single serve packs to the water bottles for a little extra energy or flavor boost.

Pack snacks

We love the Built protein bars, protein puffs, and granola bars for our world adventure pursuits.

Use code SJTRAVELS for 10% off your built.com purchase

Don't forget your sunglasses

My optometrist brothers recommend wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes—I like my  Ray Bans . Invest in a sunglass strap for more adventurous outdoor activities.

Wear sunscreen

Over the years, I have encouraged my family to wear sunscreen everyday, but especially when they are in the sun for extended periods of time on our hikes. I even buy them their own tube of the more expensive  PCA Skin Active Broad Spectrum SPF 45 sunscreen . You only have one chance to take care of your skin.

Download maps

Be sure to download the map of your chosen hike or outdoor adventure to your phone while you have cell service so you can stay on track. If you are hiking in the mountains you may not always have a cell signal.

Bring a portable charger

Make sure that you bring a  FULLY CHARGED phone and  portable charger  to ensure that your phone has enough power to get you back to your vehicle. It just so happens that the  INIU portable charger  is one of our  genius gear and gadgets for travel .

Wear appropriate clothing, footwear, and hats

You will want to consider appropriate footwear and sun-protective clothing for your adventure activities and travels.

As a  melasma  sufferer, most of my adventure travel and hiking pictures are accented with a hat or  visor . Whatever you choose, buy something cute (or masculine) and be proactive about protecting your skin on your adventure activities.

Don't forget your phone

Most of us don't leave home without our phones, but just in case YOU have a tendency to forget it and need a reminder, this is for YOU!

Bring a camera

Check out the convenience of the Canon Powershot G1X . It is lightweight, has a zoom lens, and is a perfect digital camera for taking pictures on the go.

Of course, there are great options for a beginners DSLR, mid-range DSLR, underwater cameras and great lenses.

7. Swim and Chill at Benagil

kayak tour experiences

  • 4.5 hours in duration
  • The chance to swim into Benagil cave!!
  • Life jackets
  • The chance to rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard
  • Beach games
  • Alcoholic beverages

This may seem strange to include a tour where kayaking isn’t the main focus, but you may be pleasantly surprised with what you find! This incredible 4.5-hour tour to the Benagil Caves is definitely for the adventure-seekers in your group.

Why? Well, for starters you’ll be hopping in a van where you’ll enjoy air conditioning as well as some refreshing beer or sangria for the journey. When you arrive at the spot where you jump in, you’ll receive a quick safety briefing followed by your life jackets, floating boards, and inflatables for the 1-hour swim out to the caves!

When you arrive, you’ll also have the chance to float around the caves, enjoy a nice lunch, listen to music, or even just relax on the beach if you wish! This is definitely one of the more unique tours out of Lagos, and you have the opportunity to rent a kayak for the tour if you wish to do some more exploring while everyone else is relaxing on the beach.

Most tours don’t take you inside the caves to swim, so if you’re hoping for a unique tour in Lagos, then this is it! Also, I know this is getting a bit redundant at this point, but this is another award-winning tour that has excellent reviews.

What Should I Bring on a Lagos Kayak Tour?

kayak tour experiences

As most kayaking tours provide all the necessary equipment and gear, you won’t need to bring much with you. However, here are some recommended items to bring along on your Lagos kayak tour:

  • Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, the sun’s UV rays can be pretty strong out on the water (the refraction off the water can cause some serious burns), so be sure to bring water-resistant sunscreen with a high SPF.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the glare with a good pair of polarized sunglasses.
  • Hat: A hat will provide some additional protection from the sun and make it easier to see.
  • Waterproof camera/phone case: If you want to take pictures during your kayak tour, make sure to protect your phone or camera with a waterproof case.
  • Comfortable clothes: Wear a bathing suit or quick-drying clothes that you don’t mind getting wet.
  • Water shoes: Chances are that you’ll be stepping on rocks at one point or another during your tour, and water shoes will provide a bit more traction and keep your feet feeling good if you happen to step on a sharp one!
  • Towel: Water naturally drips down the paddle and directly into your lap, so if you don’t have a skirt on then you’re going to get a bit wet.
  • Water bottle: Paddling can be a workout! Make sure to stay hydrated.
  • Snacks: Some tours may not provide food, so bring some light snacks if you tend to get peckish.
  • Change of clothes: If your accommodation is a far distance from your tour’s meeting point, then you’ll be glad to have a dry set of clothes to change into instead of waiting until you return to your hotel.
  • Plastic bag for wet clothes: You’ll need somewhere to put your wet clothes and towel after the tour.

