Mikumi National Park safari | Travel guide
Mikumi Park (NP) is a 1,247 sq. mile park in south central Tanzania. Located within the north of the Selous Game Reserve in the Morogoro region, it is bordered by Uluguru Mountains in the North and Rubeho Mountains to the south-east
Most visitors coming to Mikumi National Park (NP), the fourth largest national park in Tanzania, come to see the ‘Big Five’ large mammals and won’t be disappointed.
During the rainy season, visitors can see many of these animals in herds as they migrate from flat lowlands to the heightened posts by the trees. Giraffes can be found eating in the acacia trees along the banks of the Mkata River where elephants seek them for their shade.

Why visit Mikumi National Park?
Safari in mikumi np.
With almost guaranteed wildlife sightings, it makes an ideal safari destination for those without much time. Located just 185 miles from Tanzania’s largest city Dar es Salaam, makes Mikumi National Park a popular option for weekend visitors from the city.
The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the popular centerpiece of Mikumi, draws frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains.
Visitors on safari game drives will find lions surveying their grassy kingdom, gazing at buffalo herds migrating below as well as the flattened tops of termite mounds.
Giraffes forage in the isolated acacia stands that fringe the Mkata River, islets of shade favoured also by Mikumi’s elephants.
Criss-crossed by a good circuit of game-viewing roads, the Mkata Floodplain is perhaps the most reliable place in Tanzania for sightings of the powerful eland, the world’s largest antelope. The equally impressive greater kudu and sable antelope haunt the miombo-covered foothills of the mountains that rise from the park’s borders.
In order to get a good look at the world’s biggest antelope, the eland, head over to the Mkata Floodplains from the game viewing roads. This is the most reliable location to watch elands in Tanzania, but it also offers sightings of kudu and sable antelope who populate the “miombo” covered hillsides along the limits of the park.
Accommodation is also available with well priced lodges in the surrounding area.
The park is well-known for its population of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, elands, greater Kudu, wildebeest, roan and sable antelope, buffalo, Burchell’s zebra, sable, eland, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest, spotted hyena and yellow baboons.
Predators include large numbers of tree-climbing lions, leopards, wild hunting dogs and black-backed jackals.
It is also common to see lions and sometimes giraffes and leopards along the Tanzania-Zambia highway, especially in the evening or night.
In the two pools north of Mikumi’s main park gate, hippos are frequently joined by flocks of open-billed storks and other waterbirds.
The surrounding mountains and hills bring compelling natural beauty with addition to superb light, making it a wonderful venue for wildlife photographers. Zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo can be found on the grassy plains.
Lions, which prey on these animals, share the same area and can occasionally be spotted. Giraffes browse leaves from the isolated acacia trees that fringe the Mkata River whilst the small islands of shade provided by these acacias are also favored by elephants.
More than 400 species of birds have been recorded here including Eurasian migrants such as red billed oxpecker, marabou stork and lilac breasted roller, which stays between October and April.
There are more interesting bird species in the Miombo woodland, for example, Shelley’s double collared sunbird, pale billed hornbill and violet-crested Turaco as well as violet-backed starling, yellow-throated longclaw and the bateleur eagle.

Mikumi National Park, Tanzania Off The Beaten Path
Updated December 2023, Mikumi National Park, Tanzania Off The Beaten Path was originally published in December 2020
Often skipped over by tourists who visit Tanzania, Mikumi National Park sees only a small fraction of the Tanzanian stars of the Serengeti, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, and the island of Zanzibar.
Conveniently located about 5 hours drive from the capital of Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Parks makes for a great weekend escape from the city. For road trippers, Mikumi is the perfect stop to break up the journey between Dar and Iringa.

