Is it possible to travel with a cat? Heck yes! We are proof that it’s possible & Yoda makes our adventures around the world even more meaningful.  

But we have definitely found that having the right cat travel gear can make all the difference when it comes to helping your furry explorers feel safe & comfortable. 

In fact, it’s one of our top tips when asked how to get a cat used to traveling. 

So we’ve decided to create a cat travel equipment list for new adventure kitties, recommending all the top items you’ll need for flying, driving or hiking your way around the globe with your fur-friend by your side. 

These items can help train your cat to travel like a pro & make your life as a pet parent 100x easier.

We’ll be sharing our personal favorite options for these below, covering all the top travel gear for cats, plus a few top tips along the way. To set you and your feline friend up for a calm & enjoyable trip!

But first – how do we pick our travel favorites? Paul, Yoda & I have a certain criteria that we like to stick to:

• Cat-centric – We choose products that are made specifically for cats, with their wellbeing in mind. We choose items that are geared towards their safety & happiness, allowing them to fulfill natural urges in healthy ways. 
• Eco-friendly – We always try to find the most sustainable options we can, with Earth’s health in mind. While no one is ever perfect, our choices can make a difference – so we reflect this in our suggestions. 
• Accessible – We all love to spoil our pets, but that can mean something different to each of us. So we include a range of options at different price tags, to include all cat lovers in our community. 

1. Cat Carriers 

While you may not think you need a carrier if you are heading off in your RV, even when you aren’t traveling by plane a cat carrier can come in real handy. You never know when you might need to visit the vets, or need to contain your cat for some other reason. 

This is why I like super sturdy yet lightweight options. Bonus points if they fold down too!

Our favorite all-rounder is the Mr. Peanut’s Airline Approved Soft Sided Pet Carrier . A great fit for pet parents looking to get a good value-for-money, a collapsible & expandable option, and also airline approved!

2. Travel dishes 

For travel dishes, you want something light, easily packable & sturdy enough to keep up with your adventures! 

If you are hiking or out on the road, a collapsible bowl will be your best way to go. I like the Simple SLSON Collapsing Bowl , again because it’s lightweight, really durable (so it will last) & super easy to clean. Plus it’s got a handy clip, so if you want it easily accessible or can’t squeeze it in anywhere, you’re covered! 

If you’re in a campervan or RV, you might want a more permanent solution that’s still travel friendly. For this I’d recommend a light, non-slip bowl. This option from Beco is cool because its low rim is whisker friendly, and it’s made from durable & sustainable bamboo. Grippy rubber pads secure the bowl from below too.

For an extra dash of travel security, I sometimes add a non-slip mat too – for those rockier journeys! This Bohemian Pet Food Mat is a winner on all fronts. It’s made from recyclable materials, is waterproof and grippy & it’s super cute too (Bingo!).

3. Water Carrier

Having fresh water on hand is always important when traveling, especially on longer trips. So a good pet water bottle is top of my list for cat car travel accessories.

I love this Pet Water Bottle , because it’s got a huge capacity & easy carry options. Meaning you’ll make the most of every refill without it weighing you down. 

More importantly, it’s BPA free, the parts are easily detachable for cleaning & it’s recyclable too. 

Though it’s designed for dogs, I also love the Kong stainless steel options – especially for hot climates. These are a little bulkier, but they keep water cool for a super long time, which can really help a furry kitty on a hot day! The clip means you can attach it to your belt for hiking too. 

P.S – It’s always a good idea to confirm the cleanliness and hygiene level of drinking water before filling your bottle.

A long day’s traveling leads to plenty of naptime ahead. Comfortable, non-bulky yet supportive bedding is key to helping your cat feel cozy, wherever they are.

5. Cat Travel Litter Box

Disposable boxes might sound like a big no no, but KITTY SIFT has boxes that are made from recycled paper, meaning they are compostable when you are done with them – amazing right! 6. Cat Backpack 

Perfect for seeing the sights together, we like a cat backpack with window options or an opening so your kitty can watch the world go by. Yoda loves it!

We own the Mister Peanut Backpack and we love it because:

• It can hold up to 15 lbs, so even larger cat breeds can enjoy a ride on your back.
• It has a harness clip, so your cat can hang out/pop their heads out safely.

7. Leash & Harness

When it comes to travel, we are always on the hunt for the next best cat harness so Yoda can join along on our local exploration. We look for harnesses that are safe but easy to slip on, durable, non-bulky & comfy but always stylish! 🙂

8. Travel Friendly Toys

Keeping cats entertained is just as important when you are on the road. Especially if you are in a confined space for a short, or longer period of time. 

It’s great to bring a few of your kitty’s favorites with you , as this can help them feel more at home wherever you are. But pick wisely – it’s probably best to leave anything hefty behind and just take your smaller toys. 

A compostable or recyclable scratching pad, like these 3 in 1 Scratch Pads , is a great way to keep your packing light whilst also allowing your kitty to do that all-important claw sharpening!

On your way, you can also use any cardboard leftovers, such as toilet rolls or boxes, to create eco-friendly fortress toys or treat dispensers for your feline sidekick. 

 9. First Aid Kit 

It always pays to be prepared, and adding to your own first aid kit with a few feline specific supplies is always top of my packing list. 

Including some pet-safe bandages, antiseptic & tape are a must.

Traveling can be stressful. When you travel with a cat doesn’t exactly make it any easier! To make car travel with a cat long distance easy and safe for both of you, you’ll want to pick up these 11 cat travel accessories.

We drove with our cat in the car for 26 hours from Montreal to Florida. We crossed the Canada-US border, and stayed overnight in 2 hotels with him. This was the longest he’s been in the car, and his first hotel experience.

The journey couldn’t have been more successful and we made it to Florida with a very happy cat!

11 Cat Travel Accessories You Need For Safe Travel With A Cat Long Distance

You want your kitty to be as comfortable as possible when you travel in the car long distance…right? There are a few must-have items you can get to make it the least stressful trip possible for them.

