klaipeda tourist attractions

Are you planning a trip to Lithuania’s coast and are interested in finding all of the best things to do in Klaipeda?

Klaipeda, Lithuania’s third-largest city, is often overlooked by tourists who may only drift in for a short visit before making a beeline for the sea and sand dunes of the Curonian Spit. Unlike many port cities, however, Klaipeda has none of the industrial facilities or dodgy vibes commonly associated with cities such as this.

On the contrary, the riverside promenade, laid-back vibe, and charming architecture and cobbled streets of the old town make this Lithuanian city a fantastic destination to visit in its own right.

There are numerous fun and interesting things to do in Klaipeda and it is a city that certainly deserves to be explored.

Table of Contents

How to get to Klaipeda

Being one of the largest cities in Lithuania, getting to Klaipeda is fairly easy and it is well connected both domestically and internationally. There are multiple bus connections per day from all major cities in Lithuania and Riga . There is also a domestic train station that connects Klaipeda with Vilnius , Kretinga, and Šiauliai.

Being a port city, it is also possible to reach Klaipeda by ferry. There are daily ferry connections with Kiel and Sassnitz in Germany and Karlshamn, Sweden.

The closest airport is Palanga International, which is roughly 40 kilometres north of Klaipeda and has regularly scheduled flights to and from European cities like London , Copenhagen and Oslo .

If you arrive by car, Klaipeda is very well connected with Vilnius and Kaunas and there is ample affordable parking available throughout the city.

Things to Do in Klaipeda

Though quite small in size, there are a surprising amount of things to do in Klaipeda and we would recommend spending, at the very least, one full day exploring the city. Ideally, spending two or three nights in Klaipeda would give you enough time to really get a feel for the town while also allowing you to spend one day on the beautiful Curonian Spit.

The Old Town in Klaipeda is incredibly quaint and compact and, due to the fact that the streets are on a grid system, refreshingly easy to navigate. Take an hour or two to wander through the cobbled streets and admire the beautiful architecture while learning about the fascinating history of the city.

Throughout most of its history, Klaipeda was part of the Kingdom of Prussia, and the city was called Memel. Under Prussian rule, the city became a prosperous port due to its northern location, connections, and the fact that it is ice-free. You will find evidence of the German influence scattered about the Old Town.

It wasn’t until the end of the First World War that Klaipeda became a part of a newly independent Lithuania and adopted its current name. However, like the rest of the country, Klaipeda was also subject to both Nazi and Soviet occupation until secession from the union in 1990.

There is no denying that exploring the lovely Old Town is one of the top things to do in Klaipeda.

The main square in Klaipeda's Old Town

Sculpture Park

Located in the north part of the city, the Sculpture Park is one of the top destinations for Klaipeda sightseeing. The area where the park is located was once a cemetery but in 1977, it was turned into an art exhibition by the Soviet government. Residents were given the opportunity to rebury their loved ones in another cemetery in Klaipeda, though not all did.

The park contains 116 sculptures that were constructed between 1977 and 1991 and it is an interesting place to wander through while in Klaipeda.

Though the west side of the city is located on the Curonian Lagoon, which leads out to the Baltic Sea, Klaipeda is also situated at the mouth of the Danė River. Along the riverfront, there are numerous cafes, restaurants, and bars and it can be an incredibly picturesque place to walk along.

The river is also the permanent home of the massive sailing vessel, Meridianas, which now functions as a unique restaurant. Seeing the tall ship amongst the backdrop of the classical architecture of the Old Town will take you back to a Klaipeda of long ago.

If the weather is nice, it is also possible to hire a pedal boat on the river. This can be a great opportunity to see Klaipeda from a different perspective.

Botanical Garden

The Klaipeda University Botanical Garden offers a wonderful escape from the city. It is free to enter the grounds and stroll around the expansive botanical garden, which is home to a wide array of native fauna.

Most of the plants are labelled, so you are able to know what they are. There are also a number of benches throughout the garden, which makes it a fantastic area to have a picnic.

Though the botanical garden is located a bit outside of the city centre, it is easy to access by public transport and even easier if you have your own car.

Visit Klaipeda’s Many Museums

Klaipeda has an interesting history as an important port city for the Kingdom of Prussia, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and Lithuania today.

Because of its long history, there are many museums to visit in order to learn more. Visiting museums is also a great idea if you’re wondering what to do in Klaipeda if the weather isn’t working in your favour.