Why Visit Mikumi?
Mikumi is known amongst safari-lovers for its bountiful wildlife, home to 4 of the African Big 5 (sorry, no rhinos here). More so, Mikumi National Park is known for its staggering array of small game and bird species. Over 400 different types of birds can be spotted here.
It should be no surprise that Mikumi offers the array of wildlife it does, the national park is contiguous with the Selous Game Reserve, the largest by land size in all of Africa.
A unique feature of Mikumi is their elephants, which tend to be noticeably smaller than other African elephants with much shorter tusks, making them less attractive to poachers.
Another great reason to head to Mikumi is that it is very much off the beaten path Tanzania. The park only gets a small fraction of the visitors who travel to Tanzania each year, compared to the 200,000 tourists that visit Serengeti National Park annually.
While the Serengeti is most definitely worth a visit, you won’t be dealing with the crowds (which we all know some can be quite obnoxious) here at Mikumi National Park.
Finally, as mentioned before, Mikumi is conveniently located and quite easy to get to. A 5 hour drive along the A7 Highway that connects Tanzania and neighboring Zambia will bring you to Mikumi from the big city of Dar es Salaam. The A7 also connects Iringa and Mikumi in about 4 hours.
How To Get To Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park is pretty easy to reach independently. Even for those short on time, you’ll pass through a part of the park along the A7 (if this is the case, keep your eyes peeled as you will almost certainly see some wildlife from the highway. The A7 will also give you epic views of the Udzungwa Mountains en route.
The drive will take around 5 hours to reach the town of Mikumi that is located about 15 kilometers outside the West Mikumi Gate. You can either opt to stay in Mikumi town and make trips into the park or plan to go camp in the park as part of your safari.
Planning to visit Zambia as part of your trip too? Don’t miss out on South Luangwa National Park & the Devil’s Pool
Busses make the haul from Dar es Salaam to the town of Mikumi daily. Good companies to book with include Sumry, Scandanavia, and Mbeya Express.
It is recommended to make your bus booking at least a day in advance. Your accommodation in Mikumi (and likely in Dar as well) can make your bus reservations for you, all they need is a copy of your passport so there is no need to visit the bus station twice.
Mikumi-bound busses depart from Ubungo Station which is located about 11 kilometers northwest of the Dar es Salaam city center. Know that traffic in Dar can be hellacious and it can take 2 hours to make it across the city, so factor that in to make it in time for your departure. You can expect the journey from Ubungo Station to Mikumi by bus to take around 6 hours.
On A Package Safari
This is by far the easiest as your safari operator will arrange everything for you. Most Mikumi National Park safari companies will either pick you up on arrival at Dar es Salaam Airport or from your accommodation in Dar.
Pick up a copy of the Bradt Tanzania guidebook and start planning your visit
Mikumi National Park Entrance Fees
Entrance fees to Mikumi National Park are $30 USD for foreigners per day and $15 per day for children 5-15 years. Residents pay $15 for park entry and resident children are $5 per day. Mikumi National Park fees are payable upon entry.
Going to Zimbabwe too? See why you need to visit Victoria Falls on your itinerary?
The Best Time To Visit Mikumi National Park
June to October is the best time to visit Mikumi as well as the remainder of southern Tanzania as it corresponds with the dry season. This is when skies are the clearest and wildlife is the easiest to spot.
The wet season falls from November to May, making wildlife viewing a bit more difficult, though birding is prime at this time. April and May are typically the worst and wettest months to visit Mikumi, but the park is still accessible even then.
Things To Do In Mikumi National Park
The main appeal to visiting Mikumi is for wildlife viewing. You can book packaged safaris that include transfers easily in advance or from Dar es Salaam.
For the DIY-style travelers out there, you can easily arrange a Mikumi safari from the town of Mikumi on arrival. Ask your accommodation in Mikumi to help you arrange a safari to get the best price. If you book a safari in advance of your arrival, you can expect prices to be a bit higher, around is $200-400 per day.
There are walking safaris on offer in Mikumi National Park, which are quite a unique experience (I’ve gotten to do one in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia and highly recommend going on one at least once). Walking safaris in Mikumi start at about $20 USD for four hours.

