The Grand Tour hosts wanted total ‘control’ of how the show ends

Richard hammond speaks with yahoo uk about the prime video series almost reaching the end of the road.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Sticking the landing is difficult to achieve in the entertainment industry, and more often than not shows can outstay their welcome and end things on a sour note — but not The Grand Tour , not on Richard Hammond , Jeremy Clarkson and James May ’s watch.

Hammond spoke with Yahoo UK about bringing the series to a close for Origin Story , and he admits it was always the plan to end it “when, where and how” they wanted. This begins with the Prime Video show’s penultimate special Sand Job , which premiered on the platform on Friday, 16 February.

“The key thing on that whole issue, [is] we had decided years ago that we wanted to be in control,” Hammond explains.

“Having set off on this incredible adventure that none of us thought would ever come our way, we all wanted to be the ones —and I don't just mean us three, all of us— to decide when and where and how we landed it, and we have done. But that isn't uppermost in our minds yet because we haven't finished.”

That’s because Hammond, Clarkson and May are very much still hard at work on their final special for The Grand Tour. The final farewell will see the trio travel to Zimbabwe for one last adventure, and although filming finished last year it isn’t yet the end for them.

“We've worked together a very long time and been lucky to share some simply incredible experiences that none of us ever thought would come our way,” Hammond adds. “And not just share them with our mates but share them with a global audience which, again, we never thought we'd have the opportunity to do.

“We're still right now in the process of doing that, these films are enormous, and they are films really.

"We're an enormous crew, it's a huge combined effort to make that so when we bring back the thousands of hours of footage, when we call wrap at the end of the shoot, that isn't the end of the job.” Richard Hammond

Hammond explains that it is “a huge process” to deliver the high quality shows that fans are accustomed to. That means the trio —who became iconic after their time presenting on Top Gear together before they moved on to The Grand Tour— have a lot to do before they look towards what’s next.

“It's still a huge process to get it assembled and made before it's done, so we're still in that process,” he says. “We're delivering this one [as] it's all come together and finally the voiceovers [are] down and the picture is graded, locked and delivered.

“Then for a while we're gonna be sitting back, desperate to see what do people think, ‘did it work? Did we capture the spirit where we went?’ So that'll occupy us for a while yet.” Richard Hammond

Hammond goes on: “We're still in the process of making the next one, we've shot it but we're gonna [finish] it. That will occupy us, so really our attention hasn't turned to anything that follows until we get there.”

The Grand Tour: Sand Job is out now on Prime Video, the show’s final special will air on the streamer later this year.

Key Takeaways:

  • End of The Grand Tour: Jeremy Clarkson, along with co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May , will no longer film new series of The Grand Tour after next year, following a decision by Amazon Prime’s executives. This marks the end of a popular show that started in 2016 and quickly garnered a devoted fanbase.
  • Fan Reactions and Future Prospects: Fans expressed their disappointment and gratitude on social media, reflecting on the impact the show had on their lives. Despite the end of this era, there’s speculation that Amazon Prime may revive The Grand Tour with new hosts, a move reportedly welcomed by the current presenters.

the grand tour views

TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson, renowned for his role in the popular car show The Grand Tour alongside Richard Hammond and James May, has recently spoken about the future of the series. The show, which began on Amazon Prime in 2016, has been a fan favourite but will see no further series after next year. This decision, made by the streaming platform’s bosses, brings an end to a series that has been both entertaining and influential for car enthusiasts.

Clarkson shared his thoughts on Instagram, stating:

“Been a busy day. No more Grand Tour after next year but a LOT more Clarkson’s Farm. Which, this evening, is looking extremely lovely.”

This post quickly became a hub for fans to express their feelings about the series ending. The emotional reactions ranged from sadness over the show’s conclusion to appreciation for the years of entertainment it provided.

One fan commented:

“Please start a podcast with the three of you, it can just be called the news and you rant for an hour about cars.”

Others expressed their gratitude:

“The end of Clarkson, Hammond and May in whatever it’s called is a sad day. Thank you for everything you did for petrolheads. And now farmheads!”

The influence of the trio was evident in another fan’s words:

“It’s really nice coming to the comments and seeing how these 3 impacted the lives of so many. These lads got me through countless dark times with laughter and endless banter. We all knew the day was coming, and the truest of fans will wish you, Hammond, May, and indeed all of the crew that made the magic happen the absolute best in the next stage. Thank you for inspiring countless enthusiasts around the world.”

