ZZ Top In The Studio For Afterburner Anniversary

The 35th anniversary of ZZ Top's Afterburner album is being celebrated by syndicated radio show In The Studio With Redbeard: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands.

The show's host Redbeard had this to say, "Thirty-five years ago ZZ Top's Afterburner joined an elite list of multi-million selling albums including For Those About To Rock, New Jersey, Load, Don't Look Back, and I'm In You populated by some of music's biggest-selling stars such as AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Metallica, Boston, and Peter Frampton. But don't go looking for it in the 2019 ZZ Top rockumentary film That Little Ol' Band From Texas. That otherwise well-done pastiche of just some of the chapters in this colorful trio's fifty year telenovella implied that all meaningful recording by ZZ Top wrapped at the conclusion of Eliminator way back in 1983. Let's be honest, following up Eliminator's international success was a fool's errand, but nevertheless our intrepid Texas trio kicked in the Afterburner for their ninth studio album, peaking at #4 sales on the Billboard Album Sales Chart and selling over 5,000,000 copies. That's a chalupa grande, mi amigo.

"In spite of the superstar sales and MTV celebrity through kitschy music videos, Afterburner was criticized by some longtime fans and music writers as being too slick and synthesized. But nowhere in the volumes written since its October 1985 release has anyone pegged the reason why: Afterburner was the first album since Rio Grande Mud, their second way back in 1972, without secret weapon veteran recording engineer/ producer Terry Manning. Without Manning's steady hand which had guided such legendary recordings as Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes, Led Zeppelin III, and ZZ Top's own Tres Hombres, Deguello, and Eliminator, there was no one effectively to advise Billy Gibbons when to put away the ever-growing electronic toy box in the studio. Billy, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard join me here In the Studio on the thirty-fifth anniversary of 'Sleeping Bag', 'Rough Boy', 'Stages', 'Woke Up With Wood', and 'Planet Of Women'. This episode is dedicated to the memories of Bill Ham and Joe Hardy." Stream the episode here.

ZZ Top Kicks Off Tour With Lynyrd Skynyrd: Set List and Interview

ZZ Top launched their Sharp-Dressed Simple Man co-headlining tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd on Friday evening at the iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The Texas legends delivered a tight 16-song set which touched on moments from their entire catalog. 1983's Eliminator recently hit the 40-year mark, while 1973's Tres Hombres will celebrate its own 50-year milestone next week. Both were well-represented during the night's performance.

You can see the complete set list, as well as videos, below.

The current tour marks a reunion for the two groups, who toured together in 1999 and 2000, with a brief reprise in 2019 when Lynyrd Skynyrd opened two dates on ZZ Top's 50th anniversary tour. But the roots go much further back for the two bands. "It was kind of a rekindling of kindred spirits. It’s a little known fact that ZZ Top gave Lynyrd Skynyrd one of their first official paying gigs, way, way back in the day," guitarist and vocalist Billy Gibbons laughs during a conversation with UCR following the first show. "We had an enjoyable moment to compare notes over five decades of sharing the stage with Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s been a really interesting and incredibly long run."

It's easy to think the Florida heat could have kept the fur-covered guitars in the road cases. But as ZZ Top broke into "Legs," the fabled instruments were right there, now representing a signature part of the song's legacy 40 years later . "It’s over 100 degrees," Gibbons confirms. "But you know, we’ve done it before and we’ll do it again. Somebody said, 'A fur guitar in this heat? Are you crazy?' I said, 'Well, we’ve been crazy for a long time. I think we’ll get by.'"

Some of the most poignant moments of the night were provided by the people who weren't there at the gig. Though Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington passed away earlier this year , he was still very much part of the concert. "I was walking across the stage just now and Gary’s setup is still in place," Gibbons shares. "What was really warming...was that last night, I was standing at the microphone and Lynyrd Skynyrd had just left the stage. I looked down and there was a piece of tape marking the spot that Gary would occupy. So he’s still with us in no small terms. All of those guys, you know, it’s that Skynyrd thing. They live on."

The Sharp-Dressed Simple Man tour, which sees the two bands alternating as headliners, continues tonight in Alpharetta, Georgia, before moving to Tennessee in the coming week.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top, two mythical acts of the rockin' ‘70s, are barreling towards a concert collision at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater on Saturday, September 7, with special guests The Outlaws! The “Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour” sets its sights on Spring and Summer of 2024, extending the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ North American trip with 36 new shows. In tandem with the tour, Lynyrd Skynyrd also celebrates 50 years in the music biz, promising fans a wild ride through some of their greatest hits, which include classic stadium anthems “Free Bird,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” and other fan-favorites from decades of multi-platinum albums. ZZ Top, on the other corner, comes flying in with their blues-rock sound blasts such as “Tush” and "La Grange.” Crossing into their synthesizer era, the trio pulls off riveting selections from genre-defiant albums, including Eliminator and Afterburner. Listen to all these and MORE in the electric atmosphere of the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater. Book your tickets now!

