Tour de France 2022: Daniel Oss fractures neck after crashing with spectators during race

Oss got up, continued racing and eventually crossed the finish line, but was visibly in pain while doing so.

109th Tour de France 2022 - Stage 5

Cyclist Daniel Oss is retiring from the 2022 Tour de France after fracturing his neck during a crash that involved spectators in Wednesday's Stage 5. Oss, competing with Team TotalEnergies, was riding on cobblestones as bystanders stood on the side of the racing path.

The 35-year-old Italian cyclist first hit a spectator wearing a yellow shirt, but he lost more control of the bike after crashing into another individual who was leaning forward and using a phone to record the race.

That bystander was looking the opposite way, and when he finally turned his head, it was already too late to move back:

Oss got up and continued racing, eventually crossing the finish line. However, he was visibly in pain. His team made the announcement of him retiring from the race later that day.

"Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilization for a few weeks," read a  tweet from the official Team TotalEnergies account. "Daniel Oss is therefore forced to leave the Tour de France."

Australian cyclist Michael Gogl, competing with Alpecin-Deceuninck, was also seriously injured in the crash. His team announced that he had broken his collarbone and pelvis/iliac bone and later wrote that Gogl had to be treated for artery damage that it is now under control.

Italian cyclist Daniel Oss was forced to withdraw from the Tour de France after he suffered a fractured bone in his neck in a high-speed collision with a fan this week.

Oss, 35, crashed into a fan on Stage 5 of the race, who appeared to lean out into the cobblestone path while filming the cyclists on their phone.

Footage of the crash on Twitter shows Oss smashing into the spectator line alongside the race path and flying off his bike. A number of fans appeared to fly to the ground on the third of 11 cobbled sections on the route from Lille to Arenberg.

Oss was able to recover enough to cross the finish line at the end of the stage, but medical scans afterward revealed he suffered a broken neck in the crash.

“Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilization for a few weeks,” his team at TotalEnergies tweeted. “Daniel Oss is therefore forced to leave the Tour de France… 😢 The whole team wishes you a good recovery Daniel ❤️.”

Oss was one of three riders that did not take part in Thursday’s Stage 6, in Binche, Belgium. Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Deceuninck) also exited the race as a result of Oss’ crash. The Austrian has suffered a broken collarbone and pelvis/iliac bone, team officials said, adding that he will undergo surgery in the hospital of Herentals, Belgium.

Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) also abandoned the race due to “multiple abrasions and bruises over the body and required stitches for a cut above the elbow,”  team officials said.

“CT scans also revealed multiple non-displaced wrist fractures. Fortunately, Jack had no concussion or head injury and will travel home [Thursday].”

Tour de France Rider Breaks Neck After Colliding with a Spectator and Exits Competition

Footage shows cyclist Daniel Oss' collision with multiple spectators on a cobblestone road

Tour de France cyclist Daniel Oss broke his his neck when he collided with spectators, forcing him to exit this year's competition.

Oss, an Italian cyclist competing with the road racing team Team TotalEnergies, collided with fans during Wednesday's Stage 5, which took racers 157 kilometers (97.5 miles) between the cities of Lille and Arenberg, France, according to the Tour de France website .

Footage of the accident posted to Twitter appears to show 35-year-old Oss colliding with a fan wearing a yellow shirt before he plunged into another spectator who leaned into the race path to film riders as they passed by. Two other cyclists appeared to fall off their bicycles in the collision, too.

Oss finished Wednesday's stage after the incident, according to CNN , but Team TotalEnergies confirmed in a statement posted to Twitter that the Italian pro will leave the Tour de France as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

"Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilization for a few weeks," the team wrote in a statement.

"The whole team wishes you a good recovery, Daniel," the statement added.

The 2022 Tour de France Stage 5 included a total of 19.4 kilometers (12.04 miles) of "narrow, rough cobbled road," like what Oss was riding on when the collision occurred, according to Bicycling Magazine . Multiple crashes were reported during Wednesday's stage, but not all resulted in injuries as serious as Oss' broken neck, according to CNN.

The Tour de France did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on the incident.