Despite Clarkson’s announcement, there’s talk that Amazon Prime might continue The Grand Tour with new hosts. An insider revealed:

“It’s a surprising decision and everyone realises it very much marks the end of an era for the three presenters.”

This potential revival aligns with the presenters’ acceptance of passing the torch to a new generation.

“The Grand Tour is one of Prime Video’s most watched shows and Jeremy, James and Richard have a devoted following. But the guys have made no bones about the fact they’re all advancing in years and they have lots of other projects to pursue,” a source informed The Sun. “They just felt like the time was right and wanted to go out on a high when the show remained popular.”

As fans prepare to bid farewell to this iconic trio, they can look forward to two more special episodes of The Grand Tour, showcasing the team’s adventures in Mauritania and Zimbabwe. This farewell follows their departure from Top Gear in 2015, after a disagreement with producers.

Beginning in the late sixteenth century, it became fashionable for young aristocrats to visit Paris, Venice, Florence, and above all Rome, as the culmination of their classical education. Thus was born the idea of the Grand Tour, a practice that introduced Englishmen, Germans, Scandinavians, and also Americans to the art and culture of France and Italy for the next 300 years. Travel was arduous and costly throughout the period, possible only for a privileged class—the same that produced gentleman scientists, authors, antiquaries, and patrons of the arts.

The Objectives of the Grand Tour The Grand Tourist was typically a young man with a thorough grounding in Greek and Latin literature as well as some leisure time, some means, and some interest in art. The German traveler Johann Joachim Winckelmann pioneered the field of art history with his comprehensive study of Greek and Roman sculpture ; he was portrayed by his friend Anton Raphael Mengs at the beginning of his long residence in Rome ( 48.141 ). Most Grand Tourists, however, stayed for briefer periods and set out with less scholarly intentions, accompanied by a teacher or guardian, and expected to return home with souvenirs of their travels as well as an understanding of art and architecture formed by exposure to great masterpieces.

London was a frequent starting point for Grand Tourists, and Paris a compulsory destination; many traveled to the Netherlands, some to Switzerland and Germany, and a very few adventurers to Spain, Greece, or Turkey. The essential place to visit, however, was Italy. The British traveler Charles Thompson spoke for many Grand Tourists when in 1744 he described himself as “being impatiently desirous of viewing a country so famous in history, which once gave laws to the world; which is at present the greatest school of music and painting, contains the noblest productions of statuary and architecture, and abounds with cabinets of rarities , and collections of all kinds of antiquities.” Within Italy, the great focus was Rome, whose ancient ruins and more recent achievements were shown to every Grand Tourist. Panini’s Ancient Rome ( 52.63.1 ) and Modern Rome ( 52.63.2 ) represent the sights most prized, including celebrated Greco-Roman statues and views of famous ruins, fountains, and churches. Since there were few museums anywhere in Europe before the close of the eighteenth century, Grand Tourists often saw paintings and sculptures by gaining admission to private collections, and many were eager to acquire examples of Greco-Roman and Italian art for their own collections. In England, where architecture was increasingly seen as an aristocratic pursuit, noblemen often applied what they learned from the villas of Palladio in the Veneto and the evocative ruins of Rome to their own country houses and gardens .

The Grand Tour and the Arts Many artists benefited from the patronage of Grand Tourists eager to procure mementos of their travels. Pompeo Batoni painted portraits of aristocrats in Rome surrounded by classical staffage ( 03.37.1 ), and many travelers bought Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s prints of Roman views, including ancient structures like the Colosseum ( 59.570.426 ) and more recent monuments like the Piazza del Popolo ( 37.45.3[49] ), the dazzling Baroque entryway to Rome. Some Grand Tourists invited artists from home to accompany them throughout their travels, making views specific to their own itineraries; the British artist Richard Wilson, for example, made drawings of Italian places while traveling with the earl of Dartmouth in the mid-eighteenth century ( 1972.118.294 ).

