United Center visitor guide: everything you need to know

United Center visitor guide

Chicago has no shortage of iconic sports stadiums. Soldier Field is one of the most storied and historic stadiums in professional football, and Wrigley Field might be the most famous ballpark in the world. But none of these can claim to have been the place where Michael Jordan changed the sports world forever. Home of the Chicago Bulls , The United Center is the primary indoor sports facility in the city. Its iconic Michael Jordan statue and dozens of championship banners make it a premier sports arena.

While it was built in the 1990s, the United Center’s amenities and facilities have been kept up and maintained nicely, as it’s still one of the best arenas in the country to see a show or game. In recent years, the United Center has become one of hockey’s temples. Deemed the “Madhouse on Madison,” Chicago Blackhawks fans were treated to a three-time Stanley Cup-winning dynasty that solidified the franchise as one of hockey’s most important organizations.

Sports are hardly the only thing to see at the United Center. Concerts are held throughout the year, with everyone from Radiohead to Harry Styles performing. Comedy shows, the circus, and other events like Michelle Obama and Oprah’s famous panel have been held here.

There are plenty of reasons to check out what’s on at the United Center when you’re visiting Chicago. If you happen to have your luggage on you before the show, you’ll want to find a secure place to store your belongings before heading in. Chicago’s most reliable luggage storage in Chicago is Bounce, which has dozens of convenient locations throughout the city, including the trendy neighborhoods surrounding the United Center.

United Center bag policy

United Center bag policy

The United Center bag policy is quite clear and allows small purses and clutches smaller than 10"x6"x2". Backpacks are strictly prohibited, but there are exceptions for diaper bags and baby carriers. All luggage and briefcases are prohibited as well.

There is a bag check available at Parking Lot J, but limited capacity and crowd issues make it less than ideal. Bounce’s Near West Loop Storage Spot is within walking distance of the United Center and is situated in Chicago’s trendiest nightlife and dining hotspot.

United Center food policy

All outside food and beverage are strictly prohibited according to the United Center bag policy. Exceptions can be made for medical reasons or for small children, but these will need to be approved by Guest Services officials.

The United Center was an early adopter of bringing in local restaurants and companies to expand the concession offerings. Goose Island Brewery , Big Star Tacos , and Lillie’s Q Barbecue are all notable companies offering premium food and beverage at the stadium. There are also vegetarian, kosher, and vegan offerings throughout the stadium.

There is a strict United Center policy prohibiting tailgating throughout the parking lots, but there are amazing dining destinations in nearby neighborhoods like the West Loop, Wicker Park, and Taylor Street ( Little Italy ) that are worth exploring for a pre-game meal.

How to get to the United Center

United Center transportation

There’s no need to worry about how to get to the United Center. It’s located on the near west side of Chicago. It’s not far from The Loop and is near buzzy areas like the West Loop and the UIC Campus. It’s relatively easy to reach via public transit, driving, and rideshare. The official address is 1901 W Madison St, Chicago, IL 60612.

Public transportation

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has a well-connected public transportation system consisting of buses and “L” trains. The arena is easily accessible by taking the #20 Madison bus as well as the #59 Damen bus. The nearest train station is Ashland Station, which serves the Green and Pink lines. This is about a 15-minute walk to the United Center.

The CTA recently announced an expansion of the Green Line train that will run just outside the United Center, which will make it very convenient to get to the stadium from the rest of the city.

If you are driving, the United Center is very conveniently located. Major highways, like I-290 (Eisenhower Expressway) and I-90/94 (Dan Ryan Expressway), are all within a few minutes. Massive parking lots surround the venue, but they can get crowded during events, and traffic is an issue for getting in and out of the area. If you’re going to park, it’s advisable to bring cash.

Taxi and rideshare

Services like Uber and Lyft are very convenient for getting to and from the United Center. They can drop you off just outside the arena, and there are designated ride-share pickup points, as well as taxi stands. These are convenient, but you may have to wait a while because of the crowds.

Depending on your location, walking to the United Center may be an option, especially if you are staying in nearby neighborhoods. Just ensure you plan your route and consider the distance and weather conditions.

United Center camera policy

Luckily, the United Center camera policy allows cameras and video recorders, as long as their lenses do not exceed 6” when extended. Cameras with detachable lenses, GoPros, drones, tripods, and selfie sticks are not permitted at all.

United Center rules

United Center rules

Permitted items .

Any air horn or noise-making item is strictly (and understandably) prohibited. Banners, signs, or flags aren’t officially allowed in the stadium, but there is evidence that exceptions have been made (still, it’s inadvisable to bring one). Electronics like iPads, laptops, laser pens, or laser products of any type are not permitted. While child-carrying packs are allowed, large strollers need to be checked in at the Guest Relations booths located at Gates 2 or 6.