Blacksmith’s Museum

Klaipeda has a long history of blacksmiths and this museum will help you learn all about this trade. Blacksmiths in Klaipeda had been well-known dating back to the 16th century and this unique museum gives an interesting insight into the craft.

There is also a collection of crosses and fencing exhibited here that were once part of the cemetery that has become the sculpture park.

History Museum of Lithuania Minor

If you’re interested in learning more about the history of this particular area of Lithuania, then the History Museum of Lithuania Minor is a great place to do that. The museum is fairly small and you can easily see the whole thing the 30 minutes to one hour.

Castle Museum

Though originally established by Baltic tribes, Klaipeda didn’t officially become the city where it stands today until the knights of the Teutonic Order began to construct the city and a castle in the 13th century.

Though the castle does not stand today, the Castle Museum is located where it once stood and provides some interesting information about the history of Lithuania’s third largest city.

Visit the Curonian Spit

While there are certainly highlights in the city itself that make it a great place to visit, it is impossible to deny that a trip to the gorgeous Curonian Spit isn’t one of the best things to do in Klaipeda.

With the beautiful forest and imposing sand dunes making way to pristine, white-sand beaches and charming fishing villages, it is undeniable that the Curonian Spit is an unmissable destination in Lithuania.

Beautiful sand dunes on the Curonian Spit

How to get to the Curonian Spit

Because of its volatile ecosystem, there are no bridges to the Curonian Spit and the only way to get there is by ferry. There are two ferry terminals to choose from when trying to get there, the Old Ferry Port is only for foot and bicycle traffic and is located just outside of the Old Town.

Boats leave roughly every 30 minutes and costs €1.30 per person for a return ticket, regardless if you are travelling with a bicycle or not.

If you have a car and want to take the Klaipeda ferry to the Curonian Spit, you will need to head to the New Ferry Port a couple of kilometres south of the passenger ferry. Boats leave every 20 minutes and it costs €18.30 per vehicle for a return ticket, no matter the number of people in the car.

What to see on the Curonian Spit

The Curonian Spit is a narrow strip of land that is shared by both Russia and Lithuania. If you are visiting the spit from Klaipeda, it is likely you will only be visiting the Lithuania side.

It is a national park and nature reserve with some of the most impressive sand dunes in the Baltics along with beautiful beaches and charming fishing villages.

The main attractions in the Curonian Spit include the Paranids Dune, the hill of witches, Smiltyne beach and the towns of Nida and Juodkrante. There are also great cycling trails throughout the spit and it can be a great place to explore on two wheels.

Another cool and trendy restaurant in Klaipeda’s Old Town, MOMO Grill is a great option for either a great lunch or an inventive dinner. They have a simple menu of locally sourced ingredients and it is an incredibly popular place to eat in Klaipeda.

Restoranas Friedricho Pasazas

If you’re looking for a laid back and tasty meal in Klaipeda, then look no further than Restoranas Friedricho Pasazas . Located just a little bit outside the Old Town, this is a popular spot with both tourists and locals alike. They serve a lot of local seafood, some Lithuanian classics, and a few international favourites as well.

The Top Things to Do and See in Klaipeda

The Black Ghost sculpture is one of Klaipedas more unusual attractions

The city of Klaipeda is a cosy port and gateway to the Curonian Spit in Lithuania . In the summer months, cruise ships dock here and tourists fill the quaint old town. Formerly an important trading post with Germany, the town is dotted with beautiful half-timbered houses that are relics from the past. Klaipeda is a great stop over for a relaxing weekend or a short stay before or after an active trip to the Curonian Spit.

1. visit the lithuanian sea museum.

The Lithuanian Sea Museum is situated at the northernmost tip of the Curonian Spit, across the water from central Klaipeda. Its key attraction is a dolphinarium, where you can see shows starring Black Sea bottlenose dolphins, Baltic seals and Steller sea lions – the shows are held in an annexed building and require separate tickets. In the main building, underwater walkways pass through tanks of psychedelic coral, brightly-coloured fish and spooky-looking crustaceans. There’s a small on-site cafe for refreshments.

Monai’s chefs perform in a shiny show-kitchen, separated from the dining room by a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. They produce some of the most artfully presented cuisine in Klaipeda, with dishes such as tuna tartar and duck dumplings displaying creative flair as well as respect for ingredients. Weekends are all about hangover-busting brunches of pancakes, bacon and eggs, accompanied by perfectly balanced mimosas. Booking a few days ahead is recommended, as everyone wants a table here.