Collisions at the Tour de France, even between spectators and cyclists, are nothing new. In 2021, a 30-year-old woman was arrested by French police after she leaned into the race course holding a large sign, colliding with a cyclist and creating a massive pileup . While the Tour ultimately dropped its lawsuit against the woman , she was ultimately fined €1,200 ($1,357, at the time) for causing the pileup, according to the BBC .

Australian Simon Clarke won Wednesday's Stage 5, according to the Tour de France website . As of Friday, Slovenian Tadej Pogačar leads the competition at large.

The Tour de France runs through July 24.

Team TotalEnergies rider Daniel Oss has been forced to retire from the Tour de France following an incident with a roadside spectator in yesterday's cobbled stage to Arenberg.

The team confirmed his departure in a Tweet on Thursday morning. "Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a vertebrae requiring immobilization for a few weeks. Daniel Oss is therefore forced to leave the Tour de France…" the team wrote.

Oss, 35, collided with the fan on the stage from Lille to Arenberg, which traversed 11 cobbled sectors along its route.

The collision occurred on sector 3, with Oss clipping the fan who had stepped slightly out into his path. Remarkably, Oss finished the stage, despite the accident.

Stage 5 was a day which saw a significant number of mechanical incidents and crashes. Oss is one of three riders unable to take to the start line in Binche, Belgium for stage 6, with Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Deceuninck) also leaving the race after crashing with Oss. The Austrian has suffered a fractured collarbone and pelvis.

Jack Haig, one of Bahrain Victorious' leaders, also abandoned. Haig also crashed out of the 2021 Tour.

There is limited information so far regarding Oss' injury, however it is clear that Oss will be forced to spend a significant period away from the sport as he recovers. The loss will be felt by Peter Sagan , for whom the Italian rider is a key lieutenant.

Team TotalEnergies will continue Le Tour without Daniel Oss, who plowed into fans lined up along the cobbles in Stage 5.

Team TotalEnergies got a scare on Wednesday during Stage 5 of this year’s Tour de France — but not as big as team rider Daniel Oss did.

As Oss whipped over the cobblestones between Lille and Arenberg, France, fans lined up to watch. Then, the Italian cyclist crashed into them at full tilt.

Clearly in pain, the 35-year-old got back on his bike and somehow finished the stage. But it would be his last of the 2022 Tour — a team statement later confirmed that he’d suffered a broken neck in the collision, and will now retire from the race.

“[E]xaminations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilization for a few weeks,” Team TotalEnergies tweeted on July 6 (auto-translated). The team confirmed Oss’s withdrawal and wished him a good recovery.

Multiple crashes occurred during Stage 5 on the insecure cobblestones, but few resulted in severe consequences. UAE Team Emirates’ Tadej Pogačar and Jumbo-Visma’s Jonas Vinegaard are deadlocked at the top of the Tour standings following Stage 7, with identical times of 3 hours, 58 minutes, 40 seconds. Jumbo-Visma rider Primož Roglič follows in third, 12 seconds behind the pair.

Tour De France Cyclist Breaks Neck After High-Speed Crash With Fans

Marco Margaritoff

Trends Reporter

Daniel Oss, an Italian cyclist, finished Stage 5 of the race before seeking medical attention.

Italian cyclist Daniel Oss fractured a vertebrae in his neck after colliding with fans during the Tour de France on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old was riding down a cobbled street during Stage 5 of the race between Lille, France, and Arenberg, Germany, when the crash sent him flying, according to CNN . Footage on social media showed Oss losing his balance and running into a fan before hitting the ground.

The Team TotalEnergies rider forged ahead and finished Stage 5 before seeking medical attention. His team sponsor confirmed in a statement that Oss had fractured a cervical vertebrae in his neck and has dropped out of this year’s race.

The statement, which is written in French, added that the team wishes him a good recovery.

Oss crashed during the third of 11 precarious sections of cobblestone within Stage 5. Footage of the crash was published to Twitter by a user under the name Victor Loy. It shows a fan leaning out into the cycling path to film riders before being hit.

Two other riders behind Oss crashed into the accident scene and were forced to drop out of Stage 6 in Binche, Belgium, on Thursday, according to the New York Post .