Mikumi National Park – A Tanzanian Safari Adventure Awaits
Mikumi National Park is located in the Morogoro region of Tanzania, covering an area of 3,230 square kilometers. The park is intersected by the Tanzanian A-7 highway. This highway divides the park into two distinct environments and landscapes, making Mikumi National Park quite unique. One of the most interesting aspects of Mikumi National Park is the presence of a subspecies of giraffes, which biologists and scientists suggest may be a link between the reticulated giraffe and Masai giraffe.
The vast plains and abundant wildlife in Mikumi National Park have often led to comparisons with the famous Serengeti National Park. The southeast area of the park is often inaccessible to tourists. Mikumi National Park has become a perfect weekend getaway from Dar es Salaam, as it’s the nearest park to the city. It’s an ideal destination for travelers with busy schedules who still want to explore wildlife, even with limited time. The word “Mikumi” is derived from a popular palm tree dominant in the park.
Mikumi National Park boasts unique vegetation types. The Rubeho and Uluguru mountains at the backdrop of the valleys offer spectacular views. The landscape is characterized by golden savannah grasslands, baobab and hardwood trees, palm trees, Acacia trees, forests, rivers, and more, creating a superb habitat for various wildlife species.
Wildlife Watching
Mikumi National Park is rich in wildlife species, and some of the animals tourists can see during a game drive include elands, impalas, greater kudus, black antelopes, wildebeests, olive baboons, zebras, elephants, buffalos, sable antelope, lions, spotted hyenas, vervet monkeys, yellow baboons, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, lesser kudus, warthogs, giraffes, and many others. The best times for a game drive are during the early morning hours or late afternoon, as you may have the chance to see some nocturnal animals coming out or returning to their dens.
Wild game drives in the park are commonly done at the Mkata flood plains.
Mikumi National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 400 bird species recorded. Bird enthusiasts can expect to spot species such as common ostrich, white-faced whistling duck, long-crested eagle, martial eagle, eastern chanting goshawk, African marsh harrier, African fish eagle, barn owl, African scops owl, spotted eagle owl, speckled mousebird, narina trogon, southern ground hornbill, crowned hornbill, malachite kingfisher, white-fronted bee-eater, lilac-breasted roller, moustached tinkerbird, black-collared barbet, lesser honeyguide, green-backed woodpecker, pygmy falcon, African hobby, yellow-collared lovebird, red-fronted parrot, white-breasted cuckoo-shrike, African black-headed oriole, black-throated wattle-eye, white-helmet shrike, Zanzibar boubou, fork-tailed drongo, northern fiscal, white-rumped shrike, white-necked raven, chestnut-backed sparrow lark, red-capped lark, red-faced crombec, yellow-breasted apalis, singing cisticola, African yellow warbler, little rush warbler, Angola swallow, common house martin, sombre greenbul, Fischer’s greenbul, African hill babbler, pale white-eye, violet-backed starling, lesser blue-eared starling, African thrush, cape robin chat, red-billed buffalo weaver, and zebra waxbill, among others.
Uluguru Mountains
The Uluguru mountain ranges rise to an elevation of 2,630 meters above sea level. These mountains derive their name from the Luguru tribe living around the mountain slopes. The Uluguru mountains are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains in East Africa. They are home to six amphibian species found nowhere else in the world, four species of reptiles, 100 species of plants, several bird species, and mammals. The mountains also serve as water catchments for the surrounding areas, including Dar es Salaam.
Guided Nature Walks
One of the best ways to explore Mikumi National Park is by taking a guided nature walk. Several trails have been established in the park for visitors. Before embarking on a nature walk, tourists will be briefed by a knowledgeable ranger guide who will accompany them during the walk, providing information about the plants, animals, and birds they may encounter.
Kinole and Choma Waterfalls