10. Lose yourself in time at the Museum of Clocks

Housed in a country villa dating from 1820, Klaipeda’s Museum of Clocks takes a detailed look at the ingenuity with which humans have measured time over the centuries. Learn all about sundials, hourglasses, fire and water clocks on the ground floor, before moving upstairs to explore a collection of timepieces from the Renaissance through to the present day. Also check out Sundial Park, a tranquil space behind the main building with several working sundials.

The city of Klaipeda is sure to impress you with its stunning architecture, cobbled streets, and sandy beaches. And above all, it is brimming with culture and local legends and has a thriving food scene.

Klaipeda lithuania

Where is Klaipeda

Klaipeda is located in western Lithuania along the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is the country’s third-largest city, as well as its only seaport. The exact geographical location of this stunning city are as follows: 55° 45′ 0″ N, 21° 10′ 0″ E

How to Get to Klaipeda

Klaipeda, situated between Latvia, Russia, and the Baltic Sea, can be easily accessed via the sea, land, or air. Detailed below are the various forms of transportation that can be used to reach Lithuania’s seaport city.

If you’re visiting Vilnius , Lithuania, you can travel into Klaipeda by car or express bus. A four-lane expressway connects the city with Vilnius, Kaunas, and Palanga. The duration of the drive is between 3 and 4 hours during weekdays, but during the weekend when it seems like the whole of Lithuania want to visit the cost the trip is notorious for its traffic jam, on Friday going towards Klaipeda and on Sunday when people travel back home again, during those days the drive can take 6 and even up to 8 hours.

There are also passenger trains running between Vilnius, Radviliskis, and Klaipeda station. Both routes include stops in various towns – namely Plungė, Kretinga, Šiauliai, and Telšiai. The journey by train from Lithuania’s center to the Baltic Sea generally lasts around 4 hours.

Klaipeda has no passenger airport; however, there is an airport in Palanga about 30 kilometers (19 miles) away. From the airport, you can take the shuttle to Klaipeda. Traveling from Palanga Airport to this Baltic Sea town takes around 40 minutes.

As Lithuania’s only seaport, the city of Klaipeda can be easily accessed by ferry from Germany and Sweden. These boats run overnight to and from Klaipeda port and are able to carry both passengers and cars. The duration of this trip varies between 11 and 26 hours. There are also a number of cruise ships that visit the city during the summer.

Best Time to Visit Klaipeda

Lithuania is known to have short summers and freezing winters. A good time to visit is during the warmer seasons when the weather is good enough to enjoy a walk through the city or along the beach.

Beach time in the Baltics is best enjoyed from June to August. To avoid the crowds, visit either side of summer, in May or September. During this time, the weather is still pleasant enough for a stroll through the city’s cobbled streets; however, you will need a jacket.

In fact, packing an umbrella and rain jacket is a good idea no matter when you’re traveling to this beautiful country.

Top Things to Do in Klaipeda, Lithuania

From the city with its many historical sites and stunning architecture to the coast with its beautiful beaches, there is plenty to see and do in Klaipeda. Below are the top attractions in and around the city.

Curonian Spit sun watch lithuania

There is plenty to do here, and a Curonian Spit day tour is one of the best ways to see everything. The destination’s biggest draw is the Parnidis Dunes, which is a 52-meter (170 feet) high dune in Nida. Explore the Klaipeda Old Town

Old town Klaipeda lithunia

A favorite activity amongst travelers visiting Klaipeda is exploring the Old Town. This is a small town, so small that you can walk through it in 15 minutes or less. While this spot is a popular attraction, it is seldom too crowded. More often than not, you will find yourself enjoying the peace and quiet, surrounded by some of the city’s most beautiful architecture and monuments.

There's a distinctly German flavour to Klaipėda (klai-pey-da). Lithuania's third-largest city, formerly known as Memel, was part of the Prussian Kingdom until the region wrestled to autonomy in 1923. Buildings in the compact, cobblestoned Old Town are constructed in the German fachwerk style – that is, with distinctive half-timbered facades. Beyond the orderly historic centre, the modern city sprawls into an industrial forest of cranes and shipyards, sliced in two by the Danė River as it meanders into the Baltic Sea.

Things To Do In Klaipeda And Ways Of Getting To Curonian Spit

Table of Contents:

Klaipeda is one of the most beautiful port cities in Lithuania. It’s also a getaway to the Curonian Spit- a green paradise with kilometers of white-sand beaches. Although the town is not big, there are many things to do in Klaipeda. You can be sure you won’t get bored there!

