A Tourist's Guide to Love cast: who's who in the romantic movie

A Tourist’s Guide to Love cast is led by Rachael Leigh Cook. But who else is in the romantic movie?

A Tourist’s Guide to Love is a romantic movie that follows a woman named Amanda, who heads to Vietnam where she's on a mission to decide whether her travel agency should purchase a smaller outpost there.

But, while there, she finds herself becoming interested in Sinh (Scott Ly), a tour guide

The Netflix movie is partly based on screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue’s real-life experiences: She told Tudum : "This idea was based off of the time in my life when, right after college, my safe stable boyfriend unexpectedly broke up with me right as I was about to leave for a five-week trip to Vietnam.

"While I was in Vietnam I realized that that relationship, which was a good one, wasn't actually the best fit for me."

Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda

Amanda Riley is an American visiting Vietnam who finds herself in an international love triangle while she's there trying to make business decisions, leading to an unexpected romance overseas.

She's played by Rachael Leigh Cook who has starred in The Baby-Sitters Club ,  Love, Guaranteed , 11:14 , and  He’s All That .

Scott Ly as Sinh

Sinh is Amanda’s tour guide in Vietnam, who she develops a connection with during her time there, something that takes them both by surprise!

This marks Scott Ly’s first major film role, after years of appearing on television. Fans might recognize him from Criminal Minds , The Young and the Restless , Animal Kingdom , and FBI: Most Wanted.

Ben Feldman as John

John was Amanda’s boyfriend of five years until he moves to Ohio and the couple break up. He's the third part of this complicated love triangle.

Fans might recognize him from TV comedies like  Superstore  and  Silicon Valley. He also starred in the found footage movie Cloverfield and horror hit Friday the 13th .

Missi Pyle as Mona

Mona is Amanda’s business partner and longtime friend, so she's a trusted figure when it comes to her professional and love life.

Missi Pyle is known for her work in Galaxy Quest, Bringing Down the House, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory .

Quinn Trúc Trần as Anh

Anh is Sinh’s cousin and tour guide co-host so she has a key role in the movie.

Actress Quinn Trúc Trần is a Vietnamese-Australian actor and  A Tourist’s Guide to Love  is her second project. Fans may recognize her from My Mr. Wife.

Nsưt Lê Thiện as Ba Noi

Ba Noi is Sinh and Anh’s grandmother and provides a lot of the movie's comic relief, according to Tudum!

Actress Nsưt Lê Thiện has also starred in Goodbye Mother , Until You , The Emperor’s Gift , and Blood Moon Party.

Rachael Leigh Cook has done all that: She’s been a teen breakout star in an iconic high school comedy (“She’s All That”), transitioned to cringe sponsored movies (“Spirit Halloween”), and made the leap to Hallmark Christmas queen (“Tis the Season to Be Merry”). Now, she’s deftly parlayed her everywoman likability into the sweet made-for- Netflix movie “A Tourist’s Guide for Love.”

Yes, “made-for-Netflix” is a category all on its own. While “The Irishman” is considered to be a Netflix Original, “made-for-Netflix” separates the mass-produced movies like the nearly-perfect “Falling for Christmas” and calming background noise of “Murder Mystery 2” from the real Oscar contenders. It’s a sliding scale of quality under the streaming titan’s content umbrella, and Cook’s latest film, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” feels like an adaptation of a sweet viral BookTok romance novel — in the best way possible.

Cook stars as tightly-wound Los Angeles career woman Amanda, who is assigned to go undercover in Vietnam to scope out whether the tour travel company she hires is worth buying out. Just before she jets off to her dream vacation, Amanda is slapped with some unsavory news: Her predictable and practical boyfriend (Ben Feldman) puts their relationship on “hiatus” as he relocates to Ohio. Worse? He doesn’t pop the question like Amanda had expected in her planned-out perfect scenario.

Cue up the steamy Vietnamese tour guide Sinh (Scott Ly), and soon enough, Amanda’s rigid rule-following goes right out the window, much like her neatly-packed luggage that went missing at the airport. And while that sounds predictable, other beats of the film take their own path. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” could have easily opted for Americanized, voyeuristic quality when it comes to capturing the lushness of Vietnam, or even exoticizing Sinh’s character as a local craving Amanda’s sensibilities while in turn teaching her own to loosen up.

Thankfully, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is smarter — and more tasteful — than that.

Amanda does do some “Eat, Pray, Love”-ing during her trip — one that is doomed already by her deceptive reason for the vacation, which could involve buying out Sinh’s family business — but rather, it’s Sinh’s excitement and passion for Vietnamese culture that roots the film, not just the characters’ budding romance. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is a road map for how to love adventure abroad, with dashes of Vietnamese trivia and spiritual facts along the way.

A Tourist's Guide to Love. (L to R) Scott Ly as Sinh and Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda in A Tourist's Guide to Love. Cr. Sasidis Sasisakulporn/Netflix © 2022

Director Steven K. Tsuchida (“Younger,” “Cobra Kai,” “Resort to Love”) doesn’t shy away from shooting the rich cuisine of Vietnam like a CNN travel show reminiscent of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown.” Rom-com touchstones are woven in with cultural traditions; a night market scene is used to adorably show Sinh teaching Amanda how to properly bargain, all while he’s slyly imparting wisdoms like if the vendor doesn’t lower the price, purchasing a symbolic phoenix rising scarf just wasn’t meant to be.

Sure, there’s an inherent eye roll here and there — the traffic tip to jet across the street sans crosswalk is to “always move forward, never back” — but Sinh’s effortlessness translates nicely and makes Amanda learn life lessons by way of local customs. As Sinh warns, their trip and impending romance is not a list of tourist attractions or relationship milestones to be checked off; rather, it’s letting the spontaneity of a life-changing adventure come naturally.

A third act love triangle throws a realistic wrench in the wanderlust romance, with Amanda realizing she was too comfortable and therefore too complacent in her “little corner of the world.” This is a rom-com, albeit “made-for-Netflix,” but one that has an important message that more streamers need to hear.

Eirene Tran Donohue penned the script, with Cook producing the feature, along with Joel S. Rice for Muse Entertainment. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is the first U.S. film to be almost entirely shot in Vietnam, and marks the first international production to film in Vietnam since the global pandemic. The winning production make a case for more films to be set in Vietnam, hopefully opening up Netflix’s international production presence just as it deepens Cook’s rom-com roots extend far past the Hallmark Channel to more roles (and parts!) unknown.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is now streaming on Netflix.

A Beginner’s Guide to Website Design Language - Glossary & Basics

We’ve written about books , and we’ve written about podcasts , so it only makes sense that we take a look into movies for tour operators and tour guides. One thing that not many people know about the team at Tourism Tiger, is that we love to watch series and movies. Accordingly, it only makes sense that we put together a list of movies that feature tours and guides in a variety of formats.

When it comes to movies about travel, most people automatically think Eat, Pray, Love . But we’ve gone deeper finding takeaways from a variety of movies that focus on, or include a part specifically about tours. So sit back, relax and enjoy as you indulge in some…”business research”.

1- My Life in Ruins (2019)

A recently laid-off professor finds herself working as a tour guide. Having lost her passion for Greek history and culture, it negatively affects her disposition as well as her tours (opens in a new tab) . She comes to learn the importance of balancing the informative and the fun.

What we can learn from it:

Guides face a lot of pressure to be perfect at all times, and to continuously offer the perfect experience. But guides, like the people on their tours, are people after all. Being called boring is tough to hear , but as an operator if your guide possesses skill and potential, work with them so that they can offer an improved experience, which in turns benefits you. . Again, it’s important to read your group, they’re made up of a variety of personalities (opens in a new tab) , but people still go on a tour to have an enjoyable experience, otherwise they could simply read the guide book on their own.

2- The Breakup (2006)

Vince Vaughn’s character plays a tour bus operator/guide whose personal life takes a turn for the worse as he finds himself living with his recently broken up ex-girlfriend.

Let your guests know the experience they can expect from the very beginning, if your tours are all about having fun and a good laugh, then highlight this! The perfect tour maintains the right balance of fun and information no matter if you offer a walking tour or outdoor tour, people want to know your insights and experiences. Additionally, as challenging as it is, remember to maintain a work-life balance. A successful business requires a well-working and respectful relationship between guides, owners, and remember that bookkeeping is always important too. (opens in a new tab) Also, keep in mind the extra challenges that come from working with your family members.