Classical taste and an interest in exotic customs shaped travelers’ itineraries as well as their reactions. Gothic buildings , not much esteemed before the late eighteenth century, were seldom cause for long excursions, while monuments of Greco-Roman antiquity, the Italian Renaissance, and the classical Baroque tradition received praise and admiration. Jacques Rigaud’s views of Paris were well suited to the interests of Grand Tourists, displaying, for example, the architectural grandeur of the Louvre, still a royal palace, and the bustle of life along the Seine ( 53.600.1191 ;  53.600.1175 ). Canaletto’s views of Venice ( 1973.634 ;  1988.162 ) were much prized, and other works appealed to Northern travelers’ interest in exceptional fêtes and customs: Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo ‘s Burial of Punchinello ( 1975.1.473 ), for instance, is peopled with characters from the Venetian carnival, and a print by Francesco Piranesi and Louis Jean Desprez depicts the Girandola, a spectacular fireworks display held at the Castel Sant’Angelo ( 69.510 ).

The Grand Tour and Neoclassical Taste The Grand Tour gave concrete form to northern Europeans’ ideas about the Greco-Roman world and helped foster Neoclassical ideals . The most ambitious tourists visited excavations at such sites as Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Tivoli, and purchased antiquities to decorate their homes. The third duke of Beaufort brought from Rome the third-century work named the Badminton Sarcophagus ( 55.11.5 ) after the house where he proudly installed it in Gloucestershire. The dining rooms of Robert Adam’s interiors typically incorporated classical statuary; the nine lifesized figures set in niches in the Lansdowne dining room ( 32.12 ) were among the many antiquities acquired by the second earl of Shelburne, whose collecting activities accelerated after 1771, when he visited Italy and met Gavin Hamilton, a noted antiquary and one of the first dealers to take an interest in Attic ceramics, then known as “Etruscan vases.” Early entrepreneurs recognized opportunities created by the culture of the Grand Tour: when the second duchess of Portland obtained a Roman cameo glass vase in a much-publicized sale, Josiah Wedgwood profited from the manufacture of jasper reproductions ( 94.4.172 ).

If the show isn’t received well, the viewer figures will plummet much quicker – such as the 4.4 million to 2.8 million drop we saw in the first and second episode of Top Gear Series 23 with Chris Evans. Ouch.

So how did Top Gear Series 23 perform? Well, a bit like this

As you can see, Series 24 opened with an average of 2.8 million viewers, before gradually falling to to 2.4 million by Episode 4 , spiking to 2.6 for Episode 5 . A possible explanation for the further reduction seen in Episodes 6 & 7 is that they aired after Top Gear went on break for a week, meaning some viewers may have thought the show had finished early or they simply lost interest.

So how does that compare to The Grand Tour ? Well unfortunately for us, Amazon haven’t released the full list of viewer statistics for the show, but there is one statistic we have heard – by December 2016 approximately 2.3 million people had streamed the first episode of the show . It is important to note that this figure was determined by research company GfK – from a survey of viewers who fill in a diary of what they watch every day – so it is far from being an official figure.

Depending on how you interpret the viewing figures for The Grand Tour ‘s first episode, it either attracted less viewers than Top Gear Series 24’s opening episode, or at least was pretty much on-par with it. The figures also would have reduced further as each episode was released.

Unless Amazon changes their policy and decides to release final viewer figures for The Grand Tour , we can’t really give either show the win here.

The episode ratings

Here on TopGearbox, every single episode of Top Gear and The Grand Tour carries with it a ‘Star Rating’ from 1 to 10, which are determined by hundreds of thousands of votes placed by readers just like you. Aside from being an easy way to find quality episodes worth watching, they give us a handy point of reference to see how the shows stack up against each other.

Top Gear Series 24’s highest rated episode is currently Episode 7 , with a rating of 9.4 out of 10 . On the other end of the scale, Episode 3 faired the worst, with a rating of just 6.9 out of 10 – one of the worst on record.

On the other hand, The Grand Tour ‘s highest rated episode is Episode 13 , with a rating of 9.5 out of 10 . And the lowest – ‘Italian Lessons’ – still managed to achieve a decent 7.8 out of 10 .

If you take an average of the ratings for every episode in the series, Top Gear achieved an overall score of 7.88 out of 10 , vs The Grand Tour on 8.63 out of 10 . So as far as our readers are concerned, The Grand Tour has won this one – just!