Tourists get more access to royal family residences with 'exclusive tours' of Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle

A picture of Balmoral Castle exterior with some colourful gardens

Rooms at Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace that were previously off limits will be opened to the public for the first time, giving visitors a sneak peek into royal life.

The royal residences were open to tourists before, but now visitors will be able to see even more of the historical locations and take "exclusive tours" with special guides.

However, it comes at a price.

Tickets for what's called "The Balmoral Experience" cost 100 pounds ($192).

Significant royal residences

Scotland's Balmoral Castle was thought to be Queen Elizabeth II's favourite residence, with the late monarch spending her final days there before her death in 2022.

It was something of a retreat for the late monarch, who spent almost every summer of her life at the estate.

"I suppose Balmoral is a place one looks forward to very much," she said in 1992.

"I think granny is the most happy here. I think she really, really loves the Highlands," her granddaughter, Princess Eugenie said in 2012.

Buckingham Palace is in central London and is an administrative hub for the royal family.

Its balcony is a centrepiece for mayor royal events, with the royals typically gathering there to wave to crowds below.

Balmoral interior opened for the first time

Before now, access to Balmoral Castle was pretty much restricted to the grounds and the ballroom.

But a series of limited tours will give visitors a more intimate look at Queen Elizabeth's summer home later this year.

Here's how the Balmoral website describes it :

"For the first time since the castle was completed in 1855, we have been granted permission to take you on a private tour with our experienced guides. "They will take you on a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle. "You will learn about the origins of the Castle and how it has been loved by generations of the Royal family. Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today by their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the royal family."

The tours are limited to 40 people per day and will only run in July and August.

Tickets cost 100 pounds, with an extra 50 pounds for afternoon tea.

Balmoral tickets sell out in a day

Within a day after local media reported the new tour, all tickets have sold out , according to the Balmoral Castle website.

On Wednesday, the website was briefly brought down by demand.

"As we are currently experiencing a high demand of bookings, you have been placed in a queue," the website read.

General admission tickets, which covers entry to the grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are still available.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and their four children pose for a holiday snap in 1972.

More access to Buckingham Palace

Before this announcement, the public could tour 19 state rooms at Buckingham Palace.

But the East Wing — a section of Buckingham Palace which includes the front facade and the famous balcony — has been off limits.

In July and August, "expert guides" will lead small tourist groups through the wing.

It will lead people to a room that leads onto the balcony, according to Royal Collections Trust website .

But it doesn't say if tourists will be able to go out on the balcony.

Adults will have to be pay an extra 75 pounds on top of the standard admission ticket to the state rooms — so it will cost at least 107 pounds.

There are limited tickets available for these tours, which haven't gone on sale yet.

Charging elephant kills an American woman on 'bucket list trip' in Zambia

An American woman who was on what she had called her "last big trip" was killed when a charging elephant flipped over the car she was traveling in at a national park in Zambia .

The “aggressive” creature buffeted the vehicle carrying six tourists and a guide, tour operator Wilderness said in a statement Tuesday. It said the 79-year-old victim died after Saturday's incident on a game drive at the Kafue National Park in western Zambia.

The company did not name the victim but Rona Wells, her daughter, identified her as Gail Mattson in a post on Facebook. She said her mother died in a “tragic accident while on her dream adventure.”

A video circulating on social media apparently showing the incident shows a large elephant running toward a car, which slows down as the animal approaches its left side. The elephant then flips the vehicle over and the passengers can be heard gasping as the car rolls over.

NBC News does not know the condition or identity of the person who filmed the video.

Photos shared online of the car, which is emblazoned with the logo of the tour operator, show it tipped onto its side after the incident, with a deep dent in two of its side doors.

Wilderness, which describes itself as a “leading conservation and hospitality company” operating in eight African countries, including Zambia, did not respond to NBC News when asked to confirm the authenticity of the video and the photos.

But the tour operator’s CEO, Keith Vincent, said in the statement that the company’s “guides are all extremely well trained and experienced.”

"Sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he added.

Gail Mattson, during a safari in Zambia

Another woman was also injured in the incident and taken to a medical facility in South Africa, the Wilderness statement said, adding that four others were treated for minor injuries.

“It’s extremely rare to see an elephant that irate,” Marlon du Toit, a wildlife photographer and safari guide, told the “TODAY” show Thursday. “Across Africa, there are thousands and thousands of guests on safari on a daily basis with no negative consequences.”

The exact cause of Mattson’s death was unclear, but the company said her body would be repatriated to her family in the United States with the support of local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Lusaka.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died,” the statement added.