A few years ago, we took a month-long road trip through Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. After visiting the beautiful Tallinn , vibrant Riga , awesome Vilnius , amazing Jurmala, and peaceful Otepaa, Klaipeda and the Curonian Spit were next on our list.

It turned out that this part of Lithuania is the hidden gem of Europe, still undiscovered and heartbreakingly beautiful. The unspoiled nature, amazing beaches, and the pristine forests look like they’ve been taken out of the fairy tale. In this post, you will find the most interesting things to see in Klaipeda and all the important information about Klaipeda ferry to Curonian Spit.

The ultimate guide to Klaipeda and the Curonian Spit

What To See In Klaipeda Lithuania?

Take a walk around the old town.

Klaipeda Theatre Square is one of the things to do in Klaipeda

Visiting the Old Town is one of the best things to do in Klaipeda. Most of the best tourist attractions are located within the Old Town area.

It is quite small- you can walk through it in less than 15 minutes. Even though it is not a vibrant place, it’s still worth visiting. You don’t have to beat the crowds while sightseeing and you can really enjoy the quiet and peaceful time surrounded by beautiful architecture and monuments.

Spot The Interesting Statues

Black ghost of Klaipeda

The Theatre Square with   the sculpture  Annchen von Tarau is considered as the heart of Klaipeda Old City.

There are many small hidden sculptures in the Old Town (just like in Wroclaw, Poland ), so walk around and try to find as many of them as you can! My favorite is the statue of The Black Ghost , you can find it at the pier at Zveju street.

Visit The Castle Museum

Dziugas House things to do in klaipeda lithuania

If you are looking for more interesting things to do in Klaipeda Lithuania, head to The Castle Museum . There was a big and beautiful castle in the past in Klaipeda but it was destroyed several times. It is being restored right now.

The museum is available to visit though, so be sure to go there! You can learn there a lot about the history of Klaipeda, which is surprisingly complicated.

The other Klaipeda attractions worth visiting are The Blacksmith’s Museum , The History Museum of Lithuania Minor, and The Museum of Clocks .

Walk Around The Klaipėda Sculpture Park

Even though the sculptures are not that impressive, visiting Martynas Mazvydas is one of the best things to do in Klaipeda.

Take a relaxing walk around the park and see the big, stone sculptures.

Have Dinner At The Meridianas Ship

Meridianas Klaipeda

The big, white ship is a landmark of the town and must-see during your Klaipeda sightseeing. It is standing in the heart of the Old Town and cannot be missed by any traveler visiting the city. It is both a tourist attraction and one of the best restaurants in Klaipeda.

Meridianas has a long and tumultuous history, it was the USRR’s ( Russian ) ship in the past. It has been renovated recently and turned into a luxury restaurant.

No matter if you want to have dinner or not, be sure to get inside the ship. You can watch a short movie about Meridianas there. That will help you understand the importance of this ship for the people of Klaipeda.

The real captain is working on Meridianas, be sure to find him to get to know more about the ship!

Try Local Food At Friedricho Pasazas

Zeppelins- traditional Lithuanian food

The town is small that’s why you don’t really have many restaurants in Klaipeda to choose from.

There is one place where you can find everything you need though. It is called Friedricho Pasazas . There are six restaurants in this complex there including bakery, pizzeria, winery, steakhouse, high-end restaurant, and tavern, where you can try traditional Lithuanian food.

Have Fun At Dino Park

Located about 15 minutes drive from the town, a Dino Park is one of the best things to do in Klaipeda with kids.

They can see there the real-size dinosaurs that are both scary and impressive! What’s more, there are some real animals on the farm (lamas, rabbits, etc.) which is a great attraction, especially for the smallest children.

When visiting Dino Park, be sure to take a photo of the nearby Upside Down house !

Take A Day Trip To The Curonian Spit

There are two main Lithuanian towns at Curonian Spit:  Juodkrante and Nida . There are some hotels and restaurants there, so you can stay on the peninsula for a night.

For now, there is one gas station and one bigger grocery store (Maxima) in Nida.

Curonian Spit is famous for unspoiled nature. You can never get bored of its beautiful 50-kilometers long beach.

White beach in Nida

Be sure to go to the dunes in Nida while in Curonian Spit. You have to climb up to get there but the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking!

The buildings on the peninsula are unique and colorful. I have never seen anything like them before.

It is worth to visit the Ethnographic Fishermen’s Museum in Nida to get to know a little bit more about Curonian Spit and its people.

