The roadside attractions. The national parks. The great open road. Your diner breakfast platter. There are so many moments and memories you’ll encounter on a road trip and, chances are, you’ll want to capture a digital reminder of them all. A great road trip deserves great photography and the only way to get those perfect shots are with the best road trip cameras that meet your needs.

Sure, you can take photos with your phone when you travel. But is that really the best choice? If you’ve ever been disappointed with a washed out sunset photo, a too-cropped selfie, or a flat landscape that looks nothing like it did in person, it might be time to upgrade your camera.

For roadtrippers especially, a good-quality camera can make all the difference. After all, road trips are usually planned and plotted around epic photo-worthy stops, whether those stops are for the Grand Canyon or the world’s largest cow .

What should you look for in a road trip camera? And what camera should you buy for a road trip? As a photographer myself who has been road tripping and photographing roadside attractions for over 15 years, I lay out my thoughts below. Keep reading to find out why you should buy a road trip camera, what to look for in the equipment you choose, and my recommendations for the best road trip cameras to capture your travels.

Why You Need a Camera for Your Road Trip

Why should you buy a camera for a road trip and not just use your smartphone? While smartphones have come lightyears in terms of quality over the last few years, they still haven’t caught up to DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. Here are some of the reasons you should consider adding a dedicated camera to your bag:

  • No matter how good your phone’s photos are, a good quality DSLR will always be better. I’ve been shooting with the same Canon 5D MKII DSLR for over ten years and it still takes amazing photos that are sharper and more vibrant than my brand new iPhone.
  • Lenses, lenses, lenses! With a smartphone you’re pretty much stuck with whatever the built-in camera comes with. Usually that camera works great within certain parameters but if you zoom in too far, it’s nothing but grain (even with advancements like the three-lenses now built into the iPhone and beyond). Using a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses is life-changing. From ultra-wide to ultra-zoom to macro, you can choose lenses that fit your needs. And, over time, you can build up a library of lenses to fit every need you may have.
  • Your phone is always doing double duty. Think about how many things you’ll use your phone for on a road trip. It’s your GPS, your file manager, your to-do list, your social media machine, your stereo…and your camera. If you don’t want to miss a shot, having a tool that’s not being used something else is a must.
  • It’s always good to have a backup. Even if you do plan to take photos with your phone, having a just in case fallback option for photos is a good idea. What if you lose your phone, it runs out of batteries, or it runs out of space? Having a backup camera ensures you won’t have to sacrifice memories.
  • Most modern cameras connect to your smartphone. If you’re worried about not being able to share those photos to Instagram, don’t. Most modern cameras connect to your iPhone or Android via bluetooth or wifi, so you can get better quality photos sent straight to your phone. This also usually comes with the functionality to use your phone as a remote, so, together with a tripod, you can 100% up your selfie game.

What to Consider When Buying a Road Trip Camera

What road trip camera you get depends on your needs. Do you want epic, sharp, colorful photos that will get all the likes on Instagram? Or do you just want snaps to send to your family? Here are some things to consider what choosing what camera to buy for a road trip.

Cameras can range in cost from under $100 to well into the thousands. And that doesn’t even include extras like lenses, cases, external flashes, and more. Think about your budget now and for the future. A good-quality camera is an investment but it can last a long time and the interchangeable lenses mean when it comes time to upgrade, you’ll just need to replace the body. Whereas a cheap point in shoot might not cost a lot now, but might be obsolete a year from now.

Weight is a key factor to consider when choosing a camera, especially for travelers. If all you’re doing is hopping in and out of a car, a heavier DSLR won’t be too much of a hassle. But if your road trip involves a day-long hike through Zion National Park or a week-long pass to Disney World, a heavy camera will weigh you down. Consider how long you plan to be on your feet with a camera around your neck.

The great thing about road trips compared to any other type of travel is that you usually have a little more leeway when it comes to road trip packing . Whereas taking a plane you have to contend with TSA restrictions on the size and weight of your luggage, on a road trip you can pack your trunk to your heart’s content.

Still, many road trips start with a plane ride to the starting point, your car might be packed to the brim already, or you just don’t want to worry about carrying around a lot of extra stuff.

Will you be taking your camera hiking? You’ll want something light enough to carry. Will you be taking it to the beach? You’ll want something waterproof. Do you plan to videos? Check out the video specifications. Are you a selfie queen? A flip screen is a must. Do you take a photo of every meal? Consider a macro lens.

How you will use your camera, where you’ll take it, and what you like to shoot are all factors to consider when choosing a camera to take on a road trip.

What features you need in a road trip camera are entirely up to you. What might be important to me won’t be the same for you. Deciding what is important to you in a camera can help you narrow down your options. Think about whether you’re going to use it take videos versus photos. Selfies versus landscapes. Indoor photos versus outdoor. During the day versus at night.

Here are some camera specifications to look out for:

