Day 1   SPLIT (D)

Transfer from the Split airport to Split harbour for check-in from 14.00h onwards. After settling in, enjoy the guided tour of Split, a historic town under UNESCO world heritage protection with an abundance of Roman architecture – of special interest is the magnificent Diocletian Palace, once the home to the Roman Emperor. After the tour, return to the ship for a welcome meet & greet cocktail reception on board. Overnight in Split.

Day 2   SPLIT – (BOL) HVAR (B, L)

Morning departure to the island of Brač, where swimming is planned at the most famous beach in Dalmatia – Zlatni Rat near Bol. Its shingle promontory shifts from side to side as the wind and waves constantly cause the beach shape to change. Bol is a typical fishermen’s village converted into a popular tourist destination yet retaining its charm. Continue towards the jet-set island of Hvar with lunch on board at the Pakleni Islands.  Hvar is the longest and sunniest island in the Adriatic, known for lush lavender fields and breath-taking beauty. Arrive in the afternoon for a guided tour of the town’s historical landmarks – the Renaissance cathedral with its original tower, and the oldest community theatre in Europe founded in 1612. Hike up the zig-zag path to the town fort overlooking the harbour for lovely scenic views of the vessel and the Pakleni islands. In the evening Hvar offers a great choice of entertainment – numerous restaurants, bars and clubs with many open long into the night. Overnight in the port.

Day 3   HVAR – BIŠEVO (Blue Cave)/ VIS (B, L, T)

Early morning cruise towards the small island Biševo to visit the Blue Cave, a magnificent natural phenomenon (entrance to be paid on the spot – approx. 18EUR). As sometimes weather conditions can be very unpredictable, the possibility of a cave visit will depend on those conditions however, you will be notified in time. Continue to the island of Vis, once a strategic naval Yugoslav base and closed to the public for years. Due to this isolation, Vis retains a special charm – “the Mediterranean as it once was” making it really interesting to visit. Situated on the northern side of the island, Vis has developed near the remains of ancient Issa, the first urban centre in Croatia. Sample local wines. If interested, visit the remains of the Roman Thermal Place, the City Museum or simply take a walk enjoying the views of the beautiful Villae Rusticae situated along the waterfront. Overnight in the port of Vis.

Day 4   VIS – KORČULA (B, L)

Early morning departure towards the island of Korčula, best known as the birthplace of Marco Polo. Stop for lunch in one of the secluded bays en route. Afternoon arrival in Korčula followed by a guided walking tour of this enchanting town surrounded by walls and one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Mediterranean. The fishbone street pattern was used in Korčula Old Town’s design to provide a natural cooling effect providing citizens with sheltered and comfortable accommodation. Optional excursion to a small village near Korčula for a typical Dalmatian dinner and to find out more about the history and traditional way of living. Overnight in Korčula.

Day 5   KORČULA – MLJET (B, L)

The next morning, head further south to the Island of Mljet. The legend says Greek hero Odysseus spent years on this island when he was captured by the nymph Calypso. Join the cruise manager for a stroll to the famous salt lakes in the Mljet National Park and enjoy the boat ride to St. Mary Isle to visit an ancient Benedictine monastery, an old abbey and a Church dating back to the 12 th  Century. Alternatively, rent kayaks, bicycles, scooters or convertible cars to roam around the National Park or island on your own, but beware of the nymphs! Enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the island. Overnight in port Polača or Pomena.

Day 6   MLJET – SLANO (STON) (B, L, T, CD)

Departure for the small village of Slano on the mainland, a peaceful fishermen’s village and the starting point for Ston, another, once fortified small village famous for its oysters. After exploring the town’s vast medieval ramparts, heading for a small village nearby  Mali Ston to learn more about oysters and a special tasting of this delicacy. Transfer back to the vessel for the Captain’s dinner with live entertainment.