Our opinion

We love Clarkson, Hammond and May as much as all of you do, but we are the first to admit that while The Grand Tour did have moments of greatness, the show as a whole wasn’t exactly their finest hour. Let us put it like this – here at TopGearbox we’ve watched all of the older Top Gear episodes many, many times over because of how much we enjoyed them.

But The Grand Tour ? Once was enough for us, thanks.

the grand tour views

Many of the boy’s “adventures” felt unrealistic, as if you were watching a B-grade action movie which desperately wants you to believe everything is real. We also felt the hosts (especially Hammond and May) were putting on an act, as we’ve never seen Hammond that argumentative or May being as much of a bumbling idiot as what we saw on The Grand Tour .

On the other side, while we enjoyed Series 24 of Top Gear slightly more than The Grand Tour , it too was far from perfect. While the chemistry between LeBlanc, Harris and Reid shows some promise, LeBlanc is still a bit too wooden in the studio, Reid’s jokes sometimes fall flat and Harris is always looking for an argument. But thankfully the stunning cinematography remained, combined with a bunch of interesting road trips, challenges and car reviews throughout the series.

And the verdict?

Well, do we really need to choose?

the grand tour views

Whether you prefer the newly revamped Top Gear or the behermoth that is The Grand Tour , there’s one thing you need to remember – and that is competition is a good thing. It is Mercedes-Benz vs BMW, Ford vs Chevrolet, Coke vs Pepsi, Apple vs Samsung, PS4 vs…. well, you get the idea.

When it comes to anything at all, a bit of friendly competition means people strive to try harder than what they otherwise might have done. Competition keeps people and companies on their toes and performing at their best of their abilities, and you can be certain that the respective production teams at Top Gear and The Grand Tour are doing absolutely everything they can to compete with and out-do each other in every regard.

If Top Gear were to ever be cancelled in the near future, the team over at The Grand Tour suddenly wouldn’t have to try as hard to succeed in the future. While this might not be apparent or affect the show immediately, over time stagnation could set in and everybody loses.

So let us all enjoy the fact that we have access to two highly polished and refined car shows to entertain ourselves with – and they’ve even been thoughtfully staggered to air at alternate times of the year. This means there will be less down-time between shows, more quality car content for you and also more variety to enjoy.

How good is that?

the show is about entertianment . and about the crazy things they will do with cars. while still talking about the cars. if you need all the specs about every car look at google. and if you dont like them then quit watching and whining like a bunch of little bitches. and yes im american. (o)(o)s are awsome. courtesy of the USofA

' src=

I miis the old Top Gear. I dont have Amazon and the new Amazon is more like Geordie Shiore on wheels Pitty

' src=

More Americans have seen Grand Tour than old or new Top Gear UK because it’s on Amazon Prime. BBC programs are not on basic cable. Most people don’t have BBC World…..only the programs that are aired by PBS here. Clarkson, Hammond and May are very unique presenters…….wide variety of interests and knowledge. I am older than they are but I enjoy their programs…. I keep finding new things they have made all the time. Today I rewatched James May on the Moon and James May The Edge of Space….fantastic! Tomorrow I shall rewatch some of Hammond’s Blast Lab…love seeing “Oliver”. Where are those kids now.. Check out Clarkson’s PQ17: An Arctic Convoy Disaster.

' src=

Phew it’s not just me then, the current Top Gear looks cheap ,naff and dull as dishwater. Even Dr Who? is more entertaining due to being so bad its funny at least.

' src=

In all honesty the New Top Gear is a sleeping pill and as entertaining as watching your dog licking his balls. utter rubish, nothing is natural and all TG is now doing a very bad job of imitating what was. face the truth, why not both? because after watching TG you feel like the time was stolen from your life

' src=

I’m a fan of the old Top Gear and followed Clarkson, Hammond, and May to Amazon’s Grand Tour. Today I decided to watch a few episodes (season 25) of the new TG to compare.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May are like schoolboy or university friends doing pranks, road trips, and adventures together. They’re rude. They’re outrageous. They are very entertaining. They give us modern day vaudeville comedy.

The new TG (season 25) seemed forced. Stiff. Flat humor. Written by people who don’t understand their audience. Welcome to the politically correct humorless and very much dead Top Gear. Perhaps the show should be renamed First Gear because it’s slow and boring.

' src=

Can you update this. Just watched Xmas Top Gear with the Xmas trees…. Utter rubbish!