3- Monte Carlo (2011)

A trio of young travellers (opens in a new tab) head to Paris for their vacation, only to be extremely disappointed by the misleading advertising and overall poor quality of the tour. Luckily for them what follows leads them on a whole other “on-in-the-movies-esque” adventure.

A tour can both make and break a vacation experience, so don’t let your tour be the reason someone looks back on their vacation with less than fond memories. Be sure to have a system in place to keep track of your guests throughout the tour, so as to not accidentally lose a guest or even worse, leave someone behind. While these travellers ended up having a whirlwind experience that made up for the initial mishaps, in the real (non-cinematic) world this would have been a much more dire situation on many levels.

4- Murder Mystery (2019)

While the majority of this movie centers around an all-too-real murder mystery, the reason why the principle characters find themselves in this predicament is that they are immediately turned off by the tour they booked. It goes to show how a poor tour experience can have a much larger impact (for better or worse as is the case in the film). Interesting to note that Jennifer Aniston made it into two movies on the list.

First impressions matter– a lot! Whether it’s your tour vehicle, the number of people,  or the general atmosphere you present — these factors will either secure your customers confidence in the experience they are about to have or create a sense of doubt and regret. Also, be sure to be as prepared as you can for the unpredictable including the proper type of insurance. (opens in a new tab) Lastly, be open to feedback throughout the tour process, including criticisms so that you can look to improve the remainder of the experience and apply any necessary changes for future tours.

5- Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (1985)

Arguably a cult-classic, this quirky and eccentric film follows the title character on his cross-country journey to recover his stolen bike. Notably along the way he makes a stop at the Alamo where he takes a tour, which although only accounts for just a few minutes of the film, it manages to provide many teachable moments.

Don’t force your guests to hold all of their questions to the end. While you can finish your point, allow multiple opportunities for questions, so that guests don’t forget their question or lose interest in asking while waiting. It’s also essential to read the crowd and adapt accordingly in order to ensure that guests are enjoying the experience throughout and to avoid the dreaded unexpected negative review. Additionally remember to be conscious and considerate when discussing other cultures and we definitely recommend that guides do not chew gum while giving a tour, as it’s both distracting and arguably unprofessional. Lastly, don’t laugh at guest questions, instead turn such a situation into a positive learning experience.

6- If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969)

A charming British tour guide takes a group of American tourists on a multi-day tour around Europe. Along the way there’s many sights to see, romance, complaints, and lots of laughs.

Tour guides wear many different hats during the tour process, and this is only amplified when it comes to multi-day tours (opens in a new tab) . Timeliness is crucial, there’s not much of a worst first impression you can make than showing up late for the tour. Consider the balance between showing travellers sites, but also allowing them the time to actually enjoy them rather than always feel rushed. Losing your guest is never acceptable, so in addition to regularly checking all attendees are present, have other fail-safe measures in place so that one doesn’t accidentally end up on the wrong bus in another country. When it comes to providing an authentic experience, give travellers an opportunity to taste local flavors. Be prepared for when disaster strikes such as your vehicle gets a flat tire (opens in a new tab) . Lastly, when it comes to debonair tour guides, always lead with professionalism.

7- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)  and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

(depending on if you prefer the classic or modern adaptation)

You may not have been expecting to see this one on the list, but as you’ll remember the whole tour centers around a guided tour by Willy Wonka himself of his infamous candy factory. Along the way there’s a tug of war because of the fantastical location and the arguably over-curious tour takers.

As an operator and a guide, you have every right to set your own rules and regulations when it comes to cancellation or rebooking fees, safety requirements or any other protocols during the actual tour. And for those who do not respect these points, there are consequences (reminding customers about the guidelines, directing them towards your terms & conditions or cancellation policy, and if necessary removing them from a tour. Similarly, as a guide, you’ll be faced with challenging customers (opens in a new tab) but it’s your responsibility to maintain control of the situation and not let one (or more) troublesome guests negatively affect the experience of your other guests. Best to avoid the specific tactics that the tour guests were exposed to in the film such as chocolate rivers.

8- The Cruise (1998)

This documentary will definitely not be to everyone’s taste, but it is certainly the top recommendation on this list. This philosophical existential take on being a guide in New York City is simply mesmerizing. Throughout the documentary, you’ll likely be left wondering if this is a genuine representation of Timothy or some sort of caricature. At a minimum you’ll be impressed by his grandiose monologues interweaving history, popular culture, and a banal interjection as they pass by a department store. What else could you possibly expect from a guide who sites Willy Wonka as one of his inspirations.

Guide personality matters, and people appreciate it. Guides should be their authentic selves no matter how quirky. But moreso, one should never underestimate the difference that passion can make when it comes to a memorable tour experience. A love for one’s destination is simply unrivalled.

Bonus: How to incorporate movie and TV fun into your tour offerings

People love movies and the magic that they encompass. No matter where in the world your tour is located, movie locations and filming locations make for a great tour stop or mention. Allow your guests the chance to snap a pic in the iconic spot and feel part of their favorite film or series. Otherwise, depending on your location, what about considering a movie and television theme tour as its own offering? New on Disney Plus in March 2024 — all the new movies and shows to watch

I t’s morbin’ time in March on Disney Plus, featuring the long-awaited debut of iconic superhero movie “Morbius” starring Jared Leto. Okay, maybe no one has really been hotly anticipating the Disney Plus premiere of “Morbius,” but it does give the service one more Marvel-based movie to join its extensive collection. Also filling in a gap on Disney Plus is 2015’s “Cinderella” from director Kenneth Branagh, one of the only live-action remakes of Disney animated classics that had yet to be available.

Actual new content on Disney Plus in March includes the latest episodes of the final season of “Star Wars” animated series “The Bad Batch,” and the documentary feature “Madu,” about a 12-year-old aspiring ballet dancer who leaves his home in Nigeria for an elite London ballet school. Taylor Swift and the X-Men lead this month’s new on Disney Plus highlights.

New on Disney Plus in March 2024: Top Picks

'taylor swift: the eras tour (taylor's version)'.

If you missed Taylor Swift in concert during her record-breaking Eras Tour, and you missed seeing “The Eras Tour” movie in theaters, and you didn’t rent the expanded version of “The Eras Tour” during its digital release, then holding off may have worked out for you, because Disney Plus has the most comprehensive version yet of Swift’s mega-successful concert documentary.

Of course, dedicated Swifties who did catch “The Eras Tour” in all its previous iterations will probably also want to watch it on Disney Plus, because it includes an expanded set list with the added songs from the on-demand rental version, plus the fan-favorite song “Cardigan” and four additional acoustic performances. It’s the closest that anyone will get to actually attending a Swift concert without being there in person.

Premieres March 15 on Disney Plus

‘X-Men ’97’

For a certain generation, “X-Men: The Animated Series,” which aired from 1992-1997 on Fox Kids, is the definitive vision of Marvel Comics’ mutant superhero team, and the show’s following has only grown more devoted in the 25-plus years since it ended. Now Marvel is reviving that series with a continuation that picks up exactly where the original left off. It’s the second project from Marvel Studios Animation, following the success of the Disney Plus series “What If …?”

Many of the original voice actors from “X-Men: The Animated Series” are returning for the revival, and the original show’s producers are consulting on the storylines. It promises a nostalgic experience for fans of the ’90s series, as well as a new angle on familiar characters for viewers who know the X-Men mainly from their more recent live-action movies.

Premieres March 20 on Disney Plus

'Renegade Nell'

A mix of period drama and fantasy adventure, this series from “Happy Valley” creator Sally Wainwright is very different from her work on that grim crime drama. It’s a rollicking caper starring Louisa Harland of “Derry Girls” as Nell Jackson, an outlaw highway robber in 18th-century England. She’s trying to clear her name after being framed for murder, and she receives some unexpected help from a tiny magical creature called Billy Blind (“Ted Lasso”’s Nick Mohammed).

So Nell becomes a superpowered vigilante of sorts, terrorizing the privileged upper class and working to prove her innocence. Thanks to Billy Blind, her personal quest leads her to an even larger purpose, thwarting a magical conspiracy that has its sights set on taking down the Queen of England herself.

Spaceman cast & character guide: who else stars in adam sandler's sci-fi movie.

The cast of Netflix's new sci-fi adventure movie Spaceman is small but features three leading actors who are sure to draw some substantial appeal.