  • Sensor Size : a camera’s sensor size determines just how high quality the photos can get. Generally speaking, the bigger the sensor, the better the quality of photos. A bigger sensor usually means bigger pixels, less noise, better performance in low-light situations, and an image that contains more information overall. A full-frame DSLR or mirrorless camera mirrors the size of 35mm film cameras and has a bigger sensor than other formats like APS-H or APS-C crop-sensor cameras (found in still-decent low to mid-range DSLRs and mirrorless cameras), or 1.5 to 1-inch sensors (usually found in fixed-lens point and shoots).
  • Megapixel Count : The megapixel count for your camera refers to the number of pixels it can capture by the million. The higher the megapixel count a camera has, the larger you can make prints that still come out looking sharp. While you want a high megapixel count, if you’d just planning to post your road trip photos on Instagram, a blog, or Facebook or print a couple of 8x10s for your wall, you don’t have to go crazy. High megapixels alone shouldn’t be the only factor you consider.
  • ISO Range: A camera’s ISO setting refers to the camera sensor’s sensitivity to light. The higher the ISO, the less light you need. So, on a bright, sunny day, you would be able to shoot at a low ISO, but indoors in darker settings, you’d need to bump it up higher. Typically a camera might have an ISO range of about 200 to 1600 but modern cameras stretch that judiciously in both directions. If you plan to do a lot of shooting indoors or in low light situations, look for a camera that performs well at a high range. Just be weary, the higher the ISO the higher the image is susceptible to noise and grain.
  • Screen Type: Digital cameras use LCD (liquid-crystal display) screens to display and set settings, allow you to review images, and to frame and preview shots. The sizes and functions vary and your needs will vary as well. Some cameras have capacitive touchscreens, allowing you quick access to setting and the ability to focus your image with your fingertip. If you take a lot of selfies or photos from weird angles, you might want to make sure you get an articulating screen — also known as a flip screen, flip-out screen, adjustable screen, or hinged screen — that you can move to get a better view from different angles.
  • WiFi Capabilities: For roadtrippers on the go, a camera that has wifi capabilities might be an important functionality. With a wi-fi enabled camera you can share photos to your smartphone to post to social media, turn your phone into a remote for better selfies, or automatically transfer your photos to your laptop when you get to your hotel
  • Video Specs: If video is important to you, a camera’s video specs should be important to you. You’ll want a camera that offers at least 1080p HD resolution or even the even better 4K capabilities, you’ll want to make sure if uses a compression level and file format that works for you, and you’ll want to make sure it can handle any accessories you need, like microphones or lights.
  • Level of Manual Control: Some people want a camera that will do all the work for them and others want a camera that will allow them to adjust every setting for the perfect image. Keep in mind how automatic or manual you want your camera to be when choosing one.
  • Zoom Type: If a camera has an optical zoom, the actual lens adjusts to get up close to far away subjects. A digital zoom will adjust within the camera itself and basically makes a cropped version of what it sees. Optical zoom produces better images with more detail.
  • RAW Shooting: If a camera has the ability to shoot in RAW it means you can capture images that capture all the available data, without compression. This produces images superior to JPGs that make editing easier, because there is more data for your photo editing program to work with. RAW file sizes are much bigger thank jpegs and have to be edited and saved in a more common format before sharing to social media, so it might not matter to you. But professionals almost always shoot in RAW for the flexibility the files have to be worked with beyond the initial capture.
  • Battery Life : When taking a road trip, your camera’s battery life matters. You’ll often be spending all day in the car and sometimes be camping or hiking with no access to electricity. You want to make sure you can go as long as you need without needing a charge (or be prepared to stock up on extra batteries).

DSLR Cameras for the Best Road Trip Photography

DSLRs are the best cameras to buy if you’re serious about your travel photography. They take amazing photos, have the ability to shoot in RAW, and have so many options for lenses and accessories. While the price tag may be steeper than any other option, consider it an investment. I used the same Canon 5D Mark II DSLR for over ten years, and that body still takes amazing photos. When I did decide to buy a new camera (a Canon 6D Mark II), I just needed to replace the body – all of the lenses I collected over the years still work since I stuck with the same brand.

Besides taking amazingly sharp photos, the best part about having a DSLR is the interchangeable lenses. I love being able to hook on an ultra-wide lens on a road trip to capture the full scenery of the grand canyon or all of the world’s largest buffalo on one screen and then switch to an ultra-zoom to shoot a hot dog eating contest from across the crowd.

DSLR stands for “digital single-lens reflex” camera. It combines the technology of traditional 35mm film SLRs (single-lens reflex cameras) with a digital imaging sensor. Inside the camera is a mirror that reflects light that comes through the lens into an optical viewfinder (where you can preview your shot) from a prism or set of additional mirrors. When the shutter is pressed it triggers the mirror to flip and the shutter to open, allowing light to hit an image sensor, capturing the final image.

Pros of a Travel DSLR

  • DSLRs usually offer superior quality to mirrorless, point and shoot, or phone cameras.
  • If you stick with one brand, lenses can be used across different camera bodies and upgrades.
  • They’re durable and can be used for many years.
  • They usually have excellent battery life for long days on the road.
  • Most newer models are WiFi enabled to use your phone as a remote or send yourself photos.

Cons of a Travel DSLR

  • DSLRs tend to be the most expensive option for cameras.
  • Usually you pay for the camera body but lenses, external flashes, and other accessories cost extra.
  • They weigh more and take up more room in your car than other options.
  • There is a higher learning curve to use the manual options (though most do come with out-of the box auto functionality as well).

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Full Frame Digital SLR Camera Body

For over 10 years I did most of my shooting with a Canon 5D Mark II. I’ve taken it all around the world and across the country on road trips. That might tell you a little bit about how rugged and durable the camera is and how much improvement must have come two generations later. I’ve rented newer generations of the camera (the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and III) a few times when I needed a backup and I would strongly lean towards staying on this path if I were to buy a new DSLR for road trips.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV features a 30.4 MP full-frame sensor and 4K video for high-resolution shooting no matter the medium. It’s a professional camera, so you’ll pay for the quality, but this work horse is worth it.

Mirrorless Cameras for a Lighter Load

A great alternative to DSLRs for road trip photography is a mirrorless camera. Like DSLRs, they take fantastic photos and use interchangeable lenses, but are usually a slightly cheaper and weigh a lot less.

I recently added a mirrorless camera to my road trip photography arsenal. It’s the perfect addition to my kit that I can bust out when I want something lighter to throw in my purse or for those times I don’t want to carry around something heavy and bulky, like when I’m spending an entire day at Disneyland or going for a hike.

As I said above, a DSLR works with a mirror flipping to open to reflect light. As you can probably guess, a “mirrorless” camera doesn’t work with mirrors. In this type of camera, light passes through the lens onto the image sensor, capturing a preview of the image and displaying it on the rear LCD screen of the camera or on an electronic viewfinder (EVF).

Mirrorless cameras are also referred to as mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras (MILC), DSLM (digital single lens mirrorless), or EVIL (electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens).

Pros of a Mirrorless Camera for Travel

  • Mirrorless cameras take great quality photos and are continually being improved upon.
  • They weigh less than DSLRs.
  • They have many of the same manual functions photographers expect from a professional camera (but also have automatic functions perfect for beginners).
  • They have interchangeable lenses, just like DSLRs.

Cons of a Mirrorless Camera for Travel

  • Mirrorless cameras can be just as expensive, if not more, as DSLRs.
  • Usually you pay for the camera body and a kit lens, but additional lenses, flashes, and accessories cost extra.
  • The battery life isn’t as good as a DSLR.

Travel Point and Shoot Cameras that are Easy to Use

Before everyone switched to using their smart phones as a camera, there were point and shoots. To be honest, with the quality of the latest iPhones, Google Pixels, and Samsung Galaxys, a new phone is probably a better investment over a point and shoot camera.

