The Ultimate Guide to Greenville's Breweries

I'll drink to that .

ubbling quietly among Greenville’s signature boutiques, award-winning eats, and the energetic buzz of daily traffic, is a burgeoning world of taste-makers and Brewmasters. Finding its roots in Southern heritage and twisting its way into modern practice, a craft beer culture is booming in Upstate South Carolina and shows no sign of slowing anytime soon. With a pinch of Appalachian air, a touch of small-town soil, and a healthy dose of ingenuity, Greenville has cultivated a craft brewing style and philosophy all its own—one that breathes fresh, frothy life into this already cool-as-can-be community.

All of Greenville’s regional breweries produce an array of beverages that’s as extensive as it is impressive, from crowd-pleasing pale ales to bold sours and hearty stouts. Shaped by a long legacy of small-batch brewing and a variety of influences, both domestic and international, Greenville is quickly gaining a reputation among craft brewing enthusiasts not only for its innovative spirits but as a friendly, beer-centric community that welcomes newcomers and connoisseurs alike.

POPULAR BREWERIES

Liability brewing co. .

What started as a home-brewing experiment yielded this new addition to Greenville's craft-beer scene at the renovated historic Westone development (formerly the site of Battery & Electric Company). Liability has sixteen beers on tap ranging from pale ale to black lager. After trying out their beer, you can head next door for some Chicago-style pizza at World Piece or pulled pork and smoked chicken wings at Moe's Original Bar B Que.  10 W. Stone Ave., Suite D (Westone)

Fireforge Crafted Beer

This cozy warehouse brewery, located in the heart of downtown, keeps 15+ house-brewed beers on tap, offers snacks and sandwiches, plus a biergarden and adjacent garage for outdoor and open-air seating. Enjoy live music at Fireforge  while imbibing a range of classic styles to adventurous twists like Perlin's Ghost Pepper Pale (American Pale Ale) and Tampanian Devil Belgian Tripel with guava and star anise. 311 E. Washington St.

Carolina Bauernhaus Greenville

This brewery's second location is in the Poe West development in the Village of West Greenville   (the original is located 40 minutes SW in nearby Anderson, SC). Dubbed "Pub West," the Bauernhaus offers uniquely handcrafted ales, ciders, and meads.  Carolina Bauernhaus considers itself a farmhouse brewery (where rustic meets industrial) and locally sources its yeast, hops, fruits, and grains to pay homage to the area's rich agricultural resources. Outdoors you can expect to find both high-top and picnic tables, hammocks, bocce ball, corn hole, live music on the weekends, and food trucks.  556 Perry Ave. (Poe West)

Southernside Brewing Co.

Set right on the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail with an expansive indoor space, a delectable menu, and an outdoor area for good conversation and yard games, make sure that Southernside is on your must-visit list. This brewery has a full Southern-infused menu that includes mouth-watering appetizers like truffle parmesan fries, deviled eggs, pimento mac n' cheese, and apple pie with ice cream. Even though it's a brewery, this establishment also has its liquor license and can serve a full array of cocktails as well as wine.  25 Delano Dr., Unit D.

Magnetic South Brewery

Located at Judson Mill and making its debut at 10,000 square feet, Magnetic South Brewery focuses on creating a high-energy, family-friendly brewery with a fun taproom space. This is a place where the novice beer drinker and the craft beer enthusiast can come together to share and enjoy quality beverages, mouthwatering cuisine, and overall good times. The Magnetic South brand aims to embody the spirit of true Southern hospitality, believing that with everything they have to offer, these are the things that make the South "Magnetic."  701 Easley Bridge Rd., Suite 4155 (Judson Mill)

Pangaea Brewing Company

Located in The Commons, next to Unity Park and the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail , Pangaea was built from the love of bringing people together. With a full kitchen, taproom, wine, and sodas (and did we mention they're dog-friendly?), Pangaea Brewing Company is  the perfect pit stop along the trail .  If that's not enough to get you in, the brewery regularly offers Comedy Night, Trivia Night, Funky Friday beer releases, and special weekend brunch offerings.  115 Welborn St. ( The Commons )

Yee-Haw Brewing Co.