  • New Netflix movie Spaceman stars Adam Sandler in a dramatic role on a solo space mission with an ancient arachnid encounter.
  • Spaceman had a limited theatrical release and debuted on Netflix, with a divided critical reception despite an early audience score.
  • The film also features acclaimed actors like Paul Dano and Carey Mulligan, showcasing Sandler's versatility in more serious roles.

The new Netflix movie Spaceman stars Adam Sandler but also features several other highly decorated actors. The latest Adam Sandler movie is quite a deviation from his previous straight-to-Netflix movies such as Murder Mystery (2019), Hustle (2022), and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023). Spaceman stars Sandler as Jakub Prochazka, an astronaut on a solo mission at the edge of the solar system who encounters an ancient arachnid creature in his ship. The new Netflix movie is based on the 2017 novel "Spaceman of Bohemia" by Jaroslav Kalfar.

Spaceman premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, 2024. It had a limited theatrical release on February 23, 2024, before it debuted on the streaming giant Netflix on March 1, 2024. Despite an early Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 84%, Spaceman's critical score on the site is at 60% with a Metacritic score of 57 as of the time of writing, indicating a divided critic pool . The film is considered a space sci-fi adventure movie despite Sandler's celebrated history as a comedic actor. Spaceman continues a trend of Sandler taking on more dramatic roles in recent years, most notably in the 2019 instant classic Uncut Gems.

Carey Mulligan as Lenka Procházka

Carey Mulligan and Adam Sandler stand intimately close together in Spaceman

Actor: Carey Mulligan, 38, is an Oscar-nominated actress from England. She appeared in two of the biggest films from 2023, Bradley Cooper's Maestro (for which she is nominated for a Best Actress Oscar) and Emerald Fennell's provocative film Saltburn . Check out our picks for the best new movies streaming in March 2024 below.

Spider-Verse box office

Netflix – March 1

Adam Sandler has made countless goofy comedies for Netflix. But this isn’t one of them. Instead, it’s an out-there sci-fi drama, which recently had a glitzy premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. “Spaceman” is an adaptation of Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 novel “Spaceman in Bohemia,” with Sandler starring as the titular explorer, sent to the edge of the galaxy on a mission of utmost importance. While he’s there, of course, he starts reflecting on his life and the choices he’s made, with the help of a creature from the beginning of time who is lurking on his ship and is voiced by Paul Dano. Is the creature in his mind or another traveler? The cast also includes recent Oscar hopeful Carey Mulligan, along with Lena Olin and Isabella Rossellini. The premise is cool and captivating, with “Chernobyl” filmmaker Johan Renck directing from a script by Colby Day. Dramatic Sandler might be our favorite Sandler. – Drew Taylor

“Step Brothers”

step-brothers-will-ferrell-john-c-reilly

One of the funniest movies of the 21st century so far, “Step Brothers” is juvenile and brilliant in equal measure. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly play two grown men still living with their single parents who are forced to live together as step brothers when their parents get married. What begins as a rivalry soon turns into camaraderie as these two struggle through arrested development. Kathryn Hahn, Adam Scott, Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins co-star. – Adam Chitwood

“The Green Knight”

The Green Knight - Dev Patel

Max – March 1

A wonderfully weird and wild fantasy tale, you’ll be amazed “The Green Knight” got made once the credits roll – until you see the A24 logo, that is. Of course A24 let “Pete’s Dragon” and “The Old Man and the Gun” filmmaker David Lowery go nuts with an adaptation of a 14th century poem. And of course the result is terrifying, mystifying and sexy all at once. Dev Patel plays Gawain, a man who sets out on a quest to face the Green Knight owing to a challenge set to him one year before. This film has mermaids, tree men and Sean Harris as King Arthur. Get thee to “The Green Knight!” – Adam Chitwood

“Dune: Part One”

Dune - Timothee Chalamet

Hulu – March 1

Before you sit down for “Dune: Part Two” in theaters, brush up by watching Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part One.” While the first film is streaming on Max, it also hits Hulu this month in case that’s your streamer of choice. And watching “Dune: Part One” is certainly a prerequisite for “Part Two” as the sequel is very much a continuation of one long story, and picks up right where the first film left off. Plus “Dune” is so pretty! The film won six Oscars, including Best Score and Best Cinematography. – Adam Chitwood

dune-part-2-timothee-chalamet

“Inside Llewyn Davis”

inside-llewyn-davis-oscar-isaac

Paramount+ – March 1

Some say “Inside Llewyn Davis” is the best Coen brothers film, which is high praise considering these guys are among the best American filmmakers in history. The 2013 film takes place in the 1960s New York folk music scene just before Bob Dylan’s arrival and follows Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac), a struggling performer just trying to make his way. It’s the story of the pursuit of artistic greatness in the face of constant failure, and what it takes to persist (or not). Isaac is spectacular, doing his own singing and guitar playing while also acting his heart out. And the songs are incredible. – Adam Chitwood

“Sleepy Hollow”

Christina Ricci in "Sleepy Hollow"

Make it Halloween in March with Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow,” one of the filmmaker’s very best films and a gothic delight. Written by Andrew Kevin Walker (“Seven”), this adaptation of the classic tale follows police constable Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) as he’s called to investigate a series of beheadings in Sleepy Hollow. The craft is immaculate and this R-rated feature is downright spooky. Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson and Michael Gambon co-star. – Adam Chitwood

“The Big Short”

the-big-short-steve-carell-ryan-gosling

“Anchorman” and “Step Brothers” filmmaker Adam McKay’s first foray into dramatic filmmaking won him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. 2015’s “The Big Short” is an enormously entertaining chronicle of the 2007-2008 financial crisis with a stacked cast that includes Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Brad Pitt. McKay finds unique ways to deliver complicated information, and the cast grounds the whole thing with performances that feel at once over-the-top and exactly right. This one will make you angry every time you watch it. – Adam Chitwood

“William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet”

william-shakespeare-romeo-and-juliet-leonardo-dicaprio-claire-danes

“Moulin Rogue!” and “The Great Gatsby” filmmaker Baz Luhrmann always has a flair for the theatrical, which made him a brilliant fit for 1996’s reimagining of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” Aptly named “Romeo + Juliet,” the film retains much of Shakespeare’s dialogue but features a contemporary setting and characters, trading swords for guns and Verona for “Verona Beach.” The freshly popular duo of Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes make a firecracker pairing at the center of the film, and a a hip soundtrack pairs nicely with Luhrmann’s fast-paced visual approach. – Adam Chitwood

baz-luhrmann-faraway-downs-digital-cover-featured

“Ricky Stanicky”

Zac Efron John Cena Ricky Stanicky

Prime Video – March 7

Peter Farrelly, one half of the Farrelly Brothers duo that gave us “Dumb and Dumber” and “There’s Something About Mary,” has spent the last few years making respectable tear-jerkers, including the Best Picture-winning “Green Book.” But now he’s returning to his goofy roots with “Ricky Stanicky,” a movie that has been around so long that it landed on the Black List of best unproduced screenplays back in 2010. Between then and now, a handful of prominent actors have been courted to play the character, a washed-up actor who agrees to play the role of Ricky Stanicky, a made-up person that a bunch of friends would use interchangeably to get out of something. Before John Cena, the character was nearly played by James Franco, Jim Carrey and – unbelievably – Joaquin Phoenix. Cena seems like the perfect lovable dolt, supported by Zac Efron (in his post-“Iron Claw” glow), Jermaine Fowler and William H. Macy. The poster proudly proclaims this an “R-rated comedy.” Make sure the little ones have left the room before spending time with “Ricky Stanicky.” – Drew Taylor

“Poor Things”

"Poor Things"

Hulu – March 7

If you haven’t seen “Poor Things,” currently nominated for a whopping 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, well, now is your chance. “The Favourite” team of director Yorgos Lanthimos, star Emma Stone and screenwriter Tony McNamara reconvene for this off-the-wall adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel. Willem Dafoe plays a Frankenstein-ian mad scientist who resurrects Stone’s suicidal waif, implanting the brain of her unborn child into her adult woman body. Somehow, from there, things get even weirder, as Stone’s Bella Baxter encounters weirdos while fully embracing all that this singularly surreal, steampunk-inspired world has to offer. With a starry supporting cast of movie stars playing a bunch of off-putting weirdos (Mark Ruffalo as a horny scoundrel is standout) and a unique style that combines silent movie aesthetics with progressive sexual politics, “Poor Things” is a strange brew but an intoxicating, utterly fulfilling one. At the very least try to squeeze this one in before the Oscars ceremony. You’ll want to have an opinion. – Drew Taylor