Still, if you want quality photos and don’t want to lug around a DSLR or mirrorless camera, there’s a place for using a point and shoot camera on a road trip. The biggest advantage to using a point and shoot over an iPhone is that it frees up that phone to be used for other things. You won’t have to worry about missing picture because your phone is being used for a GPS or backseat game playing. It’s also a cheaper option to have a point and shoot available just in case you run out of battery or space on your phone. Also, some point and shoots have features that phones do not, like waterproofing. A waterproof point and shoot is a great option if you’re planning to spend a of time on a beach, it’s the perfect camera for a beach road trip.

A point-and-shoot camera (also referred to as a compact camera) is a camera that’s meant to be simple to use: you point at your subject, you see what to expect on an LCD screen, you press a button, and your image is saved. These cameras are basic, don’t allow for interchangeable lenses, and usually have a built-in flash.

Pros of Travel Point and Shoot Cameras

  • Having a point and shoot camera on a road trip will help save your phone’s battery life and storage.
  • They are often lighter, easier to use, and have a quicker learning curve than for a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
  • They are more affordable than DSLRs or Mirrorless Cameras.
  • The optical zoom is superior to most phone cameras.

Cons of Travel Point and Shoot Cameras

  • Some point and shoot cameras have comparable image quality to smartphones.
  • There are no interchangeable lenses.
  • They don’t have as many manual options as DSLRs or mirrorless cameras.

  • The image stabilization tends to be great.
  • Time lapse settings for recording your road trip.
  • They’re small and won’t take up a lot of room in your car.

Cons of an Action Camera for Road Trips

  • To get the most out of your action camera you’ll need to purchase additional accessories and mounts.

Road Trip Dash Cams For Your Car

If you don’t want to miss a minute of your road trip, even if you’re driving, or want to make an epic road trip time lapse video of every step you took from your first turn to your destination, a dash cam (dashboard camera) might be a good investment.

Dash cams are traditionally used as a safety measure, to record your every move in case of an accident. But they can also be used to record your every road trip. Most car dash cams are designed to record the road in front of you, but you can also find cameras that record inside of your car, if you want to capture your karaoke (car-aoke) performances.

If you’re looking to create fun travel videos, travel vlogs, or rod trip timelapses it might make more sense to get a GoPro and mount it to your dashboard to ask as a road trip dash cam, but if you’re planning on recording your entire trip, it might be worth it to have equipment dedicated to the task.

A dashcam is a camera that mounts to your car’s dashboard and continuously records the view from your front window (or, in some cases, into the car) while you’re driving. They are often used by cautious drivers who want to record details of their journey and make sure they have proof in case of a car accident, but can also be used to record your entire road trip.

Pros of a Dashcam

  • Designed for the specific purpose of recording from your dashboard.
  • Have better battery life that a GoPro or smart phone and are designed to keep recording for longer periods of time.

Cons of a Dashcam

  • Most dashboard cameras have a singular use and can’t be used outside of the car.
  • With their wide-angle lenses they sometimes pick up part of the window and car hood.
  • Might be illegal in some jurisdictions.

GoPro Suction Cup Mount

GoPro Suction Cup Mount (GoPro Official Mount), Black

While this isn’t a camera, it is a camera accessory. Most out of the box dash cams are made with safety, not vlogging, in mind. So the best option if you’re looking to record timelapse road trip videos or car karakoke performances is to buy a GoPro and a GoPro Suction Cup Mount to attach the camera to your dashboard. You’ll get great video and invest in a flexible camera that has multiple uses.

Features: works on cars, boats, motorcycles and more; industrial strength suction cup’ broad range of motion and stability; quick release

Just for Fun Road Trip Cameras

There are tons of cameras to bring on a road trip that really would just be fun to use. There are instant cameras, old film cameras, disposable cameras, Lomography cameras, and more. You probably wouldn’t want to bring these fun additions as your main camera, but for Polaroid souvenirs or to reconnect to that lost thrill of not knowing what you have until the film is developed, these modern marvels and blasts from the past can add a little extra excitement to your road trip photography.

Pros of Fun Travel Cameras

  • These cameras make a fun addition to any road trip.

Cons of Fun Travel Cameras

  • It’s one more thing to pack and keep track of.
  • You’ll probably want a traditional digital camera as well.
  • Film, film processing, and accessories can add extra costs.

How to Record a Road Trip: A Simple Guide

  • Date: December 31, 2021
  • Time to read: 6 min.

Documenting a vacation has a lot of benefits, keeping those memories alive will reduce stress for months to come. You may record a trip to share the videos on social media or with your family.

To record a vlog style video while on a road trip, set up a tripod on the dash of your car. Action Cameras are often waterproof and can also be mounted on the outside of your car. If you want to have continuous video of the road while you are driving, consider a dash cam.

There are a lot of reasons to record your trip, some people want to record their drive for safety reasons, dash cams are designed to record for hours whenever your car is in motion.

Record Your Road Trip

How do you vlog a road trip?

Depending on your equipment there are many ways to vlog while you are on a road trip.

Vlogging on a road trip is easy with a GoPro or other action camera, your normal vlogging camera, a dash cam, or even with your phone. The key is to select the correct mounts and sound recording equipment. Whatever setup you use, be sure to practice in a safe place before you take it on the road. Sound is a very important thing to consider while in the car.

Try getting a windshield mount for your normal vlog setup, camera, phone or GoPro and then move on to sound.

Get an external mic, the easiest option is a wireless lav mic.

Many travel vloggers rely on GoPros to get the amazing action and drone shots that make the channels so stunning.

Camera Mount

Dash cams are designed to be installed in a car to record continuously while you drive.

Professional drivers use these to protect themselves legally in the event of a crash. My husband is a truck driver and these are common in that profession.

Dash cams are capable of producing beautiful, high quality footage that would be suitable for travel vlogging.

I found this really great comparison video of a few dash cams and their performance on a road trip.

Dash cams can be had at every price point from $30 to well over $300.

This is the camera you want if you want to set it and forget it. They are mounted to the windshield and the cords can be tucked in around the windshield and it is a slick, permanent installation.

There are added benefits to using a dash cam to record, they have cloud backup, parking mode, collision alerts and they add lots of security to your vehicle.

The cloud connected models can alert you if someone breaks into or hits your car while you are away. Super helpful in a new area.

They are legal to operate while you drive, and they will not be distracting while you get down the road.

When you think about recording while driving, you probably thought about the GoPro, or another action camera like this one on Amazon .

These cameras have endless accessories for you to mount the camera anywhere.

Start with a windshield mount and play around with different positions and modes with the GoPro, I also though this setup with a magnet and sticky pad, to be a really versatile mount setup.

Be sure to use the ultrasmooth mode for recording while driving.