I had all these items on our 26 hour long car ride with our cat. Even if I didn’t end up using all of these cat travel accessories, I was happy that I had them just in case I needed them.

1. How To Travel With A Cat: Get A Safe & Roomy Cat Carrier

This is the most important thing you’ll need for safe car travel with a cat long distance. It isn’t safe to have your cat roaming around in the car. They can go places they shouldn’t be and distract the driver. More importantly, you want them to be safe if anything should happen while driving.

So, you want a cat carrier that’s roomy enough so they can sit up, stretch, and move around a bit. Remember, they’re going to be in there for a long time.

We bought a Pet Design dog carrier although I don’t think it’s available anymore. This one from PetSeek seems very similar (and maybe even better!). On top of the large size, what I really like about the PetSeek Carrier is the metal frame. This will help protect and keep your furry friend safe! P.S. It also collapses flat for when you aren’t using it. ( See prices on Amazon )

If you have more room in your back seat this double cat carrier on Amazon is even bigger! It gives your kitty PLENTY of space and can even hold a litter box if that’s something you’re looking for.

2. A Cat Backpack For Easy Transport

Depending on the cat carrier you buy, you may want to invest in a way to easily transport your cat from the car to the hotel depending on how long your road trip is. The large carrier will stay in the car, and you don’t have to lug it anywhere.

We like the Pecute backpack for this . It was super convenient to bring our cat into hotels and collapses for when you’re not using it. I love all the extra features as well, like the pockets, a leash to attach him to, and it expands so your cat can even sleep in it. See the Pecute Backpack on Amazon.

It’s also convenient for when you can’t leave them in the car (for bathroom breaks…etc.). This way you can easily bring them with you!

Another option is to use a duffel bag for cats. We liked the idea of a backpack better because it frees up our hands to open doors and carry more luggage into the hotel.

3. A Cat Travel Litter Box

When you have to go you have to go. A cat isn’t like a dog where they can go on any grass anywhere. You can bring any litter box, but I recommend getting a cat travel litter box.

That doesn’t mean it has to even be a litter box though. All you really need is something that you can close – for the smell, and easy transport to and from the car.

There are cat travel litter boxes ( like this one on Amazon ) but instead, we used a plastic container and filled it with litter – it worked perfectly! You also want to make sure to use and bring the litter your cat is used to. It’s all about making them feel the most comfortable as possible during car travel.

Keep in mind your cat can hold their pee for up to 48 hours. So they most likely won’t need to go while you’re driving. But you will need a cat travel litter box if you’re planning on staying overnight somewhere.

4. Pee Pee Pads Are A Must To Travel With A Cat In A Car

Accidents happen and it’s best to be prepared for when they do. Pee pee pads are typically used to when training puppies to pee. But I lined the bottom of the cat carrier with them. This way, just in case my cat couldn’t hold it in, or threw up, it would be easy to clean up and replace. See pee pee pads on Amazon .

We thankfully didn’t need these in the end, but I’m still happy we had them. I read horror stories about car travel with a cat long distance with cats gets nauseous driving through the mountains and throwing up everywhere.

The point is that you never know how your cat will react to such a long drive, and the different (potential mountainous) terrain you’ll be driving on. So this is a good safety net.

5. Car Travel With A Cat – Keep Them Calm!

If your cat is stressed in the car, or may get stressed sleeping in a new place for the night, get them something to calm them down. There are a few options for how to do this. It’s all about finding the one that works best for your cat.

The first option is Feliway spray that mimics the natural pheromone that sends calming messages to cats. You can spray this in their carrier for the drive or there’s also a diffuser you can use for when you arrive at your location. This will help calm them down and prevent unwanted behaviours. This was recommended to get by my vet.

Another option is to get calming treats or speak to your vet about getting a prescription if you know your cat is a nervous traveller.

I also like to give my cat silver vine sticks to chew on. I wouldn’t recommend this for the actual drive when you travel with a cat in a car because as you have to keep an eye on them to not eat any large pieces. But you can try giving it to your cat before putting them in the carrier, or once you arrive at your destination to calm them down.

6. Collapsible Bowls For Car Travel With A Cat

Of course you don’t need bowls to collapse when you travel with a cat in a car, but it makes it a lot easier while you’re on the road and saves you precious space.

I just have one and I would swap between food and water throughout the day – although my cat didn’t end up touching his food or water when travelling in the car. But it made it easy to always give him the option at stops. They also clip on to his carrier which makes for easy access.

7. Cat Travel Accessories For Safety: A Harness And Leash

You may not need think you need this if you aren’t planning on taking your cat out of his carrier. But I think it’s a good back up item to have just in case you need to.

Like I said, you don’t know how your cat is going to react with being in the car for long distances.

After a few hours, they may need to leave the carrier. Or they might need to use the cat travel litter box while on the road. A harness and leash is the safest way to let them do that. Buy a harness and leash on Amazon .

8. Special Treats For Positive Reinforcement

There are a few treats my cat just LOVES and because of that, he only gets them on special occasions to really show that he’s being a good boy. You’ll want to bring these types of treats with you.

My cat didn’t want to eat his food in the car, but he did eat his favourites treats. At least this way I wasn’t starving him all day.

Plus I also bought a new food topper for when you arrive at your destination – some chicken in water. He didn’t drink all day and was too excited when we arrived at the hotel. I was nervous about hum being dehydrated so this was the perfect thing to give him.

9. Extra Blankets Or Outdoor Couch Cover

Depending on your cat, you may want to bring some extra blankets with you to cover anything scratch-able where you’ll be staying.

Instead a blanket, we bought a large outdoor couch cover to bring with us. Our cat doesn’t scratch but he tends to bite and make holes in arm rests of couches.

It’s large enough to cover a big couch in a hotel room. Plus, when we runs around he ends up moving the blankets so we needed something that will fully cover the couch and not risk it falling off.