With a name like Yee-Haw , you'd better show up ready for fun. Located downtown just off of Main Street, this taproom is the perfect hangout for the active urban set. The World Beer Cup award-winning Dunkel (plus some delicious pilsners, pale ale, high gravity and seasonal options) and 24-hour-brined chargrilled wings highlight the eats and drinks, and a courtyard full of yard games is right outside.  307 E. McBee Ave., Suite C.

Thomas Creek Brewery

Before the craft beer renaissance hit Upstate South Carolina, there was Thomas Creek . This Greenville stalwart has been crafting beer with pristine water from the Blue Ridge since 1998, with a strong stable of ales, stouts, and IPAs as well as seasonal, atypical, and specialty brews. And if you seek enjoyment that goes beyond their tasting room and patio, Thomas Creek also offers supplies for the home brewer. 2054 Piedmont Hwy.

BridgeWay Brewing Co.

Do you want to have a beer in a castle? There is but one true answer and that’s an emphatic “yes!” Located in BridgeWay Station just down the road in Simpsonville, Bridgeway Brewing Co. is one of the coolest-looking places from the outside, but inside, there’s some serious sudsing going on in a loose and fun environment. You’ll find a wide selection of house-made beers on tap and a whole lot of IPAs to choose from. There’s also a full liquor bar, so you can have a house special cocktail or your favorite stand-by if that’s more your thing. Bridgeway Brewing is family-friendly and offers four lanes for duckpin bowling, which is a miniaturized version of traditional bowling, making this an excellent option for date night. 610 BridgeWay Blvd., Mauldin (Bridgeway Station)

Other Lands

Other Lands is true to its name. Opened in the North Main area of Greenville, walking into Other Lands is truly like walking into another land. The outside world is rushing and stressing, yet time slows down at Other Lands, and that’s by design. Sip on a selection of 15 house-made beers on draft, plus three more in rotating guest brewer spots. Along with a diverse beer menu, Other Lands has delicious local coffee, espresso, and tea, along with a food menu that includes small bites and sandwiches. It’s the place to be if you’re looking for more than just a moment of zen. 731 Rutherford Rd.

Tetrad Brewing Company

This small-batch craft brewery in downtown Greenville is co-owned by brothers-in-law John Bucher and Chad Tydings. Tetrad's 3½ barrel system produces classic beer styles with a modern twist using time-honored brewing techniques. Curious about the name? Tetrad means a group of four; a theme that can be found throughout the owners' personal lives, as well as their new-found brewing life. (Only 4 ingredients are used to make beer: water, malts, hops, and yeast.) 603 E. Stone Ave.

The Eighth State Brewing Company

Once upon a time it was known as the Upstate Craft Beer Co., but Eighth State has been completely reimagined and reinvented. Housed in the old Claussen Bakery, this brewpub is a creative take on beer, food, and the overall taproom experience. Modern beer and cocktail offerings range from draft cocktails to beer slushies. A rotating menu, weekly Bingo, and live music round out the experience. 400 Augusta St.

Think Tank Brew Lab

This brewery is one of the largest in the area at 21,000 sq. ft. and is able to accommodate hundreds of happy beer enthusiasts. The other bonus? It's trailside—perched right along the expanded Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail at The Junction at Downtown Airport—and offers grab-and-go drinks and bites to eat. There are 20+ brews on tap as well as a full food menu, wine, coffee, and soda offerings, a stage, event space, and an expansive biergarten for playing outdoor games and other outdoor events. The concept is similar to Sierra Nevada in Asheville, NC, which the founder/brewmaster calls "his favorite place in the world."  101 Airport Rd. (The Junction at Downtown Airport)

The Velo Fellow

If you want a subterranean feel without having to go below ground, make your way over to The Velo Fellow, a publick house and brewery. This British-style pub rests a level underneath Main Street, and provides a true-to-life UK flair with an Old-World atmosphere, handcrafted beers, and good company. Now brewing in-house as a microbrewery, Velo Fellow always has at least four new brews on tap. Beers pair perfectly with favorites like fish and chips served with a Southern flair; live music and trivia nights also help set the scene.  1 Augusta St.

Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant

This brewery might've gotten its start in Delaware, but Iron Hill lays claim to Greenville with beers like the Upstate Kölsch, a blonde ale made just for us. With over a dozen brews on tap, an airy restaurant, inventive bar menu, and cans and growlers ready to go, this promises to be your new favorite watering hole on Greenville's Eastside.  741 Haywood Rd.

13 Stripes Brewery

Deriving its name from the colonies upon which our nation was built, it’s easy to see why 13 Stripes believes in the importance of legacy and the power that it has in a community. Set in the blooming center of what was once a textile mill, this eclectic embodiment of the American spirit offers new-school taste with an old-school attitude, carefully cultivating every pint it produces. From the open-air atmosphere to the carefully crafted brews on tap, you’ll find pride and a purpose in this beer from your first sip to your last. 250 Mill St., Taylors (Taylors Mill)

Voodoo Brewing Co.

Voodoo Brewing Co. opened its doors in late August 2022 and hasn't looked back. Based in Meadville, PA, this is the first independently owned and operated location in the South. Local owners Dave & Kim Simons are operating Voodoo in the style of a European beer hall with community tables and ample outdoor seating; both kids and pets are welcome. Twenty Voodoo beers are on tap (from their production facility in PA) along with guest taps from other local breweries. Cocktails, ciders, wine, and a full food menu are also offered. 105 Jones St., Fountain Inn

Swamp Rabbit Brewery & Taproom

From the heart of Travelers Rest to the core of downtown Greenville, the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail unites our community in 28 miles of shared experience. In the same spirit, the Swamp Rabbit Brewery & Taproom welcomes all in the hopes of bringing people together around good company and great tastes. From live music shows to Taproom Trivia, Swamp Rabbit fosters several frothy favorites while offering the down-to-earth atmosphere of a true neighborhood watering hole. 26 S. Main St., Travelers Rest

Double Stamp Brewery

Directly on the site of the expansion of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail , joggers, walkers, and cyclists can make one heck of a pit stop at this 5,000-sq-ft brewery featuring a 90s vibe. The brewery's name was inspired by a scene from the movie Dumb & Dumber . ("You can't triple stamp a double stamp!") Located next door to Charleston-based Home Team BBQ , Greektown Grille Express , and  Flying Rabbit Adventures, t he half-acre Oak Tree Park (also part of the Holland Park development) features twelve 100-year-old oak trees for providing shade during the heat of summer.  819 Laurens Rd. (Holland Park)

The Southern Growl Beer Company Brewery

With 60 constantly-changing craft beers on tap and some of the most Insta-worthy food to salivate over (which also changes every eight weeks), this Greer hot-spot opened its own brewery in November '19 in addition to its gastropub—with four times the amount of indoor space + awesome lawn/outdoor space for fun events.  155 N. Buncombe Rd., Greer

Shoeless Brewing Co. | Grapes & Grains

Opened in August 2015, this hidden gem of a brewery is considered the smallest in Upstate South Carolina (which makes it a whole lot more intimate), but it's also the largest home-brew store in the area.  104 Mauldin Rd., Suite A

The Blue Ridge Brewing Co.

Formerly located in downtown Greenville, this well-established restaurant and brewery with delicious home brews and delectable dishes, can now be found in the revitalized historic district of downtown Greer.  308 Trade St., Greer

The Best Breweries In Greenville, South Carolina

The 20-some breweries in and around town are adding to the city's cool factor.

greenville sc brewery tours

Rony Rivera

When Southerners think of beer, they think of Asheville , which has long had the most breweries per capita regionally (and nearly nationwide). There’s room for other opinions, though. Many think of Greenville as Asheville’s slightly older, more mature cousin that's now becoming a sought-after destination. We even named it The South’s Best City on the Rise in March!

Much has changed since Greenville opened its first craft brewery in 1998, and trust us: The 20-some breweries in and around town are adding to the city's cool factor today. If you're visiting the area, let cold beer cool you off on hot days in any of the taprooms below. Staying a while? Snag a four-pack or crowler to take with you on any of the area’s nearby trails.