Entering the stadium

For games and concerts, the United Center policy specifies that gates will open 90 minutes prior to tip-off, face-off, or the start of the performance. You’ll want to check your ticket or the promotion’s website to confirm when the gates will open - just in case.

The United Center has gone completely cashless, with the exception of walking vendors. Otherwise, concessions and merchandise will need to be purchased with a credit or debit card. Mobile pay options are also available.

There are no longer any restrictions regarding vaccination status for entry to the United Center, and masks are no longer required.

The United Center has been the stage for some of the most legendary athletes of all time, so it’s a fitting bucket-list arena to visit. Before the game, make sure to explore the city’s superb culinary and nightlife scenes. There are plenty of rooftop bars and patios to hit up when the weather is nice, and there are so many Chicago foods to try that you’ll want to sample as much from the restaurant scene as you can.

United Center History

Since it was built in 1994, the United Center has been the epicenter of sports in Chicago . Home to the Blackhawks and the Bulls, the United Center was created when the owner of the Blackhawks, William Wirtz, and majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls, Jerry Reinsdorf, partnered together in 1988 to build one of the top arenas in the world. Being the largest arena in the United States at more than 950,000 square feet, the United Center is known to many as “The Madhouse on Madison,” the “UC” and “The House that Jordan Built.” It became the replacement for the legendary Chicago Stadium, which was across the street from the United Center and was the previous home to the Chicago Blackhawks® and the Chicago Bulls. This venue has hosted more than 200 events a year since its creation and has been the home for a number of non-sports related events, including the 1996 Democratic National Convention, The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and Disney on Ice, plus concerts by iconic artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Who, Paul McCartney, and many more.

Included with the United Center is its beautiful 190,000 square foot Atrium, built in 2017. The Atrium features the Madhouse Team Store, which is a 10,000-square-foot retail store where guests can buy a number of sports memorabilia and customized attire; the 1800 Market, which is a high-tech market powered by Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology that allows guests to scan a credit card, grab what they want, and simply walk out of the store; and Queenie’s Supper Club & Cocktails, a modern take on the Midwestern supper clubs. The United Center also features statues of legendary sports figures including NBA legend Michael Jordan, one of the greatest hockey players of all time Bobby Hull and legendary Blackhawks center Stan Mikita, along with a bronze bust of two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Scottie Pippen and Bulls’ Broadcaster Johnny “Red” Kerr. The United Center was the home for the Chicago Bulls’ Championships in ’96, ’97 and ’98, as well as the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup® Championships in 2010, 2013 and 2015 .

The United Center has perfected the transition from a hockey-ready ice rink to basketball hardwood, with the process taking a crew of 45 people only two hours to achieve.

Parking and Admission at United Center

Parking is easy at the United Center, with multiple parking lots surrounding the venue. Parking is open to the general public 2.5 hours before the game or show, with prices varying anywhere from $10 to $100. Guests can either pay online before the event or with a credit card in the parking lots.

Non-flash, non-detachable lens still cameras are allowed in the United Center during sporting events with no other professional equipment allowed. During concerts and other events, professional cameras and equipment are not allowed. Personal bags, smaller than 10″ x 6″ x 2″ are allowed in the arena; however, backpacks of any kind are not allowed, with limited exceptions for medical and diaper bags. Strollers have to be checked in at guest relations locations. Other prohibited items include selfie sticks, banners, signs, flags, laptops, laser pointers, weapons, projectiles, and outside food or beverages.

United Center Capacity & Seating Options

The United Center has a varying capacity, with a maximum capacity of 23,500 and approximately 23,000 for concerts, 21,000 for Bulls games, and 20,500 for Blackhawks games. Along with thousands of general seating options, the United Center offers a number of premium seating and VIP locations, including lower-level suites, club-level suites, penthouse-level suites, the BMO Club, and the Budweiser Champions Club. The suites all include VIP Parking passes, full-service catering and luxury seating both in and outside the suite. The BMO Club features VIP Parking, an all-inclusive chef’s table and top-shelf bar in a lounge atmosphere. The Budweiser Champions Club includes VIP Parking, reserved dining table, in-seat wait service, and top-shelf bar. All of the premium seating options have fantastic views of the event.

What are the best seats at the United Center?

The best seats at the United Center vary depending on the event and personal preferences. Check out United Center seating charts and find your favorite seat today.