10. Bitter Spray To Prevent Damage

To go along with the blankets or couch cover, we also brought bitter spray . This is for the things you can’t cover with a blanket.

We’ll spray the bed frame to not scratch it. Or there may be something in the hotel room (like a dangling wire) that is tempting for your cat to chew on.

11. A New Toy For Entertainment

Your cat will be sleeping in their carrier all day long! You’ll need a good way for them to release all their pent up energy once you get to your destination for the night.

A new toy is the perfect way to do that. Our cat gets bored of toys very quickly, so getting him a new toy always keep him engaged – at least for a little bit!

Car Travel With Cats — Road Trips & Moving

But believe it or not, if a cat is properly acclimated and conditioned to riding in a car, they will actually learn to really love it. And you will too!

During the summer months and around the holidays, many of us plan or go on family vacations, and more commonly, families are including their furry feline. The summer is also a busy time for people buying and selling homes, which sometimes means a long-distance move.

Hopefully, your cat is young or has not had a traumatic experience in the car, making your upcoming road trip more viable. Don’t despair if this is not the case; even “more mature cats” can be taught new car riding tricks.

Getting your cat ready for a road trip

Step 1: get your kitty to love their carrier..

After all, unrestrained cats can be a distraction, interfering with your ability to steer or brake, and even become a dangerous projectile in the event of a crash or sudden stop. Like in this case of a cat loose in the car, distracting the driver and causing three accidents! In order to make restraint stress-less for your kitty and yourself, spend some time training your cat to love their carrier before the big travel day arrives.

Step 2: Get your cat to love the car.

Now that your kitty loves their carrier, it’s time to get them loving the car, too! Here are some steps to help you do that. Pro Tip: This car acclimation step is best done with two people … one to drive the car, the other to pet, praise, and treat kitty! That said, it can be done with one person, too, but very carefully.

• Take kitty out to the car, in their carrier.
• With the car parked and the doors and windows closed, sit in the back seat with your cat in their carrier. Partially open one of the carrier doors to get your hand in to play with your cat, pet them, praise them, and give them treats. (Caution: For your own safety and that of your cat, avoid doing this type of in-car training when the weather is too hot or too cold.)
• Once kitty seems settled in and happy in their carrier in the car, place an interactive, treat/kibble-dispensing toy in their carrier with them (the Egg-Cersizer and the SlimCat are great choices ).

• Caution: If your car is parked in your garage while you’re doing this acclimation for your cat, either ensure that your garage door is open or move your car out of the garage and onto the street or driveway. Carbon monoxide is very dangerous for both of you!
• Once your cat is comfortable with the sound and vibration of the engine, it’s time to take some short trips. You don’t want to overdo it here — just go down the street initially, then progress to a block or two, and then gradually extend the distance of the drives. Also, if you frequently drive with your windows open, try some of these "test" drives with the windows down for a bit to see if the sound of the air passing by and the changing air pressures are OK for kitty. Never push these drives further than your cat is comfortable with. Also, be sure to drive calmly and go easy on the gas pedal and brakes. Note: This step will be best with more than one person in the car so that someone can continue to monitor, soothe, and play with kitty while the other person does the driving and focuses on the road.
• Continue to do these steps each day or every few days, and kitty will soon be more than happy to join for car rides! Note: Since each cat and each situation are different, it could take anywhere from a few days of this type of training to several months for an individual cat to love car travel.

Still using the cardboard carrier your cat came home from the shelter in? Here are some of my favorite cat carriers for car travel.

Carriers for around town and shorter trips

These can also be used for longer trips with a leash-trained cat , as you won't need the extra space of the ones linked further below to put a litter box in the carrier with them. It's best to choose a carrier that has an opening at the top, as this often makes it easier and less stressful for everybody when getting them in and out when traveling or visiting the vet. The options linked below all have easy "top access."

Sleepypod carriers: The Mobile Pet Bed (this mobile pet bed may not work for flying on all airlines) and the Air In-Cabin Carrier are truly exceptional and beautifully crafted carriers, and Sleepypod takes pet travel safety very seriously . They do their own crash testing (at the standard set for child safety restraints) on their products and also received excellent marks in the Center for Pet Safety's crash testing studies. They're a bit pricier, but if you can swing it, they're well worth the money!

Sherpa carrier : Another good choice with a long track record of being an excellent and versatile cat carrier, both in the car and when flying.

Amazon Basics two-door, top-load pet kennel : This is a hard-sided carrier that has easy open/close latches (rather than nuts and bolts) to secure top to bottom, as well as a top access door.

Take note that if you want to use your carrier for flying, make sure the size of your hard carrier fits in your airline's under-seat regulations, as the hard carriers aren't as "flexible" as the soft-sided ones when going under the seat.

Cat carriers for longer road trips

Siivton 4-sided carrier : This carrier has expandable sides making this soft-sided carrier a little more spacious for your kitty than a traditional carrier. It doesn't really have enough room for you to include a litter box for your kitty within the carrier so something to consider.

It is an "extra space" option though for car travel that also has an "airline approved" claim, unlike the portable cage (above).

• Don’t feel like doing it DIY, or don’t have the time? Get an awesome pre-fab kitty condo instead! We know of a veterinarian who used one on a cross-country move and their cats loved it. Note: While these kitty condo options will likely help make travel less stressful and more comfortable for your kitty, they do introduce some new safety risks for them (falling from higher shelves or having shelves fall on them in the event of an accident or sudden stop) and perhaps even for you, depending on how/if you secure it within your vehicle. Please take these cautions into consideration should you select one of these kitty condo options. In order to make restraint stress-less for your kitty and yourself, spend some time training your cat to love their carrier before the big travel day arrives.

Car ride logistics with cats — where to go 'potty'

Jumping right down to “business,” … depending on the duration of your travel adventures with kitty and where you’re winding up, you’re going to have to deal with potty planning and bathroom breaks. This is the case both when you’re on the road and when you get to your hotel or wherever your destination is. You can help your cat take care of business on the road in a few different ways.

