Subaru of Indiana Automotive produces its 5,000,000th car

Employees from Subaru of Indiana Automotive, including members of management along with new and long-term associates from different production areas, pose with the plant’s 5 millionth Subaru vehicle, a 2022 Outback Wilderness.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) recently produced its 5-millionth Subaru vehicle, a 2022 Outback Wilderness in Geyer Blue.

According to a recent release, this landmark event comes during SIA's 35th anniversary year.

“Reaching our 35 th anniversary and 5 million Subaru vehicles in the same year provides a great opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come,” Scott Brand, SIA executive vice president, said in a release. “I’m especially proud of our associates and the way they continuously meet our customers’ expectations for safe, quality vehicles.”

Lafayette marks the only Subaru manufacturing facility outside of Japan. SIA currently makes the Ascent, Impreza, Legacy and Outback models. SIA produces around half of all Subaru vehicles sold in North America, according to to company.

SIA was incorporated into Indiana on March 17, 1987. Vehicle production began on Sept. 11 of that year, with just the Legacy and Isuzu Pickup models. Since then, the Isuzu Rodeo, Honda Passport and Toyota Camry models were added to the production lineup.

Since June 2016, SIA has produced exclusively Subaru vehicles.

“Our associates should take tremendous pride in this achievement,” Brand said in the release. “Along with the entire auto industry, the SIA team has persevered through more than two years of supply chain issues and production disruptions while maintaining a focus on quality.”

The 2023 Legacy and the 2023 Outback are scheduled to begin production later this week.

Projected data expects that SIA will produce its 7-millionth vehicle in December this year.

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) is a subsidiary of Subaru Corp. and is the home of North American production for the Ascent, Crosstrek, Legacy and Outback models. SIA employs more than 6,000 associates and is Subaru’s only production facility outside of Asia. Since beginning production in 1989, the plant has increased its annual output of vehicles from 67,000 to nearly 400,000. This equals roughly half of all Subaru vehicles sold in North America. Learn how Subaru vehicles are made in this zero-landfill production facility.

Public tours, lasting up to an hour and a half, are offered at 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, reservations required.

Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. (SIA), part of the Subaru family of companies, is home of North American production for the Ascent, Crosstrek, Legacy and Outback models. SIA employs more than 6,000 associates who are committed to quality, safety and environmental stewardship.

production volume

In May 1986, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (now Subaru Corp.) and Isuzu agreed to enter into a joint venture to establish a manufacturing plant in the U.S. Of the many cities originally explored, 13 sites were eventually chosen for further consideration in seven states, including the state of Indiana. In December 1986, Lafayette was selected as the site for the plant and, in March 1987, Subaru-Isuzu Automotive (SIA) was incorporated in Indiana.

In May 1987, ground was broken for the SIA plant and construction began. The original 2.3-million square foot facility integrated operations from stamping to final assembly. Production of the Subaru Legacy and Isuzu pickup began on September 11, 1989. The plant was officially dedicated on October 16, 1989, with a weeklong grand opening ceremony.

Throughout the years, SIA Associates have built the Subaru Legacy, Outback, Impreza, Baja and Tribeca, as well as the Isuzu Pick-up, Rodeo, Amigo and Axiom and the Honda Passport. In January 2003, SIA became Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc., signifying sole ownership by Subaru Corp. (then Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.). SIA discontinued production of Isuzu vehicles on July 23, 2004, and began to build the Toyota Camry on February 28, 2007, under contract with Toyota. Production of the Camry ended in May 2016 to make way for additional Subaru production. Subaru Impreza production began in late 2016 and the Subaru Ascent joined the production mix in May 2018.

In May 2023, Impreza production ceased at SIA and, in its place, began manufacturing of the Crosstrek 2.5-liter Sport, Limited, and Wilderness Edition.

Subaru Of Indiana Automotive Expands Lafayette Facility, Adds Transmission Assembly

Subaru of Indiana Automotive facility in Lafayette's main entrance. (Samantha Horton/IPB News)

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) is increasing service part production and adding transmission manufacturing to its Lafayette plant. The company says the $158 million investment will help reduce costs and increase growth at the facility.

About half of Subarus sold in North America are produced in Indiana, according to the company.

After several investments the last 10 years at the Lafayette facility, the new expansion will establish a transmission assembly space and increase service part production.

Scott Brand, SIA senior vice president of administration and quality control, says right now, fully assembled transmissions are being shipped from Japan.

“That international commerce is an expensive thing to logistically bring in completed transmission assemblies into the factory and it’s much better for us to produce those,” says Brand. “It gives us one, a little bit of a logistics advantage and secondly it gives us flexibility in our model line-up.”

He says the Lafayette plant has grown with consumer demand and he is optimistic it will continue.

“By bringing transmission here, that is really a crowning achievement for us because Subaru would not make that decision without knowing that SIA was ready to produce good quality,” says Brand. “Because the transmission in a Subaru is the primary component that differentiates our product from others.”

Brand says, initially, the transmission facility will be just for assembly, but could also produce them in-house in the future.