Kathryn Hunter in "Poor Things" (Searchlight Pictures)

Netflix – March 8

Ready for a fractured fairy tale? Millie Bobby Brown plays a young noblewoman who marries a handsome prince. But there’s a catch – she discovers that his family means to sacrifice her to a fearsome dragon in order to repay an ancient debt. But she’s no “Damsel.” Judging by the trailers, she not only survives, but she gets revenge on the kingdom in the most satisfying way possible. This new feminist fantasy epic boasts an impressive cast, which includes Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson and Shohreh Aghdashloo, with direction from Spanish filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (“28 Weeks Later”). Originally part of Netflix’s 2023 slate, it got bumped by the strikes and is now finally coming out, with the full promotional might of the streamer and its homegrown star Brown, who not only anchors “Stranger Things” but also two “Enola Holmes” movies. (She’ll also be in the upcoming sci-fi epic “The Electric State” from the Russos.) Truly, she is Netflix’s princess. Hopefully they don’t throw her to the dragon … or Demogorgon. – Drew Taylor

wonka-timothee-chalamet

Max – March 8

One of the year’s biggest surprises was “Wonka,” Paul King’s ingenious musical origin story for the famous chocolatier (brightly played here by Timothée Chalamet) in the time before his magical factory. Wisely acknowledging the versions of the Roald Dahl story that came before it (particularly the Gene Wilder-led “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”) without ever becoming to reverential, “Wonka” traces the character in his early days, as he fights against the systemic oppression of the chocolate consortium and other factors conspiring to snuff out his dream. Of course, this being Willy Wonka, his enthusiasm remains. And this being Paul King, his plan to make a splash in the chocolate world is carried out through a series of inventive, almost clockwork-like set pieces. (The songs are pretty good too.) And if you’re worried about overloading on sugar, King also maintains the weird flintiness of Roald’s original story; it’s spiky sometimes when you’re expecting it to be smooth. The fact that King, Chalamet and the rest of the team created a new story worthy of Roald’s delectable original is maybe their greatest accomplishment. Best enjoyed with a frosty glass of milk. – Drew Taylor

“A Star Is Born” (2018)

If you’re in a musical mood but are in the market for a combo of great songs and great drama, Bradley Cooper’s phenomenal 2018 version of “A Star Is Born” will do the trick. Cooper co-wrote, directed and stars in the film as an alcoholic musician on the decline who discovers a star in the making, played by Lady Gaga. As her career takes off he guides her – both as a mentor and a romantic partner – but the question becomes whether he himself can survive the journey. Cooper and Gaga turn in spectacular performances, the original songs are genuinely great, and Cooper proves he’s an incredible filmmaker as he captures it all with an intimate gaze. – Adam Chitwood

“Sleeping With Other People”

Alison Brie smiles at Jason Sudeikis in "Sleeping With Other People"

Paramount+ – March 8

“Sleeping With Other People” writer-director Leslye Headland described her approach to this 2015 rom-com as “like ‘When Harry Met Sally’ with assholes.” The film begins in 2002 with Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis as college students who lose their virginity to each other. They never strike up a relationship, but the film charts their yearslong friendship as they’re each in different relationships but maybe kinda-sorta are into one another – but will they ever admit it? This one has the R-rated raunch of “Bridesmaids” and a biting wit, with a supporting cast that includes Adam Scott, Jason Mantzoukas, Natasha Lyonne, Amanda Peet, Adam Brody and Billy Eichner. – Adam Chitwood

“Trolls Band Together”

Peacock – March 14

“Trolls Band Together” asks the question that has been dogging the franchise since the very earliest days: does Branch (Justin Timberlake) have a family? In this, the third film in the series, we get the answer and it’s an emphatic yes – he’s got a whole gang of brothers (voiced by Eric André, Daveed Diggs, Kid Cudi and Troye Sivan). And what’s more, he and his brothers used to sing in a boy band together called Bro Zone. But when the brothers start getting captured by evil, talentless hacks (Amy Schumer and Andrew Rannells), it’s up to Branch and the gang to rescue them. “Trolls Band Together” amplifies earlier installments’ arts-and-crafts aesthetic to an almost absurd degree (our favorite is Vacation Island, a Yacht Rock-inspired land where everything is made of pool floaties) while upping the familial dynamics that have always been a key part of the series’ appeal. With gentle sweeps of surrealism and an honest-to-God *NSYNC reunion, “Trolls Band Together” is a joyful romp that the whole family can get behind. – Drew Taylor

“Dream Scenario”

Dream Scenario

Max – March 15

Who among us hasn’t dreamt of Nicolas Cage? That is the question at the heart of A24’s “Dream Scenario,” a darkly comedic drama about a mild-mannered college professor (Cage) who starts showing up in the dreams of strangers. But what starts out innocently enough (an ad agency contacts him about selling Sprite), the phenomenon soon turns quite sinister. Writer/director Kristoffer Borgli, working with producer Ari Aster (“Hereditary,” “Beau is Afraid”), incorporates a number of big ideas about cancel culture and the meme-ification of modern society, into a unique, propulsive film that features one of Cage’s all-time best performances. Leave it to a man both as fearless and as self-aware as Cage to give the character depth, complexity and tenderness. The final moments of the film are among last year’s most heartbreaking – and most unforgettable. – Drew Taylor

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)”

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour

Disney+ – March 15

Are you ready for it? The highest-grossing concert film of all time finally comes to streaming as “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” finds its home on Disney+. As is usually the case with bespoke TS releases, the streaming version of the concert film includes extra goodies: The performance of “Cardigan” which was not in the theatrical or digital release, but four additional songs that weren’t featured in those releases either. What they are is a secret for now but fingers crossed for “Exile.” In the meantime, whether you’re reliving the live experience or checking out “The Eras Tour” for the first time, it’s no understatement to say this is a historical event. – Adam Chitwood

“Irish Wish”

"Irish Wish" starring Lindsay Lohan, coming to Netflix

Netflix – March 15

Did somebody order a St. Patrick’s Day-themed romantic comedy starring Lindsey Lohan? That would be Netflix’s “Irish Wish,” which follows a woman who begrudgingly agrees to be the bridesmaid while her best friend marries the man she loves. But at the destination wedding in Ireland, a wish for true love finds Lohan’s character waking up as the bride-to-be. Ed Speelers and Alexander Vlahos co-star in this love triangle rom-com with an Irish twist. – Adam Chitwood

“Road House”

Road House

Prime Video – March 21

Who knew that a glossy “Road House” remake would be this controversial? The new movie, which sees Jake Gyllenhaal fill in for Patrick Swayze as a former UFC fighter turned “cooler” at a dingy roadside bar in Florida, has besieged by scandal – between producer Joel Silver getting removed from the project, to director Doug Liman publicly distancing himself from the movie as a protest for Amazon’s lack of theatrical exhibition, to a recent lawsuit claiming that the movie utilized AI voice reproduction during the writers’ strike as a way of skirting copyright expiration. Honestly, none of this really matters, considering how cool the first trailer was, how tantalizing the supporting cast is (including Jessica Williams, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen and Conor McGregor) and how well-regarded the original movie has become over the years. We cannot wait to visit “Road House,” controversy be damned. – Drew Taylor

Netflix – March 22

Powerhouse Regina King stars as political icon Shirley Chisholm in this Netflix biopic, aptly named “Shirley.” The film chronicles the story of the first Black woman elected to Congress and her trailblazing 1972 presidential campaign. Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” co-writer John Ridley wrote and directed the film, which also stars Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Christina Jackson, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Terrence Howard. – Adam Chitwood

“Anatomy of a Fall”

Sandra Huller in Anatomy of a Fall

Hulu – March 22

The Oscar-nominated French legal drama “Anatomy of a Fall” comes to Hulu this month, and it’s a great chance to catch up on one of the most talked-about films of 2023. Sandra Hüller stars as a writer who is questioned after the death of her husband, who either fell or was pushed from the window of their house. Personal details come to light through the course of the trial, and their visually impaired son (and his adorable guide dog) is caught in the middle. Is she guilty or innocent? That’s certainly the question on everyone’s mind through the course of the film, but what makes co-writer/director Justine Triet’s film so engrossing is what it says about our obligation to the truth in relationships. It’s nominated for five Oscars including Best Actress and Best Picture. – Adam Chitwood