If you are going for some very smooth footage, invest in a gimbal mount. You can attach these mounts to other harnesses or mounts to get smooth interesting footage from lots of angles.

Be careful and practice in a safe area.

This couple shows you their exact setup with a GoPro Hero 8, all the settings and what they use to get high quality sound while recording in the car.

Phone Mounts

I do not drive and record, but I do record lots of videos while sitting in my car.

I record with my phone 90% of the time, and I love this mount on Amazon , it is inexpensive and versatile. It can be used in many situations and it fits my phone pretty well, but I do have to remove my phone case for the phone to fit.

I have also used this mount that suctions to the dash and holds the phone while the phone is in motion.

I do not record myself with my phone while I am driving , I think it could be done safely with a GoPro or a camera with an app that could connect to and control the camera easily. Dashcams are another great way to get footaa

Many states have laws against using your phone while driving, so I am not sure it is worth the risk.

Documenting Road Trip Memories

If you are looking for more creative ways to document your trip and you are not looking for video footage, we have found some other great ways to commemorate a great adventure.

Family Journal

My favorite way to document all our family adventures is with a family journal.

We use a simple Family Book that is just a simple spiral bound notebook.

This is available to anyone who wants to add to the book. I encourage my family to add any memories, things they notice or how they are feeling about day to day life or trips in the book.

I hope that it will become a record of our family history.

We only have 3 writers in our family so this idea will hopefully grow with my family. I dream of my teenage kids sharing their memories and emotions in the family notebook. I’ll check back and let you know how that goes!

Family Collection

If writing is not your thing, start a family collection.

We love to collect little items on our trips, my husband is really into coffee mugs. We have a great one from Cirque that is actually his favorite mug.

If you choose to collect something natural like rocks or flowers, be sure to follow all local laws about removing natural items. Many places do not allow tourists to take rocks, so don’t break the law.

Christmas Album

I am sure you are already taking photos on your family vacation, print those out and give everyone an album at Christmas.

There are a lot of reasons I like this method.

We know that shared memories help build strong families. So Christmas morning can be a great time to remember all the wonderful things you have done as a family.

Spend some time together reflecting on what the year was like, laughing and smiling.

You can go to Walmart.com or walgreens.com and build a photo book right on the site, or you can go low tech and buy a photo album from Dollar Tree and put about 24 photos in the book.

I made these for my kids to look at when I was leaving them with my mom for a few days, just a little reminder of everything we love as a family.

If you want more interesting ideas for documenting family trips, I have 11 more ideas in this post.

Is it legal to record while driving?

There are no specific laws about filming while driving at the time of writing, but there are 24 states that have laws against hand held phone use. So, if you choose to record yourself while driving, do not use your phone.

In my opinion the safest way to record yourself while driving is to mount a camera in a secure way, and press record before you start driving.

I like to record while I am parked. Then I get the road trip vibes without being distracted while driving.

If you are looking to get footage of your travels, invest in a dash cam and record while you drive, I was surprised at the quality of these cameras. They are a great addition to a vlogging setup for a road trip.

If you choose to go with a dash cam be sure to install it in compliance with local laws. Some states, like Alabama, require that it be mounted to the dash not the windshield.

Best road trip games to play with your partner and family

30 Best Road Trip Games That Are Super Fun

Road trip games can make any journey more enjoyable and fun whether you're going on a long drive across the country or spending a few hours in the car with the kids.

Our list of the 30 of the best road trip games will provide entertainment for children and adults alike, ranging from music-related games and foodie challenges to word contests and devious pranks.

You will never have to think of what to do on a long car ride again! The following is the ultimate list of games you can play on a road trip.

1. The Story Game

The Story Game can take up a good chunk of a road trip if everyone's memory holds up!

Entertaining for adults and kids alike, this is storytelling with a twist - you go round the car and each passenger adds just one word following on from the player before.

See how crazy you can make the story, and get someone to record it on their phone so you can listen back to the hilarious progression of the plot as you make way along your road trip. You could go from sunbathing in Spain to training alpacas in Chile in a matter of seconds.

Trust us, you're in for a laugh with this one and if your passengers are good, these stories can get seriously long!

2. I'm Going On A Road Trip

The I'm Going On A Road Trip game will definitely test your memory!

This road trip game requires a bit more brain power than some of the others, but is still really entertaining and great for all ages. To play, passengers take it in turns to state 'I'm going on a road trip and I'm bringing…' followed by an item of their choice.

The next person has to repeat the phrase, saying the last person's item and adding one of their own and so on - eventually you'll have a really long list of crazy items to try and remember, and it's always amusing watching people try and get it right a few rounds in.

Be sure to throw in a few weird and wonderful items to confuse the rest of the players!

3. The Quiet Game

The Quiet Game can be a great way to earn 5 minutes of silence on a road trip.

This game is a bit of a joke for the adults who want a few minutes of peace and quiet from their squabbling kids. The rules are hilariously simple - just say 'who can stay quiet the longest?' and breathe as the competitive siblings fall instantly silent.

Just a word of warning though: don't expect it to last very long, so have another kid-friendly car game lined up for when they get bored.

4. The Banana Game

A bright yellow classic Beetle is one of the cars you can find in the Banana road trip game.

This game is all about the color yellow and is super simple - points are awarded whenever a passenger spots a yellow vehicle.

Come up with a scoring system for different types of vehicle (e.g. one point for a car, two for a van, and three for a lorry) and whether you saw it parked (one point) or in motion (two points). Add any extra rules you fancy, and prepare to get competitive about who saw it first.

5. Never Miss A Beat

Never Miss A Beat is more of a group singalong than a game.

This game may be more of a singalong than a game, but it's still awesome!

Never miss a beat offers another chance to show off your singing skills and unusually gets everyone playing together rather than against each other.

All you need to do is stick on your family's favorite song or a song everyone knows the words to and start singing. Someone then needs to turn it down for 10 seconds whilst everyone keeps singing, before turning it back up again to see if you've kept the beat and stayed in time.

This game is mainly just a bit of fun, but you could always turn it into a competition by splitting into teams!

I Spy is an all time great road trip game and requires no preparation or props.

Another classic you've probably played a thousand times before but never get bored of.

Passengers take it in turns to find an object either inside or outside the car and say "I spy with my little eye something beginning with…" the first letter of whatever the object is.

The other passengers must then try and guess the answer (clues can be given if it's really hard), with the winner taking the next turn. This is an easy car game to play with kids and always a great one to keep bored passengers entertained for a surprisingly long time.