Pangaea Brewing

Pangaea Brewing is pretty new to the Greenville beer scene, but its inspiration is prehistoric: owner Steve Schofield dreamed up the brewery in college as Jurassic Brewland, a not-so-tragic version of Jurassic Park where folks could drink beer while walking around with dinosaurs. Science was never going to catch up quick enough (or maybe Schofield was just many millenia too late), but the idea pushed him to try his hand at making beer. After attending the lauded UC Davis Master Brewers Program, Schofield and his wife Emily opened Pangaea 30 miles east of where their love story started at Clemson. Try the surprisingly creamy Queen Pinky, a strawberry and vanilla milkshake IPA, or the Sunrise Fifrildi, a peach and mango kveik sour with a name that translates to “butterfly” in Old Norse. The pizza is a must-get: lucky for the transplants who’ve descended upon Greenville in recent years, Pangaea has what many deem the best pizza in town.

Tetrad Brewing Co.

Courtesy Tetrad Brewing Company

Tetrad means “a group of four,” and four is their lucky number. For one thing, besties and brewery owners John Bucher and Chad Tynings would have no business without four key ingredients—hops, grain, yeast, and water—and secondly, the duo has lived in four corners of this country, including north in Alaska, west in Oregon and Utah, east in New York and Vermont, and finally, south, settled in Greenville. Most importantly to them, they’re both dads to two kids. 2 + 2 = 4, and you get Tetrad, where the motto is “Brew 4 the love.” Their brewing ventures began with a Mr. Beer home-brew kit, which today sits atop a shelf in view of all who visit. A portion of proceeds from some of the drinks go to organizations that supported Lisa Tydings, Chad’s cousin, during her battle with cancer.

13 Stripes Brewery

Courtesy 13 Stripes Brewery

Calling all history buffs! 13 Stripes is an American Revolutionary War-themed bar that honors lesser-known heroes of the war with beers like Nathan Hale pale ale and Benjamin Tallmadge amber ale. It has been operating in the revitalized Taylors Mill in nearby Taylors since 2017. To honor the heroes of today, 13 Stripes hosts a free veterans’ muster on the second Thursday of every month, providing a place for those new to the area or just hungry for connection to find and build community. The brewery opened a second location, 13 Stripes River Lodge, along the Saluda River adjacent to the Saluda Outdoor Center last summer. There, you can grab a beer before (and after) you float down the river in one of the outdoor center’s tube rentals, or bring your own kayak and get in at their launch.

Silos Brewing Co.

Silos Brewery

Silos Brewing Co. anchors The Silos, an indoor-outdoor food hall concept developed where the former Dixie Milling Company stands in Greenville’s Easley suburb. Named for the building’s massive grain silos, Silos Brewing offers favorites like a session IPA and German-style pilsner, and you don’t have to go hungry while drinking it. Try Indigo Kitchen, the Indian fusion street food vendor, or Pink Mama’s ice cream, an outpost of the beloved Upstate dairy bar. The brewery doesn’t serve flights, but there’s no limit on how many brews you can sample, so you can be sure you’ll land on something you’ll want one–or two–of. Try the Blue Collar blonde ale or the Mill Town porter, odes to the economic origins of Easley’s new favorite spot.

Thomas Creek

Courtesy Thomas Creek Brewery

Father and son duo Bill and Tom Davis opened Greenville’s OG craft brewery in 1998, years before the now popular town began appearing on trendy travelers’ lists (and years before we dubbed it The South’s Best City on the Rise in March). Due to the popularity of its beers, including its flagship River Falls Red Ale and Trifecta IPA, a collaboration with local sipping spot Community Tap, it has expanded eight times since inception. An output of 23,000 barrels a year puts the founding father of the Greenville beer scene as one of the state’s largest, and its dog-friendly taproom 10 minutes from downtown stays cool on even the hottest days of summer.