First, get them a good travel litter box, a litter they like, and (perhaps) even a litter attractant, and then get them used to using this set-up before you ever even need to use the car.

A good travel litter box will be large enough for your cat to fit in and comfortably do their business in, yet small enough to fit in their carrier (see recommended larger car cat carriers above).

If your trip isn’t too far and their carrier isn’t large enough to fit a litter box, your travel litter box for use in the hotel can be a bit larger. The travel litter box should also be waterproof, easy to clean, and collapsible (for easier storage), yet sturdy enough so as to not collapse on kitty when they’re doing their thing in it. There are also disposable litter box options available!

Recommended litter boxes for travel with cats

There are collapsible options ( Necoichi and PetIsFam ) or disposable ones ( Nature's Miracle or Kitty Sifter ). Given that you and your cat’s litter box will be in fairly close quarters, it’s a good idea to go with a litter that’s got good odor control and low dust potential.

While it might be tempting to get a fragranced litter, recognize that the fragrance could actually irritate your cat’s nose and lungs, stressing them out and making it less likely that they’ll actually use their litter box! Below are some recommended cat litters, as well as a recommended cat litter attractant, which sometimes is needed to help a cat remember to use their box, especially in a time of change, like travel.

Recommended litters for travel with cats

All of these litters are considered low-dust, are easily scoopable, and all have excellent absorbency and odor control. The first two ( Boxiecat and Dr. Elsey’s ) are clay-based, the third ( World’s Best ) is corn-based, in case your cat (or you) don’t like clay litter. I’m also including the recommended cat litter attractant in the list, as well as a scoop and items for used litter containment, as those will be important, too. The antimicrobial scoop and caddy is helpful when traveling, so the scoop isn’t laying on your car interior itself!

And depending on the size of your car, how much space you’ve got available, how long your trip is, and how averse you are to having any smell or chance of spillage, you may want to consider the excellent Litter Genie used cat litter storage system. If you want something smaller than the Litter Genie, you can do the simple, sealable bucket (don't forget the lid !) and some tall kitchen garbage bags.

Is your cat used to doing their business outside , or you really don’t want the smell of cat litter and the stuff that winds up in it in your car, or there’s just no room for a litter box in your cat’s carrier? Then, depending on the length of your car trip, you’ll have to make proper bathroom stops for your cat. This is most safely done, though, if you take the time to leash-train your cat well in advance of your travel day! Don’t worry it can be done! Here’s our article on how to leash-train a cat . And another important precaution for cats that you’ll be leash walking and just traveling with in general … have them microchipped at your vet, and ensure that your contact information associated with the microchip is up-to-date !

Speaking about “doing business,” … what about if YOU have to go? What should you do with your cat?

If the temperatures aren’t too hot or too cold to have to worry about leaving your cat in the car, just leave them in their carrier and go about your business. Just try not to take too long. It's usually safe between about 40–65 degrees F (4–18 degrees C), though every cat and every situation will be different, so use this as a rough guide.

Talk to your vet about more specific safe temperature ranges for your cat based on your cat's age, breed (smushed face?), and any chronic medical conditions they may have or medications they may be on. If the temperatures are outside of that range, though, you’re going to have to take some precautions when making your own pit stops (and this includes for meals). In many cases, it’ll be possible for you to bring your cat into the bathroom with you in their carrier! This is the easiest solution if it’s possible and practical.

If it’s over the high end of the temperature range and you can’t bring kitty in with you, take some steps to ensure their comfort and safety when in the car:

• Do your bathroom break at a place where you don’t have to go into a big shop or mall to find and use the bathroom. Gas stations and rest stops along the side of the road are usually good options. Coffee shops often are, too!
• If you have an extra set of car keys with you, leave the car on and the air conditioner running and lock the doors behind you. You’ll be happier to get back into a cool car, too! Caution: This can help a lot, but be aware that car engines and air conditioner compressors can and do fail, leading to excessively hot temperatures building up in the car quickly.
• If leaving the car and A/C running isn’t possible or practical, pre-cool the car the best you can by running the air conditioner on high for several minutes before you get out.
• Park in the most well-shaded spot you can find.
• Park with your front windshield facing the sun and put up a reflective windshield sun shade like this one .
• Cracking the windows doesn’t make a huge difference, but it also doesn’t hurt (so long as your cat is securely in their carrier and there’s no danger of someone reaching in your car and stealing your stuff).
• Make sure kitty has plenty of water.
• Move their carrier from on the back seat to the floor in front of the back seat. Since hot air rises, it should be cooler on the floor.
• Be as quick with your stop as possible. If it’s a food break you’re taking, come back and check on your cat frequently (like every 10 minutes or so, just to be safe).

If it’s under the low end of the temperature range and you can’t bring kitty in with you, take some steps to ensure their comfort and safety when in the car:

• If you have an extra set of car keys with you, leave the car on and the heater running and lock the doors behind you. You’ll be happier to get back into a warm car, too! Caution: This can help a lot, but be aware that car engines and heater compressors can and do fail, leading to cold temperatures building up in the car quickly.
• If leaving the car and heater running isn’t possible or practical, pre-warm the car by turning up the heater to high (if it isn’t already) for several minutes before you get out.
• Add a nice cozy blanket or fleece to your cat’s carrier for them to snuggle up and be warm with. Pro Tip: If it’s a fleece or blanket that has your scent on it, all the better. Your cat will love “having you near” while you’re gone.
• Move their carrier to a sunny spot within the car, if there is one.

Where to stay when traveling with your cat

Road trips and long-distance moves with cats will often require hotel stays for sleeping and resting up (oh, and showering!). But not all hotels or motels are pet-friendly, and even those that are may only have a few pet-friendly rooms. So, here are some tips for finding pet-friendly places to stay when you’re on the road with kitty.