7. 20 Questions

The 20 Questions road trip game only allows Yes/No questions.

This classic road trip game probably doesn't need much of an introduction - simply choose one passenger to start by thinking of a random object, and the other passengers take turns asking 20 yes-or-no questions to guess the object.

Whoever finds the answer first gets to think of the random thing in the next round, but if the object has everyone stumped, they get to keep their role for the next round.

There are no rules on the object you can pick, but lying in your answers is strictly forbidden!

8. Car Bingo

Spotting wildlife can be a fun game on the road - like this elk in the Yellowstone National Park.

This kid-friendly game takes a little prep before you set off, but it's well worth it if you need to keep the kids entertained on a long journey.

Make a list of things the children might see along the road trip route - e.g. cows, a tractor, a red car etc, to give to them when you get into the car.

As you drive they can cross things off as they see them, not only distracting them from boredom but also encouraging them to look around and learn about the places they're visiting.

Make the list as specific to the place you're going as you want. In Texas you might have anything mentioning the Lone Star and in Wyoming you might be on the lookout for elk!

You can tailor the difficulty and number of things to find depending on the age of your children.

9. Sweet Or Sour

The Sweet Or Sour road trip game is all about waving at other people.

The rules of this road trip game are super simple: passengers take turns waving at passing pedestrians or people in nearby cars. If they wave back they're sweet, if not they're sour. You win a point for every sweet passerby you get, so aim to find as many friendly people as possible along the way.

For obvious reasons, the driver should opt out of this one, but it can be extra fun if they divert the car through a busy area of town to rack up some extra waving opportunities!

Remember not to distract other drivers!

10. Secret Place Race

Kids looking at a map to find secret places along the road trip route.

Make use of that old road map that sits in the car seat pocket to entertain the kids. All you need to do for the secret place race is pick a place they're unlikely to know such as a tiny village, river, or mountain, and see how long it takes them to find it on the map.

This can be incredibly entertaining in a Where's Waldo kind of way, except their mission in finding the village can be made critically important for the driver to be able to find the right way!

Have a reward on hand if they're able to find it in less than 5 minutes, and watch as they're completely engrossed in the task. A simple yet satisfyingly effective game.

11. Punch Buggy

Spotting a VW Beetle or another car of your choice is a great reason to playfully punch each other on a road trip.

First gaining popularity as part of one of Volkswagen's marketing campaigns in the 1960s, the aim of this game is to give your fellow passengers a playful punch whenever you see a VW Beetle drive past.

This is one of those road trip games that is universally loved by children (as long as you monitor the punching to avoid disaster), although we don't see why the adults wouldn't enjoy it too.

Granted - in some parts of the world, seeing a Beetle is incredibly rare, so if you're struggling to see many Beetles, you could always choose a specific color of car or another funny model as the target instead to make it a touch easier.

12. Regional Car Pantry

Buying a selection of different foods and snacks along the length of your road trip can become a game itself.

One for the foodies. Stretching across the full duration of your road trip, collect as many local snacks as you can at every stop along the way to build up your car pantry.

Make sure you take pictures of each snack (or buy duplicates if they'll keep) so you can see what you've managed to collect at the end of the trip, and be sure to take some weird and wonderful treats home for friends and family to try.

Do some research beforehand and make a list of all the foods you want to find, or just wing it and see what local delicacies you stumble across as you go.

13. The License Plate Game

A selection of US license plates that would be perfect for the License Plate game.

You'll need pens and paper for this game so make sure you've packed some before you head off. The aim is to spot license plates from as many different countries or US states (depending on where your road trip is taking place) as possible.

Write a list of the places you've seen and compare it with the other passengers at the end of the drive. This is the ideal game for those long stretches of boring motorway where you'll probably rack up a surprisingly long list, and the person with the most countries gets to ride shotgun for the next leg of the journey.

The end of this road trip game can get very controversial - if you spot a real game winner, photographic evidence is a good idea so get your phone out and take photos in secret!

14. The Fortunately - Unfortunately road trip game

The Fortunately Unfortunately road trip game can be played absolutely anywhere based on what you see along the way.

This is similar to the Story Game (see #1 above), however players get a little more control and creativity. You can say more than one word this time!

One player starts off with a 'fortunately' sentence, and the next has to follow with an 'unfortunately' sentence to build a story of luck and misfortune. For example, one player might start with 'fortunately, the sun was shining' with the second player adding 'unfortunately they had a long drive ahead of them' and so on.

This game can make it a little easier to remember the long string as everything has to be either fortunate or unfortunate! Get as creative as you can and you'll find yourself at your destination in what seems like no time at all.

15. The Complete Food Menu Game

The Complete Food Menu game involves ticking off restaurant types as you pass them on your road trip.

This is the perfect road trip game to play if you're passing through a few towns on your way although roadside restaurants and chains will do just fine.

Print out a sheet with all the food types you can think of in a grid against the names of people in the car.

Every time you drive past a restaurant of some kind, the first person to spot it gets to collect the tick for the food type it serves. Steaks and pizzas should be easy to collect by everyone, but you might just win if you're the only one who spotted the seafood restaurant in the middle of Oklahoma!

16. The Name Game

The more random names you know, the better you will do in the Name game on your road trip.

This is another simple game that keeps your brain occupied during a long drive without being too strenuous. One person simply says any name they can think of and the next person must say another name that begins with the last letter of the name before, and so on.

For example if passenger one says Tom, passenger two might say Mary. If you've made any friends during your road trip, try and include their names to make it a tad more topical.

Obviously adding the rule of not repeating the same names once they have been mentioned makes this a whole lot more interesting as the game progresses although you're guaranteed to have a disagreement over whether a name has or has not been mentioned already!

17. Guess The Song

Guess The Song is not only reserved for road trips, but an awesome way to have fun on the way.

If you're comfortable in your musical knowledge you'll definitely want to suggest playing this one. The rules are simple: get the front passenger to play the first few seconds of a song and whoever can guess the artist and song title the quickest wins a point.

This is much easier if you can connect your phone to the car for the road trip and play songs from there so you can easily search and pause the music.

The person with the most points after half an hour gets control of the music for the rest of the journey, so there's a lot at stake...

18. Sing The Next Line

Two women enjoying playing Sing The Next Line game in their car.

A variation on the Guess The Song game above, except this game relies on your vocal chords.

Instead of just guessing the song after a few seconds, players have to rack their brains and try and sing the next line, and the person who successfully remembers it first wins a point. Think of a reward for whoever wins, and if you attempt it but get it wrong you have to do a forfeit chosen by the driver.