' src=

The real debate, which was better. Top Gear until Clarkson left or The Grand-tour. Viewers ratings alone make Top Gear the best. Anyway time to put both shows to bed, they’ve had their day.

' src=

The report claims that Amazon Prime Video drew over five million people to the Prime subscription service by early 2017. It also calculates that around 26 million US Prime members watched television and movies on the service by 2017.

' src=

Very good and honest article. One thing everyone has to remember is The Grand Tour will evolve to be better than Top Gear, you see a vast improvement with Series 2 over Series 1 already, because they actually listen to their fans. Clarkson has an undeniable gift & genius developing motoring shows, The Top Gear reboot that premiered 2002 was Clarkson’s brain child. If you pay attention from Series 1-3, they are good but series 4 is really where they found their niche’ and the show hit it’s stride. With Hammond & May’s obvious loyalty to Clarkson, and Clarkson’ s vision with executive Producer Andy Wilhelm on the team, combined with a very outrageous production budget curtousy of Amazon, how could it be anything but? I agree their rilvery and situations seemed over the top and scripted but it will all come together.

' src=

I basically agree with most of the above. But not that TGT is better. the old trio has many years of chemistry to lean on and heaps of money for the new show. Im VERY surprised TGT season 1 was so outright “bad” (personal opinion!), but yeah, TGT season 2 vas an improvement. And maybe s3 will be even better since they prolly have more freedom for change acc to what viewers want then the new TG presentors who needs to “build chemistry” but obviously has a much better production team then TGT.

Im guessing that letting the trio on the lose without a leash is not the best idea. Im guessing that on old TG the experienced prod.team gave the trio a good frame to stay in.

One thing tho – the old trio as presenters are better (due to fore mentioned chemistry) but are clearly growing old. It shows. not saying its bad yet, but im really hoping for some new personality on the field soon. Im glad the TG clown is gone, Matt LB is good but “stiff”, and unlike some above i think Sabine is VERY good! Not perfect yet but better then the rest of TG.

Favourite episode: mopeds through Thailand! by far!!!

' src=

Clearly TGT needed some time to get ”in to it” They had some parts in the show that was just a failure but hard to change after the whole series has been recorded. But don’t forget the most important issues here. There is a huge list of things TGT is not allowed to do since they are still under some kind of contract with the BBC. BCC will sew the crap out of them if they come with a stig or a reasonable priced car etc etc.. Second issue is that Amazone probbably wants to have something to say in the show. (explaining the NOT FUNNY AT ALL american testdriver for example) 3rd issue is they are kind of locked inside the Amazone network. You must pay to be able to see them. I became a member of Amazone just to see TGT while Top Gear is there for free on BBC. Taking all these things in account TGT is the HUGE winner here unless you don’t WANT to see that and actually want Top Gear to be the favourite..

' src=

I like this review. Hit the nail on the head.

' src=

As this was the second series of Top Gear sans Clarkson et al, while I like where this comparison is going, I think I would like to see Series 2 of TGT vs. Series 2 of New Top Gear. We all know some of the segments in Series 1 of The Grand Tour didn’t work and I’m expecting better from Series 2 much like TG made changes for their second run at it. My 2c.

Good Point.

' src=

Agree… Last Top gear was better then with that redhead clown, but LeBlanc, Harris and Reid together got ZERO charisma and the interviews with guests are just SAD… if not pathetic… BBC clearly running out of money, mostly just 2 presenters on trips, making Harris doing the guests drives, that annoying german woman as a Stig and semi-retarded Eddie on top of that… GT on the other hand, was too much YANKEE style show… clearly they have been aiming for simply audience too aka americans… screenplays were not the best too… but as was mentioned before : we must wait for one or two more series to make proper battle…

TG will never be the same as it was, and GT will never be as good as old TG was neither…

Of course english fanboys will always love that new Top Gear… for simply reason : they are paying for that through TV licence… 😉

btw watching BBC News time to time.. I feel sorry for taxpayers paying for that zion-propaganda news… so its still way better to pay for `wooden` Top Gear then… 😉

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

The Grand Tour’s fate ‘revealed’ after Jeremy Clarkson’s exit in final episode

Jeremy Clarkson

The Grand Tour has reportedly been given a huge lifeline, with plans to develop a fresh version without Jeremy Clarkson .