Food & Beverage Options at United Center

With Chicago being one of the top food hubs in the country, it is no surprise the United Center has an unbelievable amount of excellent food and drink options. Along with bars throughout the venue, the United Center’s concessions list includes Lillie’s Q, Gibsons Steakhouse, The Little Goat Taqueria, Chicago Dish, Madison Street Eats, Giordano’s, and many more. For specialty drinks, the United Center features Mindy’s, Goose Island Pub, Crown Royal Whiskey Bar, and the Corona Beach Bar.

Things To Do

Music and concerts | yes, bad bunny sold out a weekend at the united center — but for chicago’s latin music fans, he’s more than that.

It was silly to think that the crowd wouldn’t fill in. It was a Thursday night. Folks most likely had to work, and traffic down Madison Street around the United Center is always terrible on show nights.

By the time the first notes of “Monaco,” the viral single from Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny’s latest album “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana,” rang out, the blinding light coming from every cell phone and glowing cowboy lanyard (provided upon arrival) were enough to confirm the fans by the thousands were present and ready.

Kicking off his first of three, narrowly sold-out nights in Chicago on his Most Wanted Tour, Bad Bunny (El Conejo Malo in Spanish, or if you — like his loyal fanbase — prefer to be a bit more familiarly affectionate, simply, Benito) took to the stage with the confidence only a global superstar can carry.

The anticipation ahead of his arrival was palpable. Approaching the venue, vendors lined both sides of the street with bootleg merchandise and sombreros Sinaloa (known by Anglo audiences as cowboy hats) embellished with everything from beads and feathers to flashing LEDs. In contrast to his previous outings, Bunny — born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio — had asked fans ahead of the tour’s start in February to trade their neon and streetwear styles for the likes of bolo ties, denim, bell bottoms and fringe-lined button-ups. Chicago, like other cities visited thus far, complied.

Just after 8 p.m., fans were still arriving. Some heading straight for the box office to cop last-minute tickets not gobbled up by ‘bots or scalpers lurking on Ticketmaster, while those inside clamored around merch booths for official, Benito-sanctioned fashions.

Fans Melina Coronel and John Boyer, who purchased tickets back when they first went on sale, were hesitant to speculate on what was in store for them that evening.

“I upgraded my seats,” Coronel said excitedly. “I was originally in the 300 section, now I’m in the 100 section, so I got lucky. You know, YOLO.”

“We’ve been fans for quite a few years,” Boyer added. “We went to his show, the first one after COVID at Allstate Arena in 2022 when things first started opening back up. Then we went to the Soldier Field one. It was like a party. But a good show, a good crowd — the more excited and energetic the crowd, the better the show. We’re just excited for the whole thing.”

For friends Evelyn Gomez and Lyz Chavez, attending Thursday’s show was a game-time decision. Gomez had purchased tickets for the pair two hours prior after realizing she didn’t want to miss the artist she first saw back in 2018.

“It was with Pitbull. Becky G was on (the bill) too. Her and Bad Bunny, it was before they got big-big. I had pretty good seats, too.” Gomez remembers. “But I wanted to come tonight regardless, it was just time, money, everything. Last minute, I asked a group of friends and they already had tickets, so I asked Lyz and she was down. I was thinking I’d even come by myself. I just want to have fun.”

She says Bad Bunny’s three-night run means much more to Latinx folks in the city than simply catching a great concert.

“I love seeing his growth,” she continues. “I love that he’s brought more of the Latin side to the U.S. than the opposite. We’re finally popular, our music is on English stations and you never heard that before. What he’s doing is awesome, he’s brought everyone together.”

“It’s also amazing to think that he came from bagging groceries to all of this,” Chavez adds. “To go from that to breaking barriers and bringing the Latin community, the Latin people and culture to American culture — he’s a huge artist. He did it on his terms. I didn’t know I was coming to this concert and I was listening to his albums this morning when I was working from home and I can’t pick a favorite. They’re all great in their own way. They make you think about specific things that were going on in your life at that time — the album where he was riding around New York City during the pandemic (2020’s “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo”) – you attach your memories to that. He’s become a generational artist. He’s going to be the Los Bukis or Juan Gabriel of our time.”

As the lights dimmed at 9 p.m., the Philharmonic Orchestra Project — a 12-piece orchestra led by Carlitos Lopez — graced the far stage. Setting the early tone for what was about to become an ambitious spectacle of grandiose proportions, the ensemble’s lush, sweeping arrangements were likened to “an old movie where the credits play at the beginning” by one attendee. The stage was a large circle divided into two, separated by the audience in the middle and connected by a runway suspended mid-air — and guaranteed a 360-degree immersive experience.