The splendid Kinole and Choma waterfalls are located in the Uluguru mountains. The cascading waterfalls from enormous rocks offer stunning sights for visitors. An exciting aspect is that you can swim below the waterfalls. On the way to the waterfalls, you can enjoy birdwatching and observe primates in the forest. The waterfalls are perfect for a day trip from Dar es Salaam, where you can bring packed lunch and have a picnic by the falls.
Hiking is one of the exciting activities you can enjoy at Mikumi National Park. Tourists can hike the Uluguru mountains and enjoy stunning views of the park’s landscape from the top. Visitors interested in hiking should come prepared with hiking gear, including waterproof hiking boots, raincoats, hats, sunglasses, insect repellents, long-sleeved clothing, plenty of drinking water, energy snacks, and other essentials.
Chilunga Cultural Tourism
One of the activities tourists can engage in at Mikumi National Park is having a cultural encounter with the local communities living around the park. This cultural experience can be organized by Chilunga Cultural Tourism, which provides knowledgeable local guides to take visitors around the village, offering insights into the people’s way of life, cultural beliefs, and traditions. Cultural tourism is a way to contribute to sustainable tourism. While in the villages, you can enjoy African music and dances and participate in their daily activities. Don’t forget to support the locals by purchasing local handmade crafts as souvenirs or gifts for your loved ones.
Best Time to Visit
The best times to visit Mikumi National Park are during the two dry seasons: from June to September and from December to February when the weather conditions are favorable. During the dry seasons, animals tend to concentrate around permanent water points in the park, and the vegetation is not as thick, making it easier to spot wildlife. The best time for birding in Mikumi National Park is from November to April when migratory birds from North Africa and Europe are present in the park.
Getting There
Mikumi National Park is located 283 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam. You can fly into Nyerere International Airport and then drive to the park. Tourists visiting Mikumi National Park can also combine their safari with Nyerere National Park, located south of the park. The driving time from Dar es Salaam is roughly 4 hours via Morogoro.
Where to Stay
While at Mikumi National Park, tourists can stay in hotels such as Mikumi Safari Lodge, Camp Bastian Mikumi, Vuma Hills Tented Camp, Tan Swiss Lodge, Voyage Village, Camp Atupele, Mikumi Resort Hotel, Mikumi Nalika Tented Camp, and Angalia Tented Camp, among others.
Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest national parks, covering an area of 30,893 square kilometers. It is located in the southeastern part of Tanzania. The area was first gazetted as a professional hunting area by a German Governor of Tanganyika in 1896. The reserve was later renamed after a big game hunter named Frederick Selous, who later became a conservationist. In 2019, Selous Game Reserve was upgraded to a national park, and the name was changed to Nyerere National Park in honor of the first Tanzanian president, Julius Nyerere.
Nyerere National Park is unspoiled and pristine compared to other national parks in the country. The park is renowned for its population of wild dogs. During game drives, tourists can see wildlife such as lions, zebras, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, wildebeests, African wolves, hyenas, buffalos, crocodiles, impalas, greater kudus, cheetahs, and elephants, to mention a few.
Nyerere National Park is home to about 440 species of birds recorded, making it one of the top birding destinations in Tanzania. Bird enthusiasts can observe several species of birds while at the park, such as African spoonbill, yellow-billed stork, white-headed lapwing, thick-billed cuckoo, rock pratincole, racket-tailed roller, white-backed night heron, white-backed vulture, African skimmer, black-winged stilt, Bohm’s bee-eater, northern carmine bee-eater, broad-billed roller, palm nut vulture, pearl-spotted owlet, Pel’s fishing owl, brown-headed parrot, and many others. The best time for birding is November to April.
Nyerere National Park can be reached by road from Dar es Salaam or Arusha town. The distance and time it takes to reach the park will depend on the route and gate you choose to use. The park can also be accessed by air from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Nyerere National Park, but there are several airstrips in the park, so you should choose one near your accommodation.