• If you know your route and plans, try to book pet-friendly accommodations early before they book up. This is especially important in the busy summer travel season and around the holidays.
• Some of the bigger hotel and motel chains are generally very pet-friendly. For instance, check out Red Roof Inns, Kimpton hotels, La Quinta, Best Western, and others. The folks at GoPetFriendly.com have a searchable state-by-state database to help you find pet-friendly accommodations.
• Some Airbnb properties are also pet-friendly!

Pro Tip: “Pet-friendly” means that your pets aren’t likely to have been the only pets staying in your room recently! And since not everyone uses flea and other parasite protection on their cats and dogs as regularly as they should… well, you (hopefully) get the picture. For your cat’s sake — and yours — make sure your cat is protected from fleas and other parasite infestation before heading out on the road! Dealing with travel anxiety and carsickness with your cat

Ah, the best-laid plans... It’s possible that even if you take all of the precautions and steps outlined above to condition your cat to car travel they may still be stressed or even experience carsickness in spite of your best efforts. Here are some tips and products to help minimize those possibilities and to help deal with these problems should they arise.

• Composure calming treats for cats : These are great and can be used both before and during travel.
• Thundershirt for cats : Some anxious cats respond really well to the compressive and comforting nature of these anti-anxiety jackets. You'll want to test it out on your cat well in advance of your departure date and even do some of your "test drives" with them wearing their new jacket.
• Feliway pheromone spray : A couple of sprays of this calming pheromone on the towel or mat in your cat's carrier could be just what they need to feel less stressed and more comfortable with travel. Note that with pheromones, a little goes a long way. Don't overdo it — more is not better.
• Catnip spray to spritz their toys and catnip to sprinkle in their carrier , both can provide some great and distracting entertainment for your cat and a nice little "high" that could help reduce their anxiety.
• The likelihood of a cat getting carsick and vomiting can be reduced by not feeding them for a few hours prior to the car ride. Now, this won’t be super practical for a multi-day car trip — after all, kitty has got to eat at some point! But, if it’s just a one-day trip, this might help.
• Talk to your vet about the medication specifically designed to help prevent carsickness and vomiting in pets.
• Similarly, there are also medications your vet may be able to prescribe to help decrease your cat’s anxiety associated with car rides. But be sure to speak with your vet well in advance of your expected departure date, as your kitty may need a current exam, and doing trial or test doses is often necessary to determine what the best and most effective dose or combination will be for your cat.
• Some cats also benefit from and respond to calming music to help reduce their anxieties. And, who knows, it may just help make the drive more pleasant for you, too.

Emergencies on the road

Emergencies do happen, and so the occasion may arise where you’ll need to find a vet when you’re on the road. You can always Google “emergency veterinarian in __zipcode/town__” or use a vet emergency locator .

You'll also want to consider putting together a pet first-aid kit for your car. Here's a shopping list of first-aid essentials . Look for the icon of a little car 🚗 as it's these products that are the most essential in a smaller, travel-sized first-aid kit.

Special travel considerations for cats with chronic health issues and on medications

Before striking out on the road for a long trip or moving with a cat that’s got a chronic medical condition or is on long-term medications — like a cat with diabetes  or chronic kidney disease — there are a few steps and precautions you should take.

• Make sure your cat has had a recent (ideally within the past month or so) exam with your vet. You’ll have more peace-of-mind knowing that their condition is as well managed as possible and that they’re as healthy as can be before hitting the road with them. Your vet will also have recommendations for making their trip as comfortable and safe as possible.
• Bring a copy of your cat’s medical records with you! This should include recent exam notes, laboratory test results, and medication/supplement names and dosages. Your vet can often print these out (with enough notice), and they may even subscribe to an app or other service that allows you to keep updated copies of such records with you always on your phone. This will make visiting another vet on the road if you have to, much easier.
• Especially with cats with known chronic health concerns, it’s a good idea to know about a few vet hospitals along your route and in the area of your destination before you head out. See the vet locator tools and links listed in the section above to start searching.
• If your cat is on a special prescription diet, like for their kidneys, make sure to stock up on it from your vet before hitting the road. It’s not always easy to get prescription diet refills when you’re away from home and your vet’s office! You should take enough with you to last for the duration of your trip PLUS an additional (at least) 2 weeks.
• Similarly, be sure to stock up on your pet’s medications and supplements, as well as any supplies you need for them. This would include needles and a sharps container for safely disposing of and storing used needles for diabetic cats, pills for blood pressure, overactive thyroid, and any other chronic medications. Again, you should take with you enough to last for the duration of your trip PLUS an additional (at least) 2 weeks.
• Pro Tip: Depending on the type of insulin your cat is on, you may be able to get an insulin “pen” that may be more stable outside of the fridge and may be easier to administer to your cat on the road. Talk to your vet to see if an insulin pen is an option for your cat — it isn’t for all cats, but if it is for yours, it could be a great travel (and even long-term) solution for you.

However, if it exceeds the weight limit, it risks breaking, resulting in a loose cat.

Most dogs love jumping in the car — even if it’s just a trip around the block. Cats, on the other hand, aren’t usually the biggest fans of car rides. They prefer staying home where everything looks and smells familiar. That doesn’t mean you have to line up a cat-sitter for your next vacation, though. With these handy cat car accessories, your feline family member will enjoy the trip every bit as much as your dog.

Preparing for the journey

Relaxation is key, additional road trip safety tips.

Before you hit the road, make sure you have everything you need. You don’t want a frantic scramble at the last minute. Worse, you don’t want to have to track down emergency supplies on the road.