Fireforge Brewing

Bonfire Visuals

University of South Carolina alum Brian Cendrowski didn’t know what he’d do with his MBA when he was going for it, but he told the Greenville News in 2021 the knowledge he gained “really paid off in the long run”–especially since the brewery hit its stride just before the pandemic began, which was no doubt a challenging time for businesses and an important time to master the books. Today, the downtown spot is one of the city’s most popular breweries, drawing devotees two or three nights a week with live music and award-winning beer. Try the Tampanian Devil Belgian-Style Tripel Ale, a guava and star anise tripel, which won silver in the Beverage Testing Institute’s 2022 World Beer Championships.

Carolina Bauernhaus

Sarah E Photography

Take a sip of Oconee Pale Ale and know that everything in your mouth hails straight out of Upstate South Carolina. The Cascade and Nugget whole cone hops are grown at Oconee Hop Farm, the barley is Carolina Crisp, and the oats are grown and developed at Clemson. This–creating a truly local experience–was what owners David Thornton, Keston Helfrich, and Brad Thomas set out to do in 2015 when they opened Carolina Bauernhaus. Some ingredients from the Walhalla farm Thornton shares with his wife Casey make their way into the beer, like Single Source Series Opuntia, which is brewed with yeast from sugar derived from their prickly pear tree. The West Greenville location is actually the brewery’s second, following one Anderson, about 40 minutes south. West Greenville opened in 2020.

Golden Grove

Courtesy Golden Grove Farm and Brew

Golden Grove takes entertainment seriously. Want to sit back and relax, or get on your feet and dance? Live music happens weekly at this spacious, rural spot 20 minutes south of downtown. Want to take the entertainment into your own hands? Throw down on the 9-hole disc golf course, which will soon grow to 18 holes. Gluten sensitive folks will love Golden Grove for its gluten-free food options and gluten-reduced beers, which are every bit as tasty as the wheaty kinds.

Birds Fly South

Courtesy Birds Fly South

Owners Shawn and Lindsay Johnson sure are wild. Well, their beer is, anyway, or much of it. Birds Fly South has honed wild, funky, and throwback style beers since 2016. Many of their beers are brewed with Brettanomyces, a fungus that brings the funk, including C’Mon Sunshine, which brought home a bronze from the Great American Beer Festival in 2019 and a silver from the Best in Craft Beer Awards in 2020. The brewers’ pride and joy is their Solera beers, which while brewing are pulled from different vessels and blended together in a main batch to both maintain continuity and evolve flavors.

Welcome to Greenville’s only Certified B Corp brewery, a distinction administrator B Labs says means it “meet[s] the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.” Owners Terry Horner, Shane Horner, and Jeremy Schwendeman nabbed the certification this spring, making Liability one of just 18 breweries nationally who fit the bill. You should feel good about the beer you drink, and at Liability, the feelgood comes twofold–the former reason, and a latter one: It's good, approachable drinking. Try the I Support Pun Control hazy IPA and the Everytime You Close Your Ryes rye beer.

‘I’m cracking this beer, OK?’: Florida man asks police if he can drink a beer during his arrest

PORT ORANGE, Fla. (TMX/Gray News) – A Florida man who was wearing sunglasses at night asked officers to let him crack open another cold one shortly before he was arrested.

The man had allegedly fired a gun during a dispute with a neighbor, police said.

The Port Orange Police Department said officers responded to a dispute between neighbors shortly before 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Body cam video shared by the police department shows the complaining neighbor alleging that his neighbor drove by earlier, opening his window and “telling me he was going to shoot me.”

At that moment, a shot can be heard in the area.

“You see what I mean?” the complaining neighbor says. Several neighbors were outside at the time of the shot.

Officers followed the sound and found the suspect, Brett McPeek, outside in front of his residence.

“That’s him. I’m telling you,” a woman can be heard saying.

An officer directs McPeek to show his hands and stay where he is.

“I’m cracking this beer, OK?” McPeek said.

The officer asks if McPeek has any firearms, and he said no. The officer asks if there are firearms inside his house, and he said yes. Speaking over his radio, the officer said McPeek “has two beers in his hand.”

“This beer is cold, sir, and I wanna drink it,” McPeek said. “Come check me.”

The officer declined, and McPeek said, “Well I’m gonna drink this beer, is that cool?”

McPeek insists he’s “done nothing wrong.” He then complies with orders to keep his hands up and is arrested without incident.