Last year the facility opened a training center on-site that Brand says will be valuable in preparing the 350 employees expected to be hired with the expanded production.

Awful business practice

Promised a vehicle over phone - agreed upon price and my credit was run. Called an hour later and said car had been promised to someone else. Did next to nothing to right their mistake. Avoid this place!

Unhelpful, disappointing, and not worth the time

Contacted the dealership about potentially trading in my vehicle to get a used vehicle. Spent a good portion of the day texting the dealership so they had an understanding of what I was looking for. I had selected two cars I wanted (both under 50,000). I also informed the dealership that I was limited on time. Upon arrival the dealership could not locate the vehicle I wanted to drive and gave me a brand new car to test drive which I was clear I did not want a brand new vehicle. The price they quoted me for was way under what the vehicle was worth. A different dealership offered me 3,000 more for my vehicle prior to negotiating. Once I returned home I received a text stating they found the Subaru I wanted to test drive and it was getting the transmission completely replaced (very concerning as the car did not even have 50,000 miles on it). Go elsewhere and be treated with respect.

  • Shopped for a used car

Hi Laura, thank you for sharing the details of your recent visit. We apologize that we did not deliver the outcome you were expecting, and appreciate your time. We wish you the best of luck with your future automotive needs.

horrible communication

We're scheduled to look at a 2019 jeep cherokee at 430 on a Monday. They emailed and confirmed that the vehicle was still available Monday morning and then called my wife at 330 and again said it was available if we were still interested. So we drive 40 minutes just to be told that the car had been sold Saturday. They then proceeded to try and get us to purchase a different vehicle from them. 1 Star is to high for the experience I had. Would not recommend!

  • Quality of repair —
  • Overall facilities —

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We are concerned with your comments, and we will investigate them further to ensure this does not happen again. We extend our sincerest apologies, and we hope that you will allow us the opportunity to earn your business in the future, Brad Belaire - General Manager - 765-449-8100

Great low pressure experience

I went to Bob Rohrman Subaru to look at a used 2013 Ford Expedition. I called them as soon as I saw the vehicle on Autotrader.com. The sales rep that I talked to promptly setup an appointment for me to come in and test drive the vehicle. I arrived a few minutes early on a Saturday morning, the vehicle was sitting right out in front of the building with the sales rep standing beside it waiting for me. He was very courteous, answered all of my questions, and encouraged myself and my girlfriend to take a test drive for as long as we felt necessary. Although I ended up purchasing a different Expedition from another dealer, the experience at Bob Rohrman Subaru was one of my better used car shopping experiences. I would definitely recommend this dealership to anyone looking for a new or used vehicle.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, Mike! We appreciate you coming to visit us here at Bob Rohrman Subaru, and hope we have the opportunity to work with you in the future. Take care!

Great Experience

We had a great experience at this dealership. Our appointment was at 9:30 and when we arrived the car was pulled up to the front ready for us to test drive. Our salesman was very helpful and did not pressure us into anything. Everything moved very quickly. The facility was very clean and employees were frequently disinfecting surfaces while we were there. I would say I am not a fan of car shopping but this wasn't so bad. The right salesman makes the difference.

  • Buying process 5.0
  • Overall experience 5.0
  • Did make a purchase

Thank you for the kind review, Brad! We're glad you had a great experience with our team here at Bob Rohrman Subaru, and we hope we have the opportunity to work with you agian in the future. In the meantime, take care and enjoy your new vehicle!

Nate Bush the GM is untrustworthy and dishonest. I negotiated a deal on a car by phone and when I got to the dealer 40min later was told they had sold the car to someone who financed it. Since I was a cash sale the made more financing it. Don't trust this dealership as it is the 'ole bs type of slick stuff. Bob Rohrman days of honesty are over!

No apparent interest to make a deal

Made 100 mile round trip to possibly trade up. They wanted to give me minimum trade price on my excellent truck. No effort to improve on that, or to lower their price. I told them I had a possibility of selling mine outright. They let me walk out without any offer or incentive to do business with them. I emailed the internet sales manager to tell him what happened, and did not receive the courtesy of a explanation or response. Didn't feel like there was any interest on their part at all. Recently talked to a dealer in Ft. Wayne, and got a completely positive and interested attitude. After the travel ban eases. I will probably be up there to visit, and maybe drive a newer truck back home.

Hello – we apologize that we were unable to make a deal this time around, and appreciate you taking the time to share this feedback. If you’d like to speak with us in further detail, please don’t hesitate to reach out directly. Thank you.

Not Great Experience

Buying experience was ok. Watch out for the dealer add-ons including Pivotal Security. Do your research on the internet first on this. Seems like a money grab. I was informed all their cars have it installed before you even buy the car and it is just simply $400 worth of stickers on top of your agreed upon sale price. I didn’t have the chance not to elect or remove this. Expect then an additional $300 of dealership on top of that. Purchased a 2019 Subaru “Certified” car with extra confidence but found after a long drive home (5hrs) the alignment was off. Steering wheel was at the 11 minute clock position when driving straight down the road. I am just hoping moving forward that was the only miss in their certified inspection. After working with the dealership for advice with nothing happening for over a month I took it to my local Subaru dealer and had it covered under warranty. Glad to be working with my local dealership moving forward.

