Mazatlan & Sunwing offer up authentic Mexico experience on high-energy mega fam

MAZATLAN — Sunwing is the biggest vacation provider for Canadians travelling to Mazatlan and Mexico is its second most popular destination. No wonder the travel company went all out to showcase this destination for more than 160 travel agents and trade media on its first ever Mazatlan mega fam.

Mazatlan may not be on the radar for every beach-bound client, but it will be soon, especially considering the full range of Sunwing experiences available in destination.

Some 161 of Sunwing’s top-selling agents from Toronto and Montreal flew to Mazatlan to check out the resorts, the attractions and, of course, the beaches, along with representatives from Sunwing, onboard Sunwing’s new Boeing 737 MAX 8 airplane.

Sunwing is doing its part to provide opportunities for Canadian travellers to discover Mazatlan. Back in July the company announced brand new direct weekly flights to Mazatlan out of Montreal, operating on Tuesdays.

Sunwing’s new Boeing 737 MAX 8 lands in Mazatlan

It’s the only direct flight to this destination from Montreal. The weekly service starts Dec. 18 and runs until April 16, and clients can take advantage of vacation packages too. With the new service Quebecers have access to direct flights to 27 sun destinations across the Caribbean, Mexico, Florida and Central America from Montreal this winter with Sunwing.

With the introduction of Sunwing’s new direct flight service from Montreal this coming winter, Sunwing will be offering Mazatlan from eight different airports coast to coast, says Andrew Dawson, Chief Operating Officer for Sunwing Travel Group.

Mazatlan is already a very stable draw from Western Canada, benefitting from proximity on the west coast.

Destination weddings in Mazatlan are also very popular for Sunwing, because it’s a relatively affordable destination, making it ideal for groups.

Mazatlan Views

What sets Mazatlan apart as a destination from other Mexican hotspots? One differentiator is the people, and how nice and friendly they are in Mazatlan. It goes a long way and makes a huge difference in respect to having an ideal vacation experience.

Surprisingly, one niche that may especially enjoy Mazatlan is baseball fans, as the destination offers the opportunity for a unique baseball experience. Baseball is the most popular sport around these parts and Mazatlan, a city of approximately 650,000 people along the Pacific shoreline in the state of Sinaloa, has had its own Mexican Pacific League team – the Venados de Mazatlan – since 1945.

The 2005 and 2016 Caribbean Series champions opened their regular season this past Sunday, while the fam group was still in town, at a brand new 16,000-seat stadium. Understandably there was a crowd of locals buying team gear the night before at the Gran Plaza Mazatlan.

Sports enthusiasts may also be interested in the annual Great Pacific Marathon Mazatlan. The 20th edition runs Dec. 1 and 2. The Malecon (Seawall) de Mazatlan is currently undergoing a major rebuild and it’s looking as if the rebuild will be complete in time for the marathon. There’s even free WiFi at certain spots along the Malecon, as well as in some squares and other public places.

Culture lovers will adore Mazatlan too. The town is definitely worth exploring with history aplenty, plus there are many museums, galleries, cafés and even an opera house, and those on the Sunwing Mazatlan fam had the pleasure of attending a performance.

Visitors should also be sure to check out Machado Square in the evening where they will find locals socializing, having drinks and enjoying live entertainment.

Here’s what we heard from the locals: what sets Mazatlan apart in Mexico is that it’s a good, affordable destination that represents real Mexico and offers an authentic Mexican vacation, something that’s much in demand right now.

While in Mazatlan the fam group stayed at Riu Emerald Bay. The resort is one of many offered by Sunwing in the destination. Earlier this week Sunwing announced it will offer agents double STAR points on all new bookings to Mazatlan made from now until Oct. 23, for departures Nov. 1, 2018 to April 30, 2019.

Noe helped us schedule our Deep Sea Fishing adventure AND helped us to have the head chef cook the Marlin we caught! He helped us find taxis and excursions that were right for us. Most (if not all) Sunwing excursions pick you up right at the front doors so it was easy to relax and have a good time. Thank you Noe!

We where in vacations visiting from Montreal Canada for one week from the 07 to 14 January 2020 in Mazatlán We stayed at the Riu.(excellent view of the beach!! Nice hotel, nice beach and friendly staff Food was excellent. We took a couple of excursion 1. To the town of Copala with Nexus tours Our guide was Roberto and our driver was Joel Super tour people!! very friendly and knowledgeable!!. I was very happy with the place’s visited Thank you Roberto. 2. We also booked next day our tour to the city of Mazatlán with the same company at our Hotel Our guide chilly Willy ( Juan Antonio) And our driver the one and only David( love this guy very cool!!) Guys !! we had a really good time !! History of the city..this make us appreciate our tour 🤗the opera house is a must!! Friends this people is very friendly and honest And the one thing that impressed the most !! Was that Their knowledge of the city and the love they have for what they do.. A big thank you for one of the best vacations!! 😎🇲🇽 A place to revisit for sure!! José Ayala 🇨🇦

Absolutely terrible experience with Nexus tours company operating at Royalton Riviera Cancun. We were waiting with the child for 15 minutes at the gate and no one came. Bell boys told us we have to run to Nexus office and escalate directly and they were no help either. If the bus comes while we are running - it’s our responsibility. So finally we came to Nexus Tours office where we have learned from their rep Azuel that Nexus is not responsible for the tours which they book. Money refund is not immediate and they demanded to take the original receipt leaving us with no evidence that we had paid. They did not care about warning us that the excursion was cancelled half an hour BEFORE pick up time and lied that they called us to the room. We had still been in the room and no one called or left a message. No one cared to come to the gate and warn us about the cancellation either. All they were doing was finger pointing saying it’s no one at Nexus responsible for this so called “sale service”. I will cancel all purchased excursions through them and will try to research for a better and more responsible tour company. If I could give them ZERO I would.