The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host, 63, and his co-stars Richard Hammond and James May have filmed their final special of the Amazon Prime series, after it was revealed in November that it was coming to an end.

The trio, who first hit our screens together in 2003 on  Top Gear , announced their exit from the series in November last year, however, it could be coming back with a fresh presenting team.

According to reports, Studio Lambert – the production company who brought us The Traitors and Squid Game: The Challenge – has landed the contract to develop a fresh version of the motoring show.

An ‘update to the format’ is being prepped with new presenting talent, although has not been formally greenlit, Broadcast claims.

Clarkson, Hammond and May first launched the series in 2016, with their penultimate episode The Sand Job having aired earlier this year following a trip to Mauritania, and a final in Zimbabwe yet to reach our screens.

As the news of The Grand Tour coming to a grinding halt was announced in November, it was said to be ‘the end of an era’.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May

A source revealed at the time: ‘It’s a surprising decision and everyone realises it very much marks the end of an era for the three presenters.

‘The Grand Tour is one of Prime Video’s most watched shows and Jeremy, James and Richard have a devoted following.’

The insider continued to  The Sun : ‘But the guys have made no bones about the fact they’re all advancing in years and they have lots of other projects to pursue.

‘They just felt like the time was right and wanted to go out on a high when the show remained popular.’

But, it may not be the end of Clarkson, Hammond, 54, and May, 61, on our screens together.

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

When asked if they’d reunite on another project, May said: ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, but you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit.

‘We’ve got two (episodes) in the bag, there’s one coming out very soon, and another coming out a bit after that, but what happens between now and then we’ll have to wait and see.’

Clarkson also spoke about The Grand Tour ending and branded himself ‘unfit, fat and old’ when speaking about why he was done with the ‘immensely physical’ show.

‘I’ve driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else,’ he told The Times.

‘We’ve done everything you can do with a car.

‘When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air.’

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

The future of The Grand Tour was thrown into doubt following Clarkson’s vile comments in a newspaper column about Meghan Markle  in January 2023, in which the broadcaster said he dreamed of the Duchess being paraded through the streets and publicly shamed.

It became Ipso’s most complained-about article after its publication, receiving more than 25,100 complaints, with Clarkson later issuing a lengthy apology to the Suits actress and her husband Prince Harry, and claims emerged that  Amazon reportedly ‘parted ways’ with him .

Meanwhile, Clarkson’s adventures at his Diddly Squat farm will continue to air on Amazon Prime for season four, while the third instalment of Clarkson’s Farm premieres next month.

Metro.co.uk has approached Studio Lambert for comment.

The Grand Tour is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

5 Things We’d Like to See on Shakira’s ‘Las Mujeres Ya No lloran’ Tour: The Dream Setlist & More

Shakira

Shakira did not lie when she announced on social media: “se viene la loba” (the she wolf is coming). The Colombian superstar unveiled the dates to the North American leg of her 2024 Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour on Tuesday (April 16), just on the heels of revealing the big news during her surprise stop at Coachella over the weekend.

The tour, in support of her new album of the same name, will kick off Nov. 2 in Palm Desert, California, and wrap on Dec. 15 in Detroit, Michigan. During the 14-arena trek, she will also visit Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City, to name a few. (Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on April 22, here ).

Shakira first shared the news on Friday (April 12) at Coachella, where she was a surprise guest during Bizarrap’s debut performance. Right after performing “La Fuerte” and before singing “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” (her two collaborative efforts with the Argentine hitmaker), she said:  “I have to share something today. Biza, I’m going on tour. I’m going on tour, finally…starting here, this November, this year, this city. I can’t wait. Couldn’t ask for more.”

The tour — which marks her first since her 2018 El Dorado World Tour — is in support of her 12th studio album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums and Latin Pop Albums charts (dated April 6), as well as No. 13 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.

As we patiently wait for the fall to come around, Billboard has curated five things we would like to see on Shakira’s new tour.

The Grand Opening

Shakira

If “La Loba se viene” is any indication, it only makes sense that Shakira starts off her concerts performing a bilingual version of “Loba” (“She Wolf”). Her 2009 banger, which entered many Billboard charts, including the Hot 100, Hot Latin Songs and Tropical Songs, is the ultimate dance track perfect to set the mood for the rest of the night. “She Wolf” also represents what Shakira embodies: a woman with strong family values, resilience and strength. Now, if she can arrive singing the song on top of a large wolf on the stage — that’d be extra epic!