Over twenty years since their last joint tour, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top reunite for another sky-piercing concert series that’ll go down the annals of rock music history! The co-headlined “Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour” marks a 2024 spring and summer comeback, extending its year-long engagement with 36 new exhibitions. Come Saturday, September 7, the two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legends will tear the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater apart, featuring a must-see opening act by The Outlaws!

"It was kind of a rekindling of kindred spirits… We had an enjoyable moment to compare notes over five decades of sharing the stage with Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s been a really interesting and incredibly long run," ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons said in an interview.

Southern rock history changed when Lynyrd Skynyrd took their first mic test, foretelling a meteoric rise in the seventies. In 1973, the group debuted their first album, (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd), to mass acclaim. It showcased the now-classic hit “Free Bird,” which, at the time, peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their second signature song, “Sweet Home Alabama,” reached number eight in the chart, lighting the way for the band’s sophomore album, Second Helping. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s career brims with many gold, platinum, and multi-platinum records, a legacy rightfully acknowledged in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list.

Our second headliner, on the other hand, ascends the stage with a tremendous collection of blues rock classics. ZZ Top first claimed mainstream prominence through their third studio album, Tres Hombres, which presented bonafide smash hits “Tush” and “La Grange.” However, it was during their 1980s revival that they reached critical mass in terms of musical innovation. Drawing influences from punk and new wave, ZZ Top recorded the Diamond-certified album Eliminator and its follow-up, the 5x platinum Afterburner. Between the two, the band dropped Billboard Hot 100 hits such as “Legs,” “Sleeping Bag,” and the MTV fan-favorite "Gimme All Your Lovin'."

As for our guest band, The Outlaws are an iconic country rock ensemble renowned for “Green Grass and High Tides” and the Billboard Hot 100-charting single "There Goes Another Love Song."

The Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater will serve its stage to Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Simple Man” concert on Saturday, September 7! Featuring first-class acoustics, amenities, and a spacious lawn viewing area, Virginia Beach’s premier outdoor venue guarantees the best concert experience this side of Vancouver. The Story Of ZZ Top Firing The Black Crowes On Tour

The Story Of ZZ Top Firing The Black Crowes On Tour | I Love Classic Rock Videos

The Black Crowes for Hard To Handle - The Black Crowes / Youtube

The Black Crowes vocalist Chris Robinson wasn’t one to mince words, not even if it put him or his band in a tight spot. One example of this was when they opened for the Texan blues rockers ZZ Top in the ’90s and got fired from the tour on the spot.

The band was enjoying successes in the early ’90s even with their debut album  Shake Your Moneymaker,  spawning hits like a cover of Otis Redding’s  “Hard To Handle”,  or the songs  “Twice As Hard”  and  “Jealous Again”.  Their anti-establishment image was also partially responsible for this, although it also cost them along the way. Nonetheless, the album managed to go 5x platinum and would peak on #4 on the US Charts.

In support of their debut album, the band managed to land a spot on a tour with ZZ Top, who were promoting their 1990 album  Recycler,  which didn’t quite reach the success of previous ones like  Eliminator  and  Afterburner.

The Black Crowes supporting ZZ Top’s tour started in January 1991 and was expected to run through until May, but things got awry halfway through. The band said them being let off had nothing to do with music but business transactions instead. A three-night homecoming stand in Atlanta was scheduled for mid-March but the Crowes were booted two nights into the schedule.

Chris and Rich Robinson blame ZZ Top manager Bill Ham, who they said was mad at the remarks Chris made onstage against ZZ Top for using corporate sponsors on the tour. But they were already warned beforehand to tone down with making snarky comments (especially against Miller Brewing) in the midst of performances during the tour by ZZ Top’s management, Lone Wolf Productions.

In an MTV interview following their dismissal, the band said:  “They weren’t allowing us to be the Black Crowes. They were trying to censor what I was trying to say. . . . I don’t need a big corporation telling me about the only thing in my life I have control over really, which is my music.”

In a statement, ZZ Top’s party said:  “This decision was arrived at entirely within this organization and not as has been suggested as a result of corporate pressure. Miller Brewing has been a partner in this tour since its inception and has been very accommodating to ZZ Top and has asked absolutely nothing of the opening acts which have appeared. It is out of a sense of common decency and courtesy coupled with a moral and ethical obligation that this action has been taken.”