Day 7   SLANO (STON) – DUBROVNIK (B, L)

Early morning departure to Dubrovnik, one of the world’s most beautifully preserved medieval cities. Before tied up at the Gruž harbour, enjoy a cruise alongside the old Dubrovnik city walls while lunch is served on deck. After docking, transfer to the old town for the guided walking tour of this magical town. Take the cable car from the Old Town to Srđ mountain to enjoy scenic views of the Walls and the Elaphiti Islands. Meander through the narrow streets, exploring the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture or walk on top of the 1940 m long city walls. Overnight in Dubrovnik.

Day 8   DUBROVNIK (B)

Gather for one final breakfast on the vessel, followed by goodbyes to your crew and new friends.

What Cruise to take?

There are several cruises to choose from if you don’t want to sail at your own leisure. Choose your own exploration experience, such as a cruise that takes you from Split to Dubrovnik or even a boat that circles a number of islands.

The most well-known sailing cruises will take you to some of the major islands that dot Croatia ‘s coast, with Brač, Hvar, and Vis being the most well-liked locations. Don’t pass up the chance to take one of the many sailing cruises available to make your time in Croatia even more enjoyable.

Croatia has a plethora of sailing tours, excursions, and cruises. All being offered throughout Split ‘s coastline. There are cruises leaving from Split that go for several weeks, others only a few days, but the most popular ones go for seven days and visit various islands. The seven-day cruises that depart from Split can be ideal for you if you enjoy travel and exploring new places.

In order to save time on your Split cruise , it is usually important to make reservations in advance. Before docking at one or more locations, it is always best to find out exactly what activities are available there.

What can you do on a cruise

Ever since man chose to make lengthy sea trips into unexplored locations, cruising has been a part of life. Cruises out of Split may be one of the most exhilarating and exciting methods to see this stunning nation for that reason. Because Split cruises have gotten more inexpensive, more of us can afford to travel the great distance across the sea.

A Split cruise will allow you to explore and unwind while enjoying a novel and refreshing way to discover the delights of Croatia’s Adriatic coast. Avoid having a dull vacation, take a cruise from or to Split through Croatia! We are positive you’ll enjoy it whilst sailing across the Dalmatian coastline. After all there is a number of things which you can get yourself up to along your travels; before or after the cruise from/to Split.

It’s no secret that Croatia’s shoreline is dotted with thousands of different islands, many of which are uninhabited but still provide enough of visual candy. Cruises in Croatia provide a number of breathtaking sites from and to Split.

With its ancient towns and natural parks dotting its landscape, Croatia is recognized as a stunning nation. On a yacht or sailing craft, see the wonders of Croatia’s coast while unwinding over many days of exploration. Old town architecture often draws tourists all year long, but when summer arrives, they have their sights set on a new attraction.

ABOUT THE TOUR

DAY 1 – Saturday: Split Welcome to Split. When you arrive at the airport, our representative will greet you and assist you in boarding to the Split harbor. You will be able to check-in after you arrive at the harbor. From 2 p.m., your cabin will be ready for you. If you arrive early, you will be able to safely store your bags aboard the ship. After settling in, follow our local guide for a tour of Split’s old town, where you’ll learn about Emperor Diocletian’s Palace and the city’s historic history. The Welcome Dinner will be served aboard the ship in the evening. The cruise manager will meet you with the rest of the crew.

Overnight in Split.

DAY 2 – Sunday: Brač The second day of one way cruise from Split will start early in the morning. We will sail to the island of Brač early in the morning, while breakfast is being served. You will have the opportunity to swim at the world-famous Zlatni Rat beach before having lunch on board. We continue our trip to the town of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. We will arrive in the early afternoon thereafter our swim stop. You will have some free time after your arrival to explore Stari Grad at your leisure. Later in the afternoon, we will visit the UNESCO-protected Stari Grad Plain. You will be able to enjoy a gorgeous sunset as well as traditional local Hora agricultural products and a delicious “peka” dinner while surrounded by olive orchards and lavender fields. If you wish to go to Hvar in the evening, it’s only a half-hour drive from Stari Grad, and your cruise manager will help you arrange a local transfer there and back.

Overnight in Stari Grad.