“Charlie’s Angels” (2019)

Hulu – March 25

First thing’s first: Elizabeth Banks’ 2019 update of “Charlie’s Angels” isn’t as stylish as the Cameron Diaz/Drew Barrymore/Lucy Liu original. But if you’re curious, it’s well worth a watch — largely for Kristen Stewart’s flirtatious and extremely funny performance as one third of the spy trio. It’s pretty fun! Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska, Noah Centineo and Patrick Stewart also star. – Adam Chitwood

“Kill Bill” Vol. 1 and 2

Uma Thurman as Beatrix Kiddo in “Kill Bill” (Photo Credit: Miramax Films)

Netflix – March 31

When Quentin Tarantino was filming “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” his code name for it was “Magnum Opus.” And while the scope and sprawl of that alternate history yarn is impressive, it’s hard not to think of “Kill Bill,” the two-part extravaganza, as being his true epic. Uma Thurman, who had collaborated with Tarantino on “Pulp Fiction,” plays The Bride, an assassin left for dead by her double-crossing partners in the Deadly Viper assassination squad. When she comes to she goes on a roaring rampage of revenge, tracking down each of her former colleagues until she goes for the man who had brought them all together – Bill (David Carradine). The first film is pure fun, as the Bride travels to Japan to track down an old foe. Tarantino stages one of the greatest fight scenes of all time – the assault on the House of Blue Leaves – and also throws in flourishes like a gnarly assault in a suburban home and a blood-soaked anime interlude. The second film is the “western” to the first film’s “eastern,” as she tracks down several of her old teammates, gets buried alive and finally has a face-to-face with Bill. Two falters somewhat on some of the big moments, but it’s also a hugely satisfying and features some of the best performances of Thurman and Carradine’s careers, respectfully. Order a pizza. Grab a six pack (of Coke or beer). And have the time of your life watching these two bruisers back-to-back. Talk about a magnum opus. – Drew Taylor

Breaking Down All of Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Surprise Song Mash-Ups and What They Could Mean

Breaking Down All of Taylor Swifts Eras Tour Surprise Song Mash Ups and What They Could Mean

Some Swifties have been luckier than others when it comes to the surprise songs set of Taylor Swift ’s The Eras Tour .

Since launching her record-breaking tour in March 2023, Swift has used the penultimate section of her show to perform songs across her entire discography that aren’t included in the concert’s expansive setlist. On occasion, however, Swift has used the portion of the show to debut special mash-ups of her most famous tracks.

Swift began the trend during a November 2023 show in Buenos Aires, combining “Is It Over Now?” and “Out of the Woods” from 1989 (Taylor’s Version) . That same month, Swift revealed that she would be breaking her own surprise songs rule of only performing a track once for more of her international Eras Tour dates.

“I decided that in 2024, when we go back on tour, I’m just gonna open back up all the songs for surprise songs,” she told fans during a show in São Paulo, Brazil, noting that her entire discography was “fair game.”

‘Is It Over Now?’ and ‘Out of the Woods’

One month after 1989 (TV) ’s October 2023 release, Swift surprised Argentina fans with a mash-up of songs from the album. Swifties immediately made a connection between the two tracks as both are rumored to be about the pop star’s ex Harry Styles .

The vault track “Is it Over Now?” features the lyrics, “When you lost control / red blood, white snow.” The exes, who were romantically linked from late 2012 to early 2013, famously got into a snowmobile accident in 2012, after which Styles was photographed with a bandage on his chin.

In the song, Swift also sings about sitting in a “blue dress on a boat,” a nod to being photographed in a blue dress while on a boat not long after her and Styles’ split.

“Out of the Woods,” is also speculated to be about Styles and Swift’s snowmobile incident, featuring lyrics such as, “Remember when you hit the brakes too soon? / Twenty stitches in the hospital room.” The song’s lyrics also make reference to the paper airplane necklaces they were each seen wearing during their brief romance.

‘Getaway Car’ / ‘August’ / ‘The Other Side of the Door’

After beginning to play Reputation ’s “Getaway Car” on guitar during a February 2024 concert in Melbourne, Australia, Swift surprised fans by transitioning the tune into “August” from Folklore , which is included in the tour’s main setlist. She rounded out the acoustic performance by adding “The Other Side of the Door” from Fearless (Taylor’s Version) .

“I want to play one that you really want to hear, I want you to be happy,” she told the crowd, per social media footage from the show.

Fans once again were quick to notice a connection between the songs as all three discuss infidelity. The lyrics to “Getaway Car” compare being stuck in a romantic situation with three people to being a “sideshow,” while “The Other Side of the Door” asks the question if the other woman in a relationship was “worth the mess” it caused.

“August,” meanwhile, is one of three Folklore songs that tells the story of a love triangle, including “Cardigan” and “Betty.” The track follows the story from the perspective of a girl named August, with whom a boy named James cheated on his girlfriend Betty.

‘come back … be here’ and ‘daylight’.

For her third Eras Tour concert in Me l bourne , Swift grabbed her guitar to sing a mash-up of “Come Back … Be Here” from Red (Taylor’s Version) and “Daylight” from Lover . While “Come Back … Be Here” tells the story of a person hoping to rekindle a broken romance, “Daylight” sees Swift discuss leaving behind the mess of past relationships after seemingly finding her perfect partner.

“And I can still see it all (in my mind) / All of you, all of my (intertwined) / I once believed love would be (black and White) / But it’s golden (golden),” Swift sings in “Daylight.”

It was during her third Melbourne show that Swift revealed she might repeat surprise songs throughout the remainder of the tour. “I want to be as creative as possible with the acoustic set moving forward, and I don’t want to limit anything or say, ‘Oh, if I played this song, I can’t play it again,’” she told fans, per social media footage . “So, from now on, I don’t want to take any paint colors out of the paintbox [or] tools out of the toolbox.”

‘White Horse’ and ‘Coney Island’

Swift continued her leg of Australia Eras Tour shows in Sydney. During her first night in the city, Swift brought out her opening act, Sabrina Carpenter , to sing a mash-up of “White Horse” from Fearless (TV) and “Coney Island” from Evermore after Carpenter’s performance was canceled due to poor weather.

The lyrics to both songs follow the endings of relationships after the people involved realize their romantic connection was not how they thought it would be or not how it once was.

‘should’ve said no’ and ‘you’re not sorry’ / ‘peace’ and ‘new year’s day’.

Swift performed her first set of double secret song mash-ups during her second Sydney Eras Tour show in February 2024. She began by combining “Should’ve Said No” from her self-titled debut album, Taylor Swift , and “You’re Not Sorry” from Fearless (TV) on the guitar. Both of the breakup tracks discuss relationships in which one partner was not faithful.

Swift followed up the mash-up by performing Folklore ’s “Peace” with Reputation ’s “New Year’s Day,” both of which see the singer analyze her romances. While “Peace” sees Swift question whether her fame is keeping her from maintaining “peace” in a relationship, Swift asks her partner to “please don’t ever become a stranger whose laugh I could recognize anywhere” in “New Year’s Day.”

‘Is It Over Now?’ and ‘I Wish You Would’ / ‘Haunted’ and ‘Exile’

Swift performed another mash-up of 1989 (TV) tunes , “Is It Over Now?” and “I Wish You Would,” as her guitar surprise song during Sydney Night 3 . The concert marked the second time Swift used “Is It Over Now?” in a mash-up with another track rumored to be about Styles, having previously done so in Buenos Aires in November 2023.

After performing the upbeat songs on her guitar, Swift headed over the piano to sing a mash-up of “Haunted” from Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and “Exile” from Folklore . On theme with many of Swift’s surprise song mash-ups, both breakup tracks tell the story of realizing a relationship was not what it seemed on the surface.

‘Forever & Always’ and ‘Maroon’ / ‘Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve’ and ‘Ivy’

For her final night in Sydney, Swift hit fans with two more secret song mash-ups featuring some of her biggest tracks. On piano, Swift performed Fearless (TV) ’s “Forever & Always” with Midnight ’s “Maroon.” For the guitar secret song, she combined Midnight ’s “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” with Evermore ’s “Ivy.”