Bob Rohrman Subaru is our new go-to

Our experience with Bob Rohrman Subaru was one of the best car buying experiences we've ever had! And we drove nearly 3 hours to get there because the prices were so good. Marvin was amazing to work with and got us everything we asked for an then some. We felt very taken care of and will definitely be back the next time we need a vehicle. Thank you Marvin!

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! We appreciate you coming to visit us here at Bob Rohrman Subaru, and are happy to hear that Marvin could make it worth the drive. It was a pleasure working with you and we look forward to doing so again in the future!

They came through.

After not so good experiences at two other dealers that day I was going to just give up on looking for a used truck. Q went to sales manager Avery with my situation. The guys came thru with flying colors and I drove my new pre-owned Chevy truck home. Thanks guys for caring.

Learn ‘how it’s made’ at these five factory tours

Factory tours are a fun way for groups to learn “how it’s made.” These types of tours take groups behind-the-scenes while sharing history, giving demonstrations and often, offering free samples. Factory tours also give travelers interesting anecdotes to return home with. Consider these five tours for a future group itinerary.

1. The Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour Everett, Washington

Boeing 787 Dreamliner assembly line, Boeing Tour, Everett, Wash.

Experience the future of flight in one of Seattle’s most popular attractions. The facility is home to the 747, 767, 777 and 787 Dreamliner lines of airplanes.

The center in Washington gives groups the opportunity to watch Dreamliner jets being assembled right before their eyes. While visiting, groups will get the opportunity to design their own airplane and have a picture taken with the Boeing factory as the background. Tours of the plant last 90 minutes. The center has a variety of exhibits to educate guests on airplanes and flight, including: “Flight Systems,” “Passenger Experience, ”“Future Concepts,” “Airplane Design,” and “Destiny” — the U.S. Laboratory Module.

2. Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour Waterbury, Vermont

Ben & Jerry’s factory tour, Waterbury, Vt.

Ben & Jerry’s offers a sweet experience for groups. Groups can take a 30-minute guided tour of the factory and see every step of the ice cream-making process.

“The Factory Tour is a chance for Ben & Jerry’s fans to see how their favorite ice cream is made,” said Sam Lacasse, factory tour manager. “Our fans eat pints of Ben & Jerry’s at home, but when they visit the factory, they get immersed in our brand and history. As they tour the factory, fans learn how two guys in a gas station started it all. Afterward, fans can grab a scoop of their favorite flavor at the Scoop Shop and find that perfect tie-dye shirt to take home. Our fans love the opportunity to visit Vermont and experience what peace, love and ice cream really means!”

3. Subaru of Indiana Automotive Factory Tours Lafayette, Indiana

Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc., Lafayette, Ind.

Take guided factory tours of an award-winning automotive assembly facility in Lafayette. Witness the production of a Subaru vehicle from beginning to end while walking 1 mile via an elevated catwalk.

Groups observe as giant presses turn coils of steel into the metal structure of vehicles in the stamping process. Then, they will get to witness more than 860 robots in the body assembly area followed by watching over 5,000 parts being added in the paint shop. And finally, visitors see the cars go through the testing phase that proves how important quality and safety is to Subaru.

4. Hershey’s Chocolate World Hershey, Pennsylvania

Hershey’s Chocolate Tour, Hershey’s Chocolate World, Hershey, Pa.

Explore the wonders of chocolate and get surrounded by sweets at Hershey’s Chocolate World. Through free factory tours, witness how Hershey’s combines cocoa beans, fresh milk and sugar into that delightful chocolate bar people have enjoyed for decades.

Groups can create their own candy bar at the Create Your Own Candy Bar Factory by choosing their own ingredients and designing a wrapper. Or they can get immersed in the Chocolate Tasting Experience by learning how to engage all senses while tasting chocolate.

Save time to experience The 4-D Chocolate Mystery. Participants can interact with the characters through digital animation and special effects. Or, hop on a trolley ride for an in-depth look at the history of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and the story behind Milton S. Hershey.

5. Jelly Belly Factory Tour Fairfield, California

Jelly Belly Factory Tour, Fairfield, Calif.

Guided factory tours of the Jelly Belly factory are free and take groups along a ¼ mile stretch of the factory that is home to the well-known Jelly Belly jelly beans. Groups get a birds-eye view of the facility where the colorful treats are made. Visitors can, of course, expect to taste free samples during the tour.

“Visitors love being able to take a complimentary and self-guided tour around a working candy factory, and this is the only place where they can see Jelly Belly jelly beans being made,” said John Jamison, vice president of retail operations. “They have a birds-eye view of the whole operation from the elevated tour lane, and HD/4K videos offer an up-close-and-personal look at the activities that take place throughout the factory. There are also interactive games and exhibits along the way, and each guest will end the tour with a free bag of Jelly Belly beans.”