When visiting Mikumi National Park, we recommend combining it with offbeat parks in Southern and Western Tanzania such as Nyerere (Selous) , Ruaha or Katavi ending with a chimpanzee trekking safari at Gombe or Mahale . You may optionally extend out to Northern Tanzania safari parks such as Tarangire , Lake Manyara , Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti ( wildebeest migration ). - Mikumi Safari
The ultimate guide to your next Mikumi Safari
Get to know mikumi.
Bisected by the main highway through southern Tanzania, underrated Mikumi is the country’s fourth-largest national park and most accessible safari destination.
The 3,230-square-kilometre Mikumi National Park, effectively a northern extension of the vast Selous Game Reserve, protects a combination of grassy floodplains and wooded hills flanked by the Uluguru and Udzungwa Mountains to the north and south. The park’s main game-viewing circuit crosses the expansive Mkata Floodplain, an area of open grassland interspersed with stands of acacia, Borassus and baobab trees. Referred to locally as the mini-Serengeti, the plains support large numbers of elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and antelope, including wildebeest, impala, reedbuck and eland. Lions and spotted hyenas are present in reasonable numbers – if you don’t see them by day you’ll certainly hear them at night.

Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park – 283 Kilometers away west of the Tanzanian Capital of Dar es Salaam; Mikumi National Park is located on the Iringa Highway; north of Selous Game Reserve, the largest Game Reserve in Africa en route on your way to, Ruaha National Park and Katavi National as well as Udgzungwa National park, all these the undiscovered gems of the Southern Tanzania Safari.
Mikumi Safari – This park covers an area of 3230 square kilometers of which only part of it has been developed for tourism infrastructure wise. The Mkata flood plains in particular is the area with good infrastructure demarcated roads for game drives purposes but plans are underway to develop the rest of the park and put in place roads to enable the utilization of the whole park for game viewing and even walking/trekking purposes. Mikumi National Park borders Selous Game Reserve and is also part of the larger Selous Ecosystem.
The park is accessible all year round and the Mkata River ensures a year round supply of water and foliage for animals and it is here where you can spot the most largest antelope in the world; the elands, as well as the rare Greater Kudus. Other animals that can be spotted in the park include the giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests as well as the rare sable antelopes. The trade mark large herds of elephants of Mikumi which at times go rowdy can not go unmentioned.
The miombo woodlands of the foot hills of the mountains that rise above Mikumi national parks; borders offer awe inspiring views.
For birders, please prepare to spot the resident yellow-throated long claw, the lilac breasted rollers, bateleur eagle, and many aquatic birds at the two hippo pools just a few kilometers from the Entrance of the park.
Mikumi national park is an ideal destination for the weekend type or short escape from Dar es Salaam, but it is often incorporated on the longer itinerary that includes Selous, Ruaha National Park as well as Katavi National park and hiking on the Udzungwa National Park.

NV obtains new photos and videos of the elimination of traitorous ex-MP Ilya Kyva near Moscow
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Photos and videos of the elimination of pro-Russian ex-MP Ilya Kyva in a Moscow suburb were obtained by NV from sources in Ukraine’s SBU Security Service on Dec. 11.
This special operation was meticulously planned and successfully executed, the SBU informant confirmed.

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.
Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.
“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.
Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.
Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.
Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.
The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.

Around Konkovo Metro Station
Bitsevsky forest natural and historical park.
Bitsevsky Forest Natural and Historical Park in the very south of Moscow covers an area of over 18 square kilometres and is second in size only to Losyny Ostrov in the north of the city. In addition to areas of natural beauty, the park also incorporates many historical sites, including ancient settlements and burial mounds and three estates, as well as being a popular venue for walking, skiing and other sport activities.
Uzkoe Estate
The Uzkoe Estate is located in Bitsevsky Forest in between Konkovo, Tyoply Stan and Yasnovo metro stations on the side of the forest to the west of Sevastopolsky Prospekt. The historical name of the land where the estate is located is Uzkoe and the first estate was built here in 1641 by statesman Maksim Streshnev. Over the centuries the estate then passed to another branch of the Streshnevs, then the Golitsyns, Tolstoys and finally the Trubetskys. It was under the Trubetsky family that the surviving neo-classical estate house was built according to a plan by the architect Sergey Rodionov. After the Revolution, the estate was nationalised and given over to the Soviet Academy of Sciences for use as a sanatorium and was frequented by academics such as the scientist Lev Landau and the mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov. Today it remains the property of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Between approximately 1693 and 1697 baroque-style Our Lady of Kazan Church was built on the estate on the orders of Tikhon Streshnev. In 1930 the church was closed and subsequently used as an archive for old books. It was only returned to the Orthodox church in 1990 and reopened in 1992 when a new home was found for the books.
Yasenevo Estate
Another estate within Bitsevsky Forest is the Yasenevo Estate which is located close to the Novoyasenevskaya metro station. The area of Moscow known as Yasenevo has been known to exist since the 13th century and was owned by the Lopukhin family since the 17th century. In approximately the 1730s an estate house with two wings was built on the orders of the Lopukhins. Later the estate passed to the Gagarin noble family. After the Russian Revolution the estate was nationalised and in 1924 the estate house's second floor was destroyed by fire and was only restored in the 1970s. Today the house remains empty and in need of restoration work.
Just north of the estate house, closer to the metro station, is Ss Peter and Paul's Church. The church was built between 1751 and 1753 on the orders of Feodor Lopukhin, who was also responsible for the development of the whole Yasenevo Estate. The church is most famous for the wedding which took place here in 1822 between Lev Tolstoy and Maria Volkonskaya. The church was closed in the 1930s and only reopened in 1997.