The performances seemingly dispelled the theory that Swift performs her most emotional tracks while wearing her yellow surprise songs dress . Swift instead sported the green version of the dress, which she has also worn in maroon and blue, for Sydney Night 4.

Swift’s official fan account, Taylor Nation, seemingly confirmed there’s no correlation between her surprise songs dress color and the tracks she performs. “#SydneyTSTheErasTour, the past four nights with you have kept us on the edge of our seats! Thanks for bringing *the chant* back and crying with us during the mashups!” they tweeted after the show, adding, “We fear all the dresses now … 🫣.”

‘Mine’ and ‘Starlight’

Swift performed a mash-up of “Mine” and “Starlight,” from Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) , respectively, during her March 2, 2024, concert in Singapore.

“This has become my favorite part of the show because it’s become very chaotic and it’s become a challenge for me to think of new things to do for every single city,” she said in her introduction . “And hope that I’m doing something that you guys might like. It’s been a blast!”

‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’ and ‘Dress’

Swift’s second acoustic number on March 2 mashed up “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” her 50 Shades Darker duet with Zayn Malik , and “Dress” from Reputation .

Swift’s official Instagram went live to share the performance with her followers, many of whom think it is a clue for the arrival of Reputation (Taylor’s Version) . Certain Swifties even pointed out that “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” came out in December, the 12th month of the year, and “Dress” is the 12th song on Reputation ’s OG tracklist.

‘Long Story Short’ and ‘The Story of Us’

Swift kicked off her March 3, 2024, acoustic set in Singapore with Evermore ’s “Long Story Short” on guitar. Her number evolved into a mash-up with “The Story of Us” from Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).

‘Clean’ and ‘Evermore’

Swift’s second surprise song on March 3 combined the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) track “Clean” with Evermore from her 2020 album of the same name. The piano mash-up occurred moments after Swift announced the “final edition” of The Tortured Poets Department , which is called “The Black Dog.”

“[These are] two songs about healing from a sky that ‘turned black like a perfect storm’ and a ‘gray November,’” one X user pointed out about the song choices, quoting the respective lyrics. “This album is about heartbreak, but also about healing.”

Some urban lit authors see fiction in the Oscar-nominated ‘American Fiction’

The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Omar Tyree, author of such urban lit narratives as “Flyy Girl” and “The Last Street Novel,” recently went to see the Oscar-nominated movie “American Fiction.”

“I loved the emotions of the family,” Tyree said of the comic drama starring best actor nominee Jeffrey Wright as the struggling author-academic Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, Leslie Uggams as his ailing mother and supporting actor nominee Sterling K. Brown as his troubled and unpredictable brother. “I love seeing how Monk tries to bring the family unit together and just seeing Black people trying to work things out.”

But when asked about the film’s featured storyline — Monk finds unexpected success when he publishes a crude novel under the assumed identity of ex-con Stagg R. Leigh — Tyree laughed and gave a nod to “creative license.”

“The whole idea that he’s going to sell a lot of books by keeping it raw, in real life it doesn’t work life that,” he said. “That kind of book would have been stronger in the early 2000s.”

“American Fiction,” nominated for a best picture Academy Award and in four other categories, was adapted from Percival Everett’s “Erasure,” a 2001 novel that came out when a genre alternately called “urban lit,” “urban fiction,” “street lit” or “hip-hop fiction” was peaking, especially among young Black readers. Novels like Sister Souljah’s “The Coldest Winter Ever,” Shannon Holmes’ “B-More Careful” and Teri Woods’ “True to the Game” were selling hundreds of thousands of copies while major publishers, who had initially ignored the genre, were offering large advances in search of the next hit.

The urban lit genre dates back at least to 1967, and the release of the memoir “Pimp,” written by Robert Maupin, who was in jail when he began writing under the name Iceberg Slim and built a large word-of-mouth following. He inspired another street lit pioneer, Donald Goines, author of the Kenyatta urban crime series and other works from the 1970s that influenced such hip-hop stars as Tupac Shakur, who would famously declare, “Machiavelli was my tutor, Donald Goines my father figure.”

Urban lit is still around, but no new releases approach the heights of 20 years ago. According to Circana, which tracks around 85% of the print retail market, the genre sold around 380,000 copies in 2023, far less than the total sales for “The Coldest Winter Ever.” Many leading urban lit authors these days are either independently published — among them Black Lavish and Mz. Lady P — or released through Kensington Publishing Corp., which still has cut back over the past decade.

“At one point, the majority of the books on our list that were written by Black authors would have been categorized as urban or street lit,” says Vida Engstrand, Kensington’s director of communications. Because of changes in the “retail landscape and reader interest,” Kensington now offers a much broader selection, with “very few front list titles that fall squarely in the category of urban lit,” she says.

Everett, an award-winning author whose novels include “The Trees” and the upcoming “James,” was unavailable for comment, his publisher said.

Monk is inspired to write his pseudonymous book after looking through a bestseller titled “We’s Lives In Da Ghetto” and reading such sentences as “Momma says I be the ’sponsible one and tell me that I gots to hold thing togever while she at work clean dem white people’s house.” After failing to catch on as a literary author, he is offered a six-figure book deal and seven-figure movie deal for his profanely titled novel.

Stagg R. Leigh is praised by critics and even wins a prestigious literary prize. But few were calling Teri Woods or Shannon Holmes likely Pulitzer winners. The publishing community debated whether urban lit should be condemned for reinforcing stereotypes about Black life — stereotypes parodied by Everett in his novel — or welcomed for its blunt portraits of crime and poverty and for attracting new audiences.

“I’ve heard a lot of people within the Black community who have that viewpoint, that urban lit doesn’t reflect all of us,” says author Porscha Sterling. “And while it’s important to show the Black community in multiple ways, I do think it’s important to have a well-rounded view that includes everyone.”

“In my opinion, it was wrong to characterize these books as different from other Black literature,” says Malaika Adero, an author, agent and executive editor for AUWA, a Macmillan imprint led by Questlove. “We’ve had all kinds of classic books that dealt with the underground economy and the ghetto and weren’t classified as hip-hop lit.”

Monk’s novel has some parallels to a bestseller from the 1990s, Sapphire’s “Push,” an acclaimed and controversial novel about a pregnant teen from Harlem that begins in broken English, but becomes more traditional as the girl learns to read and write. At the time, Sapphire (a pen name for Ramona Lofton) was a little-known poet who received a large advance and attracted the interest of Hollywood. The book became the Oscar-winning movie “Precious.”

“American Fiction” director Cord Jefferson, nominated for best adapted screenplay, has said that reading “Erasure” reminded him of conversations he had with friends over the years.

“Why are we always writing about misery and trauma and violence and pain inflicted on Blacks? Why is this what people expect from us? Why is this the only thing we have to offer to culture?” Jefferson often wondered, he told The Associated Press last fall.

One urban lit author, Saundra, said she found “American Fiction” funny, but “a tad bit overdramatized,” adding she doubted a novel like the one Monk wrote would be so welcomed now. Sterling, whose novels include the series “Gangland” and “Bad Boys Do It Better,” said she identified with Monk’s frustration at not being understood and recognized, but also said the satire in “American Fiction” left her feeling “misunderstood”

“I don’t know any people who write like that in the urban lit genre,” she said.

Author K’Wan Foye, known as K’Wan, says he related well to the movie, even if it was “poking fun” at urban lit. He remembers being encouraged 20 years ago to write “something really ghetto,” what became his popular “Hood Rat” series, and showing up for a meeting at St. Martin’s Press wearing a Biggie Smalls-style suit.

“They thought it was some kind of persona, the way Stagg R. Leigh is in the movie,” K’Wan said. “And I was like, ‘No, this is who I am.’”

If “Erasure” had been published now, the protagonist would likely have chosen a different kind of book to parody the commercial market, authors and publishers say. Tyree thinks he would have been writing nonfiction, maybe working on a celebrity confessional like Jada Pinkett Smith’s “Worthy.” Shawanda Williams, who oversees the Black Odyssey imprint of Kensington, cites the 2022 bestseller “The Other Black Girl,” the surreal tale of a Black editorial assistant at a publishing house.

Saundra, whose novels include “Hustler’s Queen” and “It Ain’t About the Revenge,” says the urban lit market has faded enough that she’s trying a different kind of book. In 2025, Kensington will publish “The Treacherous Wife,” which she calls “domestic suspense.”