DAY 3 – Monday: Vis We set off for the island of Vis early in the morning, while breakfast is being served. We will stop for a swim in the Paklinski Islands after lunch on board. From 1945 until the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the island of Vis was restricted to tourists, which helped preserve the true aspect of its settlements. We will arrive in Vis in the afternoon, and you’ll have the rest of the day to tour the charming town and take in its numerous attractions. We recommend paying a visit to the Archaeological Museum. It is located in the old Austrian fort Gospina batarija (Batteria della Madona) right on the beach, or simply taking a stroll along the seaside promenade, which is lined with bars and restaurants where you can find a lovely place to eat. Your cruise manager can always give you some recommendations for interesting places to visit.

Overnight in Vis.

DAY 4 – Tuesday: Korčula The fourth day of one way cruise from Split starts early in the morning, before breakfast. We will sail towards Biševo and the Blue Cave, a remarkable natural phenomenon. The Blue Cave is an Adriatic Sea wonder and the most beautiful sight on the island of Vis, and you’ll realize why so many people come to view it every year. We set off for Korčula after visiting the Blue Cave. We will pause along the way to have lunch and swim.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Korčula, the birthplace of Marco Polo, the legendary adventurer. Our local guide will take you on a one-of-a-kind tour of Korčula’s old town. Many fascinating stories and legends about the city and the life of Marco Polo, Korčula’s most famous son, will be told to you.

In the evening, we recommend dining in one of Korčula’s numerous places. If you’re hesitant, you may always ask your cruise manager for recommendations for supper or areas of interest.

Overnight in Korčula.

DAY 5 – Wednesday: Mljet We leave early in the morning for Mljet, one of the Adriatic’s most beautiful and densely forested islands. The island is known for its mysticism, olive trees, vineyards, and lush woodlands, and it is remote and unspoiled. Relax while admiring the unspoiled beauty of the natural world.

A visit to a national park that encompasses the majority of the island is scheduled upon arrival in Pomena. The park’s two saltwater lakes, the Little Lake and the Big Lake, with its Benedictine abbey on the Isle of St. Mary, are the park’s highlights. You are warmly welcomed to the Captain’s Dinner this evening on board the ship.

Overnight in Pomena.

DAY 6 – Thursday: Slano/Šipan We will start the sixth day of a one-way cruise from Split early in the morning, while breakfast is being served. Navigate the gorgeous coastline of Croatia in both style and comfort on this small-ship-based Split to Dubrovnik, or Dubrovnik to Split cruise. A unique detour in Bosnia and Herzegovina, navigating the spectacular Neretva River and visiting either the waterfalls of Krka National Park (northbound) or the colorful island of Brac (southbound) highlight this adventure cruise route that offers a bit of everything, including nights at port to dine out on your own. Get an authentic taste of what the Dalmatian Coast has to offer on this exciting and varied cruise adventure.

Passage is aboard the 36-guest M/S Aurora , a motor yacht with a purpose-built swimming platform for dips in the Adriatic Sea. Weather permitting, the captain will be stopping the ship for regular swim breaks during the trip. Soak up the sun, sea and salty breeze as you sail through the azure waters of the Adriatic, experiencing impressive islands, meandering rivers, stunning beaches and historic towns. Combine a healthy dose of cuisine and culture with a beautifully designed ship, and you have the perfect way to explore the Croatian coast.

While large cruise liners have to moor out at sea and commute into shore via tender, the Aurora can drop anchor in the middle of port towns like Hvar or Korcula, where you can hop on or off the boat as you please. There are no long days at sea since the distance between islands is short. There are plenty of excursions, short walks and port stops. Opt for visiting the Brac, the longest island in central Dalmatia, on the southbound route, or Krka National Park, where you’ll get to see stunning waterfalls and secluded pools, on the northbound route. Another highlight is a special detour to Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s not a stop featured on many Croatia cruises. You’ll see the town’s iconic bridge and have the chance to watch a coffee demonstration followed by a sample of this well-loved brew. Drop an anchor in Hvar and indulge in the glitz and glamour of this chic island. And venture up the River Neretva. Wander through the romantic old town of Korcula and enjoy tastings at a local winery, and dock in the stunning walled city of Dubrovnik.