Taking a car ride with your cat means checking that you have the following on hand:

The bowls are more like walled wells, and each holds around two-and-a-half cups. We tried this out with a dog who loves to splash, but the built-in placement and the way the bowls are attached mat them virtually spill proof (anytime the dog did scoop out food or spill water, the silicone mat would catch it). We also found the soft silicone veasy to clean with soap and water, and we love how quickly it dries — two big pluses when you’re on the move. Cleaning just takes a little bit of soap and water, though you’ll want to make sure the inside is completely dry before closing the lid to avoid mildew from moisture. The 35-pound capacity is great for longer trips or multiple dogs, and the wheely bottoms mean no heavy lifting. We also like that there’s an included scoop. While it may not be small enough to take on the plane, the top container can easily fit into the backseat or trunk of a car.

This crate is designed to hold up to 15 pounds of pup, but be warned that it can be difficult to balance weight sometimes since the plastic handle is small and placed at the center of the top.

There’s even a step counter. The catch? You’ll need a subscription for this wearable to work. Subscriptions have three options; monthly, yearly, and two-year. This wearable comes with two attachment options and a wall charger.

Unlike many dog seat belts, the Kurgo Direct to Seat Belt Swivel Tether for Dogs clips directly into your car's seat belt fastener versus looping around the headrest. This tether is designed to attach to a dog harness instead of a collar, centering the pull of the tether on your dog's torso rather than their neck. A top pet travel tip from Dr. Rendon is to "be mindful and plan for the temperatures of the places to which you are traveling" and prepare accordingly. Bring coats and booties if it's cold and cooling mats or vests if it's hot. The Ruffwear Swamp Cooler Dog Cooling Harness functions as an evaporative cooling vest and lightweight harness that stays wet to keep your pet up to six times cooler in high temps. Triple-layer cooling panels — wicking outer layer, absorbing middle layer, and an inner dry layer — are located along the chest, stomach, and back. A padded, quick-grab handle allows you to assist your pet easily when needed. Plus, the simple and intuitive side-buckle design makes it a snap to get on and off. The harness's aluminum V-ring clips and reinforced loops can hold up to the demands of rugged outdoor adventures. Bonus? The XXS size was a perfect fit for my medium-size, heat-intolerant (and harness-trained) cat. When it's time to clean, it calls for the gentle cycle and air dry only.

To continue on the theme of preparing for the weather, you can keep your cat or small dog toasty with the K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat. The insertable dual thermostat heater is designed to warm up only when your pet lays on top. From there, it adjusts the heat level to your pet's internal temperature so it's always just right. This is a great travel pet accessory to take camping, on car rides in cold temperatures, or for accommodations without central heating. This bed is big enough for any size cat and small dogs.

Best Dog Boots

They provide great grip and heat protection.

The low-ankle design may cause paws to get wet in snow.

Ruffwear Grip Trex Dog Boots are high-quality, rubber-soled dog boots that protect your pet's paws on rugged terrain, hot rocks and sidewalks, and frosty or salted paths. Some owners even use these boots indoors on slippery hardwood floors thanks to the heavily textured Vibram outsoles. The actual shoes are made from mesh, giving your dog's paws a bit of breathing room in hot climates. The gusset design makes it easy to take these shoes off and on. While these shoes work well on salted pavement and in freezing temperatures (with socks), the short-rise design isn't ideal for walks in more than an inch or so of snow.

Best Water Bottle

The handy design and size also works for cats.

Some pets may not be comfortable drinking out of this unfamiliar shape.

Heat, stress, and anxiety may cause your pet to become thirstier and more dehydrated than usual. For trips with her small chihuahua, Dr. Love prefers the Kalimdor Portable Dog Water Bottle because of its small size and leak-proof design. This one-handed, two-in-one design has a plastic bottle base that can store up to 19 ounces of water (most bottles only hold up to 16 ounces). The scooped-out top functions as a water bowl that holds up to 2.8 ounces of water. Liquid is released directly into the drinking area by unlocking a switch and pushing a button. You can recollect any unused water in the storage bottle instead of tossing it out. The compact design makes it easy to carry in a travel bag or backpack, or you can loop it around your wrist. Our one note is that we wish this had a built-in filter.

Best Portable Litter Box

You don't have to toss out the litter at every stop.

The collapsible design translates to weak sides.

Finding a decent travel litter box is one of the biggest challenges of traveling with a cat. The Travel Cat Porta-Pawty Travel Litter Box solves multiple problems, including wasting litter. The zippered top and built-in side handle enables you to scoop and go, reusing the same lot of litter along multiple stops. Its construction also helps to block odors, which makes stays at pet-friendly hotels more comfortable for everyone involved. The top-flap design and standard litter box dimensions (19 by 14 by 5 inches) give your cat sufficient room to do their business. The seamless, leak-proof interior is a cinch to clean, and when you're not using the bag, it collapses, folds, and snaps into a rectangle that measures 9.75 by 8.5 by 4 inches. Litter helps the collapsible walls of this box stay up and sturdy, so don't hold back when filling it up.

Best Calming Supplement

It has a natural, non-sedative calming effect.

It may not be enough to calm some pets.

According to Dr. Rendon, "Zylkene calming supplements are derived from milk protein and recommended by behaviorists." They can be used for cats or dogs and are a good option for owners who want to try over-the-counter remedies before getting a sedating prescription like Gabapentin or Trazodone from their vet. This supplement's active ingredient, alpha-casozepine, has natural calming properties. Although it's derived from cow's milk, it is lactose-free. The dosage is administered according to weight and can be given in its original capsule form or as a powder mixed into food by opening the capsules. Dr. Rendon recommends starting the supplements a few days before travel. Every pet is different, and Zylkene may not be effective on some animals.

Best First-aid Kit

It only covers four days of basic medical needs.

Love hiking with your dog or running on the beach together? Or do you just want to be prepared for everyday outing accidents? This first-aid kit is a two-in-one medical kit you can keep in your car or toss in your backpack before an outdoor adventure. It comes with two separate pouches of medical supplies — one for you and one for your dog — that can cover basic first-aid needs like splinter and tick removal, wound irrigation, cuts and scrapes, and more. There are enough supplies in each kit to last one person and one dog up to four days. Even though it comes with how-to medical guides, it's not meant for severe injuries.