Fifteen minutes later, a suddenly pitch-black venue (again, save for cellphone and lanyard lights) welcomed its hero. Opening with the Drake-adjacent celebrity lament “Nadie Sabe,” Bad Bunny arrived front and center. With his velvety baritone booming, he rolled through myriad tracks from 2023’s “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana” with sophisticated flare and ceaseless energy, flanked by upwards of 15 dancers, funnels of smoke, fireworks and other flashy pyrotechnics. A stunning choreography sequence made “Vou 787,” which samples the seductive, siren synth of Madonna’s “Vogue,” a standout of the night.

The just over two-hour show was complete with video intermission — which brought the filmed Benito-on-horseback to life with the actual Benito re-entering the arena on one of two horses he’s been touring with, along with their trainers and owner — and was a journey in self-actualization and mythologizing. It was dramatic, as any true Pisces would produce, and exhilarating, a place where he and his fans alike thrived in both tension and catharsis. Peppering the end of the night with bites of now-classics such as “Chambea,” “Yo Perreo Sola,” and “Me Porto Bonito,” among others, the artist showed just how far he’s come in a decade — though debut LP “X 100pre” was left untouched throughout the performance (and many fans griped they didn’t get their fill of songs from the breakthrough “Un Verano Sin Ti”). Then the audacious newcomer with labyrinthine graphics shaved into his scalp, now a consummate showman with nothing to prove, still unflinching in his vision for what popular music can and should be.

In a stripped down moment, where he sat atop a piano serenading fans (and letting them serenade him in return) with “un x100to” (released last year with beloved, regional Mexican band Grupo Frontera) and 2018’s “Amorfoda,” Bad Bunny displayed the graciousness, humor and humility that has endeared him to fans from the beginning.

Filtering back to their cars, ride-shares, and idling buses around 11:15 p.m., throngs of anointed followers continued smiling and dancing. Aida Acevedo and her daughters Bella, 13, and Delilah, 11, were more than pleased with their first time seeing their favorite artist.

“It was so fire!” Bella smiled. “(The tickets) were kind of a surprise. But hearing ‘Monaco,’ the horse — it was awesome.”

“I knew they were going to love it,” Acevedo said. “I love him. I liked that he played all songs, not just the new, but the old. His music has so much feeling. There’s so much love there.”

$uicideboy$ With DENZEL CURRY, EKKSTACY, HAARPER, AND MORE

$uicideboy$ are bringing the Grey Day Tour back to United Center on October 8!

This year for Grey Day Tour 2024, $uicideboy$ have partnered with PLUS1 for something very near and dear to the group: mental health. $1 per ticket will go towards helping those that need it the most. Ruby da Cherry and $crim are very excited about this partnership, and this is only the beginning of their plans to give back to those that have given them so much.

Since its inception in 2019, the Grey Day Tour has emerged as a standout and one of the "absolute coolest" summer tours, uniting rap and hardcore genres, while also serving as a launching pad for the first national tours for many critically acclaimed artists as well as showcasing artists from their independent label G59 Records. According to Billboard , the Grey Day Tour has propelled the $uicideboy$ into the Top 20 rankings of highest-grossing hip-hop touring acts of all time.

Coinciding with the tour announcement, the group has revealed the lead track “Us Vs Them” from their eagerly awaited next full-length album, titled New World Depression , set to release on June 14. On "Us Vs Them," the $uicideboy$ delve into facing tough challenges and feeling disconnected from society. Ruby da Cherry and $crim deliver verses about coping with personal struggles and maintaining one's identity in a challenging world. The single has already been featured on official Spotify playlists, including New Music Friday US and landing the cover Tirade and Alternative Hip-Hop. A link to stream the single is HERE .

Throughout New World Depression , the duo navigates themes of fame, self-destruction, and the relentless search for identity amidst chaos. Across the 13-track release, their raw, unfiltered lyrics serve as a gritty narrative of personal turmoil, substance abuse, and the struggle for authenticity in a world that often feels cold and indifferent. This album is an unapologetic exploration of the darker sides of human experience, resonating with anyone who has ever felt out of place or battled with their own shadows. The album will commemorate the 10th anniversary since the formation of $uicideboy$. Album pre-save is HERE .

Since forming a decade ago in 2014, the $uicideboy$ have prolifically shared their distinctive fusion of rap, punk, and trap with audiences worldwide. Starting out as pioneers of the SoundCloud Rap movement, they have gone on to deliver a tremendous amount of music and have achieved over 20 billion all-time streams, placing them in the Top 100 streaming artists of all time. In 2023, they were one of Spotify’s Top Groups of 2023 and one of SoundCloud’s Top 5 Most Streamed Artists.