19. Radio Roulette

Be prepared to listen to some seriously wacky tunes in the Radio Roulette game.

This game's a little less hands-on but no less entertaining. Use your road trip driving time to discover all the local radio stations of the place you're visiting by re-tuning every ten minutes and choosing a new station at random.

You'll probably find some pretty wacky programs and get to know traditional and popular music in that country - a great way to appreciate culture even when you're between destinations.

If you a radio station that is really wacky, let us know!

20. Would You Rather

Would You Rather is a game that can be as innocent or outrageous as you are comfortable with.

This road trip game can be be as PG or as outrageous as you like depending on the age of the passengers.

Take turns asking the car whether they would rather do one thing or another (e.g. 'would you rather go to France or Spain?') and see what they answer. Make it as difficult as possible to choose between the two options for maximum entertainment value, whether that's making them equally amazing or equally horrible, it's up to you…

You can see how this game can get as interesting in group of adults as with kids - answering the question is compulsory and providing reasons is where it gets fun!

21. Car Rules Road Trip Game

The Car Rules road trip game will keep you thinking in case you go over a bridge or pass a yellow car on the way.

Everyone in the car gets to make up a silly rule, e.g. whenever we cross a bridge everyone has has to touch their nose, or whenever we stop at a red light everyone has to touch the roof of the car.

The last person to join in when an action is enforced gains a point, and the person with the most points at the end of the drive loses. Get as creative as you like with the rules and try and catch people out where possible so you can take the victory.

The loser has to go pay for parking or buy ice creams at the next stop!

22. Hot Seat

The Hot Seat game can get you to know your close friends even better and have a laugh.

If you're that nosy friend that wants to find out all of your companions' deepest secrets then you'll like this one. Passengers take it in turns to be in the hot seat and are asked 5 questions, one of which they're allowed to veto and the other four must be answered honestly.

This is best played in an adult-only car (questions get notoriously cheeky) and is the ideal way to pass the time finding out some interesting new facts about your road trip friends.

You can use it as a warm up or a step up from the car version of Truth or Dare (see #27 below) depending on how close your friendships are!

23. People Watching

People watching is fun - some cars will really make you scratch your heads as you pass them on your road trip.

Someone picks a car full of people that everyone can see (this works best if you're stuck in traffic), and together you make up a story about the people - who they are, where they're going, what they do for a living. The funnier and more far-fetched the story, the better - just make sure you're not staring too obviously at your subjects or it might get a little awkward...

Use your imagination to make the stories controversial and see how far you can go with making things up!

You might just surprise yourself how the most innocuous of road trip games will make you spot things you would never otherwise see just by looking at the cars around you.

24. Kiss, Marry, Avoid

The Kiss, Marry, Avoid road trip game will let you debate the qualities of famous people or mutual friends.

Another one for the older crowd. Take turns listing three famous people and the other passengers in the car have to choose which person they would kiss, which they would marry, and which they would avoid.

Make it really hard to decide so that everyone has a bit of a laugh, and try to predict each other's answers to add an extra twist to the game.

If you want to add a little spice to the game, use people you all know or move to people in the car!

25. While You Were Sleeping

While You Were Sleeping is a road trip game where your imagination can run wild!

There's nothing more tempting than pulling a prank on a passenger who falls asleep en route, and whilst we don't dispute the whole drawing-a-mustache classic, we've got something even craftier.

Whilst they're taking a nap on the road trip, have a brainstorm with the awake members of the party and come up with an epic story or scenario of something that they missed during their nap.

The aim of the game is to get them to believe the story, so make sure nobody laughs or breaks character (come up with a forfeit if they do), and keep the lie going for as long as possible. If you manage to pull it off this is far better than a DIY mustache... but by all means, draw one on for good measure.

This classic road trip game can really take a turn for the worse if you want it to. A simple horror story about a truck that followed the car for miles that you just managed to pull away from before getting a flat tyre can go a long way as you're parked on the side of the road. Peer into the rear view mirror in horror and watch their face when a random truck appears on the horizon!

26. Categories

Beatles songs is one possible option for the Categories road trip game.

Popular with kids and adults alike the world over, Categories can be an awesome game to play on road trips as well.

The premise is simple - somebody picks a category which can have multiple different answers. Fruit or Beatles' songs can both be great options.

Players have to then take turns to name one item from the category at a time. Players are eliminated when they can't name one until there's one winner. Either the winner or the next person in turn gets to choose the next category.

That brings our list of the best road trip games to an end. Do you have other games you enjoy? Get in touch to let us know and we'll add it to our list!

27. Truth Or Dare (The Car Edition)

Playing Truth Or Dare on a long road trip can really help pass the time and get people laughing.

The old classic can and should be played on road trips! Players take turns to either answer an embarassing question truthfully or perform a dare set by other players.

The dares obviously have to be contained to the realms of the car or the roadside so you'll have to get creative.

Needless to say, this game is very different when played with kids as a family or with adult friends and is equally great in both cases!

28. 6 Degrees of Separation

How is a gaucho from Patagonia connected to Prince Charles? That's what the 6 Degrees of Separation game is all about.

This is a road trip game that will require some imagination and provide plenty of topics for conversation.

Take turns and pick two people who you may know or make them up (e.g. a Shaolin monk). The more different the background and location of these people the better!

Then proceed to discuss how these two people are connected through 6 connections or less. You don't have to know the whole chain - that's actually where the fun is.

How is a gaucho from a remote farm in southern Argentina connected to Prince Charles? The gaucho must know his ranch's boss (1). The boss knows the boss of the company that buys beef from local producers (2). That company has a liaison manager in a UK-based Argentinian beef importing firm (3). This manager has a colleague who imports fine wines from around the world for the same company (4). The colleague personally provides the fine wines to the Royal sommelier (5) and the sommelier personally knows Prince Charles (6). Bingo!

29. The Stop Joker Card road trip game

The Stop Joker Card game allows every person the road trip to pick a stop wherever they want.

If you're going on a long trip and you're going to be driving all day or even longer than that, this is a great way to give everyone in the car, kids included, a way to have a bit of control.

At any point during the trip, each person can enact their Stop Joker Card - this means the car has to stop wherever they are passing and spend some time there doing an activity or just relaxing.

Your kids might see something really fun halfway along and use their card to break up the journey and everyone gets to have their stop along the route!

30. Pick One Car road trip game

You have to be quick if you spot a dream car on your road trip to win the One Car game.