Michael Gogle, an Austrian rider for the Alpecin-Deceuninck team, broke his pelvis and collarbone and will undergo surgery in Herentals, Belgium, as a result. Jack Haig of the Bahrain Victorious team, meanwhile, suffered injuries after crashing into a loose barrier blocking the road.

“Haig was taken to the hospital following the crash,” Bahrain Victorious said in a statement . “Jack had multiple abrasions and bruises over the body and required stitches for a cut above the elbow. CT scans also revealed multiple non-displaced wrist fractures.”

Wednesday’s crash reminded many of the Tour de France fiasco of 2021 , when a spectator holding up a cardboard sign in the path of oncoming riders led to a disastrous pileup that forced numerous cyclists to the ground.

As for Oss, the athlete is expected to make a full recovery and to be among his peers once again in 2023.

Tour de france cyclist daniel oss breaks neck in high-speed crash with fan.

daniel oss tour de france

Cyclist Daniel Oss has been forced to retire from this year’s Tour de France with a broken neck after he collided with spectators.

The Team TotalEnergies rider crashed into fans at high speed while they were lined up along a cobbled street during Stage 5 between Lille and Arenberg.

Footage shows Oss getting knocked off balance after clipping one fan before colliding with another who is leaning out to film the race on a phone.

“Complementary examinations have revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilization for a few weeks,” a team statement read .

“Daniel Oss is therefore forced to leave the Tour de France… The whole team wishes you a good recovery Daniel.”

Multiple crashes occurred, although not all serious, during Wednesday’s Stage 5 as riders raced on cobblestones.

The Italian rider was somehow able to finish the stage despite the crash, which also involved two other riders who were brought down behind him.

During last year’s race, a fan caused a major crash after stepping in front of the racing pack holding a cardboard sign, appearing to display a message for the television cameras. The woman in question was subsequently identified and arrested by authorities.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar is now the current overall Tour leader after winning Stage 6.

Oss finished Tour stage with fractured vertabrae after hitting two fans | Video

  • July 7, 2022
  • Races & Results

daniel oss tour de france

Daniel Oss – main bodyguard for Peter Sagan – is out of the Tour de France after struggling to the finish of yesterday’s stage 5 only to discover he’d fractured a vertabrae in a crash with spectators.

Oss (TotalEnergies) was one of at least three riders who crashed in the incident on sector 3 yesterday, with about 30km remaining on the 157km stage from Lille to Wallers-Arenberg.

His team confirmed on Thursday morning, before stage 6, that he was now out of the race and he also faces a period on the sidelines as the injury to the bone, close to the spine, recovers.

“Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a vertebrae requiring immobilisation for a few weeks. Daniel Oss is therefore forced to leave the Tour de France,” TotalEnergies said.

Oss was riding right to the roadside when he began to lose control after brushing one fan – whose arm appeared to catch Oss’s – before ploughing into another who was leaning out into the road with his camera phone out.

Sector 3 chute spectateurs @TeamTotalEnrg @Daniel87Oss pic.twitter.com/dkExu8NNwl — Victor Loy (@LoyVictor) July 6, 2022

Remarkably, after such a heavy and high-speed impact he got back on his bike and managed to finish the stage; placing 154th at 13:07.

Both Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Danny van Poppel (Bora-hansgrohe) were behind Oss and they came down hard in the crash. While Van Poppel does not appear to have broken any bones, and so can continue in the race, Gogl had no such luck.

His team confirmed after the stage he had broke his collarbone and pelvis/iliac bone and was set to undergo surgery in the hospital of Herentals, Belgium.

Tour de France cyclist Daniel Oss breaks neck after hitting fan in high-speed crash

Italian rider Daniel Oss fractured a vertebra in his neck following the high-speed collision with a spectator which forced him to quit this year’s Tour de France.

Impressively, the TotalEnergies rider got up after his crash and went on to complete the stage, which went over 11 sectors of cobblestones, many of which are used in Paris-Roubaix each spring. But scans later revealed a cervical fracture and the 35-year-old was a non-starter for stage six of the race on Thursday.

The pavé of Paris-Roubaix is feared by riders, particularly those who tackle it during a grand tour who are not necessarily specialists.