Southbound Split to Dubrovnik Cruise Itinerary

Enjoy 8 days of coastline and island hopping on this southbound Split to Dubrovnik cruise itinerary. The southbound itinerary uniquely includes the island of Brac and a tour of Dubrovnik with a local guide. An extra lunch is also included in the half-board meals.

A red line showing the southbound route of Croatian Coastal Cruising from Split to Dubrovnik

Dobrodosli! Welcome to Split, Croatia. There is so much to see and do in this gorgeous seaside oasis, so it’s recommended you arrive a couple of days early to fully experience this city. Your luggage can be dropped off at the ship from noon, so feel free to explore Split at your leisure before boarding commences at 5 pm, when you’ll meet your fellow travelers for a welcome meeting and safety briefing. This evening, sit down to your first group dinner on board before overnighting in port.

This morning sail to the colorful island of Brac. Along the way, stop for a swim in the glittering ocean and enjoy lunch aboard the boat. When you arrive in Brac, the longest island in central Dalmatia, head to the Skrip Museum. As the oldest settlement on the island, this regional museum is full of fascinating history. After, visit the Olive Oil Museum to explore the history of this cooking staple on the island. Here, you’ll also have the opportunity to taste some local olive oil along with some local produce (and pick up a souvenir, if you fancy). Tonight, enjoy some free time exploring Brac or lounging on the boat.

breakfast, lunch

Set sail for the island of Hvar, enjoying breakfast on board. Stop to swim in the waters of the Adriatic at a secluded beach close to Stari Grad, Hvar’s old town. Arrive in Stari Grad around midday and look across one of Europe’s oldest towns while lunching on board the Aurora. Next, take a bus to explore the island known as the “Queen of the Dalmatian Islands.” Visit a nearby farm and try local produce. Afterwards, drive to Hvar town for an orientation walk, then enjoy free time to explore. Return to Stari Grad and dine at a local restaurant of your choosing. Overnight in Hvar (Stari Grad).

Set sail early towards Opuzen, breakfasting on board and then stopping to swim. Enjoy lunch on board as you sail up the Neretva river towards Opuzen. On arrival, jump into small wooden boats for a leisurely cruise through the surrounding wetlands (with local snacks and music on board). End up at a beautiful local restaurant overlooking the water for Peka veal and other local dishes then board the boats and return to Opuzen. This evening, you may like to venture out to the friendly bars around the town square to meet the locals.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

It’s an early start this morning as you make your way to Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina by minibus. Take a tour with a local guide, visiting a coffee shop where you will see how the Bosnian coffee is made followed by a tasting of it. On arrival, visit the Matusko winery for a wine tasting and tour of the vineyards. Return to the ship to enjoy dinner onboard. Overnight in Trpanj.

Note that Mostar’s position in a river gorge can make it extremely hot. The streets of the old quarter are paved with river rock which can be a bit slippery and tricky to walk on. On this day, please ensure you have good walking shoes, a hat and drink plenty of water.

Optional, added cost activities this day may include visits to the Koski Mehmed Pasa Mosque, War Photo Exhibition, Old Bridge Museum and Koski Mehmed Pasa Mosque & Minaret.

This evening you’ll be spoiled for choice with many restaurants overlooking the waterfront; ask your leader for their recommendations. Overnight in the port of Korcula.

Take your lunch on board before arriving in Dubrovnik in the early afternoon where you’ll join a local guide to explore this beautiful walled city. Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

Overall a really fun trip & beautiful country. Was a good balance of relaxing/swimming and trips/hikes. We had one of the best groups of people aboard. Everyone meshed really well. And our guides were one of our favorite things about the cruise.

Croatia was a beautiful country. Overall a really fun trip. Was a good balance of relaxing/swimming and trips/hikes. Very hot this time of year which might not suit everyone. The Croatian people were very nice and you felt safe wherever we went.

Accommodations Review

Rooms were nice. Shower was decently big and water was hot.

Meals Review

Food was overall very good. Lunch portions could be smaller.  Don’t necessarily need 3 courses (including dessert) for lunch.