The other great tourist attractions on the peninsula are Thomas Mann Museum and Amber Museum in Nida & Witches Hill and Dendrological Path in Juodkrante.

The full list of tourist attractions in Neringa, you can find here .

How To Get To Curonian Spit From Klaipeda?

The beautiful Curonian Spit is the main reason why people are visiting Klaipeda. It is located on the peninsula, which means the only way you can get there from Lithuania is by the Curonian Spit ferry. It is connected with Belarus by land.

There are two kinds of Klaipeda ferry that you can take to Curonian Spit:

The New Port

Nemuno str.8

klaipeda tourist attractions

If you are looking for the Klaipeda car ferry , the New Port is your place to go.

The Lithuanian part of the Curonian Spit is 50 kilometers (31 miles) long, so it is really recommended to take your vehicle on the peninsula if you want to see everything. Click here to find the cheapest deals for the car rental Klaipeda.

The ferries are leaving every 30 minutes, you don’t need to book anything online, just go to the port and wait in line. If you want, you can check the current Klaipeda ferry timetable here .

The cost of the ferry from Klaipeda to Smiltyne depends on the number of people you are traveling with. On average, you will pay about 15 euro. See the current ferry Klaipeda Smiltyne price here .

It takes about 15 minutes to get from Klaipeda to Smiltyne.

Danės str. 1

The smaller terminal, only for pedestrians and bikers. If you don’t have a car, a trip to Curonian Spit is still doable.

You can either take a ferry to Smiltyne or Marine Museum. You can also find a dolphinarium there, so you may spend many hours on the peninsula without getting bored. All the important information about the prices and timetables can be found here .

Taking A Tour

If you want to save yourself a trouble of organizing the entire trip, join a guided tour to:

  • Curonian Spit from Klaipeda
  • Curonian Spit from Vilnius

The tours are private, so you can customize them according to your needs.

Empty road in Nida

Watch The Dolphins At The Sea Museum

The only dolphinarium in Klaipeda is located in the Curonian Spit.

I am mentioning it in the end on purpose- you can either see it after visiting the peninsula or simply take a ferry just to see the Sea Museum.

What’s The Best Accommodation In Klaipeda?

For luxury travelers.

Michaelson Boutique Hotel is not only one of the best hotels in Klaipeda but also in the entire country of Lithuania.

There is one place worth recommending- it’s called Michaelson Boutique Hotel . It’s not only one of the best hotels in Klaipeda but also in the entire country of Lithuania.

Michaelson is situated within the walking distance to the Old Town, right next to the pier. Luxury room, comfortable bed, useful facilities, beautiful bathroom, fast WiFi are the things I liked the most. And breakfast! It was out of this world. The food was freshly prepared (you can actually see it because of the open kitchen) and it was really delicious.

For Foodies

Friedricho Pasazas hotels in Klaipeda.

This boutique hotel is a part of the Friedricho Pasazas . It is a perfect place to stay for all the foodies. You will have the best restaurants in Klaipeda right on your doorstep!

The location is perfect, in the center of Old Town, within the walking distance to all the Klaipeda tourist attractions. The room is big, comfortable, and luxurious. The things we liked the most are the heated floor in the bathroom, the kitchenette, and the unique design of the hotel.

For Home-like Experience

I am a huge fan of Airbnb ! It’s a great option for those who want to feel like home while traveling. If you want to stay in the town longer than just a few days, then Airbnb may be the best accommodation in Klaipeda for you.

Needless to say, I didn’t know about Klaipeda, but it looks really beautiful. The fact that it’s still a hidden gem is even better, so well done to you guys by showing it to us :D

I really enjoyed the pictures as well. How much are those hotels that you mentioned?

Thanks Fabio! Klaipeda is getting more and more popular, this city is developing really fast. We think that the ‘boom’ on Klaipeda will be in few years :). The room in the hotels we mention are about 200 euro for one night.

Thanks, Karolina and Patrick.

Klaipeda and Curonian Split are definitely great choices for visiting. I’m really glad, that you guys found it! Those who are planning a trip to Lithuania shouldn’t have any doubts about visiting the western part of the country. Klaipeda is worth a visit and travelers should spend a bit more time than one day in this area. There are many awesome things to do. Here are some ideas for having a great time in Klaipeda http://www.travelbaltics.eu/13-things-to-do-in-klaipeda/ Also, those who are planning a trip there could consider an idea to stay in Palanga for a while. It’s a Resort Town and it becomes extremely crowded during the peak season. At any other time it’s really great destination for romance lovers.