Spectators on these stages tend to stand on the grass verges, and with riders trying to occupy the same space, to avoid the bumpiest sections of cobbles, there can be collisions .

A video recorded at the scene showed Oss riding along the grass verge and clipping a spectator who was filming the riders.

The collision triggered a chain reaction with the spectator and the rider both going down, collecting another rider in the process. Michael Gogl (Alpecin-Deceuninck) suffered a broken collarbone and pelvis.

Daniel Oss suffered this horrible crash yesterday and still managed to finish the stage. But his team has since said he is out of #TdF2022 after “additional examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilisation for a few weeks”. pic.twitter.com/Xv9SpCWj52 — Sophie Smith (@SophieSmith86) July 7, 2022

Oss’ departure deprives three-time world champion Peter Sagan of one of his key domestiques at this year’s Tour.

Jack Haig (Bahrain-Victorious) also had to abandon the race following a fall on Wednesday, while Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), one of the big pre-race favourites, had to pop his own shoulder back in after it was dislocated when he fell as a result of a stray hay bale. Roglic went on to lose more than two minutes in the general classification.

The race continues on Friday with the first proper summit finish of the race at La Planche des Belles Filles, where Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) secured the first of his two Tour titles in 2020.

The 23-year-old Slovenian, chasing a hat-trick of titles this year, is back in the yellow jersey following his stage victory on Thursday .

"The plan was to cover the biggest groups. It was a sprint stage on paper. We found ourselves in a three-man group. We started rolling, not so hard because there was no big gap. I knew the route, and at one point in turned to the right and we got good tailwind. I was confident with more people we could give a fight. At a high speed, it's hard to come back. It's a shame I didn’t have more people with me. In this cycling anything can happen. Maybe big showers, mistake, two guys more come from behind – you never know. But I realized it was very difficult – 20k, 20”, almost impossible. Thinking of combativity, it's a good award. Going to the podium, hearing people cheering... I enjoy being before a big crowd. It’s always so nice."

Tour de France star breaks neck in horror collision as fan gets way too close

When will Tour de France fans learn?

Italian rider Daniel Oss was forced to withdraw from the Tour de France with a broken neck after crashing into a fan on Stage 5.

And elsewhere, Primoz Roglic popped his own shoulder back into its socket after a nasty dislocation on the same stage, The Sun reports.

There were numerous crashes during a chaotic stage on the cobbles that was eventually won by Israel Premier Tech rider Simon Clarke.

But the day was marred by a horror crash involving Oss, 35. Footage posted to Twitter shows the TotalEnergies star smashing into a spectator who got too close to the action on the cobbles as they filmed riders going past at high speed.

The fan was sent flying to the ground while Oss also came crashing off his bike on the third of 11 cobbled sections on the route from Lille to Arenberg.

Incredibly Oss managed to pick himself up and cross the finish line at the end of the stage.

But after heading for scans his team confirmed he had fractured a bone in his neck and is now set for “a few weeks” out of action after withdrawing from the Tour de France.

TotalEnergies wrote on Twitter: “Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilisation for a few weeks.

“Daniel Oss is therefore forced to leave the Tour de France. The whole team wishes you a good recovery Daniel.”

Michael Gogl and Jack Haig were also forced to withdraw from the Tour after a day of chaos yesterday.

But Jumbo–Visma’s Roglic is still in the race despite dislocating his shoulder in a crash on Stage 5 caused by a safety bale that ended up on the road.

He patched himself up on the roadside and used a fan’s seat to pop his shoulder back into place.

Speaking at the end of the day, Roglic said: “I then put my shoulder back in the socket myself. I couldn’t do that on the road, so I sat in the seat of a spectator. It worked there.

“I know from experience what to do in such a situation, but of course it was not nice.

“It was very difficult after my fall, but we still did everything we could. Now we first have to see how I can continue in this Tour.”

Meanwhile, Defending champion Tadej Pogacar of the UAE Emirates team launched a blistering attack on a late climb to win stage six of the Tour de France and reclaim the overall leader’s yellow jersey on Thursday.

Pogacar attacked on a steep climb 500m from the finish and was a class above his key rivals Jonas Vingegaard and Adam Yates, who are now 31sec and 39sec behind him in the standings.