This one is a game of patience and opportunity. Every person in the car has one chance during the journey to pick a car that you can see on your way as their ultimate One Car. The objective is to pick the coolest/fastest/most amazing car possible.

Once you've chosen a car, you can't change it - you only have one go so you better make it count - if you're passing something that is decent but not stellar, you might have to make a tough choice.

The game is made even more difficult by the fact that the first person to call the car out gets to have it so you have to be alert and on the lookout if you haven't got one yet.

The 9 best road trips in PC games

One Off The List

Kick the tires, whistle at the paint job, spin the keys on your finger like a revolver and then shoot the car with the little laser of unlocking. It’s time to get back on the road. What’s that? Entire country in a state of unprecedented lockdown? I see. Well, lucky for you, we concern ourselves here only with pretend cars, the indoor joy of fictional journeys on virtual roads. Here, my housebound friends, are the 9 best road trips in PC games. Seatbelts on, please.

car trip video

Jalopy is a driving game that truly understands the absurd ambition of road trippery. You have been gifted an old banger, the Laika 601, by your generous (if bedraggled) uncle Lutfi. It is a cramped wheely bin of a vehicle, based on the Trabant 601 of 1960s East Germany. You will need to change tires, mix fuel, swap batteries, and wrestle with various innards to keep your rusty little friend from dying by the side of the motorway like an unlucky rabbit. But upgrades, salvage and smuggling will see you across many a European border, chugging and clunking along as your uncle natters incessantly about forgotten history. This is what road trips are all about. A bad car, questionable company, and frequent breakdowns of both the mechanical and emotional variety. Strap in, you’re taking this unruly metal baby all the way to Istanbul.

Final Fantasy XV

car trip video

Square Enix’s premier boy band world tour has you driving a waxed-up automobile accompanied by four lads with hedgehog hair and an insatiable appetite for boring side quests. The game eventually throws its “Final Fantasy but a road trip” premise out the window like the smoldering arse end of a ciggy. But, while it lasts, the atmosphere of being in a shiny convertible with some close buds is a pleasing one. They stop to make camp and eat noodles. They reminisce about childhood misadventures. They visit a Venetian city, and watch as it is destroyed by a gargantuan snake god. All the usual bants of a good cross-country journey.

American Truck Simulator

car trip video

A driving sim so detailed you can roll the windows down . Not only that, but the sound effects of traffic and truck will change when you do, from muffled to whooshing, from rumble to growl. American Truck Simulator is the beloved take-a-moment game of RPS. Despite being a game in which the only real goal is to travel from A to B, it has kept Alec sane , bedazzled Alex Wiltshire , and made Alice O feel far too dry , such is the power of its atmospheric charm. From an outsider’s perspective, this sim is the weirdly mundane realm of hobbyists and people who inexplicably like their exhaust pipes to be the size of small trees. But climb inside the cab, friend. Between A and B, you might find what you’re looking for.

Euro Truck Simulator 2

car trip video

As above, but with pessimism.

car trip video

You don’t need a car for a road trip. Or even a road. This barely distinguishable path beaten into the dirt will do. Don’t be so narrow-minded, mate. As long as there is one place, and another, farther-away place, there can be a road trip. Pack your frying pan, pick up a lantern, stuff some herbal tea into your pockets, and let’s head off. I’m not just being colourful here. In co-op jaunt ‘em up Outward, you and your friend will need the pan for boiling water, the lantern for seeing things in the deep black of night, and the tea for getting over the inevitable cold you catch from being out in the rain too long. It is an ambling RPG about going on a journey, and usually being under-prepared. Oh, there are also wolves, troglodytes and giant purple-eyed mantis creatures. Watch out for those.

The Oregon Trail

car trip video

I’ve never played this and, let’s be honest, neither have you. Let’s just pretend I made a joke about pooing yourself to death, and you laughed. A comfortable, safe, and hollow laugh. The laugh of a joke both foreseen and postheard. The empty, glassy-eyed laugh of a person who knew this game would be on this list before they even finished reading the headline. Who are we fooling. Who are any of us fooling. The Oregon Trail is not a game. It is a ritual. It is a spirit, often invoked, never seen. Let us forget these putrid few seconds, which we have excreted into the void, time wasted and expelled from the body, forever. Like dysentery.

car trip video

As a racing game, The Crew was a bit crap. The cars were less fast and furious, more wonk and spurious. But as a cross-country dossabout, it was enjoyable. The open world is a USA in miniature, from the red rock pillars of monument valley, to the deserts of Nevada, to the snowcaps of the Rocky mountains. Basically, if you want to saunter from one US coast to another, taking in the scenic beauty of the land, but you lack the moral fibre to commit to the slow ins and outs of Truck Simulator... well, you’ve got The Crew. This is the accessible road trip for time-starved car likers. You can get across the whole nation in less than two hours. Trust us, we’ve done it .

Half-Life 2: Episode 2

car trip video

Graham made me put this one in, because he likes crossing the Valveverse in Gordon and Alyx’s Mad-maxmobile, skirting the legs of tripods and gunning down infestations of antlions. What merry scrapes that man is into. Has he, like many others, attempted to traverse the entirety of the game with a garden gnome in the passenger seat? I do not know, and frankly, I am afraid to ask.

Fallout: New Vegas

car trip video

A road trip can lack a car, it can even lack a road, but if you haven’t been shot at from the mouth of a giant dinosaur statue, it does not qualify.

One Off The List from… the best distress calls

Last week we heard some muffled screams over the radio, and discovered the 7 best distress calls in videogames. And none of you explicitly called for any of them to be removed from the list. You are all fired.

Which means it's up to me to examine the subtext of your comments and remove one of the games based on a close reading of your cybernetically distributed emotions. It’s… Subnautica .

car trip video

"Subnautica, for fuck’s sake," cries list deliberator "Godwhacker", as they point out the fatal flaw in all environmental storytelling. "If you’re in that much distress surely you shouldn’t be typing things into your iPad? At least open up Trello and create a board with ESCAPE THE FIRE in the ‘To Do’ column, and then move it to ‘In Progress’."

Yes, why do so many dead-meat game characters spend their dying moments writing "they're coming through the walls" instead of getting on with the barricade? It's a mystery. Anyway. See you next week.

How Collector Got Hands On Real Life Video Game Car, The McLaren Solus GT

Some lucky gearheads were treated to a day they would never forget in Philadelphia, as they were introduced to their new McLaren Solus GT track beast.