He was in charge to fix my transportation on the way back to the airport, i have an issue with the hotel about the room and he gently fix the situation for me! I bought 2 excursions for the dolphins activity and the chichen itza tour, the price was very competitive, and the guy makes many call to give me all the details, like the fee dock etc... He even come on bike under a raining day, to give me a voucher for a tour city guide. If you’re in stay in cancun for holidays then this is the guy you to deal with!!! Sunwing Introduces Quebec City-Mazatlán Service

The Pacific coast of Mexico will be a little closer to residents of Quebec City and the surrounding region with the introduction of Sunwing’s new weekly direct flight service to Mazatlán.

Sunwing is launching the first-ever flight service from Quebec City Tuesdays starting Dec. 17 until April 14, 2020 (inclusive).

Known as the “Pearl of the Pacific,” Mazatlán is famous for its picturesque coastal landscapes and neoclassical architecture. Travellers can spend their days strolling down the cobblestone streets of Old Mazatlán or climbing the lighthouse for unrivalled Pacific ocean views.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming tourists from Quebec City on the first-ever direct flight service to México’s Only Colonial City on the Beach, a destination with a beautiful mixture of real Mexico culture and 20 km of swimmable beaches,” said Julio Birrueta, director of the Mazatlán Tourism Board. “Guests will not only have the opportunity to enjoy great seafood, regional cuisine and a wide variety of activities and local tours, but they will also find authentic hospitality from the local mazatlecos.”

Travellers can choose from a range of resort options in Mazatlán, including the newly renovated Riu Emerald Bay, a popular choice for families, El Cid Castilla Beach and Playa Mazatlan Beach Hotel.

Sun-seekers can also enjoy a host of benefits when they book their tropical getaway before Sept. 6 for travel between Dec. 18 and April 30, 2020.

Travelling with Sunwing. Should we pre-book an excursion or wait until we get to the resort to see what is available?

If its offered on the plane, but it as it is much cheaper than when you are at the hotel

I did not precook. You may want to consider alternate excursion group who have a table near the main desk and were more reasonable in price.

Excursions are cheaper bought in Canada or on Sunwings plane before landing. Going downtown is easy the local bus runs in front of hotel and is very cheap. ask front desk for name of bus. Remember the name and colour of bus so you can jump on or off along the way. Use it at least one day to see marina area or restaurants and shopping downtown. Get small pesos from reception.for several trips extras can be tips.

If you have your bathing suit under loose cloths you can use beaches and ocean down town. The surf is not so strong and islands break the wind and waves. Its a long beach and you can always buy a drink or ice cream along the way.

It depends on the date you are travelling. If it's during peak season travel, I would book prior to getting to the resort. If it's before peak season, wait until you get to the resort, you can usually negotiate a better deal (Just remember to print out the excursion rates from Sun Wing so you know what rates to negotiate from). Be sure to check out the Light House, the views are awesome - But wear great walking shoes & take plenty of water, it is a hike up the pathway to walk to the top of the Light House. Have Fun!! On the plane the offered price is Canadian funds but at the hotel you buy it in american funds

Personally I did not take any excursions but some in our group did, one through Sunwing booked at the hotel, another group booked a tour from an operator on the beach for about 1/2 the price. both groups had a great time.

Although I would strongly recommend pre-booking your in-flight meals, they are actually fairly decent.

And you will get them quite promptly once the plane is in the air

I would not prebook. They are way more expensive through Sunwing. Mazatlan people are very trustworthy, ask around!

Pre book as much as possible. Once you are at the resort all bookings are at the US rate. Booking on the plane is easy and much cheaper.

We did not go on any tours , were busy with family, but talking to some who did , they say Sunwwingsprices were comparable. We went on our own to the Malecon, Old town & Church , the green bus , front of the gates of Riu , 11 pesos per person each way all the way to the Old Market. Deep sea fishing was said to be not good because of the winds. Shallow fishing was OK .Cheers , Enjoy UR Holiday .

Sunwing at resort just want to Sell Tours.and will push on the transfer bus... you can purchase with any others at desks in lobby,for less.lits less if you book with Locals,, down the beach by shops.

We stayed at the RIU in Emerald Bay in January 2019. During the trip from airport to the resort on the bus the Sunning people distribute brochures with excursions. Then at the resort you book whatever you want from that offer. Process are in US dollars.

I would say it depends on what you want to do. If you want a city tour, hire a taxi or even take the bus. The old city is very cool, with classic spanish architecture, narrow streets and lots of interesting shops. The market in the old town was really neat as well. To be honest, the new part of the city is a bit of a dump. For golfing excursions, wait til you get there. As with any tour company, Sunwing's pitch involves a bit of a fear factor. It's a tourist town and like anywhere else, if you go looking for trouble, you'll probably find it but if you're comfortable with a bit of Spanish and can read a map, you should be fine. It's a fun and relaxing place. Enjoy yourself!

Pre book you get a better price. You can book on the plane also if you want .