“It feels like the first time I had it, I wasn’t expecting it today, it was a real battle,” Pogacar said.

The Slovenian took the yellow JERSEY ahead of EF’s American rider Nelson Powless thanks to the 10 bonus seconds on offer for the stage winner.

The 23-year-old celebrated by repeatedly punching the air and is in prime position in his bid to win a third consecutive Tour de France.

He beat Australian Michael Matthews into second on the day while David Gaudu of FDJ was third and Briton Tom Pidcock fourth.

On his rookie Tour de France Ineos rider Pidcock, 22, will wear the best under-26’s white jersey Friday, although Pogacar leads him in those rankings.

Overnight leader Wout van Aert paraded the yellow jersey through Belgium before launching an eventually doomed but rampaging attack through 130km of rolling forest terrain before being caught 15km out.

Van Aert will race Friday’s stage in the green sprint points jersey instead and will have won many fans for his swashbuckling attitude.

Tour de France rider suffers broken neck after collision with fan

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

A Tour de France rider suffered a broken neck after colliding with a fan standing at the edge of the road forcing him to quit the race.

Italian Daniel Oss was forced to withdraw after scans revealed the 35-year-old had suffered a fractured cervical vertebra - one of the vertebrae in your neck that make up your spine.

Oss's team Total Energies said on Twitter: "Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilisation for a few weeks.

A clip of the video is shown below or can be seen here on Twitter.

"Daniel Oss is therefore forced to leave the Tour de France."

During a clip circulated on Twitter, Oss could be seen cycling close to the edge of a cobbled road near the cheering spectators when he collided with a bystander and flew onto the floor.

Another rider was also taken out in the crash and flew over Oss when the collision happened.

Australian Michael Gogl suffered a broken collarbone and pelvis and required surgery at a hospital in Belgium.

Oss managed to get back on his bike and complete the stage.

The stage was between Lille and Arenberg and features numerous cobbled roads and other difficult terrain.

Another rider, Jack Haig, also had to withdraw from the race after suffering an unrelated injury during the stage.

The decision to include cobbled roads on the Tour de France route has been criticised by many professional cyclists.

Chris Froome said the inclusion of the roads added "huge risks" to the riders.

Former Tour de France winner and Eurosport expert Sir Bradley Wiggins said: "As much of a spectacle as the cobbled stages are to the viewers and to us we see the carnage it causes and we see the damage it does to people who prepare for this race all year long."

Speaking on his podcast he asked if such stages were necessary.

Tour de france: daniel oss breaks neck after crashing into fan.

Daniel Oss has broken his neck during the Tour de France after crashing into a spectator.

With the Tour de France currently ongoing, Italian rider Daniel Oss has withdrawn from the race with a broken neck after crashing into a fan on Stage 5. In a separate incident, Primoz Roglic suffered a dislocation of his shoulder on the cobbled stage, however, the Slovenian rider bravely popped it back into its socket. A video surfacing across Twitter shows Oss was injured due to a spectator foolishly getting too close to the cyclist.  It was on the third of 11 cobbled sections on the route from Lille to Arenberg where the TotalEnergies star’s injury occurred, as Oss came crashing off his bike, with the fan sent flying to the ground. After heading for scans once the 35-year-old still incredibly managed to finish the race, it was revealed that Oss will be out of action for “a few weeks”. TotalEnergies confirmed on Twitter: “Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilisation for a few weeks.“Daniel Oss is therefore required to leave the Tour de France. The whole team wishes you a good recovery Daniel.”

It wasn’t just Oss and Roglic that were part of accidents, unfortunately, with Michael Gogl and Jack Haig also forced to withdraw with injuries of their own.

On the flip side, however, Roglic is still in the race.

Speaking at the end of the day, the 32-year-old confirmed: “I put the shoulder back in the socket myself. I couldn’t do that on the road, so I sat in the seat of a spectator. It worked there.”

He then added: “I know from experience what to do in such a situation, but of course it was not nice.”

Stage 6 of the Tour began earlier on Thursday, with the longest route of the tour starting in Binche, Belgium, travelling south east along the border with France before finishing in Longwy.