The 1990s Medley

Shakira

It’s no surprise that Shakira will perform all of her latest hits live for the first time. We’re expecting to sing and dance to songs such as “Te Felicito,” “Monotonía,” “Copa Vacía,” and “Puntería” — all from her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran album. But we’re also hoping for a ride down memory lane.

We’re specifically crossing fingers for a throwback medley set — where she will perform some of her melancholy rock tunes from the ‘90s. Our dream version of it would include “Ciega, Sordomuda,” “Ojos Así,” “Estoy Aquí,” “Inevitable,” and “Antologia,” to name a few.

Surprise Guests

Shakira and Cardi B

Now, we know Shakira can dominate the stage and sell out arenas on her own, but it would also be nice to see her bring out some surprise guests. Some we would especially like to see her join the stage are Alejandro Sanz, for an epic performance of “La Tortura” and “Te Lo Agradezco Pero No,” Karol G for the ultra-powerful “TQG,” Cardi B for their flirtatious and feel-good “Puntería” — and why not? Beyoncé (“Beautiful Liar”) and/or Rihanna (“Can’t Remember to Forget You”) as well.

Her Talented Offspring

Shakira

Another sweet moment on the tour would be if Shakira invites her talented sons onstage. The two boys first showed off their singing skills on the heartfelt tune “Acróstico” (third single off Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran ), where they collaborated with their mom. Her older son, Milan, has also been spotted on social media performing with his school band, where he plays the drums.

The Grand Finale

Bizarrap, Shakira

And, because Shakira made her tour announcement during Bizarrap’s Coachella set, it only makes sense that she invites him on stage (if possible for the entire tour) to close off the show with their 2023 banger “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.” The track peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100 and landed at No. 2 on both the Billboard Global 200 and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts. It also ruled the Hot Latin Songs chart, scoring Shakira her 12th leader on the tally.

Zendaya’s Venus & Serena Williams Homage Is a Grand Slam

Zendaya in Carolina Herrera.

When it was announced that Zendaya would be starring in a tennis drama, our minds immediately jumped to all the ways in which the actress could reference the sport itself, yes, but also two of its most prominent legends—Serena and Venus Williams—within her wardrobe. Well, today, Zendaya just served up perhaps the most poignant method dressing moment of her Challengers press tour thus far.

Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach shared images of the actress re-creating a famous spread of the Williams sisters from a 1998 Vogue shoot. In her version, Zendaya posed in a custom Carolina Herrera black-and-white ball gown. The actress’s dress was designed in gradating stripes and featured a low-cut bodice and a dramatic, trailing train. Fittingly, the piece was a near replica of the Carolina Herrera confections Venus and Serena wore during the late ’90s shoot by photographer Annie Leibovitz. The photo of the sisters also happened to be their first (of many) appearance in the fashion glossy.

In a further homage to the tennis icons, Zendaya also honored the sisters’s beaded hairstyles with a similar look of her own. “An ode to the GREATS,” Roach wrote on Instagram, adding “We thank you for all you have done! With Love, Z and Law.”

View on Instagram

It’s one thing for Zendaya to reference the Williams sisters—whose influence transcends the sport of tennis—but an entirely different thing to re-create this specific look. Beads (often created by their mother, Oracene Price) became a signature of the sisters’s on-court style during the ’90s and early 2000s. But they didn’t go without controversy. During the 1999 Australian Open, one of Venus’s beads unintentionally fell out of her hair, resulting in the chair umpire awarding her opponent a point due to the “disturbance” caused on court.

Still, the Williamses continued to champion their signature style well after “beadgate,” as the LA Times called it back then, at multiple points throughout their careers. “Venus and I were not afraid to wear braids,” Serena explained in an interview . “We weren’t afraid to be Black in tennis. And that was different.”

During the Challengers Los Angeles premiere earlier this week, Venus walked the red carpet in Vivienne Westwood couture—much to the surprise, and bemusement, of Zendaya. She told reporters “I heard she showed up, and I was like, ‘Hold up! Is this for real?’” Truly a full circle moment.