Itinerary Review

Safari boat ride in Opuzen to restaurant was a pleasant and fun surprise. Mostar bridge was awesome to see. Trpanj and Matusko wine tasting was fun. Didn’t really have any places I didn’t like. Some people complained about the end of the trip having basically 2 days in Split but wasn’t a huge deal to me.

Transportation Review

Transport to and from the airport was on time and safe.

Crew & Guides Review

Ziggi our main guide was excellent. Very personable and informative. He had a great sense of humor and kept the trip fun. Andro the second guide was also very good. He had a lot of knowledge on the areas we visited and was very active with us in all the excursions. He made a point to make sure no one felt left out. Together they were a very strong guide team and one of our favorite things about the cruise. The local guide in Korcula was especially funny and informative too.

Fellow Passengers Review

This was one of the best groups of people. Everyone meshed really well. At least half of the passengers were repeat Intrepid travelers. I think that speaks well for their business model.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Kevin Marshall did a great job keeping us informed and answering any and all questions promptly.

Driving Dubrovnik to Split: Best Routes & Places to Stop on the Way

D riving Dubrovnik to Split is the fastest and easiest way to get between the two cities. The drive is 232km and takes just under 3 hours to complete. The drive is relatively easy, and going from Dubrovnik to Split by car is a great choice as it gives you much more freedom and flexibility.

We recently took a road trip across Croatia, and decided to drive both the coastal road from Split to Dubrovnik and the A1 highway from Dubrovnik to Split.

Based on this experience, we’ve reviewed the best driving route, tips for driving in Croatia, and where to stop between Dubrovnik and Split.

Get Lost in Wanderlust contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase using one of the links below, we may receive a very small compensation at no extra cost to you.

We used Discover Cars to book our rental car in Croatia, and found it to be a great way to find the highest-rated and best price on a rental car.

How to get from Dubrovnik to Split by Car

There are 2 main ways to get from Dubrovnik to Split by car, either take the D8 Coastal Road or the A1 Highway. Below is information on both routes as well as on renting a car..

Where to Rent a Car in Dubrovnik

There are many places to rent a car in Dubrovnik, including downtown or at the Dubrovnik Airport. I personally use Discover Cars to find the highest-rated and best rental car.

Click Here to Find and Book a Rental Car in Dubrovnik

Tip: If you are flying to Dubrovnik, I suggest exploring the city for a few days before renting a car to drive to other places. However, if you already have a rental car, check out this guide for cheap parking in Dubrovnik .

Driving Routes for Dubrovnik to Split

There are two main routes to choose from when driving from Dubrovnik to Split: The A1 Highway (E65) or the D8 Coastal Road.

Leaving from Dubrovnik, you will start on a coastal road D674 and follow it for about 1.5 hours. From there, you will cross the bridge and then decide on continuing on a coastal road or taking the highway.

Pelješac Bridge

After driving on the D674 coastal road, you will come to the Pelješac Bridge. The Pelješac Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that opened to the public in 2022.

The best part about this bridge is that you can now bypass the Neum Border Crossing. Prior to this bridge, it was necessary to drive through Neum, which is a part of Bosnia and required going through border control.

Not long after the Pelješac Bridge, you will need to decide if you want to take the A1 Highway Route or stay on the D8 Coastal Road.

Route Option 1: A1 Highway

Taking the A1 Highway (Road E65) is the fastest way to get from Dubrovnik to Split. The drive is 232 km and takes around 2 hours and 50 minutes.

The highway is in great condition and at many points has two lanes on each side, making it easy to pass. The road is also smooth and is an easy drive.

There are tolls along the A1 Highway, but in our experience the tolls were not very much and it was worth it for the quick and easy drive to Split.

One thing to note is that you pay tolls when exiting the toll road rather than upon entering it.

Route Option 2: D8 Coastal Road

The D8 Coastal Road is a two-lane road along the coast. Taking the D8 Route from Dubrovnik to Split will be around 218km, but the drive takes closer to 3 hours and 45 minutes.

It is a beautiful drive, perfect for those that have extra time and prefer a more scenic route.

The road is in good condition, but keep in mind it does go along cliff edges at times and it is important to watch other cars since it is only a two-lane road.