We combed through results from seven different pet product tests to find some of the recommendations in this roundup, specifically looking for the most travel-friendly options. We tested over 130 pet products, including dog food storage containers, dog backpack carriers, dog car seats, car seat covers, cat carriers, dog crates, and GPS collars. Some staple attributes we tested for in each category included design, performance, value, and ease of use. For carriers, crates, and backpacks, we introduced the products to our pets, carried them around in the carrier, crate, or backpack for 10-15 minutes, and noted how comfortable the item was for both ourselves and our pets. We also did a test run through all the features and cleaning. For dog car seats, we drove around with our dogs in the car seat for a week and then cleaned the car seat, again noting how comfortable we both seemed and the ease of cleaning. All tested products were put through real-world testing scenarios in order to accurately assess their overall performance and value for readers and their pets. We also included T+L editor recommendations that they personally use for their own pets for portable pet bowls and grooming wipes.

Check airline and FAA requirements ahead of travel

Nearly every airline has its own rules for flying with a pet. Check with your airline well ahead of your flight to confirm if your animal will be able to fly on the plane. Many airlines accept service animals but limit the qualifications to certain breeds and type of service. Additionally, short-nosed breeds of cats and dogs such as pugs and Persians are often not allowed to fly in cargo due to breathing concerns . Most flights only allow for a maximum number of in-cabin pets per flight or will only fly with pets in the cargo during certain months. It's wise to make a reservation for your pet well in advance to secure them a spot on board.

Consider microchipping your pet

If your pet isn't already microchipped, your upcoming trip may be just the right excuse to get it done. This is to help others identify your pet and locate the owner in case your pet escapes or runs away during travel. Collars also provide this information but can easily slip off in different circumstances. Microchipping your pet is added protection that you'll be reunited if they get lost and may be required for international trips.

Map out walk and bathroom breaks ahead of time

When planning your trips and travel time, be sure to pencil-in some time for your pet to use the bathroom — and find out where they can relieve themselves. In some (but not all) airports, there are dedicated pet relief areas with fake grass where dog owners can take their pets to use the bathroom. Options for cat owners are far fewer, which is why having a portable litter box on hand is so, well, handy.

According to Dr. Rendon, one of the most important things you can do when traveling with your pet is to check each state or country's travel requirements well in advance of your trip. "You should contact your veterinarian or check the APHIS Pet Travel website for specific requirements," she says. "You may need a health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and approved by an APHIS veterinary officer in order to travel internationally. Your airline may also have specific requirements. Don't wait until the day before you travel to obtain the necessary paperwork!"

You must book a reservation for your pet in advance — some airlines allow you to do it online or through their app, while others will require a phone call.

"If you need to travel with your pet and they are too big to fly in the cabin with you (typically larger than 20 pounds), then cargo is a totally acceptable way to bring them," Dr. Love says. "It is always better to have them in the cabin with you because you can be with them, but that isn't always an option."

Both vets agree that the biggest downside to flying your pet in the cargo is that you're unable to monitor them or give them any anti-nausea or calming medicine as needed. Keep in mind that the cargo area is not temperature controlled and you should avoid flying your pets in very hot or very cold months.

One of the easiest ways to keep your pets safe while traveling is to keep them calm. "Don't wait until the day of travel to introduce your animal to a carrier or crate," suggests Dr. Rendon. "Place a familiar blanket or one of your worn T-shirts in the carrier with your animal so it smells like home. Carriers should be lined with a towel and covered with a disposable wee-wee pad that can be changed if an animal soils the pad mid-trip." She also recommends limiting the size of the meal you feed your pet before traveling in case of nausea. 

Dr. Love recommends exercising your pet before travel so they are more relaxed or having someone sit in the backseat with them.

The cost of flying with a pet depends on the airline, where you are flying to, and whether you're flying your pet cargo or traveling with them inside the cabin. For example, Delta charges $95 for domestic flights with a carry-on pet, $75 for flights from the U.S. to Brazil, and $200 for other international flights, and you must contact the airline directly to determine cargo fees. United Airlines charges $125 each way for a carry-on pet for domestic flights. American Airlines charges $125 for a carry-on pet within and between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (based on each country's entry policy). 

Different airlines have restrictions on the age and breed of pets they allow to travel in the cabin. If your trip includes a voluntary stopover or connection of more than four hours, additional fees may apply for each connection segment. Check with your desired airline for specific pricing and restrictions.

Deciding how long your pet should ride in the car with you will be up to your individual pet. Some dogs may get antsy and need to go on their regularly scheduled walks, burn off energy, and use the bathroom. Monitor your pet during the car ride and check for signs of anxiety.

You Could Buy a Dog Paw Cleaner. Or Just Use an Old Rag.

Toweling off dirty paws is one of my least favorite things about having a dog.

Pinning a wriggling beast in place long enough to wipe down their paws—to remove the mud, snow, salt, sand, and any other detritus that gets caught between their toes before they jump on the furniture—can feel like torture, both for me and for my pup.

Cleaning a dog’s paws can be a year-round activity, and removing the dirt and grime is essential to your animal’s comfort and well-being—as well as to the cleanliness of your floors.

That’s why Wirecutter’s pets expert, Mel Plaut, and I were intrigued when something kept popping up on our social feeds: cylindrical plastic cleaners with little bristles that you stick your pup’s limbs into and use like tiny paw car washes. We wondered if this product would be more effective than the usual damp rag.

Would our muddy buddies end up with squeaky-clean toes that no longer smelled like Fritos? Or would these products be left in the dust? To find out, we tested two popular versions, the Paw Plunger and the MudBuster

Our conclusion: These inventive devices work just fine (and we prefer the MudBuster, due to its smaller size). However, we still recommend that you simply use a wet rag.

Paw Plunger: Effective, but too big and bulky

The Paw Plunger is enormous.