“Times are changing,” she says, “and I think readers are looking for suspense, something everyone can relate to.”

An Arms Race Quietly Unfolds in Space

After warnings that russia could put a nuclear weapon into orbit, the u.s. is ramping up its space effort..

This transcript was created using speech recognition software. While it has been reviewed by human transcribers, it may contain errors. Please review the episode audio before quoting from this transcript and email [email protected] with any questions. An earlier version of this transcript misidentified the speaker reading portions of Representative Mike Turner’s letter warning of a national security threat. It was the voice of reporter Andrew Craft of Fox News, not Mr. Turner himself.

From “New York Times,” I’m Michael Barbaro. This is “The Daily.”

[THEME MUSIC]

Today, US officials now acknowledge a growing fear that Russia may be trying to put a nuclear weapon into Earth’s orbit. But, as my colleague, Eric Lipton, explains, their real worry is that America could lose the battle for military supremacy in space.

It’s Wednesday, February 28.

Eric, this story began in a pretty unusual way. I actually watched it unfold on social media in real time, and it started with a very cryptic message from a member of Congress. So just tell us about that.

Sure. Well, Representative Mike Turner, who’s chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, put out a message, saying —

Today, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has made available to all members of Congress information —

— that he had information, concerning a serious national security threat. And it was an unusual kind of a statement from the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

I’m requesting that President Biden declassify all information relating to this threat so that Congress, the administration —

And so he didn’t really tell us what this was about, but he —

He told us to be very scared.

Yes. And it immediately set off a scramble of national security reporters to try to figure out what that message meant. And pretty quickly —

Congressman Turner is referring to a foreign military capability, and that foreign military is the Russian military.

Reporters heard that this had to do with Russia and with a new type of military threat.

And what exactly was this new kind of military threat?

The intelligence that our “New York Times” colleagues have collected is that Russia is preparing to put a weapon in space that would blow up a nuclear device. And when it did that, it would be used to target United States surveillance satellites.

OK. So here, we need to slow down and explain what that means, why it’s so alarming, why nukes would ever be in space. So disentangle all of that.

I think that few Americans realize just how vital space is to the military defense of the United States. For decades, the United States has been building effectively school bus-sized satellites that cost a massive amounts of money. They’re these exquisite systems that just sit there in space and provide incredible information. And we rely upon all of the assets that we have for navigation, for communication, for missile defense, for missile targeting. And it’s something that is one of the great powers that the United States is to have all of this equipment floating around above us. But the real flaw in the United States military space system is that there aren’t very many of them, and you don’t have to take out too many of them to severely disable the United States’ capacities.

Got it. So back to this congressman, Turner, and his message, why would the Russians need a nuclear element to their efforts to challenge America’s satellite programs in space?

Russia sees potentially a nuclear weapon as a way to take out large numbers of satellites in an instant.

It would fry them. It would destroy them. It would create all kinds of debris in space. And I think what’s really going on here is the Russians in the early stages of their invasion of Ukraine were really frustrated that they were not able to really block the ability of the Ukrainian military to continue to communicate. And that’s because the Ukrainian military was relying on SpaceX, and Elon Musk, and his network of Starlink satellites to continue to operate. And it was actually in late 2022 when the Russians said, you know what? Those American satellites are getting in our way, and we may choose to target those satellites in the future. And I think that’s what might be going on right now.

Got it. So Russia has decided that a way for it to achieve any kind of military advantage over the US and have success in things like its invasion of Ukraine is to be able to threaten the United States’ satellite infrastructure in space in such a way that might make it hard for the US to effectively fight back against Russia.

That’s right. On the ground, Russia’s been using what they call GPS jammers to disrupt the signals from satellites that are coming down in Ukraine on the ground, as they’re fighting the war. But everything from the location of the soldier on the ground, to when there’s a missile that’s launched that’s targeting the United States, to how a ship communicates with another ship, everything goes through space. And I think that’s one of the weakest points that the United States has, and it’s the ability to mess up or disable their space-based communications, targeting surveillance.

You’re saying that, when a rival like Russia thinks about how it could actually and efficiently take out America’s eyes and ears of our entire military, it turns out there’s really only one answer, and that’s by doing it in space.

Right. It doesn’t matter how big and powerful the weapon systems are. If they can’t target and they can’t communicate, they’re basically useless.

OK. So if you believe that Russia could put a nuclear weapon in space that could hurt our ability to have eyes and ears on what they’re doing, that would be very scary. But how confident are we that Vladimir Putin can in fact put a nuclear weapon in space that’s capable of doing that?

Given that in fact there’s already been nuclear tests in space in the 1960s, the idea of them doing this is not out of the realm of technical possibilities. It would be a violation of an international treaty, but Russia hasn’t shown much concern about violating international treaties. So I don’t think technically it would be that much of a challenge. It would destabilize the world because suddenly you’d have nuclear weapons in space. And it would cross a line that so far, no one has crossed. But the notion, can it be done? I think it could be done.

And I guess the question is not just, can it be done, but how confident is the US that Russia intends to do it and how quickly?

That’s really unclear, and I think that there’s a lot of speculation even about exactly what this weapon might be. It could be a nuclear-powered anti-satellite device that blows out satellites but just the nuclear-powered. It could be a nuclear weapon in space that explodes and blows out anything anywhere nearby. And we don’t know when this potential Russian weapon is going to go up into orbit or whether or not in fact it ever really will.

But what this does show a bit is that it’s a bit of a Hail Mary by Russia, a way to try to exert its influence in space at a moment when Russia is actually a declining power relative to the other nations in the world.

Just explain that. How can Russia be a declining power right now in space?

Russia is not launching nearly as frequently as it had been, and its whole infrastructure around building new satellites is in decline, particularly compared to China, which is launching at a crazy pace right now and putting up all kinds of new commercial communication systems but also devices that could become offensive weapons against the United States. So at the end of the day, when I talk to people at the Pentagon, despite the noise that Russia is making about potentially putting a nuclear weapon in space, the biggest threat to the United States in space is actually China.

We’ll be right back.

So, Eric, we started off talking about the threat that it seemed Russia posed to the United States because of its willingness to potentially put a nuclear weapon in space. Now you’re saying that for the US military, the real threat in space is China. So just explain that.

China, as of at least the last decade, as part of a overall significant surge in its military capacity, space has been an incredibly intense focus. It has been launching at a really rapid pace, far ahead of Russia. And it’s not only putting communications satellites up there, but it’s putting systems that could potentially grab onto, move, and disable American military satellites.

Well, how does that work? How does something that they launch into space grab onto an American satellite?

Well, in January of 2022, China put a satellite into space that had an arm that reached out and grabbed another satellite that was there in geosynchronous orbit.

And it dragged it to a different location.

So basically, they found a way to put a tow truck up in space and showed that if they wanted to, they could move any satellite.

That’s right. They showed that they had the ability to not only send satellites up there but to send trucks that had the capacity to grab onto maybe an enemy’s surveillance system and basically put it into a dead zone. Another thing that China did was in 2007 — this is quite a while ago — they launched a missile up to about 530 miles, which is far into space. And they destroyed another satellite that was in orbit, and it created an incredible cloud of space debris, the largest amount of space debris ever tracked. And it was quite a worrisome thing for the United States to see that China has the capacity to launch missiles from the ground that would destroy satellites and blow them up in low Earth orbit.

Got it. So both examples that you just described are much more targeted than what Russia is contemplating, moving one satellite or using a missile to take one out. But the upshot is that China can disrupt our eyes and ears in space in a probably better, more efficient way than Russia. And you’re saying given how much stuff they’ve put up in space, they’re more likely to already be able to do it than Russia, which is still trying to get to that point.

Right. The big difference between Russia and China right now, as a space threat, is that China is moving rapidly on both offensive and defensive systems. China’s talking about building a state network of 13,000 satellites on a scale that’s completely outside of what Russia is attempting to do. China is investing a lot more money and it’s moving much faster right now to put new systems in space. And those systems are both going to threaten United States’ satellites and also have kind of a surveillance that would almost rival the United States.

So I want to understand where the US sits in all of this because when it comes to space, it feels like the thing that would make the US military so anxious about a rival’s advancements in space is if we couldn’t match them, or we couldn’t properly respond to them. So what is the US readiness right now to basically match or fight back against whatever Russia and China are doing in space?