6 Best Places to Stop between Dubrovnik and Split

One of the best parts about going from Dubrovnik to Split by car is the flexibility to stop at unique places along the way.

Below is information on where to stop between Dubrovnik and Split. Keep in mind you won’t be able to see everything in one drive.

1. Beach Prapratno

Location: 20230, Metohija, Croatia

Beach Prapratno is a small beach along the Adriatic sea, just a few kilometers off from road D674.

This beach has beautiful crystal clear waters and is truly a hidden gem. Unlike most beaches in Croatia, this beach has golden sand instead of pebbles, which adds to its charm.

2. Medieval Town of Ston

Location: 20230, Ston, Croatia

The town of Ston is located just off from Road D674, making it a convenient stop along your drive from Dubrovnik to Split. Ston is known for its charming old town, impressive stone walls, and for its delicious Oysters.

The best thing to do during a short stop in Ston is wander the streets of the old town, which is filled 14th century, Venetian style buildings. If you like seafood, you’ll want to try some of the famous Ston Oysters in town.

If you have the time and energy, you can also hike up to the Ston Fortress or walk along portions of the Ston Walls. The Ston Walls span for over 5km and are the longest complete fortress system in Europe.

3. Biokovo Nature Park

Location: Biokovska cesta, 21325, Biokovo, Croatia

If you drive along the D8 Coastal Road, you can stop at the Biokovo Nature Park. The park is located on Mount Biokovo, which overlooks the Makarska Rivera.

While the Biokovo Nature Park has many viewpoints and hiking trails, the most popular attraction is the Biokovo Skywalk. It is the first skywalk in Croatia and is an impressive 1228 above sea level.

Due to the Biokovko Nature Park being on a mountain, it is typically open seasonally and can close due to weather conditions. For info on opening times, check the Skywalk website .

4. Makarska Rivera

Location: 21300, Makarska, Croatia

The Makarska Rivera is also located along the D8 Coastal Road route from Dubrovnik to Split.

The Makarska Rivera stretches for 60km from the towns of Brela and Gradac, and consists of beautiful coastline with bays, small villages, and gorgeous beaches.

The main town along the Makarska Rivera is Makarska, which has a beautiful old town square and seaside promenade.

5. Modro Jezero: The Blue Lake

Location: 21260, Imotski, Croatia

If you decide to take the A1 Highway from Dubrovnik to Split, you can take a detour to Modro Jezero, also called the Blue Lake. In total, the detour will take an extra hour of drive time but it is worth it if you love hidden gems and nature.

The Blue Lake is located just outside of the small town of Imotski. It is a large lake known for its beautiful blue water and is a popular swimming spot.

Nearby the Blue Lake is the Red Lake, which is much smaller and is surrounded by unique red cliffs. You can’t swim at the Red Lake but it is still pretty scenic.

6. Klis Fortress

Location: 21231, Klis, Croatia

Just before you get to Split, is the impressive Klis Fortress. This fortress has a complex history and was used for centuries as a fortification.

It is unknown when construction first began, but archeologists have found that people were settled on the fortress grounds as early as the 3rd century BCE.

In modern times, Klis Fortress has become famous as it was the filming site for Khaleesi and the city of Meereen in the Game of Thrones tv series.

Tips for Driving Dubrovnik to Split

On our recent trip to Croatia, we drove all across the entire country (including driving Split to Dubrovnik and then back Dubrovnik to Split).

Based on these experiences, below are a few tips for driving Dubrovnik to Split :

Speed limits are typically 130 km/h on highways, open roads it is usually 90 km/h.

Always opt for full-coverage insurance or make sure you have full coverage car insurance through your credit card.

On the toll roads, you’ll receive a ticket when entering and when you exit the road you will put that ticket in the machine to make your payment (similar to leaving a parking garage in the US).

Use caution on the coastal roads – while it is scenic, it is important that the driver pays attention to the road. There are some pull-off spots along the way.

If you do pull-off the road, make sure its a designated pull-off spot and be very careful getting back on the road as cars sometimes drive really fast around these winding roads.

To find, compare, and book car rentals in Croatia, you can use Discover Cars .