NBC News has reached out to Mattson's family for further comment.

Kafue National Park is Zambia’s largest and oldest national park, according to its website, and spans an area of more than 8,000 square miles. Vast regions of the park remain unexplored and the website says it is home to a variety of untamed wildlife.

A 'bucket list trip'

Mattson spent her winters in Sun City West, Arizona, playing bridge and cards, but during the rest of the year, she "travels all over the world," her friend Brenda Biggs told NBC News. Biggs and her husband, John Longabauth, became friends with Mattson when they moved to the area 6 ½ years ago.

Longabauth said Mattson spoke to the couple about her upcoming safari trip about two weeks ago, and called it "one of her bucket list trips." He said she was very excited for the adventure.

Before she left, she gave the couple concert tickets for a show that would happen while she was traveling, telling them to enjoy the concert and "I'll see you when I get back," Longabauth recalled of the conversation.

Biggs said Mattson, who was almost 80 years old, told her that the African safari was her "my last big trip." She said Mattson was "super excited because it was like the culmination of all the trips that she had gone on."

An avid traveler, Mattson took to trips to Europe and Asia, Longabauth recalled, noting that she might have been to South America, too.

Biggs called her friend "flamboyant," "friendly" and "fabulous" and said she loved bright colors. Mattson had taken over Biggs’ job as the event planner for their 200-member bridge club, she said.

"Gail was one of the more up people you'd ever want to meet," Longabauth said. "She was always up. She was always optimistic. She was always seeing the good side of everybody."

Included as a 2024 Major Course, Valhalla Golf Course is located in Louisville, Kentucky, a modern, parkland-style course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Characterized by its wide fairways, large, undulating greens, and challenging water hazards, it has been the venue for multiple major championships, including the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. Since it hosts the 2024 PGA Championship, Career mode has been updated to have the PGA Championship rotate every season between Valhalla, Oak Hill, and Southern Hills.

Pinehurst No. 2, the second 2024 Major Course to debut, is located in North Carolina and is a world-renowned golf course known for its crowned, undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers. Designed by the legendary Donald Ross, it has hosted more single golf championships, including the U.S. Open Championship and PGA Championship, than any other course in America. It will host the 2024 U.S. Open Championship, so Career mode has been updated to rotate the U.S. Open every season between Pinehurst No. 2, The Los Angeles Country Club, and The Country Club.

The third 2024 Major Course, renowned for its "Postage Stamp" eighth hole, is Royal Troon. Known as a world-class course, with traditional links located on the rugged coast of Scotland. Offering golfers challenging wind conditions, deep bunkers, large putting greens, and undulating fairways, Royal Troon is a frequent stop in the Open Championship rota, including this year. The Open will now rotate in Career mode between Royal Troon, Royal Liverpool, and St Andrews.

Further celebrating the tradition of Masters week, the Augusta National Par 3 Course will also be added to the game. The course is stunningly beautiful and serves as the traditional venue for the Par 3 Contest held annually on the eve of the Masters Tournament.

All four of these incredible courses are now available to play in Quick Play and Private Match and will be featured in Online and Tournament playlist rotations as well. As previous Ryder Cup hosts, Pinehurst No. 2 and Valhalla have also been added to Ryder Cup formats in Quick Play, Online, and Private Match.

Jack Nicklaus, often referred to as “the Golden Bear," is renowned for his powerful drives, precision iron play, and exceptional putting ability, which contributed to his record 18 major championship wins. Nicklaus's six Masters titles add to his legendary status as the greatest Major Champion golfer of all time. When playing as Jack Nicklaus, you’ll notice that he has his own set of golf clubs, four outfits to choose from, and his unique swing animation. Jack Nicklaus is available to play in any format that supports playing with pro golfers.

Season 11 Pro Pass** includes a wide variety of cosmetics in the premium tier including a selection of spring-themed apparel, Jack Nicklaus’ clubs, and one of his outfits. Completing Season 11 Pro Pass will earn you Jack Nicklaus’ '65 Masters Ball Spec in the free tier and the J.LINDEBERG “KV Tour - Azalea” outfit in the premium tier. Throughout the season you’ll earn tokens to level up your Pro Pass by completing live Quests and playing rounds in Online, Tournaments, and Career modes.

Challenges mode has been updated with two new challenge series. The “Drive Chip and Putt” challenges series offers a taste of what it feels like to compete in the famous junior golf competition. The “Jack Nicklaus” challenge series showcases the history of the Golden Bear, featuring some of the best rounds from his Major Championship victories, and a variety of other memorable moments from his legendary career.