Everyone I talk to from the Pentagon and also former Pentagon officials all agree that the United States maintains clear dominance in space. It has more satellites for surveillance, and missile targeting, and missile defense than any other nation. Both the United States and China have moved in a really rapid way into a new domain, and that is low Earth orbit. That’s about no greater than 1,200 miles off the surface of the Earth, and it’s the area where SpaceX has put more than 5,000 satellites for its Starlink system. That’s the focus right now is to flood that zone with lots of relatively-cheap, quickly-manufactured, easy-to-replace satellite systems. And the United States wants to put at least a thousand satellites into low Earth orbit for its military purposes in the next several years.

Among the many concerns that the American military has is that China is moving so rapidly right now to build out its own system that unless the United States really accelerates what it’s doing that soon China could be close to matching what the US has in space and that China now has enough surveillance capacity in space to target American military capacity in any type of a conflict. Imagine the scenario where China decides to invade Taiwan, and the United States decides that it’s going to help defend Taiwan. If all of our military assets are immediately visible to China, they could be targeted even before they got to the Taiwan Straits or even before they got within range to have a military engagement. And simultaneously, China’s offensive space weapons were disabling American satellites so that the United States could no longer communicate. That’s the fear that the military has right now is both of those things could suddenly happen if the United States is not building up its own space capacity and its space weapons to disable Chinese satellites.

Got it. So the worry — and it’s very specific — is that if China can achieve the same level of military prowess in space as the US, then the US loses any power it has to deter China from doing something like invade Taiwan because we know and they know that we know that they can basically shut down our systems before and during that invasion and make it impossible for us to stop them.

It would severely degrade military capacity if they could wipe out a good share of our satellites, and they’re racing to try to avoid that.

So, Eric, what does it look like for the US to race to avoid China meeting America’s capabilities where they currently are? How does the US military do that? Obviously, it would need to either slow China down, or the US itself would need to speed up and race ahead of China.

There’s two primary things that are happening right now. One is to build out US offensive systems to disable Chinese or Russian satellites. So that includes jamming systems — they just signed a new contract to build new devices that could jam Chinese or Russian satellites and disrupt their signals — laser systems that could destroy satellites from the ground or from space, and also other systems that they — just like the Chinese have built a tug in space, the United States potentially is going to build its own systems that could grab and disable other satellites in space.

The second piece of this plank is to build out a massive investment in space capacity by the United States, to build a whole new architecture in low Earth orbit, with hundreds, if not more than a thousand satellites that would be so many, so redundant that you couldn’t effectively disable the United States’ military capacity because even if you were to shoot out a certain number of them, there would be yet more of them, sort of like Starlink right now, the SpaceX Starlink. If it loses a certain number of its 5,800 satellites, they just switch, and they rebuild the network among the remaining satellites. Basically, everyone knows that the next time there’s a major war, with a major power, that there’s going to be offensive activity in space, and both sides are preparing for that.

Wow. What you’re clearly describing is a new space race, a space race that’s about which of these three global superpowers can take out the other’s satellites and use their satellites offensively and defensively to achieve military supremacy.

Yeah, that’s right. I think that there’s a new space race that’s underway right now, and it is more intense than at any time since really the 1960s, when the United States and Russia were testing weapons in space for the first time. And it is very intense, and the increase in spending on space right now radically exceeds anything that the Navy, or the traditional Air Force, or the Army is doing. More dollars are pouring into space defense right now as a percentage increase. It’s more than any other part of the military.

Eric, this makes me wonder, how much the US, in its efforts to do those two things you just described out in space, is ultimately reliant on contractors, the private sector, and in particular Elon Musk, right, this guy who has put so many satellites up in the sky but whose mercurial and unique, to put it diplomatically. So is the US’s plan for staying ahead of both Russia and China to ultimately put more and more power in the hands of Elon Musk?

Right now, there’s no question that SpaceX and Elon Musk plays an extraordinarily dominant role in the ability to launch to orbit, and the military is excessively reliant on SpaceX. So at this moment, it’s an uncomfortable domination by SpaceX. Of the 9,400 objects in orbit right now, 5,235 of them are SpaceX Starlink satellites. So almost all of the satellites in orbit from any nation in the world are Elon Musk. But the Department of Defense realizes that it can’t be so reliant upon one company for launch. And so the Pentagon is also signing contracts with small launch companies to quickly be able to put military satellites into space, with just a few days notice.

And so there’s a lot of money that’s being spent to build out this capacity.

Right. So what you’re really saying is that this new space race is going to come with and foster a new space military industrial complex that’s going to be the recipient of many billions, maybe trillions of dollars in taxpayer money.

That’s right. The United States is already in the middle of an incredible explosion in the commercial space industry because the number of commercial launches is growing at a really crazy rate. And in the entire world right now, there are approximately 10,000 objects in orbit. And within the next 10 years, the expectation that it’s going to be something like 25,000 satellites in orbit. So there’s a huge boom right now in the space industry globally.

So, Eric, when I step back, it feels like the inevitable outcome of this new space race, this weapons space race is a very potentially expensive version of what we already have, which is that famous concept of mutually assured destruction, right? It’s this idea that all three of these countries have nuclear weapons, and it keeps us all in check — Russia, China, the US. We don’t attack each other directly because we all fear that the other country attacked would fire back in obliterating ways that would never make it worth it. And so isn’t that where we’re headed with this battle over space? All three countries are going to be spending a tremendous amount of money eventually to reach some kind of loose parity that prevents us all from doing something really horrible to the other country.

I sort of reject your premise. And I think that in fact the thing that the United States is concerned about is it has had such a massive advantage in space for so long, and it’s been so central to our global military supremacy. And suddenly, if you have another nation that’s walking in and becoming your rival in that environment, that’s really worrisome to the American military. And they’re determined to prevent China from matching the United States military capacity in space.

You’re saying this is not about the three countries ever achieving parity. It’s about the US ensuring that parity is never achieved because if it’s achieved, then everything changes.

Right. I think that basically the Pentagon wants to ensure that it can maintain dominance in space and not just parity because space-based dominance is so vital to the way that the United States military has operated for years now.

[AMBIENT MUSIC]

Well, Eric, thank you very much. We appreciate it.

Thanks for having me.

Here’s what else you need to know today. On Tuesday, President Biden summoned House and Senate leaders to the White House in an attempt to avoid the latest potential government shutdown. That shutdown, which could begin at midnight on Saturday, would be the result of strident demands from House Republicans, who have attached right-wing policies to basic spending bills that have made them impossible to pass in the Senate.

We believe that we can get to agreement on these issues and prevent a government shutdown, and that’s our first responsibility.

As he left the White House, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed optimism that a shutdown would be averted.

And we have been working in good faith around the clock every single day, for months and weeks and over the last several days quite literally around the clock, to get that job done.

And in a rebuke to President Biden, more than 100,000 Democratic voters in Michigan cast protest ballots that declared themselves uncommitted to express disapproval of the president’s handling of the war in Gaza. That number far exceeded the goal of 10,000 uncommitted ballots that activists had set for themselves and could spell trouble for Biden in the general election. Michigan is a key swing state, where Biden defeated Donald Trump in 2020.

The Tour Guide

The Tour Guide

  • The unfortunate day in the life of a Spaniard free-tour guide in London. His graffiti tour will evolve into a nightmare where main character will mutate from a cool guy "smiling for tips" into an "out of control" disappointed psychopath.
  • Vicente begins a new day in good spirits, with his work as a street art tour guide in one of the "coolest" London areas. The job is below his education level, his mother says, but Vicente faces the task with excitement. A tour guide living only on tips implies submission and sympathy and Vicente is quite a good .it for this profile. But the pressure accumulated with debts with his landlord, the fact that he is sharing a bed with a roommate, the approaching trip of his girlfriend and his frustrating career take him to a cliff edge. During the television program interviews and through the Skypes with his mother and girlfriend, he seems measured and controlled. But, Vicente begins to realize the precariousness of his situation. In parallel, Vicente is chosen to be part of a British television programme, the camera follows him during a terrible day of work, where everything goes from bad to worse. He will run away from gangs, he will be faced with incredulity, vandalism and the intrigues of his tourist group, who will eventually dessert him. With the final offense from one of the tourists, Vicente will be unable to take anymore; he will explode in front of the camera and will try to kill this person.