According to police, McPeek was not in possession of the firearm when he was taken into custody, but a search warrant executed at his property turned up two handguns, one of which was a .38 Special revolver with a spent shell casing.

McPeek was booked into the Volusia County Jail with no bond on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.

3 SC dive bars named 'legendary' by Southern Living: Here's what to know

Southern Living recently compiled a list of what it reveres as "The South's Most Legendary Dive Bars," and three South Carolina bars made the list.

Locations in the South are something these bars all share in common. Theme-wise, however, these bars offer their own unique flare. For instance, Clemson's The Esso Club is known as one of the top sports bars across the country, while Charleston's The Griffon is the perfect place for rock 'n' rollers to dine and unite.

And if you enjoy strolling sandy shorelines, Scotty's Beach Bar is for you, where the ocean and stunning sunsets are always in view.

The Griffon is 'the Lowcountry's favorite grungy little dive bar'

18 Vendue Range, Charleston, SC 29401

This English pub has long been considered a historic Charleston legend. Owner and operator Dan Wenz muses the signed dollar bills on the tavern's interior walls, which have piled on for over 25 years, are worth at least a whopping $25,000 altogether, according to Southern Living. Locals and tourists pour into the Griffon on the daily for its affordable, high-quality comfort foods; burgers, fish 'n' chips, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot wings and shrimp are just a few of the happy hour foods served all day long.

What else makes this bar so legendary according to Southern Living? It's love of classic rock, which plays in the background as customers dine. The magazine also labeled the tavern "the Lowcountry's favorite grungy little dive bar." With that being said, one can only wonder what the late Kurt Cobain and his fellow Nirvana members would have thought of the place should they have visited during a case of the late-night munchies.

Scotty's Beach Bar offers 'perfect sunset views'

111 S Seaside Drive, Surfside Beach, SC, 29575

According to Southern Living, Scotty's Beach Bar "has served up many ice-cold beverages for tanned locals and sunburnt visitors alike," offering brews and views. The magazine said the bar gives way to "perfect sunset views," and that out of all the tiki cocktails on the menu, visitors should try the Pain Killer.

Decked out in tropical decor and located right next door to Surfside Oceanfront Hotel, the bar serves up breakfast and lunch daily. Guests can enjoy a side of happy hour specials, karaoke, and live entertainment.

The Esso Club, Clemson

129 Old Greenville Hwy, Clemson, SC, 29631

Clemson University's Esso Club is a Clemson tradition that started back in 1933. It is now known nationwide as a top sports bar, offering panoramic views of Death Valley and Littlejohn. During football season, Clemson fans gather to mingle, catching scores or listening to the bands playing outside. What makes this bar charming is the museum of Clemson Tigers lore within: guests can look at hats signed by Brent Musburger, Dick Vitale, Rodney Carrington and Tim Allen, among others. The walls are also covered in articles and pictures.

Southern Living said the club was "originally housed in a small gas station," and that it has its own signature "Build your own Bloody Mary" bar.

Why do they call it a dive bar?

According to Urban Dictionary , a dive bar is a "well-worn, unglamorous bar, often serving a cheap, simple selection of drinks to regular clientele." It can range from your basic neighborhood pub to the city's grimy hole in the wall. They are usually dimly lit and have dated decor, as well as neon beer signs and packaged beer sales. In parts of Northern and Western Europe, dive bars are referred to as "brown bars" or "brown pubs."

In his book "San Francisco's Best Dive Bars: Drinking and Diving in the City by the Bay," author Todd Dayton describes what distinguishes a dive bar from an ordinary bar:

"For me, the ideal dive bar is run by a beefy guy named Frank, where the aroma of yesterday's beer still hangs in the air, and your quest for clean bathrooms (or toilet paper, for that matter) will go eternally unanswered. A bottle of Bud costs two bucks, a shot of Jack, $3, and Pabst Blue Ribbon is served in a can. The sign outside says Steaks, Dinners, Cocktails — but there hasn't been any food served since FDR was president. The prevailing decorative elements are red Naugahyde, wood-toned Formica, and cinder blocks." he said.