Key Takeaways

  • McLaren's Solus GT is a dream come true for car enthusiasts seeking a track weapon of their own design.
  • The McLaren Solus GT, based on a Gran Turismo video game design, boasts an 800 hp V10 engine and 2,645 lbs of downforce.
  • The Triple F Collection's McLaren experience included custom printed shirts, Gulf livery, and a private jet excursion.

It's arguably every automotive enthusiast's dream to be able to order a track weapon that has been built to their very specification. British brand McLaren is one of the marques ready to jump to your service, should your bank balance have enough zeros in it, of course.

The guys from The Triple F Collection found themselves in this scenario seemingly plucked straight out of the imagination of keen drivers the world over. They ordered a McLaren Solus GT, a machine based on a design for the video game series, Gran Turismo , to be the ultimate track toy. With it shipped to the U.S., the guys headed to McLaren's Philadelphia dealership to see their new baby in the flesh for the first time.

Why McLaren Doesn't Think Electric Supercars Need 2,000 HP

Private jet picks up triple f triplets for a special day trip.

Jordan, one of the three members of the Triple F Collection alongside brother Jason and father Dave, excitedly revealed the trio was headed to Philadelphia to see their new performance car for the first time. The exciting McLaren Solus GT , which was optioned to their tastes, had been built in England before being brought to the U.S.

It was unpacked from its shipping container in New Jersey, before then making the trip to McLaren's dealer in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, The Triple F boys enjoyed a run on a private jet to reach Philly, before being taken to where their new pride and joy was being kept.

Keen to remember the occasion for the rest of their lives, they had taken a couple of measures to ensure this would come to pass. Firstly, they had special shirts printed that featured the Solus superimposed onto a Gran Turismo -style game case. The slogan 'virtual to reality' was also printed on them, hinting at the Solus' origins as a video game hero.

They had also requested that the machine be painted in the infamous bright orange and blue Gulf paint scheme. This livery was made famous primarily for its use in sports car racing during the 20th century, with appearances at the fabled 24 Hours of Le Mans being common.

McLaren Brought Video Game Track Car To Reality

Neil, McLaren's Global Head of Commercial, was on hand to unveil the car to its expectant parents. The Triple F guys were left speechless as the vehicle had its cover lifted off, with the Gulf paint scheme stealing the room. Its aggressive aero setup hinted at its intentions, with two huge diffusers and corresponding venturi tunnels allowing it to produce a huge amount of downforce.

Neil explained that the car had been designed back in 2017 for the Gran Turismo Sport video game, as part of its Vision GT project . This consists of the game's creators approaching world-class brands such as McLaren, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and even Bugatti to design cars that would be brought to life within the title. Their use within a virtual world meant the manufacturers were released from the shackles they normally found themselves held back by in real life.

Some Of The Coolest Vision Gran Turismo Creations

Source ( Vision Gran Turismo )

This saw some breathtaking creations thought up by the brands' ultra-brainy designers, with the Solus GT being the product of McLaren's hard work. With several of its customers keen to own the car for real, the marque decided to put the machine into production.

It retains the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine from the game , which is joined by the amazing aerodynamic setup. Neil shared that the Solus creates as much downforce as an LMP2 prototype race car, which races at Le Mans and in the IMSA SportsCar Championship.

Solus GT Designed To Be As Close To The Game As Possible

Neil added that McLaren aimed to keep the car's specification as close to its virtual counterpart as possible. As they tried to design a machine that could work in real life from the outset, this didn't prove to be particularly difficult. He says the brand's engineering department only had to make small tweaks to make the Solus suitable for the real world.

Here’s What Really Happened To El Chapo’s McLaren F1

The main change was an alteration to the car's suspension setup so that it would work on real roads. McLaren also put the Solus through an intensive two-year test program to perfect it, taking it to many European race circuits as it looked to create the ultimate track weapon. Neil explained that the car was designed to be the very best track car it could be, without the restrictions that road and race cars have to meet.

This means the 5.2-liter V10 could be tuned to its maximum potential, and not just to the level a particular race series requires. At the same time, it doesn't have the same level of refinements needed to make a car suitable for the road, allowing the McLaren guys to keep the Solus' weight to a minimum. The setup can also be made more aggressive, as it doesn't have to worry about dealing with lesser-quality normal roads.

Alongside the Solus GT itself, McLaren also provided the guys with their own bespoke racing gear, so they could feel comfortable and protected when driving at speed. These included specially designed HANS devices , gloves, and boots.

A full tool kit was also included, which provided every tool needed to work on the car at the circuit should it be involved in a crash or suffer any mechanical dramas. They were also presented with an intercom system, so the driver can communicate with whoever is dissing their driving over the radio.

Mighty V10 Powertrain Deafens Everyone Within A 100 Feet Radius

Having looked around their new beauty, the Triple F guys were desperate to hear the V10 being fired up for the first time. McLaren first had to head the engine coolant up to 55 degrees, which would allow the engine to work correctly from the moment it was started. Mike, who was the technical team manager for the Solus project, first took the time to talk Jordan through its amazing steering wheel.

What Makes The McLaren Solus GT The Ultimate Trackday Hero

  • 5.2-liter V10 motor that produces 800 hp, the vehicle weighs just 2,204 lbs
  • State-of-the-art aerodynamic package with large diffusers and wings that produces 2,645 lbs of downforce at 150 mph
  • Features a replica of the wheel from the 2017 F1 car
  • Underwent two years of extreme testing to perfect the machine

Why Gran Turismo Has Been Such An Integral Part Of Larry Chen's Life

It was a replica from McLaren's MCL32, the machine it campaigned in the 2017 Formula One world championship. It featured the same switches as its racing counterpart, which controlled aspects of the car such as the traction control setting and road setting. These consisted of settings for either track or race, the latter giving a more aggressive throttle map, or intermediate and wet conditions.

Without further ado, it was time to bring the Solus GT's mighty V10 motor to life. Unsurprisingly, it wasn't exactly difficult to work out when it had burst into song. It was so loud that the microphones recording it couldn't cope, so they ended up giving it a different pitch than it produced in reality. Neil remarked that the engine put out around 130 decibels at full chat, which is the same as standing next to a jackhammer according to the Hearing Health Foundation.

Having recovered from their temporary deafness, the guys said their goodbyes and headed off to be reunited with their new weapon at a later date. They revealed that it would be present at their upcoming Event IV in Miami in June, allowing fans to come and experience the machine firsthand. They promised to have it running and driving on site, so if any gearheads fancy blasting their eardrums to the moon, the Solus has it covered.

For The Win