When we opened the box, Mel and I were actually shocked. It’s not as though the size isn’t written plainly in the product description, but unless you’re holding this thing in your hands, you don’t quite get the full effect.

It is the size of a human head. Mel’s head, to be exact.

If this item’s cranium size seems like too much, you’ve got options. The Paw Plunger actually comes in three sizes—petite, medium, and large—based on your dog’s weight. So it can accommodate paws of most sizes. My dog, Buddy, is 50 pounds, so I chose the medium, per the brand’s guidance. Mel chose the same size for 65-pound Dave.

The company said the petite size can also work for cats. I cannot even imagine a scenario where you would want to attempt that. And I don’t have a cat, so all I can say is good luck to any cat owners who try it.

The Paw Plunger’s cylindrical container comes in three colors: blue, black, and pink. And it has an insert with nylon bristles. The instructions are simple: Fill the container up to the top row of bristles (for the medium size, that comes to about 48 ounces of water), and then snap on the top. Then insert your dog’s paw, moving the container in an up-and-down motion. All three sizes have a large handle, to assist you as you plunge your dog’s paw.

After you’ve cleaned your dog’s paws and patted them dry with a towel, just dump out the dirty water, hand-wash or rinse the container clean, and leave it to dry. (Putting the Paw Plunger in the dishwasher is not recommended.)

The motion of the ocean

I was very surprised at how quickly Buddy resigned himself to his fate. Putting him into a sitting position and then slowly dipping his paw into the Paw Plunger was much easier than I’d expected it to be.

Dave’s reaction was similar to Buddy's. “I did have to bribe him with treats through the process because he was definitely weirded out at first, but he didn’t resist very much,” Mel said. “With hand wiping, he usually tries to walk away before I get to the third or fourth paw. For this, I think he was so confused, he just waited for it to be over.”

It helps that the device works quickly—just a few dips and you’re done.

When I was cleaning Buddy’s feet, I found myself wanting to use the washer in a back-and-forth motion, holding the handle to swish. It worked fine when I used it in an up-and-down and in a side-to-side motion, for both sand and mud.

Although I like that the snap-on lid is intended to prevent spills, it’s pretty leaky. I wouldn’t fill the container until I was ready to use it. And I certainly wouldn’t want to put 6 cups of water in it and then have it spill all over my car, since it’s both larger and leakier than a Stanley (quite a feat!).

But the bigger issue is this thing’s size. Carrying it and storing it felt like a burden. I brought it to the beach to clean Buddy’s paws before we got in the car, and I mistakenly put it in my bag so that I could wash his feet right as we got off the sand. The device was cumbersome to carry around, and it was too big to fit in Buddy’s hiking-supply bag. It doesn’t seem worth it to take up trunk or backseat space when a rag will do.

Mel had a similar reaction. “The Paw Plunger is overkill. Way too big, and it uses a ridiculous amount of water,” they said. “And you can’t see the water level inside, so you have to keep sticking your own damn paw inside to feel where it stops.”

MudBuster, slimmer and better

The MudBuster , by contrast, is much smaller. It’s basically a plastic cup with a soft-bristled silicone mat inside and a twist-on ring at the top.

This design leaves the device open, so you wouldn’t want to fill it beforehand. The MudBuster comes in three sizes and colors (blue, gray, and fuschia). For Buddy, I ordered the medium size (Mel also got the medium for Dave), which is about the size of one of those protein shaker bottles.

MudBuster goes by a dog’s paw size, rather than by weight, to help you figure out which is the correct fit among small, medium, and large sizes.

With the MudBuster, you insert the paw and twist back and forth (similar to how you use the Paw Plunger). Again, we tried both directions (up and down and side to side), and it worked fine both ways. Also, with the medium MudBuster, we used about 20 ounces of water, so this device is significantly less water-intensive than the Paw Plunger. The MudBuster was easy to rinse out, and I laid the bristle mat flat on a towel to air-dry it.

Neither dog was resistant to the dip-and-wipe process of the MudBuster.

“The MudBuster is far easier to use than the Paw Plunger, and seemed like it took off just as much filth,” Mel said.

A paw washer isn’t really better than a towel

Buddy and Dave both tolerated the paw washers fairly well. The process was a little awkward at first, but with a fairly quick toe dip and wipe, they were on their way. Prepping ahead was key, to ensure room-temperature water was already in the washer; that meant filling the washer from a water bottle when we were on the go.

If we had to choose one plastic paw-cleaning device, it would be the MudBuster—due to its size, portability, and water usage alone. Yet even though it cleans dirty paws a bit faster than a damp rag, we still don’t think it’s better.

Vets agree. “It’s as simple as just a clean dish towel, sometimes with a little warm water, just to wipe them down. And that’s sufficient,” Amy Nichelason, DVM and professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, told Mel in a phone interview.

Once the MudBuster was set up, it cleaned our dogs’ paws more quickly, and the silicone scrubbing pad made fast work of the muck between their toes. However, this device wasn’t so fast that we think it’s worth the effort of carrying around the container or trying to fill it while keeping a filthy dog from escaping your grip and jumping on the furniture. And you might still have to clean their undercarriage with a rag anyway.

You can’t really see what’s happening to your dog’s paw once it’s inserted into either of these paw washers. So we would caution against using this product if your dog has cracked nails or foot pads. Buddy had a cracked dew claw that became worse after using the devices. We think this is an edge case, and we can’t directly attribute it to either product. But the advantage of using a towel or wipes is that you have the opportunity to visually inspect your dog’s feet for any damage.

If you need to clean your pet’s paws while you’re on the go, you can put a wet rag in a zip-top bag and a dry one in another bag; this is a much more efficient and compact option than either of the dedicated paw cleaners. Although it sometimes takes a few swipes to get the job done with a wet cloth, we think this is a cheaper, low-impact way to clean up those paws.

As for the Frito toes: In our experience, only wet wipes help with that.
